REVIEW – Star Trek Inception written by S.D. Perry & Britta Dennison Mass-market Paperback, 320 pages

SPOILERS BELOW

At the same time, Dr. Marcus and one of her team members, Leila Kalomi, are dealing with very personal decisions as they look at both the present state of their lives and their futures. Their decisions surround love, and are focused squarely on James Kirk and Spock.

There you have the basic setup for “Inception”, and, frankly, that’s about all you need.

Star Trek fans have long been curious about Jim Kirk’s relationship with Carol Marcus, and a few of those questions are answered by Perry and Dennison, but on the whole, “Inception” comes across as a morality play on environmental issues (which isn’t bad in-and-of-itself) using Star Trek characters to provide an audience. Nothing about the storyline feels particularly original, and both Kirk and Spock feel enormously underused; especially considering the prominence with which they are displayed on the book’s cover.

Little about the Kalomi/Spock arc seems to fully explain the feelings of the botanist when Spock will again encounter her in the TOS episode "This Side of Paradise." Kalomi essentially comes across as being ‘on the rebound’, and horribly desperate. Marcus, on the other hand, is handled far more thoughtfully – presenting her with some real dilemmas to address with regard to her relationship with Kirk, but ultimately her arc is cut far short, and ends unsatisfactorily.

Other than the promise of food for all, little about Project Inception seems noteworthy, not even the potential side-effects of a failure. It has obvious ties to Marcus’ later Project Genesis, and while the environmental activists of Redpeace and the Whole Earth organizations are busy talking up the potential disastrous side-effects of Inception, there is no grand wonder and terror inspired by the work, unlike its later successor.

Ultimately, “Inception” fails on nearly every level. The narrative suffers from a rushed feeling, the storyline is terribly un-engaging, and one would enjoy a more compelling story surrounding environmental concerns and conservation by watching a few episodes of “Whale Wars”.

COMING NEXT: Lots of Trek books over the next month

There is a lot more Star Trek reading coming to your book store in the coming weeks. Due out this week is the mass market reprint of Peter David’s 2009 novel " Star Trek New Frontier: Treason ". And in March Pocket Books has the " Star Trek: Seven Deadly Sins " trade paperback collection of novellas exploring different Trek races, using the classic seven deadly sins as a framing structure. Later in March comes " Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many " , the ‘oral history’ as told to Jake Sisko (via Michael A. Martin) set in the universe of the new massive multiplayer game. And also coming in March is Margaret Wander Bonanno’s " Star Trek: Unspoken Truth ", a TOS movie era novel focusing on Saavik.

This is interesting. We have here one of the few mentions of corporate involvement of sorts in the affairs of the Federation. (This is not to say that the Federation is devoid of corporations, but only that mention of corporations is sparse in Trekdom.)

The effect of Avatar, perhaps? (Avatar’s main villain is ultimately the employee of a corporation and arguably the corporation itself.)

#1 “The effect of Avatar, perhaps? (Avatar’s main villain is ultimately the employee of a corporation and arguably the corporation itself.)”

I would agree with the argument that, in Avatar, the corporation is the villain, with Quaritch simply representing his employers.

I would doubt, however, that there’s any kind of “Avatar Effect” manifesting this early in “Inception,” unless these novels are proposed, tentatively approved, outlined, greenlighted, drafted, edited, re-drafted, finished, proofed, laid out and published _far_ more rapidly than I’d want to believe :(

On the other hand, maybe it’s been laying in a drawer for two years and the Avatar Effect is an editor remembering it and saying “maybe now’s the time …” :)

^ No, it really isn’t. This book’s content would have been finalized months before Avatar opened.

Sounds a lot like Avatar or Alien with corporations running things behind the scenes..with a secret agenda….like Paxton in Terra Prime…not the anti alien side…just the business side…or Weyland Yutani in the Alien movies…

I loved the cover but thats it. Nothing exciting. poor Leila. She comes off as a lovesick puppy. I’m only 2/3rds through it but i can’t get into it enogh to finish it. Think I’ll just skim it to see how Carol tells Kirk about the baby!

Interesting comments, S. John Ross. It’s nice to talk to someone who obviously enjoys Trek and is knowledgeable about other cultural phenoms, as well.

I think we live in interesting times, as far as SF. It seems to be experiencing a mini-Renaissance, although a question may be raised concerning the quality.

I’ve always wanted to read more Trek lit but, sadly, do not have the time. I’m almost sure I could find some connections between Trek novels and other things that could be fodder for some great discussions.

How is it S.D. Perry keeps getting Star Trek commissions? I’ve yet to come upon one of her books that was any good. Carol Marcus isn’t an uninteresting character–it’s a shame her story was taken up so poorly–and if anyone is interested in her, I’d recommend the Vanguard series.

Tell us what you really think, Robert. :)

I don’t look forward to this one though. Leila Kalomi was a competent biologist, yet under the influence of the spores. She wasn’t a sucker for Spock, he was a logical interest: and he was half-human after all. I would have prefered to see Leila as a character meeting Spock on Vulcan. Amanda Grayson was a librarian, Sarek a diplomat and Science Academy fellow: it wouldn’t have been so crazy to have Leila studying at the VSA, would it? And Amanda encouraging them? Alas.

Carol should be someone Kirk met during command training (or in the alt universe, during his academy training). McCoy and Mitchell clearly would be involved, as McCoy knows the old wound well, and deranged-mind-state-Mitchell kids insensitively about “that little blonde lab tech”. Both clues for when this story should have happened.

I don’t understand the story assignment here. These stories should have gone to someone like garamet, or Dayton Ward, or Peter David… it should have had an expert on Trek and characterizations. Sounds like from your review, Robert, that’s it’s more of a paint-by-numbers book.

I can’t bear the thought of reading the character Jill Ireland brought to life as lovesick recently-dumped puppy. That’s pathetic.

And it dishonors the memory of two great actresses, both sadly struck down in their prime by the same disease… breast cancer.

The Mars-ecology plot sounds much more inspired by Kim Stanley Robinson than Avatar

If they got all up in arms about Dr Marcus’ attempts to grow plants in regolith, they would have crapped themselves when they saw the Genesis proposal.

