History of Sanjay Gandhi National Park Mumbai

The history of Sanjay Gandhi National Park dates back to 4th Century BCE when ancient civilizations of Sopara and Kalyan had a 45-kilometre trade route between each other and kingdoms of these trade capitals exchanged trades with Greece and Mesopotamia.

The trade route between Sopara and Kalyan passed through Kanheri Caves which was a site of learning as well as pilgrimage for Buddhists. The caves were sculpted out of one single basalt rock by Buddhist monks between 9th and 1st Century BCE.

What was earlier known as Krishnagiri National Park during the pre- independence era (1942), was later known as Borivali National Park in 1974 and was spread across an area of 20.26 square kilometres only. This was done in 1942 under the Bombay National Park Act.

However, later on the park area was expanded twice. Once in 1976 and later again in 1981. During the expansion of 1981, the area that came under the National Park measured 82.25 Square kilometre.

The park was named as Sanjay Gandhi National Park, after the elder son of ex- Prime Minister of India, Ms. Indira Gandhi in 1996 and the park area was further expanded to 103 square kilometres simultaneously.

Exploring Buddhist Caves

Where to camp, where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, sanjay gandhi national park.

Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of six national parks in Maharashtra state. The park is an amalgamation of forest and agricultural land that has been carried out over multiple decades (it was initially formed under the Bombay National Park Act in 1950). The site may not be as large or exotic as some of the top national parks in India , but its luring basalt rock formations and accessibility make it very appealing. It's the only national park in India that lies within city limits, and it's full of more than 100 ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves, a lake, and a lion and tiger safari zoo. The park is a great destination for families to enjoy nature amid the bustling city center, complete with plenty of activities to keep both adults and kids entertained.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers 104 square kilometers (65 miles) and is divided into three areas: a buffer area, a tourist area, and a core area. There are seven hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty found within the core area. Two prominent temples are located inside the park—the Trimurti Digambar Jain temple, complete with three towering white statues of Lord Adinath, Lord Bahubali, and Lord Bharata, and the Mahadeo Shiva temple near the Kanheri Buddhist Caves.

Those Kanheri Caves are a park highlight and are worth a visit on their own. Scattered throughout a hillside and hand-carved out of volcanic basalt rock, the caves contain ancient carvings, Buddha statues, and prayer halls. Just look out for the monkeys while exploring.

The Vanrani (Forest Queen) Toy Train takes visitors on a scenic 20-minute joyride around the park. And the lion and tiger safari (which contains two lions and four tigers kept in enclosures) provides a trip highlight for families with children.

You can also paddleboat Vihar and Tulsi Lakes, and learn about the different species of resident wildlife through one of the Nature Information Center's guided activities. The center's butterfly garden is also a popular park destination.

Best Hikes & Trails

Hiking Sanjay Gandhi National Park's trails take visitors out of a city deemed "the financial capital of India" and into what feels like the remote wilderness. Seven designated nature trails meander into the Kanheri foothills, through varied ecosystems and up to 1,000 feet above sea level. However, it's not possible to hike along most of the nature trails without being accompanied by a naturalist, guide, or tour agency, so you'll need to plan ahead for an authentic experience.

  • Shilonda Trail : This gently meandering trail winds its way from the low-lying scrubland into a dense evergreen forest. Once an area occupied by a tribal settlement, nature has reclaimed this space, allowing trekkers to explore the tundra and wade through refreshing crystal clear forest streams.
  • Malad Trail Line : Another easy trail, the Malad Trail Line takes you past a manmade watering hole frequented by the park's wildlife. Along the route, you will see several deciduous trees, including teak, red silk cotton, palash, Laburnum, and bamboo. The trail ends at the suburb of Malad, where the forest and city meet.
  • Highest Point Trail : This invigorating trek starts at the Bamboo Trail trailhead and then crosses streams and negotiates rocky hillsides to the highest point in the park. From here you get a panoramic view of all three of the park's lakes against the backdrop of the city.
  • Nagla Block Trail : This trail is considered the park's most rewarding. However, it's situated in a remote northern part of the park. The trail entrance starts outside the park at the nature center in Sasupada Village, and then ends on the banks of Vasai Creek. It's a hilly hike through a pristine area suspected to be the home of a tigress, and is frequented by butterfly and bird enthusiasts. This trail doesn't require booking a guide in advance, but before you venture out on your own, you'll need to pay an entry fee at the forest office in the village.

