USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

  • View history

The USS Enterprise ( NCC-1701-B ), sometimes referred to as the Enterprise -B , was a Federation Excelsior -class explorer in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries . She was launched in the year 2293 under the command of Captain John Harriman . She was later commanded by William George , Demora Sulu and Thomas Johnson Jr. .

Over the course of the Enterprise -B's service, she was remembered as a key figure in exploring beyond the Gourami sector , mapping over 142 star systems and making first contact with 17 different civilizations. The Enterprise served as flagship of the Federation. The Enterprise -B was also the first Federation starship Enterprise in 30 years that did not have Captain James T. Kirk in command of the vessel. History [ ]

Construction [ ].

The Enterprise was built at the Antares Ship Yards ; the decision to model the ship after the failed experiment USS Excelsior was highly controversial. However, Starfleet decided to use it for both economic and technical reasons, as Excelsior classes had shown that they could withstand the test of time; indeed, they would still be in service nearly a century after first being developed. ( ST reference : Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , TNG video game : Future's Past : Library Computer)

Maiden voyage [ ]

USS Enterprise-B caught in nexus

The Enterprise -B trapped in the Nexus .

By 2293, construction work on the Enterprise had been completed, with only a few components needing to be installed such as a tractor beam and the loading of photon torpedoes . Despite this, the Enterprise -B was launched from a drydock orbiting Earth on a maiden voyage with three honored guests aboard in the form of Captains James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott and Commander Pavel Chekov , as well as a large number of journalists .

Although the maiden voyage was just meant to be a short trip out to Pluto and back again, the Enterprise received a distress call from two Federation transport ships who were bringing El-Aurian refugees back to Earth. Although not fully equipped, there were no other vessels in range, and Captain Harriman reluctantly gave the order to intercept them. Upon arrival, the Enterprise discovered that the transports had become trapped in an energy ribbon called the Nexus , and the starship herself became ensnared in when moving into transporter range. Unfortunately, the Enterprise was too late to help the crew of one transport, the SS Robert Fox , as it exploded and was only able to rescue 47 people out of 150 aboard the SS Lakul , before it too was destroyed.

Captain Scott devised a way to free the ship using a resonance burst from the deflector dish to simulate an antimatter explosion, after a plan to use torpedoes was discarded, as there weren't any on board. Captain Kirk went to deflector control in order to make the necessary modifications as the Enterprise 's secondary hull was struck by an energy tendril. The Enterprise escaped with minor casualties and a major hull breach along sections 20 through 28 on decks 13 through 15. Kirk was believed killed in the breach, and the mission became notorious due to his loss. ( TNG movie , novelization & comic adaptation : Generations )

An inquiry that followed cleared Harriman of any blame, although several former members of Kirk's crew held him to account. ( TOS novel : The Captain's Daughter )

Enterprise-B plaque

Captain Harriman shows Spock the James T. Kirk memorial dedication plaque.

At some point by approximately 2294 , Harriman would have a dedication plaque for Kirk installed in the area of the ship where he was at the time believed to be killed. ( ST comic : " Spock: Reflections, Issue 1 ")

After obtaining a B'rel -class Klingon bird-of-prey , the Montgomery Scott of the future traveled back in time from 2370 to 2293 to transport Kirk off the Enterprise -B at the moment where he was believed lost, but the action caused an alternate timeline to form, erasing the Federation from history. The timeline was restored when Kirk was returned to the Nexus. ( Star Trek novel : Engines of Destiny )

Service history [ ]

Enterprise-B Antares

In 2294, the Enterprise -B destroys a renegade Klingon battlecruiser in the Antares system.

In early 2294, during its first mission following the loss of Captain Kirk six months previously, the Enterprise -B was sent to deal with an outbreak of Terrellian plague in the Antares system, with Doctor Leonard McCoy onboard as chief medical advisor. En route, the starship confronted a renegade Klingon warship, the K't'inga -class IKS Vengeance , whose captain intentionally released the plague to lure the Federation into violating Article 6 of the recent Khitomer Accords . Harriman defeated the enemy ship by transporter-swapping the Enterprise' s entire complement of photon torpedoes for the Klingon crew . The battlecruiser was then destroyed, and the enemy crew captured. ( Captain's Log comic : " Captain's Log: Harriman ")

After the losses of its maiden voyage, the Enterprise was commanded by Captain William George for a deep-space tour beyond the Gourami sector that mapped 142 star systems, and made 17 first contacts. In the late 2290s decade , Captain Harriman again assumed command of the Enterprise . ( ST reference : USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

At some point during or after 2293, an Enterprise -B landing party under the command of Ensign Demora Sulu marched into an ambush by the Brevant race on Beta Orvis III , with Sulu nearly paying for her mistake with her life. ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

In 2303 , Captain John Harriman and Lieutenant Commander Demora Sulu departed the Enterprise -B at Starbase 23 under the guise of personal leave, but secretly were headed toward the Romulan Star Empire on a covert mission for Starfleet Intelligence . The mission was to monitor for indications of advanced cloaking technology within Romulan space. Command of the starship was turned over to Captain Demián Rendón while Harriman and Sulu were gone. For eight weeks, the two became displaced some 173 hours into the future due to a temporal encounter with a star designated " Odyssey ". After this displacement, Harriman and Sulu returned to Starbase 23, via the Foxtrot III monitoring station, and re-took command of the Enterprise . ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

In 2307 , the Enterprise underwent a rather extensive refit at Starbase 11 , in an effort to bring it up to standards in respect to the new Romulan Ivarix -class vessels. Several significant crew-transfers took place: among them the arrival of Boslic officer Xintal Linojj . At some point during this same year, both the Enterprise and Excelsior crews shared an overlapping shore leave at Starbase 11. Not long afterward, the Enterprise' s refit was completed, and the starship returned to active status. ( TLE novels : Serpents Among the Ruins , One Constant Star )

Enterprise-B Qadyaq

In 2310, the Enterprise -B orbits the Klingon planet Qadyaq while on a relief mission

Three years later, in 2310 , as part of relief efforts stipulated in the Khitomer Accords , the Enterprise -B delivered supplies to four thousand indigents on the planet Qadyaq , in coordination with Commander Kang aboard the IKS K'tanco . However, upon arrival, Captain Harriman's crew discovered the planetary population held in thrall of a corrupt Klingon governor , who refused to accept the relief supplies. The next day, both the Starfleet and Klingon vessels were shocked to discover the entire planet massacred by the governor — their throats slit — simply because they proved a risk to his crooked schemes. Filled with disgust, Harriman's ship departed Klingon space. ( Alien Spotlight comic : " Four Thousand Throats... ")

Captain Harriman remained in command of Enterprise until 2311 , when the ship played a key role during the Tomed Incident . Following the incident, Harriman stepped down, and command was given to his first officer, Demora Sulu . ( TLE novel : Serpents Among the Ruins )

In 2311, on her very first mission as captain of the Enterprise -B, Demora Sulu ran into unspecified trouble during a voyage to the Röntgen Wall . ( ST - The Lost Era novels : Serpents Among the Ruins , One Constant Star )

At some point not long after the Tomed Incident, the Enterprise -B crew under Sulu's command spent two years studying the Debrune ruins in the Barradas system. This mission presumably lasted until no later than 2315. ( ST reference : USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

Sulu's first command of Enterprise lasted until 2315 , when she took a leave of absence to care for her terminally-ill paternal grandmother. During this leave, the Enterprise set off on a year-long exploration mission, which became wildly successful, and earned the new captain a promotion to Admiral . Sulu returned to the ship, and remained in command for several years thereafter. ( TLE short story : " Iron and Sacrifice ")

On a mission to a moon in Desidera's Loop aboard the Enterprise -B prior to 2319 , Demora Sulu narrowly escaped death by both drowning and hypothermia. ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

In 2318 , the Enterprise -B under Captain Demora Sulu's command, participated in a first contact mission on Beta Velara IV , but without the participation of freshly-certified contact specialist Hawkins Young . ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

Starting in either late 2318 or early 2319, the Enterprise was assigned to explore an unclaimed, unaligned region of space near the Tzenkethi Coalition , and was ordered to avoid all contact when possible with Tzenkethi ships. With no return-date specified, the starship conducted exploratory missions in the region, equipped with a dozen Class H shuttlecraft , two Gagarin -class warp shuttles and a half-dozen cargo-management units. Two months into the voyage, a massive construct was discovered in the Jalidor Lambda star system , whose exploration ultimately cost the Enterprise , among other things, the loss of a shuttlecraft, the Eriksson . ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

Ten months passed by when the Enterprise discovered the planet Rejarris II located within this region, and, planetside, an interdimensional portal whose previous activation in 2308 resulted in the loss of the USS Excelsior . Attempting to rescue a stranded crewman on a planet located in a parallel universe on the other side of the portal, Captain Demora Sulu herself became trapped, along with two of Enterprise' s shuttlecraft (the Amundsen and Pytheas ). In an attempt to mount a rescue mission, involving the Enterprise and the USS Cassiopeia , Admiral Harriman used the Cassiopeia to destroy the Rejarris portal before an overwhelming Tzenkethi attack forces could claim it and cross over and board the Enterprise . Both Demora and Hikaru Sulu, as well as over five hundred stranded Excelsior crew, were rescued. The Enterprise -B ultimately returned to its home universe (albeit some three weeks prior to the original discovery of the portal) after eleven months of transition-time using the "Odyssey" star. ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star )

The ship's last commander was Captain Thomas Johnson Jr. , who took command in the early 2320s . The ship's assignment under Johnson was patrol of the Cardassian border. The ship was therefore able to render assistance to Bajoran refugees in 2328 , when Cardassia annexed Bajor . The following year , the ship was lost in deep space shortly after the crew contracted some unknown infection. ( ST reference : USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

Star Trek’s USS Enterprise – every version of the starship explained

From Kirk's adventures to horizons new with Seven of Nine, the USS Enterprise has a long story. The best Star Trek starship, we've compiled its timeline below.

