New Meetings and Events Will Pump $200M into Metro Detroit’s Economy

visit detroit annual meeting

Visit Detroit today announced nearly 100 new meetings and sporting events worth more than $200 million are headed to the region this year and beyond.

The private, not-for-profit organization that seeks to draw conventions and events to metro Detroit also unveiled a national marketing campaign to highlight the new business.

The “Detroit Wins” campaign, unveiled at Visit Detroit’s Annual Partnership Meeting, highlights all of the new meetings and sports booked during the COVID-19 pandemic and will consist of advertising in high-profile publications such as The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, beginning this week.

It will be supported by public relations efforts and more announcements of business that is expected to be finalized throughout the year.

Claude Molinari, president and CEO of Visit Detroit, says the Detroit Wins campaign is a way of letting other meeting planners and sports organizers know that the city and region are open for business and that other marquee events have shown their confidence by committing to bring their event.

“In this next year, we will welcome a huge volume of high-profile conventions and sporting events, generating about 115,000 room nights. Two of those events — the American Bus Association and CONNECT — have the potential to bring several more future events because their attendees organize and plan events,” Molinari says.

Meetings, conventions, and sporting events mean big business for metro Detroit. Tourism and hospitality employment prior to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed 463,000 direct jobs to the metro Detroit economy and it was ranked as one of the largest industries in the region and statewide.

Among the other meetings on the books are the Automate Conference, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy, National Science Teaching Association, International Women’s Forum, Women of Color Stem Conference, United States Bowling Congress, Special Olympics, and many more.

Molinari adds the campaign is intended to encourage local residents to consider bringing their own company meetings as well as their social, fraternal, and association meetings to the region.

What’s more, the city has gained traction as a popular cruise ship stop on the Great Lakes and will welcome 42 port arrivals in 2022, including Viking Cruise Lines, the largest and most recognized river cruise line.

Michigan State Football Head Coach Mel Tucker was the keynote speaker at the Annual Partnership meeting and discussed how to motivate a team, or an organization, and emerge a winner. The meeting also featured three planners from conventions and sports groups headed to Detroit: CONNECT, American Bus Association, and the NCAA who discussed their upcoming events and how the hospitality community can prepare.

For a complete list of conventions and sporting events coming to Detroit, visit here . To view the Detroit Wins video, visit here .

Visit Detroit markets and sells metro Detroit area on a worldwide basis as a destination for leisure and business travel, including conventions, trade shows, corporate meetings, tours, and incentive travel to maximize additional visitors, visitor expenditures, state and local tax revenues, and job opportunities.

Nearly 700 businesses are represented in the Visit Detroit membership. The agency was founded in 1896 as the world’s first convention and visitors bureau.

Ortonville Village Council rejects permit for pride festival

ORTONVILLE, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - For two years, the nonprofit Abigail's Pride has held its annual pride festival in the town of Ortonville. The turnout has attracted hundreds of people.

This year, the Village Council denied the group's permit for the June event. This is a decision that's left the group's founder ready to take action.

"My heart sank. I was shocked at the fact that they denied it. In years past, we've been approved unanimously," said Abigail Rowe, founder of Abigail's Pride.

For 18-year-old Rowe, the annual pride festival held each year in Ortonville is more than just an event. It's a safe and inclusive environment for folks, especially youth, part of the LGBTQ+ community.

"It's walking up and down these streets in Ortonville and seeing people smiling and wearing their rainbows, and couples that I know at school holding hands for the first time in public. It's a really great feeling," Rowe said.

Rowe was only 14 years old when she created the nonprofit Abigail's Pride.

"I had just come out in November of 2020 and I really wanted to go to a pride festival very bad, but there were none close to me. I said somebody should buck up and plan one here," said Rowe.

The festival has been a success the past few years and the group has been eager for its next pride festival planned for June 1.

However, in a February 26 meeting, things took a turn. For the first time, the Ortonville Village Council rejected the organization's permit expressing concerns with safety, road closures, and the impact on local businesses when streets are closed. A decision that does not sit well with Rowe.

"Immediately following that denial of our permit, they approved two other events that have more roads closed, and one of them actually has the roads closed for 7 hours longer than our event does," Rowe said.

A special meeting was scheduled for March 13 but has since been canceled.

Ortonville Village Manager Ryan Madis issued the following statement:

"The Village is aware of the statement made and is eager to review another Special Event Permit from the Abigail's Pride group. As discussed during the February 26 meeting, Village Council members expressed concerns with safety and road closures, as well as the impact to local businesses and residents when closing the streets for special events. The Village's process provides different levels of review for taxing entities and non-profit or for-profit entities, as well. Still, the Village Council will consider further information and review it prior to its next meeting. The Special Meeting that was called for March 13 has been canceled, but the Village Council will take up the Special Event Permit for Abigail's Pride during its March 25 2024 meeting. We look forward to continuing to work with Abigail's Pride and to finding a beneficial outcome for all parties."

"I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If they deny it again, citing the road closures while approving other events, it reeks of homophobia," Rowe said.

Rowe said Abigail's Pride has revised the permit adding the addition of portable restrooms and trash bins, some of the issues the council cited initially. The group also included letters of support from businesses in downtown Ortonville, organizations across Oakland County, and many Ortonville residents.