The Kanheri Buddhist Caves date back to the 1st century BC, when a wide trading route brought Buddhism to the region. Kanheri was a major settlement for Buddhist learning up until the 10th century AD, and contained the biggest Buddhist university in western India. The subsequent decline in Buddhism in the region resulted in the abandoned caves, which have now become a tourist attraction.

Cave 3 is among one of the most impressive caves, as it contains the largest number of intact carvings—including two imposing Buddha statues—and one of the biggest prayer halls in India. If you continue up to the hilltop from the caves on the Kanheri Upper Trail, you're rewarded with a panoramic view of Mumbai.

There is one campground located within the grounds of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, offering stays in tents, pine huts, and guest houses. Five permanent safari tents provide a comfortable night's sleep, as well as protection from the elements and wildlife. Each tent comes complete with bedding, blankets, fold-down canvas windows, a porch, and a picnic spot; a few tents are air-conditioned. Community bathrooms are available on site, and organized hikes and activities can be booked with your stay.

Several lodging options encircle Sanjay Gandhi National Park. You can stay right in the heart of Mumbai, experiencing both the park and the metro scene, or choose a budget hotel on the outskirts of town or an upscale business-savvy stay in Thayne.

  • Royal Hometel Suites : Located along the Western Express Highway in Mumbai, the Royal Hometel Suites is just a few miles west of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, making it a good home base. The hotel offers five different categories of rooms and suites, as well as three dining options: a restaurant that serves Indian, Asian, and continental cuisine, a bar that serves custom drinks and food, and a lobby lounge with fast food, beverages, and snacks. When you're not exploring the park, relax by the pool, take advantage of the hotel's complimentary Wi-Fi, or get in a workout at the on-site fitness center.
  • Hotel Samadhan : Hotel Samadhan is a budget hotel located in the Mumbai suburb of Kandivali, just a three-minute walk from the rail station. Choose from a room with one double bed, a flat-screen television, and air conditioning, or a deluxe room with a king-size bed, flat-screen television, air conditioning, a bathtub and shower, and a dining area. Airport pickup, free parking, and a laundry service are available with your stay.
  • Fortune Park Lake City : An upscale business hotel situated on the eastern side of the park in Thayne, Fortune Park Lane is surrounded by the picturesque hills of Yeoor and Parsik, as well as 30 lakes. This hotel offers three styles of rooms: a standard room with a king and twin bed, a Fortune Club room with multiple king beds, and a suite with a king bed, a separate living area, and a spacious bathroom. Two restaurants are located on site and offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park lies between Borivali, Thane, and Palgar on the northern outskirts of Mumbai. The park's main entrance is on the Western Express Highway in Borivali East, 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the city center. The nearest airport is 15 kilometers away in Mumbai and most hotels offer free transport from the airport.

The closest Mumbai railway station is in Borivali on the Western Line . This is the best way to access the park, as you can hire a rickshaw or taxi from the station to take you to the park's entrance. If you're driving, access the main entrance from the Borivali East exit off of the Western Express Highway.

A shuttle bus runs between the park entrance and Kanheri Buddhist Caves, with departures every hour (except during lunch and on Mondays). Separate tickets are required to visit the caves and need to be purchased from the ticket office near the cave entrance. Private vehicles (including bicycles) can be taken inside the park, after paying an entry fee. Having your own transportation once inside allows you to fully experience all the park has to offer.

