Top Tips on the Louvre for Kids

Yes, exploring the Louvre with kids IS possible, despite the crowds, and yes, it can be good fun.

But there’s a caveat.

It’s a great day out, as long as you don’t plan on staying too long, or maxing out the kid’s patience in what is the world’s largest AND most visited museum .

Do reward your kid’s patience and good behaviour by breaking for a homemade croque monsieur.

This is France’s answer to grilled cheese.

Be sure to follow that with a sweet macaron or two at one of the local cafes or restaurants in Paris nearby.

A treat is always a good bribe!

If you are an art lover, we recommend returning without kids at some point too!

First up: The Best Time to Visit the Louvre with Kids?

Before we begin: Take advantage of the Louvre’s evening hours on Wednesdays and Fridays until 9:45 p.m and take the kids in the early evening  when the crowds are less boisterous.

This is our pick of the BEST TIME to visit the Louvre with kids.

The other best time to visit the Louvre with kids is midweek, early afternoon, when the late-eater crowds disperse for a belated lunch.

Or, you could try to be in line right at opening if you only have a couple of hours, and can be out before the crowds thicken around mid morning.

Mid-morning entrances to the Louvre museum are best avoided with kids if you want to give them a chance to get up close and personal with the Louvre paintings and Louvre statues.

Book a Louvre Family Tour

Our tip is book a Louvre kids tour, one with activities.

And go with the experts who know how to navigate around the crowds.

Our hot tip: This is our most popular recommendation: a family friendly tour of the Louvre with Get Your Guide.

On this tour above, kids see (and hear):

  • Venus de Milo and stories of Greek mythology
  • the much-adored Winged Victory of Samothrace
  • learn about a variety of the antique statues
  • the MONA LISA, along with stories about her intriguing smile and what it means

Plus, at the end of the guided tour, you are free to wander the Louvre museum until the kids have truly had enough!

Take a look at the full tour inclusions here.

Or, Book a Private Family Tour at the Louvre Museum

It’s also possible to book a private family tour , meaning you don’t have to worry about keeping up with the group, and can cut it short if the kids or toddlers get restless.

The guides who run these two-hour-long private Louvre tours for kids are very experienced with kids of ALL ages.

Guides have tricks up their sleeve (games, puzzles, quizzes) to make sure everyone is engaged and having fun as the whole family explores the history of art.

It’s definitely another good option if you want to visit the Louvre with kids.

Hot tip: Stop by the Aire de Jeux playground near the Louvre after your visit so the kids can run off steam!

Tip No.1: Find the Best Kid Friendly Louvre Exhibits

Visiting the Louvre with Kids?

Unless you are on a mission to how much is possible to see in the Louvre Museum Paris in one day, we recommend you stick with the Highlights of the Louvre if you have the kids in tow.

Take a look below for our Louvre tips and ideas.

Without doubt, the main reason most people plan on visiting the Louvre museum is to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

People from all walks of life, and every country in the world, come to Paris to catch a glimpse of the world famous painting.

Fun fact: Did you know that Henri Loyrette, former director of the Louvre, said that 80% of visitors go for the Mona Lisa & then LEAVE!

(Don’t do that.)

Mona Lisa is now housed behind bullet proof glass in its own climate-controlled room.

Venus de Milo Louvre

The Venus de Milo with her missing arms, along with the Mona Lisa and Michelangelo’s David, are arguably the most recognised pieces of art in the world.

The Venus de Milo sculpture is over 2,000 years old.

She is one of the most iconic representations of classical female beauty still in existence.

The Louvre Pyramid

The Louvre Pyramid was built in the 1980s as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum by Chinese American architect I.M. Pei, but not without controversy.

Nowadays, the modern glass structure has become a landmark in its own right, although it is MUCH smaller in real life than what we expected!

It’s surprisingly small in fact, and is also surrounded by three more unassuming tiny pyramids too!

Tip No.2: What to see at the Louvre in 2 Hours?

Check out the Louvre Floor Plan PDF before you go.

This gives you a good idea of what is where, so you can plan your entrance, and your Louvre route.

If the Mona Lisa is on your list, head straight to the Denon Wing, Level 1 for the Paintings/Italy exhibition.

If you are asking the question, “If I only have two hours to spend in the Louvre what should I see?”, here’s a little secret!

The Louvre has already mapped out a number of routes you can take.

On this tool, you can choose:

  • the time frame you have (eg 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, all day?)
  • your audience (eg family, children, adults only, disability?)

Where to stay in Paris near the Louvre?

We stayed at the Novotel Paris les Halles and we highly recommend it.

Read our review.

This Paris hotel is only a short 9 min walk to the Louvre, and there’s a very cool space-age playground about a minute away.

The Eiffel Tower is just 30 minutes from the hotel on the RER too.

(We booked a Skip the Line tour of the Eiffel Tower with Get your Guide, so when we got there the kids and I didn’t have to queue)

If you are visiting Paris with children, book a stay at the Novotel Paris les Halles.

The best way to visit the Louvre with kids!

Every family wants to visit the Louvre! It is the biggest museum in the world and the only place where you can see so many famous pieces of art while wandering through a more than 700 years old Palace built by Kings. It’s so huge and impressive that sometimes it can even be a little intimidating to some families.

Our Adventure in The Louvre tour was specifically designed to make visiting the Louvre fun and engaging for the whole family. This tour is a treasure hunt with challenges to do and clues to follow that will lead you from one chef-d'oeuvre to another. From Mona Lisa to the Venus de Milos and from Liberty Leading the People to Winged Victory you’ll see all of the greatest works of art in the Louvre and have fun doing it.

Our guides know how to capture and keep your kids attention as they truly enjoy sharing the Louvre with families! There are no dry facts or boring lectures on this tour. At every stop the information we share is interesting for the whole family. The tour itself usually lasts about 2.5hrs long depending on your ability to answer questions on the spot and figure out the clues to the next stop.

BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered SARL (Société à Responsabilité Limitée - Limited Liability Company) at the Paris Chamber of Commerce under the number : 534 151 576 BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered French Travel Operator under the licence : IM075160040 BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered Public Service Vehicle Operator under the Licence : 2016/11/0007784 Because BLUE FOX TRAVEL is a registered French company, and all of our tours take place in France, only the French Law will apply in the case of any conflict. Last updated : January 2019. Valid until : the end of the world.

I - Cancellation Policy

BFT offers a 100% refund if a reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tour. The notification must be made by email. No refunds are given for ANY reason once within the 24 hrs prior to the scheduled tour. All of our tours run Rain or Shine. We do not issue refunds if you choose to skip your tour because the weather doesn’t suit you. You can always wait until the last minute to book your tour to ensure the weather suits you that day. BFT reserves the right to cancel any of its tours last minute in case of an Act of God or crazy act from a large group of people. Flooding, hail, dangerous weather conditions, riots, etc. In such instances full refunds will be given to anyone who had their tour cancelled.

II - Satisfaction Guarantee Policy

If the tour you took with us didn’t live up to what we promised you on our website and failed to meet your expectations, we will be heartbroken. We will also give you a 100% refund so long as you do all of these things: You remember that we we are in no way responsible for the weather and that our guides actually have to give 110% of themselves to you on days when the weather is not as nice in order to help you enjoy the tour. You participate in the entire tour from: being on time at the meeting point until the “goodbyes” at the very end of the tour. You can’t leave a tour half-way and ask for your money back. At the end of the tour you tell your guide, in person, that you were not satisfied with the tour you took. You provide your tour guide with the reasons you were not satisfied with the tour itself.

III - Payment Policy

A valid credit card is required to secure your booking. All reservations must be prepaid online prior to the tour. We accept Visa, Mastercard. None of your personal credit card or billing information is stored by BFT.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

Milestones:

You’ve probably heard a million times that the Louvre is huge. It is the second largest museum in the world (after the Hermitage in St. Petersburg). To visit the whole museum, you would need 4 whole days and not spend more than 10 seconds in front of each work of art! Okay, okay. But is that going to sell it to your children? They are so small and the museum is so gigantic! The Louvre can be a fabulous place for children when you hold the key to their curiosity! That’s why we have planned a very creative and fun Louvre for Kids tour to engage them.

Thanks to our kid-friendly art experts , your family will be able to admire the most famous pieces of art: Venus of Milo, Victory of Samothrace and of course Mona Lisa are among our itinerary.

At first, your guide will give your kids an activity booklet, tailor-made by age range (from 3 to 6 or 7 to 12 years old). They will follow the same course, but with adapted challenges. Actors of their tour, they will see and discuss works of art in a relaxed atmosphere ‑ with drawing or coloring activities for the younger ones.

A Louvre for Kids tour designed to be fun and informative at the same time!

In every step of their progress in solving the enigma, their observational skills will help them advance! With each answer, they will win a clue written on a card . Once the whole set of cards has been collected, all the clues put together will lead them to solve the puzzle !

But this Louvre for Kids tour is not only focused on your children! Everyone in your family will see the main masterpieces of the museum and will learn a ton from your “Mary Poppins” guide’s knowledge. We guarantee a great recipe for a successful family experience!

And if you have already visited the Louvre Museum, check out our Orsay Kids tour if you’re looking for other awesome activities in Paris made for kids and families!

Important Remark: The Louvre is closed every Tuesday and therefore this tour cannot be booked on that day.

From what age is this Louvre for Kids tour interesting for children?

Your dear children should be at least 3 years old for the best experience. But your whole family is welcome and as it is a private activity, we can totally adapt this Louvre for Kids tour!

Is there any interest for teens and adults in this tour?

May i keep my stroller as we have a baby/toddler.

As long as it is not a jogging stroller, you can bring your stroller, and can even borrow one at the Louvre if you don’t have yours with you.

Can we still do this Louvre kids tour if we have more than 6 people?

Just advise our superhero squad in your request form about the number of people in your party, as well as their category (adult or child), so we’ll be able to tell you about the extra fee per additional person to book this Louvre treasure hunt.

What if we have more than 6 people?? Or we want to customize our trip?? Oh no! Just kidding, no problem is too big for us!  Leave us a message on our contact page , and a member of our superhero team will work some magic to make your dreams come true!

Louvre Quest: For Families with Teens - Paris Muse Tour of Paris

Tour Description

This Louvre tour is a series of quests—for power, immortality, movement and love. You’ll explore four great civilizations (Ancient Near East, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Modern Europe) and discover the driving forces behind their imposing palaces, secret tombs, and enduring symbols. We’ll approach them not like museum artifacts, but as living evidence of universal human adventures. Along the way, you’ll meet mighty kings, crafty goddesses, and mysterious soothsayers, each with their own captivating stories to tell.

Quest is an entirely new way to experience the Louvre. It is an interactive game designed to test your mettle and sharpen your skills. In each civilization, you’ll take on a series of challenges, introduced by an archetypal character from that era. Each challenge must be completed before you can move on to the next stage of your quest. As players progress, they earn a series of cards, featuring masterworks examined in depth on your tour. As in any great heroic adventure, you’ll rely on the wisdom and experience of a mentor: your personal Paris Muse educator, who will guide you on each stage of your journey.

Reserve today, and become the hero of your own quest for adventure at the Louvre.

Your guide will bring your timed and dated tickets, and your family will use a priority access line to enter the museum.  There will be a wait for the required security screening, however.

Our cancellation and change policies are  here .

Tour Teaser: Why is Mona Lisa such a  celebrity ?

Accessibility

Our guides are trained to lead wheelchair-accessible tours that use the Louvre’s many ramps and elevators.