Still, aside from a “take only pictures and leave only footprints” mentality, what moral imperative is there to preserve a dead ecosystem? Also, I think it’s pretty well established in Trek lore that Mars had been colonized quite early on. I’m sure they were growing their food under a dome for decades by that time and Marcus’ experiment would simply allow them to use native soil as opposed to bringing in fill dirt.

From what I’ve read, the issue is not so much the soil nutrition, but the other aspects of the Martian environment, namely extreme cold, drought, and low atmospheric pressure that are the real hurdles to Martian cultivation. However, scientists at the NASA Institute of Advanced Concepts are currently crafting a plant to exist in this environment by combining a gene from an extreme-tolerant microbe called P. furiosus and a small, fast growing plant called arabidopsis.

To me this sounds like a Harlequin romance “bodice-ripper” disguised as a Star Trek book – probably a side-effect of the last movie’s crossover success with women.

Anyone know where I can locate a Star Trek novel database? I am looking for all the TOS era novels.

Here is a link to The Complete Starfleet Library Database of TOS era books. This includes novels, short story anthologies and other Star Trek fiction as well as non-fiction Star Trek books.

http://www.well.com/~sjroby/lcars/tosindex.html

The site also catalogs all of the other series books also. Go to the main page and you can find almost anything you want by year, title, series, etc.

Both women on th cover are dead. Died of the same cancer I believe. Shame.

Why did they feel the need to kill Kirks son in STTSFS?

@15, because the writer, Harve Bennett, set up a scenario on Genesis in which there were three characters – Spock, Saavik, and David Marcus – who the Klingons were threatening to kill, and he thought it was a cheat to the audience to not follow through on the jeopardy he’d set up and kill one of them. Of the three, David Marcus was deemed most expendable. Spock couldn’t die again since the movie was called “The Search for Spock” and, at the time, Saavik was perceived as having more potential to “the franchise’ going forward (which turned out not to be the case), so David got whacked and Shatner got to emote.

Pity about the cover. Remember when they actually had paintings for the book covers?

“as told to Jake Sisko (via Michael A. Martin)”

“as told by ‘Jake Sisko’ (to Michael A. Martin)” or: “by ‘Jake Sisko’ (as told to Michael A. Martin)”

If it is indeed yourself ;) just wanted to say thanks & excellent work on your Trek work both in print and on DS9…

With regard to Inception, it’s an interesting concept for a book and S.D Perry is usually pretty reliable for a good read so the review leaves me in two minds whether to pick this up now.

I am looking forward to reading this novel I realy enjoyed their richness in carcter but carol was the blonde tech Gary set Kirk up with. I did wonder. At 1st I thought it was Ruth “shoreleave” but may I make a suestion. It would be great to sell the books and proceeds benefit. Breast Cancor reserch in memory of of these wonderful women who’s live were robbed by this horrific disease. May I suggest the Susan Colhman reast cancor fund.

Also thank you for that website on all trek novels TOS in particular. I lost several of these books on my many moves around the country. Great guide.

Wow, David Mack is here?

Awesome, AWESOME job on Vanguard, Mr. Mack. I’m in the middle of Precipice right now and it keeps causing me to stay up too late.

I’m about halfway through the book and I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve certainly read worse Trek novels.

I will def give “Inception” a try. SD Perry did an excellent job with the DS9 novel “Rising Son”. It was a much better read than I expected.

However my top faves still remain, those being Peter David, David Mack, Dayton Ward, Keith RA DeCandido, and the team of Magels/Martin.

While there are some good Trek authors out there, the best books seem to be those penned by the authors I listed IMHO.

#24 :: Hey, you stole my favourites. (Nah I kid.) But I would add Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens to that list. They write those “to heck with canon!” books that completely defy all that we know about Star Trek, but they’re just so gosh darn entertaining. Hehehe.

I want to read “Needs of the Many” so badly. I neeeeeeeeeeed it. 83 And Inception, because I have been and always will be a Spock/Leila Kalomi fan. Sue. Me. I dare you!

I haven’t read any novels in years, but I might pick up the “Seven Deadly Sins” book though.

But I really hope Pocket Books reconsider their position on non-fiction Trek books, like an updated encyclopedia, a second volume of “Ships of The Line” and maybe another technical manual. But Pocket Books claim they can’t make money and so its only novels. And they may end up cutting back on those with the focus being solely on TOS and TNG.

Anthony, which novels have you read and which are your favorites? And did you ever read the “Nitpicker’s Guide(s) For (TOS),(TNG)(DS9) Trekkers”?

You really should give some of the newer TrekLit a chance, seriously.

I’m currently reading Klingon Empire: A Burning House by Keith R A DeCandido and it is excellent. It totally shows you different aspects of life in the empire from different characters viewpoints. This is from both characters you have seen on screen and those that exist soley in TrekLit.

A lot of the recent novels “force” you to go back and revisit episodes so you can get maximum enjoyment out of the reading experience.

Trust me, you will immensely enjoy going through your DVDs and watching episodes again that are tied to the novels. The current book I am reading made me go back and watch TNG :Birthright and DS9: Sons of Mogh and it was a lot of fun doing so.

I have read quite a few trek novels, and listened to all of the audiobooks, but i am not caught up on the books from the last decade, except the shatner/reeves-stevens books, Destiny a few of the ‘time for’ books, some of the DS9 relaunch. Too hard to pick favorites but all the reevesstevens books are a good place to start. Peter Davids Imzadi books, Strangers from the sky, i dunno thats all i got off top of head

RE: Nitpick guides Pointless

So the book where Kirk knocks up Carol is called “Inception”? Heh. Cute.

@24, 25: Great author picks! You should also check out anything by the two Dianes: Carey and Duane.

Diane Carey is a must-read for anyone who even slightly likes Kirk; she absolutely gets him. She also gives her books this cool nautical feel to them (I read somewhere that she’s actually worked on sailing ships).

I could wate paragraphs fanboy-ing about Diane Duane, but suffice it to say that her books could make a Vulcan laugh, and wring tears out of a Horta. ;)

Nice cover.

“Redpeace”?? Is that serious?

