50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are fast, long, and super forgiving.  Incredibly solid feel.  Surprisingly high launch and spin despite their strong lofts.

tour edge e722 5 iron

Introduction

For 2022, Tour Edge Exotics has released another split line – E and C.  The C stands for Competition, a line geared toward the highly skilled player.  E stands Extreme, as in extreme forgiveness and extreme distance.  If more consistency and length sound appealing to you, you just might be an E player and a good fit for the E722 irons.

tour edge e722 5 iron

While the C722 irons evolved to move closer to the players category, the E722 irons lean more toward super game improvement.  Compared to the previous version, the E721, the E722 looks to have a slightly thicker top line and equal or greater offset .  For players that get confidence and comfort from a bigger club head, this is a great change.

tour edge e722 5 iron

One thing that I really like about the TEE E722 irons is that there isn’t any “extra” hanging out beyond the top line .  This is a big iron, but it still looks like an iron, not a hybrid.  For players that want maximum forgiveness but don’t want to play a set of hybrids or hybrid-irons, the E722 might be the perfect solution.

Sound & Feel

I tested the E722 and C722 irons [review HERE ] head to head.  I intended to start with the E722.  After my very first swing, I stepped back and said, “Wow, that’s incredibly solid…did I grab the wrong club?”  I flipped the club over, and it was indeed the E722 in my hand.  I hit another ball.  And then another.  It was no fluke: this is the most solid-feeling GI iron in recent memory .  TEE’s Dual Vibrcor technology does an amazing job with the sound and feel.

Speaking of sound, the partner to that solid feel is a quiet “thud” in the short irons that gets a little louder and snappier in the long irons.  The whole set is quiet, but it does get progressively louder as the irons get longer.

Feedback through the hands is subtle .  Outside of the big misses, you’ll need to pay attention to locate the exact impact location.  Similarly, mishits are slightly louder than pure strikes, but the difference is not stark.

Performance

Tour Edge Exotics is a company that I frequently tell people to stop sleeping on.  For several years, they’ve been putting out full lines of clubs that are absolutely the equal of any other OEM.  And yet, when it came time to test the E722 irons, I was the one napping on my own review of their predecessor, the E721 [read it HERE ].  But that did give me a chance to be impressed all over again with the E722.

One of the first things you’ll notice when comparing the specs of the C722 and E722 irons is that the E722 are roughly two degrees stronger throughout the set.  You would not know this from the launch monitor testing.  The E722 irons do launch and spin slightly lower than the C722, but the difference is far less than you’d expect.  The E722 is able to negate the strong lofts with a 360 undercut design that adds ball speed and increases launch angle.  This is a big iron with strong lofts, but it still launches towering shots that can stop on a dime .

tour edge e722 5 iron

Where you do see the effect of the “power lofted setup” is in the ball speed.  The lofts combine with Diamond Face VFT to create smash factors that look like they belong to a driver .  When you combine those high ball speeds with high launch, you get shots that carry forever.

But I’ve saved the best for last.  While all those traits are impressive, what I love most about the E722 irons is the forgiveness .  I was testing the E722 head to head against the C722 and my gamer Blueprints.  This gave me the chance to observe that the E722 is longer out of the heel than the Blueprints are from the center of the face.  You can almost hosel the ball and still send it flying.  If your ball striking is erratic, these irons are a dream.

tour edge e722 5 iron

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons give you a lot to love.  You can love their distance, their forgiveness, or their ability to be long and hold a green.  Get fit for the right shaft and set composition and you can love it all.  Just be warned that your opponents won’t feel the same.

Would you say these are a noticeable step up from the E721s?

' src=

From one generation to the next, the change is rarely huge. The 722 might fit a player better than the 721, but for most the differences should be fairly modest.

' src=

How did it do on thin misses vs. other game improvement irons?

The E722 does a great job with thin strikes.

' src=

would ther be much of an advantage to go with the e 722 over my old mizuno jpx irons that i still love but have lost a little distance with

My advice would be to test your irons against the E722 in a fitting to see if it’s worth changing.

' src=

How do I get “fitted” for these if only available online? Hard to buy a set you never tried….

Tour Edge is available at every major golf retailer and Club Champion.

' src=

I recently purchased a set of E722 with Ventus blue shafts . Definitely more distance and more forgiveness than my old set of Mizuno Jpx 825’s. As i am now 71 the Tour Edge Irons are definitely a game changer. Highly recommended. Everything in the review, i experienced. Good job. Read and enjoy every one of your reviews.

