Odyssey III: Refurbish and Re-engine on the Potomac
By Alan Haig-Brown April 11, 2019
There are many fine and elegant places to dine in Washington DC, but few offer the comfort and opulence to match the M/V Odyssey III. Her sleek, low profile superstructure designed to pass under the Potomac River bridges contains enough space to provide all the essentials of a grand evening. Cocktails, dinner, dancing and perhaps most importantly, the beauty and romance of watching the city lights from the deck of a boat on the serene river surface.
At 240 by 63-feet the Odyssey III’s deck provides ample space for a large group of people and a range of entertaining activities on her single deck configuration. Built in 1995 the steel-hulled vessel has entertained thousands of people while serving Washingtonians and their guests well. For 2019, her owners, decided to give her a spectacular $2.2 million renovation.
The renovation included upgraded amenities such as the remodeled dance floor and bar space, new carpets, new fixtures and finishes. These are the all important public face of a dinner cruise boat, but the owners went well beyond the cosmetic. A pair of tired 540 HP Cat 3412TAs were pulled out and replaced with a pair of electronic-controlled Tier 3 compliant Cummins QSK19 mains delivering 600 HP at 1800 RPM into Twindisc MGX-5170DC gears with 4.5:1 reduction.
At the same time, the original two generator sets, one 537 kW and one 350 kW, were replaced with two Cummins QSK19-powered 530 kW generators. With generator power equal to main propulsion power, this is clearly a luxurious dinner cruise boat. She has ample power for moving on the river and ample power for entertaining the guests whether they be dinning, dancing or just relaxing.
The repower of the Odyssey III was carried out at the 1875-founded Colonna’s Shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia. With both travel lifts and a floating dry dock, the full-service yard can handle vessels up to 875 feet in length.
When in DC, cruising the Potomac takes on a whole new dimension thanks to Entertainment Cruises, North America’s largest dining and sightseeing cruise company.

Excellent Dinner Cruise on Odyssey III
Entertainment Cruises boat Odessey III provides meal and sightseeing cruises on the Potomac in the Washington D C area. Odessey III is a long (over 200 ft) low (less than 17 ft) vessel that is mostly a glassed in dining room. it is so low so that it can fit under the 14th Street bridge, making it possible to cruise up toward Georgetown. I believe it does both lunch and dinner cruises. We enjoyed the dinner cruise. The cruise has dedicated parking at the head of the docks. A short walk brings you to the brow, leading on to the boat. Crew members and staff greet guests along the way, and provide guidance if needed. We were shown to our table, and found that we, like everyone else, had an excellent view through the large deck to overhead windows. Our server was prompt and helpful. Our food was excellent, and we particularly recommend the Seafood Tower appetizer. The wine list adequate. The boat has a bar and can serve cocktails. It being a celebratory event for us, we had champagne, which was very good. We cruised up to Georgetown, but made the return bit earlier due to a higher than normal tide that night. Even after they crank down the masts, there is not much clearance under the 14th Street Bridge. Our Captain used the extra time to explore other parts of waterfront, to the distant cheering at Nationals stadium. On the way back, a talented live band provided dance music in the dining room, and many people took advantage of the dance floor. Being former Navy, I have had first hand experience with docking large vessels, and I must say i was very impressed with the Captain's skill in putting this boat alongside. Overall, it was well worth the cost of a ticket. Good food, courteous and pleasant staff and crew, and a great cruise. Highly recommended.
This was a great way to travel to Mt. Vernon and there was ample time to stroll the grounds, have lunch and visit the gift store! The shuttle from the pier to the estate was welcomed as the walkway is uphill, but it's not far if you want to take the walk.
From the time we arrived on the cruise ship to when we left our expectations were taken to a new level. The staff was over the top! Such a wonderful way to celebrate any special occasion with family or friends. The food was awesome as well as the service. The entertainment was great!
The atmosphere was very nice with live music and well-prepared buffet. We came for the Mimosa Brunch, and the staff was very attentive - clearing our plates and keeping our glasses full, even when we went out on the deck to take pictures of the view. The interior is comparable to a cruise ship - I would have dressed-up a bit, if I had read about attire on the web site. The timing (2-hr cruise) is just right for a meal and a view of the attractions usually seen from land. My family enjoyed the time spent together.
I took my wife out for a night of something different. The service was spot-on as the servers always made sure we had what we needed and/or wanted, also advising us on what was not included in the price. Both me and my wife enjoyed the food as well. Now the reason for the 4 instead of the 5. The music ... for one it was so loud where we were seated that me and my wife had to almost yell to talk to each other. In the beginning it was strictly music from the band and after that some talented ladies who belted out some serious tunes, albeit extremely loudly. Then secondly, you better like old soul/rhythm and blues, because it is virtually the only music played and sang. I would have liked a little more variety. But, to end the cruise up a Nationals game had been played on the night of the cruise and the the boat held station in the river by the stadium to watch a nice fireworks display. Very awesome and totally unexpected.
This is so much better than the cruise on the Dandy two years ago. The food is much better and the boat much better maintained. The music on the Odyssey is high quality, initially a trio which played before and during the dinner service, which included a vegan GF option. Then the volume was very appropriate to dining and conversation. Our only complaint was that the volume went way, way up when a talented female vocalist joined them for the rest of the evening. Quite a set of pipes! Turn down the mike because louder is not better! We spent the remainder of the evening on the promenade. Fortunately, the weather wascperfect. The servers were beyond competant and helpful and should be tipped accordingly, they work a full busy shift year round. The restrooms, like the rest of the boat, were spotless. Pricey, but try for a Groupon or other deal and you'll be sure to feel satisfied.