I’m a couple chapters into this and right now, yeah, this doesn’t really feel like a Star Trek novel.

I think a more interesting plot would be trying to get to the bottom of why Carol Marcus always wants to take on these ultra-quick terraforming projects that always seem poised for disaster.

As man expands beyond explored space, the need to find a way to make inhospitable planets hospitable grows greater.  One young biologist, Carol Marcus, has a project she is convinced can reshape planets.  She puts together a team of young, committed scientists who dare to dream as she does: of a Federation remade so hunger is eradicated, where every world can be reshaped into a paradise.  The belief that all things are possible, that man can strive to conquer space not with force but with science, is shared by James Kirk, a young starfleet officer and her lover.
Leila Kalomi, a renowned botanist, is looking for a new direction.  After hearing about Marcus's project, she applies for a position.  She finds Carol's passion contagious, and a chance encounter with the Enterprise 's science officer, Spock, convinces her to join Project: Inception.
Four people just trying to find the balance between their careers and their personal lives, trying to make the right choice not just for themselves but for the betterment of all mankind.  The choices they make will rewrite the history of the Federation and change forever how man explores space.

inception

To most “Trek” readers, Peter David’s “Imzadi” is held up as the gold standard for filling in the details of a previous romance–in this case, giving us the history of Riker and Troi before they met again on the bridge of the starship Enterprise.

Then there’s the latest entry in the “Trek” fiction line, “Inception” that wants to give us a bit of insight into the romance between Captain James T. Kirk and Carol Marcus as well as that of Spock and Leila Calomi before the original series begin.  A novel that concentrated on one or the other might have worked better, but the usually reliable S.D. Perry and new writer Britta Dennison instead bring both romantic pairings together in such a way that strains the willing suspension of disbelief and, as a whole, drags down the story.

It also doesn’t help that most fans know how these things will end and the authors don’t offer any new insight or character nuances to help keep the story moving along.

Coming off a bad break-up, Leila joins Carol Marcus’ scientific team that is looking to use a revolutionary and controversial element to help terraform part of Mars.   A group of protesters seeks to stand in the way of the development, leading to a lot of passages that get bogged down in a debate over the merit of scientific progress and how it’s achieved with Kirk offering the Starfleet party line and the group’s leader opposing him.  The story does try to offer a motivation for the leader, but since he’s a relative new comer to the “Trek” universe it’s hard to really emphasize as much with him as we might or the authors want us to.

Into all this, we discover that Carol and Kirk are in the midst of their romance and that Leila meets Spock and falls hopelessly in love with him.

What could have been a fascinating exploration of two influential women in the lives of two of the most popular characters in the “Trek” canon instead is nothing more than a lot of relationship angst for pages on end.  Carol worries about how to tell Kirk her big news and how he’ll react while Leila pines for the emotionally unavailable Spock.

In many ways, the concept behind “Inception” is an interesting one, but as I read the novel I kept thinking it might have worked better as a short story. Weight in at just over 300 pages, the novel is fairly lightweight both in page count and in storyline.  The story is a fascinating experiment but one that, unfortunately, comes up short.

I reviewed this novel for Fancentral a couple days ago…and while I agree the story lacked depth, I have to disagree that it fell ‘short’ entirely. I rather enjoyed it and felt it was worth my time to read (sadly, most Trek novels DO come up short….WAY SHORT).

Yes…..it is a little ‘too coincidental that Leila and Carol intersect in their involvements with Kirk and Spock, but hey….it’s a small universe (tongue in cheek). The most glaring error, in my opinion is that the novel is guilty of gently brushing the surface where it could have gone much deeper and more complete into this bit of Trek history. The lack of depth and the abrupt ending (that really didn’t ‘feel’ like an ending at all, more like a rush to make it to the press on time) were my only real gripes about this book.

All in all, it was an enjoyable read that kept me wanting to know more until the very end….albeit the fact that I didn’t get that climactic ‘more’ I was looking for.

On a scale from 1 – 10, I would give it a shaky 7, but in the world of trek fiction…that’s a fairly positive number.

An Aural History of the Inception Horn

star trek inception

As countless viewers have noted, there is a familiar sound ringing through the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer : the Inception horn.  That “Braaaaaaam” has become more famous than the movie that birthed it; it is the Super-Loud Movie Noise of Our Time . But technically, the Inception horn is not just one horn — it is the work of five instruments who came together to play one note at top volume in the name of history. Vulture asked French horn, Bassoon, Trombone, Tuba, and Timpani to tell the story in their own words.