Star Trek's USS Enterprise explained - A and D, and Shatner as Kirk

James Osborne

Published: Aug 20, 2023

The history and timeline of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise, explained. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise… you know the rest.

Since it began in 1966, Star Trek has been tracking the adventures of the USS Enterprise right the way through the Star Trek timeline . Some spin-off Star Trek series , like DS9, Voyager, Discovery, and Lower Decks, have directed their focus elsewhere on other ships (or stations), but the USS Enterprise is still synonymous with the franchise.

The USS Enterprise is undoubtedly the best Star Trek starship to ever grace our screens. And the beauty of it is whether you’re still in love with Kirk’s original ship, or if you have a soft spot for Picard’s Enterprise-D, the USS Enterprise’s long history has something for everyone. We’re now on to the Enterprise-G , introduced in the recent Star Trek Picard season 3, and it can be hard to keep track of the evolution of Starfleet’s flagship. No longer! Here’s the complete timeline of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise , showing its aesthetic evolution, important dates, and captains.

Star Trek's Enterprise NX01

Enterprise (NX-01)

  • Active between: 2151-2161
  • Captains: Jonathan Archer
  • Class: NX-class

The first starship Enterprise, and the only version not to bear the prefix ‘USS’. The beautiful NX-01 established United Earth as an inter-planetary power to be taken seriously, exploring the Alpha and Beta quadrants, and paving the way for the creation of the Federation.

Led by Captain Jonathan Archer and manned by a small and specialized crew, the Enterprise was vital in beginning diplomatic relations with the Tellarites, Andorians, Klingons, and more. The ship’s missions also included the search for the Xindi, who posed a great threat to Earth. After the ship was finally recalled, its crew members were hailed as legendary heroes.

Star Trek's Enterprise original

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

  • Active between: 2245-2285
  • Captains: Robert April, Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk, Will Decker, Spock
  • Class: Constitution class; Constitution-II class (refit)

The pioneering adventures of the USS Enterprise began under the command of Captain Robert April with its launch in 2245. After April accepted a promotion to the rank of Admiral, he transferred command to Christopher Pike who led the ship on exploratory and diplomatic missions across the galaxy.

After over a decade in the captain’s chair, Pike stepped aside. James T. Kirk transferred from the USS Farragut in order to take command of the flagship alongside his first officer Spock . They led the crew on a five-year mission of exploration, during which Kirk made first contact with a record number of alien species.

Star Trek's Enterprise in Search for Spock

Following on from the success of his period as a captain, Kirk was promoted and chose Will Decker as his successor. Along with Scotty , who remained the ship’s chief engineer, Decker oversaw a huge refit of the USS Enterprise, which was completed as the V’Ger incident began.

After V’ger, Spock assumed command of the USS Enterprise as its captain, and the ship became a training vessel for cadets. Kirk stepped into the chair once again during the battle with Khan, and took the USS Enterprise back to drydock after Spock’s death. As the ship was being repaired, Kirk stole the USS Enterprise with the help of his crew in order to resurrect Spock, but during this mission the USS Enterprise was destroyed in a confrontation with the Klingon Kruge.

Star Trek's Enterprise A

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

  • Active between: 2286-2293
  • Captains: James T. Kirk
  • Class: Constitution-II class

Following on from the destruction of the Enterprise and the demotion of Admiral Kirk, a new Enterprise was constructed for the now-captain to command. The Enterprise-A had a short service history, with only seven years worth of missions.

These included the journey to Sha Ka Ree and, most importantly, its final mission to negotiate peace with Klingon Chancellor Gorkon. After internal sabotage, the USS Enterprise-A became embroiled in a plot to wreck the peace process, though played a vital role in the eventual signing of the Khitomer Accords prior to being decommissioned.

Star Trek's Enterprise B

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

  • Active between: 2293-unconfirmed
  • Captains: John Harriman
  • Class: Excelsior class

Only a year after the Enterprise-A was decommissioned, the Enterprise-B was launched before technical work had been completed, with Captain John Harriman leading the new ship. Its early launch was primarily for the sake of publicity, however the ship was quickly drawn into an energy distortion field called the Nexus while responding to an emergency distress call.

This led to massive damage on the ship, and the presumed death of James T. Kirk who was aboard the Enterprise-B for its launch. The history of Harriman’s command, and of the ship following on from the Nexus incident, is largely unknown.

Star Trek's Enterprise C

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C)

  • Active between: unconfirmed-2344
  • Captains: Rachel Garrett
  • Class: Ambassador class

The USS Enterprise-C is one of the most significant ships in Starfleet history. Not only is it the first version of the Enterprise to be permanently captained by a woman, Rachel Garrett (one of the best Star Trek captains ), it’s also the ship which prevented the outbreak of a new Federation-Klingon war through brave self-sacrifice.

While responding to a distress call from the Klingon outpost Narendra III (which was under attack by Romulans), the Enterprise-C was sucked into a temporal rift which brought it into the future. However, in this future, the Klingons and the Federation were locked in a desperate and bloody battle which had claimed 40 billion lives.

To prevent the war and correct the timeline, the Enterprise-C was sent back through the temporal rift. It sacrificed itself at Narendra III defending the outpost against Romulan aggressors, which the Klingons saw as a pivotal act of bravery. The ship was completely destroyed, however, along with its crew.

Star Trek's Enterprise D

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)

  • Active between: 2363-2371; 2401
  • Captains: Jean-Luc Picard, Edward Jellico
  • Class: Galaxy class

20 years after the sacrifice of the Enterprise-C, the Galaxy class Enterprise-D was launched as Starfleet’s flagship. The ship was under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the vast majority of its service history (barring a brief period of command by Captain Jellico during Picard’s mission to Celtris III), during which time first contact was made with numerous powerful alien species including the Q Continuum, the Borg, and the Cytherians.

Decades after its destruction, the Enterprise-D was rebuilt by Geordi La Forge at Starfleet museum, and in 2401 the reconstructed ship was vital in the final battle with the Borg.

Star Trek's Enterprise E

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)

  • Active between: 2372-unconfirmed
  • Captains: Jean-Luc Picard, Worf son of Mogh
  • Class: Sovereign class

Captain Jean-Luc Picard was assigned command of the USS Enterprise-E, a state-of-the-art Sovereign class ship, after the destruction of the D. The Enterprise-E led many significant missions, with the time-travel to Earth’s past to prevent interference from the Borg being (arguably) the most pivotal.

In Star Trek Picard season 3, it’s confirmed that Worf was promoted to the rank of captain and took command of the USS Enterprise-E at some point after Picard became an Admiral in 2381. However, Worf was also blamed for the ship’s destruction, indicating that the USS Enterprise-E’s service history came to an end under his command at an unspecified date.

Star Trek's Enterprise F

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-F)

  • Active between: Unconfirmed-2401
  • Captains: Elizabeth Shelby
  • Class: Odyssey class

The service history of the USS Enterprise-F, an Odyssey class ship, remains the most ambiguous to date. The ship is only seen just before it is decommissioned in Picard season 3 under the command of Fleet Admiral Shelby prior to the Borg attack Sol Station. This attack led to the death of Shelby, and the F was decommissioned as planned in 2401.

Star Trek's Enterprise G

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-G)

  • Active between: 2402-unconfirmed
  • Captains: Seven of Nine
  • Class: Neo-Constitution class

In 2402, the USS Titan-A was rechristened as the Enterprise-G and command was handed to the newly promoted Seven of Nine. Previously, while still the Titan, the ship had been commanded by Captain Liam Shaw .

What’s next for the USS Enterprise?

The adventures of the USS Enterprise look set to continue into the 25th century, with Captain Seven of Nine at the helm and Commander Raffi by her side. Should we ever get a Star Trek Legacy release date , we’ll see what these adventures look like, and the continuing voyages of the USS Enterprise.

The history and legacy of the USS Enterprise looks set to continue as long as there are new letters in the alphabet.

History and Service [ ]

The Enterprise -B, under the command of Captain John Harriman , was launched from a drydock orbiting Earth in 2293 . For her maiden voyage, a short trip between Earth and Pluto , were a group of journalists and three special guests, Captains James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott and Commander Pavel Chekov , who had all served aboard the previous USS Enterprise .