If it's denied again by the council at the March 25 meeting , the search for a new venue will begin.

In White House visit, Polish president pushes NATO to ramp up spending, calls on US to fund Ukraine

WASHINGTON – Polish President Andrzej Duda used a joint White House visit with his political rival, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, on Tuesday to call on NATO allies to significantly increase defense spending and press a divided Washington to break its impasse over replenishing funds for Ukraine at a critical moment in the war in Europe.

Duda wants members of the NATO alliance to raise their spending on defense to 3% of their GDP as Russia puts its own economy on a war footing and pushes forward with its plans to conquer Ukraine. Poland already spends 4% of its own economic output on defense, double the current target of 2% for NATO nations.

The Polish leader made the call as he and Tusk visited Washington to mark their country's 25th anniversary of joining the now 32-member transatlantic military alliance. It was a historic step into the West after breaking free from Moscow’s sphere of influence after decades of communist rule.

“Russia's aggression against Ukraine really demonstrated that United States is and should remain the security leader,” Duda said. “But other allies must take more responsibility for the security of the alliance as a whole. Two percent was good 10 years ago. Now 3% is required in response for the full scale war launched by Russia right beyond NATO's eastern border.”

Biden called the U.S. commitment to Poland ironclad and marveled at Poland's current defense spending and thanked the leaders for taking in hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees after Russia launched the February 2022 invasion. But he did not directly address Duda's call for NATO members to ramp up spending.

“When we stand together, no force on earth is more powerful,” Biden said, recalling the words of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright upon Poland's accession into the alliance. ”I believed that then and I believe that now. And we see it with Polish and American troops serving side by side with NATO on the eastern flank, including in Poland."

Biden administration officials, however, suggested ahead of the meeting that Duda’s call to raise the defense spending target for NATO countries may be, at least for the time being, overly ambitious.

"I think the first step is to get every country meeting the 2% threshold, and we’ve seen improvement of that,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. “But I think that’s the first step before we start talking about an additional proposal.”

The visit also comes amid a standoff in Washington between Biden, a Democrat, and House Republicans on Ukraine funding. House Republicans have blocked a $118 billion bipartisan package that includes $60 billion in Ukraine funding, as well as funds for Israel, Taiwan and U.S. border security.

The Pentagon announced Tuesday it will rush about $300 million in weapons to Ukraine after finding some cost savings in its contracts. It’s the Biden administration's first announced security package for Ukraine since December, when it acknowledged it was out of replenishment funds.

Biden said the funding is not nearly enough, and pointed to Poland's own history to argue for further further funding.

“We must act before it literally is too late.” Biden said. “Because as Poland remembers, Russia won’t stop at Ukraine. Putin will keep going, putting Europe, the United States and the entire free world at risk.”

Duda met with U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday before the White House meeting. and offered a blunt warning: If the U.S. does not deliver military aid to halt Russia’s advance, Poland will be on the frontlines of a conflict that involves European and American troops.

“Financial support for Ukraine is cheap if you take into account what other forms of support would be needed if it comes to war and to an attack on NATO countries,” Duda said.

Tusk after the White House meeting called on Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to pass Ukraine funding, warning him that inaction could “cost thousands of human lives in Ukraine.”

“This is not some political skirmish that has significance only here, on the American political stage,” Tusk said.

Johnson, who was among the lawmakers who met with Duda, said in a statement, that “America must remain united with our friends against those who threaten our security.”

Biden informed the leaders that the U.S. plans to move forward with a foreign military financing loan that will help Poland purchase 96 Apache helicopters. The State Department approved the sale last year.

The visit offered Biden another opportunity to showcase how his view of NATO contrasts with that of the likely 2024 Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump.

Trump has said that when he was president, he warned NATO allies that he “would encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that are “delinquent” in meeting the alliance's defense spending target. White House press secretary

Fear is deepening across Europe about Ukraine's fate as its ammunition stocks run low and as Russia makes gains on the battlefield in Ukraine, reversing its weak military performance at the start of a war launched in February 2022.

Tusk said that despite political divisions in Poland the country is unified on the issues of security, Russia and Ukraine and wishes the same were true for other allies.

“When we Poles started on our road to the West, Pope John Paul II said there could be no just Europe without an independent Poland,” Tusk said “And today, I would say there can be no safe Europe without a strong Poland. And of course I would also say there could be no just Europe without a free and independent Ukraine.”

It is the first time in a quarter-century for a Polish president and prime minister to be in Washington at the same time and the first for both leaders to be welcomed at the White House at the same time, according to Polish media. The gesture by the bitter political rivals is widely seen as an acknowledgment of the seriousness of this historical moment, with Russian strength growing as that of Ukraine wanes.

Duda, aligned with a national conservative party that lost power last year, used his power to delay the transition to a new government under Tusk by weeks.

Tusk won power after promising to restore democratic norms that eroded under the last government and Poland has been hailed by many across Europe as one of the only places where growing authoritarianism has been reversed in recent times.

“No matter matter who wins the election in our country we treat our obligation seriously, more than anyone else in Europe,” Tusk said.
