10 Days Experience Uganda’s Exclusive Gorillas and Wildlife ( Private tour)

I had an absolutely amazing trip in Uganda with Mukisa Safaris! I was a solo traveller and Joan, my guide and Solomon, my amazing driver, went above and beyond to make sure it was a trip of a lifetime! I loved the itinerary and all the accommodations Richard chose for me, especially Ride 4 A Woman homestay in Buhoma. I recommend to visit this place and the women working there, even if you're not staying there. The highlight of my trip was of course the gorilla trekking. I can highly recommend Mukisa Safaris, especially if you're looking for a customised trip! I will definitely chose them again for my next trip in Uganda!

The Absolute Safari Tour

The Absolute Safari

The whole trip was amazing! I did their longest tour the Absolute Safari from Kenya to Cape Town. You get really good value for money, better than any of the other overland trucks that we met along the way. The guides and drivers know so much and help out a lot. The itinerary was great, you get to see so much, I wish we could have stayed longer in some places but the tour was pretty long as is so I could see that not being feasible. Would 100% recommend.

14 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking, Big 5 & Big Cats Tour

We decided to book direct with a Ugandan tour operator and were so glad we did. Devine tailored the trip for us to suit our requirements. Our tour guide Emanuel 'Emma' was incredibly passionate about his job and looked after us like we were his own family. We would thoroughly recommend Devine and Emma for a Ugandan safari holiday and to meet the gorillas.

This was a return to Uganda where we worked for two years as volunteers 50 years ago. Bosco provided a modified 11day tour for us to include more time in places we wanted to revisit. He was terrific. Everything worked out better than we could have hoped, from level of accommodation, meals, transportation, itinerary, his extensive knowledge and personality as a guide. He was fun to be with, especially important when in a vehicle for long hours.

4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking, Chimps, Big 5 & Big Cats Safari Tour

4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking, Chimps, Big 5 & Big Cats Safari

Not really knowing what to expect on this adventure, we were happy we chose this itinerary. It was fast pace but with enough time to rest between events. What a unique experience to see the gorillas and chimps in their natural habitat. The trekking guides took great care of us, gave us the information and support we need for a successful trek. We never felt unsafe during our treks. Our Devine African Safari private guide; Emma was fantastic, professional and personable. He made sure we were where we needed to be on time, thought ahead to ensure trip details went accordingly, gave us useful information throughout the trip, and overall was just a pleasure to have guide us. Travel distance from Entebbe to the trekking location is quite far but the scenery is unique and something to behold. Stopping at the Equator for photos and lunch at a local spot was a nice treat. The people of Uganda were very pleasant, calm, and inviting. We would definitely recommend this trip, Devine African Safari, and Emma to future travelers.

10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

I had a great time on the safari. I was on my own and was happy to have a female guide (seems to be one of the few companies that employ women). I liked that I had a separate driver too, so he was able to focus on the roads and not worry about the next reservation or lunch spot. The vehicle was well maintained, and it had a pop top so I could stand when we drove to see the animals. We stayed a variety of lodges -- each one having some unique component -- a stunning view of the plains, a lakeside setting, or my favorite, the Bush Lodge, where you had to be accompanied after dark because of the roaming hippos and elephants. Overall, I felt very well taken care of and thoroughly enjoyed my experience.

This was my first time in Africa & I was totally taken by this beautiful country, the breathtaking scenery & the so friendly, happy people. Every day was a different experience: beautiful Zanzibar beach, various tours, safari's, village, school & orphanage visits, seeing wild animals up close in their natural habitat was amazing, but the highlight has to be ' the mountain gorillas', this is an experience I will never forget. I will def' return to this wonderful country.