As the Enterprise got underway, they received a distress call from two transports who were bringing El-Aurian refugees to Earth. Despite the Enterprise lacking several vital elements such as photon torpedoes or medical staff, Harriman ordered the ship to proceed at maximum warp . On arrival, they found the two transports trapped inside the Nexus and, in attempting to rescue the refugees, became trapped herself. After rescuing as many survivors as they were able before both transports exploded, Kirk proceeded to alter the ship's deflector dish to produce a resonance burst and allowed the Enterprise to escape. Unfortunately, the ship was hit by a tendril of energy from the Nexus, and the section of the hull that Kirk was in was exposed to space . ( Star Trek Generations )

Amongst the El-Aurians rescued by the Enterprise were Doctor Tolian Soran , Guinan , and the parents of Jesse Erixon and Keran Azhan . ( Star Trek Generations ; Star Trek: Pendragon ; Star Trek: Intrepid )

In 2299 , the Enterprise -B drove off a Klingon attack against the Kamura V colony . ( Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era )

In 2302 , the Enterprise -B was instrumental in stopping a subspace species from conquering the Federation. ( Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era )

Five years later , the Enterprise underwent an extensive refit, which brought her up to the standards of the new Ivarix -class Romulan warbirds . ( Star Trek: The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins )

The Enterprise -B was heavily involved in the Tomed Incident of 2311 , after which Captain Harriman relinquished his command and left starship duty. Former first officer Demora Sulu was promoted to captain and assumed command of the Enterprise . ( TLE novel: Serpents Among the Ruins )

In the 2320s , the Enterprise was under the command of Captain Thomas Johnson, Jr. and stationed along the Federation-Cardassian border . In 2328 , the Enterprise and her crew assisted Bajoran refugees when the Cardassian Union annexed Bajor . ( ST reference : USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

The Enterprise -B left active service sometime prior to 2332 , when the Ambassador -class USS Enterprise -C was launched. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , TLE novel: The Art of the Impossible , Well of Souls )

Final fate [ ]

  • In 2307 , the Enterprise -B was lost with all hands under classified circumstances. ( Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era )
  • In 2329 , the Enterprise -B was lost in deep space with all hands after the crew contracted a mysterious illness ( USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )
  • Circa 2353 (or reference stardate 2/9208.12), the Enterprise -B engaged in battle with two warships of the Imperial Klingon States in the Triangle . Though the Enterprise destroyed the Klingon vessels, she suffered catastrophic damage in the battle and was destroyed. ( FASA RPG : Star Trek: The Next Generation Officers' Manual )

Fanon continuities [ ]

Orion press [ ].

James T. Kirk 's apparent death during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise -B was a public relations nightmare for Starfleet.

Several Starfleet admirals resigned, including then- Commander-in-Chief William Smillie , the Chief of Starfleet Operations and the Chief of Starfleet Public Relations .

Pavel Chekov was named the Enterprise -B's commanding officer; Nyota Uhura was exec; and Christine Chapel chief medical officer. ( Chekov's Enterprise )

At the end of 2295 , Chekov was promoted to fleet captain and became commanding officer of the Sixth Fleet . Thus, the Enterprise -B became the flagship of the Sixth, which was tasked with the exploration of the Beta Quadrant on a seven-year mission. (" New Orders ")

Team Chipmunk: The Next Generation vs. Star Trek: Omega Force [ ]

The Enterprise -B was lost with all hands in 2329 , with their last transmission to Starfleet noting that members of their crew had contracted a dangerous infection. ( USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

Members of the crew of the USS Yagami discovered the Enterprise -B while searching for an anomalous energy signature in the dimension belonging to the United Galactic Federation in 2380 . ( Team Chipmunk: The Next Generation vs. Star Trek: Omega Force : "Three Stars in the Night")

Following a battle with the evil Decepticon robots in which their original vessel, the SS Ponyo , was destroyed, Stargazer Seville and her friends and allies were given ownership of the Enterprise -B under the terms of the Nagano-Miyake Compact . ( Team Chipmunk: The Next Generation vs. Star Trek: Omega Force : " Beyond the Edge of Forever ")

Data, son of Soong [ ]

In an alternate timeline where Data was raised by the Klingon Empire and Klingon Defence Force , the Enterprise -B had been lost after the crew fell victim to a plague. The Chalnoth salvaged the ship along with Avenger (NX-09) and used them for piracy .

The Yattho , a Xindi-Insectioid offshoot who had gained precognitive powers, predicted the Chalnoth would attack them. They invited the Klingons to test the new IKS Vor'cha in their space as a result. During the battle, the Vor'cha 's temporary captain , Kurn , hoped to return the ship to the Federation , but it was destroyed when the IKS Pagh damaged the engines, and several Yattho ships pounced on it. Attack Wing Wave 26 Preview -- U.S.S. Enterprise-B

enterprise b star trek

This September, WizKids/NECA will release Star Trek: Attack Wing Wave 26 , and StarTrek.com has the exclusive First Look at the ships in the upcoming expansion packs, concluding with the U.S.S. Enterprise-B.

The U.S.S. Enterprise-B is a Federation Excelsior-class ship. On its maiden voyage, the Enterprise-B, under the command of Captain John Harriman, rescued 47 El-Aurian refugees from a Federation transport ship that was caught in an energy distortion. Honored quest, James T. Kirk was believed to be killed during the rescue when the ship’s hull was breached.

enterprise b star trek

This version of U.S.S. Enterprise designated NCC-1701-B is a worthy successor and deserves the name Enterprise. With a Primary Weapon Value of 3, 1 Agility, 5 Hull, and 4 Shields this ship is similar to the original U.S.S. Enterprise and subsequent U.S.S. Enterprise-A (Refit), but with some obvious improvements. The special ability for the U.S.S. Enterprise-B allows you to replace one of its Battle Stations, Scan or blue Target Lock tokens that is beside your ship with an Evade Token. The generic version of this ship loses one Shield and one Crew Upgrade Slot compared to the named version.

The Captain in the U.S.S. Enterprise-B Expansion Pack is John Harriman. A level 2 Captain, John Harriman may be inexperienced but is a brave Captain nonetheless. His ability allows your ship to perform an Evade Action as a free Action. If you do this, you then place an Auxiliary Power Token beside your ship. Despite his rough start as a new Captain, John Harriman is a great addition to any evasive fleet that is looking to try and avoid danger at all costs.

No ship named Enterprise would be complete without a Sulu at the Helm. The U.S.S. Enterprise-B boasts Demora Sulu, the daughter of Hikaru Sulu, as Helmswoman.

If your ship is hit, after the Deal Damage phase, you may discard this card to immediately execute a maneuver from your Maneuver Dial with a speed of 3 or less. Following in her father’s footsteps, Demora Sulu will make sure she keeps the ship out of the path of danger.

enterprise b star trek

Other upgrades to the U.S.S. Enterprise-B include Improved Phasers which is a 4 dice attack at Range 2-3. This attack is treated as a Primary Weapon and places 2 Time Tokens on the card when you perform the attack. In terms of defense, Deflector Control allows you to Repair 1 Shield Token on your ship or flip up 3 of your disabled Shield Tokens over to their Active sides. You cannot use this Action if your ship is Cloaked.

Resonance Burst is a Tech Upgrade that allows you to target a ship within your forward firing arc and Range 1 of your ship. The target ship must then discard 1 Token (Evade, Battle Stations, Scan or Target Lock) that is beside it, of its choice. If there is a Cloak Token beside the target ship, flip it over to its red side.

enterprise b star trek

Holo-Communicator allows you to target a friendly ship within Range 1-2. If you do so, you may perform the Action listed on that ship’s Captain Card.

One of the great advantages Federation ships have is the ability to move backwards. Full Reverse makes this ability even better. During the Activation Phase, if you reveal a [Reverse] Maneuver, you may disable this card to add 1 to the speed of that maneuver. No other ship has ever been able to make a 3 reverse maneuver, making the U.S.S. Enterprise-B a one of a kind ship.

The U.S.S. Enterprise-B Expansion Pack is fresh out of dry dock and ready for you to take the helm. Try your luck with the special scenario “Maiden Voyage” and attempt to aid two Federation transport ships before they are destroyed by the energy distortion ribbon. Do you have what it takes to be the Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B?

History [ ]

As a child in grade school , Harriman read about the legendary missions of the crew of the original Federation starship Enterprise , a fact which he related to James T. Kirk , Montgomery Scott , and Pavel Chekov during the Enterprise -B's christening ceremony in 2293 , where the three were guests of honor.

Captain Harriman in command of the Enterprise -B during its shakedown cruise

During the Enterprise -B's shakedown cruise , the crew received a distress call from the transport vessel Lakul , which was carrying El-Aurian refugees to Earth . Initially, Harriman was slow to respond and reluctant to attempt a rescue, aware that the Enterprise did not yet have a full crew complement and that several key systems were not installed; however, he was forced to respond as they were the only ship in range. The crew discovered the Lakul and another vessel trapped in a severe gravimetric distortion which was threatening to destroy the ships.

As the crew of the Enterprise could not move into transporter range without becoming trapped in the distortion itself, Harriman suggested a number of courses of action. These suggestions included generating a subspace field around the ships and venting drive plasma from the warp nacelles in an attempt to break them free. Use of a tractor beam was impossible because the system had not yet been installed.

These efforts met with failure, and given it was obvious Kirk was barely restraining himself from intervening, Harriman swallowed his pride during this crisis to ask for the veteran's advice. At that consent, Kirk suggested moving the ship into transporter range that they were able to rescue the surviving passengers. Harriman was initially skeptical of this plan, observing that the gravimetric distortions had the potential to destroy the ship, a claim to which Kirk simply responded, " risk is part of the game, if you want to sit in that chair ."

Harriman, Scott and Chekov at hull breach, USS Enterprise-B

Harriman, Scott and Chekov survey the damage at the site of Kirk's apparent death.