We can assist you in borrowing a free wheelchair on site, with your ID. We recommend this to visitors with limited mobility, since navigating the Louvre can be physically demanding. Please specify your mobility needs when booking online.

Children in strollers are welcome at the Louvre. Strollers larger than 55cm x 35cm x 20cm when folded cannot be checked during your visit. Frontal baby carriers and slings are allowed, but back carriers with metal frames are not.

Tour Highlights

Hey mum— Louvre Quest was Just the Best

Usually when I take my kids to a museum after a short while the whines emerge – “Can we go now? This is boring.” The Paris Muse Louvre Quest had my kids racing the halls. With bite sized chunks and a storyline to rival a Hollywood movie, the littles were constantly intrigued. From Egyptian kings and the deception of their arch enemies to tales of jealousy with the most beautiful girl in the world, this tour gives museum visits a complete makeover.

Kristina Foster Sydney, Australia

Quest Guide was Wonderful

Louvre Quest was recommended to us by a friend, and we certainly strongly recommend it as well. Communication from the office was excellent and when I asked for a wheelchair, they were quick to reply with “no problem.” Our tour guide Mallory was wonderful and the tour was excellent thanks to her guidance and good humour. She went above and beyond to make our Louvre experience one we will never forget. If we ever get back to the Louvre (and I hope we do), we will definitely use Paris Muses services again.

Maggie Reeves Orinda, Californ

Immediately Engaged by Quest

Our Louvre Quest tour was the highlight of our family trip to Paris! We wanted to be sure our two teenagers had a positive experience visiting the museum so we thought we would take advantage of an expert guide who caters to this age group. Laura was that and so much more! Both our son & daughter were immediately engaged in the tour and were captivated by the interactive Quest challenges. The educational materials and souvenir cards were top-notch and made for lasting keepsakes. Laura really made the museum come to life for both the kids as well as Mom & Dad! We spoke of both Laura and the tour highlights though out the remainder of our trip. THANK YOU Paris Muse!

Description

  • Reviews (15)

Many parents would love to bring their children to the Louvre, but are not sure that they would appreciate it. Sometimes museums tours seem too boring and art history is probably not the most passionate subject for children. However, this museum tour will be an entertaining adventure full of quizzes to be solved. Both children and adults can participate in this game while discovering some of the greatest masterpieces in the Louvre: Ancient Greek and Roman art, Ancient Egyptian civilization, the Italian Renaissance and, of course, the famous “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci. As a result, during this tour, both children and their parents will have fun. Believe it or not, adults are often just as passionate about the game as their children.

William Mcgrath – July 16, 2023

Oxana is the best museum guide we have ever had. She is informative and thoughtfully efficient. She manages a visit to the Louvre very well–she covers all of the major sites in depth without appearing to rush. Oxana is always our go-to guide when we bring relatives and friends to Paris.

Marina Gupta – July 7, 2023

Oxana was full of interesting historical stories , we really enjoyed the tour , our teenagers learned a lot in the Louvre ! I would recommend Oxana with pleasure

Katita Palamar – July 2, 2023

Oxana was a great guide for our kids in the Louvre (ages 10, 12, 12). We were tired but she kept them engaged with her quizzes. We saw the “highlights” and learned about the history of the building and about the ancient Greeks and Romans. I definitely recommend for a family tour, particularly with younger children.

Michelle Mohammad – June 24, 2023

Oxana was wonderful, very informative, was able to answer all our questions and was very warmand welcoming.

Daniel Nadolny – April 6, 2023

Oxana was wonderful and knowledgeable! She kept things interesting and engaging for our 6 year-old and was a wealth of knowledge for any questions we had. Highly skilled and highly recommended.

MELIDA PEREZ – December 28, 2022

Oxana was super fast with communications which put me at ease. She was on time and made our trip to the Louvre so much more enjoyable.

VICTORIA BLANSHTEYN – December 26, 2022

The Louvre could be daunting. Oxana has a vast knowledge and makes it fun and educational for kids.

JEFF BRUNELLE – July 6, 2022

The Louvre can be daunting, especially with young kids in tow. Oxana makes it manageable and fun, and clearly has vast knowledge of the relevant history. She communicates very well with kids.

NATALIE LONTCHAR – July 3, 2022

So hard to condense all that is in the Louvre to 2 hours but Oxana did an amazing job of giving us the highlights! Our two tweens had not been before and wanted to keep them interested and that definitely worked. They have been talking about what they saw that day and really enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend using her for a tour particularly if you have kids. It is just the right amount of time. She really was great.

KRISTINE JARVI – April 14, 2022

Oxana provided our family with an excellent tour of the Lourve. The tour was age appropriate (children aged 8 to 15) and engaged us all. We very much enjoyed the tour.

WILLIAM MCGRATH – March 24, 2022

Oxana was punctual and her English was excellent. Oxana was congenial, but incredibly efficient. She followed a thoughtful plan to assure that we would see all of items that were the must-sees for most first-time visitors. Oxana was sensitives to the diverse needs of our group members. We booked Oxana because of her background in fine arts. That proved to be a good choice. She made the Louvre come alive and provided excellent context about the Louvre and its treasures.

TripAdvisor user – August 18, 2019

For large museums we have found it’s best to get a tour guide that focuses on the kids. Oxana did not disappoint! She guided us through the museum like she was telling a story and had a few “quizzes” to solve. We saw terrific highlights of the museum and the kids really enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

TripAdvisor user – July 5, 2019

At the last minute I was inspired to book a private Louvre tour, and Oxana’s info came up readily on a google search. True to her website advice, she responded quickly. Her booking info was pertinent and helpful. I am embarrassed that we had an extremely jet lagged crew of 2 adults and 3 kids (14, 12, and 9) but Oxana stayed completely upbeat and undeterred despite my kids’ cringey eye rolls and nodding off. Oxana got us to less crowded entrances, empty bathrooms and plenty of advice on what options we had. I would love to book Oxana for any tour when we return to Paris. She is a gem!

