Luckily, with tried and tested spots in this guide to the best places to eat in Brussels, deciding where to dine just got a lot easier.

The Best Restaurants in Brussels

Brussels loves innovation, and Baogo’s Asian fusion menu does exactly that. You’ll find burgers in soft bao buns, with classic cheeseburgers and other exciting fillings like katsu prawn burgers or pulled pork.

The burgers are served up with fries (the sweet potato fries are the best!) and you’ll find some other sides on the menu as well.

La Piola Pizza

La Piola is widely famed as the best pizza in Brussels. Offering up traditional wood-fired pizzas in a lively square in the Saint-Josse Neighbourhood, La Piola Pizza has a wonderfully laid-back vibe and a homely feel.

The menu is fresh, varied, and well-priced for such good quality dishes. I’m boring when it comes to pizza so I’ve only tried the Margherita, but I can’t deny that it was delicious!

When a restaurant only has one thing on the menu, you know it’s going to be good! Ballekes is dedicated to the Belgian meatball, one of the best traditional foods from Belgium , and boy do they do it well.

Choose from beef and pork, chicken, or vegan meatballs and top with an amazing homemade sauce of your choice. Then take your pick from the best Belgian sides to accompany it, and you have a traditional Belgian meal at a great price!

Umamido Ramen

Umamido Ramen has four restaurants in Brussels alone – a true Brussels institution! Top Tip – there are more locations across Belgium, so keep Umamido in mind if you’re visiting Antwerp , Ghent , or Leuven .

Here, they pride themselves in ‘Honest Ramen’ and work hard to serve up nothing but simply delicious Japanese food. With ramen, donburi, and a few sides, Uamamido is a treat for the tastebuds and perfect for a light and easy lunch in Brussels.

Fin de Siècle

Exploring different cuisines is great, but it’s always important to try out the traditional food – especially in a country as foodie mad as Belgium. The best way to do that is in a restaurant locals love, and Fin de Siècle fits the bill.

You’ll find a whole host of hearty, Belgian meals here, like Carbonnade and Stoemp, and some lovely Belgian beers.

Fun Fact: Rue des Chartreux seems to be the sweet spot for Belgian restaurants in Brussels, as you’ll find the equally popular and delicious 9 et Voisins on this street, as well as Greenwich Modern right next door to Fin de Siècle!

Nona Pizza + Pasta

There’s fierce competition for the best Italian food at Brussels’ restaurants, but both Nona Pizza and Nona Pasta deserve a place with the greats. The team at Nona have a simple mission – to make traditional Italian food with local Belgian ingredients. It’s the perfect fusion of two foodie giants and whether you try the wood-fired pizza or the rich homemade pasta, you’ll enjoy some spectacular flavours.

There are now four Nona outlets in Brussels – three pizzerias in Sainte Catherine, Merode, and Flagey, and a pasta restaurant next to the Sainte Catherine location.

Takumi Ramen

Joining the thriving Japanese cuisine scene in Brussels, Takumi Ramen offer up authentic ramen, donburi, gyoza and more. If you find yourself wondering where to eat in Brussels, Takumi is always an easy find with four locations across the city.

One of my favourite things about Takumi Ramen is that the menu varies across the different locations. Mainly, in some restaurants you’ll find chicken broth ramen, and in others Tonkotsu broth ramen, but you’ll also find different ramen ingredients and dishes as well. This means you can visit Takumi many times and have a different experience.

Hailing themselves as the first dedicated smash burger restaurant in Brussels, Rambo now has two locations across the city – one for takeaway orders and one with a seated restaurant area. And with a simple menu of three burgers (of course with fries on the side!), they’ve really committed themselves to perfecting the art of the smash burger.

Choose from the classic, the special, or the meat-free burger, and find yourself transported to the US, the true birthplace of the smash burger. Then, the traditional Belgian fries will bring you right back to the streets of Brussels.

Food markets are becoming increasingly popular in European cities (the Time Out Market in Lisbon always springs to mind!) and Wolf is Brussels’ answer to this concept.

The super fun space features street food versions of some of the best restaurants in Brussels like My Tannour and La Piola Pizza, as well as exclusive outlets including 10 Grams and Dim’s. You’ll also find a bar and a microbrewery, a chocolatier, and a zero-waste market.

Wolf is the perfect place to come for delicious food paired with an exciting experience. The best thing is that there is so much food to choose from, so if you can’t decide what to eat for dinner, just take a lap of the market and your senses will make up your mind for you.

Walkin’ Thai

For easy, fresh Thai food near the popular spot Flagey, try Walkin’ Thai. They have a simple menu of Pad Thai, other noodle and rice dishes and Thai curries, plus a great selection of starters and soups.

Of course, I recommend their speciality – Pad Thai. It is fresh and delicious, and the portions are generous for the price.

The Best Brunch in Brussels

For Sunday brunch in Brussels with a Mexican vibe, head to Tigermilk in Bailli. Their brunch deal gets you a Mexican main, with dishes like the breakfast quesadilla and huevos rancheros (of course, avocado toast is also available) as well as a sweet dish, hot drink, and cold drink.

The aesthetic of Tigermilk is so beautiful, and the food is just as nice. And if you’re more in the market for Brussels restaurants, they have a regular menu with Mexican meals and fun cocktails!

Although also a bar and evening restaurant with creative cocktails and a laidback food menu, for me the brunch at La Luck is the main draw! Served at weekends until mid-afternoon, this is definitely some of the best food in Brussels. I tried the truffle croque monsieur as well as the peach and goat’s cheese toast and both were exceptional.

If you get the chance, make sure you also visit in the evening. You can find a small Canadian-inspired menu of poutine, burgers and hotdogs, as well as some charcuterie. And if you’re looking for a unique way to spend your evening in Brussels, you can enjoy a few drinks while playing a variety of board games at La Luck!

The chicest brunch spot in the city and one of the best places to eat in Brussels’ city centre, Frank. serves up deliciously fresh food and coffee. The sweet pancakes are a personal favourite of mine, but the poached egg dishes come highly recommended as well.

As well as a great coffee menu, you’ll find teas and a variety of cold drinks – I recommend the fresh apple juice or seasonal lemonade. And on your way out, why not pick up one of their delicious cakes to enjoy later?!

Woodpecker is a Brussels favourite, and you’ll often see the locals flock here for brunch on the weekends. With a mix of indoor spaces, and kiosks around some of Brussels’ best parks (link), Woodpecker has really made its mark as one of the best places to eat in Brussels.

