Kaikoura Swim with Dolphins: Best Deals + Photos + Tips

Swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura is a top highlight of my time being “stuck” in New Zealand, and it’s an absolute must-do for any South Island adventure.

Kaikoura is one of New Zealand’s most popular coastal tourist spots, best known for its easy access to marine life.

From whale watching tours to sea kayaking with seals to swimming with dusky dolphins or watching seabirds from a boat, the opportunities to get up close and personal with nature are endless. These opportunities make Kaikoura one of the best places to visit in the South Island .

kaikoura dolphin cruise

But if you want a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience that you’ll never forget, a Kaikoura dolphin swim is guaranteed to blow your mind. No South Island road trip would be complete without one!

Here’s everything you need to know before booking your Kaikoura swim with dolphins experience, including where to find the best deals, what to expect and other helpful tips to ensure you have the best time in the water with these majestic creatures.

Where can you swim with dolphins in New Zealand?

There are a few different organised tour options if you want to swim with wild dolphins in New Zealand.

  • E-Ko Tours in Picton, Marlborough Sounds
  • Dolphin Encounter in Kaikoura
  • Black Cat , Ecoseaker and Onuku Farm Hostel in Akaroa, Banks Peninsula
  • Dolphin Seafaris in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty

I’ve done two dolphin swims in NZ so far, the Marlborough Sounds one with E-Ko Tours and the Kaikoura Dolphin Encounter .

You used to be able to swim with bottlenose dolphins in the Bay of Islands (the top of the North Island) but due to changes in the dolphin behaviour seen in local pods, the Department of Conservation introduced restrictions on human interaction with dolphins.

The other dolphin swim options around the country have DOC permits and operate under strict protocols regarding how and when they interact with these beauties.

If you are on a private boat and you see dolphins you are allowed to swim with them however if there are juveniles in the pod then it’s a no go. Obviously when you’re not a professional dolphin spotter or marine biologist it’s going to be tough to be sure that there’s no babies around, so better safe than sorry and stay out of the water unless you’re on an organised dolphin swim trip.

How to get to Kaikoura

Kaikoura is just over 1.5 hours south of Blenheim on SH1 (128km), or 2h 20m north of Christchurch (180km).

In 2016 a large earthquake hit the Kaikoura coast which resulted in massive road damage and closed the main highway on and off for a few years, however the road has been remade and is now totally fine to drive during the day.

They are still doing some reinforcement work during nights especially so if you’re planning on leaving or arriving late, be sure to check the most up to date road conditions .

What is Kaikoura Dolphin Encounter?

Dolphin Encounter is a local tourism operator that has been running Kaikoura swim with dolphins experiences for almost 30 years. Their base is located on the Esplanade in Kaikoura, with a café and gift shop attached for before or after your tour.

Dolphin Encounter runs two tours a day in summer (Oct-Apr), one at 8.30am and one at 12.30pm. From May to September the tour happens once a day at 10.15am.

Each tour takes about 3.5 hours from beginning to end, including getting ready at the base and then heading out to the boat. You’ll be on the boat for about 2.5 hours, and there’s usually between 30 and 40 minutes of swim time spread over two to four swims.

The dolphins in Kaikoura are dusky dolphins, which are some of the most playful and interactive dolphins in New Zealand. They love showing off with jumps, they’ll circle you as you’re swimming, and they’ll get right up close to check you out.

After the swimming time is over you’ll get to take off your wetsuit and get into something warm and dry, then you’ll have some viewing time up the front of the boat to watch the dolphins from above water too.

How to get the best deals on your Kaikoura Dolphin Encounter

The usual price for swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura is $210 per adult or $195 for kids aged 8-14 years old. If you just want to go on the boat to watch, not swim, tickets are $105 for adults or $65 for kids 5-14 years old.

You can buy tickets on Klook , one of my favourite websites for booking adventures in New Zealand and all around the world. Klook has a best price guarantee so if you find a cheaper price for the same experience, they’ll refund you the difference.

If you’re booking last minute (i.e. if you plan on doing it in the next week) you’ll be able to find the best deal on Bookme.co.nz , New Zealand’s top travel deals website. Right now the Bookme price is showing $167.90, which is a 20% discount.

What’s it like to swim with dolphins?