We had a great 2 hour tour of the Louvre. I learned a lot as did my partner and children. The youngest child(10) wasn’t thrilled but it maintained her attention and she learned a bit about art. I wanted my kids to have a learning experience rather than a ‘look and see’ and that’s exactly what we got!

TripAdvisor user – August 13, 2018

We visited the Louvre on one of the busiest days of the year, a Monday (when other museums are closed) in mid August, but Oxana managed to keep the attention of our 10 and 12 (English speaking) year old for a 2 hour+ tour in the very hot museum. Her quiz questions for the kids were fun for us adults too. Oxana is very easy going and having someone like her guiding you through the Louvre allowed our family to focus on the wealth the Louvre has to offer. Highly recommended!

How to visit the Louvre with kids

The Louvre in Paris is the world’s largest art museum, so big in fact it would be impossible to see all 380,000 pieces the museum exhibits in one day.  Now here’s the scenario. Two kids in tow. Targeting the right pieces with a strategy to navigate the Louvre. And all before the dreaded onset of boredom. A daunting prospect for any parent.

Table of Contents

Watch my highlights video below of the family scavenger hunt around the Louvre.

What to see at the Louvre?

Visiting the Louvre with kids

With around nine to ten million visitors a year, the Louvre museum also takes the crown as the most popular museum in the world. It’s home to some of the most famous artworks and sculptures – Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and of course the Mona Lisa, plus some phenomenal artefacts from the Egyptian and Greek epoch. When you have young impressionable minds to nourish, missing out on these would be a pity.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Something to bear in mind are the signs on the Louvre paintings are obviously all in French. Not a problem for those fluent in French of course, but I hate not being able to answer a ‘What’s this mummy?’ question. The museum does provide audio guides, but it’s not always the best way to visit a museum with young children. Zero interaction is a surefire way of hearing the two ghastly words – ‘I’m bored!’

Visiting the Louvre with kids

So what do we have now – A gargantuan area to cover. Over-crowded. Parental knowledge inadequacy. Visions of a great first visit fading fast into oblivion.

With all this in mind, it was a no-brainer, a tour guide was conducive to a successful first trip. We booked a private two-hour family tour with Paris Muse. It certainly became a highlight of our Parisienne adventure. Here’s why this is one of the best ways to visit the Louvre with young children:

Skip the lines Louvre

Visiting the Louvre with kids

No need for your heart to sink when you see the huge queue outside the glass pyramid entrance waiting for their Louvre museum tickets . Although, there is no escape from the security checks which may have queues; with a Louvre tour guide, you can fast-track your way past the line.  All kids (and most adults) will agree waiting patiently is the pits.

TOP TIP: Don’t bring any large bags. They won’t fit in the lockers provided in the cloakroom

Louvre private tour

We met our guide Henry outside the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel opposite the Louvre. Whilst stood outside the impressive building he engaged the girls with questions and gave us a short recap on its colourful history – From its origins as a fortress in 1190 to a royal palace in the 16th century before opening as a museum at the end of the 18th century.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Henry presented both girls with their own case detective workbook. Their eyes lit up at the fact they’d be on a scavenger hunt around the museum for treasure. The tour is designed to give kids aged 6 – 12 years old an entertaining insight into the history of the masterpieces whilst playing a sleuth detective. Their answers to the clues finally lead them to an educational prize hidden under the Louvre’s glass pyramid.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

The scavenger hunt took us through a broad range of collections from Ancient near East, Egyptian, Greek and Roman through to Renaissance Italian and French.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

On a first visit, it gives you a real sense of the vastness of the museum and touched on all the major masterpieces you’d want to see.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Time to be honest parents. When was the last time you visited a museum with the kids and actually found it relaxing? We’re all super keen to ensure our kids are cultured and hopefully share some of our passion for the arts. Although the days of mooching around and immersing yourself fully in the art are long gone. Well, until you hire a private tour guide .

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Mr S and I shared a knowing look as we walked behind our enthused girls on the scavenger hunt. We revelled in being able to wander around stress-free. There were even proper adult conversations in between polishing up on our own knowledge. Priceless!

All the best bits!

The first clue bought wide eyes aplenty when it took us to the Code of Hammurabi Plinth. It’s the world’s oldest written Babylonian law from ancient Mesopotamia dating back to the 2nd century BC!

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Although excited to finally see the Mona Lisa, like most people the girls found it rather underwhelming in real life when you see it’s only a little larger than an A2 piece of paper. The hordes who surround it daily make it tricky for little ones to catch a glimpse. I promise you she’s in front of the crowd behind bulletproof glass.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Of course, I’ll always find a way for a camera click!

Visiting the Louvre with kids

Next to entice their young minds was the inspiration behind a world-famous sports brand. The Winged Victory of Samothrace is also known as Nike of Samothrace. It’s one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world and conveys action and triumph as well as a sense of incredible movement.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

One of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture is Venus de Milo. Created around 100 BC it’s believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess… the summit of beauty and love. And Venus was her name. She’s got it – yeah baby, she’s got it… Sorry slight digression back the tour.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

The department of Egyptian Antiquities is home to one of the largest sphinx sculptures in existence outside of Egypt.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

The 26 ton Great Sphinx of Tanis had to be pushed through a hole in the wall when there was no machinery available to lift such a weight. Believe me, it’s big.

Visiting the Louvre with kids

And finally…

Visiting the Louvre with kids

I was quite impressed with the level of enthusiasm our guide retained through the course of the two hours with the girls. It’s something we could never have achieved and wonderful to watch them fully immersed in the hunt.

The Louvre can be overwhelming for an adult, never mind a child. This guided family tour is a fantastic way to combine entertainment and education in the world’s most famous museum.