' src=

Are they forged irons. I need irons about 4 degrees flat.

They are not forged.

' src=

Definitely would check out Tour Edge irons, the performance & price fit me just fine. One note though, I’ve started to ignore the “number” on the iron. As lofts continue to get stronger, in a few years will my bag contain 3 or 4 numbered irons & 3 Gap wedges? If so, they’ll need some new names since “Gap” wedge & “A (attack?)” wedge have already been used!

' src=

Hi Matt I need bit of advice please, I have an issue with catching the ground a lot before the ball, do you think in your opinion something with a more open face like these would be more suitable or would I need a more thinner head? Thank you.

There is an almost endless list of reasons for hitting the turf before the ball. The look of the club can contribute, but you also have to think about your swing and the way the shaft fits. My advice would be to get a fitting and experiment with a lot of things to see if you can fix it with equipment, or to take a lesson.

' src=

Matt, for a 15 HCP I am torn between the PXG 0311 XP Gen 3 ($129/club) and the XP Gen 4 ($179/club) Your advise for forgiveness, feel and value? Also, how does the Tour Edge E722 compare to the XP Gen 3 , for forgiveness, feel and value? I am currently playing Ping G5 irons.

My advice is always to get fit. Try them all and see what performs best. We have reviews of the PXG irons here: https://pluggedingolf.com/?s=pxg+0311+xp+irons

' src=

How do they compare to the Houdini line. I’m an 65yr old adaptive golfer and need accuracy and length.

Are you referring to the Hot Launch line with the Houdini Sole?

' src=

I need help on lofting irons. I have the tour edge 722 driver and 7 wood which I love. What about the irons. Right now have callaway max irons

When you say you need help lofting irons, are you having trouble hitting your irons too low? In any case, my advice is always to get a fitting. The only way to know you’re getting the right clubs is to try them yourself with the help of a good fitter.

' src=

I was fit into these irons in September, and after 6 weeks of playing them I couldn’t agree more with all of your glowing review comments! I’m playing them with KBS Max 80 stiff flex shafts, love the high launch/high angle of descent ball flight with great spin control. These irons feel solid with good feedback at impact, and the forgiveness is truly impressive as my mishits are still hitting greens.

Can’t thank you enough for your review. My club fitter had me hit everything but Tour Edge, and I only asked for Tour Edge because of your great review! Not sure how they did it with such strong lofts but Tour Edge has made a believer out of me!

That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing this with us. I also want to give you a big round of applause for taking control of your fitting. Too many golfers are afraid to ask questions or ask to try specific things. You did and were rewarded with an amazing fit. Kudos!

' src=

I bought a set of the E722’s two months ago, and they have been phenomenal for me. I have 5-AW with the KBS A flex shafts. I was centering these right out of the box, and my on course distance is even longer than it was in the store. These have been a game changer for me, as my handicap is dropping steadily now with them in my bag. I couldn’t be more happy with them.

' src=

I’m confused on the differences between the C&E 722’s and the C&E 522’s one is competitive in one is extreme.

The 522 is from Tour Edge’s Hot Launch line. The 722 is from the Exotics family. The former is more budget and beginner friendly, the latter more high performance.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons Review

Introduction.

Welcome, fellow golfers, to the fairway of my review for the 2024 Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons . These clubs have been generating serious buzz amongst amateur enthusiasts, boasting promises of explosive distance and game-changing forgiveness. But do they live up to the hype? I, your friendly neighborhood golf guru, have spent the past few months pounding these beauties on the range and the course, and I’m here to dish all the dirt (or should I say divots?).

Table of Contents

Model Breakdown

Tour Edge Exotics actually offers two distinct models but today, we are reviewing the E722 family.

  • E722: This is the flagship model, designed for mid-to-high handicappers seeking maximum distance and forgiveness. Think golfers who want to launch towering shots and land them softly on the green, even on less-than-perfect swings.