Although the menus vary a little across the locations, you’ll generally find a traditional brunch menu at the indoor cafés, with a selection for lunch as well, and easy street food like hot dogs, burgers and toasties at the kiosks. They specialise in waffles, pancakes, and eggs benedict dishes, and usually have some enticing seasonal specials.

Other Places To Eat in Brussels

Coco donuts.

Most of the sweet treats in Brussels are centred around waffles but don’t miss out on the most adorable doughnut spot in the city. I’m not sure if a doughnut shop can be called instagrammable but if anywhere could, it’s Coco Donuts.

Of course, it’s the food that matters most, and luckily the doughnuts taste as good as they look. They offer a great range of exciting flavours, like smores, peanut butter and jelly, and wild berries. On the weekends you can expect a little queue, but trust me, it’s worth it!

Fine Bakery

Nestled in the streets of Sablon, this unassuming bakery is definitely more than just fine . Here, you’ll find some of the best pastries in Brussels, as well as homemade bread and other specialities (such as the very popular cruffin, the love child of a croissant and a muffin).

Fine Bakery is the perfect place for your morning pastry fix and is well situated for a relaxing stroll around the centre with your goodies.

Café du Sablon

If there was a competition for the restaurant or café in Brussels with the best view, Café du Sablon would take the cake. Looking out directly to the gorgeous and gothic Church of Our Lady of Victories at the Sablon , Café du Sablon is bright and airy, and a truly lovely place to come for lunch or coffee. With fast a free wifi, it’s also a great place to come and get some work done.

The menu at Café du Sablon is very brunch-centred, with smoothie bowls, topped toasts, pancakes, cakes, and more. I recommend the Croque Monsieur!

Cafe de la Presse

Café de la Presse is a spacious café in the Louise neighbourhood of Brussels, with a menu to make any foodie drool! With soups, sandwiches, and toasts, as well as brunch plates and smoothie bowls, there is lots to be enjoyed here. Of course, you can also enjoy a coffee!

On a sunny day, it’s a great idea to grab some food to go and picnic at the nearby Bois de la Cambre . You can enjoy a delicious lunch in beautiful surroundings.

Have a Roll

I wouldn’t have thought Brussels was missing a speciality cinnamon roll bar, but Have a Roll really is something remarkable. Head to Bailli and try the wide range of rolls – you could go with the classic cinnamon or try one of the more creative offerings. There are even seasonal specials to be enjoyed.

Top Tip: Have a roll began in Antwerp – why not take a day trip or spend a weekend in Antwerp to visit the original store!

Discover the best things to do in Brussels below!

The Best Street Food in Brussels

I could list countless places to eat in Brussels (as I’ve already done in this guide!), from fancy restaurants and global cuisine to cute brunch cafés and authentic pizzerias, but the truth is, my favourite places to eat in Brussels are simple, cheap street food outlets.

One of the best things about this city is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to experience authentic Belgian cuisine, as some of the most iconic traditional dishes are fries and waffles, found in carts and stalls around Brussels.

Maison Antoine

Maison Antoine is the best place to go if you want to enjoy fries with a beer and a lively atmosphere on the side. This popular fries stall is found in the centre of the bustling Place Jourdan, and you can enjoy your fries at most of the surrounding bars as long as you buy a beer or two!

Location | Website | Menu | Veggie/Vegan Friendly? A few veggie options; fries are not veggie-friendly | Price $

Café Georgette

For the best fries in the centre of Brussels, try Café Georgette. This spot is actually a restaurant, but the friterie attached to the side is by far the most popular attraction. Jutting out of the corner of a red brick building, on the cobbles of a bustling street in the heart of the city, it doesn’t get more quintessentially Brussels than this.

My top recommendation at Café Georgette is to order the truffle (tartufata) sauce with your fries!

Location | Website | Veggie/Vegan Friendly? No – fries are not veggie friendly | Price $

Australian is the best place for simple and delicious Belgian waffles in Brussels. What’s more, there are multiple outlets in the city, so whenever you get hungry, you’ll most likely find an Australian just around the corner.

You can get all sorts of toppings on your Australian waffles, including their famous ice cream, but my favourite thing to get is a plain, hot waffle. For more waffle recommendations, check out my guide to the best Belgian waffles in Brussels .

Website (with locations) | Veggie/Vegan Friendly? Yes (note: waffles aren’t vegan, try Veganwaf’ ) | Price $

Frites Atelier

Although the fries stalls around Brussels are not lacking by any means, it’s nice to try something a little more gourmet. Frites Atelier specialises in loaded fries. The flemish beef stew fries are a must-try, and their limited edition specials are usually a stand-out as well!

These fries do come with a slightly higher price tag (around €6 for regular fries with sauce and €7-11 for loaded fries). Personally, I wouldn’t get plain fries with sauce here, you’ll find much better value at other spots. However, the loaded fries are pretty unique and filling, and I think they make a great treat for lunch.

Location | Website | Menu | Veggie/Vegan Friendly? Yes (but double-check when visiting as Belgian fries aren’t always veggie) | Price $$

Are you hungry yet? I know I am! I’m sure with this bumper list of the best restaurants in Brussels (as well as many other Brussels foodie spots) under your belt, you just can’t wait to get out in Brussels and start tasting all the delicious food this city has to offer.

Wondering where this restaurant got its name? It's simple! The name of the restaurant, Barge , comes from the first names of the owners, Bar bara and G regoir e . Here, no limits to creativity, and a clear vision of the future: a more circular and equitable food system. Every bite is a statement of intent, a commitment to a better future.

But that's not all. Every euro spent in this exceptional place contributes to a larger project: the non-profit organization Hearth Project, which fights valiantly against food waste and insecurity. To eat here is to savor with a generous heart, as every profit supports this noble cause.

So, whether you are a lover of conscious flavors or simply looking for a unique gastronomic experience, this restaurant in the heart of Brussels is much more than a gourmet address. It is an act of kindness towards our planet and our society.

I am just back from a long weekend in Belgium and I must say, Belgian people know how to eat well and A LOT.

Having lived there previously, I already know where to eat traditional Belgian food in Brussels, and I ate my weight in food during my visit.

Because even days after my 3 days stay, I can still feel the tensioning sensation of my belt.

Indeed, traditional Belgian food is not the lightest… but definitely a delight!

Many of you might think that Belgian food is just about fries, beer, and chocolate.