At €320 for a family of 6 or fewer, these tours aren’t cheap. In my opinion, if you’re going to splurge on anything maybe pass on another electronic device and instead go for culture and memories that will last a lifetime.

My parents used to take me to the Louvre regularly as a child, and I remember being bored to death. Of course now, I could spend all day in there (although I’m with your girls, the Mona Lisa still leaves me underwhelmed.) The scavenger hunt is a good idea, and a two-hour tour with an engaging guide must be fun (but that is quite pricey isn’t it?).

' src=

There’s so much to take it that you can just end up switching off, especially as a kid. Yes, it is expensive but I’ve never seen my girls so absorbed and even after 2 hours they could have carried on – Unheard of in a museum scenario. Having experienced it, I think when I head back I’d definitely want to do another one their museums.

' src=

This sounds amazing and a scavenger hunt is so much fun!!!

We all had so much fun Binny. One of the best ways we’ve been to a museum as a family.

' src=

Sounds like so much fun, such a fun and interactive to explore the Louvre

' src=

I’m no kid, but I wouldn’t mind doing a scavenger hunt there as it sounds like so much fun 🙂

' src=

We did a scavenger hunt at the V&A in London and loved it fabulous way to see things you would otherwise miss #CulturedKids

Totally agree Catherine. There is no way I’d be able to impart even half the knowledge.

' src=

A scavenger hunt is a great idea! Tours can really bring a museum or gallery to life, especially if they’re short on the signage or interactive opps. I’d love a tour of the Louvre!

' src=

We walked past the Louvre on our way to the Bateaux Mouches the other day, and it seemed to go on for miles! I last visited over a decade ago, and I’d forgotten just how vast it is. I think a private tour would be a great idea – thanks for the tip. #CulturedKids

Is bloody huge Nell. It was the best thing for us for sure.

' src=

This sounds like the perfect way to explore the Louvre with kids. Scavenger really keep the kids entertained and allow for a more fun museum visit #CulturedKids

For sure Nicky. No way I could have kept their level of interest going for that long.

The Best Louvre Tours for Kids

If you’re visiting the louvre with kids and want a fun and educational experience, i’ve got you covered.

No trip to Paris is complete without visiting the Louvre. But it’s easy to get completely overwhelmed, especially if you’re visiting the Louvre with kids. That’s why the best way to experience the largest museum in the world is by going on a specific Louvre tour for kids.

Unlock the secrets to visiting the Louvre with kids on a fun tour for your family's next cultural excursion in Paris.

Besides the fact that it would take you more than an entire week to explore Paris’ most famous museum, there’s also this little detail about visiting the Louvre with kids…because every parent knows that kids and museums don’t always go hand in hand.

But what if they could explore the Louvre through a scavenger hunt? Or see the sights of the museum with a guide who actually caters to kids.

So whether you’re experiencing the Louvre for the first or fiftieth time, if you’ll be in Paris with children you should—without a doubt—find a kid-friendly Louvre tour to help make your time around the museum more entertaining, more interesting, and more engaging for everyone.

family tour of the louvre

The guides for these Louvre tours for kids are not only experts with the different wings and navigating in, around, and within the museum, but they make it fun to learn about the different famous and not-so-famous art pieces, too.

Good To Know Before You Visit the Louvre

Here are some quick things to know before you visit the Louvre with your family.

Good to Know

The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your trip to Paris accordingly!

CLOSED. The Louvre is closed every Tuesday, so make sure you keep that into consideration when you’re planning your schedule.

It Gets HOT! When we were there in December it was very hot inside. Make sure you wear layers!

Skip the Stroller. Yes, you can technically bring them, but it gets super crowded (even when it’s not a holiday) and baby-wearing will be a better option. We also saw the line for the elevator and, yikes. The wait was very long. Babywearing is not allowed on the back, only the front. You can also borrow/rent a baby carrier from the info desk under the pyramid .

Small Bags Only If you’re bringing a big, travel backpack make sure you check it in one of their lockers.

Get a Passport. Head to the info desk under the pyramid and ask for a “Louvre Passport.” Kids can use it throughout the museum; it’s like their very own Louvre scavenger hunt.

Our Experience with a Kid-Friendly Tour of the Louvre

the louvre with kids - three kids and a dad inside the louvre

We visited Paris with all three of our kids (ages 9, 7, and 5 at the time) during Christmas break. It was a very busy time to be in Paris, and I knew we’d be totally in over our heads walking around the Louvre with kids without a guide.

My husband and I have both been to the Louvre before, but this was their first time and I wanted them to see the highlights in a way that would interest them, like with a Louvre scavenger hunt or something fun like that.

Finding fun Louvre tours for kids was the answer to all of my needs. The only problem was picking a kid-friendly tour of the Louvre.

We ended up booking a Private “ Clues” Family Tour of the Louvre ” with Paris Muse.

a little boy inside the louvre for a family tour

For our family of five, we paid $375 (although I believe they recently upped their prices), and we had a specific timed entrance.

I was thankful for our guide right off the bat; she knew the Louvre like the back of her hand, starting with a different entrance that got us through the line faster. There was an exhibit we were going to see that was randomly closed, but she quickly rerouted us without even hesitating.

The kids LOVED it.

They were asking questions and totally engaging with what she was telling them about the different pieces we looked at. And even though it was one of the busiest museums we’ve ever been in, she managed to find sections in front of major pieces of art where it was just us so we weren’t getting pushed and smushed.

Pick This Up Before Your Trip

We grabbed this fun Louvre scavenger hunt book for the kids before our trip and they loved it as we ventured around Paris. There’s a section in it for the Louvre, so we asked our tour guide if she could point us in the right direction for the exhibits. All three kids liked using this during our trip to Paris.

