A Tour of Edinburgh’s Seven Hills

View of Arthur's Seat from Blackford Hill

Seven Hills Tour in Edinburgh.

Seeing Edinburgh from above is my top recommendation for visitors to Edinburgh, and now you can easily ascend all seven of the city’s hills in just one morning with 7 Hills Tours . If you’d like to combine bonnie vistas and local facts with wee bursts of physical exertion, this is the tour for you.

You know you’ve successfully strayed away from Edinburgh’s classic tourist trail when you’re boldly going where many locals haven’t even been before. Of course, many of us have summited at least one of the most popular hills – or whichever is closest to where we live – but all seven?

Don’t think so .

(Unless you’re one of those inspirational fitness buffs who take part in the annual Seven Hills of Edinburgh Race , and complete the full circuit in a ridiculously fast time).

Admittedly, I had only ticked-off four out of seven hills prior to my experience on the Seven Hills of Edinburgh Tour . I’ve spent many a summer’s eve ascending Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill in a bid to work off my excessive food consumption. Either that, or I’ll contribute even more to my calorie intake by taking a bottle of wine or a picnic with me!

The views from the top of these hills are something special. The 360-degree panorama stretches from city to coast, with plenty wee peaks and architectural eye candy in-between. These stunning and satisfying scenes are more than enough incentive to stretch your legs on all seven hills. Let’s go!

What are Edinburgh’s seven hills?

Arthur’s Seat – in my opinion, the most striking and dominant feature on the Edinburgh cityscape.

Calton Hill – home to the iconic National Monument and Nelson’s Monument, and boasts the best views down the length of Princes Street.

Castle Rock – I’m sure you can guess which historic stronghold sits atop this rock!

Corstorphine Hill – accessed through a woodland walk in a residential area of Edinburgh. Lots of cute dog encounters are guaranteed.

Craiglockhart Hill – right next to the university where I studied, this hill has connections to health and wellbeing.

Blackford Hill – sits in a local Nature Reserve along with The Braids, and is home to the Royal Observatory.

The Braid Hills – offers the best perspective of all the other surrounding hills.

The Story Behind 7 Hills Tours.

Founder and Chief Tour Guide Moray Grigor (pronounced Murray) is a trained doctor, who has worked all over the Scottish Highlands and Islands, as well as overseas. He has always been something of an undercover entrepreneur however, and after experiencing a resurgence of business ideas every few years, he finally decided to set up his own tour company in 2018.

7 Hills Tours does exactly as it says on the tin, but that’s not all. Moray’s mission is to open a “secret door” to the city , by showing visitors a different side to Edinburgh , from the hilltops to the seaside suburbs. He has created a handful of themed tour itineraries which delve deeper into Edinburgh’s history and heritage. He also puts his own spin on walking tours of the Old Town, revealing some of Edinburgh’s unusual history and cultural quirks.

Check out The Storie & The Sang , In Search of Robert Louis Stevenson , Art Deco Buildings of Edinburgh and Historic Edinburgh, Newhaven and Leith . I live in Leith, so that tour is high on my list!

Moray Grigor, the founder of 7 Hills Tours

The Seven Hills Tour Experience.

The tour begins in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, where Moray sets the scene for the interesting and energetic morning ahead. Moray is a lovely, softly spoken man who effortlessly puts you at ease and makes you feel welcome. Castle Rock is an easy warm-up, before boarding a small, private vehicle to travel around the city, from hill-to-hill.

During the drives, and on the walks, Moray keeps you entertained with just the right amount of commentary. He mixes snippets of history, geology and local culture with his own memories of roaming the hills as a child; I always appreciate this personal and relatable approach . I’ve lived in Edinburgh all my life, and I’m a Scottish history geek, but I still learned lots of new facts about my home city.

