A Complete Guide to Colombia’s Monserrate Bogotá Hike

March 14, 2024 August 4, 2023

If you want the best views of Bogotá, Colombia , you better work. The Monserrate Bogotá hike is the best way to get a bird’s-eye-view of the city’s sprawling landscape .

While a funicular will take you up there with much less effort, you’ll miss quite a bit of fun along the way. I’m talking about donkeys but also puppies and high-altitude tchotchkes .

I swear it’s all more exciting than I’m even describing it. If you’re able, lace up those hiking shoes and hit the pavement for some Bogotá hiking.

Is Monserrate worth it?

Monserrate is definitely worth it, especially if you’re able to hike Mount Monserrate, or Cerro de Monserrate. The journey to the top is a mix of a physical challenge with cultural immersion in a South American city that is so often misunderstood.

Seriously, I’d like to become Bogotá’s personal hype squad if possible.

Views from the top of the Monseratte Bogota hike

Hiking up Monserrate in Bogotá allows the city to reveal itself bit by bit. You’ll see its grit set against the backdrop of the Andes, and it’s pretty powerful stuff.

At the peak, you’ll get to visit the Sanctuary of Monserrate, a mountaintop church that speaks to the resilience of the Colombian people. Many of the local people aren’t here for a day trip up a mountain, but to visit this place for spiritual reflection .

How to Get to Monserrate Bogotá

A man stands at the entrance of the Monseratte Bogota hike.

To get to Monserrate in Bogotá, you need to get to the base of the mountain, first. We took an Uber from our hotel in Zona Rosa without incident.

It’s worth mentioning here that Uber operates within a gray area in Colombia. While the courts ruled that ride-sharing services were illegal in Colombia in 2020, Uber continues to operate as a car service, instead, a form of transport still allowed across Colombia.

It feels sketchy until you realize how easy, convenient, and cheap it is to order an Uber over taxi services. There’s zero negotiating compared to cabs, something I really hate in big cities across South America.

That all said, I’d still avoid taking an Uber to or from the airport. That’s where you’ll see most of the city’s enforcement efforts against rideshare services.

Fun fact: Most hotels will offer an affordable car service to get you there or pick you up at the start of your journey.

Once you’re at the Monserrate Bogotá hike starting point, you have more options. I’ve already mentioned this in passing, but you can take a funicular or cable car from Carrera 2 up to the top if you’re not interested in walking or hiking.

Tickets are available online ahead of your trip for under 7 USD per person on all days but Sundays. Sunday tickets are a little less expensive to account for the pilgrimage aspects of travel up the mountain.

I’d highly recommend hiking the urban trail all the way up the mountain as an alternative. The hike is all self-guided, so you can go at your own pace.

How long does it take to walk up Monserrate Bogotá?

It takes at least an hour to walk up Monserrate Bogotá. The descent will be much faster, but you should budget at least three hours for the full experience.

You’ll want lots of photo stops along the way and at the top, along with potential refreshments.

How hard is the hike to Monserrate Bogotá?

The hike to Monserrate Bogotá is a hard hike. AllTrails says so, and I say so. It’s over 2,600 feet of elevation gain over just 3.2 miles roundtrip.

Exactly how hard it is depends on you. Your fitness level and pace matter, but this is also a high-altitude hike.

A woman tries to catch her breathe on the Monseratte Bogota hike.

This was our third day in Bogotá and I was still feeling queasy. Take your time and don’t try to show off like the locals in bike shorts. Start early in the morning on warm-weather days and bring plenty of water.

Note: The trail opens by 5am but  is closed after 1pm for safety reasons. The funicular operates later, but expect long lines by midday.

Is it safe to walk up Monserrate?

It is safe to walk up Monserrate. Safety in Bogotá in general has developed a bad reputation, but we never felt unsafe on our trek up the mountain.

You will see police and security guards along the path all the way up but don’t feel unsettled by that. They’re here to protect you from potential pickpockets and act as a deterrent until 1pm when the trail closes to hikers.

The path was also quite crowded on our visit, so you never feel as if you’re hiking alone. Crowds can often mean more potential for petty crime, but there was never a moment where we had to get close to other hikers along a narrow path.

I’d say the biggest worry for hikers on this one is the physicality involved. This is a fairly demanding hike at elevation, so it’s not recommended for beginners.

Note: I wouldn’t do this one in inclement weather, either. It’s all paved, so could get slick in steep sections.

What to Expect on Your Monserrate Bogotá Hike

Hiking Monserrate is popular for locals and visitors alike for the payoff at the top, but it’s also a fun way to immerse yourself in Colombian culture.

You’ll see plenty of fitness buffs jogging up the hill without a care in the world, but keep your eyes peeled for critters along the way, too.

Fun fact: You’ll share the trail with donkeys, pups, hummingbirds, and chickens, and they’re all very cute.

A dog rests on a Monseratte Bogota hike.

I imagine the donkeys are there to rescue tourists who bit off more than they can chew and have some money to throw at an easier way up. I just admired how majestic they looked up there.

