Live reviews

They were amazing! Very entertaining. Great artists. The venue was great. Clean bathrooms. Great drinks. No lines. Great sound.

They came out sooo late. Would prefer a bit earlier.

Also they didn’t sing to live music. Last time they came to SF they played with a band with real instruments. I was surprised they did not this time. It’s important we keep the live music on the shows. Recorded music is not good for real artists.

The show was excellent but we had to wait for more than 4 hours and also was postponed from Friday to Saturday without any notification. I heard about it because a friend heard something in the radio only 2 hours before the concert begins.

Cuban Hip-Hop Group Orishas Reunite, Unveil Tour Dates & New Single

Cuba's original rappers will release a reunion single June 17, then perform comeback concerts in August and September. Hear a preview of "Cuba Isla Bella."

Cuban trio Orishas will play a series of comeback concerts in the United States in August and September.

Rappers Yotuel, Roldán and Ruzzo will be backed by a full Cuban band on their first trek together in seven years.

The reunited group will release a new single, “Cuba Isla Bella,” this Friday (June 17). It was first announced by Orishas on social media , and has been playing on radio in Havana for the last few weeks. The emotional tribute to the island brings dance-pop flavor to Orishas’ signature urban Afro-Cuban sound, and features artists well-known to fans of Cuban music and followers of the recent Latin music charts: Descemer Bueno, Gente de Zona, Issac Delgado, Pedrito Martinez, Laritza Bacallao, Leoni Torres and Buena Fe .

Orishas Return to Cuban Roots on New Song ‘Cuba Isla Bella’

SZA, Tyler, the Creator, Blink-182, The Killers, Future X Metro Boomin & More to Headline 2024…

“Cuba Isla Bella” is a euphoric Cuban power anthem that captures the current heady moment for Cuban musicians with the lyrical feeling and rhythmic roots of the island’s musical traditions. Although, like many Cuban songs before it, it is a nostalgia vehicle that talks about a longing for and anticipated return to the island, it is performed by contemporary artists who were some of the first to leave Cuba under Castro without breaking ties to the island. The members of Orishas and guests on the album continued to visit and perform in Cuba over the years while living abroad.

It is also a song produced with commercial savvy; “Cuba Isla Bella” can be expected to go right to U.S. Latin radio.

The members of Orishas are seizing a timely moment to reclaim and amplify the international following the group gained over ten years, after premiering in 1999 with music that was very Cuban, innovative, and virtually unheard outside of Cuba. The then-Paris-based group’s three studio albums collectively sold over a million copies. Emigrante , released in 2003, won a Latin Grammy for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album.

Cuban Rapper Yotuel on Starring in ‘El Acompanante’ & What’s Next for Orishas

While Orishas’ original Cuban hip-hop was born in Havana’s rap scene, “Cuba Isla Bella” reflects the evolution of the careers of the group’s members, particularly Yotuel Romero. In recent years, he has lived in Miami and written songs for Latin artists, including Ricky Martin . Romero originally wrote “Cuba Isla Bella” as a proposed track for Martin’s 2015 album A Quien Quiera Escuchar , on which he collaborated as both a composer and performer.

Martin did record an arrangement of the song under the title “Isla Bella.” But its Cuban version further served Yotuel as an inspiration for bringing back Orishas.

Tickets for the first concert, in Fort Myers, FL, go on sale June 20.

These are the dates of Orishas comeback tour:

Aug. 12 — Fort Myers, FL, Lee Civic Center Aug. 13 — Chicago, IL, Festival Cubano Aug. 19 — New Orleans, LA, House of Blues Aug. 20 — Miami, FL, Filmore Theater Aug. 25 — New York, NY, Irving Plaza Aug. 26 — Washington, DC, Howard Theater Aug. 27 — Tampa, FL, Masonic Theater Sept. 02 — San Francisco, CA – Mezzanine Club Sept. 03 — Los Angeles, CA – The Regent Theater Sept. 04 — Las Vegas, NV – House of Blues

Cuba's Best-Known Hip-Hop Group Orishas Returns

Roque Planas

National Reporter, HuffPost

When Yotuel Romero Manzanares picked up the phone to call his two bandmates from the long-defunct group Orishas, he hadn’t spoken to either of them in seven years.

It was last year , and the rapper-turned-producer had just scouted talent in his native country of Cuba. He felt optimistic about the future of the Cuban music scene. But he wondered whether he should take another shot at his own pioneering hip-hop group, Orishas, which made an international name for itself singing songs about cutting sugar cane, the working-class Havana neighborhood of Cayo Hueso , and the African gods masquerading with saints’ names from the Afro-Cuban religious tradition of santería.