French horn: I have been around a long time. Like, since the Renaissance. So, I am tough to impress. Bassoon: Don’t ask French horn about the Renaissance. Ugh. Trombone: I’m an easygoing guy, you know? Bands, orchestras, classical, jazz, marching bands, whatever, I am down for anything that is fun. So when [ Inception composer] Hans Zimmer assembled us, it was no big deal. French horn: I’m not actually from France. Bassoon: Up to that point, we had been playing a lot of real dirge-y stuff. Batman , Frost/Nixon — pays the bills, but that’s no one’s favorite. Tuba: I enjoyed Frost/Nixon . Bassoon: Anyway, there we all were, and at first it’s like, what is this shit? French horn: It was just “doot doot doooooot,” who even cares? And we all have to play at the same time? I don’t like sharing. Bassoon: If I wanted to share, I’d be a flute, you know? Tuba: People usually get out of my way. Trombone: There aren’t a lot of trombone solos out there, other than in gameshow work. I am used to bringing everyone together. This was a real treat for me. Timpani: Yeah, the horns seemed a little worked up about having to play all at once, but Trombone stepped up and got them to agree. French horn: I will admit, Trombone is a good-looking guy. Trombone: French horn? Oh, I don’t know, we always wind up sitting near each other, but I wouldn’t make too much of it. French horn: I’m not saying I did, but I’m saying I would. Bassoon: Trombone sort of rallied the troops, but even then I was still sort of skeptical. I was like, I left Peter and the Wolf for this? Timpani: On the day of the performance, everything was going wrong. It was really humid, everyone was grumpy, there was no Nescafé, it was not that long after Michael Jackson died, everyone was just in a funk. French horn: Hans Zimmer rolls up with his four Grammys and his Oscar and is all “Just trust me, horns.” We didn’t want to. Tuba: But then we all started playing. Trombone: And it was like, blam! Magic! Bassoon: I knew immediately that we were on to something. Trombone: It was incredible. French horn: It was like the first time I saw the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which I saw shortly after its completion, because the Reniassance. Trombone: And then it just exploded. We’re all in the trailer, people are yelling “Braaaaam!” in the streets, everyone is pressing that button all the time. French horn: I mean I can’t go out to dinner without someone approaching the table and asking me to do the noise. “Are you French horn? Are you from France? How was the Renaissance? Tell me about Inception ! Do the sound! Do the sound!” Bassoon: This was sort of around the time that Vuvuzelas were picking up. I gotta say, that scared me for a minute, until I realized that no cheapo piece of shit plastic junk can make an Inception sound. There’s no vuvuzela button. [Ed note: There is, actually.] Trombone: Pretty soon the horn is in every trailer, and we’re all fighting over royalties. Everyone’s like “I saw that Prometheus trailer. Where’s my check?” Where is my check, by the way? French horn: I do not wish to discuss the legal battle surrounding Inception horn at this time. Bassoon: On advice of counsel, I can’t talk about that. But I will say, that was a tough time. I saw the trailer for Planet of the Apes , and it was like, the feeling of being robbed. Just having someone reach right up and take things from me. Tuba: The new Star Trek trailer made me cry. How are they allowed to just take what is ours? Bassoon: Then came the whole “it’s just that other song slowed down.” French horn: Some people thought it was just a slowed track. It’s not. It’s us. We’re playing. I mean, come on. Trombone : I went through a real dark phase where I was just Googling it constantly, reading people say “it’s just a slowed-down track, how cool!” It stung, man. It really stung. Timpani: That didn’t really bother me. I just have my sound, you know? When I play, does thunder get jealous? No. You gotta be you. French horn: That is easy for Timpani to say, he is a primitive instrument. Cavemen had drums. Rock musicians have drums. Trombone: But look, at the end of the day, we made history. You can’t take that away from us. Every time someone says “Braaaaaaam” — that’s us. We were there. Tuba: You know what, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I hear people make that noise on the street sometimes, and it’s a reminder that I’m part of something really important. French horn: Is Trombone single? Did he mention anything one way or the other with that?

5 Minutes with Artist Paul Shipper

star trek inception

Paul Shipper, whose contribution to the Star Trek. 50 Artists. 50 Years. collection is called Star Trek Inception: The Cage , is a UK-based illustrator who creates art for properties and clients around the world. He specializes in traditional and digitally illustrated works realized in a “retro” style. His art has appeared on film posters, billboards and T-shirts, as well as on the covers of comics, magazines and books. Shipper's illustrated posters were awarded Silver at the 2014 Key Art Awards in Hollywood, and his original art and prints have been displayed in many galleries. StarTrek.com caught up with Shipper for a brief conversation at a gallery showing of the 50 Artists. 50 Years. exhibition at Comic-Con in San Diego this past summer. Here's what he had to say:

Introduce us to your piece. How did you settle on this episode and what did you want to try to capture in this?

star trek inception

When I was asked to do a piece for the Star Trek exhibition, I just figured the best idea would be to go straight to the very first thing that Gene Roddenberry actually brought out. It was the inception, I kind of call it, of Star Trek . It’s like the very first frontier. This is the springboard of what Star Trek became and, to me personally, it just felt like the right thing to do, and to take it from there. The characters, who obviously changed a lot from this to the actual series, were also very interesting to me.

How did you create it? It's a digital piece...

It is digital, but it’s actually digital illustration on top of a painted surface. I don’t want it to look too much like a photo, so you can see all of the pencil marks and the brush strokes in there. That’s part of the aesthetic that I really enjoy in my illustration works.

star trek inception

How well did you know Star Trek when this project came along?

I grew up watching Star Trek like many people did. The time when I was first introduced to it was really The Next Generation , and then I went back to The Original Series . Then, later on, in life, I got to work with CBS and IDW Publishing on a Star Trek comic book series. So, yeah, my relationship with Star Trek has been a really fun one so far, and hopefully it will continue.

What does it mean to you to come into a gallery full of Star Trek art, and to have your piece be a part of this 50th anniversary collection?

First of all, to be asked to be a part of the selected 50 artists is a great honor. And to celebrate the whole thing in its 50th year is incredible. Walking into the gallery here, and seeing the art on the wall for the first time was an experience. You could actually feel it. It was a visceral kind of feeling when I walked in. The first thing I saw was actually the piece by Leonard Nimoy on the wall there. The artwork here is phenomenal. There are so many different styles and concepts, and everyone is coming from different places. It is a real celebration of Star Trek , and I’m really pleased to be a part of it.

  • Trivia Simon Pegg did not audition for the role - he simply received an email from J.J. Abrams asking if he would like to play Scotty. Pegg said he would have done this for free, or even paid Abrams to be in this film, if he had not been offered a role.
  • Goofs After Spock boards the Vulcan ship on board the mining vessel, Kirk is seen walking through some pipes. His Starfleet phaser has switched to a Romulan gun (longer barrel and no lights), before switching back to the Starfleet one again in the next scene. He actually acquires the Romulan gun a few scenes later.

Summary [ ]

2228–2231 – Nine-year old Christopher and his architect mother, Willa McKinnies, leave their home in Mojave and join their new stepfather/husband, Heston Prescott, in colonizing the frontier world of Elysium. Prescott is something of a legend in terraforming and he's awarded special considerations for helping the colony to establish its self-sufficiency. He has grand plans – harnessing a nearby volcano and the surrounding wilderness, using geothermal energy to completely power his own homestead away from the city, and breeding horses to introduce into the wild – though his reach repeatedly exceeds his grasp.