Although the effort was successful and the El-Aurians were beamed aboard, the Enterprise did indeed become caught in a gravimetric field . With no photon torpedoes aboard to generate an antimatter discharge, Scott suggested that a resonance burst from the main deflector might simulate the effect and disrupt the field's hold on the ship long enough to break away. As performing this procedure required a modification to the ship's deflector relays , Harriman granted command to Kirk as he prepared to leave the bridge and perform the modifications. After only seconds in the captain's chair, Kirk maintained that Harriman's place was on the bridge of his ship, so he volunteered to perform the modifications himself. It was during his efforts to modify the relays that an immense energy surge struck the ship, causing a hull breach on Deck 15, where Kirk was working. After the ship broke free of the field due to Kirk's actions, Harriman, Scott, and Chekov traveled to Deck 15 where they discovered that the room in which Kirk was working had been completely destroyed, seemingly resulting in Kirk's death. Background information [ ].

Harriman was played by actor Alan Ruck .

The script for Star Trek Generations describes Harriman as, " young, confident, eager – this is his first command and he takes it very seriously. " [1]

Alan Ruck describes his casting as Harriman thusly:

This is crazy. So my manager at the time calls up – and this is in the days of faxes – and says, "I'm faxing you over some pages for a Star Trek movie." I say, "Okay, great." And the pages come over, and I read them, and in my mind I'm going to be playing an alien with a head shaped like a stalk of broccoli or something. So I go, " Who do they want me to play?" "Harriman!" Look, when I shave every day, I don't look in the mirror and say, "Hey! There's a starship commander." [Laughs.] It's just not how I picture myself. So I was, like, "Really?" "Yeah, that's what they want." And then I talked to Rick Berman , who was in charge of the whole Star Trek thing at the time, and he said, "Yeah, we figured that Harriman came from a wealthy, politically connected family, and they sort of bought you this job as a stepping stone into a political career." That was the backstory, which you never heard. All you knew was that there was this young, inexperienced guy who was given the Enterprise -B, which was ill-equipped. And it wasn't his fault. It was because half of the systems hadn’t been installed. But they decided to take it out for this PR stunt, a publicity run with three heroes, and nothing works, and of course he doesn't know what to do, so Kirk has to take over, after which Kirk gets sucked out into the Nexus, into a time warp, and it leads to his ultimate demise. So from that point on, half the people in the Star Trek world love me for killing Kirk, and half the people hate me for killing Kirk. And I can live with that. [2] [3]

In early drafts of Star Trek Generations and various merchandise released before the movie, the commanding officer of the Enterprise -B was called "Harry Johnson."

In the Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive Technical Manual , the computer refers to him as "James Harriman."

Apocrypha [ ]

Captain Harriman and the Enterprise -B are featured in the 1995 novel The Captain's Daughter , in "Shakedown", a short story in the 2000 anthology Star Trek: Enterprise Logs (both of which were written by Peter David ), and in the Star Trek: The Lost Era novels Serpents Among the Ruins and One Constant Star , both by David R. George III . He makes an appearance early in the first issue of the Star Trek: Spock: Reflections comic, showing Spock the place, now adorned with a dedication plaque , where Kirk was pulled into the Nexus – Harriman was distraught that he'd lost James T. Kirk on his first command, but Spock, reminding him of the 47 El-Aurians saved by the Enterprise , insisting that he had nothing to be ashamed of. Harriman featured prominently in the 2010 comic book issue Captain's Log: Harriman , detailing his struggle to overcome his guilt and his doubts in the aftermath of the shakedown cruise and Kirk's "death".

The Captain's Daughter also introduces Harriman's father: Admiral John Harriman, Senior ( β ) ( nicknamed "Blackjack").

Serpents Among the Ruins gives his full name as John Jason Harriman II and that he was born aboard the USS Sea of Tranquility ( β ) and lived most of his childhood on a series of starships. Until his entrance into Starfleet Academy , he had never spent more than a few weeks planet side. This was an uncomfortable experience for Harriman as he found the sky in particular to induce agoraphobic reactions. But after a few months, he recovered and excelled in his studies. He studied the Romulan Star Empire in depth, an interest he had maintained after hearing stories of his grandfather's participation in the Earth-Romulan War as told by his father. He graduated in three years on an accelerated program. The novel also indicates that Harriman, working with Starfleet Intelligence , was the main architect of what became the Tomed Incident ; the effort was intended to defuse tensions with the Romulan Star Empire by forcing them to stand down when the Klingons sided with the Federation after the Romulans destroyed a series of Federation border outposts. The outposts were revealed to be completely empty, with false sensor readings indicating life signs. After the signing of the Treaty of Algeron , Harriman steps down as captain of the Enterprise -B and turns it over to his first officer, Demora Sulu .

In One Constant Star , eight years later, Harriman is assigned as "admiral-at-large" of Helaspont Station, commanded by his wife, Captain Amina Sasine; they team up with Demora and the Enterprise -B to rescue Demora's father, Captain Hikaru Sulu , and the survivors of the destroyed USS Excelsior . The novel reveals that Harriman had a sister named Lynn who was murdered in 2275 .

The short story "Full Circle" in the anthology book Strange New Worlds VII shows Harriman at the rank of admiral and serving as Starfleet Command's liaison to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers in 2371 – the year Kirk emerged from the Nexus and was killed on Veridian III . He turns the job over to Montgomery Scott , remarking that a real engineer could make something of the job – setting the stage for the Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers series. The Star Trek: Typhon Pact novel Raise the Dawn mentions that Harriman is still alive in the 2380s .

Harriman's mirror universe counterpart appears in the Star Trek: Mirror Universe novel The Sorrows of Empire , where he's a lieutenant assigned to the ISS Hornet in the 2270s and later attempted to transfer to the ISS Enterprise in 2275 .

The personnel file created by Michael Okuda for the video game Star Trek: Starship Creator includes several connections to Ruck's role as Cameron Fry in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off , including a wife named Sloane and a son named Ferris who both live in Chicago , as well as an interest in 20th century Italian sports automobiles .

Truth OR Myth?- USS Enterprise B – Early Design History

Hello and welcome to another episode of Truth OR Myth Beta Canon, a Star Trek web series that dives into the history of any given topic using Beta Canon sources and my imagination to fill in the gaps.  In today’s episode we’re looking at the USS Enterprise B, an Excelsior Class Variant Design, first seen in Star Trek: Generations , to better understand its place in Star Trek History.

As always, because this IS Beta Canon, all information re-laid should pretty much be taken with a grain of stardust, and only considered a little bit of Star Trek Fun and so, with all that out of the way, let’s begin.

For Starfleet Command and the United Federation of Planets, the hard part was over. With a new century fast approaching, and the Excelsior Class design proving itself to be a worthy successor to the Constitution Class refit, Starfleet Command would make the decision to continue the Enterprise Line with the USS Enterprise-B.

The later part of the 23rd century had been a difficult time for both organizations.

(Paramount) Enterprise B in space dock

V’ger, Khan Noonian Singh, The Genesis Torpedo and Planet, and the Whale Probe, had all been hot button issues and emergencies during this trying time, but the Federation endured.

An explosion of technological developments had propelled Starships Designs into an entirely new era, one where the citizens of the Federation were no longer concerned for their safety, having absolute faith in the ability of Starfleet to protect them.

Then finally, in 2293, the unexpected would happen, the Klingon Empire would call for peace talks with the Federation.

The destruction of the Klingon moon Praxis would force the Empire to the negotiations table in a bid for Federation assistance with their current crisis.

The moon’s destruction had contaminated their Home World’s atmosphere and would render their planet uninhabitable in the next 50 years. With the Klingon’s enormous military budget, they simply did not have the resources to combat this current catastrophe.

In addition, after a plot to derail the peace process between these longtime foes was uncovered, the long process of creating an acceptable peace treaty for both sides had begun.

The USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, had been instrumental in that peace process. Though badly damaged during that mission, Captain Kirk and his intrepid crew had come out on top once again.

(Paramount) The Enterprise-A was the most well known Constitution Class ships ever

But this mission was to be the last for Captain Kirk as commanding Officer of the Enterprise.

With the starships senior officers approaching retirement age, Starfleet had decided to decommission the Enterprise before the turn of the century. Captain Kirk, not wanting to do anything except command the Enterprise, had decided to accept early retirement, a decision that would see his senior officers make similar choices and go their separate ways.

The name Enterprise had always been an important one for Starfleet.

Since the launch of the NX-01 Enterprise in the mid-22nd century, starships bearing this name had come to symbolize the best the Federation had to offer.

So, even before the Enterprise-A’s mission for Peace with the Klingon Empire had begun, Starfleet had decided that a New Enterprise, the Enterprise-B, would herald in the 24th Century.

The Enterprise-A herself had been an experimental upgrade to the ageing Constitution Class Refit, one that hadn’t started very well.

(Paramount) The Enterprise-A sails off into the sunset

But after the development and redevelopment of the new technologies contained within her hull, Starfleet Command would begin the process of selectively upgrading a portion of the remaining starships of the class to this new specification.

Meanwhile, the Excelsior Class, a failed experiment for a Transwarp capable starship design, had begun to make a name for itself in the latter 2280s.

Having to refit the class to a more standardized design, the USS Excelsior had shown herself to be stronger, faster, and far more reliant than the Constitution Class refit had ever been.

And so, by the time the decommissioning process on the Enterprise-A had begun, Starfleet Command had already decided that the next Enterprise would be a specialized variant of the Excelsior Class Design, with that starship’s construction almost complete.