Where to eat Traditional Belgian Food in Brussels, plate of raw steak with french fries, sauce and salad on a table beside a glass of wine and container of cutlery

Well, you are not totally wrong but don’t commit the mistake to think that the Belgian world of fries, beer, and chocolate is plain and simple; nothing less than that!

Let me take you on a food tour through Brussels where the art of beer brewing and  chocolaterie  is raised to a new level.

After living 3 years in Brussels and visiting often, I prepared this selection of my favorite places where to eat Belgian food in Brussels.

1. Belgian Chocolate (at “Chocolatier Laurent Gerbaud”)

best belgian restaurant brussels has to offer, yellow shelf with jars of chillis and nuts and cards with abstract expressionist art and the restaurant logo in front of a small chalkboard with French written on it

Laurent Gerbaud is one of Brussel’s chocolatiers that is determined to extend the classic image of fine Belgian chocolate to a creative and innovative level.

Monsieur  Gerbaud’s shop is located close to some of Brussels’ most popular sights like the  Musée Magritte  or the  Royal Square .

From the outside, his place looks rather inconspicuous, but as soon as you step in, you’ll realize you’re in chocolate heaven… probably Belgium’s most famous food.

Monsieur  Gerbaud doesn’t only sell exotic chocolate creations, but he also holds workshops in the atelier right next to the shop.

Here he explains in his passionate way, why chocolate is much more than the mass production that we are used to devouring day by day.

We experienced a real voyage via our sense of taste through the complex but fascinating world of chocolate.

Monsieur  Gerbaud’s lays focuses on the importance of knowing the origins of what you eat and challenges your traditional ideas of how chocolate has to be.

It does this by indulging you with creations including ginger, dried fruits or exotic nuts.

where to get the best belgian food in brussels, two long black plates with rectangle of different chocolates for tasting next to a glass of water

Of course the  orangette , a Belgian chocolate classic cannot to be omitted.

Laurent Gerbaud’s innovative understanding of chocolate can’t be understood without his expat experience in China.

After studying Medieval Studies (!), he went to China because he was madly fascinated with Asian culture.

But the Asian taste was totally different from what he was used to eat Belgium.

There was no dessert culture ( at that time ), they hardly ate any butter or sugar…

What a trauma for a young student coming from a country with the finest chocolates in the world!

Needless to say that  Monsieur  Gerbaud was missing the Belgian chocolate culture.

best food from belgium, rows of bowls with different dried fruits and nuts

He started elaborating his very own chocolate in his student apartment and selling his creations to ex-pats and embassies.

His tasteful chocolates became more and more successful until he decided to return to Belgium and open up his little paradise for chocolate lovers.

Thus many of his creations, even his logotype, reflect his Chinese legacy: low fat, as little sugar as possible, and daring ingredient combinations…

For all those who want to get a deeper insight into the intricate world of Belgian chocolate and slow food, experiencing a chocolate workshop with  Monsieur  Laurent Gerbaud is a must!

2. Belgian Beer (at “Brussels Beer Project”)

must try traditional brussels food, two shelves of beer next to a wall with large letters in blue and white

Of course, you must include a beer stop in your visit to Brussels since beer is as inseparable from Brussels as chocolate.

You’ll be spoilt for choice between fruit beers, dark beers or abbey beers.

All of them have something in common: they have a very long historical background – some even go back to the 15th century.

Do you want to taste a beer that represents today’s cosmopolitan Brussels? Then, head to the Brussels Beer Project!

where to get the best traditional beer in brussels, numbered barrels of beer against a wall

The idea of innovating and spicing up the traditional Belgian craft beer brewing scene could come to life thanks to crowdfunding.

They opened up their headquarters in the heart of Brussels including a bar, a shop and a brewery.

You can actually enjoy your beer right next to the brew kettles.

The Brussels Beer Project aspires to reflect the bold and vibrant character of Brussels today.

They produce only a limited quantity but in a variety ranging from Pale Ale to Double Chocolate Salted Imperial Stout.

I mean, have you ever tried Oyster Stout with Oysters from Brittany?

Or an Aztec Dry Stout infused with Chipotle Chile & Cocoa Nibs?

where to try the best brussels cuisine, table with two beer glasses filled with craft beer next to a beer bottle

The project lays a special focus on the communal aspect: everybody can participate in the selection of the brewery’s best creations by promoting one recipe that was particularly popular.

They also organize private beer-tasting sessions where you can immerse in the fascinating world of bold beer brewing.

I especially liked their idea of recycling old bread to create a new beer.

There is even the ambitious project of making bread with the residues of freshly brewed beer, which would perfectly close the beer/bread circle. What a ground-breaking concept!

The vibrant colors of their beer labels particularly stole my heart.

3. Belgian Seafood (at “L’Ecailler du Palais Royal”)

typical food in brussels, bowl of oysters and lemons

L’Ecailler du Palais Royal  (in English: who scales the fish or opens the oysters at the Royal Palace) is literally hidden behind imposing brick walls on one of Brussels’ oldest squares:  Le Sablon .

But from the moment you enter the dining room, you’ll feel how, little by little, the cozy atmosphere will conquer you.

This ease will not release you until the very end of this culinary experience.

Warm blue colors in combination with dark wood and turquoise velvet-covered bench seats give the interior a snug club comfort.

The dedication and affectionate service of a well-coordinated team let you forget about all your worries and just care about the real pleasures in life.

Here you can treat yourself with the freshest seafood, elaborated local fish menus and crustaceans.

delicious belgium cuisine, plate of filleted fish surrounded by garnish

L’Ecailler du Palais Royal  is a real institution in the gastronomic scene of Brussels as it combines refined cuisine with a tranquil setting since 1967.

Since then it welcomed royal families, politicians and celebrities alike in its 17th-century house.

best belgian restaurants in brussels, man serving food into a bowl in front of a wall painted to look like blue fins

During my dining experience, they served exquisite creations with enchanting names such as “Red Tuna Bonbon with Crab Meat and Guacamole” or “Bream in creamy  chanderelles  sauce”.

And it would truly be a cardinal sin to skip the desserts!

I went for the “Passion et Chocolat Intense” joined by a sweet “ Grenache ” wine … and I was the happiest chocolate girl in the world!

As I am a huge tea lover, I was really amazed to choose from their extensive tea menu card.

Without any doubt, this is one of the best places to eat in Brussels, especially for fish and seafood lovers.

No wonder that it has been featured many times as top seafood restaurant in Brussels.

where to get the best belgian food, plate of meat and garnish

It’s the perfect place for those who want to experience a more refined version of Belgian cuisine.