A donkey poses at the top of the Monseratte Bogota hike.

You’ll also encounter shops along the way selling snacks and water in case you forgot your own. Many of them boast some pretty grand views along the way, so feel free to stop and take it all in if you need a breather.

I took lots and lots of breathers.

What is on top of Monserrate?

On top of Monserrate, you’ll be treated to an impressive view of the city below. For locals, the Sanctuary of Monserrate at the top is arguably more important than all of that.

The church at the top of the Monseratte Bogota hike

This is where you’ll find El Señor Caído, or the shrine to The Fallen Lord, a statue that represents an important religious encounter.

The church is why so many devotees make the trek up the hill on holy days, and why Sunday is such a popular time to summit Monserrate.

Inside the church at the top of the Monseratte Bogota hike

If you worked up an appetite and ignored the vendors along the way, there’s a restaurant at the top of the mountain, too. We didn’t indulge in the Restaurante Casa Santa Clara, but I’ve read that it’s a decent stop for Colombian snacks.

Here for the tchotchkes? That’s interesting, but you do you. You’ll find some shops up here, too.

Interesting Facts About Monserrate

Oh, you like fun facts, do you? Here are a few more interesting things to know about Monserrate:

  • Montserrat is named after the Barcelona mountain with the same name. That one is home to an ancient monastery, so the vibes fit.
  • The church has been at the top since the 17th century, but it was used as a religious retreat before then by the Cofradia de la Vera Cruz, or the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz.
  • Even before then, the mountaintop was considered sacred to the indigenous Muisca because the sun rose directly behind it. This continued until years of Spanish invasion and colonization.
  • The Muisca people called the mountain “grandmother’s foot.” I have no idea why, and neither does the internet, but it’s related to their understanding of astronomy.
  • Inclement weather is dangerous in these parts. The climb to the top was most recently reopened in 2017 after a number of years of recovery following wildfires and mudslides.

Where to Stay in Bogotá

If you’re looking for the best area to stay while in Bogotá, I’d highly recommend Zona Rosa. We stayed at the  GHL Hotel Hamilton  and it was great for proximity to restaurants, nightlife, and accessibility to transportation.

We felt safe there, too, which is something I just can’t say about the city’s main tourist center after dark.

Hiking Monserrate Bogotá: FAQs

How much does it cost to climb monserrate.

It costs nothing to climb Monserrate. If you’re on a budget and love working hard for a good view, it’s a good alternative to the cable car. That said, the funicular is only about 7 USD roundtrip (27,000 COP) per person. There’s no discount for one-way rides.

When should I go to Monserrate?

You should go to Monserrate early in the morning if you plan on hiking to the top.

We completed the hike on a Friday morning and didn’t feel too bad as far as crowds. This trail gets super crowded on weekends, and Sundays are slammed thanks to church services at the chapel at the top.

As far as seasons, Bogotá is cool and dry for much of the year because it sits at elevation. September and October are generally the wettest months in Colombia.

How many steps is Monserrate Bogotá?

How many steps you’ll climb to get to the top of Monserrate Bogotá depends on your route, but the most popular way involves over 1,600 steps.

Take it slow and try not to think about it too much.

What should I wear and bring for the hike up Monserrate?

You should wear sunscreen, layers, and rain gear in case of inclement weather to hike up Monserrate. Bring plenty of water and some cash in case you run out. If you get hangry, pack some snacks, too.

How long is the funicular ride to Monserrate?

The funicular ride to Monserrate is just seven minutes long.

Why is the Cerro de Monserrate popular?

The Cerro de Monserrate is popular for its views of the city and spiritual significance. It’s also a popular fitness route for locals looking for a challenging but rewarding hike.

While once is enough for me, I’m so glad we made time for the climb during our own trip to Bogotá . Those Monserrate Bogotá views are truly breathtaking, and I don’t think it was just the altitude.

The Ultimate Guide to Discovering Cerro De Monserrate, Colombia

Monserrate cable car

The mountain of Cerro de Monserrate rises over downtown Bogotá , dominating the skyline of Colombia ‘s capital. A church high up on the mountain is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, while taking in the view from the summit is a must-do tourist activity . Here’s our ultimate guide.

Monserrate has been considered an important sacred place since before the arrival of the Spanish: the local Muisca indigenous people called the mountain quijicha caca , or ‘grandmother’s foot’, and considered it important to their religious traditions, due to the fact that the sun rises directly behind the mountain during the solstice in June. This is visible from the modern Plaza Bolivar and is thought to be why the first cathedral of the city was constructed there.

During the colonial period a religious group known as the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz asked for permission to build a small religious retreat on the top of the mountain, which they named after the Morena Virgin of Montserrat, near Barcelona . Over time, the saint statue which had been the principal religious attraction of Monserrate was replaced in significance by El Señor Caído(‘The Fallen Lord’), a figure of Jesus which has been removed from its cross. The shrine of El Señor Caído remains the principal reason for believers to visit the church of Monserrate today.