Gorilla & wildlife safari tour - Queen Elizabeth & Bwindi tour

I just completed this amazing 4 day trip across major attractions in Uganda. The tour was well organised and the sights exceeded my expectations! Right from the booking process, it was very smooth. I had several questions, and also needed to customise the start and end points based on my overall plan. I got full clarity and support from Anthony with these and could book the tour with the peace of mind that it covers what I wanted. The sights we visited speak for themselves and provide amazing look into the wildlife. The chimp and gorilla tracking are absolutely thrilling experience. They were way better than I could have expected. The accommodations during the tour were greatly located and well maintained. They provided the perfect retreat after the activities of the day. It is a well planned itinerary and packs a lot within 4 days! Loved every moment of the trip and taking back great memories from Uganda! Thank you Friendly Gorilla Safari for the amazing time!

Gorilla Trekking Reviews

We had a fabulous time on this trip. Our guide Arthur was very knowledgeable and friendly. The lodge we stayed it was located in the rain forest, it was lovely. The food was definitely a highlight. The Gorilla trekking was very well organised and really was absolutely amazing! Will be recommending to all!!
It was the most incredible experience in my life! Adili was the best guide ever. Acommodation, transportation, transfers, and the trek in itself were perfect. I really recommend Ubuntu Voyages, It's really worth it!!!
Excellent package compiled by Richard at Mukisa, day to day ran with professionalism and courtesy by Alex and Sam, every little detail attended to. A fantastic country with endless places and people of interest, Uganda has a host of amazing vista's and wildlife, 100% safe to travel through and meet the local people and array of wildlife, Westerners seem to default with Kenya - Uganda is equally as impressive and safe to commute around, the people welcome you everywhere and state security is ever present on the roads and villages. Opportunity to meet the silver backs in their domain is the winner for Uganda over other African alternatives, this trumps the choice for Uganda as a destination.

Why consider a gorilla safari?

A gorilla safari in either Uganda or Rwanda is a great opportunity to interface with the endangered mountain gorillas. Genetically gorillas share 98% of their Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) with humans. The magical hour spent in the presence of these great apes has been described by past travelers as one of the best wildlife experiences. Mountain gorillas do not survive in captivity. Therefore, they cannot be found in any zoo anywhere in the world. Due to this reason, gorilla trekking is now the most popular tourist experience in Uganda, DR Congo and Rwanda attracting thousands of visitors to this part of the world.

Gorilla safaris in Rwanda, Uganda & Congo

gorilla safaris

Our gorilla safaris take place in Rwanda , Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These are the only 3 destinations in the world where you can find the endangered mountain gorillas . There are currently about 1,064 mountain gorillas in these countries living in two separate locations. One group lives in the Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of the 3 countries while the other lives in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. National Parks protecting mountain gorillas within the Virunga Mountains include Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. A gorilla safari to any of the 3 countries gives travellers an opportunity to meet face to face with the endangered mountain gorillas which share 98% of the human DNA. These are the only destinations in the world where these rare great apes can be found and thousands of travellers flock here to trek gorillas, for a lifetime experience.

Comparing gorilla safaris in Rwanda, Uganda & DR Congo

The gorilla trekking experience is almost the same in all the 3 countries though there are several factors that make the encounter in each country unique. In terms of the cost, Rwanda is the most pricy of all the 3 countries. The gorilla permit which allows visitors to enter the gorilla park is sold at $1,500 per person in Rwanda. The same is sold at $700 per person in Uganda for foreign non residents, $600 for foreign residents and Uganda Shillings 250,000 to East African residents whereas in DR Congo it is sold at $450 per person. In terms of distance, it only takes about 3 hours to drive from Kigali International Airport to Volcanoes National park in the northwest of the country. This is not the case with Uganda where it takes about 10 hours to drive from Entebbe International Airport to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwest. For DR Congo, it’s a 4 hours drive from Kigali International Airport to the eastern town of Goma; and a 2 hours drive from Goma to Virunga National Park due to the bumpy nature of the road.

Rwanda’s high standard accommodation facilities  make her a high end destination. Both Rwanda and Uganda are relatively peaceful in terms of security while the situation is a bit fragile in DR Congo due to rebel activities in the eastern part of the country.

