Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link Passenger Information

Why Do You Need a Rabbit Card in Bangkok?

How to buy a rabbit card, what are rabbit cards.

Rabbit cards are Bangkok’s answer to the contactless, stored value cards that are used on public transport in other large cities. For example, Hong Kong has an Octopus card, Singapore has an EZ Link card and London has an Oyster card.

Bangkok’s Rabbit card works in a similar manner. Passengers no longer have to buy individual tickets or tokens for journey on the BTS Skytrain. Instead they just tap their card on a turnstile gate card reader to enter and exit a station.

In addition to being super useful if you plan on taking public transport around the city centre, Rabbit cards can also be used at a large selection of shops and restaurants. These include chains such as: McDonalds, Dairy Queen, The Pizza Company, Burger King, The Coffee Club, Bread Talk, Swensens, Sizzler & Family Mart.

Instead of paying with cash or your credit card, just use your Rabbit card. However, the maximum amount a card can be topped up is 4,000 Baht. So it’s more suited for buying lunch in a food court, a Swensen’s ice cream or a coffee in Starbucks than a full on shopping spree.

For example. if you are spending a couple of days shopping in Bangkok you can use your Rabbit card to get from central Bangkok to Chatuchak weekend market and then back to the city. Or head across the river to the new Siam Icon mall (the largest in Bangkok) before heading back to your hotel or taking the skytrain down to Thonglor for dinner.

You can even use it on the Chaopraya Tourist boat which is a great way to spend a day checking out the sights and riverfront attractions in central Bangkok.

Rabbit cards can also be used on the river boats in bangkok

Rabbit cards can now also be used on the Smart buses in Phuket – these run between the airport and beaches on the island. And on the RTC City Bus service in Chiang Mai. This service runs four routes. Two linking main tourist sites around the city and two between the airport and the city centre.

Rabbit Card Pros

The main benefits of a Rabbit card are:

– Using the card doesn’t cost you any more than buying a regular ticket for the subway or skytrain. In fact it’s 1 Baht per trip cheaper.

– It will save you a lot of time. No need to queue for change for a ticket machine or at a ticket machine.

– You can use it to buy food, drinks and snacks in shopping malls. No need to carry a lot of bank notes or coins.

Rabbit Card Cons

As far as downsides go:

– The card can’t be used on the MRT subway or Airport Link trains in Bangkok.

That’s the only significant downside. It would be great if the Airport Link, MRT and BTS could come to an agreement and allow passengers to use the same card for their networks, but that hasn’t happened yet.

There’s also the fact there’s an initial issuing fee of 100 Baht. However, this is a small price to pay for the convenience and time it will save you. And the card will pay for itself if you use some of the promotions on offer.

Deals and Discounts

Restaurants and some attractions often offer discounts and promotions for card holders. Check the current promotions and you’ll see it’s easy to save 10 – 15% on burgers, coffee or donuts for example. Users can also sing up for ‘Rabbit Rewards’ simply by installing the app ( Iphone ) ( Android ) and linking it to their card.

And holders get 150 Baht discount on their entry ticket at Sea Life aquarium at Siam Paragon mall in central Bangkok. This is the largest indoor aquarium in Southeast Asia. So well worth visiting if you want a break from shopping. It’s located in the basement, under the excellent food court – where your Rabbit card can also be used.

Buy your Rabbit card at any BTS station when you are in Bangkok. Or if you prefer to plan in advance and make the most of your time in Bangkok, it’s actually cheaper to buy online and pick it up when land at Suvarnabhumi.

You can tell the visitors who are well prepared for their visit to Bangkok. They’ll ignore the queues in the airport Arrivals Hall at SIM card booths and currency exchanges. and will avoid the taxi ranks. They’ll immediately head down to the Basement Level at Suvarnbhumi Airport.

Because that’s where you’ll find the currency exchanges with the best – no rip off – rates. Plus the Klook.com booth, where savvy travellers will pick up their 4G SIM card, discounted Airport train ticket and Rabbit card.

Travel is stressful enough, get the essentials in advance and chill.

Public Transportation Discount Cards in Bangkok, Thailand

Public transportation in Bangkok, Thailand is safe, reliable and cheap. Most tourists visiting Bangkok use the sky train, underground train or boats to see the city, but end up paying full fares as they don’t understand the city’s discount travel cards and passes. With savings up to 30% of regular fares on trains and boats in Bangkok, why pay full price if you don’t have to. Look at these Bangkok discount travel passes and cards. You’ll be happy you did.

Bangkok’s BTS Sky Train – One of the best forms of public transportation in Bangkok, the sky train system goes to most major areas of the city for a relatively inexpensive price. Known as the BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit), the sky train has two discount travel cards, perfect for tourists and with savings from 10-30% on each fare, depending where in Bangkok you travel and which discount travel card you buy.

Cards can be bought at the kiosk at any BTS sky train station.

BTS One-Day Pass – If you’ll be traveling to various places in Bangkok on just one day, then your best bet is to buy a BTS One-Day Pass. Each card costs 120 baht (approximately $4), but with that card you can travel on the BTS all day from the first train at 6am to the last train at midnight – unlimited times, unlimited trains, unlimited destinations.

Considering an average BTS train ride is 35 baht ($1.20), then all you have to do is take four train trips during a one day period and you’ve already saved money. Should you be getting on and off the sky train numerous times during one day, this card is easily your best bet.

Adult SmartPass – If you’ll be in Bangkok for a few days and likely to be using the sky train a lot, purchase an Adult SmartPass at a BTS kiosk.

An Adult SmartPass can be purchased for a specific number of trips – 15, 25, 35 and 45 trips – with a varying price depending on the number of trips you purchase. This card lasts for five years though so, if you’ll be in and out of Bangkok several times you can buy one for 45 trips, as you’ll always be able to use it.

Depending on the number of trips you purchase, each journey is a certain percentage cheaper than a regular ticket. For instance, if you buy a 15-trip pass, the cost of each trip is 23 baht (81 cents). If you pay for a 45-trip pass, the cost of each trip falls to 20 baht (75 cents) – no matter where you travel on the BTS in Bangkok.

MRT Underground Train Travel Pass – Tourists will also love using Bangkok’s underground train system or MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), as it covers much of the city the BTS doesn’t. The MRT also offers a discount travel card perfect for tourists wanting to save a bit of money.

MRT Period Pass – For tourists, the best card is an MRT Period Pass. These can be purchased for specific periods – 1-Day, 3-Day, 15-Day or 30-Day periods. Once you have the card, like the BTS, the MRT allows you unlimited trips on any train during the time of the Period Pass. Depending on which card you purchase and which stations you travel to, you save 10-50% or more.

Child/Elder Pass – The MRT also issues Child and Elder Period Pass cards, with special prices for children under 14 and for adults over age 65.

The Tourist Boat One-Day Pass – If you take any of the ferry boats going up and down or across the Chao Praya, they’re so cheap there’s no real reason for them to ever issue a tourist discount pass. With trips as cheap as 10 baht (30 cents) to travel more than 10 miles upriver or down river, you’ll barely miss the money.

But, there is a special discount pass for tourists on a Tourist Boat that ferries up and down the Chao Praya River all day and it’s a very good deal.

The Chao Praya Tourist Boat pass costs 120 baht ($3.75) and allows you to get on and off the tourist boat all day for the same price. Boats start at the Saphan Thaksin boat pier and go all the way up the Chao Praya stopping at 10 piers on the way there and back. The first boat leaves at 9:30 am and, from then on, they run every 30 minutes until 4pm. Your 120 baht price also gets you a free bottle of water, a map and a boat timetable, and a tour guide who will tell you all about the various sights as your boat goes up and down the river.

The Chao Praya Tourist boat is a wonderful way to see the traditional river life of Bangkok and, as you can get on and off to your heart’s content, you can cover a lot of ground too.

The Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) – A Tourist’s Guide

The Bangkok Mass Transit System, commonly known as the Skytrain or BTS, is the most efficient means of transportation in in Bangkok.

Since 1999 the BTS has been helping Bangkokians and tourists alike hop easily from one station to another

Aside from convenience and speed, fares are cheap compared to other transport modes, and of course fixed, so you won’t have to worry about being overcharged by a tuk tuk!

The Bangkok Skytrain runs on two lines comprising 44 stations.

The Sukhumvit line (light green) runs from Wat Phra Sri Mahathat to Kheha, while the Silom line (dark green) runs from the National Stadium to Bang Wa. These lines intersect at the central Siam BTS Station.

Service Hours

The Bangkok Skytrain operates daily from 6 AM to midnight.

Like every other city, the busiest times are the early morning and early evening, as commuters to and fro from work.

It is best to travel after 10 AM and before 4.30 PM, and then after 7.30 PM.

Key Destinations

The best thing about the Bangkok Skytrain from a tourist's perspective is that is that it enables you to visit different destinations much faster than taking a taxi.

Here's a list of noteworthy stations that will take you to some great places.

And if you want to see a big map, go here .

Asok station intersects with the underground line, the Mass Rapid Transit system (MRT).

This is the gateway to Sukhumvit and, as well as access to the Terminal 21 Mall, you can easily walk from here along to Soi Nana and the Thong Lor and Ekkamai areas.

For those wanting to visit Soi Cowboy, this is also the stop you need.

2. Mo Chit BTS

This station is your gateway to the biggest market in the city, the Chatuchak Weekend Market.

The market boasts over 15,000 shops, run by more than 11,000 stall owners.

The market draws huge crowds on Saturday and Sunday, but note that it's also open on Friday evening from 6 PM.

3. Victory Monument Station

Referred to locally as Anusawari Chai Samoraphum, Victory Monument sites in a highly urbanized neighbourhood with a great street market, fairly priced eateries and plenty of shops.

It is home to the famous Victory Monument landmark, erected in June 1941 to commemorate the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai War .

Victory Monument also boasts Santiphap Park (Park of Peace). This gem of a park is beautifully kept and deserving of a chill-out by the lake.

My advice is to head to the park around 5pm, hang out there until the sun starts to go down, then go for dinner at a local restaurant, and then browse the market. You can even walk into Sukhumvit from Victory Monument afterwards to grab a few drinks.

4. Siam Station

Because Bangkok Skytrain’s Sukhumvit and Silom lines first intersect at this station, Siam BTS Station is regarded as the central BTS station.

This is a big shopping district. Here you'll find the famous Siam Paragon, Siam Square, Paragon Cineplex and lots more shops!

5. Ari Station

Not far from Mo Chit BTS Station is Ari, a popular expat area next to the famed La Villa – a luxury-inspired mall that features designer shops and alfresco restaurants.

La Villa, which is open from 10 AM to 10 PM. La Villa is a conceptual mall, combining green space with modern architecture.

It houses an upscale supermarket, banks, service centres and a number of trendy cafés and restaurants to serve neighbouring residents and office workers.

6. Saphan Taksin Station

Saphan Taksin is the station your need for the Bangkok National Museum, and also a way to get to the Grand Palace , holy Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha – simply known as Wat Pho.

For the latter, you can alight at Saphan Taksin for the Tha Maharaj Pier.