  • Sanjay Gandhi National Park opens early in the morning, at 5.30 a.m., for walkers. It remains open for day visits from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. There is a day-use fee and children under five are free.
  • The park is managed by the government, so expect some inconveniences. For instance, all tourist attractions and facilities (except Gandhi Tekdi and the Kanheri Buddhist Caves) are closed over lunch from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and also on Mondays. Information and facilities for tourists are lacking, and many of the park's sparse signboards are written in Marathi (the state's language), making directions unclear.
  • Food options are limited inside the park. There's a canteen with a basic vegetarian Indian menu. You can also buy snacks and water from enterprising locals.
  • In an effort to keep the park litter-free, you'll need to pay a refundable deposit to bring plastic water bottles and food items inside. Bags are usually searched by park officials at the entrance.
  • Bicycles can be rented inside the park, or at Harry's Bicycle Rental Shop , situated 500 meters before the park entrance. You'll need to provide an appropriate photo ID when renting a bike, and if you visit on a weekend, expect a long wait, as the demand to rent is high.
  • Anyone caught venturing off the park's main roads and designated areas will be fined 25,000 rupees.
  • If you prefer not to hire a hiking guide, the Bombay Natural History Society organizes guided walks on the weekends.
  • For the most peaceful experience, visit the park during the week, as it gets very crowded on weekends, especially on Sunday.

Sanjay gandhi national park, mumbai overview.

Squeezed between the two suburbs of Mumbai and Thane, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is ideal for picnics and weekend getaways offering respite from the chaos and buzz of the city. Famed to be one the most liked national parks, visitors throng in thousands to spot Leopards, Macaques, Boars, Lions, Flying fox, Kingfisher, Sunbirds and a significant number of butterflies here. Kanheri caves, which are more than two thousand years old are also a major tourist attraction inside the park premises. The caves have been carved out of the rocky cliffs.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, previously known as the Borivali National Park covers approximately 20% of Mumbai's geographical area and is home to a staggering thirteen hundred species of flora and more than five hundred species of fauna respectively. Covering an area of 104 square kilometers, it is one of Asia's most visited National Parks with over 2 million visitors every year. The park is also said to be the largest park in the world located within city limits. There are two artificial lakes within the forest thriving with crocodiles and migratory birds all year. The lakes supply drinking water to the city. The park was first introduced in 1974 and helps to have a change from the usual sights, attractions, and rush of the big city. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is known for its evergreen dense forests, bird population, butterflies, and the small population of tigers.

The meals were super delicious. Our natural historian was knowledgable sharing with us about the experience and stories of the place properly, The hike went excellent and easy as I thought. The Kanheri Caves look stunning and breathtaking, which impossible to built like the old-time ancestor. Breakfast near the water streams was terrific and, the hiking towards the highest point too was easy and, from there you would get to see and experience about the beauty of mother nature on which the natural historian would tell about the history of the place, End of the journey was tiring and satisfied.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park | Should You Visit and Insider Tips to Make it Count

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of the places locals keep planning to go to but never land up going. I know because I was one of them. The park is known to be the green lungs of Mumbai and the only large pocket of green, comparable to Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London . But is it worth going there for a local or visitor? And what are the activities to do inside? Is there an easy way to see the famous Kanheri Caves inside which does not involve braving the crowds? YES, to all of them. Read on to see how to plan the perfect day trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Borivali National Park, also known as Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), is located in Borivali, North Mumbai, and spans 104 square kilometres. Established in 1969, it’s a protected area within the city’s limits, which was built as a catchment area to preserve the lakes that are a part of the park— Tulsi and Vihar. Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lakes meet the water needs of the city’s population. The park houses a variety of flora and fauna, including 274 bird species and 40 mammal species. It’s famous for the Kanheri Caves, an ancient Buddhist site with rock-cut caves. The park also offers several treks and trails, and other recreational opportunities. Additionally, it serves as a critical green space, aiding in the conservation of biodiversity amidst the urban environment. The park is also well-known for its 50 sneaky leopards that only come out after the people are gone.

Timings and Costs

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is closed on Mondays . On the rest of the days, it is open from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM for morning walkers with monthly or annual passes. For day visitors, it is open from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Should You Visit?

Depends on who you are and what you want to do, really.