Best season for gorilla safaris

The dry season between June to September and December to February is the best time to trek mountain gorillas. Gorillas live at high altitudes in montane rainforests which can be very difficult to trek in rain season due to unfavorable conditions in the parks. Gorillas also tend to roam freely in their habitat in the dry season which makes them easy to find unlike in the wet season when they confine themselves at one place. Some roads leading to gorilla habitats still have marram and they turn muddy in the rain season making it very hard to navigate.

Gorilla permits

A gorilla permit or gorilla pass is the primary requirement for trekking the endangered mountain gorillas in any of the 3 countries. Gorilla permits can be bought online through a trusted tour agent or directly from the issuing authority. It is highly advisable that those intending to trek gorillas book their gorilla permits at least 6 months in advance because of their limited availability. The number of trekkers visiting gorillas per day is limited in order to limited to 8 trackers per gorilla gorilla group.  The price of a gorilla permit is different in all the 3 countries. Gorilla habituation

Gorilla habituation is very instrumental in facilitating gorilla tourism. Gorilla trekking wouldn’t be possible without the habituation process. In this case, wild gorilla groups are tracked by rangers for a period of time in order to make them get used to the presence of humans. After succeeding in influencing their behavior, these groups are officially open to tourism. The gorilla habituation has been very successful in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where over 20 groups have so far been habituated. The Bwindi Impenetrable Park is the only destination where the experience is carried out.  The habituation process lasts for 4 hours per day and those who want to take part in it are charged $1,500 per person. Gorilla groups/families

gorilla safaris

Naturally gorillas live in social groups which are referred to as gorilla families . It is worthy noting that gorillas share 98% of the human DNA and therefore it is not surprising to learn that they posses some of the human traits like living in families. Gorilla groups differ in size with some having as many many as 25 members while others with as few as 2 members. Generally, an average gorilla family has got about 15 members. Just like humans, a gorilla family is led by an alpha male known as a silverback who represents a father figure in the family. The other members in the gorilla family include several females with their young ones as well as a few juveniles. Male gorillas reach maturity at an average age of about 12 years and at this stage, they tend to move away from the family and strive to form their own group. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda has got the highest number of gorillas as well as the habituated gorilla groups. Read more ..

Gorilla trekking rules/guidelines

Mountain gorillas being endangered species, their protection is always prioritised to ensure that they continue to thrive in their natural habitat. In order to achieve this, authorities came up with a few rules to guide trekkers on how to go about the gorilla trekking exercise while not affecting the wellbeing of the animals. These include among others, limiting the number of trekkers visiting gorillas per day, restricting time spent in their presence, etc. Read more..

Mountain gorilla habitats/parks

gorilla safaris

Mountain gorillas live in 4 different habitats/parks of which 3 are located within the Virunga Mountains straddling the borders of DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. These include Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The other gorilla habitat is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. Each habitat is very crucial to the survival and existence of the gorillas though they may differ in terms of size, vegetation, altitude and the number of animals protected. Bwindi has got the highest number of mountain gorillas (about 450), followed by Volcanoes (about 350), Virunga has about 250 while Mgahinga is just visited occasionally by a few gorillas crossing from Rwanda. In terms of accessibility, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is the most easy to get to with the shortest driving distance of about 2-3 hours from the capital Kigali, Bwindi and Mgahinga  can also easily be accessed from Kigali rather than from Kampala. Virunga in Congo can be accessed by air from Kigali International Airport to Goma and then a drive to the park. Read more …

Packing list for gorilla trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is a unique experience that takes place in montane rainforests of east and central Africa. Due to the nature of the terrain, weather conditions and the vegetation in the gorilla trekking destinations, travellers are required to pack specific items for facilitation. Some of the most crucial items on the gorilla trekking gear list include rain jacket, hiking boots, gloves, among others. Read more ..