You can then take the Chao Phraya Express boat down the river of the same name and visit these historic places.

Taking the boat is a great way to see how people live next to the shallows of this famous river.

TIP: Be careful of water drops splashing up into your mouth and eyes. You don't want dysentery.

7. Sala Daeng Station

Sala Daeng station is the closest to the Patpong entertainment district. There's also a popular night market here.

It's not somewhere you'll want to take the kids, though, certainly not after 7 or 8pm.

Patpong is a red light district and famed for kick-starting the go-go culture in Thailand's tourist districts.

The red light area is made up of two parallel streets with the night market in the middle.

There are over 20 go-go bars, as well as the infamous sex and ping-pong shows.

I don't advise going to these shows, as certain shows are famed for scamming tourists with big bar bills.

BTS-skytrain-bangkok-night

Cost & Purchase

The minimum price on the BTS Skytrain is 16 Baht for a single journey.

The price obviously increases in relation to the length of your journey, and goes up to 59 Baht for the longest journey.

There are no return journey tickets; you simply buy one on the way back, or buy for a return journey at the same time.

You can pay at a machine or use the cashier desks. A few stations have ticket machines that accept bank notes, but most only accept 1, 5 and 10 Baht coins.

If you're unsure, just queue for the cashier; they are always very helpful.

The amount you'll need to pay is detailed at the machine and on signs; it's all really straightforward.

Other Ticket Options

If you plan to roam around Bangkok and visit multiple destinations, then get a day pass – priced at 140 Baht.

If you plan to stay in Bangkok for a while, the BTS Skytrain Rabbit Card will be your best bet.

It is a reloadable card that you can tap on the turnstiles during entrance and exit.

Rates are calculated according to the station you exit, and the amount is deducted from the card.

Aside from being used to pay for fare, the Rabbit Card can be used as an electronic payment method when purchasing goods in some local shops and selected convenience stores.

The Rabbit Card has three types so take note of the type you can avail to get a discount.

  • The student card can be availed by any local or foreign student who is 23 years old and can show proof of identity as a student.
  • The adult card suits local or foreign passengers and is priced at 200 Baht. The amount covers a service fee of 100 Baht, and the rest is stored as a usable amount. As a tourist, you can have the service fee refunded if you return the Rabbit Card before you leave Bangkok.
  • The senior card is exclusive to Thai nationals who are at least 60 years old.

Connecting to Other Destinations

Bangkok mass rapid transit (mrt).

The BTS Skytrain intersects at certain stations where the Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) operates.

Currently, some MRT lines are under construction, while the existing ones operate daily from 6 AM to midnight.

The lines are marked as blue and purple, and passengers can transfer from the MRT to the BTS Skytrain at specific stations, namely:

  • Sukhumvit MRT Station/Asok BTS Station
  • Silom MRT Station/Sala Daeng BTS Station
  • Chatuchak Park MRT Station/Mo Chit BTS Station
  • Phahon Yothin MRT Station/Ha Yaek Lat Phrao BTS Station

Tickets used on the MRT are in the form of tokens for a single trip, while cards similar to the Rabbit Card are used for multiple trips.

Just like the BTS, the minimum fare is priced at 16 Baht and increases based on the distance of the destination.

You cannot use MRT tickets for the BTS, and vice versa, so you'll have to purchase a new ticket every time you transfer.

Airport Rail Link

If you’re looking for a BTS route headed to the Airport Rail Link, use the BTS Sukhumvit Line and alight at Phaya Thai BTS Station.

If you’re departing from the Airport Rail Link, join the MRT by getting off at Makkasan Station, exit 2.

Once you have exited, proceed to the Phetchaburi MRT Station using the skywalk that connects the stations. Transfer takes around 8 minutes.

Bangkok Taxis

Upon exiting any BTS station, you'll find yellow or pink taxis hanging around or driving past.

Taking taxis centrally in peak times can be a traffic nightmare, so avoid them where you can.

Make sure that the driver’s meter is running before you start your journey; some taxis try it on and charge foreigners fixed fares – this mostly happens in the tourist areas.

Boat Rides – Chao Phraya Express Boat

As mentioned previously, you can connect to boats on the river by going to Saphan Taksin station.

This boat line is an affordable means of seeing the views along the Chao Phraya River.

Current prices range from 10 Baht for the local line service within one zone, up to 32 Baht for a green thru yellow flag trip on its entire route from Pakkret to Sathon), depending on the type of boat and the distance travelled

Here's a rundown of the different boat services that fall under the Chao Phraya Express Boat service:

This is a local boat service that only operates on weekdays. It stops at every pier and costs 9-13 Baht.

2. Blue Flag

This service is marketed at tourists. It operates each day of the week and stops at nine piers. Each trip will cost you 40 Baht, but you can save more when purchasing the all-day pass, which is priced at 150 Baht.

3. Yellow Flag

This boat service operates on weekdays and is normally used by local commuters. There are 10 pier stops and the rate per trip is around 20-29 Baht.

4. Orange Flag

This boat is available daily and takes the route between Nonthaburi and Wat Rajsingkorn. Only the main piers are used as stopping points, with each trip priced at 15 Baht.

5. Green Flag

Just like the No Flag service, Green operates on weekdays and is mainly used by locals. As an express boat service, this is an ideal boat to take when travelling to the beautiful island of Ko Kret. Rates per trip normally fall around 13 to 32 Baht.

River Ferries

A total of 32 ferry crossings are available along the Chao Phraya River and in some locations in the provinces of Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan.

With cheap rates as low as 3 Baht, you can cross the river with ease.

These river ferries can be found at Sathorn Central Pier, and are connected to the BTS Skytrain through Saphan Taksin Station.

Long Tail Boats

These boats are found at Sathorn Central Pier and can be hired for private use.

If you are in a group, this is a good option for private sightseeing.

Normally offered by private tour companies, the price of long tail boat hire is usually negotiable and dependent on the number of passengers and distance of the journey.

Canal Boats

Locally known as the Saen Saep Boat Service, these boats are docked in the pier near Ratchathewi BTS Station.

Operating hours on weekdays are between 5:30 AM and 8:30 PM, and until 7 PM on weekends. Ticket rates vary but normally cost 8-20 Baht per trip, depending on the distance.

Shuttle Boats

Shuttle boats are located in the Sathorn Central Pier adjacent to Saphan Taksin BTS station. Some of the better hotels in the area offer free rides to guests.

The BTS Skytrain in Bangkok is the best way to get around town.

It is air conditioned, which is very welcome after stepping off a 32 Celsius sidewalk.

Unlike the Tube system in London, the BTS is clean and people are generally very respectful to each other.

Don't forget the seat etiquette in Thailand. Monks get priority on seats, followed by the elderly, pregnant women and children; so be prepared to give your seat up to any one of these people if they are standing.

The MRT (the underground) is equally good. It's easy to connect to the BTS and intersects at key stations like Siam and Asok.

As a rule of thumb, try to stay within 6 stops of Asok or Siam station. That way it will be quick and easy for you to get into the centre of town.

Getting Around Bangkok: Guide to Public Transportation

Using the BTS, MRT, River Taxis, and Other Transportation Options

With a rush hour that seems to run from morning until evening, getting around Bangkok can test the strongest nerves. Colorful taxis perpetually clog the city’s major thoroughfares.

Fortunately, there are other options! The BTS (Skytrain), MRT (subway), and river taxi networks are extensive. Unless you’re staying near the Khao San Road area where trains don’t yet reach, avoid burning your trip time sitting in gridlocked traffic.

How to Ride the BTS Skytrain

Bangkok’s Skytrain is an excellent choice for moving between busy areas , particularly along Sukhumvit Road where traffic is frequently at a standstill. Looking down at all those brake lights as you speed by above feels good!

The heart of the Skytrain network is Siam Station, a massive interchange connecting the two BTS lines: Sukhumvit (light green on maps) and Silom (dark green on maps).

  • Hours: Trains run every 5-10 minutes from approximately 5:30 a.m. until midnight; schedules vary about 30 minutes, depending on the station. Ticketing offices are open from 6 a.m. to midnight, but big public holidays can affect hours.
  • Fares: Prices for single journeys are calculated by distance and range from 16-59 baht (between 50 cents and $1.90). Ticketing machines clearly display the cost from your current station. The average cost of a one-way trip is usually a dollar or less. A one-day pass for 24 hours of unlimited rides costs 140 baht (around $4.50).
  • Ticketing: The BTS uses ticket cards available from machines (many only accept coins) or the ticketing window (if it’s open). Tickets aren’t checked on trains, but they are required to exit the turnstiles at your destination, so keep it handy! If you lose your ticket or exceed more than two hours on the “inside,” you’ll need to wait for an attendant and pay the maximum fare.
  • Accessibility: Some BTS stations have escalators while others have a lot of stairs to climb. All stations have elevators excluding Saphan Taksin Station, the interchange for the river taxi system.
  • Getting to and From the Airport: Phaya Thai Station on the Sukhumvit Line connects to the Airport Rail Link.

Details about individual station schedules and fares can be found on the official BTS website .

How to Ride the MRT Subway

Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rail Transit feels a bit slower than the Skytrain, but it’s every bit as useful. Over 400,000 daily passengers use the subway for avoiding traffic on the surface. The MRT currently has two lines: the Blue Line (the busiest) and the Purple Line.

The interchange for the Blue Line and Purple Line is Tao Poon Station.

  • Hours: The MRT runs from approximately 6 a.m. until midnight. Trains run every 5-10 minutes, depending on time of day.
  • Fares : Prices are based on distance covered and range from 15-50 baht (between 45 cents and $1.60). An average-length journey will cost around a dollar or less.
  • Ticketing: Ticketing machines for the MRT accept small denominations of Thai baht and vend an RFID token that is tapped for entrance to the platforms. The token must be surrendered to exit.
  • Accessibility: All MRT stations have elevators.
  • BTS Transfers: The MRT crosses the BTS Skytrain at Sala Daeng, Asok, and Mo Chit. You’ll need to get a new ticket.
  • Getting to/from the Airport: Phetchaburi Station is connected to Makkasan Station on the Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) .

Fares and schedules can be seen on the official MRT website .

Using the Trains in Bangkok

Hua Lamphong Station located near Chinatown serves as hub for the long-haul surface trains and MRT. The aging behemoth dates back to 1916 and is set to be converted into a museum in 2021 . The new station located in Bang Sue will become Southeast Asia’s largest train station. Outside of Bangkok, Hua Lamphong Station is more commonly known as Krungthep (Bangkok) Station.

The expected restrictions — no smoking, eating, and drinking — apply for all stations and trains in Bangkok. Some visitors are surprised to learn that photography and video are also prohibited.

On all public transportation options in Bangkok, you should be prepared to give up your seat to any monks and pregnant women when they board.

How to Ride Bangkok’s River Taxi Boats

Unless staying at one of the riverside hotels in Silom, many travelers don’t make use of the riverboat taxis while in Bangkok. The colored-flag system and quick, chaotic loading and unloading at piers (with whistle blowing) can be intimidating at first, but leveraging the mighty Chao Phraya River only makes sense for avoiding traffic. Plus, river taxis are an economical way to cover some distance in Bangkok . Fares for a scenic journey can be as cheap as 30 cents! An all-day pass costs just $3 around 100 baht). Sathorn Pier is the stop nearest to a BTS Skytrain station (Saphan Taksin station on the Silom Line).