My Top 3 Picks: Louvre tours for kids

three children on a family louvre tour

I’m not going to lie: Louvre tours for kids are not very cheap. And while my jaw dropped at the price for most of them, I do realize you get what you pay for; sometimes you need to pay more for great service.

These all have fantastic reviews from families, and they all seem like really fun and educational tours of the Louvre specifically for kids. The bright side is that they do include the price of your museum ticket.

Here are three other kid-friendly Louvre tours that I was debating between.

  • Kids & Family Private Louvre Tour . Pick from 1.5, 2, or 3-hour tours. Has more than 240 5-star reviews ☞ check here for prices
  • Louvre Treasure Hunt for Families and Kids . Kids get an age-appropriate activity booklet and a Louvre scavenger hunt kit. Two-hour tour; five-star reviews. ☞ check here for prices
  • Louvre x Families – The Civilizations’ Quest . Interactive and entertaining for the whole family. Three-hour tour; five-star reviews. She books up FAST! ☞ check here for prices

More Awesome Tours of the Louvre for kids

a girl working on a louvre scavenger hunt

While the following tours didn’t make my top list, they were still on my list, so I wanted to share them with you in case they’re right for your family:

  • Louvre Tour for Teens . Games and puzzles to play; 2.5-hour tour; specifically for families with teens. ☞ check here for prices
  • Family Tour with Da Vinci Treasure Hunt . Da Vinci-themed treasure hunt; two-hour tour. ☞ check here for prices
  • Private Louvre Museum Tour for Kids & Families . Immersive and engaging with games and activities. Two-hour tour; five-star reviews. ☞ check here for prices

Where to Stay in Paris with a Family

family tour of the louvre

If you need a place to stay in Paris with your family here are a few that I’ve personally stayed at and recommend.

  • Hotel Caumartin Opera – Astotel . I stayed here with my two daughters and it was perfect. The area was safe, the hotel was clean, and it wasn’t very expensive. We loved the location.
  • Hotel Palm – Astotel. I stayed here with a friend of mine. It was walkable from the train station and easy access to get anywhere in the city. I’d definitely stay here with a family.
  • Center Parcs Villages Nature . This one is outside the city, but fantastic if you have a family, and if you plan on going to Disneyland Paris while you’re in Paris. You can read my review here .
  • MEININGER Hotel Paris Porte de Vincennes . We’ve stayed in several Meiningers around Europe and it’s always a top pick for our family. They’re clean and fun, and all five of us can stay in one room. I have no doubt that this one would be just as great.
  • YOOMA Urban Lodge . I’ve heard fantastic things about YOOMA Urban Lodge, but it’s always booked when we go to Paris. They have rooms for large families, which is awesome.

Find a Place to Stay in Paris

If you’re going to the Louvre with kids soon, I’d love to hear what tour you picked and how it went. And if you’re looking for more info about Paris, check out my other posts here .

WHERE AND WHEN?

About your guide.

After my business studies at HEC interspersed with abroad experiences in the luxury and fashion sector, I worked for 4 years in a consulting firm before launching my dream concept: high-end tourism for families, following a request customers had, looking for activities to do in Paris with their children. By creating my own company, I could serve all my passions at once: cooking, culture and my adopted city of Paris, whose secrets I all know. London was also part of the adventure because it is one of my host cities. Having the attention for detail and quality, I offer tailor-made tours in various European destinations such as of Paris, Loire Valley, and London, Rome and Florence for families wishing to explore these places with their children in an original way and without having to worry about logistics. With my small team of passionate professionals, we developed themed itineraries in the best places, adding for each of them some high-quality activities suitable for children of all ages and interests. Visit the Louvre Museum during a treasure hunt followed by a painting course, relapse in the novel and film The Da Vinci Code with an orientation game, discover French tradition while making the iconic baguette, visit the artistic village of Montmartre while learning french, explore Rome and learn about its history through specially-designed stories, quizzes and games or discover the life of Galileo the famous astronomer and his inventions through a visit to his museum. These are few examples of our organized family tours which allow parents to spend quality time with their children.

average rate :

Melanie did a fantastic job taking us through some interesting parts of the museum, and did an amazing job keeping our 14 and 12 year old fully engaged with the treasure hunt. She was extremely knowledgeable but also had a fabulous way of interacting with the kids as she educated us on the background to some of the important works in the museum. The parents learned a great deal too! A terrific tour by a terrific guide. Thoroughly recommended for families. Thanks Dave, Angela, Brendan and Maggie

After all, it is uniquely designed to accommodate the needs of adults and kids alike since there is a special children’s guide on hand to help facilitate lots of fun activities.

“We had a great tour guide for our 2 hour “family” tour of the Louvre. There was a ton of traffic so we were running late but I was able to use the chat within the Get Your Guide app and someone was able to contact the local guide to let him know that we were on the way. Our guide led us to all of the major pieces while providing interesting facts in a pretty concise way. He wasn’t overly chatty but was happy to answer our questions. It was pretty crowded (and hot, not much air conditioning) so we kind of wanted to move through the rooms pretty quickly and I think the guide was able to read our body language so that was appreciated. He did the tour in English and it was very easy to communicate with him. I would recommend this for families with younger teens and up. My 15 year old enjoyed it and was interested but my 9 and 11 year olds were not very engaged.” Susan ( read more reviews now )

Additionally, you can save tons of time with skip-the-ticket-line access to the museum and a private guide who will escort you through a 650,000-square-foot museum with over 35,000 objects.

I mean, if you want to explore the Louvre on your own, it could take you over 9 months to see it all.

But, with this special tour , you’ll focus on 4-6 intriguing exhibits that will keep everyone entertained and asking questions.

Now, you’ll start with none other than the Mona Lisa herself as you move on to other masterpieces (Venus de Milo, Hermaphrodite, Liberte, etc.) that will leave your jaw perpetually on the floor.