Sitting at a length of approximately 467 meters and 28 Decks tall, the USS Enterprise-B would be designed to be operated by 750 Officers and Crew Members.

Many systems of this variant of the Excelsior Class design, would receive an upgrade, making the Enterprise B, the most powerful Starship of her time.

Though the USS Excelsior’s Transwarp experiment had been a failure, Starfleet Command had learned a lot of new information about warp velocities in general, leading Starfleet’s top warp theorists to begin to redefine the enter warp scale. But at this point in history, the Enterprise B would continue to use the traditional warp scale utilized for over 2 centuries.

(Paramount) Enterprise B's Secondary Hull

This meant that the USS Enterprise B would have a standard safe cruising speed of warp factor 7 and an emergency maximum speed of Warp factor 9.

12 Phaser Banks, with 2 emitters each and 4 Photon Torpedoes launchers, 2 forward and 2 aft, would be included in this design.

While shielding for this class would also receive an upgrade from the standard Excelsior Class design, providing 12% more Power output than its parent class.

Due to the inclusion, and eventual intended upgrades to its warp drive components, the Enterprise-B’s secondary Hull design would be slightly altered.

Rather the smooth curved hull of the standard Excelsior Class design, the Enterprise-B’s secondary hull, would have fin-like extensions added to her.

As a result, Enterprise-B’s Navigational Deflector system would also be one of the strongest ever developed by Starfleet. This additional space within the classes hull, also allowed for some reconfiguration of other components, to allow for a new experimental sensor array system to be included in the design.

Starfleet hoped that this new Sensor Array would allow the starship to detected cloaked vessels at short range, though whether this technology was successful or not, remains classified.

(Paramount) Enterprise-B Starboard View

Even Enterprise-B’s Nacelle Design would be completely upgraded and changed, utilizing a new type of warp coil within the design.

Other slight alterations would also be made to the overall design to increase performance and house newly created components.

Like most starship designs of the time, the Enterprise-B’s main Shuttlebay was located in the aft section of her secondary hull and connected directly to her vast cargo bay complex via a sliding wall at the Shuttle bay’s rear.

Transporter and Tractor Beam System also received an upgrade over both the Constitution Refit and Excelsior Class designs, increasing their range and overall effectiveness.

The Enterprise B would begin her shakedown cruise in late 2293, with a quick, run around the block type mission, to show off the New Starship Design and its crew to the Federation Public.

Many notable guests would be on board the ship for that maiden voyage, including Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Montgomery Scott, and Commander Pavel Chekov from the Original Enterprises Crew roster.

John Eaves' original concept art for the ship

Unfortunately, during a rescue attempt by the Enterprise B, of 2 starships carrying El-Aurian Refugees to Earth from an anomaly known as the Nexus, Captain James T. Kirk would be lost, presumed dead, tarnishing the vessels launch.

But by the time of her actual shakedown cruise launch in 2294, the Enterprise-B would regain and recapture the hearts and minds of the Federation’s public, and by the end of her first year of service, she would prove herself a worthy successor to the name Enterprise.

Like her parent class, The Enterprise-B Variant would continue to be constructed, refit and upgraded over the next 150 years, before Starfleet would begin to decommission the class in favour of other, newer designs.

Continuing the tradition of creating an Enterprise as the flagship for the Federation, the Enterprise-B would also make a name for herself, with her Captain and crew becoming legends. Earning the Enterprise-B her place, in Starfleet and Federation history.

Boldly continuing to go, where no one had gone before, but of course, that’s another story…

Overall, this is a really nice model, and while it may not add much to the original smaller version of the ship, the XL Enterprise -B it is a well constructed model that nicely contributes to rounding out the line of Enterprises on your display shelf.

If the  Excelsior -class Enterprise-B is a ship you’d like to add to your personal fleet, you can get the 10.5″ starship model from Eaglemoss’ US web shop for $74.95, and in the UK you can pick it up for £49.99.

There are also a pair of new concept models on the way from Eaglemoss, set to debut for the first time at San Diego Comic Con this week: a pair of never-build shuttlecraft prototypes!

The first is one of Matt Jefferies’ early designs for the Original Series (NCC-1701/5), a rounded craft which would have been impressive on-screen, but difficult to build for production in the 1960s.

The second, a sleek design created for the cancelled  Star Trek: Phase II series in the 1970s (NCC-1701/9), with fixed flight wings. If you’re at SDCC, they’ll be on display along with all of Eaglemoss’ other offerings at Booth #4337.

The New Star Trek Movie Will Finally Explore a Missing Part of Enterprise Lore

The upcoming Star Trek movie Section 31 adds a surprising new character: Captain Rachel Garrett of the USS Enterprise-C.

The Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Enterprise-C has returned! Again!

According to a Variety report about the future of the Star Trek franchise, the upcoming Section 31 movie will feature Kacey Rohl as a “young” Rachel Garrett, presumably before she became the captain of the Enterprise-C. It’s a surprising but exciting turn of events, to be sure, since Garrett has only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek , leaving much of her history yet to be explored. In fact, digging into more of Garrett’s story would be a way to unlock a piece of Star Trek captain lore that’s long been missing despite the Enterprise-C’s introduction over 30 years ago.

Fans first met an older Garrett (Tricia O’Neil) and the Enterprise-C in the season three Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” When that episode aired in February 1990, the arrival of the Enterprise-C addressed a question that had lingered since the show’s premiere three years earlier. Obviously, The Original Series took place on the USS Enterprise, which was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and replaced by the Enterprise-A at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

The TNG premiere “ Encounter at Farpoint ,” which is set almost a century after The Original Series , introduced the Enterprise-D. But what about the Enterprise-B and -C? The answer for the former came in Generations , which begins with the Enterprise-B’s troubled maiden voyage, and would go on to live in non-canonical stories outside of movies and television.

Ad – content continues below

But “Yesterday’s Enterprise” tells a much richer onscreen story about the Enterprise-C. Destroyed 20 years before the episode’s setting, the Enterprise-C goes through a time distillation and arrives in a changed future. In the original timeline, the -C was destroyed while attempting to rescue a Klingon outpost. When the time shift prevents the -C from completing its mission in the past, the future changes and the Federation is suddenly in the midst of a protracted war against the Klingons. In this reality, the Enterprise-D is a battleship, led by an embittered Picard and his military-focused crew, including Denise Crosby’s Tasha Yar.

Directed by David Carson and based on a story by Trent Christopher Ganino & Eric A. Stillwell, “Yesterday’s Enterprise” serves as a proper send-off for Tasha Yar, an original crew member who died an ignoble death at the “hands” of a blob monster in the season one episode “Skin of Evil.” Yar, and the crew of the Enterprise-C, choose to send the time-displaced ship back into the past and complete its deadly mission, sacrificing themselves to prevent the Federation/Klingon war from ever happening.

It’s a glorious episode, one of the best in the series, and a fitting end for Yar. However, Garrett puts in a great showing as a model Starfleet Captain too, embodying the courage and selflessness that marks the best captains. Even though she suffers a surprisingly gnarly death before her ship can go back to the past and complete its mission, Garrett remains a compelling figure from Star Trek lore.

Garrett later got a nod in Star Trek: Picard , which revealed her statue stood on M’talas Prime. But that’s all we currently know about Garrett, unless you count the non-canonical Lost Era novels The Art of the Impossible and Well of Souls , which flesh out her character. In canon, though, Garrett remains a compelling mystery.

As she demonstrated on the series Hannibal , Rohl knows a thing or two about portraying under-explored fan-favorites. On that Bryan Fuller -created adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novels, Rohl played Abigail Hobbes, the daughter of Garret Jacob Hobbs aka the Minnesota Shrike, a serial killer only mentioned in passing in Harris’ books.

Coincidentally, in Section 31 , Rohl’s Rachel Garrett will appear alongside another Fuller creation: Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh . As the original creator of Discovery , Fuller introduced Georgiou as Michael Burnham’s commanding officer, who dies in the Battle of the Binary Stars, only for her Mirror Universe equivalent to arrive and take her place.

The Mirror version of Yeoh’s Georgiou will be the main character of the upcoming Section 31 movie, which focuses on the secret ( and, frankly, overused ) intelligence wing of Starfleet. While she traveled to the 32nd Century with the USS Discovery at the end of that show’s third season, Georgiou’s body began to suffer from traveling across dimensions and timelines. She was forced to return to her previous time, presumably to resume work with Section 31.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Georgiou’s experience moving across timelines and dimensions might explain Garrett’s role in Section 31 . After all, Garrett did also cross timelines and dimensions in “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” and while she died before the effects of the journey could set in, that information would be of interest to Section 31.

However Section 31 plans to handle Garrett, her inclusion will finally shed some more light on the most mysterious of Enterprise eras. Where even the Enterprise-B lived on in non-canonical novels, comics, and video games, the Enterprise-C exists only to die. Perhaps, Section 31 and Rohl’s Rachel Garrett will give fans more to love about this doomed ship, and make sure that history never forgets the name Enterprise.

Big Foot (1982) (#2.5) also had a character with a last name Forrest. That show had numerous references & stars from the Star Trek franchise, the most well known of which was William Shatner from the original TV series.

The restored star trek enterprise-d bridge goes on display in may, the bridge is going on display at sci-fi world musem in santa monica, california..