The E722 irons are packed with cutting-edge technology aimed at boosting your long game and saving your bacon on mishits. Here are some key highlights:

  • Diamond Face VFT: This variable face thickness technology optimizes every point on the clubface for explosive energy transfer, resulting in higher ball speeds and impressive distance gains, even on off-center strikes.
  • 360° Undercut Pocket: This innovative feature expands the sweet spot by providing additional flex at impact, further enhancing ball speed and forgiveness.
  • VIBRCOR™ Damping: This proprietary material injected into the undercut pocket absorbs unwanted vibrations, providing a soft, yet responsive feel at impact.
  • Progressive CG Design: The center of gravity is strategically positioned in each iron to optimize launch angle and distance control throughout the set.
  • Elevate MPH 95 Shafts: Tour Edge’s own premium graphite shafts offer a smooth, powerful feel for golfers of all swing speeds.
  • Lofts: 4° stronger than traditional irons (e.g., 7-iron loft of 26°)
  • Lies: Standard
  • Lengths: Standard
  • Grips: Tour Edge Exotics V2 Tour Velvet

Pros & Cons

  • Explosive Distance: These irons truly pack a punch. The combination of Diamond Face VFT and the 360° Undercut Pocket generates serious ball speed, leading to longer, more effortless shots.
  • Unmatched Forgiveness: Even if you don’t catch the sweet spot perfectly, the E722s will keep your shots on track. The large sweet spot and VIBRCOR™ damping ensure consistent performance even on mishits.
  • Soft, Responsive Feel: Despite the distance-focused design, the E722 irons deliver a surprisingly soft and satisfying feel at impact. The VIBRCOR™ technology effectively dampens harsh vibrations, resulting in a pleasant feedback loop.
  • High Launch, Soft Landings: These irons launch the ball beautifully, providing plenty of airtime and ample opportunities to stop the ball on the green.
  • Sleek Aesthetics: The matte black finish with copper accents gives the E722s a modern, premium look that’s sure to turn heads.
  • Strong Lofts: The loft adjustments on the E722 are limited, which might not appeal to golfers who prefer precise trajectory control.
  • Price Tag: Compared to some mainstream brands, the E722s come at a slightly higher price point. However, the performance and technology justify the investment for serious golfers seeking top-notch results.

Player/User Testimonials

“These irons are game-changers! I’ve added at least 15 yards to my irons, and my consistency has improved dramatically.” – John M., 12 handicap “The feel is amazing! I love the soft feedback and the confidence it gives me to swing hard.” – Sarah L., 18 handicap “The forgiveness is unreal. I can mishit these irons all day long and still see decent results.” – Mark D., 10 handicap “They look as good as they perform! The sleek design is definitely an eye-catcher.” – Lisa P., 9 handicap “These are the irons I’ve been waiting for! Distance, forgiveness, and feel – what more could you ask

The 2024 Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are a true force to be reckoned with. Packing explosive distance, game-changing forgiveness, and a surprisingly soft feel, they cater perfectly to mid-to-high handicappers looking to shave strokes and boost their confidence on the course. While their strong lofts and slightly higher price tag might not suit everyone, for those seeking an unfair advantage on the fairway, the E722s are a game-changer worth every penny. So, if you’re tired of watching your buddies bomb it past you and desperate to land those elusive greenside approaches, give the E722s a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.

Bonus Verdict:

  • For distance hungry golfers: Buy, buy, buy!
  • For feel-focused players: Consider the C722 model or get custom fitting.
  • For high handicappers: These are your new best friends.

Remember, the path to lower scores starts with the right tools. The E722s might just be the secret weapon you need to unlock your inner golf beast. Now get out there and crush it!

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons Review

Tour edge exotics e722 irons.

With two irons to choose from in Tour Edge’s premium lineup, the Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are the option designed for high launch, forgiveness, and extreme distance. Technologies such as Diamond Face VFT and Dual Vibrcor, amongst others, make the E722 iron an amateur-friendly and tremendously forgiving iron for a wide range of players. If long and straight are what you’re looking for, definitely read the rest of this review.

Looks 7

As an extreme game improvement (GI) iron, there are certain characteristics one should expect in the Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons’ appearance. First, there is a noticeable offset which has a very purposeful function. This helps players close the club face at impact to avoid a big slice. For players that this club is geared toward, this will go a long way in keeping shots on target, and more importantly…in play. The E722 also has a thicker top line. This accommodates the 360º undercut design and Dual Vibrcor material in the head. More on that later. Generally speaking, the E722 has an ultra clean, GI iron profile .

Feel 6

How Does it Feel?

Diamond Face VFT is a technology Tour Edge uses to make the face of the club  more active and the sweet spot more generous. This is achieved by placing a pattern of diamond shapes behind the face, each varying in size. The “VFT” in the name stands for “Variable Face Thickness”. Those diamonds act as mini trampolines so there’s more spring to the face at impact. That concept also makes the sweet spot larger so you don’t have to be in the dead center of the face for maximum distance . As such, you can really feel the ball jump off of the E722 irons’ face and there’s more than a little wiggle room from the center.