How to Ride Buses in Bangkok

Bangkok’s soot-choked buses are the slowest, most complicated option for getting around — tourists rarely bother. Pay the conductor on the bus, and have small change available. Don’t expect much assistance in English.

Other Transit Options

Going by road is the least efficient way to get around in Bangkok. Regardless, sometimes you have to do it, particularly if staying in a neighborhood such as Banglamphu where public transportation options are limited.

Taxis in Bangkok

With a strong taxi “mafia” in place, you’ll need some luck on your side for a good taxi experience in Bangkok. Finding an honest driver is still possible , but patience is required.

All taxis have meters installed. Many drivers balk at using them because they prefer to keep inflated fares off the record. If a driver quotes you a price rather than switches on the meter, try another. Taxis will often queue behind one another for your business.

  • Hail taxis on the move rather than using ones parked in tourist areas.
  • Avoid the freelance drivers. Sharply dressed drivers with well-maintained cars are more likely to work for actual taxi companies than the local taxi mafia.
  • After hailing a taxi, ensure the driver will use the meter.
  • Once in a taxi, follow the route on Google Maps. Doing so can sometimes discourage drivers from taking the long way around because you demanded the meter.
  • Tipping isn’t expected , but you can round up the fare for friendly service.
  • Passengers are responsible for any tolls.

Note: Never get inside any vehicle in Bangkok without first agreeing to a set fare or use of the meter. Once on your way, you are obligated to pay whatever the driver asks.

Ridesharing Services in Bangkok

Ridesharing services cost slightly more than taxis, but you can avoid much of the hassle and upselling. In March 2018, Uber handed operations over to Southeast Asia’s favorite ridesharing app, Grab .

Grab works much in the same way as Uber , however, you can opt to pay with cash. This isn’t a bad idea in case you have a dispute with a rogue driver (unusual, but it happens). The fare can still be haggled or refused and won’t automatically be debited to your credit card.

Understand that rideshare drivers often get targeted and hassled by the local taxi mafia. They may want to pick you up in a place more discreet than the front door. Many drivers don’t put a sign on their car.

Tuk-Tuks in Bangkok

Taking a tuk-tuk ride is considered a quintessential Thailand experience. To enjoy, you’ll need to negotiate a fare and decline potential scams. Definitely don’t agree to stop at shops. Tuk-tuks are fun but no cheaper than taking metered taxis, and with no seat belts, they’re less safe.

If you plan to visit Chiang Mai on your trip , you’ll enjoy plenty of opportunities — tuk-tuks greatly outnumber taxis.

Renting a Vehicle

Although you could, technically, rent a car or motorbike to drive in Bangkok , you’ll regret it. Seriously, don’t do it. Wait for somewhere more relaxing and less dangerous to enjoy a scooter rental . According to the World Health Organization , Thailand has one of the highest traffic-related death rates in the world.

Tips for Getting Around Bangkok

  • Keep your small change. Many ticketing machines for the BTS only accept coins. If you don’t have coins, you’ll have to wait in longer queues for the cashier or at ticketing machines that accept paper currency.
  • Use new tickets for transfers. Unfortunately, a common ticketing system for the BTS Skytrain, MRT underground, and Airport Rail Link is still in the works. You’ll need to surrender the old ticket and buy a new one at interchanges when making transfers.
  • Buy a card for long stays. If you’ll be in Bangkok long enough, consider purchasing rechargeable smart cards for the BTS and MRT. You can avoid the queues at ticketing machines. People over 60 years old get a 50 percent discount when adding credit to the MRT card.
  • Avoid supporting bad practices. Supporting dishonest drivers harms locals through cultural mutation. Local residents sometimes have difficulty hailing taxis because drivers would rather wait for an overpaying tourist who doesn’t demand the meter.

One Card for All: Common ticketing for Bangkok’s public transport system

One Card for All: Common ticketing for Bangkok’s public transport system

In the last few years, there has been an increased focus on expediting the adoption of integrated ticketing for Bangkok’s transit system, with the launch of the Mangmoom Card first being announced in 2015. The aim is to cover the entire public transportation system in the capital, including rail transport, buses, passenger boats, and motorways, as well as non-transportation systems. After initial deployment, the common ticket is expected to replace around a million BTS tickets and 200,000 Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) cards.

Existing fare collection system

At present, each public transport operator in Bangkok has its own ticketing and closed-loop cash management system which accepts smart cards or tokens.

Fares on the BTS Skytrain are calculated according to distance. Passengers can use a stored-value ticket called the Rabbit Card to pay fares on this line as well as the bus rapid transit (BRT) network in Bangkok. The Rabbit Card can also be used to pay for other services and at restaurants that are associated with BTS. It can be recharged at all BTS and BRT ticket offices. However, the card cannot be used on the MRT subway or the Airport Rail Link (ARL) trains. Plans to increase the card’s coverage on more bus routes are being considered.

The ticketing system on the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT Bangkok) uses RFID contactless technology with round tokens issued for single trips and a contactless stored-value card, the MRT Plus card, for frequent travellers.

The ARL uses single-trip tokens and pre-paid smart passes.

Figure 1 depicts the existing fare collection system deployed on the public transport system in Bangkok.

Currently, 16.2 million cards are being used on Bangkok’s rail network, with 14.2 million Rabbit Cards in circulation, 2 million MRT Plus cards in use, and 200,000 Mangmoom cards in use, as depicted in Figure 2.

Upgrading the existing ticketing system

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced plans to overhaul the current payment system on Bangkok’s transport network through the implementation of a common ticketing system in a bid to reduce rail fare by 30 per cent.

In line with this goal, the ministry has partnered with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) to launch a short-term plan to speed up the adoption of interoperability between the Purple Line, operated by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), the Blue Line, operated by the Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM), and the Green Line, operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC).

Box 1 provides details about the Central Clearing House (CCH) Project by MoT and OTP.

Current efforts to implement integrated ticketing

As of 2022, a common ticketing system exists between a few modes, including the BTS Skytrain and the Bangkok BRT which uses the Rabbit Card while the Mangmoom Card can be used on both the MRT Purple and Blue lines.

Further, as a part of the MoT’s short-term plan, an automated fare collection (AFC) system will be rolled out covering the BTS Skytrain and the MRT Blue and Purple lines. Once the system is in place, holders of the Rabbit, MRT Plus, and Mangmoom cards will be able to travel on the train routes without having to purchase separate tickets for each journey. In the future, the ticketing system will be expanded to cover the MRT Red Line, ARL, public buses, and passenger boat services. The AFC system was expected to be deployed at the end of 2021 but was delayed to 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions on transport.

Figure 3 depicts the proposed open-loop fare collection system.

Figure 3: Proposed open-loop fare collection system

When the ticketing system in Bangkok transitions towards an open-loop system, it will substantially lower procurement, ticketing, and transaction costs for transit operators in the city. Additionally, passengers will get more value out of a single card in an open payment system by being able to purchase non-transit products and services.

Expanding the coverage of Mangmoom Card

The Mangmoom Card is planned to be deployed on all rapid transit and bus systems in Bangkok. Once implemented, it will integrate all of the payment systems on the three rail networks and passengers will only require a single card to transfer to other networks. The common card was initially scheduled to be launched in August 2016 but has been plagued with multiple delays. Figure 4 shows the timeline of the deployment of the Mangmoon card in Bangkok.

Figure 4: Planned timeline of deployment of the Mangmoon card in Bangkok

Source: Global Mass Transit Research

As of 2022, there have been no recent updates on expanding the coverage of the Mangmoom card of other transit systems in Bangkok and the agencies involved are still working on developing the integrated system.

Trials of the cEMV payment system

In January 2022, the MRTA launched a pilot test for the EMV open-loop payment system on the Blue and Purple lines. Passengers can just tap their Visa and Mastercard cards to pay the fare.

The MRTA has deployed EMV card readers at 53 stations on the lines. It expects approximately 237,000 riders to avail the service.

In the long run, the account-based ticketing (ABT) system based on EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) technology will cover all modes of public transportation in Bangkok. It will also be used to pay toll fares on the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT)-operated highways, including Si Rat, Udonratthaya, Kanchanaphisek, and Chalermmahanakorn.

One of the main aspects of Bangkok’s public transport system that contributes to passenger inconvenience is its ticketing system. The lack of an integrated ticketing system means that passengers need to carry multiple cards or purchase separate tokens for every transfer in their journey.

Plans to transition to an integrated ticketing system have been long underway in the city, although progress has been slow due to technical and infrastructural difficulties as well as the cost and complexity of the scheme. Till date, fare integration is available on just four transit networks in the city and travellers are continued to be charged for multiple flag-fall.

Further, according to a study conducted by Visa, almost 64 per cent of passengers in Bangkok prefer paying directly with their own bank cards for public transportation while 67 per cent prefer to pay using contactless cards and mobile payments. With the adoption of appropriate measures for integration and interoperability, ABT has the potential to significantly increase public transit ridership in Bangkok. The integrated fare collection system will allow passengers to plan and schedule their journey through a variety of sales and distribution channels, moving away from a station-centric system.

How to Use a Rabbit Card for Bangkok Transit: Essential Tips and Tricks

travel card in bangkok

Navigating Bangkok’s bustling streets can be a daunting task for first-time visitors, but luckily, the city’s extensive public transit system offers an efficient and reliable way to get around. One of the easiest and most convenient ways to use this system is by obtaining a Rabbit Card, which streamlines the process of paying for rides on the BTS Skytrain, as well as other transit options. In this article, we’ll explore how to use a Rabbit Card and ensure a smooth journey through the Thai capital.

A Rabbit Card is essentially a prepaid, refillable smart card that allows you to access various modes of transit in Bangkok. Not only can you use it to pay for rides on the BTS Skytrain, but it also works on select buses and ferries, providing a unified solution for your transportation needs. With a discount based on the distance you travel, it’s not only user-friendly, but also wallet-friendly.

Acquiring a Rabbit Card is simple, as they can be purchased at BTS stations or even on board select buses. Once you have your card, using it is as easy as tapping it at the entrance and exit turnstiles at any BTS station. The cost of your trip is automatically deducted from the card’s balance, so all you need to do is ensure the card remains topped up with sufficient funds. In the following sections, we’ll delve into more details on topping up, as well as additional tips for using your Rabbit Card effectively.

Understanding Rabbit Card

What is rabbit card.

Rabbit Card is a popular contactless payment system used primarily for public transport in Bangkok, Thailand. This handy card is commonly used on the city’s Skytrain (BTS) system, making commuting hassle-free and efficient. The card functions as a prepaid cash card, allowing users to add credits as needed and enjoy seamless transactions without any additional charges.

To use your Rabbit Card, simply tap it on the gate reader at the entrance and listen for the “beep” that signifies successful payment before opening the gate. Similarly, when exiting the station, tap your card again to pay for the cost of your trip, which is automatically deducted from the card’s balance.