Visiting Monserrate

As all of downtown and south Bogotá, and large sections of the north, are visible from the top of Monserrate, it is a hugely popular place to visit to enjoy unparalleled views over the city, particularly at sunset. There are several different ways to reach the top of the mountain, including by cable car, funicular railway, and on foot.

The view of Bogotá from Monserrate

Cable car: The cable car operates from Monday to Sunday (excluding Monday holidays) and costs up to 20,000 COP (US$6.67) for a return journey – except on Sundays when the costs drops to 11,000 COP (US$3.67).

Funicular railway: The funicular railway operates between Tuesday and Sunday, and is operational on holidays, unlike the cable car. The costs are the same as taking the cable car, with similar discounts on Sundays, and for people over 62-years-old. Both journeys are short, although the cable car offers more spectacular views on the way up. Exact prices – as well as any changes to opening hours – can be found on the Monserrate website .

On foot: Hiking to the top of the mountain is another option for visitors. It’s not a hike for the faint-hearted: the church sits at 3,150 meters (10,335 feet) above sea level – a gain of some 400 meters (1,312 feet) in altitude from the starting point. It takes roughly an hour, but it’s worth giving yourself plenty of time for the hike, not only for the difficulty of the altitude but also to enjoy the nature along the trail. Walking the trail is free, and the path is open every day (apart from Tuesdays when it’s closed), between 5am-1pm to go up, and 5am-4pm to come back down.

A popular option is to take transport to the top, and then walk down – regardless of how you choose to visit Monserrate, it’s up there with the best tourist attractions in Bogotá and is one of the city’s unmissable sights.

Planning Your Visit to Monserrate

The Cerro de Monserrate dominates the skyline above the center of Bogotá.   The hill was considered sacred by the indigenous Muisca people, in part because the sun rises directly behind the mountain on the Summer Solstice.

Spanish colonists began climbing the mountain as a pilgrimage in the 1620s.  Eventually a group of men received permission to build a small hermitage for religious retreats atop the hill .  They decided to devote their sanctuary to the Morena Virgin, whose sanctuary in Spain was located in the mountains of Montserrat outside of Barcelona.  Therefore, the hill took its name as Monserrate.

The sanctuary also contained a shrine with a sculpture of Jesus Christ after having been beaten and fallen.  Known as “ El Se˜ñor Caído (or Fallen Lord),” this sculpture’s fame soon surpassed that of the Morena Virgin and became the main attraction for pilgrims.

Today, the church still houses the statue and remains a place for religious pilgrimage as well as one of Bogotá’s most famous tourist attractions.

How to Get to the Top of Monserrate Hill

You have 3 options for how to get to the top of Cerro Monserrate.

Option 1:  Funicular Train Car

The funicular train car is how we’ve gone up both times we have visited Monserrate.  It operates from 5:30 to 11:45 am.   It takes about 5 minutes or so to climb the hill in what feels almost like a slow motion roller coaster.

Option 2:  Cable Car

You can also get to the top of the hill of Monserrate by hanging cable car.  The cable cars operate from 11:45 am to 12 midnight.   I’m sure the views you get from the cars are spectacular.

Option 3:  Walk

You can also take a walking path up the hill.  This option is of course for those who want to get some good exercise during their visit to the Cerro Monserrate.  It opens at 5 am and the last entry to ascend the hill is at 1 pm.  After 4 pm, you cannot descend on the walking path.  It is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.

What to See Atop Monserrate Hill

Walk the stations of the cross.

Ok, once you are at the top, don’t do like we did and head up the left side of the path towards the chapel.  Follow the right hand side of the path, where you can walk through the 14 Stations of the Cross, which heads up to the chapel at a much more comfortable incline.   There are also some pretty gardens along the way and ample bird sighting chances .

The church continues to house the shrine to El Señor Caído .   Inside, you can see the ornate decorations as well as the sculpture of El Señor Caído .

Enjoy the Incredible Views of Bogotá

Photo of the city of Bogotá taken from the top of Cerro Monserrate

Alongside the chapel atop the hill of Monserrate, you can get some incredible views of Bogotá.   The hill stands 3,152 meters (10,341 feet) above sea level , and the city’s buildings look small so far below.

Colombia’s largest city, and one of the 5 largest in the Western Hemisphere, you can see the city stretching across the plateau below.  Seeing it from so high puts the city’s size in perspective.  It’s a very pretty sight seeing it nestled amongst the mountains .  We have only been in the morning, but the sunset over the city is also supposed to be spectacular.

You can also get a view of the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the adjacent  Cerro de Guadalupe .

Have a Coffee, Hot Chocolate, or Snack at the Restaurant

There is a restaurant on site next to the chapel.  A coffee or hot chocolate is a great accompaniment to the chilliness of Bogotá, particularly if it’s a cloudy day.  You can also get an arepa or other snacks, or even have lunch.