In a word, it’s magical!

Jumping into the open ocean and landing in a pod of dolphins is pretty insane, and it’s hard to describe how it feels.

Each Kaikoura dolphin swim is going to be different, but we literally spent ten minutes straight in the middle of this gigantic pod of dusky dolphins, with some of them coming right up to us and circling us which means they want to play. Racing a dolphin going around in circles is a sure-fire way to give yourself a headache, but who else can say they raced a dolphin?!

It’s a crazy feeling because you’re kind of head-down in the ocean looking everywhere for the dolphins and then suddenly one will zoom up from underneath you either wanting to have a closer look at you or trying to play.

kaikoura dolphin cruise

The actual tour experience will depend on many things as they just go where the dolphins are, but most trips will give you two or three opportunities to jump in the water with the dolphins.

Also yes, it’s cold.

My dolphin swim in Kaikoura was in March so the beginning of autumn and maaaan it was chilly. But you’re suited up in a full body thick wetsuit (plus gloves and boots in winter) so once the initial shock of cold water on your face has subsided, you’ll be good to go.

kaikoura dolphin cruise

It is okay to swim with wild dolphins?

New Zealand has strict rules about human interaction with wildlife and the dolphin swim operators are permitted to run these tours by DOC.

There are restrictions around how long you can spend with the dolphins, you can’t swim near any babies, and DOC does continuous research on any potential adverse effects on the dolphins. You also aren’t allowed to touch the dolphins at all for obvious reasons.

What sets these experiences apart from so many dolphin swims overseas is that these dolphins are totally wild . They aren’t baited, attracted or trapped in any way, they have total free movement and can swim away from the boats and swimmers if they want to.

I strongly oppose any tourism experiences that involve captive wildlife for entertainment purposes so you’ll never find me swimming with dolphins in any other way except for the open ocean.

kaikoura dolphin cruise

It it safe?

Swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura is like swimming in the open ocean anywhere else, so you obviously need to be a confident swimmer.

You don’t have to wear life jackets as these can make it harder to float on your stomach and keep your head down, which is the best way to spot dolphins, but the wetsuits are so thick and buoyant that they keep you afloat anyway.

If you do really want to wear a life jacket that option is available too.

The sea conditions will differ depending on the day, when we went out it was a moderate swell and it was definitely a bit choppy. I’m confident in the water and grew up around boats so I was fine, but most of our tour group did end up getting seasick by the end of the trip.

If you know you get seasick then it’s best to take medication before the trip, or consider doing the Marlborough Sounds dolphin swim with E-Ko Tours who guarantee you won’t get sick (as they stay in the Sounds where it’s totally flat!).

Helpful tips to get the most out of your Kaikoura dolphin swim

Use a gopro to get the best photos.

All my underwater photos are shot on my GoPro. I use a GoPro Hero 7 Black , but I’m keen to upgrade to the new GoPro Hero 9 which has a screen on the front so you can see what you’re shooting even in selfie mode.

I also have a floating mount for my GoPro to use while snorkelling, this way even if the leash comes off my wrist the GoPro will stay on top of the water with a bright yellow handle so it’s easy to find. You can buy these floating handles at Dolphin Encounter, or buy one on Amazon here .

kaikoura dolphin cruise

Give yourself a few potential days in case sea conditions are bad

The open ocean is unpredictable and sometimes the boats won’t be able to go out. I’d recommend setting aside a few potential days in Kaikoura and booking a tour on the first day, then you can move it to the following days if necessary.

Take a towel and a set of warm, dry clothes for afterwards

After swimming for at least half an hour on and off, you’re going to be cold! Be sure to take some super warm clothes, preferably with a windbreaker, so you can get changed out of your wetsuit and then stay toasty while you dolphin watch and head back into shore.

kaikoura dolphin cruise

When is the best time of the year to swim with dolphins in Kaikoura

You can swim with dolphins year-round! Dolphin Encounter say that in winter they’re found a bit further out to sea compared to summer, but tours in both seasons still have a really high likelihood of finding and swimming with dolphins.