If you are a local who is looking to do an offbeat weekend activity and get some exercise , there’s plenty to choose from. The park offers morning treks and cycling routes. The treks are of easy to medium difficulty, inexpensive (between INR 400-1000) and can be done by whole families. There are safari and toy train rides—although neither looked very appealing to me. Overall, it’s a good place for a picnic and recreation.

However, on weekends, SGNP gets very crowded. Buses, cars, and bikes ply from the main gate to the caves and as they try to skirt the throngs of walkers (in thousands), they honk. A lot of trash also gets collected because of the crowds. There are zillions of cyclists, too. So, not the peaceful oasis you might be looking for. Weekday mornings are better to enjoy the park’s greenery, get some respite from the humdrum of life, and sneak a visit to the Kanheri Caves. It’s also a good workout.

If you are a visitor to Mumbai and only have a limited time in Mumbai , just visit the Kanheri Caves. Take a tour to trek up early in the morning with a guide , and see Kanheri Caves. However, this is a half-day exercise and can be skipped in favour of other exciting things to do in Mumbai .

Sanjay Gandhi National Park | Plan the Perfect Day Trip

Kanheri Caves

Built in the 1st century CE, Kanheri is a collection of 109 caves spread over half a kilometre located in Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The name Kanheri, also known as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri in ancient text, translates to mean “black mountain” (Krishna means “black” and Giri means “mountain”) and is named after a black basaltic stone. The caves have: (1) A chaitya , that comprises a sanctum, verandah and outer courtyard approached through a flight of steps with flanking water cisterns on either side, and (2) viharas , that are architecturally monotypic but variable with one or multiple cells, a verandah with two or more pillars in front, and an open courtyard with rock-cut benches along the walls. The cave numbers 3, 11, 34, 41, 67, 87 and 90 are most important. An excellent example of the only sculpture in India of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara excavated outside cave number 41. There are over 100 inscriptions in the caves revealing the names of donors and patrons of the caves which show monks. goldsmiths, traders and many political and administrative officials had given donations to caves, cisterns, tanks, staircases, benches, niches, pillars, paths and walls at Kanheri.

Wonder why it’s not a UNESCO World Heritage site yet. It’s a pretty cool place.

Open every day from 9 AM – 5 PM . The entry fee is INR 25 for Indians and INR 300 for foreigners. Free admission to visitors below 15 years. Remember, in addition, you’d need to have paid the entry fee for SGNP and the bus fee to get to the caves. Video filming costs INR 25.

Buses ply from the main gate of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the caves which take 15 min (6 km) and cost INR 13. Bus timings | Morning – 9.00 am to 12.30 pm | Afternoon – 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. You can also cycle close (park a 10-minute uphill walk away) to the caves. (INR 80 for 2 hours)

The Best Way to Visit

One of the best ways to see Kanheri Caves is by going on a trek organised by The Sanjay Gandhi National Park , starting from the caves. The treks commence at 7 AM, which is before the park officially opens at 7:30 AM. If you are part of the trek, you will receive an early entry, whereas the caves become accessible to the public at 9 AM. This means you get to see the caves all empty, with plenty of time and opportunity to take pictures and admire the carvings. You can also do this when you have more time on your way back. The good news is that the treks are quite easy to do.

I went on the Gaimukh trail in the monsoon, which passed through the caves with the trek leader telling us about them, and we also passed some interesting nature points around. In monsoons, it was an exhilarating (albeit slippery) experience. Plus you get to see the caves and Mumbai from different vantage points as you walk on upwards. The Gaimukh Trek cost me INR450 (duration: 7 AM to 11 AM). SGNP organises other treks, too.

One of the highlights of the Gaimukh Trek is reaching a point where you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Mumbai in all its serene beauty. From this vantage point, you can see the stunning Vihar, Tulsi, and Powai lakes stretching out in front of you, surrounded by lush green tree tops. It’s hard to believe that you’re still in Mumbai when you stand there. Take a deep breath and savour the moment, because it’s not often that you’ll find such clean, oxygen-rich air in the city.

SGNP also makes for a relaxing visit if you are in Mumbai on a long layover and have seen everything else.