Jonathan M. Gitlin - Mar 22, 2024 4:48 pm UTC

A recreation of the Star Trek The Next Generation Enterprise-D bridge

More than a decade has gone by since three Star Trek: The Next Generation fans first decided to restore the bridge from the Enterprise-D . Plans for the restored bridge morphed from opening it up to non-commercial uses like weddings or educational events into a fully fledged museum , and now that museum is almost ready to open. Backers of the project on Kickstarter have been notified that Sci-Fi World Museum will open to them in Santa Monica, California, on May 27, with general admission beginning in June.

It's not actually the original set from TNG , as that was destroyed while filming Star Trek: Generations , when the saucer section crash-lands on Veridian III. But three replicas were made, overseen by Michael Okuda and Herman Zimmerman, the show's set designers. Two of those welcomed Trekkies at Star Trek: The Experience , an attraction in Las Vegas until it closed in 2008 .

The third spent time in Hollywood, then traveled to Europe and Asia for Star Trek: World Tour  before it ended up languishing in a warehouse in Long Beach. It's this third globe-trotting Enterprise-D bridge that—like the grit that gets an oyster to create a pearl—now finds a science-fiction museum accreted around it. Well, mostly—the chairs used by Riker, Troi, Data, and some other bits were salvaged from the Las Vegas exhibit.

Unlike the actual set, which was made from wood, the replica is made of metal and fiberglass. The restoration was originally supposed to take up to two years , but the project ended up being a far bigger challenge.

When Ars checked in with the Enterprise-D bridge restoration in 2014, the science-fiction museum plan had taken shape. But that change of plans did not sit well with some of the project's original supporters, particularly after an imperfect re-creation of the captain's chair—which remained lost until recently—was sold on eBay.

Things got even uglier in 2018 when Huston Huddleston, who led the project, was arrested and then convicted for possessing child pornography. Although Huddleston still appears listed as the project's CEO on its Kickstarter page , that appears to be an artifact of its creation, and John Purdy is listed as the CEO of the Sci-Fi World Museum on its About Us page . However, Huddleston's mother remains as the museum's Chief Financial Officer.

The Enterprise-D isn't the only bridge you'll be able to find at the museum —there's also a replica of the bridge from Star Trek: The Original Series , which previously lived in a wax museum in Buena Park, California. Other exhibits include a hall of robots, as well as the "Bubbleship" and a drone from the movie Oblivion .

It's also not the only recent re-creation of the Enterprise-D's bridge. Okuda and his wife Denise both helped Paramount re-create the iconic set for the third season of Picard . The new Enterprise-D set can even be explored on Google Maps .

And earlier this month, it looked like Jean-Luc Picard's long-lost chair might be sold at auction. However, the day saw an agreement between CBS Studios and the auctioneer Propstore, which will return the chair to CBS's Star Trek Archive, which plans to restore and display it in the coming year.

“ Star Trek ” fans got a couple fascinating details in a March 27 report by Variety on the future of the franchise on Paramount+. The biggest for sure is that the character of Rachel Garrett, the first female captain of the USS Enterprise, will be appearing in the “Section 31” direct-to-Paramount+ movie that’s going to star Michelle Yeoh .

The actress Kacey Rohl will be playing Garrett, who was the captain of the Enterprise-C in the first half of the 24th century and was the subject of one of the most beloved “Next Generation” episodes ever: “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (she was played by Tricia O’Neal in the original episode).

This is the episode where, once they’ve agreed to face their doom, Picard says, “Let’s make sure history never forgets the name Enterprise.” If Kirk didn’t believe in a “no win” situation, she faced one head-on, making Garrett an especially valiant captain.

In the “Star Trek” timeline, she’s the first female Enterprise captain. In order, the timeline goes: Jonathan Archer of the pre-Federation Enterprise NX-01, James T. Kirk of the Enterprise NCC-1701 and Enterprise-A, Alan Ruck’s Benjamin Harrison of the Enterprise-B (this writer chooses to believe that since the lore does say Harrison came from “a prominent family,” that he is in fact a descendant of Connor Roy, thus winning the ultimate succession: the Enterprise captain’s chair), and then Garrett.

One other interesting detail emerged in that report: That the “Starfleet Academy” show, which IndieWire told you a year ago must logically have a 32nd Century setting as a follow-up series to “Discovery,” is in fact confirmed to be set then, but, surprisingly, is being targeted to a “tween and teen” audience.

Jonathan Frakes, who’s directed episodes of every “Trek” series since “Next Gen” in addition to playing Riker on that series and beyond, is quoted in the Variety piece as saying that he thinks the franchise’s audience is older. Franchise mastermind Alex Kurtzman seems to hope that a show like “Starfleet Academy” may reach a new audience altogether.

Reps for Paramount+ did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment about confirmation of these details.

Is 'Legacy' About to Boldly Go? Whoopi Goldberg May Be Returning To 'Star Trek'

Her 'The View' co-host Joy Behar may have spilled the beans on-air.

The Big Picture

  • Whoopi Goldberg's potential return to Star Trek as Guinan sparks excitement among fans and co-stars, but she denies any involvement.
  • Goldberg plays Guinan, a centuries-old alien known for her wisdom and signature hats.
  • Besides Star Trek , Goldberg is also rumored to reprise her role in Sister Act 3 .

Is Whoopi Goldberg returning to Star Trek ? Her The View co-host Joy Behar seems to think so, at least. As captured by Twitter user Kyle Arking , during an appearance by Zoë Saldaña and director Marco Perego on the talk show to discuss their upcoming film The Absence of Eden , the conversation turned to the latest announcement of a fourth Star Trek film starring Saldaña and her crewmates from the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot film. Saldaña was asked if she had any updates herself, prompting Behar to advise Goldberg, "don't tip your hand yet" and not to "let them know you got the job." Saldaña (who had no updates on her own Star Trek projects, but would welcome a return) was enthusiastic about the prospect of Goldberg's return to the role of Guinan, but for her part, Goldberg denied everything.

Goldberg is a longtime Star Trek fan who became enamored of Star Trek: The Original Series as a child when she saw the late Nichelle Nichols playing Lt. Uhura — a groundbreaking role for a Black woman at the time. Following the series' revival with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1989, Goldberg lobbied for a role on the show; the recurring role of Guinan, the USS Enterprise-D 's bartender who debuted in the series' second-season premiere, was written for her. Goldberg would go on to appear in 29 episodes of the series, and the films Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: Nemesis . She reprised the character in the second season of Star Trek: Picard .

Where Guinan would return is up in the air; while the character's long lifespan means she could pop up in any of the current Star Trek series, Patrick Stewart has discussed his interest in another Next Generation movie . Following the end of Picard Season 3, fans have also been clamoring for a Legacy spin-off series . Guinan could easily appear as a guest star in the potential series to give Picard's son, Jack Crusher ( Ed Speleers ) some much-needed advice.

Who Is Guinan in 'Star Trek'?

A member of the mysterious alien El-Aurian species with a fondness for enigmatic wisdom and enormous hats, Guinan is centuries-old, and first encountered Jean-Luc Picard and his Enterprise crew in 19th-century San Francisco. In the 23rd century, her homeworld was destroyed by the Borg ; she became a refugee and was rescued by the Enterprise-D 's predecessor, the Enterprise-B , as seen in Star Trek: Generations .

Having befriended Picard, she became the bartender at Ten Forward, the Enterprise 's lounge, and dispensed drinks and advice to the ship's crew and passengers. She was occasionally drawn into the Enterprise's adventures herself, confronting the omnipotent Q, warning Picard of the Borg, and once getting de-aged to childhood in a transporter accident. As of Star Trek: Picard , she has opened a bar in 25th-century Los Angeles.

How New 'Star Trek' Shows Get Made, According to Alex Kurtzman [Exclusive]

Guinan may not be the only past role Goldberg is looking to reprise. Sister Act 3 , in which she would return to the role of Deloris Wilson, is still in the works, according to Goldberg herself.

Whoopi Goldberg's potential return to Star Trek remains unconfirmed . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates. The franchise returns on Paramount+ when Star Trek: Discovery premieres its fifth and final season on April 4. You can watch Picard and many other shows from the franchise on the streamer right now.

First 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 3 Image — Spock Is Experimenting

  • Ethan Peck's Spock examines a strange lifeform in a new lab set on the USS Enterprise, in the first image from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.
  • Jonathan Frakes returns to the director's chair for Strange New Worlds , and calls one episode the "best episode" he's ever done.
  • Season 3 will feature the classic Star Trek character Scotty, who made an appearance in the Season 2 finale.

Star Trek fans may have a while longer to wait for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to air, but we have a first glimpse of the upcoming season, which is currently filming in Toronto, Ontario. The new image, courtesy of Variety , shows Spock ( Ethan Peck ) clad in a full-body environment suit, examining a strange lifeform in the new science lab set of the USS Enterprise. In the impressive new set, the translucent floor covers a four-foot pool of illuminated water, while the walls are bedecked with six viewscreens displaying live graphics.

Star Trek mainstay Jonathan Frakes , who will return to the director's chair for Strange New Worlds ' third season, also teased a bit of what we can expect. The third season will feature one episode structured like a Hollywood murder mystery that Frakes calls "the best episode of television I’ve ever done." This may be connected to a recent filming update from star Anson Mount , who noted that the upcoming season will feature something he's never done before.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 3 Resumes Filming With New Set Image

What can we expect from season 3 of 'strange new worlds'.