Other things to do in Kaikoura

  • Get amongst the seafood scene with fresh crayfish from Nin’s Bin, a legendary food stall about 20 mins north of Kaikoura
  • Spot the baby seals playing in rock pools at Ohau Point Seal Colony
  • Spot some whales on a whale watching tour, or go all out with a Wings Over Whales whale watching flight
  • Book a kayak trip with Kaikoura Kayaks and head out to sea to spot seals, dolphins, albatross and other creatures

Where to stay in Kaikoura

We stayed in an incredible Kaikoura glamping spot, one of my favourite glamping spots in New Zealand !

PurePods are a brilliant locally-owned glamping company with a few different locations in the Canterbury area, and we spent a night in their Manakau PurePod , 20 minutes inland from Kaikoura on rural land surrounded by mountains.

If you’re looking for somewhere off the grid with incredible views and stargazing opportunities, this epic little glass box is the perfect place for you.

Best Time to Go Swimming with Dolphins in Kaikoura

Kaikoura is a year-round destination for dolphin swimming, but the best time to go depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. The summer months (December through February) are typically the busiest and most popular time for dolphin swimming, as the weather is warm and the sea conditions are calm.

This is the best time to go if you’re looking for a more social and lively encounter, as the dolphins tend to be more playful during this time.

If you’re interested in seeing larger pods of dolphins and having a more peaceful encounter, then the winter months (June through August) are the ideal time to go. During this time, the sea conditions can be rougher, but you’ll also have the chance to see other wildlife such as whales and seals.

Spring and fall (March through May and September through November) are considered the shoulder seasons in Kaikoura, and are a good time to go if you want to avoid the crowds. The weather is generally mild and the sea conditions are often calmer than in the winter months.

Ultimately, the best time to go swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura depends on your preferences and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

One of our booking forms stated a departure time which ended up being the checkin time but a second form was correctly marked

Both of us ended up being extremely sea sick on the dolphin encounter which could have been prevented if we had been advised to purchase (on the booking form) motion sickness tablets from the local pharmacy prior to sailing. This would have added to our comfort and pleasure. It would have been useful to have staff check my wetsuit headgear and goggle fitting before entering the water at least at the beginning. Mine was not fitted correctly and so really hindered my participation, enjoyment and comfort. Overall still a good experience aided by the extremely personable, friendly and professional staff.

We didn't really have many expectations as we had originally wanted to go on the Dolphin Encounter but are really pleased we ended up doing the Seals. It was a very personal and intimate experiences as opposed to the big tourist boats of Dolphin Encounters

Everything was very easy, good customer service would highly recommend.

I would rate this as excellent but unfortunately due to engine problems on the boat we were unable to swim with the dolphins. They were very apologetic and we received a full prompt refund. Was very disappointed but we were lucky enough to see dolphins. The staff were brilliant and tried everything to fix the problem but to no avail. Will definitely be back to do this again.

The service was excellent.

I would have rated this excursion excellent had I not experienced sea sickness (motion sickness). None the less, I highly recommend this excursions just remember to take the medication Dramamine if your prone to motion sickness. It was quite magical swimming among these highly intelligent creatures.

Comment by: Alicia - Everything New Zealand on 17th Sep 17 at 21:32

do you provide life jacket for swimming with dolphin and snorkelling at Dolphin Encounter

The operator does not provide any life jackets due to the fact the wetsuit they provide is very buoyant. This will keep you afloat, also a life jacket keeps your head above the water and all of the dolphin action is beneath the service. So this would impair your ability to enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group on 11th Jul 17 at 15:18

What age can you swim with dolphins.

The minimum age for swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura is 8. Children under 8 and over 3 are welcome on board the boat (dolphin watch) but must be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 25th Oct 15 at 10:20

If I can't swim very well, would I be able to wear a lifejacket so I could participate in the Dolphin encounter?

You don't have to be a great swimmer to go swimming with the dolphins in Kaikoura however you do have to be confident enough to be in the open water without hanging on to anything. There is additional buoyancy aids such as float boards and noodles which you can use in the water. As long as you feel comfortable enough swimming a short distance away from the boat then you will be fine.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 27th Sep 14 at 12:02

What to wear underneath a wetsuit for warmth and comfort. and does the Dolphin Encounter boat have any cubicle to change in privacy?

For the Dolphin Encounter, you will be provided with a two-piece 5mm wetsuit, mask and snorkel, flippers and a hood. Under your wetsuit you just need to wear your swimwear and nothing else. It is easier if you wear your swimwear underneath your clothes on the day of your dolphin swim and you will be given time to put your wetsuit on.