Tour Edge also extended the sweet spot of the club by adding more weight at the toe. This pulls mass away from the heel/hosel and places more weight in the toe are from sole to top line. By placing more weight here, not only is the iron more generous, but it’s also more balanced and feels easier to keep square through impact.

In order to give the E722 irons more feedback, Tour Edge dampens the feel with their Dual Vibrcor material. This material is a TPU that fills the 360º undercut pocket. Without this material, the E722 irons would feel (and sound) more like a hollow metalwood. Instead, the E722 irons have an extremely clean and active feel that provides precise feedback so you know exactly where you hit the ball on the face.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons 9

How Does it Sound?

The combination of the 360º undercut design and Dual Vibrcor play a large role in the Tour Edge E722 irons’ sound. Like I mentioned above, without Vibrcor, the E722 would feel like a metalwood. The sound would be pretty metallic and “tingy” as well. BUT, the Dual Vibrcor dampens up the sound to give a lively “whap” . Don’t get me wrong, it’s not going to sound like a razor thin forged blade, but it’s tight and appropriate for a GI iron.

Since the E722 is a club geared toward extreme game improvement, it has a slightly thicker sole. It’s not too meaty whatsoever, but it’s in line with a club of this category. There’s a slight bevel to the leading and trailing edges which allows for the club to cut through the turf a bit smoother. The end result is moderate “thump” with a hint of “sweep” on most swings unless you’re chopping down trees.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons 10

On-Course Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons are designed to get up in the air and go a long way, and boy, do they sure do that. With a low center of gravity (CG), the ball naturally wants to get up in the air faster. While that’s really helpful in this category of golf club, you still want to avoid ballooning. Tour Edge helps with this through “power lofting” the set. This means each club has a slightly stronger loft than it might normally, but will essentially be easier to hit. In short, the 7 iron might have a 5.5-6 iron loft, but will still play as easy as a 7 iron normally would. Of course, the generous forgiveness built into these clubs will make the long irons easier to hit than your typical irons.

Back to that 360º undercut design I keep bringing up. As noted above, this acts sort of like a hinge at contact creating more face flex. More face flex means more speed. More speed equals longer distance. Put that together with Diamond Face VFT and the ball really goes. While I’m certainly not who this club is geared toward, I was seeing significant distance increase from club to club . For instance, I was hitting the 6 iron around 220 yards consistently. I don’t hit 6 irons that far… Where this really stands out is on mishits. These undeserving shots had much less punishment than I’m used to and still managed to get up and go pretty well.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons 13

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons

If you’re looking for really easy distance and a ton of forgiveness in a premium package, the Tour Edge E722 irons certainly deliver. A lot of tried and true technology went into these clubs and the end result is impressive. I was a big fan of the “competitive-spec” C722 irons , but I genuinely think the E722 is the real star in this part of the family. The E722 irons legitimately excel in every category for this corner of the market and are a great value when compared to its competitors.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Iron Review

Tour Edge clubs tend to offer great value for money - these irons are no exception. Quality comes shining through in the E722. For higher handicappers seeking something beyond a starter set, these irons make a no-brainer purchase.

Scott Kramer

This large muscle cavity back appears to be for mid-to-high handicappers, due to its thick top line and noticeable offset. It also has a higher launch profile and expanded sweet spot than its sister C722 iron. Thus, the company calls it an extreme distance and forgiveness game-improvement iron that’s loaded with technology. Much like the Tour Edge Exotics E722 drive r, this is the more forgiving iron in the Exotics range.

That starts with Vibrcor, a high-grade TPU that’s strategically placed in the deep 360-degree undercut pocket to induce ball speed, enhance feel, dampen sound and shock, and create perimeter weighting around the entire clubhead for maximum forgiveness and power. Simultaneously, Diamond Face VFT (variable face thickness) technology spans the clubface, meaning 103 different diamond shapes behind the face function as mini trampolines to create faster ball speeds and expand the sweet spot all the way to the edges.

We deliberately tested this by making impact on the heel, toe, low and high – and can confirm shots still seemed to travel close to where intended on the misses without any severe consequences. The heads also sport dual toe weighting high on the toe in the rear and in a toe weighting pocket. That elongates the sweet spot to raise MOI and position CG directly behind the center face.