Benefits of Rabbit Card

Here are some benefits of using the Rabbit Card in Bangkok’s public transport system:

  • Contactless Payment : Rabbit Card’s tap-and-go feature ensures quick and smooth entry or exit from the stations, making it an efficient and convenient option for daily commuters.
  • Saves Time : Using the Rabbit Card minimizes the need to queue for single-journey tickets, enabling faster boarding and allowing you to reach your destination more quickly.
  • Versatility : Apart from the BTS Skytrain, the Rabbit Card can also be used for certain retail and food & beverage establishments, making it an all-in-one solution for your daily needs.
  • Ease of Use : Topping up the card is simple, as it can be done at any BTS Skytrain station, improving overall convenience for travelers.
  • Affordability : The Rabbit Card helps save money by offering discounts on specific merchants and allowing you to avoid the fluctuating taxi or tuk-tuk fares.

In conclusion, using a Rabbit Card in Bangkok can greatly enhance your experience while commuting around the city. It not only streamlines your daily travel but also brings additional benefits, such as convenience, versatility, and affordability. So, next time you are in Bangkok, make sure to get a Rabbit Card and enjoy the perks it offers!

Purchasing a Rabbit Card

Where to buy.

To get started with using a Rabbit Card for Bangkok transit, you’ll first need to purchase one. Rabbit cards can be conveniently bought at any BTS station in Bangkok. You can also find them at the Smartbus counter in Phuket Airport or the RTC City Bus counter at Chiang Mai Airport.

If you’re at Suvarnabhumi Airport or in the city, head to the Klook counter at the airport or the Klook counter located inside the CentralWorld shopping mall. Don’t worry about bringing cash to the counter, as you can pay for your Rabbit Card using a variety of payment methods, including cash, debit cards, or major credit cards.

Buying Online

If you prefer to buy your Rabbit Card before arriving in Bangkok, you can purchase a card loaded with 200 Baht stored value through Klook.com. During the online checkout process, select the designated pick-up location (either the Klook counter at Suvarnabhumi Airport or the one at CentralWorld shopping mall). After receiving your order confirmation, make sure to bring it with you to your selected pick-up location.

You can also check other online marketplaces like Lazada for Rabbit card purchases, but we recommend purchasing through Klook to ensure a smooth and reliable transaction.

Once you’ve got your Rabbit Card in hand, you’ll be ready to explore the city using Bangkok’s efficient transit system. Happy travels!

Using the Rabbit Card

Riding the bts skytrain.

The Rabbit Card is an essential tool to use the public transit system in Bangkok, such as the BTS Skytrain. To obtain one, visit the Rabbit Service Center at BTS Siam Station in Bangkok or BTS ticket offices during working hours. You will need your Rabbit card, passport, and contact details (phone number/email address).

Passport in traveler's hand

Once you have the card, enter the BTS Skytrain station, and tap it on the turnstile’s card reader. When reaching your destination, tap the card again to exit the station. The fare will be automatically deducted from the card balance.

Airport Rail Link (Suvarnabhumi Airport)

Traveling between Suvarnabhumi Airport and downtown Bangkok becomes more convenient using the Airport Rail Link with your Rabbit Card. Proceed to the designated pick-up location (Klook counter at Suvarnabhumi Airport or Klook counter at centralwOrld shopping mall) and present your order confirmation. After receiving your Rabbit Card along with cash-vouchers, you’re set to explore the city. Swipe the card and board the train.

City Line Airport Rail Link

The City Line Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with eight stations throughout Bangkok . You can use your Rabbit Card to access these trains. Upon entering, the fare will be deducted automatically, making your travel experience quickly and efficiently.

The Rabbit Card is also accepted on the MRT Subway system in Bangkok. Similar to the BTS Skytrain, use your Rabbit Card to enter and exit the subway stations.

Buses and Smart Bus

The Rabbit Card can be used on public buses and Smart buses in Thailand, making it convenient for tourists who want to visit different provinces. For instance, you can use your card on Smart buses running between the Phuket airport and the island’s beaches. Additionally, the Rabbit Card can be used on the RTC City Bus service in Chiang Mai, covering four routes.

Topping Up and Credit Management

How to top up.

Topping up your Rabbit Card is a breeze. It can be done at any major retailer, such as MaxValue Supermarket, Starbucks, or McDonald’s, that accepts Rabbit Card as a payment option. Just look for the ‘Top-Up signs’ to locate the top-up point. Additionally, you can top up your Rabbit Card at BTS ticket windows using cash.

Refunds and Deposit

When purchasing a Rabbit Card, you may initially be required to pay a deposit of 300 THB. In some cases, the deposit may be refundable upon returning the Rabbit Card, subject to the card’s current condition.

Make sure to keep track of your card’s balance, as Rabbit Cards can carry a maximum amount of THB 4,000 at any given time. To check your balance, simply tap your card on the gate reader at any BTS station.

Credit Card Payments

While it’s handy to have cash when topping up your Rabbit Card, some places may allow you to use credit cards for top-up transactions.

However, it is always recommended to have cash on hand for a hassle-free experience, especially when using BTS ticket windows to top up.

Discounts and promotions, participating shops and restaurants.

Rabbit Card holders can enjoy discounts and promotions at various participating shops and restaurants throughout Bangkok. For instance, you may save 10-15% on food and beverages at certain establishments, such as for burgers, coffee, or donuts.

Special Privileges

In addition to discounts at shops and restaurants, Rabbit Card users can also sign up for ‘Rabbit Rewards’ by installing the app (available for both iPhone and Android) and linking it to their card. This system provides even more promotions and privileges for cardholders, making it more enticing to use the Rabbit Card for everyday transactions around the city.

Transportation Pass Comparison

The Rabbit Card is primarily used as a top-up card for accessing the BTS transport system in Bangkok. However, it can also be used to pay for the BRT bus service and at other supported merchants throughout Thailand via Rabbit Card terminals. This added versatility makes the Rabbit Card a convenient option for anyone navigating Bangkok’s public transportation and seeking additional discounts and promotions.

Be sure to exchange your money when you arrive at the airport, as USD isn’t accepted anywhere. Thankfully, ATMs are common, so you’ll have no trouble pulling out the dough for your next delicious meal.

No single product will be the best option for your vacation, so using several methods will give you greater accessibility and security.

For example, a credit card gives you peace of mind of not being stuck without money in case of an emergency. Plus, you could get additional perks like complimentary travel insurance and rewards.

A travel card can be valuable if it allows you to load Thai baht, but you’ll pay ATM withdrawal fees charged on both ends.

A debit card like the Charles Schwab will let you withdraw money for less.

Spread your travel budget across a couple of cards, so you have multiple ways to access your money. Be savvy with your budget and apply for a product that saves you at least the currency conversion and international ATM fee.

Visa and Mastercard branded travel, debit and credit cards can be used for over-the-counter purchases and ATM withdrawals in Thailand. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and some hostels, food at medium to large restaurants and when shopping at department stores and retailers. It’s harder to find retailers that accept American Express, so plan on bringing a variety of cards just in case.

For your trips outside the big cities, you’ll need to take cash for all of your expenses, including lodging, restaurants and markets.

You’ll find ATMs accept most major international bank cards throughout most of Thailand. Even if you have a card that doesn’t charge foreign withdrawal fees, you’ll find that Thai ATMs charge $4 to $5.

stack of credit cards

Using a credit card

Nothing gives you the most purchasing power on expensive items like hotels and flights like credit cards when traveling in Thailand. Find yourself a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, like the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees ).

Carrying a credit card gives you the added benefit of travel insurance and other perks, depending on your provider. If you’re hunting for a new card, compare your travel card options to choose one that offers the best value for your travel needs.

  • Tip: Some credit cards offer complimentary international travel insurance when you charge the cost of your return travel ticket to your card.
  • Rewards program and travel insurance
  • Waived international ATM and conversion fees
  • Interest-free days on purchases
  • Overseas ATM fees and currency conversion fees
  • Cash advances accrue interest from the moment of withdrawal
  • American Express and Diner Club are not accepted in many places

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in Thailand. American Express cards are accepted in large supermarkets, at expensive restaurants and hotels and at gas stations. Discover cards have moderate card acceptance in Thailand, mostly in high-end establishments. Look for the Diners Club logo for Discover card acceptance.

If you’re looking to make cash withdrawals, look for Citibank or Bangkok Bank ATMs for your Discover card. Bangkok Bank ATMs also accept Amex cards, but so do many smaller banks’ ATMs.

There are two kinds of fees you could incur while using your credit card in Thailand:

  • Foreign transaction fees. You could pay up to 3% for every transaction you make. That’s $120 fee per $4,000 spent in Thailand.
  • Currency conversion fees. If you pay a merchant or make a withdrawal from an ATM in US dollars instead of local currency, you’ll incur a Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). DCC comes with poor exchange rates and additional fees potentially.

Explore top debit cards with no foreign transaction fees and travel credit cards by using the tabs to narrow down your options. Select Compare for up to four products to see their benefits side by side.

  • Credit cards

Debit card being swiped in a POS station

Using a debit card

Most debit cards will charge a currency conversion fee or international ATM fee when you use the card to make a purchase or withdrawal in Thai baht. A few however, like the debit card from Betterment Checking , waive these fees and allow you to use any ATM for no charge.

In addition to a currency conversion fee, most ATMs in Thailand charge between $4 to $5 fees. Your best bet is to withdraw the maximum amount — 20,000 baht to avoid incurring too many fees.

  • Tip: Many ATMs offer to automatically convert the charges to your home currency, also called dynamic currency conversion. This exchange rate will be lower, so always refuse this offer.
  • Can be used at all ATM and merchants in Thailand
  • Charge less or $0 fee for ATM withdrawals
  • No currency conversion fee
  • ATM operator fees
  • No access to cash advance

person at laptop with credit card and phone

Using a prepaid travel card

Travel cards are useful if the card you choose allows you to convert US dollars into Thai baht. And consider the currencies of neighboring countries if you’re traveling to other Southeast Asian countries on your vacation. If you pick a travel card that can’t hold baht, you’ll pay a currency conversion fee when you make a purchase or withdrawal in Thailand.

In this case, a travel money card will cost you more to use than the cards you already have in your wallet. Some travel cards don’t charge for currency conversion; however, these cards will certainly charge you to make an ATM withdrawal. There are issue, reload and inactivity fees to consider as well as ATM and currency conversion fees.

  • Locked-in exchange rates
  • A safe way to carry money — protected by pin and signature and can easily be canceled
  • Comes with lots of fees for loading and reloading, inactivity and ATM withdrawals
  • Exchange rates are lower than credit cards and debit cards
  • Not all travel cards support baht

Hand giving cash to other hand

Paying with cash in Thailand

Make an ATM withdrawal when you arrive or exchange USD at an exchange office or bank to get Thai baht. You won’t pay a commission to get cash changed, but avoid exchanging cash at hotels, hostels and guesthouses as you’ll get a bad rate. There at no fees or commissions to exchange your money at the airport, though you may not get the best rate.