The volcano proves difficult to harness, sprouting new fault lines and causing flooding and earthquakes. Heston is constantly at odds with the Neworlders, crusty agronomists who decry all pre-millennial technology, especially his unnatural contraptions. The ruling council prohibits further tampering with the tectonics; Heston ignores them but is left using outdated and piecemeal technology in designing and building his master "Gizmo" to monitor and alter the environment. He becomes obsessed, prioritizing his own projects above Willa's and he's often away from home. He reveals Willa's pregnancy to Chris – something it was her place to tell the boy – but is too busy to care about his wife's rage. Despite several accidents and a volcanic eruption, Heston refuses to listen to anyone, insisting that he'll fix every problem himself and prove them wrong. His actions ultimately endanger his family and the whole colony.

Young Chris is very interested in the horses, but Heston forces the boy to keep his distance. Despite his plans, the horses are really only a hobby and an investment; Heston isn't that knowledgeable, so he pays others to do the real work. He hires Charlie Pike to see to their breeding, though the two men continually butt heads. Heston flexes his authority and calls the shots, but Charlie is the one who makes things happen. While Chris never knew his birth father, and his relationship with Heston goes from difficult to impossible, Charlie quickly becomes his best friend and mentor. He teaches Chris to ride and train horses, and somehow convinces Heston to let Chris keep the firstborn colt (Tango) as his own. However, Chris is crushed when he overhears Willa and Charlie discussing what to do about Heston and suspects them of having an affair.

Heston drafts Chris into helping him move the Gizmo into the volcano to continue tinkering, but by now he's so irrational that he suspects the boy of sabotage and threatens him; Chris runs away and Charlie rescues him from the wilderness. Though it temporarily seems like Heston fixes the tectonic problems, the earthquakes resume with increasing intensity. Soon after, the hybrid grasses that Heston planted to solve erosion issues (despite Charlie's cautionary warnings) erupt in a massive wildfire that consumes hundreds of thousands of acres. The fire may have been sparked by an "unforeseen interaction of transplanted grasses with the non-native environment causing spontaneous combustion," Newworlder teenagers playing with fire, a volcanic hiccup, or something else – a definitive cause is never discovered – but the conflagration threatens the whole colony and completely destroys the Prescott homestead. Heston runs off on his own and dies in the blaze. Willa is killed when their house catches fire and collapses on top of her. Charlie saves Chris, who blames himself for years after for failing to save his mother. Charlie, Chris, and Tango (now also an orphan) evacuate to an orbiting starship and return to Earth.

2231–2241 – Charlie and his wife Hobelia legally adopt Chris on his 13th birthday and the men settle back into Mojave. Charlie, a constant wanderer, is in and out of Starfleet and occasionally away on assignment. Chris excels in his studies, is captain of the football team, casually dates a lot of girls, and spends lots of time with Tango – their special relationship forged in fire. As Chris approaches graduation, he considers enlisting in Starfleet but Charlie convinces him that he's too smart and talented to be a grunt. With minimal help from Charlie and his well-placed contacts in Starfleet Command, Chris is easily accepted to the Academy. He’s haunted by the ghosts of Elysium and is very wary of being responsible for other people's lives, but still pursues the command track. Nearly obsessed with perfection, he retests himself for anything less than a perfect grade and graduates at the top of his class.

2246 – Pike quickly advances through the ranks without facing any major crises or losing a life under his command. Now a lieutenant commander, he's assigned as XO of the front-line cutter USS Aldrin . The ship is tasked with patrolling the border of the Vestios system where the local civil war is threatening to spill into Federation territory. Chris' excitement for the new assignment, especially as he and Charlie will be serving together for the first time, is short-lived. Hard-ass Captain Kamnach frowns on senior officers fraternizing with enlisted crew; he explicitly orders that the Pikes are not to have any contact outside of the line of duty. Second officer/weapons chief Hanley and Kamnach are old friends and the two share an itch to see some action. Pike is hopeful for a relationship with Lt. Hana Flowers in communications, but events conspire against them. Chief Engineer Chee Wee Chua ("Chewy") is by far the friendliest face that Pike is allowed to talk to.

While the ship is on patrol, insurgents topple the Vestian government. Kamnach is looking for a fight and uses the region's communications dead zones to get away with doing whatever he wants. Using circumstantial evidence of Vestian aggression, he orders an attack on a Vestian ship on their own side of the border, resulting in that craft's destruction, and later alters official logs to show the enemy ship was in Federation space. Worried, Pike feels out a few allies among the senior officers. Kamnach later orders an attack on a second ship (still within Vestian space) and refuses to listen to communiques that might defuse the situation. Pike stages a mutiny, having Kamnach removed to his quarters, but Hanley fires on the other ship without orders, forcing a battle that leaves the Aldrin heavily damaged. Chewy and six other crewmen are killed. Fighting the burden of command and distraught over the deaths on his watch, Pike apologizes for the attack and convinces the Vestians to stand down. He is vindicated when the communiques state that the war is over. The Aldrin limps home, but the incident becomes a source of great public debate, and the officers face a court martial. Starfleet Command rules that both men were right and wrong given the circumstances, and decides to whitewash the complicated situation; Kamnach is honorably retired but faces a loss of purpose, and Pike is promoted to full commander. In confidence, Admiral Straczeskie reveals that Pike was stationed on the Aldrin to expose Kamnach's questionable behavior.

Pike is incensed and considers resigning his commission. Trying to talk sense into Chris, Charlie finally reveals himself to be Chris' father. Years earlier, Charlie and Willa were together for a year before his wanderlust took him back into space. She let him go, didn't tell him she was pregnant, and refused his marriage offer once he did find out. Charlie correctly sensed that Heston would be a problem and followed them to Elysium to look after his son. Keeping such a large secret for so long only creates a wide gulf between them, and Chris immediately takes a long-term post on the USS York .

2254 – Pike is haunted by the ghosts of Talos for years after the encounter. He fears that he never actually left, that his experiences since are merely more illusion, and he occasionally puts himself in mortal danger to see what will happen. Spock believes that once such powerful telepaths touch another mind, they are forever, if only tenuously, linked. Pike is also preoccupied with Vina, learning all he can about her life. He even visits her mother's still-operational bakery though he instantly regrets it. Every future relationship is compared to her spectre.