The hip-hop group Orishas was in Las Vegas in 2007. The group has reunited and is touring the U.S. for the first time since breaking up in 2009.

“Nostalgia overcame us all,” Yotuel, who goes by his first name, told HuffPost. “I wanted a second chance ― a chance to take everything I’d learned as a soloist, moving in the same direction, but climbing that last step we hadn’t reached.”

With origins in Cuba’s underground hip-hop scene, Orishas burst onto the international stage in 1999, with a self-titled album recorded in Paris that interspersed rap lyrics with Afro-Cuban percussion and the melodies of son, a traditional Cuban song form that influenced salsa. They recorded three studio discs, but disbanded in 2009. Partly because the U.S. trade embargo keeps Cuban musicians cut off from international distribution, no other major band blending traditional sounds with hip-hop stepped into the void when they broke up.

All three members of the group say they didn’t need to speak during their long separation, as they spread across three countries. “It was a pause that extended itself a bit,” said Roldán González Rivero, the silver-haired singer who carries the group’s melodies and looks not unlike a Hispanic version of George Clooney.

Roldán, from Cuban hip-hop group Orishas, says he's the "Cuban George Clooney." via @UforiaMusica @POWERSIESTA pic.twitter.com/lsk1ubeILO — Jessica Weiss (@jessweiss1) August 22, 2016

“A group is like a marriage, like a couple,” said Roldán, who is also known by his first name. “It was important to get a bit of distance, to recharge our batteries a bit. I think if we had stayed together, we would have ruined what we’d created.”

Now the band is back, riding a wave of new interest in Cuba and touring the United States. They’ll play Thursday in New York City’s Irving Plaza before continuing on to Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas.

An Immigrant Group

When President Barack Obama traveled to Cuba for his historic visit, marking the first time a U.S. head of state had visited the island since Calvin Coolidge showed up aboard a warship in 1928, Yotuel was there. He was among the guests invited by Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes to witness the historic cooling of Cold War hostilities.

“I gave [Obama] my hand and thanked him for breaking the ice,” he said. “It was magical.”

Returning to the island to record for the first time marked a turning point for the band. Orishas had made its success in France, seeking opportunities beyond an island where musicians face the dual difficulties of the U.S. trade embargo and a communist government that viewed hip-hop as a suspicious import from the United States.

But despite selling more than a million records , the band broke up in 2009 and members went their separate ways. Hiram Riveri Medina, who goes by the name Ruzzo and is known for his staccato rhymes, now lives in Pamplona, Spain. Roldán stayed in France. Yotuel, the most entrepreneurial of the trio, settled in Miami, becoming a producer and appearing in films.

The sense of coming home imbues the first song they’ve put out since reuniting, “Cuba, Isla Bella,” a track laden with nostalgia for their home country ― a theme that will be familiar to anyone who’s followed the band’s progression. The cut features a host of other Latin musicians from on and off the island, including percussionist Pedrito Martínez, singer Laritza Bacallao and reggaeton group Gente de Zona.

Orishas takes its name from the gods of African religious traditions associated with present-day Angola. Africans brought to the island in chains during the colonial period protected their spirituality by renaming their gods as saints, giving Cuba the religious tradition known today as “santería,” which is practiced widely on the island, even among Catholics. The early santeros managed to preserve the language of prayer, which the band has used in its recordings. The new track opens with such a prayer, which the band says it chose to bless their reunification.

“Racism exists all over the world. But in Cuba you see it a little less. In Cuba, no one kills you for being black.” - Yotuel

“Orishas has always been a group that talks about its roots ― the fact of being immigrants, of leaving our country, the desire to return,” Roldán said. “It’s what we know and what we need. We’ll always be foreigners. I don’t have a homeland anymore. I’m not in France and I’m not in Cuba ― I’m in limbo. I’ve got my buttcheeks sitting on two chairs.”

Other parts of the immigrant life have been hard for them to deal with. The highly publicized spate of killings of unarmed, young black men makes Yotuel, who is black, worry about the safety of his son ― something he says he didn’t think about in Cuba. “Racism exists all over the world,” he said. “But in Cuba you see it a little less. In Cuba, no one kills you for being black.”

Future Plans

Despite their decision to leave, the limitations of Cuba weigh on the band as well. To record the “Cuba, Isla Bella” track, they paid $900 per day for studio sessions. That’s a sum of money they say the vast majority of Cubans, who earn an average salary of $25 per month, could never afford.