Look for exchange shops like Super Rich and Value Plus, which offer the best rates in Thailand. To avoid losing money to fraud or error, be sure to count your money before you leave the exchange counter.

Using traveler’s checks

Unlike other countries, American Express traveler’s checks can be easily cashed in Thailand at exchange offices and banks. However, debit cards and travel cards have largely replaced them. Although you can get a better rate transferring funds using traveler’s checks, you’ll pay a 153 THB fee to cash each check. So it’s best to get your checks in larger denominations so you’ll have fewer checks to cash.

  • Tip: Some enjoy the security that traveler’s checks offer. You must have your passport each time you cash your checks — protecting you if they are lost or stolen.

Getting a refund if you’re the victim of a fraudulent transaction

  • A commission fee applies

The baht is divided into 100 satang and is issued by the bank of Thailand and is the 10th most traded currency in the world. All currency — paper and coin — depicts the portrait of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej or a deceased relative.

There are strict laws in place that prohibit verbal, physical or written material that insults or disrespects the royal family. This means treating the money with respect by not stepping on it, throwing it, tearing or defacing it in any way.

The main banks in Thailand are:

  • Bangkok Bank
  • Bank of Ayudhya
  • Kasikorn Bank
  • Kiatnakin Bank
  • Krung Thai Bank
  • Siam Commercial Bank (SCB)
  • Standard Chartered Thailand
  • Thanachart Bank

It’s best to wait till you arrive in Thailand before buying Thai baht. The best way to get baht is to make an ATM withdrawal using an account that doesn’t charge an international ATM or currency conversion fee.

Do this at the airport as soon as you arrive and throughout your trip when you need more cash. You’ll pay a couple of dollars each time you withdraw baht from a Thai ATM, but this will be cheaper than paying the exchange office commission and Visa and Mastercard gives you one of the best rates on the market.

If you do want to purchase baht in the US, you can buy foreign cash at these financial and foreign exchange institutions:

Thai ATMs charge a 180THB fee when you make an ATM withdrawal using your credit, debit or travel card. Aeon ATMs charge 150THB per for each withdrawal. Using a travel friendly debit card like the one from Betterment Checking can save you on further fees, like international ATM fees.

  • Tip: Currently, there are no ATM machines on the island of Ko Lipe near the Malacca Strait, so make sure you’re carrying more than enough cash when you travel there.

Thailand is rated one of the least dangerous country in Southeast Asia for travelers. Generally, petty theft like pickpocketing or bag-snatching is more than common in busy tourist areas. To keep your travel money safe, try keeping your wallet in your pocket, or use a money belt to hide your funds and keep it out of arm’s reach.

The average Thai lives on a less than 7,750 THB per month in Bangkok — less than $300 a month. Although prices in Thailand are increasing steadily each year as a result of tourism, it’s still a budget destination for American travelers.

By t aking local buses, eating street food, and drinking local beer, you can live on $25 a day — including a bed in a hostel. Staying at in a hotel and eating in restaurants you can spend as little as $70 a day. For a more luxurious stay you can spend as little at $200 a day.

Case study: Interview with Justin about travel money in Thailand

Justin visited Thailand with his friends, spending a full three weeks exploring the Bangkok and the southern region. They flew into Bangkok and spent some time temple-spotting and exploring Koh Sahn Road before jumping on another plane and heading south to Phuket. We interviewed him about his travel money experience.

What money tips do you have to anyone travelling to Thailand?

He says to be realistic about your travel budget. Be sure to have access to plenty of cash, because you’ll need it for shopping at the markets and anytime you leave the large cities. Another pro tip: Monday is cleaning day in Bangkok, so many of the street food vendors take the day off — so plan on other eating options that day.

MRT Bangkok Map, Fare, Tickets & Tips for Metro Bangkok

MRT Bangkok  (Metropolitan Rapid Transit) is part of the public transport system of the bustling Asian metropolis. Conveniently connected with other mass transit systems, MRT is a convenient way to travel around Bangkok as this metro system helps to escape busy traffic in Thailand’s capital. MRT links central Bangkok with important areas of the city making it very useful for exploring Bangkok.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

Bangkok MRT Metro

MRT Bangkok consists of two connected MRT lines ( MRT Blue Line and MRT Purple Line ) with 54 stations around the city at the moment as Bangkok metro network was significantly expanded. MRT Blue Line connects major business, residential and cultural areas of Bangkok, while MRT Purple Line serves the north-western area of Bangkok.

Recently MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line  were opened but despite being managed by the same company and called MRT, they are actually monorail SkyTrain systems. Even if the first station of MRT Yellow Line is connected to the station of MRT Blue Line and the first station of MRT Pink Line is connected to the station of MRT Purple Line, these new SkyTrain lines are not considered to be a part of the same MRT system and therefore require to use separate tickets.

Bangkok metro connects with city’s other mass transit systems such as BTS SkyTrain , Airport Rail Link and SRT Red Line in several places.

If you are planning to use public transportation in Bangkok, there's a high chance that you will find yourself on MRT Blue Line train at some point as this line passes by various important attractions of the city. However, MRT Purple Line will hardly be of any use for an ordinary traveler.

To simplify things when traveling on Bangkok city train systems such as BTS SkyTrain ,  MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line, consider getting Bangkok Rabbit Card as with it you won't need to queue up and buy separate tickets for each ride. Even if this card can't be used on MRT blue and purple lines, it's still worth it in most cases as mainly BTS lines are used by Bangkok visitors for exploring the city.

MRT Map Bangkok 2024

Current MRT map Bangkok  with all the stations on MRT Blue Line and MRT Purple Line can be seen below. For a larger copy of the map, click on the picture.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

The map of the specific MRT line can be found at all Bangkok metro stations.

The route of MRT line with all the stations on it is also displayed at each platform for you to make sure that the train departing from the platform is going to the direction you need.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

Stations on Bangkok MRT Route

Currently there are 54 metro stations on Bangkok MRT route . Finding one of the stations shouldn’t be difficult if you are staying in the area near one. All entrances to MRT stations are clearly marked and can be easily noticed.

There are automated escalators leading down to the station and at least one of the entrances have a lift near it.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

MRT Bangkok Operating Hours

Bangkok MRT Blue Line operates daily from 06:00 to midnight.

On weekdays, the first train on MRT Blue Line departs from the start of the route at 05:30 and from all other stations just before 06:00. On weekends and public holidays trains start running a bit later but the first departure from all MRT stations is still scheduled not later than 06:03.

The last departure from the first station on the route is scheduled just after 23:00 with the last train reaching the final station at around 00:30. If you are looking to transfer to MRT Purple Line, the last train you can take normally should be at least one hour earlier than the last departure at the station.

Bangkok MRT Purple Line operates from 05:30 to midnight on weekdays and from 06:00 to midnight on weekends and public holidays.

Bangkok Metro Timings

A detailed Bangkok MRT timetable for the specific station can be found at the place.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

MRT Blue Line train frequency depends on the day of the week and the time of the day. On weekdays during rush hour MRT trains depart every 3.5-4 minutes, while during off-peak hours the departures are scheduled every 5-7 minutes. On weekends and public holidays trains on this MRT line depart every 8 minutes, with the exception of the 16:00-19:00 timeframe on Saturdays when departures are slightly more frequent.

MRT Purple Line train frequency during peak hours (06:30-08:30 and 17:00-19:30 on weekdays) is not exceeding 6 minutes, while during normal hours trains should depart not more than every 9 minutes.

Bangkok MRT Fare 2024

Bangkok MRT fare of a Single Journey Ticket, which is valid for a single journey, depends on the distance (the number of stations traveled) and was recently increased.

In 2023 Bangkok MRT fare rates were increased and currently Bangkok MRT price for a single journey is from 17 Baht to 43 Baht per journey on MRT Blue Line.

Bangkok MRT Fare

Tickets on MRT Purple Line cost from 14 Baht to 42 Baht per journey. If your journey requires a change between the Blue and Purple lines, MRT fare can go up to 71 Baht.

The exact Bangkok MRT fare for your journey can be found on the board at the station (see below).

Bangkok Metro Tickets

Where to buy bangkok metro ticket.

There are few ways to buy  Bangkok metro tickets but the most common way is using Ticket Vending Machines. All these machines are cash only and accept Thai Baht coins and banknotes.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

How to buy Bangkok MRT ticket?

These Ticket Vending Machines are easy to use as you can choose between English and Thai language on the touchscreen. Then you just need to choose your destination. If your destination isn’t listed on the screen, most probably you need to swap lines – you can do it by clicking blue or purple button on the top left of the touchscreen. The exact fare will appear on the screen. Tickets must be bought one by one on these Ticket Vending Machines.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

You need 1, 5, 10 Baht coins or 20, 50, 100 Baht banknotes as 2 Baht coins, satangs and larger banknotes are not accepted by the ordinary MRT Ticket Vending Machines. The new ticket machines accept 2 Baht coins and large banknotes but they are still quite rare.

Insert coins and banknotes into dedicated slots.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

When the amount inserted will reach the required fare, your ticket (token) and change (given in coins only) will fall down into the windowed chamber below. Take the token and your change (if any).

You can also buy your ticket from MRT Station Ticket Office. Just stand in a queue, proceed to one of the windows, tell your destination and a number of tickets, pay money and you will get a token and change (if any).

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

Keep in mind that Single Journey Tickets are valid for travel on date of purchase only .

It is also possible to purchase a stored value MRT Card - a smart card which can be stored and topped up value for multiple rides. Bangkok MRT Card can be bought and topped at any MRT Station Ticket Office.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

However, if you are visiting Bangkok only as a tourist for a short stay and will rarely use MRT, getting such a card might be not worth it.

Another option that can be used as Bangkok MRT card is EMV Contactless Card of VISA or Mastercard. EMV stand for "The Europay Mastercard and Visa", which has contactless payment logo on the front or the back of card. EMV Contactless cards that can be used to pay for fares on the MRT Blue Line and Purple Line are the following:

  • Credit card from every Thailand bank issuer and every International bank issuer under VISA or Mastercard brand
  • Debit card from Krungthai bank / UOB bank only for Thailand bank issuers under VISA or Mastercard brand

If you are planning to use other Bangkok city train systems such as BTS SkyTrain and MRT Yellow or Pink Line, consider buying Rabbit Card as it helps to simplify things when traveling on these systems because you don't need to queue up and buy separate tickets for each ride on BTS or MRT Yellow and Pink Lines. Rabbit card can be conveniently  purchased online and picked up at the airport with the help of this website: Rabbit Card online .

How to use MRT ticket?

When you get your token, proceed to the metallic gates. Green arrow signs indicate entry points - you need to choose one of them.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

Touch your token to the indicated place on the metallic part of the gate. The red gate will open then. Quickly walk through as the gate stays open for just a couple of seconds.

Don’t lose the token as at the exit you will have to insert it into the dedicated slot for the exit gate to open.

Taking Bangkok Metro

When you enter the Paid Area of  Bangkok metro station , just follow signs leading to the trains.