Vina was born early in the 23rd century in Paris, the bustling Federation capital and cultural center. She studied as a dancer under her father, a famous choreographer, and as a shuttle pilot, but didn't have the focus to commit to any single pursuit. While a university student, she fell in love with Professor Theo Haskins and served as his assistant on several deep-space expeditions, the last of which took them past Talos. An engine failure forced a crash-landing and Theo shoved her into a refrigeration unit at the center of the ship. She alone survived, though horribly injured, and the Talosians recovered and treated her as best they could. They taught her how to retreat into her dreams while her body healed, and they followed her themselves. When the Enterprise arrives eighteen years later, she was coerced into cooperating with their scheme through the promise of true human companionship and the threat of what would happen to the Starfleet crew if they don't prove useful.

2262 – Pike's second five-year tour on the Enterprise ends with a survey of the Kanes system. Though one planet appears to be an uninhabited paradise, the crew quickly run into trouble. A ship operated by an unknown reptilian species – the Kan'ess – arrives in orbit. Its systems disrupt all communications and scanners and the most of the landing party are eaten alive by Kan'ess hunting parties. Spock and Pike avoid a similar fate but are marooned on the surface. Pike risks his life (unnecessarily) and is captured and taken to the Kan'ess homeworld while Spock escapes to the Enterprise , which is forced to withdraw. The captain discovers that the aliens are deaf and he learns the rudiments of their gestural language enough to demonstrate his own sentience. He is spared from becoming dinner but is instead kept by the regional director as a sort of pet, a curiosity. The universal translator has no provisions for communicating with deaf species, but Pike works with their scientists to develop a primitive voder translation device. He learns that the materials used in Kan'ess clothing and technology inadvertently disrupt communications and sensors, while his crew separately devise a means to penetrate the interference. When the director begins molting and retreats to her private quarters, Pike takes the opportunity to escape. He finds a communications center and discovers that the Kan'ess have reverse-engineered his voder, using it to lure the Enterprise in so that the crew can be captured as food. He warns the starship away, but is still rescued. Kanes space is declared off-limits and the Enterprise returns to port. Weary of his losses and put off of deep-space expeditions, Pike accepts a promotion to fleet captain.

2264–2267 – Pike's new position gives him great latitude and flexibility; he can cut orders from his desk or go out on assignment. His own wanderlust – and Vina's ghost – prevent him from developing any lasting romantic relationships, though he does become involved with Siddhe, an Argelian attaché. An empath-sensitive, she can feel the past and the future. While Siddhe helps Pike to face his past, even helping him to make up with Charlie and to forgive himself for his mother's death, she won't commit herself to his (doomed) future.

A training cruise ends horribly when the old ship suffers a structural failure. Half of the vessel is irradiated, but Pike saves most of the hundred instructors and trainees by sealing off the damaged sections and (single-handedly, without a radiation suit) pulling as many people out of danger as he can. He is left a broken man, incapable even of asking to be put out of his agony. Spock – and the Talosians, who indeed maintained a faint touch with his mind – offer him a last chance at anything approaching a normal life. Though wary, he ultimately accepts and is reunited with Vina. The self-exiled Humans come to know each other in truth, rather than dealing with idealized illusions and memories of each other. Pike also learns about the Talosians' past and finds purpose in helping them to build a promising new future. Siddhe visits Charlie and Hobelia, offering them a semblance of closure and the knowledge that Christopher Pike is safe and at peace. Tango has somehow sensed what has happened to his friend and he quietly passes away that same evening.

2320 – Spock is summoned to Talos IV once again. Using his ambassadorial status, he sneaks away and pilots a shuttle to the off-limits planet with only a brief interruption by the USS Excelsior . He finds that Captain Pike and Vina have long since passed away, but that the influx of Pike’s memories, ambition, and energy have spurred the Talosians to rebuild society themselves. Surface radiation has been minimized and the rubble has been replaced by gleaming cities and new generations of Talosians, who seek contact with the Federation. Having watched Spock from a distance for decades, they believe him the best person to share their story.

The Star Trek “Origin” Movie Is Finally Going Into Production

The new Star Trek prequel movie is set to be revealed on the big screen. Probably.

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock (Mr. Spock) in the STAR TREK: The Origina...

For 30 years — from 1979 to 2009 — the longest wait between new Star Trek feature films was seven years. And, for most of that period, from the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), there was almost always a new Star Trek movie in theaters every two to four years. But after the wildly successful J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film in 2009, the release clip for Trek movies went from maximum warp to impulse power, to glacially slow. And now, by the time the next Star Trek movie hits theaters, it will have been about 10 years since the previous one — Star Trek Beyond — beamed into cinemas in 2016.

Since that time, for Trekkies, updates of a new Star Trek film have been very similar to the game football Lucy plays with Charlie Brown; just when a hypothetical movie sounds real, it gets snatched away. But now, there’s a glimmer of hope. Thanks to reports out of CinemaCon 2024, it looks like, the next Trek film is scheduled for release in either 2025 or 2026. But what’s it about? And will it really happen?

Star Trek 14 is “an untitled origin story”

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in 'Star Trek' (2009).

The new “origin story” will be set before the 2009 reboot. But how many decades before?

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount confirmed several in-development projects including a live-action GI Joe / Transformers crossover (teased in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts ), a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie, a remake of the sci-fi thriller The Running Man (from Edgar Wright), the confirmation of an Avatar trilogy, and the assertion that a new Star Trek feature film will go into production this year, with a release date soon to follow.

Since 2016 to now, there have been at least five different attempts to make a new Star Trek film, either as timey wimey direct sequel to Beyond (“Star Trek 4”) a one-off space mobster movie (Quentin Tarantino’s script) or something else entirely (Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman’s attempts that remain undisclosed). But now, although Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Beyond — which would feature the reboot cast from the 2009 film one last time — the next Star Trek movie is not that sequel, but instead, as previously reported , an “origin story” that “takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.” This movie has been confirmed to be directed by Toby Haynes ( Andor, Doctor Who ) with a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie , Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) .

Wait? Wasn’t the 2009 film an “origin story?” While the answer to this question is technically a “yes,” the 2009 film (just titled Star Trek ) was also partially a time-travel sequel to the canon established in The Next Generation , and literally everything else in the Trek franchise up until that point. By saying the new prequel film takes place “decades before” the first reboot, this could hypothetically mean that the movie takes place in both the Prime and Kelvin timelines simultaneously.