Rwanda gorilla safaris

gorilla safaris

Volcanoes national park in northwest Rwanda is the single destination for gorilla safaris in the country. The park is park is part of the greater Virunga Massif which also extends into DR Congo and Uganda, known for protecting the endangered mountain gorillas. There are 12 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes national park that are visited by travellers every day. The total number of mountain gorillas in the park is estimated to be about 350 animals. Some of the gorilla families that are regularly visited in Rwanda include Susa, Amahoro, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Hirwa, Kwitonda, among others. According to the gorilla trekking guidelines in Rwanda, each gorilla family is visited once per day by a group of 8 trekkers. Visitors are allowed to spend one hour in the presence of gorillas. Rwanda’s gorilla permit is sold at $1,500 per person and can be bought online via a trusted local tour agent . Rwanda is arguably the most ideal destination for gorilla trekking safaris given the convenience in accessing the gorilla park and the country’s developed infrastructure in terms of accommodation facilities and transport network. Gorilla safaris in Uganda

gorilla safaris

Uganda is one of the leading destinations as far as gorilla safaris are concerned. Bwindi Impenetrable National park in the southwest protects the highest number of mountain gorillas in the world. The park now has over 20 habituated gorilla families that are available to be visited every day. There are four gorilla trekking sectors within Bwindi Impenetrable national park, namely; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Gorilla permits are allocated for each sector and trekkers are required to visit gorillas in the corresponding sector attached to their permit. The impressive number of mountain gorillas  in Bwindi gives trekkers almost 100% chance of meeting their allocated gorilla family in the park. Some of the most common gorilla families that are regularly visited by trekkers in Bwindi include Rushegura, Mubare, Bitukura, Habinyanja, Kyaguriro, Oruzongo, Nshongi, Mishaya, Nkuringo, among others. Uganda’s gorilla permit is sold at $700 per person for foreign nonresidents, $600 for foreign residents in East Africa and Uganda Shillings 250,000 for East African residents. Travellers planning to trek gorillas in Uganda are encouraged to book their gorilla permits online at leat 6 months in advance due to their limited availability. Read more..

Gorilla safaris in Congo

Although DR Congo may be less popular for gorilla safaris compared to Uganda and Rwanda due to the insecurity in the areas around gorilla habitats, gorilla tours here are more diverse and intriguingly rewarding. In addition to mountain gorillas in Virunga national park, visitors to DR Congo can also see another subspecies of the gorilla, the Grauer’s gorilla or the eastern lowland gorilla in Kahuzi-Biega national park . After watching the mountain gorillas in either Uganda or Rwanda, curious travellers may decide to proceed and see the eastern lowland gorillas in Congo to maximise their primate experience in the region.

gorilla safaris

Given the presence of these two different gorilla subspecies in Congo in close proximity, Congo is arguably the best destination for gorilla trekking experience. This is in addition to the friendly and affordable gorilla permit price which is the cheapest compared to Uganda and Rwanda at $400 per person. Currently there are 8 habituated gorilla groups in Virunga national park that can be visited by trekkers. These include Munyaga, Mapuwa Rugendo, Nyakamwe Lulengo, Bageni, Humba, and Kabirizi. Kahuzi-Biega national park has got 9 groups of eastern lowland gorillas although 5 of these are habituated for tourism. These include Mpungwe gorilla family, Chimanuka, Bonnani, Mugahuka, and Nganwa.

As a precaution to safeguard tourists, the gorilla parks in Congo are always closed to tourism during periods of intense conflicts in the region. Park authorities also ensure that a good number of rangers is deployed in the parks to safeguard the animals. Travellers who wish to trek gorillas in Congo are encouraged to first enquire about the security situation in the area and whether the parks are open for tourism. Read more..

GORILLA TOURS IN UGANDA OR RWANDA? FIND WHICH COUNTRY OFFERS THE BEST GORILLA SAFARI IN AFRICA

There are about 720 mountain gorillas remaining in the whole world Africa and half of these live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda . For that reason, its important to choose Uganda. Compare Uganda and Rwanda in detail.