4. Private Tour of the Louvre By Night

View of the glass pyramid in front of the Louvre all lit up in the evening during the best private tour of the Louvre

⭐️ Rating: 5.0/5.0 (20 Reviews) Price: $301.77 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel Operator: Awesome Guide Details: Read more on Viator Now!

Real talk? I hate crowds but abosolutely love the Louvre.

So, to avoid the insane hordes and long lines that regularly inundate the Louvre during the day, I opted for this private Louvre by night tour instead.

Yes, it’s VERY expensive and definitely not within everyone’s budget. But, the tour is three hours long and starts at 6:30 pm.

Therefore, the daytime crowds are long gone and you kind of have time museum more to yourself. Plus, you get to enjoy priority access during this private tour of the Louvre .

So, skip the line and head right inside as you visit the Sully, Richelieu, and Denon departments of the museums with the amazing Beatrice. Yeah, she is a seriously rad guide who 100% knows her stuff.

Anway, the Sully wing is the place where you’ll find the museum’s oldest pieces and is where you can learn more about the art of the Middle Ages.

“Our guide Olga was amazing & would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Louvre! We had her all to ourselves for this tour. She is very knowledgeable about art history, the Louvre & made it a wonderful experience!” Merri ( read more reviews now )

In contrast, the Denon department is where you’ll see magnificent Greek statues, like the Venus de Milo and Victoire de Samothrace, as well as stunnning paintings in the Italian Gallery from Raphael, Da Vinci, Veronese, Caravaggio, and more.

Finally, you’ll end your tour by learning all about the Coronation of Napoleon. So, enoy David’s mammoth painting tells that tells about the Emperor’s coronation in Notre Dame.

All in all, I really enjoyed my experience and think this tour is a fantastic option if you hate crowds, like pirvate tours, and only have 24 hours in Paris .

And don’t worry. You’ll 100% get to see the Mona Lisa and anything else that is on your must-see list.

See, you’ll enjoy two glorious hours at each museum and start the day off with pick up from your centrally located Parisian hotel.

All our Louvre guides are passionate experts in art history. As you stop by the many iconic masterpieces, learn the stories behind the artworks and their creators. Besides the highlights of the Louvre, you'll see many of the lesser-known gems of the museum. After all, the collections inside the historic monument contain 38,000 priceless works of art. And remember, there's no need to consult your guidebook or map, our guides know the Louvre as well as their own living rooms!

Sculptures of the Louvre

The Louvre is not only filled with paintings but it also features many iconic sculptures. Of all the works in the Louvre, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Venus de Milo are some of the most admired. The life-size sculpture of the mythological Sleeping Hermaphroditus carved by Bernini is also an amazing piece of work. These incredible ancient sculptures only represent a fraction of the Louvre's Greek and Roman antiquities you'll get to explore and learn about with your private guide.

Mona Lisa's Smile

Why is Mona Lisa’s smile so mysterious? Is she happy or sad? Leonardo da Vinci’s famous portrait of Lisa Gherardini, titled Mona Lisa , is arguably the most famous painting in the world. The masterpiece also holds a Guinness World Record-breaking insurance policy for approximately $800,000,000! Our guide can't wait to share the stories behind the acclaimed painting, and the fascination with the woman it depicts. Leonardo da Vinci was a true genius who left behind a huge legacy in both science and art.

Renaissance Masters: Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and more

The Mona Lisa is not Leonardo’s only work of art inside the Louvre, and your tour guide will show you more of da Vinci’s works as part of the Louvre’s Italian Renaissance collection.

Besides Leonardo da Vinci, the Louvre also contains works by Renaissance artist Botticelli, master of the 16th-century Venetian school Titian, and the grand scale artist Veronese. Raphael also has work featured throughout the Louvre, one being the famous painting depicting Saint George on a magnificent horse.

Famous French Art

Although the Louvre is filled with the works of many international artists, you'll also see some truly iconic French masterpieces—after all, you are in France! The Louvre offers opportunities to visit works by Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon's personal painter, and Eugène Delacroix. Delacroix's most famous piece, Liberty Leading The People , is one of France's most beloved paintings, depicting the 1830 French Revolution. It was also the inspiration for one of the world's most famous landmarks: the Statue of Liberty in New York.

A Glimpse of Royal France

Did you know that the Louvre is a former royal palace? With such a strong association to royalty, a visit to the Louvre is incomplete without seeing the crown jewels of France. The surviving French crown jewels are on display in the Louvre’s Galerie d'Apollon.

It was a tradition to have a new crown created for each coronation in France. With your guide's narration, it is easy to imagine the extravagance of the crowns created throughout history for each new king and queen.

At The Tour Guy, we put a huge amount of energy into all our tours, including our private Louvre tour. Star Star Star Star Star - Fascinating

Written by chantal baldacci, 02-04-2024.

We had a wonderful family time with our grandchildren, who were discovering the Louvre for the first time, thanks to a fascinating tour guide. She knew how to adapt the visit to a child's point of view, while also addressing an adult audience. She made us want to repeat the experience. Many thanks to her

Star Star Star Star Star - Masterpieces from the Louvre

Written by hélène bastien , 03-13-2024.

After our visit to the Louvre, I wasn't sure whether my grandsons had really enjoyed it. But the next day, after visiting Versailles with an audio guide, Alexis said: "We could have done with a guide. And for Emile, the Louvre remains his favorite visit. Mission accomplished for Astrid. We had no trouble booking the tour, and the people in charge communicated well with us, so of course I'd recommend this activity.

Thank you Pauline for captivating the interest of our 6 and 8 year old grandchildren (which was no easy feat) throughout this wonderful visit to the Louvres. Thank you for your kindness and we'll certainly be seeing you again soon. I recommend this service to parents and grandparents who want to awaken their children to the world of art and history... Written by sylvie isambert, on 17-02-2024.