TLDR: The Trek timeline diverged in the first reboot movie, beginning in the year 2233, so, a story set even a few decades before that divergence, in the 2210s or 2220s or earlier, would be consistent with all versions of Trek's future history. Presumably, the “origin story” won’t take place in the two decades between the prologue of the 2009 film (2233) and the main story (2258), because honestly, even for hardcore Trekkies that’s a big canon headache. So, sometime in the early 2200s, but before the 2230s is probably the best bet. And, even if the movie was set a bit earlier than that — say in the late 2180s or 2190s — we’d still be dealing with a very early point of Starfleet history that has never been depicted and that we know almost nothing about. Hence, if you squint — and don’t think about the prequel series Enterprise (2151-2161) too much — then yes, we’re looking at an origin story in which pretty much anything could happen.

Star Trek “origin” movie release date

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: The USS Enterprise during the opening credit for in the STAR TREK: The Ori...

One of the earliest shots of the USS Enterprise — from the 1964 Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage.” The new prequel film will likely be set half a century before this moment.

While some tweets out of CinemaCon seemed to indicate that the new Star Trek movie could hit next year in 2025 , TrekMovie confirmed that the “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story,” is on the Paramount slate for 2025 or 2026. TrekMovie also predicted that 2026 is more likely, writing, “If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026 — in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.” Then again, 2025 is not impossible, it’s just cutting it a little close.

It should also be noted that the entire corporate entity of Paramount is reportedly close to a merger that would see it purchased by Skydance Media, the same production company behind the three existing J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboots. If that deal is finalized soon, then, yes, this Star Trek feature film might actually happen very quickly. And if it doesn’t, there will still be plenty of new Star Trek shows streaming , not to mention the first direct-to-streaming standalone Star Trek movie, Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh, which will hit Paramount+ sometime later this year.

All the reboot Star Trek films (2009-2016) are currently streaming on Paramount+. The previous ten films (1979-2002) are all on Max.

‘Star Trek’ Origin Story Movie Will Be Set Decades Before 2009 Film

CinemaCon 2024: The new project will be produced by longtime “Star Trek” steward J.J. Abrams

star-trek-2009-chris-pine-zachary-quinto

Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go (again).

After rumors circulated earlier this year, Paramount officially announced a new “Star Trek” prequel film on Thursday, this time taking place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” feature.

“Andor” director Toby Haynes will direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (who is also writing another hotly touted CinemaCon title, the third “Now You See Me” film). J.J. Abrams is returning to produce.

But then again, we’ve heard about a new “Star Trek” movie before.

star trek inception

During the run-up to “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, it was revealed that a fourth film would reunite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his deceased father (played, once again, by Chris Hemsworth). A year later, Quentin Tarantino approached Paramount about doing a “Star Trek” movie – this time as an R-rated gangster movie (based, in part, on the 1968 episode of the original series “A Piece of the Action”). In 2018 S.J. Clarkson, a TV vet who would eventually direct “Madame Web,” was hired to direct the fourth film in the Abrams-verse, but salary disputes led to Pine and Hemsworth leaving the project. That version was canceled in 2019 and Tarantino stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be making his “Star Trek” either.

In November 2019 “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new “Star Trek” film based on his version of the series. A year later, this movie was canceled by new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts. In 2021 “Star Trek: Discovery” writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired to write a version based on her original pitch, but a separate script was being developed by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio even set a summer 2023 release date for a new “Trek” (which “Trek” was the question).

In 2021 that release date was pushed to Christmas 2023, under the direction of “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires were brought on to retool the script. In early 2022 it was announced that the stars of the three previous “Star Trek” installments in the Abrams-verse would all be returning, although it was later reported that the actors had not entered negotiations to return.

In 2022 Shakman left “Star Trek” to join Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four.” But just last month Steve Yockey was hired to write a fourth “Star Trek” movie.

Now, we are finally getting word of another film in development, with another writer/director team. But it’s not the first time that a “Star Trek” prequel script has been floated, as Erik Jendresen, cowriter of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” had submitted a script for “Star Trek: The Beginning” before J.J. had taken over and pitched his 2009 version. It depicted the Earth-Romulan War.

A Star Trek Origin Movie Is Coming in 2025 From 'Andor' and 'Doctor Who' Director Toby Haynes

'Star Trek' (2009) director J.J. Abrams is attached to produce.

The Big Picture

  • A new Star Trek prequel film, an "origin story", is in development, at Paramount.
  • The Star Trek history before Kirk's missions on the Enterprise is largely unwritten, leaving room for creativity with the new film.
  • Director Toby Haynes, known for Andor , is working on the film alongside writer Seth Grahame-Smith; a 2025 release window was announced at CinemaCon.

Star Trek may finally be coming back to the big screen. A prequel to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of the franchise is in the works from director Toby Haynes . The news comes from Paramount's presentation at CinemaCon today, as reported by Collider's Steve Weintraub and Britta DeVore . With Haynes, who recently helmed six episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor , at the rudder, the film will be written by Seth Grahame-Smith .

So far, other details on the new film are scarce, but it will reportedly be an "origin story", taking place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film, which took place in 2255. That likely means that it will not feature the cast from the 2009 reboot, which has so far been difficult for Paramount to wrangle together for a fourth film, despite numerous attempts to do so . That doesn't necessarily mean that a fourth movie isn't happening: back in March, Paramount hired The Flight Attendant scribe Steve Yockey to pen a new script for the film. For their part, the cast is game as well, with Zoe Saldaña recently stating her willingness to return for a fourth mission on the USS Enterprise .

What Happened Decades Before Kirk's First Missions on the Enterprise?

The history of the Star Trek universe prior to the celebrated voyages of the Enterprise is largely unwritten. The first starship Enterprise 's adventures in the 22nd century were chronicled on the UPN prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise . That series ended with the founding of the United Federation of Planets in 2161, which leaves almost a century of mostly unexplored history between that and the history now being charted on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (and the first two seasons of mothership show Star Trek: Discovery ).