Ruzzo, whose quiet demeanor masks an aggressive stage presence, lamented the fact that in a country with such a strong musical tradition, musicians have to struggle with the government to gain access to venues and can rarely cobble together the money to cut an album. “Cuba’s musical potential is something that not just any country has,” he said.

But for the moment, Orishas is back. After the U.S. tour, they plan to return to the island to cut an “unplugged” record with Cuban musicians.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Shatters Records and Becomes the Most-Watched Music Film on Disney+

'Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)' made its streaming debut on Disney+ on Thursday night

Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour concert film is still shattering records — even as fans are able to enjoy it from home.

Just days after the full-length version of the pop superstar's concert film, dubbed Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) , made its streaming debut on Disney+ , it's become the most-watched music films on the platform of all time.

According to a report by Deadline , the movie documenting Swift's career-spanning concert broke records by earning 4.6 million views in just the three days after it dropped last Thursday at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET.

Within the past weekend alone, fans of the Grammy winner, 34, watched 16.2 million hours of the film, which has a runtime of three-and-a-half hours, or the entire length of her Eras Tour set. (According to Deadline, Disney+ counts a view as the total stream time divided by a title's runtime.)

Scott Eisen/TAS23/Getty

In becoming the most-watched music film on the streaming service, The Eras Tour beats out popular films like The Beatles: Get Back , Black Is King: A Film by Beyoncé , Swift's own folklore: the long pond studio sessions , among other titles, per Deadline.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) , which is exclusive to Disney+, includes performances of several, additional acoustic songs that had previously been omitted from the original theatrical release and VOD version. Now, fans can see footage of the singer-songwriter's stripped-down performances of fan-favorite songs "Death by a Thousand Cuts," "I Can See You," "Maroon" and "You Are in Love."

When the hitmaker released the on-demand cut of The Eras Tour in time for her birthday in December, she also added back in performances of “The Archer,” “Long Live” and "Wildest Dreams,” which did not appear in the cinematic version due to length.

 Kevin Winter/TAS23/Getty

The movie's successful streaming release is among several of the records Swift has broken since her concert film first arrived in October.

Not only did it become sell the most-ever tickets in the first day of ticket sales at AMC Theatres, it had the highest-grossing opening of a concert film in history. The project, directed by Sam Welch, also became one of the highest-earning concert films of all time — being second only to Michael Jackson 's 2009 documentary This Is It.

Shortly after the initial release — which crossed the $200 million mark at the global box office just three weeks after its debut — Swift reflected on the film's success on Instagram .

She wrote at the time, “What a truly mind blowing thing you’ve turned The Eras Tour Concert Film into."

“I’ve been watching videos of you guys in the theaters dancing and prancing and recreating choreography, creating inside jokes, casting spells, getting engaged, and just generally creating the exact type of joyful chaos we’re known for 😇," the "Karma" singer added.

The Eras Tour was originally filmed over the course of Swift's run of shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in August 2023.

Jeff Lynne's ELO announce final tour: How to get tickets to Over and Out

orishas tour 2023

Jeff Lynne’s ELO dazzled audiences with a show of sonic perfection when the band reappeared in the U.S. in 2018-2019.

Now, the melodic wizard and his ace musical comrades will hit the road a final time for The Over and Out Tour. A 27-date outing will commence Aug. 24 in Palm Desert, California and wrap Oct. 25 in Los Angeles. In between, Lynne and ELO will visit cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Houston and Washington, D.C.

An ELO presale begins at 10 a.m. local time March 20, with the general sale starting at 10 a.m. local time March 22. VIP experiences will also go on sale at 10 a.m. local time March 20. Tickets will be available via livenation.com and details about the VIP packages at jefflynneselo.com.

During the band’s last U.S. run , Lynne offered a 20-song setlist that included Electric Light Orchestra gems “Evil Woman,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Telephone Line” and “Do Ya,” all reproduced with stunning clarity. Even the underappreciated and much-maligned “Xanadu” from the 1980 Olivia Newton-John movie received its due.

In addition to his prowess as a producer, Lynne was also a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The collective also received a nod in the live production with a comforting rendition of “Handle with Care.”

Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023 and ELO ushered into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

As Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Hits One Year, Let’s Take a Look at Its Staggering Numbers

O n March 17, it will officially have been one year since Taylor Swift's Eras Tour kicked off in Glendale, Ariz. In the 12 months since that fateful first show, Swift has broken untold records , made history as TIME's 2023 Person of the Year , cultivated a new legion of NFL fans , and announced her forthcoming 11th studio album— The Tortured Poets Department , out April 19—among a litany of other accomplishments.