Finally, the heads are lofted strongly – making for a long-distance design that gives you the length but with the same apex height you expect from any given iron. We tried the irons only with steel shafts, and found the feel and performance to be competitive. Ball flight was generally as you would expect with steel – nice and straight. The standard grips – made by Lamkin – also felt nice in the hands. And consistency was also pleasant – with no fliers or ballooned shots during our testing. For what it’s worth, we thought the shorter irons carried the ball very well and performed slightly better for their respective lofts than the longer ones. But we’d be perfectly happy playing the entire set.

As we’ve often said about Tour Edge, you get quality clubs with outstanding value. These irons are no exception. Exotics is the brand’s top-line model and this comes shining through in the quality of the E722. For higher handicappers seeking something beyond a starter set, these irons make a no-brainer purchase.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 Irons – Key Takeaways

  • Tour Edge launches updated Exotics irons.
  • C for “Compact,” E for “Extreme distance and forgiveness”
  • Launch includes new, compact C722 Ti-Utility irons
  • Pre-sale starts tomorrow. In stores March 5.

The new Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons are once again asking you a question you may or may not have the answer to. And it’s a question Tour Edge has been posing for over a year so we have a question of our own:

Are you any closer to figuring out whether you’re an E or a C?

Or maybe you’re not a letter at all.

As far as existential questions go, it’s not up there with “to be, or not to be.” But if you’re trying to figure out which of the new Tour Edge Exotics irons might work best for you, it will be good to know your graphemes from your phonemes.

So let’s dive into the E722 and C722 irons. We’ll dot some i’s and cross some t’s for you so you’ll be able to mind your p’s and q’s and figure out this E or C question ASAP.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons

EC Was Here

Even before Young Tom Morris was a gleam in Old Tom Morris’s eye, golf has had its own symbols, acronyms and lexicon. In this case, translating Tour Edge Exotics into plain English is simple. E is for Extreme Distance/Forgiveness, while C is for Compact.

Tour Edge started the concept in 2020 with its Hot Launch E521 and C521 product line. The new Tour Edge E722 and C722 irons follow the same idea but comparing Exotics to Hot Launch is like comparing community theater to Broadway. It’s all relative and they’re intended for a completely different audience.

The Tour Edge E722 and C722 irons share much of the same technology and DNA but separate target golfers. The E722 is a classic game-improvement iron, right down to its loft structure and low center of gravity. The C722 is a player’s distance iron with lofts and technology comparable to others in the category.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons

And both are priced aggressively enough to, at the very least, make you consider putting them on your demo list this spring.

Tour Edge C722 Irons

When Tour Edge says C is for Compact, it’s not kidding. The C722 is considerably smaller than the E722. In fact, it’s also noticeably smaller than its predecessor, the C721, by a good 15 percent according to Tour Edge. You’ll also notice a thinner topline and shorter blade length. But, other than size, it doesn’t appear much else has changed.

The C722 technology checklist is very similar to last year’s C721 checklist. Both feature Dual VIBRCOR™ technology as well as Tour Edge’s signature Diamond Face VFT™.

As with other player’s distance irons, the Tour Edge C722 features hollow-body construction. That allows for maximum face deflection and, ultimately, ball speed. There’s one problem: hollow-body irons often sound and feel like crap. That’s why we have medicated goo such as SpeedFoam, Urethane Microspheres and Dual VIBRCOR™. The idea is to dampen vibration while improving sound and feel.

There’s always a tradeoff, though. Medicated goo certainly improves sound and feel but it can also limit face deflection, which limits ball speed.

And maximum face deflection—and its resulting ball speed—is the whole point behind hollow-body construction.

According to Tour Edge, VIBRCOR™ is a performance gel that’s injected into the hollow body. That gel works in conjunction with a thin, light TPU layer to, according to Tour Edge, “dampen sound and shock and to produce faster ball speed at impact.”

Dampen sound and shock? Check. Produce faster ball speed? We’re going to have to see about that. Logic says the best we can hope for is for VIBRCOR™ to be ball speed neutral.

Diamonds Are Forever

As mentioned, the new C722 irons feature another signature Tour Edge technology: Full Face Diamond Face VFT™. Diamond Face started with Tour Edge metalwoods but has expanded into irons. Every OEM has some form of Variable Face Thickness (VFT) in its arsenal. The goal is to preserve ball speed on off-center strikes.

To achieve this, Tour Edge uses a series of diamond-shaped patterns of varying thickness across the back of the entire face. In total, the C722 features 92 different diamonds to act as mini-trampolines. The result, says Tour Edge, is an expanded sweet area.