Check Out the Handicrafts

There is also a row of artisan handicraft shops behind the chapel.  While most of these things you can find cheaper elsewhere in the city, you may want to pick up a souvenir or two here.

Photo of the Funicular Station, one of the ways to get to the top of Monserrate hill.

Hours and Prices

The park and sanctuary are open 365 days a year from 5:30 am to 12 midnight.   If you have a preferred manner of going up or down, be sure to check out the schedules noted above for the different ways to get to the top of Monserrate.  Prices for each are listed below: (*Last updated July 2019)

  • Roundtrip Monday to Saturday:  21,000 pesos.
  • Roundtrip Sunday:  12,000 pesos.
  • Note you can buy one way tickets if you plan to come down a different way, the prices are slightly more than half of the above.

Tips on Your Visit to Monserrate

  • The lines can get long, but they generally move pretty quickly.
  • The Christmas and Easter lights at Monserrate are supposed to be beautiful, so if you’re visiting around the holidays you may want to plan to visit at night (or to see the sunset and hang out for the lights).
  • The holidays will of course also be the most crowded times.
  • It is up high, so even on the warmer days in Bogotá, it’s a good idea to take along a jacket.
  • Keeping with the above, the altitude may make you breath a bit harder than normal (especially on the walk up to the chapel).  If you struggle with altitude sickness, it may be best to wait a day or two after you’ve adjusted to the city’s altitude before going up even higher to Monserrate.  Regardless, take it slow, and remember the incline of the path with the Stations of the Cross is easier than going straight to the chapel.
  • Pets are allowed for an additional fee.

Double check this info and find out more information at Monserrate’s Website (in English).

Tours to Monserrate

It is not necessary to do Monserrate with a tour.   You can just take a taxi to the foot of the hill and head up.  However, a tour can be a decent value if you want to fit in a lot in one day while also learning more about the city with a guide.  Below are a couple full day tour options that include a visit to the Cerro Monserrate.

Option 1:  Monserrate + La Candelaria + Gold Museum + Botero Museum (full day)

This tour takes you on a walking tour of La Candelaria historic district in Cartagena with stops at the Gold Museum, Botero Museum in addition to going up the Hill of Monserrate.  It includes private transportation to and from your hotel as well as all admission fees.

Book This Tour (via Viator)

Option 2:  Monserrate + Gold Museum (half day)

This half day tour will see you visit the Gold Museum and then go up to the top of Monserrate.  You will have a private bilingual guide along the way for both.  It includes transportation to most hotels as well as admission fees.

Welcome to the Monserrate, the symbol of Bogotá, a must-see among the must-sees, a mountain culminating at 3152 m above Colombia’s capital, with its basilica, a place of pilgrimage and meditation.

The Monserrate looks out over the immensity of a city stretching as far as the eye can see in a verdant valley. He plays hide-and-seek with clouds, mist and sun. You see me, you don’t.

Vigil, lighthouse, control tower of a capital monster. He’s the mirador maximus, the king of vantage points, the must-see. It is the need for elevation, the desire to stand back, the need for a horizon that grips us in the midst of the maze of gargantuan Babylon.

Take the high ground!

The Monserrate in Bogotá

Must-see in the colombian capital.

Visit Monserrate travel guide: experience the sunset over Bogota

Wherever you are in Bogotá, it’s impossible to miss the Monserrate. It’s a great landmark to help you find your way around the city, as it stands roughly above La Candelaria, Bogotá’s historic district.

The weather in Bogotá is temperamental. To put it mildly! We had in mind to enjoy the sunset from the Monserrate, so we had to be well connected to the weather so as not to miss out… the Monserrate often has its head in the clouds.

As we were staying with Angélica’s family in Chia, on the outskirts of Bogotá, we had to make sure we weren’t caught off guard by an untimely arrival of fog, which would have spoiled the party.

From Chia to Monserrate, it’s a two-hour journey, first the buseta, then the Transmilenio, then walking to the cable car, so we couldn’t improvise our ascent.

Of course, living in the center of town made it easier to adapt to the conditions and take advantage of a clear day to attempt the climb.

Visit Monserrate travel guide: experience the sunset over Bogota

We get off at the “Universidades” Transmilenio stop and walk up to the cable car station.

The white, sunlit basilica on its dark green summit is a beckoning sight. As we get closer to the foot of Monserrate, distances become more and more contorted. But nothing prepares us for what lies ahead.

Sprawling Bogota

View from the monserrate.

Visit Monserrate travel guide: experience the sunset over Bogota

It’s not until we’re inside the cable car, breaking away from a cow floor at 2640 m, that the sheer size of the capital jumps out at us.

The higher the glass cage rises to a summit at over 3,000 m, the more Bogotá swells before our eyes, stretching as far as the eye can see, like an immense river of stone and asphalt surrounded by majestic mountains.

At the top, it’s the immaculate, imposing basilica that dominates, but it’s the view of Bogotá that sucks you in. The few restaurants and tourist attractions can’t distract your attention.