You can especially enjoy the Belgian classics like shrimp croquettes and baby soles from Zeebrugge also figure on the menu of  L’Ecailler du Palais Royal.

Without any doubt, it has some of best seafood in Brussels!

4. Tartare (at “Brasserie Taverne du Passage”)

top belgian restaurants in brussels, outside of a Belgian restaurant

Well protected under Brussels’ prettiest glazed shopping gallery,  Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert ,  Brasserie Taverne du Passage  is a real institution in Brussels’ gastronomic scene.

Its art-déco interior design will immerse you in past times, and also reminded me a bit of the typical brasseries that you expect to see in Paris.

If you are looking for Brussels, Belgium food to eat, you can’t skip  tartare .

It’s raw, minced meat with egg yolk, mayonnaise, chopped onions and a seasoning that varies from restaurant to restaurant.

Even though it might be surprising to foreigners, this is one of the most popular food in Belgium.

Every time I visit Belgium, a  tartare  is a must because it’s different all the time, and I loved the one they served at  La Brasserie du Passage .

The staff was very attentive and seasoned with a good sense of humor.

It’s easy to see why  Brasserie Taverne du Passage  seems to be popular especially among the local population: you’re in Brussels’ city center but protected from the tourist crowds.

And its warm-hearted atmosphere lets you feel like in a cozy living room.

where to try typical brussels food, long fancy set tables inside of a restaurant

During our visit, we shared the dining room with elderly couples, who seemed to come here on a regular basis.

In my eyes, there is no better evidence for long-lasting quality than a grandma who knows where to get the best food!

Apparently, even Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, enjoys dining in  Brasserie Taverne du Passage  when she is in town.

Nothing better than some real Belgian fries to disconnect from a hectic EU summit and meeting schedule, right?

Traditional Belgian and French plates are the specialty of  Brasserie Taverne du Passage.

They also seem to be adept of serving quantity in the plate: pots full of fresh mussels, huge shrimp croquettes and the most creamy mousse au chocolat  ever .

Soulfood but with premium and local ingredients.

If you want to get the authentic, “ good old Brussels ” dining experience in an art-déco setting, then you’ll love  Brasserie Taverne du Passage.

5. Shrimp croquettes (at “Rooftop bar of Musical Instruments Museum”)

Where to Eat Traditional Belgian Food in Brussels, aerial view over Brussels with view of the Grand Place from the restaurant Museum of Musical Instruments

The  Museum of Musical Instruments  is set in Brussels’ emblematic (and also probably most beautiful) building: the legendary “ Old England ” House, in the heart of Brussels.

I know, I might use a lot of superlatives in this post, but that’s because we only got to see the best that Brussels has to offer.

It’s my favorite place to eat shrimp croquettes which is one of the most popular Brussels food.

They are fluffy inside and crunchy outside… thus the perfect mix for getting addicted.

Traditionally they are prepared with mini shrimps from Belgian coast villages like  Knokke and are one of the most emblematic food specialities in Belgium.

The Museum of Musical Instruments is one of the cultural institutions that form together with the  Mont des Arts , Brussels’ Museum district. – Get your fast track ticket to the Museum of Musical Instruments

The restaurant is located on the rooftop of the Museum from which you’ll enjoy the best view all over the historic center of Brussels.

The  Grand-Place  seems to be at a stone’s throw, the Royal Palace as well and on sunny days you can even spot the Atomium or the emblematic  Koekelberg  church.

This place already seems to be very popular among tourists, thus if you want to get one of the few window seats, you better book in advance.

where to eat belgium dishes in brussels, exterior of Musical Instruments Museum building

The cuisine served is traditional Belgian and international dishes at reasonable prices.

Additionally, the menu changes according to the seasons so you can get something new everytime you visit.

I went for the  Filet Américain , which is a must when you visit Belgium.

It is basically raw meat seasoned with several spices, vinegar, eggs, onions, a pinch of garlic, capers, Tabasco, mayonnaise.

There is no fixed  Filet Américain  recipe and it can be seasoned to everybody’s liking.

The rooftop terrasse of Brussels’  Museum of Musical Instruments  is also the perfect place in case you want to disconnect from the sightseeing and the tourists crowds.

Enjoy a glass of cava while allowing your thoughts to fly away over Brussels’ sky.

Even for a short visit, if you’re looking for things to do in Brussels in a day , the Museum of Musical Instruments is a great spot to visit.

6. Waffles (at Brussels Food trucks)

where to get the best belgium food in brussels, yellow food truck van with pictures of waffles and smurfs on outside

Of course, you can’t leave Brussels without having 1 waffle (or many more as in my case)!

It is without any doubt one of the most traditional Belgian food in Brussels.

There are 2 kinds of waffles, the ones from Brussels and the ones from  Liège  (a town in eastern Belgium).

The ones from Brussels are thin, with yeast-leavened batter which makes them lighter.

The waffles from Liège have a batter that is similar to bread dough.

Chunks of sugar are hidden inside the dough of Liege waffles which caramelize with the heat and give the waffle its golden color.

The Liege waffle is chewier whereas the Brussels waffle is a little bit more crispy.

Luckily you can get these delicious Liege waffles in Brussels too!

Whereas every  Bruxellois  might have its favorite spot to get the best waffles in town, I really like to get mine at the little yellow food trucks.

If you have a sweet tooth and want to know where to eat traditional Belgian food in Brussels, you can’t go wrong with a food truck!

These food trucks are definitely among the best Belgian restaurants in Brussels.

To whet your appetite, you can smell them miles away!

On top, they remind me of my studies in Brussels, when the best reward of a long linguistic course, was a delicious warm waffle.

Have you tried waffles in Belgium? Which one did you prefer? Brussels waffle or Liège waffle?

7. Meatballs (at “Balls&Glory”)

typical and traditional food in brussels, plate of meatballs in sauce

Did you know that meatballs is one of the most typical Belgian food you can get out there?

It’s probably the favorite dish of every kid in Belgium .

This is the kind of dish that your grandmother prepares for you with loads of love.

But short of befriending someone else’s grandmother, it’s one of the best belgium food in brussels to try at a restaurant.

While every restaurant and home as its very own recipe of meatballs, they are usually served in tomato sauce.

As a side, you can opt between Belgian fries or potato puree .

On top, every region in Belgium has its particular designation and recipe of this traditional Belgian food.

In Liege , they are called boulettes , in the Flemish part they go by balletjes .