On the ground level, you will need to choose the platform. The platforms are named with the last station of the line and you just need to choose correct direction. MRT Blue and Purple lines connect at Tao Poon station and you might need to change the train and platform there.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

When you will get to the platform, you will notice that MRT platforms have yellow arrows pointing towards and back from the track. You should wait in a line behind the yellow arrows pointing to the track.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

The doors of the train will stop directly in front of the arrows pointing back from the track and passengers will disembark the train there.

There’s a map inside the train above the door showing stations on the line. The name of the next station is clearly announced in advance so you have time to prepare for disembarking the train.

If you will choose wrong direction or miss your station, don’t worry and just swap platforms at the next station. You don’t need to buy a new ticket if you just change platforms and don’t leave the station.

Tips for Bangkok MRT

Before exiting MRT station, check the Locality Map and choose the exit which is the most convenient for you.

MRT Bangkok: Fare, Map & Tips for Bangkok Metro

If you see long queues near Ticket Vending Machines and Ticket Offices on one side of the station, just walk to another side (you can do it without entering the Paid Area of metro station) as the situation there might be much better.

Bangkok MRT is very convenient when used with other Bangkok’s Mass Transit Systems such as BTS and Airport Rail Link. Connections between systems are the following:

MRT Blue Line connects with BTS Sukhumvit Line at MRT Sukhumvit, MRT Chatuchak Park and MRT Phahon Yothin stations

MRT Blue Line connects with BTS Silom Line at MRT Si Lom and MRT Bang Wa stations

MRT Blue Line connects with Airport Rail Link at MRT Phetchaburi station

MRT Blue Line connects with MRT Yellow Line at MRT Lat Phrao station

Latest Thailand Entry Requirements

Legal Advisor

After two years of dealing with Covid, international travel is returning to normal. To help welcome visitors back to the Land of Smiles, the Thai government lifted its final restrictions on July 1st, 2022.

From July 1st, the following changes have been implemented for all international travelers.

  • Foreigners do not need to show proof of Covid Insurance.
  • All mandatory hotel quarantine has been removed.
  • Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.
  • Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving.
  • Unvaccinated travelers (including children traveling with unvaccinated parents) will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) 72 hours before departing for Thailand. Proof does not need to be uploaded before traveling.
  • Airlines and Thai Immigration will do random checks to confirm travelers meet Covid prevention requirements (vaccination or Covid test).

Below is a full list of what international travelers need before entering Thailand.

Passport Validity / Visas

The first thing to check before planning to travel to Thailand is the validity of your passport. International travel requires that your passport is not expiring within six months of your travel date. If you have less than six months left on your passport, you cannot enter Thailand.

If you are planning to travel in the future, check your passport early so you know if you need to apply for a new one or not. It is best to check with your local embassy about how long it will take to receive your new passport. As people look to travel again, passport departments are swamped with new applications and this is causing a backlog in many countries.

There are several visas available to foreigners who are planning to visit Thailand. The visa you need will depend on where you are from, your purpose of travel, and how long you intend to stay.

Visa Exemption

A foreign visitor may enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption Program . Nationalities under the Visa Exemption Program may enter Thailand without a visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Upon arriving in Thailand, most nationalities who are part of the Visa Exemption Program may stay for up to 30 days. Certain nationalities can arrive as part of this program, but for a shorter time. It is best to check the country exemption list and confirm how long you can visit Thailand without needing to apply for a Visa.

Tourists arriving under visa exemption are eligible to extend their stay for up to a further 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. The cost to extend is approximately 2000 baht.

There is often confusion about Visa Exemption and “Visa on Arrival”. Visa on Arrival is a 15-day visa for travelers from India,  China, and 16 other countries. If you do not find your country on the Visa Exemption list, it is best to check the Visa on Arrival list.

There are some important things to note for Visa on Arrival:

  • A passport must be valid for at least 30 days.
  • The purpose of the visit is strictly tourist.
  • A visitor must show an address in Thailand where they will be staying.
  • A traveler must have a confirmed return flight.
  • Must show proof of funds to the value of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht for a family.
  • A fee of 2000 baht is paid on arrival. The fee must be paid in cash and in Thai baht.

Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, or the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which can be extended for 90 days twice at a local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to potentially stay in Thailand for 9 months. The Special Tourist Visa is currently scheduled to halt applications in September.

Contact your local Thai Embassy to verify what documents are needed to complete the process. When your visa is approved, the Embassy will place a sticker on your passport, so allow time for potential postage.

For those entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, they need to obtain a Thai visa from their local Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to coming to Thailand.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may apply for a wide range of long-term non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for a long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized at a local Thai Embassy or Consulate. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to foreign visitors for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them.

Proof of Vaccine or Testing

How a visitor enters Thailand will still depend on their vaccination status.

Vaccinated Travelers

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving. A vaccinated traveler will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate either printed or on a digital device and be able to present it if asked.

Thailand does not require visitors to have had a third booster shot. 2 shots (1 shot for Jansen) is considered fully vaccinated and accepted.

Unvaccinated Travelers

Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR test or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) within 72 hours before boarding a flight in their departure country. They will need to have a copy of the test result and be able to present it if asked.

The RT-PCR and Pro-ATK test must be completed by a medical professional and a test report received. The home ATK (RAT) self-test is not acceptable for entering Thailand.

Vaccination and Testing for Children

The testing requirement for children under 18 depends on the vaccination status of their parents. Children traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before entering Thailand. Children traveling with unvaccinated parents will need to complete the same test as their parents within 72 hours of departing their home country.

It is important to note that many airlines are still asking for proof of vaccination or a Covid test before boarding flights. If you cannot produce one of these documents, you might not board the flight.

Though foreigners no longer need to provide evidence of testing or vaccination prior to arriving in Thailand, they are still required. Thai authorities are conducting random checks of international passengers and if a vaccination certificate or test result cannot be shown, a visitor will not be allowed to enter Thailand.

Insurance has become a dirty word during Covid. Seasoned travelers have always understood the importance of having comprehensive Travel Insurance when traveling abroad. Travel insurance protected travelers from unexpected incidents like:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Lost luggage

It was one of those things that people hoped they would never need but regretted not having when needed.

During the Pandemic, proof of insurance became mandatory when visiting countries like Thailand. Over time, people stopped referring to insurance as “Travel Insurance” and always referred to it as “Covid Insurance”. Because you had to have it, it was another hoop to jump through.

The good news is that you no longer need to provide proof of “Covid Insurance” to enter Thailand. But it is recommended because all the things listed above can still happen, and Covid has not disappeared completely.

Foreign visitors are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand if something should happen. Whether it be an accident or personal injury, if a visitor needs medical help, or has a canceled flight, they will need to cover any expenses themselves. Depending on the severity, this could be hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Buying good Travel Insurance shouldn’t break the bank. Protecting yourself is cheaper than medical bills, new flights, and replacing lost luggage.

You can buy Travel Insurance from many companies. But if you are looking for coverage that is designed for Thailand, is trusted by Thai authorities and medical institutions, and offers a helpline with people who speak the local language and know the country’s procedures, it is worth checking out AXA Thailand .

Their policies are well priced, straightforward, offer many benefits to its customers, and can be approved in minutes.

Hotel and Proof of Address Updates

Previously, a foreign visitor would complete an Arrival Card (TM6) before entering Thailand. This requirement has been temporarily removed as part of a new initiative by the Thai government.

A visitor no longer needs to provide proof of a hotel booking before departing their country, but will still need to provide an address when passing through Passport Control in Thailand. This address can be a hotel, home, or friend’s address.

This is especially true with people arriving on a pre-approved visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

From July 1, travelers are no longer required to book a SHA+ hotel and undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. Most hotels have removed their SHA+ quarantine packages, but you will still see the SHA+ badge displayed on hotels.

It is recommended to browse hotels in Thailand on Agoda.com before arriving as it is easier to organize transport to your first night’s rest if pre-booked.

Thailand Pass

From July 1st, 2022, foreign travelers no longer need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering Thailand. The system is still in place but is now a platform where visitors can notify the Thai authorities and medical facilities if they are diagnosed positive for Covid during their stay.

If you need to access the Thailand Pass system while in Thailand, please visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and register by filling in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.

International Arrivals

Travelers do not need to provide any proof of flights before leaving their home country.

There is a lot of discussion about whether a return flight needs to be booked when entering Thailand. Technically, all visitors should have a return flight booked. However, you will not always be asked to present evidence of a return flight.

If a visitor is entering Thailand with a pre-approved visa, or Visa on Arrival, they will often be asked to present details of their exit flight. Sometimes a visitor did not have a return flight and had to book a flight on the spot before being processed through Passport Control. To avoid this, it is best to book an exit flight that can be changed. You can always change your plans once in Thailand.

Domestic flights

There are no longer any restrictions on domestic flights and travel. When entering Thailand at an international terminal, a traveler is free to transit to a domestic flight right away. “Sealed” flights have been removed.

Domestic airlines will not always ask for proof, but it is best to have your vaccination certificate or Covid test result on hand in case you are asked to show it.

Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with a proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
  • These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
  • AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
  • AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.

Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

  • Pfizer–BioNTech or Comirnaty
  • Janssen or Janssen/Ad26.COV2.S
  • AstraZeneca or Covishield
  • Sinopharm or COVILO
  • CoronaVac or SinoVac
  • Sputnik Lite

How to Obtain Travel Insurance

Though COVID-19 insurance is no longer mandatory for entry to Thailand, it is recommended to have comprehensive Travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Good travel insurance covers not only medical expenses relating to Covid but also accident cover, personal damage, loss of possessions, and missed or delayed flights.

It is best to purchase insurance before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online through a reputable insurance provider. The insurance company will provide you with the all-important certificate of cover that you can present to authorities or medical professionals if you need to make a claim.

You may also be asked to present this certificate to the airline before they will allow you to onboard. It’s quick and easy to do online. You can choose your length of policy from 7, 15, 30, 60 days, and 180 days. Just make sure that the policy covers your entire period of stay in Thailand as foreigners are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand and insurance companies will not cover claims for existing conditions.

You may purchase AXA COVID-19 travel insurance within a few minutes. Check them below.

In terms of function, Thailand eSIM is divided into 2 types:

Apart from sim cards, when buying online, you can choose to buy esim for tourists. This option is flexible no matter where you are. You can even buy Thailand esim for Bangkok travel prior to your departure date in many online stores on the Internet. Each of the esim providers has specific pros and cons and I will go into details in the next part.

Buy Bangkok sim cards and esim at the airport

2. Buy at the airport

Alternatively, you can also purchase a SIM card at the airport. Either at Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) or Don Muang Airport (DMK), it takes about 10 minutes to get the SIM card. But there is always a queue of people and prices are sometimes slightly higher.

After landing, just exit the baggage claim area. There are phone shops, convenience stores, and counters operated by Thai mobile operators such as AIS, DTAC, and TrueMove H at the airport arrivals floor. It is a good idea to research these companies’ websites to learn more about their package and rates before arriving in Thailand so you can make an informed decision.