Like a magnet, the landscape grabs you and won’t let go. A failed experience in Hong Kong or Taipei, an incredible memory in Caracas, Paris or San Francisco, dominating a sprawling city like Bogotá is one of the unforgettable experiences I like to have when traveling.

Visit Monserrate travel guide: experience the sunset over Bogota

On one side, nature, the forest, the surrounding peaks; on the other, the city, a shapeless, magnetic form. We take a seat on the parapet, and like many people around us, wait for the show to begin.

Be patient, let the needles turn and the light fall, and above all, don’t be tempted to come down too quickly – you’d be wrong to think you’ve seen it all!

Sunset over Bogota

When the monserrate becomes a show stage.

Visit Monserrate travel guide: experience the sunset over Bogota

The temperature is dropping fast, but fortunately we’re familiar with Bogotá’s weather and we’re well covered up, exploring the surrounding area in anticipation of the first flare-ups: at the side of the Basilica there’s a gallery offering a few souvenir stores and restaurants for a bite to eat.

The interior of the basilica itself is nothing exceptional.

Then the first colors appear in the sky, it’s time for the show, the bell rings for the last spectators, everyone takes their seats, it’s not too crowded, it’s the middle of the week, all that’s left is to contemplate what will remain one of my most beautiful travel memories.

From here on in, the images are worth all the words in the world, so I’ll let you enjoy!

How to get to Monserrate

During the day, if you’re in the neighborhood or nearby (Candelaria), you can walk up to the cable car station. This is best avoided in the evening, to prevent any problems.

Otherwise, the simplest solution is to take a cab to the funicular. For the return journey, even though we got off just after sunset, it wasn’t too late and we did it on foot, so we recommend taking a cab: it’s clearly the best solution.

Bogota: walking up to Monserrate

visit monserrate bogota

Walking up to Bogota´s Monserrate Monserrate , one of the city’s icons, and the nearby hike of the Rio San Francisco and historic museum of the Simón Bolívar’s house, La Quinta de Bolívar . POSTED APRIL, 2019 See related posts: – Riding Bogotá’s TransMiCable, – Bogotá’s super Ciclovia – Bogotá: a day trip to Ciudad Bolivar – Street art in Bogotá, – La Chorrera: Colombia’s highest waterfall – 1538: Bogotá’s conquest – Do you have an altitude problem?

Walking up to Bogota´s Monserrate

The religious sanctuary of Monserrate sits at 3,152 metres above Bogotá, roughly 600 metres above city street level, and 400 metres above the walking track entrance. The sanctuary is one of the city’s most obvious – and visited – attractions with throngs of people walking up the 1,500 steps on Sunday , some as pilgrimage to the shrine at the top (and some penitents on their knees).. But the free walking track is open all week (except Tuesdays) from 5am to 1pm and many sporting types dash up and down. The record ascent is 16 minutes, but most fit people, most of us take 40 minutes at a brisk pace. Allow 3 hours to walk up, down and enjoy the views at the top. Of course you can queue and take the cable car or funicular train up (same price, about US$7 return), or ride up and walk down. Dogs are not allowed on the trail. See the MAP at the end of this post for locations.

Is it safe : yes, the walking track and sanctuary is usually guarded by police cadets at regular intervals. There is a risk of pickpockets in the cable car queue, and if you are on the mountain very late in the day there is a chance of being mugged. The barrio downhill, Las Aguas, and roads down to La Candelaria used to be very unsafe – you were guaranteed to be attacked there in the 1990s – but are now much more secure, but avoid carrying unnecessary valuables especially in late or early hours.

What about altitude: the sanctuary sits well in the sorroche zone, at over 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) s o do not walk up unless you have acclimatised to the high Andes, which takes 4 days being in Bogotá. See my post Do you have an altitude problem? Even then you might get breathless so take plenty of rests and drink water. Coca Cola makes a good energy booster with sugar and caffeine. Coca tea is useless. There are toilets on the trail up (basic) and at the top.

What to take : Walking up to Bogota´s Monserrate: some cash for snacks/water/toilet. Camera or phone. Rain jacket. Sun hat. Strong shoes or trainers. Food: there are traditional Colombian high-cholesterol cafés at a small ‘street market’ at the top of the mountain, some with good views. There are also some ‘fine dining’ restaurants at the top too, with top prices. There are also stalls and a small settlement with cafés half way up the walking track.

When to go: the walking trail is busy ever day, with sporting people going up early every day at 5am and tourists usually later around 9am. If you go early on a clear day you might get views over to the snow-capped volcanoes del Ruiz and Tolima, far to the west on Cordillera Central. Saturdays are busier, and Sundays is very crowded.

How to get there: Walking up to Bogota´s Monserrate: Montserrate, The Casa Museo Quinta del Bolívar and the Quebrada San Francisco (see below) walk are all close to each other and can be visited together (note: the Quebrada San Francisco walk is only open during weekends). Most people take a taxi to the Monserrate base station, or you can get a Transmilenio bus to the Universidades terminal close to the University of Los Andes. From there it is a 10-minute walk up through Barrio Las Aguas to the Cabe Car base station.