No problem booking online. We really appreciated the tour guide A little expensive, but the five-person tour was very comfortable. Yes, an activity to be recommended, especially for teenagers' first contact with a museum.

Star Star Star Star Star - Great visit to the Louvre with Cyril

Written by andrea allegra, 12-12-2023.

Cyril is a passionate and fascinating guide. Young and old alike were captivated by his explanations, anecdotes and games. The children were delighted, and so were the parents. What a pleasure it was to follow Cyril around the Louvre, which he seemed to know like the back of his hand, whereas on our own we'd have got lost or at least missed out on so many interesting works. This was our second visit with Cyril, and we've already planned a third for January! Easy contact with the agency, punctuality and perfect organization.

Star Star Star Star Star - Great!

Written by virginie magne, 31-10-2023.

Our guide Pauline knew how to adapt to each of us: an 8-year-old, a 17-year-old and 2 adults. We lost no time and all loved the Egyptian tour. I'd do it again with a different theme - it was top-notch! Thanks Pauline

Star Star Star Star Star - Private guided tour at the Louvre: A really fun and educational experience

Written by monica ladekarl, 28-10-2023.

We are a Danish family with two teenagers (18 and 13) that went to the Louvre for the first time. We met the guide, Pauline, outside, who helped us enter the museum as fast and easy as possible. Pauline took us through a two-hour long teenage-friendly highlight tour. She was so nice and knowledgeable and kept our children interested the whole tour. Especially the museum's own history was fascinating for them. We definitely recommend and will probably book a private guide again for another museum when we return to Paris.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Louvre with Cyril. The challenge with this kind of visit is to appeal to all ages; 7, 11 and 14... Cyril kept them interested for 2 hours. We came away delighted with our visit. Thank you Cyril

Star Star Star Star Star - A memorable visit

Written by joanna degrange, 08-06-2023.

Incredibly interesting visit for children and adults alike. The guide immediately put the children at ease and told us lots of anecdotes about the works. The time passed very quickly, and the children's attention remained at a maximum for the whole 2 hours, even the 8-year-olds.

Star Star Star Star Star - Great site

Written by joanne suissa, 18-04-2023.

I am delighted with my experience with Familin. A variety of activities are offered, depending on the age of the children. Ideas are suggested. I visited the Louvre on a private tour with Pauline. My 5-year-old son, despite his condition (a bit sick), was delighted, as were my husband and myself. I can only recommend this site!

10 Tips For Visiting The Louvre (Paris, France)

T he Louvre, a treasure trove of art and history nestled in the heart of Paris, is a must-visit for any art enthusiast or traveler. With its vast collection spanning centuries and cultures, exploring the Louvre can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. To ensure you make the most of your visit, here are 10 essential tips to navigate this iconic museum.

1. Plan Ahead

Begin your Louvre adventure by planning ahead. The museum is colossal, and attempting to see everything in one visit can be daunting. Research the Louvre's layout, highlight the must-see artworks, and create a personalized itinerary. Prioritize your interests, be it Renaissance paintings, ancient sculptures, or Egyptian artifacts, to tailor your visit accordingly.

2. Purchase Tickets in Advance

Save valuable time by purchasing your tickets online in advance. The Louvre is immensely popular, and the lines can be exceptionally long. Opting for skip-the-line tickets allows you to breeze through the entrance and dive straight into the cultural wonders awaiting you inside.

3. Visit Off-Peak Hours

To maximize your enjoyment and minimize the crowds, consider visiting during off-peak hours. Early mornings or late afternoons on weekdays are ideal times to explore the Louvre with a bit more tranquility. You'll have a better chance to appreciate the masterpieces without the hustle and bustle.

4. Take Advantage of Guided Tours

Engage in the expertise of a guided tour to gain deeper insights into the Louvre's vast collection. Knowledgeable guides can provide historical context, fascinating anecdotes, and help you navigate the expansive museum efficiently. Some tours even offer exclusive access to certain areas, enhancing your overall experience.

5. Wear Comfortable Attire

Prepare for a day of walking and exploration by wearing comfortable clothing and footwear. The Louvre's sheer size requires a fair amount of walking, and comfortable attire will ensure you stay energized and focused on the art rather than discomfort.

6. Focus on the Highlights

With over 35,000 pieces on display, it's crucial to focus on the highlights to avoid feeling overwhelmed. The Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace are among the Louvre's star attractions. Identify your must-see artworks and plan your route accordingly.

7. Bring Snacks and Stay Hydrated

Exploring the Louvre can be a time-consuming endeavor, and hunger or dehydration can dampen your experience. Pack some snacks and a reusable water bottle to keep yourself fueled and refreshed throughout your visit. There are designated areas where you can take a break and enjoy a snack.

8. Respect Art Etiquette

While admiring the masterpieces, it's essential to observe proper art etiquette. Refrain from touching the artwork, use flash photography, or creating disturbances. Respectful behavior ensures a pleasant experience for you and fellow art enthusiasts.

9. Explore Beyond the Obvious

While the Louvre's iconic pieces are undoubtedly breathtaking, don't hesitate to explore beyond the obvious. Wander through lesser-known galleries and hidden corners to discover hidden gems and lesser-known treasures. You might stumble upon artworks that resonate with you on a personal level.

10. Reflect and Relax

After immersing yourself in the richness of the Louvre, take some time to reflect and relax. Find a peaceful spot in the museum's expansive courtyard, the Cour Carrée, or nearby Tuileries Garden. Absorb the cultural magnitude of your visit and savor the memories created within the walls of this historic institution.

Conclusion:

A visit to the Louvre in Paris is an unforgettable journey through time and art. By planning ahead, utilizing skip-the-line tickets, and embracing these tips, you can transform your Louvre experience into a seamless and enriching adventure. Navigate the labyrinth of artistic wonders with confidence, and let the Louvre's magnificence leave an indelible mark on your travel memories.