The C722’s hollow-body design also allows for more perimeter weighting and a deeper CG. When combined with the thin Diamond Face and the C722’s overall compact and thin-soled profile, it has the potential to be a fairly forgiving player’s distance iron. Most Wanted Testing, of course, will see if that’s the case.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons

The Diamond Face itself is forged from what Tour Edge is calling high-strength military-grade maraging steel. It’s another carryover technology from last year’s C721 and is used for landing gear, helicopter undercarriages and rocket motor cases. Why it matters is its high strength-to-weight ratio, which means Tour Edge can make a pretty thin face.

And pretty thin faces flex.

Tour Edge E722 Irons

Tour Edge is feeling pretty cocky about the new E722 irons . In its press release, it says while it has revamped the C722 iron , it has perfected the E722.

Hey, if you’re going to be extreme, be extreme.

The E721 was a top-half performer in last year’s Most Wanted Game Improvement irons testing , finishing sixth overall. It also had some giddy-up, finishing a close second in long-iron distance and in a virtual tie for second in mid-iron distance.

tour edge e722 5 iron

Tour Edge promises similar distance for E722 and is refreshingly frank about how it’s going to get there:

“… through stronger lofts from iron to iron.”

Yep, that’s direct from the press release.

But before Torch and Pitchfork Nation gets its undies in a wad, you do have to give Tour Edge points for candor. Sure, the lofts are strong but they’re also right in line with pretty much everyone else in the game-improvement category. And the lofts, based on a 27.5-degree 7-iron, are identical to last year’s E721 irons.

Tour Edge says the E722 irons are “Power Lofted,” thanks to a lower and deeper CG . That, according to Tour Edge, creates lower spin rates while hitting the same launch window and peak height.

tour edge e722 5 iron

Undercuts and More Diamonds

As mentioned, the E722 and C722 irons share plenty of DNA. You’ll find VIBRCOR™ in the E722s, along with Full Face Diamond Face VFT™. Since they’re game-improvement irons, the E722 has much larger heads and, ergo, much larger faces. That means Tour Edge can cram 103 diamond-shaped mini-trampolines into the E722.

As far as we can tell, the E722 face is made from regular old “civilian-grade” maraging steel.

The face and sole feature a 360-degree undercut design. It’s a one-piece body that keeps CG low and deep and allows the face to flex. That pocket is filled with VIBRCOR™ (visible through the “V” in the back) and there’s more of it placed right behind the face to help with both sound and feel.

tour edge e722 5 iron

Tour Edge is also adding weight towards the toe to add more mass to the perimeter for MOI and shift the CG more towards the center, right behind the point of impact.  The result is added forgiveness and an elongated sweet area.

Tour Edge C722 Ti-Utility Iron

In the world of existential golf, if you are in fact a “C” player who doesn’t particularly like “C” hybrids, fear not. Tour Edge sees you and has a C-lution : the C722 Ti-Utility iron .

The design is boiler-plate utility iron, with a titanium twist. The C722 Ti-Utility features, as the name suggests, a Beta Titanium L-Cup Face. It wraps around the leading edge, as cup faces do, and acts as a hinge to optimize face flex and ball speed. To connect the beta titanium cup face to the 431 stainless steel body, Tour Edge goes back to an old friend: Combo-Brazing.

tour edge e722 5 iron

Tour Edge has used Combo-Brazing (or vacuum brazing, as it’s known in other industries) as far back as 2004 with its Exotics Combo-Brazing fairway wood. In fact, the “CB” in its recent metalwoods stands for Combo-Brazing. It’s a unique flux-less method of joining dissimilar metals using silver-based chemicals and a vacuum heater. It creates a strong bond and is used to make aircraft parts, heat exchangers and pressure vessels, along with industrial drilling and cutting tools.

Tour Edge calls Combo-Brazing a distance-boosting process but you have to connect a few dots to get there.

The benefit is that Combo-Brazing joins dissimilar metals without welding. Welds are heavy. Without welding, that weight gets repositioned for a lower and deeper CG. That means you can get the ball up in the air, even with strong-lofted utility irons. Add to that a fitter-adjustable 10-gram weight in the back and that thin Beta Titanium L-Cup Face and you get—drumroll please—boosted distance.

tour edge e722 5 iron

C and E Final Thoughts

If you compare both 722 irons to their 721 predecessors, there’s really no new technology to shout about. The big news is the C722 has been made 15 percent smaller while maintaining, we presume, the same playability of the C721. As Tour Edge tends to make some of the most playable irons for the money, that’s a good thing.

