Information

whale watching tour olafsvik

Your whale watching trip begins in the fishing town of Olafsvik. We’ll meet at the town harbor and board a traditional Icelandic boat. From there, we’ll sail out into the open ocean and towards the iconic Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Along the way, we’ll search for the whales that reside in Iceland’s waters.

We can’t tell you exactly where we’ll go. Our knowledgeable local captains will take you to that day’s best whale watching spot, based on the season and sea conditions. This flexibility maximizes your chance of spotting a whale.

Your captain will tell you all about the whales and their important place in Icelandic culture. Unfortunately, whale watching is not a precise science, so we can’t 100% guarantee that you’ll see something. However, our captains have been sailing the Icelandic seas for years and will do everything possible to make sure you see whales. Thanks to their expertise, our whale watching tours in Olafsvik have over a 90% success rate!

Arctic Adventures is part of the IceWhale Program. That means we’re committed to providing sustainable whale watching experiences that don’t interfere with the whales’ habitat. Our expert captains keep a safe distance from the gentle giants and make sure not to disturb them.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula is famous for the toothed-whales that visit its waters, such as orcas, sperm whales, and pilot whales. These whales can be seen throughout the year. However, whale sightings are more frequent during the winter and early summer, with the best time to see them between April and June. Humpbacks, minke whales, and white-beaked dolphins are also spotted throughout the year.

Among the whales that visit Iceland’s waters is the orca, who sits at the top of the Icelandic food chain. Iceland’s killer whales are fish eaters. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them use ultrasonic frequencies to trap herring near the water’s surface before they enjoy a fishy feast.

You’ll also have the chance to see sperm whales. These enormous beasts measure up to 65 ft and are the largest predators in the world. Because of this notoriety, books like Moby Dick have painted sperm whales as animals that should be feared. In reality, humans are in no danger from sperm whales, who prefer to eat squid and other cephalopods. Keep an eye out to see these creatures frolic in the waves and throw streams of water into the air!

We might also see humpback whales, playful dolphins, curious seals, adorable puffins and a host of other wildlife. If you love wildlife and want to see it to the spectacular backdrop of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, then be sure to join this whale watching tour.

We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.

The Kolviður Fund   is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

The Whale Watching Ólafsvík Tour

The Whale Watching Ólafsvík tour is your best chance to see wild Orcas in Iceland. Other species that are commonly spotted here include Sperm whales and Pilot whales . Sail along the beautiful coastline of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and enjoy viewing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. This tour is an excellent addition to any self-drive holiday on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Departing from the fishing village of Ólafsvík on the Snæfellsnes peninsula , you will sail out to sea with your experienced captain and guide. The dramatic landscape of the peninsula offers the perfect backdrop for a boat tour in this stunning area.

This area offers the best chance to see Orcas, Killer Whales in the wild. The highest Orca sighting rate is in the spring and early summer, from April to early July. However, there is also a chance to see them throughout the summer. Male Sperm whales are most often spotted between April and June. From July to the fall, the possibility of seeing large pods of pilot whales increases. These are often seen in pods that count hundreds of whales. Other species that can be spotted in this area include Humpback whales and minke whales. White-beaked dolphins also regularly make an appearance.

During the tour, your expert captain will get as close as possible to the whales without disturbing them. Once back on dry land, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in Ólafsvík and continue your exploration of the area.

Yes, a whale watching tour is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy. There is no age limit on this tour.

You should wear warm clothes as your first layer, and we recommend bringing a waterproof outer layer in case of rain. Keep in mind that it can get colder out at sea than it is on land. It is not recommended to wear sandals on this tour.

As whales are wild animals it can be hard to predict when sightings are possible. Orcas can swim up to 120 km per day, so they can leave the area quickly if they so wish. They can also appear quickly is they want to do that!

December and March are usually good months for sightings in the winter time, and in the summertime, they are often spotted in April, May and June. However, this can always change.

As the Orcas are wild there is no way to predict if it’s more likely to see them in the morning or in the afternoon.

Reservations can be canceled 24 hours prior to departure without penalty. Cancellations received less than 24 hours prior to departure are non-refundable.

Cancellations must be submitted in writing to  [email protected] .

This tour begins at the picturesque village of Olafsvik, where we will board our trusty Icelandic vessel and head towards the Snæfellsnes peninsula, in search of the magnificent ocean giants, who visit Iceland’s waters. Our precise destination will be determined based upon the season, sea conditions, and prevailing local knowledge, about where whales are usually seen, ensuring that we have the very best chance to see these majestic creatures in the flesh.

The area is famous for the many toothed-whales that visit its waters, including orcas, sperm whales, and pilot whales, offering visitors the chance to see some of the most iconic marine creatures in the entire world. As a general rule, orcas are seen during the winter and early summer months, with sightings common between April and June, especially in deeper waters. Male sperm whales, are also common in June, while we also often see humpback and minke whales, as well as white-beaked dolphins. Our expert captain will take you as close as possible to these gentle giants, always making sure that the boat does not interfere with them, ensuring that you have the chance to see them feeding and playing.

The expert guide will also provide you with plenty of information about these incredible creatures and their relationship to Iceland. Whale watching is not an exact science, and we are unable to guarantee that we will find whales, however, our captains are local experts and will do everything they can to ensure that you see these magnificent creatures in the flesh.

This awe-inspiring tour is perfect for people who love wildlife, with the opportunity to see puffins, a variety of seabirds and whales, in the shadow of spectacular Icelandic scenery!