Here are 4 steps to buy travel sim cards for tourists at Bangkok airports (and tips from experienced travelers):

  • For Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport: the arrival hall is on Floor 2, where sim card stores, money exchange, and ATM machines are located.
  • Step 2: Choose the sim card package you want. Choose slowly and compare the detail and rates of each package with each other.
  • Step 3 : Buy the plan you want. You need to show your passport, and the staff there will take photos of you and your passport for record and require you to fill in some basic personal info, including your name and contact details.
  • Step 4 : Pay for the SIM card or any additional services. The staff will activate the sim card and set up your phone so you can use it instantly. Do not to forget asking the staff about the plan (data usage restrictions, international calling rates, and expiry dates)
  • If you buy sim cards by cash, you need to exchange money. Do not exchange money in the restricted area, they can offer poor exchange rates. Instead, exchange money at the arrival hall.
  • You can go for Super Rich currency exchange with good rates and fast services. You just need your passport + the currency you want to exchange into Thai Baht.
  • Always double check your money because even the most reliable money exchange can miscount.

► Depending on which airport in Bangkok you land at, see our guide to buy SIM card / eSIM at Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) and Don Mueang airport (DMK) .

IV. Must-know tips for tourists to staying online in Bangkok

1. internet connectivity in bangkok.

Bangkok has a well-developed and relatively fast internet infrastructure. In general, internet connectivity in Bangkok is good, both in terms of availability and speed. Most hotels, cafes, restaurants and public areas offer free Wi-Fi to tourists.

  • Free Wi-Fi in Bangkok:

For hotels in Bangkok, the quality and availability of internet access can vary depending on the hotel’s location and price range. Luxury hotels in prime locations offer the fastest and most reliable internet connections, while budget hotels may have slower or less reliable connections.

For cafes and restaurants, many in Bangkok offer free Wi-Fi to customers, making it easy for tourists to stay connected while enjoying local cuisine. However, the internet quality can vary depending on the establishment, and some may have time or data usage limitations.

  • Restrictions on Internet use in Bangkok, Thailand

Tourists should be aware of restrictions before using the Internet in Bangkok or other destinations in Thailand. For example, the Thai government has implemented strict laws in regard to online content deemed to be offensive to the monarchy or national security. Accessing such content will result in severe penalties. Besides, websites or social media related gambling, pornography, and illegal activities are also blocked or restricted.

2. Mobile data in Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand with a well-developed mobile data network. Some major mobile operators in Bangkok that offer mobile plans with varying data allowances and speeds are AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H. Each has competitive mobile plans that cater to the needs of different users. They all have an English version of websites and have a store at the airport.

Best mobile network providers in Bangkok, Thailand

Here are some details about these mobile operators:

  • AIS (Advanced Info Service) is the largest mobile operator in Thailand with 45% market share
  • DTAC (Total Access Communication) has a significance presence in the market with 27% market share
  • TrueMove H has market share of 28%
  • All three operators offer extensive 4G and 5G coverage across Bangkok and its surrounding areas, but the quality of coverage and speed may vary depending on specific locations and time of the day.
  • AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H all offer a variety of options, both prepaid and postpaid. Prepaid plans are popular among tourists and short-term visitors.

There are other providers, which are LINE Mobile and AIS Super Wifi which are less renowned. When choosing a provider, it’s important to consider your needs for data, voice, and SMS services, as well as the validity period and pricing of the SIM card. Each provider has their own pros and cons, so it’s a good idea to do some research and compare plans before making a purchase.

Mobile speeds in Bangkok

3. Wi-Fi hotspots

To stay connected while on the go in Bangkok, you can find public Wi-Fi hotspots available across the city, including cafes, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, public parks, transportation hubs like airports and train stations.

To save your data usage, you can take advantage of public WiFi whenever possible. However, be noted that WiFi hotspots are widely available in Bangkok, but they are not always secure.

Pro Tip:

4. Online services for tourists

Bangkok has a wide range of online services available for tourists, including ride-hailing apps like Grab, food delivery apps, and online booking platforms.

Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely used in Bangkok, can be downloaded for free and available in multiple languages, making them easily accessible to tourists who may not speak Thai.

Food delivery apps like Foodpanda, GrabFood and Line Man are also popular in Thailand’s capital, providing tourists with easy access to different local and international cuisine without leaving their hotels or accommodations.

Online booking platforms for tours and attractions such as Klook and GetYourGuide are also popular in Bangkok, allowing travelers to easily book and pay for a wide range of activities, from city tours to temple visits to cooking classes. These platforms have options for different budgets and interests, and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

Buying a Sim Card at Bangkok Airport in 2024

travel card in bangkok

Planning your trip to Thailand and flying to Bangkok and wondering if you can buy a prepaid sim card on arrival at Bangkok International Airport? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know about buying a sim card at Bangkok Airport BKK and finding the best sim cards for your trip to Thailand.

Find out where to buy a sim card in Bangkok, up to date prices as per January 2024, all about tourist sim cards at Bangkok International Airport, my recommendation, a vlog about my arrival and my experiences, a comparison of the Thailand prepaid sim cards, the best e-sim cards for Thailand, info about international sim cards and more.

In 2022 I visited 62 different countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries. All for fun and partly because of my  full time travel blogger  job. Being completely nomadic I am constantly on the road and in a new country pretty much every week. With a lot of confidence I dare to say that this made me a top travel sim card expert.

Local prepaid sim cards or e-sim cards saves you from excessive high roaming costs and slow overseas data roaming plans. These data roaming plans from your home provider operate abroad with reduced internet speed and since there is 5G everywhere in Bangkok, it would be frustrated if you are still using a 3G signal.

Everywhere I travel I write sim card guides and as I am also trying to travel to every country in the world you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world on Traveltomtom: Asia , Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia , Singapore , Hong Kong , Bali , Indonesia , Australia ,  Sydney , Melbourne , New Zealand ,  Europe , United Kingdom , Germany , Spain , France , Italy , Turkey , Dubai , USA  and many more.

Of course I also wrote an extensive guide about the best prepaid sim card for Thailand in 2024  with more detailed info about prepaid sim cards for visiting Thailand. If you are looking to get an e-sim card for Thailand then check out my guide for finding the best e-sim cards for traveling to Thailand .

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends buying a sim card at Bangkok Airport BKK on arrival. It is the most convenient place to buy a local prepaid sim card for your trip to Thailand and it is affordable.

Which prepaid sim card exactly is very difficult to say as pretty much all of them offer the same and they all offer 5G ready tourist sim cards. My personal preference goes out to those sim cards that offer max data speed. More about it later! It is a very close call, but Traveltomtom recommends buying an AIS prepaid sim card at Bangkok Airport. More expensive, better performance.

However, if you would like to arrive prepared for your trip to Bangkok and want to be online as soon as the plane lands then look into ordering an e-sim card for traveling to Thailand. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Thailand via Airalo , SimOptions or Nomad .

For more info check out my article about the best e-sim cards for traveling to Thailand in 2024 .

Buying a sim card at Bangkok Airport is more expensive then buying a sim card in a phone store in Bangkok city center. If you can wait and want the cheapest local prepaid sim card then check out my complete guide for buying a tourist sim card for Thailand in 2024 .

If Bangkok is one of the stops on a trip to many several countries then you also want to look into so called international world travel sim cards. These sim cards let you connect and use data in multiple countries. For more info have a look at my comparison about the best sim cards for traveling internationally in 2024 .

Be aware that your phone needs to be unlocked if you want to use a Thailand prepaid sim card. This also applies to international sim cards as well as e-sim cards. If you are unsure if your phone is locked or unlocked contact your mobile internet provider from home.

In general phones bought in Europe, Australia or Asia are unlocked and phones from the USA tend to be often locked.

Best e-sim cards for Thailand

An e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Bangkok in 2024. You arrange everything online in just a couple steps and no need to visit a phone store and swap physical prepaid sim cards anymore.

You order an e-sim card for Thailand on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Thailand e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Bangkok it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Check out Traveltomtom's guide with everything you need to know before buying an e-sim card for Thailand in 2024 , including a comparison of the best e-sim cards for Thailand and answers to all your FAQ's.

Airalo is a reliable e-sim card provider which Traveltomtom has used in more than 50 countries around the world.

Check out the following amazing e-sim card deals for traveling to Bangkok:

  • 50 GB data + 100 minutes for 10 days = $9.90 USD
  • Unlimited data + calls for 15 days = $19.95 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for Thailand directly online via Airalo .

E-sim cards are a great way to get connected, but personally for longer trips to Thailand I mostly buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Thailand. But that is a personal thing.

There are also other e-sim card providers for Thailand like Nomad and SimOptions . They offer the exact same DTAC Happy Tourist e-sim card for Thailand. Nomad has often even discounted prices.

Read more about why I prefer prepaid sim cards over e-sim cards in my article with the best e-sim cards for Thailand in 2024 .

Best ways to get around Thailand

Let me also help you out with how to get around Thailand as I found in 12Go Asia the perfect match for finding tickets for: bus, boat, train, shuttles, long distance taxis and even domestic flights. Try the search engine below.

Powered by 12Go system

You order your tickets directly online and get a confirmation on your email and have your ticket on your phone, easy as that. No more paper tickets and travel agencies needed. You can choose your seat, find the time tables and choose your preferred way of travel depending on the availability and price.

Why buying a sim card in Bangkok

dtac sim card store bangkok airport

No need to tell you that if you have no data connection on your phone life suddenly becomes a lot more complicated. No more ordering Uber (Grab in Thailand), finding nearby bars and restaurants,  getting directions, staying in touch with friends or checking your banking apps or sports results.

Having a working data connection on your phone makes traveling to Bangkok much more fun!

Also be careful with relying on public WiFi, although everywhere available, it is often also pretty unstable and can be really slow. Begging for the WiFi password is annoying enough already, but also keep in mind that public WiFi is through an unsecured network. The use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data.

Local prepaid sim cards, international sim cards and e-sim cards for Bangkok use a secured network and your data is protected. That said, many travelers still use VPN services for extra data protection.

Where to buy a sim card for Bangkok

where to buy sim card bangkok airport

You can easily buy sim cards for Bangkok on the internet. Keep in mind that these sim cards are either international sim cards that will be shipped to your home address before your Bangkok trip or e-sim cards that operate through a third party.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Thailand on the internet is convenient but the cheapest way to stay connected when traveling to Bangkok is a local prepaid sim card and these you can only buy in Bangkok, not online.

You can NOT buy an e-sim card for Thailand on arrival, but can only order Thailand e-sim cards on the internet. See my detailed Thailand e-sim card guide for finding the best e-sim cards for traveling to Thailand in 2024.

Suvernabhumi International Airport Bangkok - BKK

buying sim card at bangkok airport

Buying a sim card for Thailand at Bangkok International Airport is the fastest way to get connected when you arrive in Bangkok. Everywhere around the airport you will find sim card shops from the mobile internet providers in Thailand that are happily selling sim cards for tourists.

Don’t worry you can’t miss the sim card shops at Bangkok Airport, they are everywhere! As soon as you walk out of the plane and follow the signs to immigration you will already see sim card stores everywhere.