As far as “perfecting” the E722 goes, the technology checklist provided by Tour Edge ticks off the same boxes as the E721. We won’t be able to provide a definitive analysis until we get them under the Most Wanted microscope.

tour edge e722 5 iron

That said, the E721 was, for the money, a pretty solid game-improvement iron. And even with its metalwoods pricing creeping up, Tour Edge’s claim as being the pound-for-pound industry leader in performance and innovation does hold up under scrutiny. The question is, will Tour Edge show up on your radar when it comes time to demo new irons?

In other words, to demo or not to demo?

That, friends, is the real existential question.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 Irons: Price and Availability

Tour Edge is taking a unique approach to stock shafts, called SpeedTest. The company tests shafts with its robot to pair the best-performing options for different swing speeds and then validates those selections through player testing. None of this means you shouldn’t get a custom fitting but it does whittle down the options.

The E722 stock offering includes the KBS TGI Tour Graphite shaft for 85 mph swing speeds or lower (50-gram L-flex, 60-gram A-flex). The KBS TGI 70 and True Temper XP85 fit 85 to 95 mph swing speeds while 95 and up options include the KBS TGI 80, Fujikura Venus Blue 8 or True Temper Elevate 95.

tour edge e722 5 iron

The E722 irons are a relative bargain. They’ll retail for $114.99 each in graphite ($799.99 for a seven-piece set) and $99.99 in steel ($699.99 for a seven-piece set).

The C722 stock shafts are the same as the E722. They’ll run $144.99 per stick in graphite ($999.99 for a seven-piece set) and $129.99 each in steel ($899.99). They’ll be available in right-handed only.

The C722 Ti-Utility iron comes in four lofts (17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees). Shaft options include the Fujikura Ventus Blue 6-A flex (85 mph and below); the Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW Blue and Ventus Blue 7 in R-flex (85-95 mph); the Tensei RAW Blue and RAW White, plus the Ventus Blue 8 in S-flex (95-105), and the Tense RAW Blue and RAW White in X-flex (105 and up).

They’re also right-handed only and will retail for $199.99.

The Lamkin Crossline 360 Gray is the stock grip throughout the 722 lineup.

Presale starts tomorrow. The line will hit retail March 5.

Haha, regular old “civilian grade” maraging steel is probably good enough for a 20 like me.

The woods are just to mechanical looking, The irons are a copy of Wilson C300 irons ,not impressed!!!!!!!!

Nice looking CAN YOU SAY WILSON C300 irons

David Donovan

I bought the E721 irons after demoing them! They were more than 1 club longer than the T200’s I was struggling with. I do get some funny looks after hitting a 190 yard 7 iron! I could not be happier with these irons! Not sure what the 722’s would do for me but I think I will stick with these for the time being!

Paul Infanti

They may have a good club, but I was immediately put off by the look of the C722. This may be a bit harsh, but to me, they come off looking like cheap knock offs. When the demo day come up for them, I will give them a look because the pictures sometimes don’t do the club justice. I hope they perform better than they look.

A bit off the subject but does anyone really buy on the “pre-sale”? Before holding and testing clubs?

Their lack of lefty products sucks…..

Shawn Mahoney

Looking forward to trying these I have an Exotics driver and two hybrids in the bag and love their performance.

Tour Edge needs to do something else with that logo, the irons look decent until they slap that logo on there….

Totally agree. Up through the CBX 119 line they were much better when the emphasis was on Exotics. Then they decided to slap the whole thing on there in box set font.

Liked the product but the higher irons, 8 on up were solid unlike the lower ones which I tested and liked. So I backed out. Still have and enjoy the 7 iron demo bought for $60 , Ended up with Ping instead. .to replace 9 year old I20s.

Tour Edge C722 and E722 irons: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/FirstCut_TourEdgeIrons.jpg

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Tour Edge’s latest iron line appeals to different types of players. The C722 is for a more accomplished player and uses a hollow-body design and L-face to create speed while the E722 offers more help getting the ball in the air for those who need it.

AVAILABILITY/PRICE: Available March 5, the cost for the C722 irons is $141 per iron in steel and $161 per iron in graphite. The E722 is $111 per iron in steel and $126 per iron in graphite. The Ti-utility is vailable in right-hand only in lofts of 17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees and costs $200 per iron

THE DEEP DIVE: Tour Edge is a company that appeals to a wide swath of golfers and that heritage continues with the launch of its Exotics C722 and E722 irons with the former targeted at more of a competitive-minded player while the latter is aimed at the player in need of a little more help with their approach game.