THE GORILLA SAFARI EXPERIENCE, WHAT TO EXPECT.

It takes the whole day to drive from the capital Kampala to the distant Bwindi National Park , having a stopover at the equator. Basing on the group that your permit is allocated to, you will go to one of 4 areas on the outskirts of the national park that include: Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo, or Ruhija. We reached in Nkuringo on the southwestern border of the park. There you will spend the night, and then the following morning you will set out for gorilla watching! by dawn you are awake and then start on the journey to the park, reaching at the outpost by 7:45am. A quick briefing and then set out drove deep into this Ugandan gorilla tours sanctuary , where we will be orientated and provided with a number of rules include on that says that gorillas may approach you however you can’t approach the mountain gorillas . (Do not touch wild animals!) Following the orientation, along with the park rangers you will begin gorilla trek in the jungle. Gorilla Tours may take anything between an hour to five hours and this will depend on the movement of these gorillas. They are pretty mobile animals which continuously move about. As soon as the rangers find the gorillas, you will be them for one hour as you observe them, interacting with each other before you return to your hotel. (in case you opt for a longer tour, you can decide to trek another gorilla group the following day)

I cannot explain in words how fascinating it is to stand only inches from these amazing creatures. The Uganda gorillas, particularly the silverbacks, are unbelievably strong and can easily injure a person in just seconds. However, they didn’t fear us; they would walk right up to us in case you were in their way. (Tip: always move out of their way!)

WHAT FITNESS LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

Different families require different times, some gorilla families are easier to take, if you are not very fit, or facing old age, the Rushegura Gorilla family is the one you must insist on with your tour operator or safari company. For most of the families, you may need to workout before you can take a more challenging family trek. But this should not worry you, its not mountaineering ! At the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point you shall receive free, walking poles or sticks. Our safari guide will give you enough water to help you during your Gorilla tours.

WHAT TO EAT DURING THE GORILLA TREK?

As you have an early heavy breakfast before your trek, the lodge or accommodation will provide you with packed lunch, usually light snacks. They should be enough for your trip up the Bwindi forest.

bwindi forest national park

CHARITY AFTER GORILLA SEEING?

Its always good to give charity to orphans, there are various NGOs and CBOs in Bwindi area that are more than happy to receive aid in any form, from clothes to money, sponsorship, voluntary health treatment, building and construction and so much more. Please contact us for more information about volunteering after your gorilla watching experience. In Rwanda you can include Dian Fossey Trek after visiting the mountain gorillas.

GORILLA TOURS WITH KIDS?

Children below 15 years are not allowed on a gorilla safaris. Some tour operators will convince you that they can forge a way of letting your child in as long as he looks huge and physical enough. Do not be deceived into this since UWA will consider the passport which indicates the birth date of the Child.

CLOTHING AND WHAT TO WEAR?

This is one of the most frequent asked questions. Your list of Gorilla hiking gear should have trekking boots or shoes that can handle slippery mud, because it rains every now and then in the forest. You need a rain jacket, long sleeved shirt and gloves.

About the Mountain Gorillas

gorilla tour

Mountain gorillas are wild! In order to make them habituated,

Researchers and primatologists work together for five years to prepare a mountain gorilla family for the tourist industry during the Habituation phase. Gorillas in their natural habitat gradually adjust to human presence throughout this time. Tourists who have booked this adventure are escorted deep into the tropical by by rangers and guides or trackers to spend one to four hours a day with the habituated gorilla family. Visitors to gorilla families are limited to eight individuals per day in an effort reduce stress on the gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Rwanda

At Insight Safari Holidays, we help you purchase your gorilla permit hustle free. In addition, we offer safari packages ranging from 3 day gorilla treks to several days. Its important to book your permit in advance so as to avoid missing out especially during the peak season.

Gorilla Conservation

The Endangered Mountain Gorillas have attracted a lot of attention during the past years with quite a number of international and local organisations to help protect and conserve these apes. By visiting these gorillas, you directly contribute to the conservation efforts.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

About half of the world’s mountain gorillas live in Uganda, making gorilla trekking there one of the most amazing wildlife experiences in Africa.