Whereas you can enjoy this traditional Belgian food in almost every restaurant, I highly recommend trying Balls&Glory .

Located in the city center of Brussels, near Bourse , Balls&Glory is today synonymous of a modern interpretation of this Belgium national food.

Some say that they had the best meatballs in their life at Balls&Glory.

Without any doubt, a great place to enjoy the best food in Brussels…and you can even order their food online for takeaway!

And if after all this eatery you need to burn some calories, make sure to check some of these best hiking trails near Brussels .

8. Vol-au-Vent (at “L’Entree des Artistes”)

traditional belgian food in brussels: plate of vol au vent

This dish is maybe not the most famous food in Brussels, but one of my favorite ones.

It’s so popular that even the neighboring country Luxembourg adopted it as its unofficial, national food too!

Translated as “flying in the wind”, vol-au-vent is a creamy chicken strew usually served in and around a salty puff pastry.

Every recipe is different and some add mushrooms in the sauce.

Traditionally this hearty dish is served with fries (what else?), mashed potatoes or potatoes croquettes.

It is one of the most typical food to eat in Brussels and I’ve been told that you can find the best vol-au-vent in “ L’Entrée des Artistes ” on the medieval Sablon square.

9. Belgian Mussels (at “Le Zinneke”)

where to get the best authentic belgian food, bowl of mussels in broth next to large black pot of mussels

Anyone looking to try the tastiest Brussels cuisine should not ignore the seafood options.

Mussels are a Belgian speciality, and nowhere does them better in Brussels than Le Zinneke.

It is undoubtedly some of the most delicious traditional Belgian Food in Brussels you have to try.

Not only is Le Zinneke the best Belgian restaurant in Brussels for eating mussels, but it is possibly the best Belgian restaurant Brussels has to offer, period.

Le Zinneke has taken this typical Brussels food and elevated it to its highest form.

No matter how you like your mussels, Le Zinneke has that option available on their menu.

There are 70 different mussels dishes on the menu at Le Zinneke, so it’s no wonder this is the Belgium national dish.

Just grab a table in this cosy restaurant, pick your favorite and wash them down with a glass of white wine or a cool beer, depending on your choice.

To make the most of your classic Belgian food, try dining out on their rooftop terrace in the summer.

If you’re planning on a night on the town in Brussels after dinner, Le Zinneke has a Happy Hour offer of 25% off if you finish dining before 8:20pm.

Just make sure to book in advance!

10. Belgian fries (at “Maison Antoine”)

best belgium food in brussels, french fries covered with a spicy orange sauce

One dish that’s popular the world over is French fries, but Maison Antoine has taken this delicious snack to a whole new level of excellence!

This highly popular eatery is more unique than most other popular Belgian restaurants in Brussels, because it’s a kiosk!

Maison Antoine was founded by Antoine Desmet in 1948, and has gone from strength to strength as it’s been handed down from generation to generation in the Desmet family.

Located in Place Jourdan in the Etterbeek district of Brussels, tourists and locals alike flock to this shack for a handful of deliciously fried potato perfection.

Like a lot of typical food in Brussels, your portion of fries comes with a wide range of options for customization.

There are over 30 different sauces ranging from mild and light to fiery and fierce.

Under the guidance of the Desmet family, the Belgian fries of Maison Antoine have become a worldwide sensation.

Many visitors looking for Belgium cuisine make a point of coming to Brussels just to try this expertly prepared local delicacy.

Even the United States thinks Maison Antoine serves some of the best Belgian food in Brussels, with the New York Times declaring them to make “the best fries in the world”.

Because it’s an outdoor kiosk, be prepared to wait in line.

But don’t worry too much, because many of the local bars will allow you to take your fries there to enjoy a nice cool beer with them.

Each portion is €3.30, or €3.70 for a large portion (going large is pretty much a no brainer), with sauces costing €0.90.

Now that’s some affordable traditional Brussels food!

11. Croquettes (at “Noordzee / Mer du Nord”)

amazing belgian restaurants in brussels, stack of croquettes, one that has been split open and is full of melted cheese

You can find many of the best Belgian restaurants in Brussels, right at the center.

One such place, which can be found on a busy street corner on Rue Sainte-Catherine, is Noordzee, also known as Mer du Nord (North Sea).

The owners and chefs at Noordzee take pride in delivering delicious fish and seafood dishes using the freshest catch of the day.

From North Sea fish and calamari to Canadian lobster, tuna, salmon, mackerel, haddock and freshly shucked oysters, there’s something for everyone at this lively finger food bar.

But the main things you should try that can sometimes be overlooked are the shrimp croquettes.

These deceptively small-looking treats are actually incredibly filling, and are some of the tastiest Belgian cuisine Brussels provides.

The Croquettes de Crevettes or Garnaalkroketten (depending on if you prefer French or Dutch) are €4 per piece and I believe they come best in pairs.

Order some up, give them your name, wait at the bustling standing tables and, as they say at Noordzee, when your name is called it’s time to feast!

12. Best Steak Tartare (at “Au Vieux St. Martin”)

where to go for delicious classic belgian food, plate with steak tartare surrounded by piles of spices, french fries and bread slices

Sitting on the west side of Place du Grand Sablon, a place where artists such as Hergé and René Magritte were known to frequent, is Au Vieux St. Martin.

This family-run establishment has been serving restaurant-goers since 1968 with high-standard Belgium dishes, but the most famous meal available here is even older.

Back in 1924, Joseph Niels – grandfather of the current owners – created the first recipe for the “Filet Américain”, or steak tartare as it is also known.

Because of this, of all of the Belgian cuisine Brussels has to offer, the steak tartare at Au Vieux St. Martin might have the most pedigree.

Served with the simple accompaniments of fries and handmade mayonnaise, this authentic Belgian food is packed with flavor.

Eating the Filet Américain here is like tasting Belgium’s culinary history.

You’ll be enjoying a dish that’s been a part of the fabric of the Brussels restaurant scene for a hundred years!

They serve some of the best traditional Belgian Food in Brussels, and you can’t go wrong no matter what you order.

Where to stay in Brussels

Why write about food as a travel blogger.

You might think about how a post about food and restaurant goes along with my topic of  eco-friendly and slow outdoor travel ?

Well, first of all, gastronomy is for me a crucial part of culture!

As I always try to get to know a foreign culture in all its facets, food plays an important role as it tells you a lot about the history and “character” of a society.

Secondly, all the featured locations in this post focus on slow cooking or using local and/or seasonal products.