At some point, the nascent Federation faces a devastating war against the Romulan Star Empire , while also engaged in a Cold War with the Klingons. The USS Enterprise will eventually be launched in the 23rd century, under the captaincy of Robert April, who has been briefly glimpsed on Star Trek: The Animated Series and Strange New Worlds , before being handed off to Christopher Pike . Apart from that, however, Haynes and Graeme-Smith have a near-blank canvas upon which to make their mark.

In addition to Andor , Haynes has also helmed episodes of Doctor Who , Sherlock , and Black Mirror ; his work on the latter series includes the episode " USS Callister ," a loving pastiche of Star Trek . Graeme-Smith wrote the novels Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter ; he worked on the story for the upcoming horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice .

A new Star Trek prequel film is in development; no date has yet been set beyond a 2025 release window . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds renewed for a fourth season

S tar Trek: Strange New Worlds is still in production for the third season of the successful series, and we won't see that season until at some point next year. But that hasn't stopped Paramount from newing the series for a fourth season. This doesn't come as a surprise, though, as Strange New Worlds has been getting early renewals since its inception, and now, this will give the writing team and producers plenty of time to create more unique stories which we likely won't see until 2027.

With the cancellation of both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks after five seasons, it's comforting to know we'll still have Strange New Worlds airing new episodes. Along with that, viewers can tune into Star Trek: Prodigy which is set to launch its second season on Netflix sometime this year.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped its second season, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew had encountered the deadly Gorn again. The first time they'd battled these aliens, Hemmer, the chief engineer, sacrificed himself upon revealing the Gorn had laid eggs in his body. He couldn't risk the baby Gorns getting loose aboard the ship. When season two ended, another Starfleet member was in jeopardy, Captain Batel had also been infected with the Gorn, but Captain Pike wasn't willing to give up on her without a fight.

The Gorn appear to be Strange New Worlds' Borg—deadly and just as nearly invincible. So it's safe to assume we'll continue to see them in future episodes. With this renewal of the series, I can only imagine what the writers will cook up for the Enterprise crew. Whatever it is, though, as long as it's as good as the past two seasons, Strange New Worlds will undoubtedly continue its journey for the forseeable future.

Star trek origin movie officially announced by paramount for 2025 release.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie at CinemaCon, which will arrive in movie theaters in 2025.

  • Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek movie for 2025, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
  • Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 remains in development, while the new film is an origin story set decades before Abrams' 2009 movie.
  • Alongside the Star Trek origin movie, Paramount reveals a packed slate of exciting films for 2025-26 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Screen Rant' s Rob Keyes (@rob_keyes) is at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where Paramount Pictures confirmed the next Star Trek movie , currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story , to be released in 2025. J.J. Abrams is also producing Untitled Star Trek Origin Story, which takes place decades before Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie. See Rob Keyes' Tweet below:

Paramount also confirmed Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production later this year for theatrical release in 2025.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek's new movies in theaters and paramount plus explained, star trek is finally making movies again.

After nearly a decade, Star Trek i s back to making movies. Star Trek on Paramount+ has created a television renaissance for the franchise, but the theatrical side of Star Trek overseen by Paramount Pictures has languished in development hell since Star Trek Beyond bowed in the summer of 2016. Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

New Star Trek Prequel Movie Is Officially Official, Andor And Black Mirror Director Confirmed

Star Trek (2009), Enterprise

Captain's Log: Stardate 2024. It's been eight years since the USS Enterprise's last voyage on the big screen, with the franchise having since returned to its roots on television. During that period, the property has proliferated thanks to an influx of streaming series that's included everything from a "Next Generation" reunion to a raunchy cartoon and a wonderfully silly musical episode . But through it all, the question has lingered: when will Trekkies get to undertake another mission painted on the largest canvas available?

It's not been for lack of effort on Paramount's part. Ever since the commercial disappointment of 2016's "Star Trek Beyond" brought the escapades of the Kelvin Universe film series to a halt, the studio has cycled through one filmmaker after another in its quest to get "Star Trek" up and running in theaters once more. Most recently, it turned to "Black Mirror" director Toby Haynes to helm a new chapter based on a script by "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "The LEGO Batman Movie" scribe Seth Grahame-Smith. At the same time, Paramount has continued to try and mount a fourth and final chapter in the Kelvin Timeline story that began with J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009, having only barely recruited Steve Yockey ("The Flight Attendant") to work his magic on the screenplay.

Thankfully, we finally got an official update today during Paramount's CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas (which /Film's Ryan Scott was there to witness with his own two eyes). The studio confirmed that Haynes' film will usher in the franchise's long-awaited return to theaters while, apparently, also functioning as a prequel to the previous Kelvin Universe movies. Production will begin later this year.

Star Trek will boldly go before it's never gone before

Literally winding back the clock for a mission is common practice in "Star Trek," so much so that the property even has a strict set of rules covering all the do's and don'ts of time travel (lest anyone step on a butterfly and wipe James Kirk out of existence). Prequels, on the other hand, only really came into vogue in the 2000s with the one-two punch of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and Abrams' film, the latter of which also introduced the alternate timeline known as the Kelvin Universe. Now, much as its big screen reboot 15 years ago served to reinvigorate the franchise while also appealing to a new generation of Trekkies, it's possible Paramount's goal here is for Haynes' prequel to revive the Kelvin series before bringing the main cast back while at the same time offering a jumping-on point for those who're new(ish) to the whole trekking across space thing.

Haynes' movie itself has previously been described as an "origin story" for "Star Trek" at large , which certainly supports the idea of it functioning as a soft reset without actually wiping out any earlier continuity (just like Abrams' movie). The director, for his part, has already demonstrated an appreciation for the property with his acclaimed "Black Mirror" episode "USS Callister" — a darkly satirical take on "Star Trek" tropes and toxic fandom — while his work on the "Star Wars" series "Andor" proves he's more than up for the task of taking a beloved sci-fi property and subverting it in fresh and exhilarating ways. With a little luck, these past eight years will prove to be more than worth the wait.

Keep it tuned to /Film for further updates on anything and everything "Star Trek."