It is possible to spend up to an hour with gorillas on a standard gorilla hike in their native habitat. Gently introducing gorillas to humans, a procedure that takes between two and five years, has made this possible. Achieving this goal is critical to the ongoing study, treatment, and protection of gorillas.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest’s rangers and conservationists are looking for volunteers who want to get more involved in the protection and understanding of these gentle giants. Habituation treks allow you to spend up to four amazing hours with these incredibly intelligent and emotional animals.

It’s a profoundly moving experience, and it’s essential to the gorillas’ survival that visitors become accustomed to it.

Other African Safari Activities Alongside Gorilla Tours

Golden monkey tracking.

The Virunga Volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are home to the Golden Monkey, a beautiful and rare monkey. In Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in the southwest of the country, visitors can go on a hike with a golden monkey.

Due to its location in the mountains and the fact that the monkeys are always moving, Golden monkey trekking is a more energetic excursion than Chimpanzee or gorilla trekking in some circumstances. This preference is because they enjoy eating bamboo shoots that are still green and tender.

Chimpanzee Tracking

Over 120 habituated chimps and 1400 in the jungle live in Kibale National Park, the world’s primate capital. About 95 percent of the time, you’ll find chimpanzees when trekking. Chimpanzee trekking is available twice a day, with the morning session beginning at 7 a.m. and the afternoon session beginning at 12 p.m., with as many as six groups of six individuals each day. Primates in the forest include the black & white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus monkeys, and baboons, among other species.

More than 300 chimpanzees live in the Kalinzu forest, which is home to roughly 40 of them. In addition to chimpanzee trekking, roughly 60% of trekkers see chimpanzees while out in the wild. While on this chimpanzee trekking safari, take in the stunning surroundings and gurgling streams. This is a strenuous hike that necessitates a high degree of physical fitness.

Chimp hiking in the Budongo forest in the Kaniyo Pabidi region of Murchison Falls National Park is a pleasant adventure. ‘ Chimpanzees are the most populous in the jungle, but just a handful are used to tourists. In contrast to Kibale, where permits must be reserved in advance, you can notify park authorities in Kaniyo Pabidi the day before your monkey hike.

Wildlife Safaris

There is a lot to see and do in Uganda when it comes to wildlife. On a Uganda wildlife tour, you’ll be able to see more than just the big five. In Uganda’s ten national parks and game reserves, you may see all of this spectacular species up close. There are lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, rhinos, and many more animals to see on these safaris.

Wild animal populations have grown and extinct ones like the white rhino have been brought back to life by the efforts of wildlife authorities. Wildlife safaris to these top destinations are available through Steadfast safaris. There are safaris for lone travelers, couples, families, and large groups. Safaris to the most popular safari locations are available at a range of price points.

– Jackie Nantume

Born and raised in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda – Pearl of Africa. I initially earned a Bachelor’s degree in Travel and Tourism Management at Makerere University Business School, but have found my way into ecotourism now. I joined Nature Adventure Africa Safaris, Ltd as “Content Writer” in June 2014 and later became a full time employee (Tour Consultant) in November 2014.

I have no regrets about working in the ecotourism sector as I find it exciting and I get to learn new things every day. Traveling is one of the many things I have come to enjoy while working here, it being one of my favorite hobbies. Uganda is truly one of the undiscovered wonders of the world!

From the flora to fauna, from beautiful sights to wonderful people, everything here is simply amazing. I work with a knowledgeable and great team who inspire me to be better each and every day. If interested in learning more, drop me an email and see for yourself!

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Bwindi forest is the only place in Africa where one can have a Gorilla Habituation Experience . There isn’t a specific definition of Gorilla Habituation Experience. However, it can literally be explained as a process of training wild Mountain Gorillas to get used to the presence of human beings.