Everything you need to know about your Dolphin Encounter Tour

Find information & tips on how to get the most from your trip.

The Kaikoura Coast is an exposed coastal area and the weather can be changeable. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before you travel to Kaikoura especially if you are travelling here for the day to specifically participate on the tour. You can check your phone app for Kaikoura’s weather or alternatively log in to the New Zealand Metservice on www.metservice.co.nz . You can also check the weather and sea conditions by calling us on 0800 733 365 and we will be happy to assist you.

The water temperature rarely rises above 18 degrees celsius in the summer months and drops to around 9 degrees celsius in the winter months. To keep you comfortable in the water we provide good quality 5 mm wetsuits, which consist of a full body one piece overall with a 5mm jacket which fits over the top, providing 10mm of insulation around your core.

In the colder months of winter we also provide you with gloves and booties.

All boats have deck showers available to help you warm up when you have finished swimming.

It is advisable to wear warm clothing and sensible footwear when checking in for the tour.  Before departure, all swimmers will be supplied with a well-fitted wetsuit to ensure that throughout the swim they are as warm and comfortable as possible.

Swimmers will wear the wetsuit from the departure point, during the short transfer to the harbour and for the duration of the tour until the swim part of the tour has been completed.  We advise all swimmers to take their warm clothing on board with them because at the end of the swim you will change back into your warm dry clothing.  This helps you to warm up again while the tour concludes and while we travel back to the harbour.  A small bag which is large enough to hold your warm clothing and is taken aboard the boat is a good idea. If you have not brought a bag with you, we sell reusable bags at the check-in counter for a very small fee.

All swimmers are fitted with a good quality wetsuit prior to departure which comprises a full 5mm body one piece overall and a 5mm jacket.  We also provide a hood, mask snorkel and fins.

You are welcome to bring your own gear.  You can also mix and match with the gear we provide; e.g. bring your own mask, snorkel and fins whilst using our wetsuit, jacket and hood.

Please note that full face snorkel masks are not permitted on our tours for safety reasons.

Prior authorisation must be sought for use of weight belts, and their use is at the discretion of the Skipper subject to sea conditions on the day - please contact our Customer Service Team for more information on this.

Everyone can bring phones and cameras to capture the most brilliant pictures imaginable. Remember that you are out on the open ocean and should be aware of the risk of sea spray getting on your devices. We have GoPro cameras available for hire and it would be advisable to reserve one in advance as they are in high demand.

Swimmers should also bring:

Swimsuit, towel, warm clothing such as a jacket and a hat, and a small bag which is able to accommodate your clothing on board the boat. It is also a good idea to bring sunblock and a sunhat. Towels can be hired for a small fee plus a bond from the check in counter.

If you have forgotten to bring your swimsuit, we have a limited number of swimsuits available for hire, so please enquire at the check in counter.

Please also bring sea sickness medication with you if you are prone to motion sickness. Sea Legs (medication) and ginger tablets are available at reception.

Watchers should also bring:

Warm clothing.

The Kaikoura coastline is an expansive area of deep water open to the Pacific Ocean, in order to maximize your experience swimming with the dolphins we would recommend that previous snorkelling experience is an advantage, along with a good level of water confidence.  Being an experienced swimmer is helpful, but it is not essential, just so long as you are confident in the water.  We do have flotation devices like kickboards and buoyancy aids if a little extra assistance is needed.  Please note that our crew do not enter the water on our tours.

Children are classed as those aged 3 to 14 years (inclusive).

The minimum age limit for children wanting to swim on the tour is 8 years of age and all children aged 8 to 14 years must be accompanied by an adult both in the water and on board the boat at all times.

All children aged 3 to 14 years watching the dolphins from the safety of the boat, must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Children under the age of 3 years are not permitted on the tour.

Management and skippers reserve the right to increase minimum age limits of children participating on the tour should sea conditions not be suitable on the day. Conditions will be assessed immediately prior to tour time, and if they are deemed unsuitable for children, a full refund is available to those not able to take the tour.

Dolphin Encounter Child Policy

We try our best to accommodate all potential customers wishing to participate on our tours, including those with limited mobility. However there are a few restrictions due to the nature of what we do and the limited space on the vessels that we use.