Then near the luggage belts you will find many sim card shops all around the baggage claim hall. And with many I mean probably more than 10!

If you still haven’t gotten your sim card for Thailand after you pick up your bag and walk through the customs bag check and arrive in the arrival hall then there you will again see big stores from the 3 mobile internet operators in Thailand: AIS, True Move and DTAC.

Trust me there is no escaping and there are signs everywhere with: ‘buy your sim card for Thailand here’.

Opening hours

No need to worry about the opening hours of the sim card shops at Bangkok Airport BKK if you arrive super late. All the mobile phone stores are open 24 hours.

bangkok airport sim card cash only

More challenging is that a lot of sim card stores, especially in the baggage claim hall and before customs only accept cash! This is kind of annoying as you just arrived in Thailand and probably don’t have Thai Baht yet.

There are ATM’s all around as well as currency exchange. Mind you that all ATM’s in Thailand charge a 220 THB fee for withdrawing money. That is $6.5 USD per transaction. This applies to all ATM’s in Bangkok, there is no escaping!

If you want to pay for your Thailand sim card by card you have to wait until you are in the arrival hall. All phone shops in the arrival hall accept credit card payments.

Bangkok BKK Airport has good working free WiFi, so if you are not convinced by the local prepaid sim card deals you can always use the WiFi here to order an e-sim card for Thailand.

However, it is no secret that Thailand sim cards at Bangkok Airport are more expensive than shops away from the airport. At Bangkok Airport they sell tourist sim cards for tourist prices.

In case you forgot to buy a sim card, you are reading this article after you already left the Bangkok BKK Airport or if you simply want the cheapest Bangkok sim card deals then you should visit any random phone store or official retail store in Bangkok where they sell prepaid sim cards for Thailand.

Bangkok city center

If you want the cheapest sim card deals for Thailand you have to wait until you reach the city center. Find the nearest phone shop on Google Maps and buy your sim card for Thailand here.

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Thailand prepaid sim card in an official retail store from one of the mobile internet operators in Thailand: DTAC, True Move or DTAC.

There are many official phone stores all over Bangkok, just head to any bigger shopping mall and you will find them.

You can also buy prepaid sim cards in convenient stores like 7Eleven, etc. Keep in mind that you will have to do the sim card registration yourself and that the staff won’t be able to help you much as they are no sim card experts. The prepaid sim card deals at convenient stores in Bangkok are often in Thai language only, so good luck with that.

It is a cheap way to get a sim card for Thailand but complicated and you might need to go to an official store to complete the registration after all anyway. Therefore Traveltomtom does not recommend buying a sim card for Thailand in a convenient store in Bangkok.

For more info about buying a sim card in Bangkok city center check out my guide finding you the best prepaid sim card for Thailand in 2024 .

Registration Process

Everyone buying a prepaid sim card in Bangkok will have to show any form of photo ID, so bring your passport. Your new Thailand sim card will be registered on your passport number and name and a copy will be taken in the store.

If you want to avoid this then you can order an international sim card online or get an e-sim card for Thailand. No passport registration is needed for these sim cards.

Free tourist sim card for Thailand

free thailand sim card

If you are flying to Bangkok with Thai Airways they will already give you a free sim card for Thailand in the plane just before landing. This is a DTAC Easy Holiday Happy sim card for tourists. The package says: free sim card + 8 GB internet.

FALSE ADVERTISEMENT DTAC... may be smart marketing, but I don't like it!

The free internet allowance is literally just 20 MB and NOT 8 GB. Really annoying DTAC! Anyway don’t be lured with ‘free sim card for Thailand’ because all mobile internet operators offer you a free sim card, you just pay for the data package you activate.

Best 4G/5G network in Bangkok in 2024

If you are just visiting Bangkok only then then it does not matter which mobile internet provider you choose. All tourist sim cards will work excellent in Bangkok. Thailand is one of the better connected countries in the world and there is almost everywhere 5G in Thailand, country wide! If you find a spot in Bangkok without a 5G signal you are very unlucky.

If you are traveling in Thailand and looking for the best 5G network then have a look at my guide for buying a prepaid sim card in Thailand in 2024  with updated info about the best 4G/5G network and fastest data in Thailand in 2024.

Data speed Bangkok

data speed bangkok sim card

With a local prepaid sim card you can expect excellent data speed. I ran multiple speed tests on 5G and what you see in the above picture is the average download and upload data speed result.

Sometimes I got a data speed of more than 100Mbps and I also saw upload speed of more than 100Mbps.

If you want the fastest data speed on your Thailand sim card then it is important to ask about it in the sim card store when buying a prepaid sim card. A lot of the tourist sim cards in Thailand have capped data speed, see below.

If fast mobile internet is important to you then get a Thailand prepaid sim card with max data speed up to 100 Mbps.

Prepaid sim cards deals at Bangkok Airport in 2024

Prices for Thailand tourist sim cards and data packages constantly change. Traveltomtom tries to keep all the info as up to date as possible. Your input is appreciated. Please leave a comment below.

All info in this article is up to date as per January 2024. $1 USD = 35 THB or 100 THB = $2.86 USD.

ais prepaid sim card for thailand prices bangkok airport

  • 15 GB data at MAX SPEED (100 Mbps) + free social media + 100 THB calling credit for 8 days = 299 THB - $8.7 USD
  • Unlimited data at 4 Mbps + free social media + 50 THB calling credit for 15 days = 699 THB
  • Unlimited data at 10 Mbps + free social media + 50 THB calling credit for 30 days = 999 THB
  • 25 GB data at MAX SPEED (100 Mbps) + free social media + 100 THB calling credit for 8 days = 499 THB
  • 100 GB data at MAX SPEED (100 Mbps) + free social media + 200 THB calling credit for 15 days = 1,399 THB
  • Unlimited data at MAX SPEED (100 Mbps) + free social media + 50 THB calling credit for 30 days = 1,699 THB - $50 USD

  • Unlimited data + calls + 100 THB international calling credit for 8 days = 399 THB - $11.6 USD
  • Unlimited data + calls + 100 THB international calling credit for 15 days = 699 THB
  • Unlimited data + calls + 100 THB international calling credit for 30 days = 999 THB

They also have Thailand tourist sim card deals:

  • 15 GB data + free social media + 100 THB calling credit for 16 days = 299 THB - $8.7 USD
  • 30 GB data + free social media + 100 THB calling credit for 30 days = 599 THB

dtac sim card bangkok airport 2

At DTAC they make it of course complicated. We already saw that in the plane they hand out 'free Thailand sim card with 8 GB', which in reality is just 20 MB! Also when it comes to the prepaid sim card deals they sell across Bangkok Airport it is a little messy as every other shop has different prepaid sim card deals. Always ask for the guaranteed data speed when buying a DTAC sim card.

The above packages all claim to have max data speed, but when I asked some employees would say 10 Mbps, the be countered by another employee saying no it is 100 Mbps. Like... uh cant trust you guys.

dtac sim card bangkok airport 1

Then I found another store above and they displayed all sim card deals stated with 10 Mbps data speed.

dtac sim card bangkok airport

And then another store had these DTAC prepaid sim card offers. As you can see at the first picture I showed you a package for 299 with unlimited data at max speed for 8 days, but on the above picture the same package for 16 days.

This sucks DTAC, would be easy for tourists if you could uniform your prices at the different DTAC stores. Would also be easier for me to recommend DTAC sim card for traveling in Thailand.

Best sim card for Bangkok in 2024

For Traveltomtom it is an easy conclusion that if you are a heavy data user and fan of fast mobile internet then the easiest and fastest way to get connected is ordering an e-sim card for Thailand on the internet. You arrange everything online within a couple minutes and for $9.90 USD you get 50 GB data.

You are online as soon as the plane touched the ground and you can order this DTAC e-sim card for Thailand via Airalo , SimOptions or Nomad  in just a couple minutes.

How do you know if you are a heavy data user? Simply go to the settings on your phone and check how much data you use per application. Is Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook topping the list than most probably you are indeed a heavy data user.

If you prefer to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival at Bangkok Airport then always check the max data speed. As you have seen there are so many different prepaid sim card plans for tourists available, but all have different specifications. I would personally recommend a sim card with no data speed restrictions. These sim cards are more expensive though.

An advantage of a Thailand prepaid or an e-sim card with unlimited data with max 5G data speed is that you don’t even need to connect to public and unsecured WiFi of your hotel.

After comparing all the Thailand prepaid sim cards Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that AIS is the best sim card for Bangkok in 2024. DTAC and True Move tourist sim cards are very good second best options. I just like that AIS is very clear about the prepaid sim card deals they offer. DTAC sim cards at Bangkok Airport are a mess as their prices differ at every shop and it makes me wonder what the max data speed really is.

However, last time when I traveled to Thailand and bought a sim card at Bangkok I got a DTAC sim card. Haha! Why? Because I was in Bangkok for just 2 days and there was another specific reason. Watch my vlog about buying a sim card at Bangkok Airport below and you will find out.

Buying a sim card for Bangkok on arrival at Bangkok International Airport is the most convenient place to get connected when arriving in Thailand. But for that convenience you pay a couple dollar extra.

If you want the cheapest sim card deals in Bangkok you should not buy a sim card at Bangkok BKK Airport on arrival, but at a mobile phone shop near your hotel. Go where the local go and save a couple dollars. In that case you want to check out my guide for buying a prepaid sim card in Thailand in 2024 .

But as said before my first recommendation is ordering an e-sim cards for your trip to Bangkok on the internet. For just $9.90 USD you already get 50 GB data for 8 days and you arrange everything directly online.

Check out all the Thailand e-sim card offers in my guide for buying an e-sim card for Thailand in 2024 .

Order a prepaid sim card for Bangkok online

If your phone isn’t e-sim compatible and you would like to order a sim card for Bangkok on the internet then look into the following.

Arrive prepared in Bangkok with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Bangkok, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

Also a last reminder that you can order an e-sim card for Bangkok directly online if your phone is e-sim compatible and arrange everything within just a couple minutes you are all set to travel to Bangkok.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Thailand via Airalo , SimOptions or Nomad .

Want more info about e-sim cards? Then check out my article about the best e-sim cards for Thailand in 2024 .

Local prepaid sim cards for Bangkok vs. e-Sim cards and international sim cards

With a local prepaid sim card you get much more data for the same price and the best network connection and data speed possible. With an international sim card or an e-sim card for Bangkok you are basically a guest on another mobile operators network. Which means your data speed is potentially lower, especially during peak hours when you are being put in the back of the line to use the available bandwidth.

Therefore Traveltomtom prefers local prepaid sim cards over e-sim cards or international sim cards for traveling to Bangkok. Much more info about using e-sim cards for traveling to Thailand in my detailed article with all the pros and cons about Thailand e-sim cards.

However, it is a fact that e-sim cards are very convenient. You just buy them online, install them and you are all set. When I have a 1-2 day layover in Bangkok I also order an e-sim card online.

I am sure the above tips for buying a prepaid sim card for your trip to Bangkok, my tips about e-sim cards and staying connected in general were helpful tips for traveling to Thailand .