Common to both is a variable-face thickness in which different-sized diamond shapes act as mini-trampolines to foster higher ball speeds across a wider portion of the face, including reduced thickness in the heel and toe areas to mitigate the loss of ball speed on off-center strikes. Both irons also feature a high-grade thermoplastic urethane the company calls VibRCore to help promote rebound while enhancing feel.

The Exotics E722 uses a single-piece high-strength stainless steel body with a 360-degree undercut design. That design helps lower the center of gravity to produce a high launch with increased face flex—something players in need of an assist will welcome. A new toe-weighting pocket moves plenty of weight out to that area to provide more stability and maintain more speed in an area where less-skilled players often strike their irons. Also adding to the distance equation are the stronger lofts with a pitching wedge that checks in at 42 degrees of loft.

The more competitive player will be looking at the Exotics C722, which has a shorter blade length, thinner topline and an overall more compact shape than the E722

MORE: The best clubfitters near you

The real hero of this iron is a L-face where the bottom of the face wraps around part of the sole to provide extra spring, particularly low on the face where most iron impacts occur. The face is made from a high-strength forged military-grade maraging steel used in aerospace, with applications including landing gear, helicopter undercarriages and rocket motor cases—all of which require a high strength-to-weight material. The face is plasma welded to the 17-4 stainless-steel body creating a hollow-body design where the face has room to flex.

“This type of face produces a very hot ball speed,” said Matt Neely, Tour Edge’s vice president of product development. “We didn’t have to go any thinner on the face as we were already up against the face thickness envelope, but the L-face design produce the kind of flex you need to achieve in a players-distance iron.”

A variety of shaft options are available in both steel and graphite. Cost for the C722 irons is $141 per iron in steel and $161 per iron in graphite. The E722 is $111 per iron in steel and $126 per iron in graphite.

For those seeking to replace their long irons with something a little easier to hit, the company also unveiled its C722 Ti-utility iron. The club features a more compact shape with a bit of offset. A titanium L-face is brazed to a 431 stainless-steel body. Doing so allows the face to be joined to the body without having to weld them together, thus saving weight. Th hollow-body design also allows plenty of room for the face to flex to enhance distance. An adjustable weight in the sole allows clubfitters to dial in the preferred weight. Available in right-hand only in lofts of 17, 19, 22 and 25 degrees, the Ti-utility costs $200 per iron.

Certified Pre-Owned Tour Edge Exotics E722 Irons

Description.

This ultra-premium extreme distance iron is loaded with tech, including Tour Edge’s revolutionary VIBRCOR™ technology and breakthrough Diamond Face VFT ™ technology that gives these irons incredible power and feel.

Dual VIBRCOR Technology - The Exotics E722 Iron consists of a high-grade TPU strategically placed in the deep 360-degree undercut pocket to create new speed-inducing and feel-enhancing technology called VIBRCOR. VIBRCOR performance gel is injected into the cavity to work in partnership with an extremely thin, yet light TPU layer to dampen sound and shock and to produce faster ball speed at impact.

Full-Face Diamond Face VFT Technology - The iron features a full-face Diamond Face VFT technology in which 103 different diamond shapes behind the face function as mini-trampolines to create faster ball speeds and expand the sweet spot to outer areas of the face so that the full face of the iron is covered.

360° Undercut Design - The design is a one-piece high-strength steel body with a 360-degree Undercut Design. It lowers the CG to produce a higher launch and increased face flexing, ball speed and overall distance across the entire face.

Extreme Toe Weighting - Extreme Toe Weighting achieved on the high toe in the rear portion of the club along with a new toe weighting pocket. This dual toe weighting elongates the sweet spot to achieve a higher MOI and strategic CG positioning right behind center face and further optimizes the sound and feel of the iron.

Power Lofted - A modern long-distance game improvement iron design that will provide extra distance with the same apex height expected from each iron. The lower and deeper CG allowed the E722 irons to be power-lofted to create distance and lower spin rates, while achieving the same launch characteristics as a standard lofted iron.

SpeedTested Shafts -  Every shaft in the Exotics 722 Series has been SpeedTested to find the optimal custom shaft pairing for every flex, determined by robotic testing, and validated by player testing.

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 irons feature dual vibrcor technology to create remarkable feel.