If not possible, all of them try at least to investigate the origins and production standards of their prime material.

None of them does mass fabrication of their products.

Indeed a complex, creative, and even scientific world hides behind each of the famous Belgian food topics.

The masterminds behind fries, chocolate & beer are true scientists and experts in their niche.

Their creations have nothing in common with the industrial mass production that we, who devour chocolate in ordinary mortal countries, are used to eating.

Today I want to share with you my favorite must-eat places to eat in Brussels.

All of them don’t only serve top-notch creations, but they mostly stand and fall with the creative and passionate minds behind them.

Without any doubt, the creative brains behind the recent chocolate and beer creations, are fervently looking to innovate and liven up the traditional Belgian food segment.

Even if you only have  1 day in Brussels,  you need to taste as much food from Belgium as possible!

Whereas some of the featured locations are real Belgian institutions, others were only created recently and already gained fame all over the globe.

Don’t miss other foodie cities in Belgium like  Antwerp  or  Liege , the city with the 5 names.

Belgium or Brooklyn? 5 Bold New Places to Eat in Brussels.

Exciting young chefs wielding a palette of spices from places like Korea, Latin America and Morocco are turning the capital of Europe into a culinary upstart.

Diners inside a crowded, warmly lit restaurant, seen though a glass storefront framed with a tangle of brown vines underneath a white wall with two tinted windows.

By Alexander Lobrano

Brussels, long the realm of stuffy French restaurants packed with gray-flannel-suited diplomats, has suddenly gone bold and bright. Thanks to a crop of young chefs with iconoclastic ideas about flavor and sustainability, the city, in thrall to the rich sauces of Gaul for nearly two centuries, has emerged as one of the most exciting, and affordable, places to dine out in Europe right now.

These exciting talents are transforming the city’s old-fashioned bistros and cafes with spices from places like Korea, Latin America and Morocco, and “putting a vivid modern spin on homey local comfort food dishes,” explained Michel Verlinden, a Brussels food writer and restaurant critic for Le Vif Weekend , a major Belgian weekly. At the same time, they’re making the most of local produce like cabbage , carrots, endives and, bien sûr, brussels sprouts.

Brussels may be the capital of Europe, but it feels more like Brooklyn or Marseille gastronomically. Casual, creative and multicultural, it’s a city that’s equally at home with bulgogi and duck breast — even together in the same dish.

Here are five Brussels restaurants worth a visit.

Many of the most interesting new restaurants in Brussels aren’t found in Îlot Sacré , the high-rent heart of the city, but in outlying neighborhoods like St.-Gilles , an evolving but still more affordable area favored by young creatives.

This explains why the chef Sang Hoon Degeimbre chose this area for Anju , a new local favorite that explores his roots. Mr. Degeimbre was born in South Korea but adopted by a Belgian family as a baby. “Anju” is a Korean word that means food to be eaten while drinking alcohol. In addition to rice wine and Soju, Anju also offers a “sour Korean” beer brewed for the restaurant by the Brussels brasserie Illegaal , along with a great list of natural wines.

In the minimalist, taupe-colored dining room with K-pop illustrations on the walls, this means hearty comfort food. If starters like pajeon — pancakes filled with chopped vegetables and kimchi — or stir-fried octopus tentacles are impressively Korean, the technical prowess of Mr. Degeimbre’s team adds an element of Belgian haute cuisine to main courses like samgyetang (chicken in hot ginseng broth with rice and jujube) and duck breast bulgogi.

Desserts nod at Brussels, too: Bingsu , a milk-based shaved ice, is topped with speculoos cookies from Maison Dandoy , a bakery that dates to 1832, or hazelnut praline from the acclaimed Belgian chocolatier Pierre Marcolini .

73 Rue de la Source, St.-Gilles; starters from 13 euros, or about $14; entrees from €17.

Aster is a good example of how Brussels has cast off the cosseting bourgeois décor that used to characterize its best restaurants. When you arrive at this former pizza parlor, you walk right into the kitchen, where a balletic hive of cooks directed by the chef Túbo Logier is buzzing around several grills. Most guests are sitting at a high-top refectory table beneath dangling lightbulbs, eating and drinking from handmade ceramics instead of porcelain.

The largely plant-based and seafood tasting menu is served in a sequence of small plates, which change regularly. A recent dinner opened with a thrilling quintet of miniature hors d’oeuvres, including finely diced North Sea squid in fermented tomato water, a mille-feuille of smoked eel and pickled celeriac, trout with horseradish and fig, a nest of fried julienned leeks with a quail’s egg, and tiny mussels with winter truffles. A surprisingly bright first course of red and yellow beets with cod eggs and beeswax preceded a poached oyster with cabbage and jus de petit lait — or whey — which offered a simple but brilliant confluence of lactic flavors.

Another standout was langoustines prepared three ways: roasted with an umami-bomb condiment made from fermented vegetable scraps; in a milky bouillon with slivers of clementine and sliced button mushrooms; and chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg custard) garnished with meat and juices from the shellfish’s carapace.

Mr. Logier’s creativity didn’t relent as the meal concluded with two fascinating desserts: hazelnut ice cream with shaved Belgian blue cheese and apples braised in seaweed, and a sign-off mignardise of smoked white chocolate with sea bass eggs.

202 Rue Antoine Dansaert, Brussels; tasting menu, €80.

You might not expect such a disarmingly friendly welcome amid the Brutalist chic of Brussels’s arty Dansaert district , but that and the menu of contemporary Belgian comfort food at Kline might give you the feeling you’re in a countryside auberge.

Kline describes itself as “locally rooted and globally inspired,” which translates to dishes like brussels sprouts guacamole and braised pork belly with crispy-chile sauce and kimchi. The pork is traditionally raised and nourished with feed made of potatoes and corn, supplemented with olive oil and fresh hay, on a sustainable farm.

Starters like crunchy, round, deep-fried ham croquettes filled with béchamel and chopped Ardennes ham and red beet chutney, with pumpkinseed crackers, are made for sharing. Entrees are arranged under two headings: “Cold and Fresh” and “Hot and Heavy.” The selection changes often but may feature succulent dishes like North Sea scallops with a carrot emulsion and Belgian saffron, and roasted mushrooms with salsa verde and white mole. Desserts recently included a baked Belle de Boskoop apple with Belgian buffalo-milk mozzarella and miso, a provocative composition that lived up to the “Sweet and Sour” heading on the menu.