  • First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
  • From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
  • I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
  • I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
  • And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park Introduces Tiger Safari After 5 Years; Plans For Lion & Leopard Safari

The heart-pounding moment of spotting a tiger in the wild is an experience like no other. The excitement is not just limited to tiger sightings. In addition, safaris allow visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty and diversity of the ecosystems. Good news for wildlife enthusiasts! After five years, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park tiger safari in Mumbai is back in operation.

Tiger Safari Begins Again In Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Madumalai Tiger Reserve

State forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar officially reopened the tiger safari at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on Wednesday after it had been closed for the previous five years. After a chain link fence fell in 2016, the 20-hectare safari area was locked, giving guests access to just one hectare.

According to an article published by Hindustan Times, rebuilt at a cost of ₹5.5 crore, the revamped safari would feature new cages, a crawl space, and a primary and secondary safari. There are five female tigers, including a juvenile, and two male tigers in the tiger enclosure. The 20 hectares will now be enclosed, giving the tigers a place more like their native habitat. This park was opened to visitors in 1998.

Due to the large number of leopards that are either abandoned by their parents, imprisoned in different metropolitan areas, or have turned into maneaters, the forest service is also requesting permission to establish a leopard safari. This will take up 20 hectares as well.

As per the article, the state forest minister also introduced six 30-passenger electric vehicles for use on safari and excursions to Kanheri Caves. They will depart from the SNGP main gate. Since the National High-Speed Rail Corporation used the Tungareshwar forest area and a portion of Sanjay Gandhi National Park for the bullet train, the company donated the vehicles. Five buggies were also donated by the company. The nine buses in the second instalment will arrive shortly as well.

There is now one male and one female lion on the lion safari, but SGNP officers are also revamping it. The Central Zoo Authority of India (CZMA) has requested that the state forest department expand the safari to a total of 20 hectares from its current 12-hectare footprint, as it does not meet CZMA regulations. One more pair of lions from Gujarat is being obtained by the state forest department for the safari.

These safaris provide an unparalleled adventure that goes beyond the thrill of spotting a wild cat. So, when are you heading to this safari?

Sanjay Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve

There are plenty of reasons that make the Sanjay National Park one of the most beautiful wildlife-spotting destinations in central India. Its diversity of flora and fauna is adored by nature and biota enthusiasts. The green region features sharp cliffs, water bodies, valleys, hills, and deep canyons. The Guru Ghasidas National Park, which is situated in Chhattisgarh, shares its jungle with Sanjay National Park.

Furthermore, the park comprises various rivers and ponds that provide the birds and animals with water. You can get the best view of the park in the park itself, near the Banas River. The untapped wildlife heaven of Sanjay National Park and Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary falls in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh. Together, they cover 831 km2. Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve, which is known for its rare and exquisite species of flora and fauna, is covered with sal forest and is home to 34 species of freshwater fish, 152 species of birds, 32 species of mammals, 11 species of reptiles, and 3 species of amphibians. Also, the forest is popular for its rich biodiversity, which makes it one of the perfect habitats for animals like the tiger, sloth bear, Chital, Nilgai, Chinkara, Barking Deer, leopard, Porcupine, Jackal, Fox, Jungle Cat, Hyena, Indian Wolf, Indian Python, Four-horned Antelope, Dhole (a wild dog), and Sambar (restricted to steep terrain and in very small numbers) that have been discovered.

Mohan, the famous white tiger, had been captured in what is now the Bastua range of the Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary on May 26, 1951. Mohan was found hiding in a cave near the Pankhora nullah. For almost two decades, Mohan remained in captivity, siring virtually all the current world population of white tigers.

Wildlife can be best explored while experiencing a safari. The Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve is best visited between October 1 and June 30. Safari is closed during the monsoon amid the rain disturbance. To book a jungle safari at the park, Click here .

It is recommended that you keep your zoom lenses in your bag when packing for a Jeep Safari in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Obviously, you would not want to miss the chance to capture some jaw-dropping shots. Who knows, your luck could lead you to see a yawning tiger or a playing bear?