View over the golf course from Corstorphine Hill

View from Corstorphine Hill

Moray has given each of the hills its own nickname, to reflect their unique attributes and historic connections . They were all formed by volcanic activity and glaciation , however they each have their own defining features. I really enjoyed taking in the new perspective on each hill , including the ones I’d already climbed. I spotted something different in the views from every hill and played my own version of ‘Where’s Wally?’ with familiar landmarks or places I frequent in the city.

All outdoor pursuits should be paired with a wee treat to reward your efforts , and this tour is no different. The Braid’s Hotel is a most pleasant pit-stop for a hot drink and some scones . Refreshments have been served in the hotel since 1886, when it was built as a watering hole/place to stay for golfers playing on the nearby Braid Hills golf course. The hotel is mentioned in Edinburgh’s own Muriel Spark’s ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’. A cool wee claim to fame!

The Braids Hotel, Edinburgh

To join this tour, you don’t have to be a hardcore outdoor enthusiast, however good mobility and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Most of the starting points are not at the very bottom of the hills, and some only take around 5 minutes to ascend. Arthur’s Seat is the most challenging of the bunch; it’s quite steep in parts, but still only takes around 15 – 20 minutes to climb.

The fresh air will awaken your senses, and the views are something you won’t forget.

Important Info:

  • The Seven Hills Tour costs £35 per person (including scones!)
  • Sensible shoes are an absolute must; ideally waterproof boots or training shoes at the very least.
  • A waterproof jacket with a hood is always advisable, as well as some extra layers. The wind and temperature at the top of Arthur’s Seat can feel quite different to that at the bottom.
  • The weather doesn’t always allow for a hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat.
  • Guests can opt out of Arthur’s Seat, or any of the other hills, and are welcome to relax in the vehicle instead.

Seven Hills of Edinburgh

The Seven Hills Of Edinburgh: A Quick Guide

Last Updated On 18th July 2021 By Lauren | Wild Lovely World

Edinburgh , the “Athens of the North” , is traditionally said to have been built on seven hills , in an allusion to the city of Rome which was also supposedly built on seven hills.

There are, in fact, well more than seven hills in Edinburgh which makes for a considerable debate over which hills are included and excluded from the seven.

However, the seven in this quick guide are widely considered to be the seven hills, as they are all within the main city centre area and have summits at a high prominence.

In addition, these seven are all listed on the sign on the summit of The Braid Hills (no. 3 below!), so I think it’s pretty safe to say these are the famous seven!

The Seven Hills Of Edinburgh

  • Arthur’s Seat
  • Blackford Hill
  • Braid Hills
  • Calton Hill
  • Castle Rock
  • Corstorphine Hill
  • Craiglockhart Hill

Seven Hills Race

Annually in June, there is a race called the “Seven Hills” in which participants aim to race up and down all these seven hills as fast as they can, which covers a distance of about 14 miles and 670.5m (2200ft) of ascent/descent.

Well, I’m not sure I’d be up for that, but all seven are really awesome to explore and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city.

Hiking The Seven Hills Of Edinburgh

I’ve climbed them all (a day at a time) and they make a lovely walk for a couple of hours in a morning or afternoon .

Getting to a higher elevation is also a great way to navigate and get orientated with the city and see it from different perspectives.

Each has it’s own charm, history, nature and surprises so take a look at what’s on offer and see what you fancy.

Quick Guide To The Seven Hills Of Edinburgh

I have written quick guides for all Seven Hills of Edinburgh. These quick guides will give you an overview of all seven hills , how to get there (including by public transport) , what to expect and why they’re so special .

1. Arthur’s Seat

arthurs seat hiking viewpoint edinburgh

Arthur’s Seat is perhaps the most famous and prominent of all the Seven Hills of Edinburgh.

The extinct volcano of Arthur’s Seat is very accessible from Edinburgh city centre. It is located near to Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament at the end of the Royal Mile.

A hike up Arthur’s Seat is a short, steep challenge. Those who attempt it will be well rewarded with beautiful views of Edinburgh and beyond!

Arthur’s Seat is very popular with visitors to Edinburgh. It is a nice place to go for a short walk.