162 Rue de Flandre, Brussels; starters from €9.70; entrees from €9.80.

The son of Vietnamese immigrants, Linh Nam grew up in Liège and worked for Google in New York for seven years before returning to Belgium and opening Nyyó , a minimalist restaurant with cocoa-colored walls and rattan suspension lights. The menu reflects the triptych of culinary influences in Mr. Nam’s life — Belgium, Vietnam and the United States.

The Belgians love steak tartare — they call it filet américain — which probably explains the popularity of the beef tai chanh served here, with the difference that this variation on the dish is seasoned with a citrus vinaigrette, Vietnamese coriander, crushed peanuts and a quail’s egg yolk. The bahn mi burger riffs on the sandwich with a slice of chicken liver pâté and a beef patty in a toasted sesame brioche bun with aioli, homemade pickles, cilantro and a side of coleslaw, and in Linh’s Tacos, rice-flour shells have a filling of oyster mushrooms seasoned with aioli, coriander and scallion oil.

Finish up with a Liège Ca Phe Cafe, an espresso shot with condensed milk, vanilla ice cream, Cognac and cinnamon whipped cream — a sweet hybrid of Belgium and Vietnam.

38 Rue du Bailli, Ixelles; small plates from €10 to €19.

With its diversity of building styles, Brussels sometimes has the endearing vibe of an architectural thrift shop.

So, too, does Klok , the French chef Florent Ladeyn ’s airy restaurant with an open kitchen and big picture windows. Mr. Ladeyn is such an ardent locavore that he’s banned coffee (chicory is served instead), olive oil, lemons, chocolate, vanilla and almost any other ingredient that isn’t produced in Belgium or the north of France.

The menu at this casual spot changes often but may include starters like sweet-potato churros with crispy-chile oil, sea-snail croquettes, and brussels sprouts with fried onions and mimolette cheese. As is true of many new restaurants in Brussels, vegetarians are well cared for, with options including a delicious main course of grilled turnips and celeriac with beets, black garlic and a Flemish mole made with chicory. Mr. Ladeyn’s regionalism comes across in other main dishes, too, including quail à la Brabançonne — braised with endives in sour-cherry-flavored Kriek beer — and roasted French Mont des Cats cheese with fermented honey.

Though many dishes look like the hearty medieval food depicted on peasant tables in Bruegel paintings, their quiet worldliness is a perfect expression of how Brussels likes to eat today.

10 Place Rouppe, Brussels; lunch: starters from €5.50, entrees from €14; dinner: prix fixe only, €60.

The Grand-Place is close to many of the city's main attractions, including the St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral and the beloved Manneken Pis . Travelers love the Grand-Place for its stunning architecture. Recent reviewers suggested visiting during the day and night; during the day to see the details of the architecture, and at night to witness the vibrant life that takes over the square. However, a common complaint among tourists was the constant crowds (and higher prices), but that's to be expected at such a big attraction.

Local officials arrived as the former Brexit Party leader was finishing a speech at the event, which is also due to hear from Hungary's pro-Putin leader Viktor Orban and two Conservative MPs.

Politics Live: Police turn up at conference while Nigel Farage on stage

Emir Kir, the mayor of Brussels district Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, said he had issued an order banning the conference from taking place on Tuesday "to guarantee public safety".

He added: "In Etterbeek, in Brussels City and in Saint-Josse, the far-right is not welcome."

Tory MP Suella Braverman, who was sacked as home secretary last year, was also due to speak on Tuesday, as well as Conservative MP Miriam Cates.

Conference organisers said they were launching a legal challenge to Mr Kir's order, adding: "There is no public disturbance and no grounds to shut down a gathering of politicians, intellectuals, journalists, students, civic leaders, and concerned citizens.

"The police entered the venue on our invitation, saw the proceedings and the press corps, and quickly withdrew. Is it possible they witnessed how peaceful the event is?"

Police arrive at venue

Police officers arrived two hours into the event near the city's European Quarter to inform organisers it must close.

Officers did not appear to force the event to shut down and speeches continued.

Sky's political correspondent Darren McCaffery, who is at the scene, said police initially told the venue owner that if the building isn't evacuated they will start removing people.

However, they later said they "would not be dragging people out" and instead the tactic was to stop anyone new from entering the venue.

He said this is the third venue chosen by conference organisers, after two others cancelled at the last minute "due to political pressure".

Police 'shutting down ideology'

Mr Farage said the conference attendees were "respectable people" and "there's no protest of significance" happening against it.

"It's about closing down an ideology," he told Sky News.

Speaking to broadcasters as he left the venue, he said it would be closing down shortly and "I decided to make a discreet exit".

"I'm not going to stay when the police storm the place and get everybody out. I'm not going to get involved in a fight."

He added that he had "personally" experienced cancel culture in Brussels, such as restaurants and pubs refusing to service him, but now "global media" can see it happening.

Ms Braverman accused police of trying to "undermine and denigrate" free speech, saying she was there to talk about "issues that matter", including border security.

Rishi Sunak had faced pressure to block her attendance at the conference, with Labour shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth urging him to stop the former home secretary "giving oxygen to these divisive and dangerous individuals".

Downing Street later said it was "extremely disturbing" that the conference was shut down, citing freedom of speech.

National Conservatism is a global, right-wing movement which claims that traditional values are being "undermined and overthrown".

Under Boris Johnson's government in 2020, Conservative backbencher Daniel Kawczynski was reprimanded for attending a National Conservatism conference in Rome, with a Tory spokesman condemning the views of some other speakers, including Mr Orban.

Both Ms Braverman and Ms Cates addressed the National Conservatism conference in London last year, which was disrupted by protesters.

In her speech Ms Braverman claimed "it is not racist" to want control of our borders, while Ms Cates claimed that falling birth rates are "the one overarching threat.. to the whole of Western society" and that "cultural Marxism" was "destroying our children's souls".

Must-see attractions in Brussels

11 March 2022

Are you a first-timer in Brussels? Don’t worry, then: you're in good hands. We've put together a list of must-see attractions for you. This way, you can discover our capital through its best-known and most valuable treasures. An excellent introduction to the city!

An absolute must: the Grand Place, and the neighbouring galleries

Visiting Brussels without spending some time in the Grand Place is simply unthinkable. Here you’ll see the town hall (one of the most beautiful in the country), the Maison du Roi , which is home to the Brussels City Museum, and a series of private houses built at the end of the 17th century. The architectural richness of this square is simply overwhelming.