The Virgen of Guadalupe

Across the mountains from Montserrate is the Virgen of Guadalupe , another shrine named after the Spanish Guadalupe de Badazoz. The 15 metre statue, at 3,300 metres of altitude, looks down on the Monserrate sanctuary. A narrow road leads to a car park at the shrine, and connects to the Bogotá – Choachi road (see MAP below). There are walking paths to the hill but they are not safe. You can get a taxi there, or a local bus on Sunday when many pilgrims visit the site.

The San Francisco – Vicachá walk

This 2-hour hike over waterboard land follows the beautiful San Francisco river which runs past Monserrate. The Sendero San Francisco – Vicachá trail is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5am to 10am. The entrance is 200 metres – 5 minutes walk – east from the Monserrate cable car base station, see my MAP below. The track follows the river past an old mill, then climbs over a steep hilly spur and view´point to end at the Humboldt Institute, from where you can walk along the main Circunvalar road back to Monserrate base.

Casa museo Quinta del Bolívar

South America libertador’s Bogotá home, now a museum and original garden from the 1800s, is five minutes walk west from the Monserrate Cable Car base station. There are guided tours from 10am to 4p, and a small fee to get in (Sundays free).

Things to do in Bogotá: admire the spectacular view from Monserrate

One of the highlights in Bogotá: Monserrate. And not surprisingly, because from this spot high on the mountain you have an impressive view of Colombia’s capital. A highlight to see in Bogotá that is definitely not to be missed. Go up on the scary steep train or get on the cable car to 3152 meters altitude and marvel at how big this city really is. In this article you can read all about Monserrate.

Bogotá: the high-altitude capital of Colombia

When you arrive in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, you immediately notice that this is a big city. Lots of traffic, lots of people, lots of traffic jams, long travel times and lots of buildings. Officially there are 8 million people living in Bogotá, but in reality it is probably about 10 million or even more.

When you walk through the city you will see mostly people and buildings, but you will not have an idea of how big this city really is. Bogotá is located at 2600 meters altitude with an even higher mountain range on the east side. And there you can go up to see for yourself the capital’s impressive size. One of the most popular sights in Bogotá.

Monserrate in Bogotá: a must-see during a city trip

You can’t miss it: everywhere you walk in Bogotá you see the white church on Mount Monserrate. Or well, almost from everywhere. Because although from the top you are amazed at how big Bogotá is, the entire north of the city cannot be seen. That’s how huge Bogotá is….

The large white church on top of the mountain is the Shrine of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate ( Basílica Santuario del Señor Caído de Monserrate ) and stands out above everything else.

The first version of the shrine was built in the year 1657 , but it was so badly damaged during the severe earthquake in 1917 that a new church had to be built. In 1920, the new church was inaugurated, and this is the church you see towering over Bogotá to this day.

To this day, many religious people visit the church every day, and probably even more tourists.

Things to do in Bogotá: Monserrate cable car

1. By cable car ( teleférico ).

The cable car from downtown Bogotá to the top of Monserrate was built in 1953, and inaugurated in September 1955. There are two cabins that can hold up to 40 people. The cabins consist of large windows, from which you have a great view of the city.

2. The funicular train ( funicular ).

Another option is the funicular, cable car train, built between 1926 and 1929 by the Swiss company Lowis von Roll, and officially inaugurated on Aug. 18, 1929. In 2003, the little train was renovated to a more modern version.

The funicular has a straight length of 800 meters and an average slope of 80 degrees, with a speed of 3.2 meters per second and a maximum capacity of 80 people.

The cable car train also goes up steeply through the forest up the mountain. Although it’s a bit scary, also here you have a great view of Bogotá. A fun experience!

Opening hours train to Monserrate

You can take the train up Monserrate on Monday through Friday between 5:30AM and 11:45AM. On Saturdays between 5:30AM and 4PM, on Sundays 5:30AM and 6PM. On Sundays, you can buy a ticket until 5PM. And on holidays you can take the funicular up the mountain between 5:30AM and 6PM, you can buy your ticket until 5PM.

How much does the train cost?

3. Walking up Mount Monserrate in Bogotá

You can climb Monserrate Mountain via a path that is 2.5 kilometers long. The trail has two viewpoints and goes up quite steeply. This is where the hike begins.

Walking up is free. There are police on the route, so it is advisable to take only the official route to Monserrate and not deviate from it. It is not safe.

Just arrived in Bogotá from a low area? Then take the cable car or train to the top. In the center of Bogotá you can already suffer from the altitude, and this worsens as you go higher. Besides, walking up so steeply at over 2,500 meters altitude is very tough if you are not used to the altitude.

Restaurants on Mount Monserrate

At Monserrate, there are 7 restaurants. There is a culinary route as you come to the top, passing all the restaurants. Restaurants vary in price and luxury, but are generally not cheap. From some restaurants (such as San Isidro and Santa Clara) you have a great view of the city as you sit down to eat. Also spectacular in the evening!