By the end of 2023—less than halfway through its scheduled 152-show run—the Eras Tour had earned over $1 billion to become the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. During that period, every city where Swift played got a substantial economic boost from the so-called "Taylor Swift effect," a term that refers to the singer's unprecedented ability to influence consumer behavior. Following the inaugural U.S. leg of Eras, the U.S. Travel Association estimated that the tour's total economic impact likely exceeded $10 billion.

In the new year, Swift's staggering popularity seems to somehow still be on the rise. Less than a week after watching her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, win the Super Bowl, Swift played to the biggest concert crowd of her career while performing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia during the first run of 2024 Eras dates, following four shows in Tokyo.

In honor of the first anniversary of the start of the Eras Tour, we're taking a numerical look back at the biggest year of Swift's career to date.

Read More: 2023 Person of the Year: Taylor Swift

Number of Eras shows and cities

Swift will have played 83 shows across 30 cities as of March 17. Of those shows, 53 took place in the U.S. in 20 different cities stateside. The remaining 30 were part of the Latin America and Asia-Pacific legs of the tour. By the end of 2024, Swift is set to play a grand total of 152 Eras shows across 54 cities worldwide.

Number of surprise songs

In addition to her 40-plus-song set list, Swift has played at least two "surprise songs" per Eras show. Taking repeats into account, she has performed 145 different tracks (counting mashups of repeat songs as unique entries) as her 167 surprise offerings.

Number of special guests

From MUNA to Sabrina Carpenter to Haim, Swift's Eras stops have featured 10 different opening acts. She has also brought out eight other special guests, from Maren Morris to frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, to join her on stage at various shows.

Number of people in attendance at her biggest show to date

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Melbourne, Australia

Swift played three back-to-back shows at MCG on Feb. 16, 17, and 18 that were each attended by a record 96,000 people for a three-day total of 288,000 concertgoers. Ed Sheeran, who drew a crowd of around 109,500 each of the two nights he played at MCG in 2023, still holds the venue's single-night attendance record. But that's largely due to the fact that Swift's stage setup took up more room in the arena, cutting down on the number of available seats.

Number of Eras tickets sold

Swift sold an estimated 4.35 million tickets across 60 tour dates within concert trade publication Pollstar's chart year of Nov. 17, 2022 to Nov. 15, 2023. That's an average of 72,500 tickets per show, with each ticket costing an average of $238.95. Using those numbers to extrapolate across shows played since then, Swift has likely now sold around 6.02 million tickets.

Total Eras Tour gross

Based on the approximately $17.32 million in ticket revenue Pollstar estimates Swift earned for each of the first 60 Eras dates, her total tour gross currently sits somewhere around $1.44 billion. By the end of 2024, the tour is expected to have brought in an astronomical $2.165 billion. For comparison, the second-highest grossing tour of all time, Elton John’s multi-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, sold six million tickets over the course of 328 shows to earn $939 million.

Total Eras merch revenue

Taylor Swift Fans Descend On Melbourne Cricket Ground

According to reports from different venues, Pollstar estimates Eras attendees were spending an average of $40 per person on merch at the first 60 Eras shows. That puts Swift's tour merch revenue at an estimated $240.8 million—not including non-concert day purchases—following her first run of 2024 Eras dates.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour box-office earnings

Since its Oct. 13 release in theaters, Swift's record-breaking three-and-a-half-hour concert film has grossed $180,756,269 in North America and $261,656,269 globally at the box office. An extended edition of the movie became available to rent via video on demand services on Swift's birthday, Dec. 13, followed by the longest and most complete version of the film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) , arriving on streaming on Disney+ March 14.

Number of new songs

Since the Eras Tour began, Swift has released two re-recorded albums, Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version) , and one new single, "You're Losing Me (From the Vault)," for a total of 45 new songs (including re-recorded songs and vault tracks). In their first week of sales, Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , which featured one Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit, and 1989 (Taylor's Version) , which featured seven Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits, sold 716,000 equivalent album units and 1.653 million equivalent album units, respectively. "You're Losing Me (From the Vault)" tallied 8.7 million official streams and sold 19,000 downloads in the U.S. in the first two days after its Nov. 29 debut, according to Luminate .

Bruce Springsteen returns to the stage in Phoenix after health issues postponed his 2023 world tour

PHOENIX — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage Tuesday evening at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour.

In September Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024 , citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease.