Just a stone's throw away from the Grand Place are the Royal Galleries , one of the oldest covered galleries in Europe, as beautiful by day as by night.

Manneken Pis: it’s not the size that matters

Since the 15th century, the  Manneken Pis  sculpture has adorned one of the public fountains that supply the city with drinking water. Over time, this wee little man became a kind of mascot, with the people of Brussels seeing him as a symbol of the local temperament, a unique combination of mischievous, irreverent and droll. A much coveted symbol, since the present statue is a copy. The original, which has been stolen several times, is now safely housed in the Brussels City Museum . Nearby, you can discover the vast wardrobe of Manneken Pis at the GardeRobe MannekenPis Museum.

Comic Strips in the streets: the Comic Strip trail

Brussels is the undisputed capital of the comic strip. The ninth art can be found everywhere, in shops, galleries, flea markets, festivals and more. And since 1991, the city's walls have been gradually covered with frescoes that pay tribute to the authors and their many heroes. You can turn down a street and come face to face with Tintin , Cubitus, Billy and Buddy , Blake and Mortimer or Corto Maltese . In all, there are more than 80 murals immersing locals, visitors and tourists alike in the wonderful world of comics.

An 18th century masterpiece: the Royal Quarter

The Place Royale, which was built on the ashes of the Coudenberg Palace , has retained its historical function as the “executive power district”. You’ll find the Royal Palace , the “office” of the Belgian King, at the Place des Palais, bordering the Place Royale. Opposite is the Parc de Bruxelles or Royal Park. The streets bordering the park are also part of the same neoclassical ensemble. For instance, on the other side of the park, you will see the  Palace of the Nation , the seat of the Belgian Parliament. At the Place Royale, with the statue of Godfrey of Bouillon at the centre, you’ll discover the Church of St. James on Coudenberg that resembles a Greco-Roman temple and a series of similar, harmonious mansions.

Culture with a view: the Mont des Arts

The Mont des Arts is the junction between uptown and downtown Brussels and offers a delightful view in all seasons. Below, you can sit in the sumptuous gardens that lead to the statue of Albert I. The “knightly king” faces his love, Queen Elizabeth, whose statue stands on the small Place de l'Albertine on the other side of the road. The Mont des Arts is home to the KBR , the country's main library, and the KBR Museum , which houses the library of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Archives & Museum of Literature (AML). On the other side of the Mont des Arts you’ll find the Brussels Congress Centre Square . Within walking distance you’ll also find major museums and cultural institutions such as Bozar , the BELvue museum and the Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM), to name but a few.

Spotlight on the masters: the Royal Museums of Fine Arts

As beautiful from the outside as it is from the inside, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium is a treasure trove of art. In fact, it is the most visited museum in Brussels. Its pluralised name reflects the fact that it contains several sites, covering a variety of periods and themes. Near Place Royale, you can visit the Old Masters Museum , dedicated to European painters from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and the popular Magritte Museum . Not far away, in Ixelles, you can admire the Wiertz and Meunier museums.

The Marolles district: authentic and diverse

This district is arguably the most authentic part of Brussels. Here, you can often still hear the Brusseleir dialect being spoken. The Marolles have it all, from traditional cafés to trendy bars, family-run establishments to stylish new art galleries. Place du Jeu de Balle is the beating heart of this quarter, where the " Vieux Marché ", a gigantic flea market, is held every day.

When size does matter: the Palace of Justice

The colossal Palace of Justice was inaugurated in 1883. It was designed by the architect Joseph Poelaert, and towers over the working-class district of the Marolles at a location where, for centuries, death sentences were carried out. At the time of its construction, this monument of 40,000 m2 of usable space was the largest building ever built and it’s still one of the largest courthouses in the world today. However, restauration works have tarnished its visual spectacle since the 1980s, to the point that scaffolding had to be erected to ensure the renovation... of the scaffolding already in place! (currently not accessible)

The Atomium: the landmark

Created for the 1958 World Fair, the Atomium with its 9 balls represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times!  (It is often mistakenly thought to represent an atom, but in fact each ball represents an atom of iron). The significance of this construction is to celebrate scientific discoveries and breakthroughs. Inside, you will find exhibitions and, most importantly, a stunning view of the Brussels-Capital Region from the top ball. Only a short walk away, embark on a tour of all Europe’s wonders in miniature, thanks to  Mini-Europe . Design lovers won’t want to miss the  Design Museum Brussels  only a stone’s throw away, born following the Atomium’s acquisition of a private collection.

A cultural crossroads: the European Quarter

Far from being a neighbourhood of grey and austere offices, the European Quarter combines European institutions with community life, parks, museums and more. In this district, you can attend plenary sessions in the Parliament's hemicycle and learn more about the Union thanks to the Parlamentarium , the House of European History and Experience Europe . You can also stroll through Léopold Park , a green space that recalls the days when the bourgeoisie moved in en masse from the bustling heart of the city. The district is also a landmark for fans of contemporary and Art Nouveau architecture.

Triumphal splendour: the Cinquantenaire

Built in 1880 to celebrate Belgium's 50th birthday, the Cinquantenaire attracts locals who appreciate its formal garden , history buffs who visit the Art & History Museum , car fans who flock to Autoworld and curious minds who are amazed by the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History . The latter, an often underestimated attraction, also offers access to the arches for a 360° panoramic view of the city.

Once upon a time: the Institute of Natural Sciences

The Institute of Natural Sciences tops the list of the world's best dinosaur museums, which is hardly surprising given that it houses Europe's largest dinosaur gallery. With rooms covering all aspects of life on earth, the evolution of human beings, urban species and the creatures of the seabed, the Museum has something for visitors of all ages. You can even take a behind-the-scenes look at the scientific institute to which it belongs.

The Horta House: quintessential Art Nouveau

Between 1898 et 1901, the architect Victor Horta built Horta House , which consisted of two buildings: his office and his personal home. This prolific pioneer of the Art Nouveau style was responsible for many architectural gems in Brussels. In his own house, which has been converted to a museum, you’ll find all the hallmarks of the Art Nouveau style. The house, now a museum, is one of the many Art Nouveau gems dotted along the streets of the capital .

The Koekelberg Basilica: house of the holy

Legend has it that the idea of building a national basilica in Brussels came to King Leopold II after a visit to the construction site of the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. The construction of the basilica started in 1905, only to be completed in 1970. Some see it as the largest Art Deco church in the world, others as an excessive and ostentatious folly. We’ll let you decide for yourself.