Whether it is sunrise or sunset, Parsili is all set to awe you with its beauty.

It is always a good idea to explore and around a travel destination. Parsili is a tranquil town, located 10 km away from all the hustle and bustle in a picturesque environment. It is situated near the Banas River and has a 4 km-long soft sand bed alongside it. You can plan your stay at Parsili Resort to enjoy the place to the fullest. The MPT Parsili Resort provides you with exquisite luxury blended with a comfortable stay.

Alongside the adoring vistas that surround this property, you can also take up a barefoot walk, which is a unique experience in itself. Known for its soft and moist sand bed, you can also experience a barefoot walk in the water. You can walk miles together with your loved ones or simply sit by the river's bedside to feel the peace within. Every experience at this place is so aesthetic that you can't miss flaunting it on your Instagram feed.

The tourist trail of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Parsili is a good option to explore with your loved ones and your family this winter. There are many ways you can reach the park. The Varanasi airport at 275 km, the Prayagraj airport at 280 km, and the Jabalpur airport at a distance of 280 km are almost equidistant from the destination. You could also consider flying into Khajuraho Airport, which is 270 kilometers away from Sanjay National Park. From the airport, you can hire a taxi to reach the park in the Sidhi district of MP. It is very well connected by NH 39 and other roads.

Now is not the time to wait for the beautiful winters to end; instead, pack your hoodies, shoes, and camera, and book your tickets to the Heart of Incredible India. Would you take a risk of missing out on the amazing safari along with the riverside walk following the sunset?

Sanjay Gandhi National Park: The Jungle in Our Backyards

Sanjay Gandhi National Park

One cool autumn weekend, we decided we wanted to revisit Sanjay Gandhi National Park : the one real slice of wilderness on the borders of Mumbai’s concrete jungles, known commonly as Borivali National Park. Through this travel blog, you’ll get to know about the things to do at SGNP.

One doesn’t expect much from a forest reserve that lies adjacent to the country’s highly industrialised commercial capital but SGNP broke through our reservations with its large expanses of untouched nature, a stunning tiger sighting and the marvellously hewn Kanheri Caves.  Find out about other things to do in this travel blog.

Kanheri Caves at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

It wasn’t our first visit here. Like every native of Mumbai, we had been here at least twice in our childhoods but our memories were vague, overlapping at points with Jijamata Udyan a.k.a. Byculla Zoo, situated in South Mumbai. So, the only place that evoked concrete remembrances was the Kanheri Cave complex. And even then, it came as a surprise that there were 109 different caves in the mountainside, awaiting our awed exploration.

A vihara prayer hall at Kanheri Caves

SGNP is best explored on foot or on bicycles, if you have the stamina for it. But families tend to drive down. So did we.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Narrow paths enveloped in silence and woods on either side greeted us as we drove by. Now and then, the muted shadows of the morning sunshine were invaded by a bunch of monkeys or goats, foraging for food and adventure. It was hard to believe that we were merely half an hour away from the sounds and odours of the city. And the deeper we ventured, the more natural it felt, to be a part of this jungle in our backyards.

Monkeys at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Kanheri Caves

We parked more than a kilometre away from the caves to allow ourselves the opportunity to walk through the forest. Picturesque detours tempted us to stray from our route and we decided to return another time and do just that. But on that day, we walked straight ahead to Kanheri Caves, the morning coolness and the rustling leaves keeping us happy company.

Buddhist statues at Kanheri Caves

Kanheri, derived from ‘Krishnagiri’ or ‘black mountain’, was once a prominent Buddhist settlement and the caves were originally viharas , serving as the living, studying and meditating quarters of the Buddhists. Many of the caves are lined with Buddhist inscriptions, lofty statues with intricately carved features and paintings that remain unfinished in some caves. According to the government website, Kanheri has the largest number of rock-cut cave monuments in a single hill.