The third season of Strange New Worlds will continue to chronicle the 23rd-century voyages of the USS Enterprise and its crew, including Captain Christopher Pike (Mount), Spock (Peck), Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ), Nyota Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ), La'an Noonien-Singh ( Christina Chong ), Erica Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ), Christine Chapel ( Jess Bush ), and Dr. Joseph M'Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ).

Presumably, it will open with the conclusion of last season's cliffhanger finale , which saw the crew imperiled by the hostile reptilian Gorn aliens on all fronts; not only is the Enterprise under attack from a Gorn fleet, but Pike's fellow captain and love interest Marie Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ) has been implanted with Gorn embryos that will kill her when they hatch. The third season will likely also incorporate classic Trek character Montgomery "Scotty" Scott into the cast. The crew encountered him for the first time in the Season 2 finale, as played by Martin Quinn .

The water in the new science lab set may simply be for effect, or it may allude to an occasionally-referenced part of Star Trek lore that wasn't seen on-screen until the second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks : Cetacean Ops, an area of some Starfleet ships that features a large aquarium and is staffed by various intelligent whales and dolphins.

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently filming and does not yet have a release date . You can stream the previous seasons on Paramount+. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Share All sharing options for: Star Trek: Discovery is finally free to do whatever it wants

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that even among the greatest television shows in Star Trek history, most of them take two seasons to stop being kind of bad. Never has that been more true or more excruciating than in the case of Star Trek: Discovery .

enterprise b star trek

Polygon is looking ahead to the movies, shows, and books coming soon in our Spring 2024 entertainment preview package, a weeklong special issue.

Often it felt like what Discovery was really doing in its early seasons was discovering what didn’t work. Strong performances from a great cast? That works. A Klingon design that absolutely nobody liked ? Definitely not. But despite the stumbles, Discovery season 1 had still averaged C’s and B’s with reviewers, and had built an audience and a subscriber base for Paramount Plus. On the strength of Disco ’s first season, Paramount greenlit Star Treks Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy , three new shows covering a huge range of ages and nostalgic tastes. And spinning out of Disco ’s second season, which introduced familiar , nostalgic characters and a brighter, more Star Trek-y tone, Paramount produced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , inarguably the best new addition to the franchise since 1996.

Star Trek: Discovery crawled so that the rest of modern Trek could run... and then it started to walk. The show’s third season saw the USS Discovery and crew in the place that should have been their starting blocks: the bleeding future edge of Star Trek’s timeline. Thanks to season 3’s groundwork, season 4 became the first time that Discovery had a status quo worth returning to. In its fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery is finally free — free in a way that a Star Trek TV series hasn’t been in 23 years.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, season 5. Wearing a glowing uniformed spacesuit, she clings to the back of a spaceship speeding through hyperspace, colorful lights streaking the background.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is such an elder statesman of the television elite that it’s easy to forget that it was daring. The show’s triumph wasn’t just that it featured a new cast of characters, but also its audaciousness in imagining the future of the future — and making that future unmistakably different . The Original Series showed a racial and national cooperation that seemed fantastical in its time, with an alien crewmember to denote the next frontier of embracing the other . Next Generation saw that bet and raised it, installing a member of the Klingon species, the Federation’s once-feared imperialist rival state, as a respected officer on the bridge of Starfleet’s flagship.

Next Generation ’s time period — one century after Kirk’s Enterprise — wasn’t a nominal choice, but a commitment to moving the story of Star Trek forward. From the show’s foundations, Gene Roddenberry and his collaborators, new and old, set a precedent that the Federation would evolve. Therefore, in accordance with the utopian themes of the franchise, old enemies would in time become friends. Next Generation embraced The Original Series ’ nemeses and the rest of ’90s Trek saw that bet and raised it again, pulling many of Next Gen ’s villains into the heroic fold. Voyager welcomed a Borg crewmember and disincorporated the Borg empire; Deep Space Nine gave the franchise the first Ferengi Starfleet cadet, and brokered a Federation-Klingon-Romulan alliance in the face of an existential threat.

But Discovery — at least until it made its Olympic long-jump leap 900 years into the future — couldn’t move Star Trek forward. So long as it was set “immediately before Kirk’s Enterprise,” hemmed in by the constraints of a previously established era of Star Trek history, it could graft on new elements (like Spock’s secret human foster sister) but it couldn’t create from whole cloth (like a galaxy-wide shortage of starship fuel that nearly destroyed the Federation). Like its predecessor, the ill-fated Star Trek: Enterprise of the ’00s, it was doomed to hang like a remora on the side of the events of The Original Series , or, if you’ll pardon another fish metaphor, doomed like a goldfish that can only grow as large as its half-gallon fishbowl will allow.

Discovery ’s later, free seasons in the 32nd century have shown the Federation at its most vulnerable, a subtler echo of Picard ’s own season 1 swing at fallen institutions . (Fans of Voyager and Deep Space Nine know that this is an extremely rich vein of Trek storytelling.) In its third season, Discovery solved a galaxy-wide fuel crisis that had shattered the community of the Federation. In its fourth it fought for a fragile new Federation alliance and its millennia-old ideals.

And those seasons have also boldly committed to the idea of imagining the future’s future — 900 years of it. The centuries-old rift between Vulcans and Romulans is long healed, Ferengi serve as captains in Starfleet, the work of Doctor Noonien Soong has brought new medical technologies to the fore.

Even still, Discovery hasn’t been truly free in its third and fourth seasons. Star Trek: Picard was out there, forming new past elements of a post- Next Gen / Voy / DS9 era that Discovery had to abide by. And, after all, the show still had to make sure there was something for its own next season to come back to.

Blu del Barrio as Adira in Star Trek: Discovery. She kneels confused before a strange figure dressed in white with white hair, with red robed figures in the background.

But now — with Prodigy and Picard finished, and Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks locked into their settings of Star Trek’s established past, and Starfleet Academy and Section 31 not yet in production at the time that its final season would have been written — Discovery has reached the final final frontier for a Star Trek show. If you’re a Star Trek fan, that should excite you.

Not since Deep Space Nine in 1999 and Voyager in 2001 has a Star Trek series had the freedom to wrap up its run with the Federation in any state it wants to. With franchise flagship Next Generation at an end, and Voyager restricted to the Delta Quadrant only, Deep Space Nine used its last seasons to throw the Federation into all-out war, making sweeping changes to the established ficto-political norms of ’90s Trek. Voyager used its finale to do what Captain Picard never could: defang the Borg (mostly).

We don’t know exactly what Discovery will do with that freedom. Season 4 directors have talked about reaching “ into the past to get further into the future ,” and likened it to Indiana Jones. Official news releases have said the crew will “uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.” But speculating on what that means would be beside the point.

Discovery , the show about an intergalactically teleporting starship, can finally, actually, go anywhere. It’s been almost a quarter of a century since a beloved Star Trek series was so free to boldly go. Let’s hope they’re very bold indeed.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres with two episodes on April 4 on Paramount Plus.

14 biggest star trek updates: section 31, starfleet academy, strange new worlds & more.

Alex Kurtzman outlines his plans for the future of Star Trek to Variety, providing exciting updates on Section 31, Picard, Starfleet Academy and more!

  • Star Trek franchise teases exciting future with reveals on Section 31, Strange New Worlds, and more in recent interview.
  • Michelle Yeoh's Section 31 movie promises action-packed spy thrills in space, akin to Mission: Impossible.
  • Starfleet Academy set in 32nd century, with new sets and episodes for fan favorite series like Strange New Worlds.

The Star Trek franchise has just revealed a treasure trove of new information about Star Trek: Section 31 , season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and much more. With Star Trek: Discovery ending in 2024, and concerns over the implications of a potential Paramount merger, it's reassuring to discover that the future of the Star Trek franchise looks very bright indeed. Key figures like Alex Kurtzman and Eugene Roddenberry Jr. have revealed new details about the upcoming Star Trek movies , Michelle Yeoh's Section 31 , and a possible sequel to Star Trek: Picard in a brand-new interview.

In a Variety feature entitled The Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans , Adam B. Vary talks to a number of key figures involved with the current Star Trek TV shows and movies about the exciting future for the franchise. Talking to stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Michelle Yeoh, Adam B. Vary unearths some exclusive information about what to expect from Star Trek 's next few years on TV and in theaters.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

14 the first image of star trek: section 31 is released, michelle yeoh's georgiou meets a mystery figure.

The Variety feature gives Star Trek fans their first glimpse of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) back in action. Star Trek: Section 31 wrapped filming recently, so attention now turns to post-production ahead of a future release on Paramount+. The image shows Georgiou whispering something into the ear of a mysterious, but memorable looking character . Whether this is a Section 31 asset or one of the movie's antagonists is not yet clear.

Who this metal mohawked character with the tattoos and cybernetic augmentations will likely remain a mystery until such time as Star Trek: Section 31 releases a trailer. However, it's good to see Michelle Yeoh back in her trademark black leathers playing Georgiou again after such a long delay. The first image is an intriguing tease of things to come for Michelle Yeoh's appropriately top secret Section 31 movie.

13 Star Trek: Section 31 Features A Young Rachel Garrett

Played by hannibal's kacey rohl.

One of the biggest surprises from Variety 's Star Trek: Section 31 set report is the revelation that Georgiou will team up with a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl). Until now, the roles played by Section 31 's cast have been kept under wraps. Now it's been confirmed that Kacey Rohl will be playing the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C in Section 31 . All that's known about Garrett is how she dies, meaning that there's a lot of unexplored backstory for Section 31 to reveal.