“The Boss” arrived on stage to an audience chorus of “Bruuuuce!” Wearing dark jeans and a rolled up red plaid flannel shirt, he had the energy of a man half his age. His signature “One, two, three, four” was the only thing that separated most songs, showing no signs of his illness from the previous year. Once he shouted, “Good evening, Arizona” the show was off and running.

Springsteen spoke to the crowd briefly about his illness prior to playing his final song “I’ll See You In My Dreams” solo on stage. “Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time. . . . I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

The 29-song show came in just under three hours, but “The Boss” hardly broke a sweat while showing off a strong voice, all the while dancing, tearing into guitar solos, playing the harmonica and even ripping his shirt open near the end of the show.

On stage with Springsteen was the legendary E Street Band which features drummer Max Weinberg, bassist Garry Tallent, keyboardists Roy Bittan and Charlie Giordano, guitarists Stevie Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, saxophonist Jake Clemons — nephew of original and still missed sax man Clarence Clemons who died in 2011 — guitarist and violin player Soozie Tyrell, a full horn and brass section and four backup vocalists. The only missing member of the band was Springsteen’s wife, singer and guitarist Patti Scialfa.

Springsteen performed most of the hits in his vast collection, minus “Born In The U.S.A.,” but he added covers “Nightshift” by the Commodores, “Because The Night” by Patti Smith Group, and a surprise: “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. Fans went wild for “No Surrender,” “Born To Run,” “Rosalita,” “Dancing In The Dark,” “Glory Days” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” that left the rocker grinning from ear-to-ear as he conducted fans singing along like his own chorus.

This year has been particularly challenging for Springsteen. In addition to his health issues, in January his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, a fan favorite who could frequently be seen dancing at his shows, died . She was 98.

Two days after her death, Springsteen performed at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event, which honored Jon Bon Jovi for his musical achievements and philanthropic efforts.

The 2024 edition of the tour kicked off in Phoenix and ends Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Canada. It hits 17 countries across 52 dates, including a special performance on Sept. 15 where Springsteen will headline the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Taylor Swift, The Eras Tour

Swift explained in an Instagram post announcing The Eras Tour in November 2022 that the tour will be a “journey through the musical eras” of her past 10 albums: 2006’s Taylor Swift ; 2008’s Fearless ; 2010’s Speak Now ; 2012’s Red ; 2014’s 1989 ; 2017’s Reputation ; 2019’s Lover ; 2020’s Folklore and Evermore ; and 2022’s Midnights . “I’m enchanted to announce my next tour: Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!) The first leg of the tour will be in stadiums across the US, with international dates to be announced as soon as we can! Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me: @paramore, @radvxz, @phoebebridgers, @girlinred, @whereismuna, @haimtheband, @gracieabrams, @gayle and @owennmusic. I can’t WAIT to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming 🥰

In a TikTok comment in November 2022, Swift confirmed that “Delicate,” her third single from Reputation , will be on the set list for The Eras Tour. The confirmation came after a TikTok user named Alex posted a video of her singing along to 2018 clip of Swift performing “Delicate” on her Reputation Tour. “Petition to bring this back for eras tour,” the user wrote on the video. Swift responded in the comments with “Done.”

At 3 a.m. ET on October 21, 2022, three hours after the release of Midnights , Swift announced that she released seven more songs as part of a deluxe version of the album  titled Midnights (3am Edition). “ Surprise! I think of Midnights as a complete concept album, with those 13 songs forming a full picture of the intensities of that mystifying, mad hour. However! There were other songs we wrote on our journey to find that magic 13,” she tweeted at the time. She accompanied the tweet with a post that explained that the time 3 a.m. means to her. “What keeps you up at night? It’s a momentary glimmer of distraction,” she wrote. “The tiniest notion of reminiscent thought that wanders off into wondering, the spark that lights a tinderbox of fixation. And now it is irreversible. The flame has caught. You’re wide awake.”

Taylor Swift’s The Eras opening acts include Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers, Haim, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams and more artists. Two of Swift’s The Eras Tour opening acts have been featured on her songs: Haim, who was featured on the “No Body, No Crime” from Swift’s 2020 album Evermore; and Phoebe Bridgers, who was featured on “Nothing New” from her 2021 album Red (Taylor’s Version) . “I got this random text from Aaron Dessner that was really weirdly worded for him,” she said. “And I was like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ And as I was reading it, I [realised], ‘Oh, my God, it’s from Taylor Swift,'” Bridgers told Billboard in 2022. “We started texting about all kinds of stuff. It was just a total high. It felt like when you meet someone at a party and you’re in the corner all night being like, ‘Me too!’”.