Kanheri Caves at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

When we ran our hands along the walls of the first cluster of caves, we were reminded of Elephanta Caves, a ferry ride away from Gateway of India. But as we proceeded along rocky uphill climbs and treacherous stairways in the mountainside to feast our eyes upon soft brown chaityas and water cisterns, any signs of resemblance slipped away. In any case, the caves on Elephanta Island are Hinduism-inspired, with several paying homage to Lord Shiva. It’s amazing how every religion, community and dynasty has broken down a different frontier of art to create something of otherworldly, magnificent proportions.

It’s both humbling and immensely uplifting to witness first hand, the marvels that can be found at the confluence of nature, intelligence and creativity.

Steep staircases hewn into the mountainside

It was exhausting after a point to try and acquaint ourselves with every one of those 109 caves; so we skipped a few here and there. But our favourite clusters of caves were the ones beyond immediate reach, flanked by wilderness, fewer crowds and steep short-cuts in case you had little time to spare. We enjoyed peering at the sunlight streaming in through little holes in the walls and the way our voices ricocheted off the shadowy interiors of these bastions of time.

Tiger Safari at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Once we’d had our fill of the caves, we decided to go on a tiger safari. These fifteen-minute joyrides in packed buses are notorious for their fleeting and fruitless nature but on that particular morning, we got really lucky. Our first sighting was nothing to write home about – it was a sleepy tiger locked inside a cage, probably a fixture in every safari conducted at SGNP. But a little way ahead, the bus suddenly came to a stop and a hushed silence fell over the group as the guide urged us to be quiet.

Tiger at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

And then, everyone scrambled to reach the front of the bus because right outside was a large, healthy male tiger, sitting in the middle of the road and watching us curiously.

People jostled each other and hands reached for phones and cameras in a frenzy to capture that regal sight but we remained rooted to the spot, riveted by the sight of the animal that had eluded us on countless safaris through the forests of Madhya Pradesh.

Tiger at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Fortunately, Mohit managed to fulfil the mandatory task of photographing the tiger. Presently, the majestic animal rose and took a leisurely walk around the bus. In a comical sweep of movement, the crowd rushed back to the rear of the bus. With a final wondering pause, the tiger turned his back on us and walked away into the forest.

The cheer in the bus was palpable as we returned and in sheer contrast to the bored faces of the unfortunate souls who had alighted before us. Trust us when we say, you don’t have to ask to find out whether a person saw a tiger or not. It shows in the exhilaration in their eyes and the bounce in their step.

Lake and Boating at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Boating at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Next, we proceeded to the lake and boating area, a favourite with families and children. But en route, we chanced upon a serene pond with a great bough arching across its olive expanse. And we had to sit by its banks.

Pond at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

An idyllic pink bridge had been constructed across the far end, making for a picture postcard sight.

Pond at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

There is also a garden adjacent to the boating area, where the statue of a tiger stands atop the garden name carved out of foliage, offeing some solace to those who didn’t see the real thing.

Garden at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

It was lunch time by then and we decided to head back to the concrete jungle we called home. If you plan a trip here, come as early as you can and be prepared to fork out a hefty fee for bringing vehicles inside. Other attractions include a toy train that passes over the deer park, a Jain temple and various walking trails. Also enquire about camping facilities if you fancy spending the night in the park.

To reach Sanjay Gandhi National Park, walk down from Borivali railway station or take a rickshaw. You can also drive down from Western Express Highway. The park opens at 7:30 am and shuts at 5:30 pm.

Its one hidden treasure inside of Mumbai, lesser known to the crowd. Kanheri Caves reveal a lot about Buddhism and their architectural knowledge.

The History of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Its history is long and goes back to the 4th Century BC. Two ports traded with ancient civilizations like Greece and Mesopotamia were Sopoara (in ancient India) and Kalyan (in modern India).

This forest was part of the 45 km land route that connected these ports. The Kanheri Caves were an important Buddhist learning center and pilgrimage site in the middle of the park.

Buddhist monks carved them between the 9th and the 1st centuries BCE. They were formed from a huge basaltic rock outcropping.

In the pre-independence period, the park was called ‘Krishnagiri National Park. The park’s area was just 20.26 square miles at that time.