Here you will find a list of restaurants, the menus, prices and the culinary route on the map.

Santa Clara Restaurant

Situated in the beautiful 1924 white house, with a fantastic view of the city. I had dinner here myself once and it was delicious. View menu, prices and opening hours here.

Restaurant San Isidro

The beautiful colonial house in the middle of the path to Monserrate, with a French kitchen. It is a more upscale restaurant, which requires formal clothing in the evening. View menu, prices and opening hours here.

Then there are the restaurants:

  • Mercado Monserrate
  • Café Bistró (to have a drink, this is where I once had delicious canelazo)
  • Postres Picaditos (for desserts and cakes)
  • La Tienda Monserrate (for typical Colombian appetizers, such as empanadas)
  • El Kiosco (cheap food and drink, more fast food)

The pilgrim path to the church

After the scenic ride on the little train or cable car, you will arrive at an oasis of peace and nature. Along a beautiful path you walk even further up toward the church Monserrate. Meanwhile, you walk the Way of the Cross where through various images the suffering of Christ is depicted. A beautiful sight so in the middle of the Andes Mountains.

Nature versus the big city

Even though you are still in Bogotá, you are in the middle of the high Andes mountains. This becomes more apparent when you arrive at Monserrate, where you have the beautiful green mountains on one side and an immense city on the other. An extraordinary sight I can say. Instead of exhaust fumes, you can smell nature here, and if you’re lucky you’ll see one of the many species of birds that fly around (including hummingbirds ). Enjoy hiking high in the mountains, yet in the middle of a metropolis!

Hiking to Moserrate

Monserrate: an impressive view of Bogotá

Once you have arrived at the viewpoint after the beautiful hike, I can assure you that you will be impressed. So beautiful! Spectacular. Bogotá suddenly turns out to be an insanely big city, you see the slums in the mountains and even the airport far away (if the weather is nice).

And the great thing is that you only see part of the city , so in reality Bogotá is even bigger. For example, for many years I lived in the north of the city, from where you can’t see Monserrate. So you can only see about two-thirds. Incredible…

Practical tips for visiting Monserrate in Bogotá

How to get to monserrate from downtown bogotá.

Monserrate’s visitor center can be found here.

Are you staying in La Candelaria? Then you can walk to the visitor center. This is safe for the most part, there is only one stretch at the top just before Monserrate where you have to be more careful. Do not use a phone on the street and leave valuables in your hotel (or at home). Keep these safety recommendations for Bogotá in mind.

Of course, you can also take a cab to Monserrate. Always order these through an app, and never stop taxis on the street. If you are going from Monserrate back to your hotel or another destination in Bogotá by taxi, order it as well. Here’s how to do it.

Plan your visit to Monserrate

As you read above, both the cable car and cable train do not run all day on weekdays. Therefore, it is fun to go up by train in the morning and back by cable car in the afternoon. That way you’ve had both. Note : In this case, buy a return ticket directly at the visitor center.

Want to go up by cable car or train and walk back? Then buy only a single ticket.

When can you expect big crowds?

There are certain times when it is extremely crowded at Monserrate. Consider weekends, Friday afternoons, vacation periods and holidays . In December, Monserrate is completely illuminated, which is a special experience. Or at least: it should be when you get to the top. Expect very long queues if you want to go up in the evening or afternoon during the Christmas season. I haven’t succeeded yet…

Weather conditions

Before you decide to go to Monserrate: take a look outside. If it is raining or the mountain is in the clouds (happens frequently), I would wait a while since you can’t see much in that case.

The weather in Bogotá can change quite quickly, and especially if you plan to stay a few hours, it is advisable to bring an umbrella and something warm. After all, you’re at high altitude and it’s always colder there.

How to Spend a Day at Cerro de Monserrate

How to Spend a Day at Cerro de Monserrate

A quick 15-minute drive to the edge of Bogotá, one can discover the beauty of Cerro de Monserrate and the viewpoint that allows you to watch the world of Colombians from the sky.

Dominating the city from above, you can discover the history of this sacred place that has been watching over Bogotá for thousands of years, while also enjoying restaurants, hiking, birdwatching, a cable car, and a train on the mountainside.

Located outside of one of the busiest downtowns in Latin America, Cerro de Monserrate offers a look into authentic travel. Today while still a religious pilgrimage, this tourist attraction will allow you to understand the locals a bit more from up above. Continue reading to learn how to take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the nature whether it be with a hike or a nice dinner watching the day end with your travel partners.

How To Get There

Cerro de Monserrate Colombia

First, to get there you need to get a taxi or walk to the base. Here you can begin your trek up to the top or purchase a ticket for an enjoyable and comfortable ride up. Depending on the day and time you visit, there may be a long or short wait for both modes of transportation. But you will never wait too long.