2. Blackford Hill

fiachra descending blackford hill edinburgh

Blackford Hill is a really beautiful place to visit. Between Morningside and The Braid Hills, Blackford Hill together with the Braid Hills and the Hermitage of Braid comprises a 149 acre Local Nature Reserve called the “ Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Local Nature Reserve “.

The volcanic nature of the hill and Agassiz Rock are of geological and historical interest. Other highlights are the Blackford Pond and the Hermitage of Braid which is a lovely place to go for an interesting walk. Visit Hermitage House Visitor Centre to learn more about the area.

The Hermitage of Braid is particularly beautiful to visit in the autumn. Check out this post: Autumn In Edinburgh: The Best Places To See Colourful Leaves

Blackford Hill is also home to the Royal Obervatory of Edinburgh.

There are lots of walking tracks in this area and plenty to do for everyone. It’s well worth checking out!

3. Braid Hills

lauren jumping on the braid hills

The most beautiful of the Seven Hill of Edinburgh has to be The Braid Hills. The pretty hills are a lovely site when covered with the striking, bright yellow flower gorse.

There is a fantastic loop walk which circles The Braid Hills, making it a great spot for a short walk. From the walk, you’ll have excellent views of Edinburgh and beyond.

At the summit of the Braid Hills you will find the Seven Hills Of Edinburgh outlook. From here you can see all the Seven Hills of Edinburgh.

The Braid Hills are popular with horse riders and golf players with the bridal paths and golf course there too.

4. Calton Hill

Calton Hill edinburgh

A popular spot for taking the best views of Edinburgh is on the top of Calton Hill .

This short hill is just minutes from Princes Street in Edinburgh’s city centre.

There are several monuments on the top, as well as a new art gallery in the old observatory building.

The view of Edinburgh from Calton Hill is perhaps the most recognised image of Edinburgh.

It is a must do to climb the short walk up Calton Hill and see this for yourself!

5. Castle Rock

edinburgh castle spring

Castle Rock  is perhaps the most famous hill in Edinburgh as it is the home of  Edinburgh Castle *. However, most may be surprised to learn that this is also one of the seven hills – I certainly was!

The volcanic Castle Rock is actually the plug of an extinct volcano. Much of the sedimentary rock surrounding the volcanic rock has fallen away, leaving the black basalt exposed.

The rock has been a strategic position for a hill fort since the Iron Age. Edinburgh Castle has called Castle Rock home for around 900 years. The castle seems as if it has grown directly out of the rock itself!

Castle Rock is a dominating feature in Edinburgh. It has become an iconic landmark. You surely won’t miss it on your visit to Edinburgh!

6. Corstorphine Hill

DSC04506

Corstorphine Hill is somewhat of a hidden gem in Edinburgh. It is located in the west of Edinburgh near to Murrayfield Stadium (the home of Scottish Rugby) and the Edinburgh Zoo .

The beautiful Corstorphine Local Nature Reserve is largely a forested area. This makes it a great place to go for a walk in autumn. Check out my guide to autumn walks in Edinburgh here: Autumn In Edinburgh: The Best Places To See Colourful Leaves

There are several paths that wander through the woodland on Corstorphine Hill. Among other highlights, you’ll discover the historic Corstorphine Tower, a memorial to Sir Walter Scott.

Robert Louis Stevenson also loved Corstorphine Hill and took inspiration from it to write some of his stories.

Nearby to Corstorphine Hill is the Edinburgh Zoo. So don’t be alarmed if you see a zebra or hear a lion roar while walking on Corstorphine Hill!

7. Craiglockhart Hill

craiglockhart hill.JPG

Lastly, we have the Craiglockhart Hills . There are actually two hills that form the Craiglockhart Hills – one of Wester Craiglockhart and one is Easter Craiglockhart.

These hills are perhaps my least favourite of all the Seven Hills of Edinburgh, but they are still a nice place to go for a short walk.

Craiglockhart Pond is a scenic place to spot birds. Craiglockhart woods is a beautiful hide away from city life.