Generally we are unable to take wheelchairs on board, but we can accommodate passengers who are able to access our vessels via jetty or trailer steps and are able to sit unaided once aboard.

Swimming with the dolphins is a physically demanding activity which requires a reasonable degree of personal fitness. Participants must also be able to wear a wetsuit, and move themselves onto and off the boarding platforms at the stern of the vessels without assistance.

Contact our Customer Experience Manager at [email protected] about what we can do to help facilitate the best possible tour experience for you and we will always try our best to assist.

Our tours are an open ocean experience and sea sickness is often experienced, even in slight seas some customers find themselves dealing with motion sickness.

We recommend taking medication to combat this prior to your tour. We do sell Sea Legs and ginger tablets at reception if you don't have anything with you and have not ben able to get to a pharmacy ahead of your tour.

Sea sickness is not grounds for seeking a refund from the tour.

We are operating in line with The NZ COVID-19 Protection Framework.

Other Information & FAQs

Dolphin Encounter tours are approximately 4 hours in duration from check in time to the return time to our operating base.

We work in nature with wild animals and tour duration is subject to wildlife location and sea conditions on the day.

Please allow ample time for your experience, especially if you have onward travel plans with public transport.  Tour duration can vary by up to an hour, so we cannot guarantee your return time.

The time on the boat at sea is approximately 2.5 hours depending on the location of the dolphins.

The total time spent swimming with the dolphins will depend on a number of factors which can vary.

  • The behaviour of the dolphins at the time
  • The travel time to the dolphins and the sea conditions

Generally if the dolphins are interactive the swim time can be from 20 to 40 minutes.

Quite close, usually about an arm’s length away. The dolphins are smart and they are extremely good at judging distance in the water and will come very close without touching you.

Generally we would recommend the morning departures as sea conditions can typically be calmer and the dolphins can be more interactive at this time.  The number of dolphins does not usually vary from tour time to tour time.

Due to the beauty of interacting with wild dolphins, we can never predict what might happen on each of our tours and as such, can never guarantee the number of dolphins we swim with. The pods we encounter vary in size and we regularly enjoy swimming with both small and large pods of dusky dolphins.

We do not have a permit which allows us to see the sperm whales. Whale watching tours by boat are operated by Whale Watch Kaikoura Ltd and there are also options to see the whales from the air with helicopters of fixed wing aircraft.

Our tours operate in the open ocean and this of course means that you may see all kinds of wildlife. While sharks inhabit the open ocean waters, we are fortunate in Kaikoura that there have been no serious shark attacks.

Because we swim with and watch wild dusky dolphins, we are never able to guarantee their presence. However, Kaikōura is renowned for its abundance and consistency of wildlife and once on the water we do have a very high success rate of locating dusky dolphins. If for some reason we are not successful in locating dolphins due to situations such as deteriorating weather conditions, you will receive a partial refund. All our tours are subject to a minimum operational cost.

Check out our Refund Guarantee!

Dolphin behaviour depends on their “mood” and as with all wild animals their behaviour can never be predicted or guaranteed. There are times when we have to respect the dolphins by withdrawing swimmers from the water, but may view the dolphins from the boat.

Dusky dolphins can be seen all year round in Kaikoura which have earned it the accolade of being a top location in New Zealand for successful dolphin tours. There is a variation between summer and winter locations for the duskies in that the summer sees them spending more time inshore and the winter months it is more usual to find them a bit further offshore.

In summer the water temperature can reach 18° celsius and in winter it can drop to as low as 8° celsius. In winter we give additional gear including gloves and booties to help keep you warm.

Contact lenses can be worn with masks, but glasses cannot. We have a range of prescription masks (corrective lenses) available for those who are near sighted. The prescriptions range from -2.00 to -8.00.

Yes definitely – it is essential that you make reservations for the option of swimming with the dolphins as we are limited by our Department of Conservation permits to 16 swimmers on each boat per tour, with the balance of seats available for watching. These swim seats fill very quickly especially in the height of tourist season.

We do operate a waiting list for swimming if the tour you are wishing to book is showing as full. Please contact our Customer Service Team on 0800 733 365 or email us to have your name recorded for the waiting list.