Contingent on the mode of transportation you take, your arrival time will vary. If you are an avid hiker, you will want to take advantage of the close nature to the city. If not, you can choose between two astonishing modes of transportation, the funicular or teleférico (cable car).

What Can You Do at Cerro de Monserrate?

If you are an adventurous traveler, you will want to hike to the top of Cerro de Monserrate. With about 1700 steps along a steep 1.5-mile (2.414 km) hike, this hike is well trafficked as it is surrounded by lush scenery right outside of the bustling city of Bogotá. If you do not want to hike with thousands of others to the top for church services, do not plan for a Sunday morning hike.

If you are unsure about your ability to hike at 8,661 feet (2,640 meters), do not be discouraged, you can take the cable car or the funicular up.

Enjoy The Views from The Teleférico or The Funicular

Cerro Monserrate Funicular

The fastest way up, the teleférico is your somewhat average cable car. Unique to the teleférico is the way it carries you along the side of a mountain as you speed past the lush scenery of the walking path. Whereas rather than being suspended from a cable, the funicular is a cable railroad system alongside the steep slope of the mountain.

With slight differences between the funicular and the teleférico, the choice is yours! You can take one up and the other one down! Or just take one both ways! However, if you visit during a national holiday such as: Christmas, New Year’s, Semana Santa, Good Friday, or Corpus Christi, only the funicular will be running.

 Market Shopping

What would a tourist location be without market vendors? Although the market on top is smaller than others, the stores have all the essential souvenirs one would want to buy during their time in Bogotá. If shopping is not one of your interests, you will also find restaurants, birdwatching, or the sanctuary.

 Sanctuario de Monserrate

Cerro Monserrate Colombia

After your hike along the cobblestone path or ride up to the top you will find the magnificent Sanctuario de Monserrate that houses Basilica Sanctuario del Señor de Monserrate. This Catholic Church is unlike any other iglesia (church) as it watches and protects over the city from the sky and a large part of the experience is the pilgrimage up.

Do not be surprised when you see as many locals as tourists up here, as it is a sacred place to pray for many after their pilgrimage along the cobblestone path. If you choose to join the pilgrimage on Sundays you may see locals walking on their knees, blind folded, or barefoot in sacrifice for healing.

 Birdwatching

Who would have thought sitting on the side of a large capital with millions of residents you would be able to find somewhere to watch birds in peace? As shocking as it sounds, Cerro de Monserrate is the up-and-coming location for hummingbirds and over 200 other types of birds sitting around Bogotá.

Where To Eat

 restaurante santa clara.

Directly on the top, Restaurante Santa Clara is the perfect place to go to grab a bite to eat while watching the sunset over one of Latin America’s busiest cities. Come for the views and stay for the delicious local Colombian dishes such as: Bandeja Paisa, Ajiaco Santafereño, or arroz attolado. If you do not have time for a meal in the evening, they offer “onces santafereñas” or teatime at their Café Santa Clara.

 Restaurante Casa San Isidro

For over the past 40 years, Restaurante Casa San Isidro has been awarded as one of the top French restaurants in Bogotá. While the menu varies, the focal point of the restaurant is to center your experience around the current season. Let your tastebuds come alive while you watch the world from above.

 Monserrate Grill Restaurant

Monserrate Grill Restaurant offers a different view than the city below, as it looks out over one of the nature reserves that lines the capital of Colombia. With a more casual vibe than the other two restaurants, here you will find exquisite grilled meats paired with typical Colombian cuisine.

The Best Time to Visit

Cerro Monserrat Colombia

Due to Latin American wet seasons, December through March are the best months to visit Cerro de Monserrate. While the month you choose makes a difference, the time of day you venture to the mountain is key.

If you are hiking, make sure to arrive at the base early in the morning or afternoon as the trail is only open from 5 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon to start your journey up. However, if you are not a morning person or avid hiker and would like to see the breathtaking views, sunset is the best time to visit.

............let me understand you, you intend to walk from your hotel to the ticket office and then (A) purchase a ticket for the Funicular or cable car to the top of Monserrate or (B) you want to walk the trail up to the top?

I have done both many times, again my last visit was in July, over the past 34 years of visiting/exploring Bogota and can provide helpful hints.

PS (edit) - In general how many days do you have in Bogota?

We did it from Bolivar Square up to the Gold Museum and the up to the base of the funicular. It was closer to lunch time though.

Not sure if it will be different at 9-10am.

Pleasant walk , I would guess you’ll have to make a final call on the ground dependent on foot traffic and city life at the time ….

I've done that walk many times, and generally like to go across like carrera 4 exploring as I go. 9 to 10 am is a good time to go; don't be flashy and be careful of pick pockets in general and enjoy the walk - it's a lovely area.

For Monserrate in general though, I like to go as early as possible to avoid crowds.

At night time, Candalaria is sketchy so be careful.

That walk is perfectly fine. Nothing to worry about. You pass the University of the Andes and the lovely Museo Quinta de Bolívar. There will be lots of people doing the exact same walk.