7 Hills Tour Company | Edinburgh

The 7 Hills of Edinburgh Tour

Hike the roof of edinburgh.

How would you like to see the seven most magnificent views of Edinburgh – but all in one fascinating and energetic morning? That feat is now entirely possible, we’ll be delighted to have your company as we do just that!

Meeting bright and early just below our spectacular Castle Rock, you’ll learn about how it and the rest of the 7 Hills were formed. Our luxury vehicle will then take you round the ring of the 7 Hills – Corstorphine, Craiglockhart, Braid, Blackford, Arthur’s Seat and finally Calton Hill, our finish point.

At each hill, you will have the chance to hike to the summit (5-20 minutes), to take in the view, get photographs, and hear more about what you see from your guide, who will give more commentary as we travel on Edinburgh history and culture, including themes as diverse as Robert Louis Stevenson, badgers, golf, the poets of the First World War, psychiatry, coffee and scones (with practical demonstration!), skiing, Oscar Wilde, LGBT Edinburgh, glaciation, astronomy, Celtic religion, Mary Queen of Scots, the Irish diaspora, the Napoleonic wars, religious rivalry through football….and lots more! Did we mention the complimentary coffee and scones?

In the distance you’ll be seeing the hills of Fife, the Borders and the far Trossachs, as well as the nearer Pentland Hills, which guard Edinburgh’s southern edge. You’ll also see the beautiful Firth of Forth with its uninhabited islands, and right down to the volcanic cone of North Berwick Law. Closer in you’ll see the landmarks of the city, both famous and lesser known, including the former hospital where the war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon jointly edited the house magazine!

Finally, at our destination point, Calton Hill, you’ll be among the great monuments of the ‘Scottish Enlightenment’. By the end of your energetic morning you’ll have the satisfaction of having accomplished something that even few locals have done, and you’ll know Edinburgh in a far deeper way than ever before. We can guarantee – there is no Edinburgh experience quite like it!

The seven hills of edinburgh

CORSTORPHINE HILL – to the west of the city, home to our  zoo and peaceful woodlands, topped by a historic tower.

CRAIGLOCKHART HILL – site of the former Hydropathic hotel and Craig House former psychiatric clinic.

BRAID HILLS – the ‘broad’ hills near the city’s southern edge, now a renowned golfing centre.

BLACKFORD HILL – home to Edinburgh University’s astronomy department and observatory.

ARTHUR’S SEAT – the king of Edinburgh’s hills, an extinct volcano with the spectacular rock sill of Salisbury Crags. (Please note that the Arthur’s Seat summit walk may be unavailable through bad weather at the guide’s discretion)

CALTON HILL – the end of our tour, and site of several key Edinburgh monuments.

Safety and health information

On the other, smaller hills, there are grassy or woodland paths to the top, and they are less high and steep than Arthur’s Seat. Generally the tour is not suitable for those with symptomatic chronic respiratory, cardiac or musculoskeletal conditions. If you would like to discuss suitability, please contact Moray at [email protected].

weather & clothing

Edinburgh gets its share of grey and rainy days! The tour can run in the wet, but you may cancel without charge up to 48 hours before the tour, so no-one should be forced to participate in poor weather!

In difficult weather the tour may sometimes not be able to offer the Arthur’s Seat walk, and in particularly bad/hazardous weather the tour may be cancelled completely by 7 Hills Tours, in which case a full refund will be given in every case, with no 48-hour rule.

We would recommend suitable footwear for hills, especially if you will be coming up Arthur’s Seat. Soles giving grip are essential for stony or grassy slopes, and surfaces can also be muddy at times. Please avoid shoes with high heels! If you like to use walking poles, please feel free to bring them along if you have them – we also have some sets to lend, and would recommend poles on our steeper hills.

Please dress appropriately for the weather – plus the hilltops can be surprisingly cold and windy even when the town is mild, so be ready with an extra layer and a waterproof if there is a chance of rain!