More about Icelandic Sperm Whales

Sperm whale breaching in Atlantic Ocean in Iceland

The whale watching experience provides a profound demonstration of the power and majesty of marine life in our world. With hope and a little bit of luck, we see these creatures in their own habitat. The Icelandic word for orca is Háhyrningur (which translates to high-horn, in reference to their large dorsal fin) is an apex predator, meaning that no other animals feed on them. It is a fish eater and generally feeds on herring during their migration. They are famous for their unique hunting techniques, where they use ultrasonic frequencies to herd herring near the surface of the ocean before they feed. To see these majestic, complex predators frolicking in the waters beneath the mighty Snæfellsjökull glacier, is a truly incredible experience.

The Icelandic sperm whale is equally as impressive, measuring up to 20 meters, it is the largest predator in the entire world. It is also famous in literature, with the famous white whale in the novel Moby Dick, being from the species: although in reality, they are far more gentle and friendly than in the book. They generally feed on squid, which means that they are usually found in deep waters. Seeing them playing in the water and throwing bursts of water into the air, is an unforgettable experience, which will remain with you forever.

Breidafjordur Bay Whale Watching Tour with Transfer from Olafsvik in Snaefellsnes Peninsula

See the whales of Iceland on this whale watching tour of Breiðafjörður Fjord on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Description

Come along on an excursion of the marine life of Breiðafjörður Bay. This whale watching tour is perfect for all nature lovers who are travelling the Snæfellsnes peninsula and want to add an adventurous twist to their holiday.

You will set sails from the little village of Ólafsvík and head straight out into Breiðafjörður Bay, where your captain will find the best place to spot the magnificent whales. As you cruise the ocean, your expert guide will tell you all about each creature you see and answer any questions you may have about the area.

The oceans along the Snæfellsnes coastline is the best place to see two of Iceland’s top predators; Orcas, also known as killer whales, and sperm whales. The Orcas are apex predators, which mean that no other animal feeds on them, while the majestic sperm whale is the world’s largest predatory animal.

Other species of whale also make Breiðafjörður Bay their home, such as minke whales, harbour porpoises, acrobatic white-beaked dolphins and enormous humpback whales. On rare occasions, pilot whales have been spotted migrating from the high seas towards the island in search of food.

Breiðafjörður Bay is also known for its diverse birdlife, so you should keep an eye out for those brightly coloured beaks of puffins and arctic terns as you sail along the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Snæfellsnes combines all the wonders of Iceland. There you can find stunning waterfalls, imposing cliffs, jagged lava fields, sandy shores and amazing wildlife. Looming over the area is Snæfellsjökull, a 7000-year-old stratovolcano with a glacier covering its summit.

Don't hesitate. Grab your chance now to see the whales, dolphins, birds and breathtaking landscapes of West Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.

Whale Watching from Olafsvik

Sperm whales and orcas (killer whales), two of the ocean’s top predators, are more likely to be spotted near the Snaefellsnes Peninsula coastline than anywhere else in Iceland. Their season is late winter, early spring, and early summer. It’s common to observe other species, such as minke, humpback, and pilot whales, later in the summer and in the fall. Join our Olafsvik whale-watching cruise to see the magnificent whales in their natural habitat.

Watching Whales in Olafsvik

During this extraordinary excursion, we enter the water near Snaefellsnes where ocean giants swim beneath the majestic Snaefellsjökull Glacier. This stunning coastline offers the best opportunity in Iceland to witness toothed whales like orcas, sperm whales, and pilot whales.

There is a chance to see orcas (killer whales) throughout the year, but they are most frequently spotted in the winter, spring, and early summer, from February to early July. They occasionally appear in July and August, but by September, we are usually observing new species.

Sperm Whales

Male sperm whales occasionally appear on trips later in the year and are typically sighted between roughly March and June out in deeper water.

Other Species

We typically search for Minke whales, pilot whales, humpback whales, and white-beaked dolphins in the late summer and early fall, but you never know what you might find in nature. Blue whales, fin whales, sei whales, and northern bottlenose whales have all been more infrequent guests on our cruises.

Best Place to see Orcas & Sperm Whales in Iceland

Nowhere else in Iceland is there a better chance to see two of the ocean’s top predators, sperm whales and orcas, than along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula coastline.

The orcas are more often seen in late winter, spring and into early summer, between February/March to June/July. The orcas can be seen sometimes in July and occasionally even into August but become rare at this time of year. The best months usually to see them is April and May but of course it is all down to nature.

Male sperm whales can be seen in spring and early summer in the deeper water of the fjord so it is quite weather dependent being able to get out to see them.

Snaefellsnes is Famous for its Variety of Whale Species

We also regularly see minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises. On some occasions we have the privilege of watching pilot whales migrating past the peninsula in large aggregations. On very rare occasions blue whales, fin whales, sei whales and northern bottlenose whales have also been spotted. The landscape is magnificent around the glacier Snaefellsjökull, and even more so from sea.

Daily departures from Ólafsvík:

Season 2023: From Feb 15 to Sept 30 10:00 and 14:00

PLEASE NOTE: All departures are subject to weather conditions!

Duration: Approx. 3 hours

VERY WARM CLOTHING IS ESSENTIAL!

We recommend checking our facebook page where we regularly post photos from our whale watching tours in Snaefellsnes.

In the event of  no whale or dolphin sighting , passengers will be given a reschedule ticket for another trip on any other day during the season. Please check our terms and conditions for more details.