The park was increased to its current size in 1969 by acquiring various reserve forest properties adjacent to it.

The area was administered by a separate unit of the Forest Department, the ‘Borivali National Park Subdivision.’ In 1974, Krishnagiri National Park was established. Later, it was renamed “Borivali National Park.”  It was renamed ‘Sanjay Gandhi National Park in 1981 to honor Sanjay Gandhi (son of ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi).

Flora and Fauna

Forest habitat is the dominant habitat type. An estimated 1300 flowering plants are found in SGNP. The majority of this forest is a southern mixed-deciduous forest. The Tectona and Terminalia dominate it. This is especially evident in the lowlands and on the hillsides.

A few pleasant surprises in the National Park include small herds of Sambhars, darting Barking Deer, and a surprise encounter with a Black-naped Hare.

However, nothing can match the feeling of fear, terror, and goose-pimply when confronted with a large Leopard. This encounter is possible because of the high density of Leopards in this wilderness.

It’s possible to see a rare Porcupine or a Palm Civet, both rarely seen these days, and even encounter a Striped Hyena. This makes it memorable. Only a few people can see the rare Four-horned Antelope or the shy Mouse Deer.

The monkey species include the Bonnet Macaque (an introduced species), the Rhesus Macaque (an introduced species), and the vegetarian Hanuman langur, or leaf monkey. The park’s largest of 17 bat species is the Indian flying fox.

The National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers. The National Park is home to many bird species, including the small Tickell’s flowerpecker (an Indian bird) and Sunbirds (an old-world equivalent of the hummingbirds).

Reptiles and Butterflies

This forest contains beautiful birds, including the Paradise Flycatcher and the mysterious Trogon.

Crocodiles at Tulsi Lake, Monitor Lizards, and Pythons are examples of the reptile world. The park also has smaller reptiles that add to its wonder.

Naturalists will enjoy the invertebrate world, including spiders and crabs, signature spiders, black wood spiders, and giant wood spiders with their huge webs in monsoon.

Many Mantis, Silk cotton bugs, and Beetles exist in the insect world. There are many beautiful butterflies to be found in the Butterfly World.

Things to Do in Borivali National Park

1. mini train.

Van Rani

Van Rani is a Mini train that operates in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The name is derived from Hindi, with ‘Van’ meaning Jungle and ‘Rani’ meaning Queen.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park has many attractions, i.e., Jungle, Park, Caves, Zoo, Mini Train, River, etc.

One of the famous attractions for children is the Van Rani mini-train which has around 20 to 25 seats. It is a hit among children.

This mini train is an exciting experience for children who get excited to see the toy-like train, which would take them on a Jungle Safari Ride. This ride lasts for around 20 min.

The Van Rani takes tourists around Borivali National Park on a narrow-gauge train track. It covers around 2.4 km and moves inside the jungle, giving you a view of the trees, animals, waterfalls, and birds, and you will enjoy the greenery all around you. Not just children but even adults enjoy this experience.

The train operates every 30 min and covers two major attractions. The Van Rani is open from all sides with a roof on the top; this helps you get a closer experience with nature.

2. Tiger and Lion Safari

You can make your visit memorable by watching the big cats at the Tiger and Lion Safari inside a vehicle. These large safari cages allow visitors to view these big cats in a controlled environment and an open car. The wildlife interpretation center at the ticket counter allows us to understand wild animals and their natural habitats better.

Deer in Sanjay Gandhi National Park

The artificial water lake is very close to the main entrance gate. This allows you to use the pedal boat and paddle on the picturesque, refreshing lake created for this purpose. You can book a boat ride in the beautiful lake and enjoy the synergy with nature.

4. Memorial Gandhi Tekdi

This memorial is dedicated to the ‘Father Of The Nation.’ You can walk or drive up here to enjoy beautiful views that contrast the city and forest.

The Gandhi Tekdi, a monument dedicated to the ‘father’ of the nation, is located just a stone’s throw from the main gate. You can enjoy beautiful views of the city and surrounding forests while you’re there. Walking or driving can reach the point via the stairs or the forest road.