Kacey Rohl starred as Abigail Hobbs in Hannibal , created by Star Trek: Discovery co-creator, Bryan Fuller.

Rachel Garrett's involvement in Star Trek: Section 31 could also narrow down when in the Star Trek timeline the movie is set. Rachel Garrett was a Starfleet officer in the early to mid 24th century, and died in 2344. This suggests that the Guardian of Forever didn't send Georgiou back to her own time in Star Trek: Discovery season 3 , but instead sent her to some point a few decades later.

Rachel Garrett: Star Trek’s Most Tragic Enterprise Captain Explained

12 michelle yeoh calls section 31 "mission: impossible in space", star trek's spy movie is more tom cruise than john le carré..

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh discussed her love for the character of Georgiou in the Variety piece, and gave an enticing tease of what to expect. Yeoh describes Star Trek: Section 31 as "" Mission: Impossible" in space " which is a neat elevator pitch that gives audiences a good idea of what to expect. Under the creative direction of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, the Mission: Impossible movies have become thrilling globetrotting adventures, filled with incredible stunts.

The idea of transposing that Mission: Impossible style to the Star Trek universe suggests that Michelle Yeoh's movie will be full of action and adventure. Star Trek: Section 31 writer Craig Sweeny backs this up, by explaining what Star Trek 's spy movie isn ' t . Read Craig Sweeny's quote below:

“I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field.

11 Section 31 Visit An Alien Nightclub

Georgiou visits a club full of classic star trek aliens..

When Adam B. Vary visits Michelle Yeoh on the set of Star Trek: Section 31 , she's preparing to shoot a scene inside an alien nightclub. From Quark's Bar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to the pleasure planet of Risa, there are many ways to unwind in the Star Trek universe. However, given that this is Section 31 , it's likely that the nightclub visited by Georgiou and Garrett will be a seedier location, perhaps where the mysterious mohawked figure is holding court.

Intriguingly, the Variety feature also reveals that the nightclub will be populated by some classic Star Trek aliens. This location is clearly some sort of hub where the movers and shakers of the galaxy are meeting up, making it a prime location for Section 31's best operatives to be seen. Adam B. Vary gives an enticing description of the action on set while filming this scene from Star Trek: Section 31 in a quote below:

A few minutes later, dozens of extras in all manner of outlandish evening wear file into the club, several of them made up as classic “Star Trek” aliens that fans might be surprised to see in this kind of swanky establishment.

10 Jonathan Frakes' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode Is A Hollywood Murder Mystery

Frakes says that it's “the best episode of television" he's ever done..

Jonathan Frakes is returning to direct an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 that he says is "the best" he's ever done. That's quite a claim, given the director's prolific output between Star Trek: The Next Generation and SNW season 3. Frakes' episode is reportedly a "Hollywood murder mystery", which invokes images of hard-boiled detectives and glamorous settings. It sounds like one more thing to be excited about as production on Strange New Worlds season 3 continues.

9 Starfleet Academy Confirmed To Take Place In Star Trek's 32nd Century

The show will build on star trek: discovery's established canon..

Alex Kurtzman confirms to Variety that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be set in the 32nd century, presumably following on from Star Trek: Discovery 's final season . The Variety feature astutely points out that, by setting Starfleet Academy in the largely unexplored 32nd century, it will reduce the amount of revision that its young adult audience will have to do. Interestingly, the feature also highlights that Star Trek has an aging fanbase, which makes a show like Starfleet Academy vital in building fandom's next generation .

Alex Kurtzman doesn't confirm if any of Star Trek: Discovery 's cast will be making the transition to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy . However, the confirmation of the 32nd century setting does make it more likely that Mary Wiseman's Tilly could appear in the show as an instructor . While casting is still being kept under wraps, Kurtzman and the team did reveal some more information about Starfleet Academy 's setting.

Starfleet Academy Show Is "Trying To Tell A Star Trek Story In A New Way", Says Tawny Newsome

8 starfleet academy will be set in san francisco, star trek's ya show is making the voyage home..

Set designs shared with Variety by Alex Kurtzman and production designer Matthew Davies reveal that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return to San Francisco . When Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew arrived in the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Earth was no longer a member of the Federation. This meant that Starfleet Headquarters, and a fledgling Starfleet Academy had moved off-world.

The designs reveal that the 32nd century Starfleet Academy will have " a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge ", cementing its location. San Francisco has always been Starfleet's home , so it's fitting that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will have its roots there. Rooting the show in San Francisco also gives Starfleet Academy a chance to explore what life on Earth looks like in Star Trek 's 32nd century.

7 Starfleet Academy Will Be Star Trek's Biggest-Ever Set

Every inch of pinewood toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage will be used..

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy appears to be literally building the titular educational establishment for use in the show, making it the biggest set ever constructed for Star Trek . Looking over the designs with Alex Kurtzman and Matthew Davies, Adam B. Vary gives a sense of the scale of the 32nd century's Starfleet Academy. Read his quote below:

a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada

6 The Enterprise Gets A New Science Lab In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

And there's a glimpse of ethan peck's spock at work..

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will debut a new science lab set , and it looks very impressive. Intriguingly, the new lab is described as having "a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench". Whether this means that Strange New Worlds will introduce its own cetacean ops, or continue Starfleet's love of whales , remains to be seen. Either way, the new set is an impressive addition that suggests Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) will need to upgraded facilities to solve some scientific conundrum in SNW season 3.

5 There's No Genre That Strange New Worlds Can't Do

"could it do muppets sure. could it do black and white, silent, slapstick maybe”.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman reaffirms that the Star Trek: The Original Series prequel can attempt any genre. Responding to Vary's question of whether there's a genre that Strange New Worlds couldn't do, Goldsman had an " impish " response. Read Goldsman's quote about a potential Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Muppet episode below:

“As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” [...] “Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!”

4 Strange New Worlds AR Wall Can Be Disorienting For The Cast

But not for everyone....

Elsewhere in the Variety feature, Anson Mount discusses Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' use of the AR wall to create alien backdrops. Where previous Star Trek shows had used a greenscreen, the LCD screens that make up SNW 's AR wall allow the actors to actually see the environments that they're acting against . While it's a benefit, it doesn't always create a great experience for the actors, as Anson Mount points out.

“The images on the walls start to move in a way that makes no sense,” [...] “You end up having to focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.”

However, Ethan Peck says that he doesn't get disoriented by the AR wall, wryly joking that Spock wouldn't be fazed by it, so he's simply method acting. Hilariously, Anson Mount also reveals that they refer to the AR wall as the Holodeck. The route that actors take to the AR wall on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is even decorated with posters of the holodeck, and a sign that reads "Weclome to the Holodeck" in the classic Star Trek font.

Enterprise’s Holodeck Is Star Trek’s “Most Imaginative” Invention, Says TNG Producer

3 alex kurtzman is considering a "follow up" to star trek: picard, could patrick stewart get his wish for a final picard movie.

While news of Star Trek: Legacy is absent from Variety 's sprawling feature about the future of the franchise, Alex Kurtzman does drop a small hint about continuing the story of Star Trek: Picard . It's long been suspected that Star Trek: Section 31 will pave the way for more Paramount+ exclusive movies . This is confirmed by Kurtzman, who is already considering potential follow-ups should Section 31 be a success. A follow-up Star Trek: Picard movie is one of the projects that Kurtzman is considering, but there's no further information as to what this would be.

2 Toby Haynes' Star Trek Movie Is An Origin Story For The Entire Franchise

Is star trek's origin movie set for 2026's 60th anniversary.

Variety has confirmed that Seth Grahame-Smith's Star Trek movie, to be directed by Andor 's Toby Haynes, will be an origin story for the entire franchise . More interesting still is that the movie is rumored to be "on track" for pre-production to begin by the end of this year. This suggests that the theatrical release Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie could form part of the 60th anniversary celebrations in 2026. Star Trek: First Contact did something very similar for the 30th anniversary celebrations in 1996, so it will be interesting to see how a new movie continues that story 30 years later.

1 The Flight Attendant's Steve Yockey Is Working On Star Trek 4

Yockey is the latest writer to work on the kelvin timeline's finale..

While Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie currently appears to be on track, Star Trek 4 remains in development hell. The Variety feature states that Paramount still intends to give Chris Pine's Star Trek movies a final chapter, but not much has changed since the last disappointing update. However, it has been confirmed that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey is now working on a new draft of Star Trek 4 , but there's no further information than this. While the Kelvin Timeline movies still being stuck at the scripting stage may be disappointing, it's hard to deny that the future of the wider Star Trek franchise looks very bright indeed.

Steve Yockey Star Trek

Steve Yockey , creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “ Star Trek 4.”

Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. Hikaru Sulu) and Simon Pegg (as chief engineer Montgomery Scott). ( Variety first reported the news in its cover story on the future of the “Star Trek” franchise.)

Yockey’s involvement is the most promising sign of forward momentum the project has had since. The playwright started his TV writing career on the MTV series “Awkward” and “Scream,” before joining the writing staff of “Supernatural” for four seasons. His latest series, the Sandman universe adaptation “Dead Boy Detectives,” will premiere on Netflix in April.

Paramount is also developing a separate “Star Trek” project, with writer Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and director by Toby Haynes (“Black Mirror: USS Callister”), that would feature a new cast in a story meant as a kind of origin story for the franchise. A project with screenwriter Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) first announced in 2021 also remains in development.

Yockey is represented by CAA and Slate PR.