The process involves a team of individuals like trackers, researchers, conservationists, and rangers who take 2-3 years to have a group of Mountain Gorillas fully habituated. During the process, the team visits these wild Gorillas each day and each individual Gorilla is given a name.  After the wild Gorilla Habituation process, the group is put through a mock exercise where a few people visit the Gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking From Kigali

Mountain Trekking Gorillas in Uganda is done in the two national parks of Bwindi and Mgahinga both situated southwest of the country. These are both at the border with Rwanda. It’s just about 4 hour drive from Kigali-Rwanda to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and just 3 hours to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park .

This is a shorter distance than that of Kampala-Uganda’s capital to Bwindi or Mgahinga which is about an 8–9 hours road drive. If you do not want to spend a whole day on a road drive and another to return, then starting and ending your trip from Kigali is a perfect option. Fortunately, Kigali International Airport has daily international flights, and therefore easy to have a short gorilla safari to Uganda from Kigali.

Tourists trek Ugandan Gorillas via Rwanda because the permit in Uganda is cheaper and the parks are nearer to an International Airport.  For cheaper and short Gorilla tours in Uganda , start and end your trip in Kigali. Here are sample packages that you can choose from. You can also choose to have your holiday booked just like you want it through our contact form .

The distinctions between the two can be identified in their body structure, hair and lifestyle. Mountain gorillas love swinging on the tree branches where the eastern lowland gorillas reside on the ground most of the time. Today, there are over 1000 mountain gorillas habituated in the Virunga conservation area. They are very shy and gentle, yet can be aggressive once offended. Gorillas live a social life, abound which is created for childhood which is for about 1-12 years. Any opportunity to reinstate the hierarchy never ends. The family is led by the dominant silverback, assisted by other silverbacks, females, black backs, and young adults. They are mainly vegetarians, though mixed with ants occasionally. The dominant silverback ensures discipline, order, and security; they are well adapted to the world they live, though many newborns rarely survive. Rwanda – “the land of a thousand hills” – offers a new aspect to Africa and a different holiday experience from that of other East African countries. With its stunning landscape including dramatic volcanoes, thick rainforest and vast lakes, Rwanda Gorilla Holidays ensure that travellers have a truly unforgettable time.

As a small Central African nation situated to the west of Tanzania, Rwanda is a western arm of the Great Rift Valley and on the watershed between the Nile and the Congo – Africa’s two largest rivers. Its physical beauty is unique on the African Continent with vibrant green grasslands, dazzling riverine forests and breathtaking mountain views.

Rwanda is a must-see for anyone looking for an exhilarating safari adventure. A highlight of any Rwanda holiday is a gorilla safari through the rainforest to track and observe the endangered Mountain Gorillas that inhabit the Parc National des Volcans. Mountain Gorillas are on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species and are classified as ‘critically endangered with just 790 individuals currently recorded. There are no Mountain Gorillas living outside of their native mountain forest home or in captivity. The Parc National des Volcans is home to many family groups of this incredible species and expert guides lead tours to see them at close range in their natural habitat.

Akagera National Park is located in the east of Rwanda bordering Tanzania. It covers over 2500 square kilometres of savannah and is home to a wide variety of animals and birdlife.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s last remaining high-altitude rainforests, and one of the largest of these ancient areas. This beautiful mountainous terrain harbours many primates including chimpanzees and is Rwanda’s most important site for bird watching.

Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and is the deepest freshwater lake in the world. Surrounded by the Rift Valley and Virunga mountains it has picturesque sandy shores and provides a beautiful setting in which to relax after a gorilla trek.

Gorilla trekking in uganda and rwanda.

Uganda remains the leading gorilla trekking destination in the world. This is simply because there are about 600 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone and 14 habituated gorilla trekking families in the entire country. However, each mountain gorilla family can only be tracked by a maximum of 8 people per day which makes the activity quite on high demand for Kenya safari holidays.

gorilla safari holidays

In Rwanda, there are only 10 habituated mountain gorilla families but it never disappoints while on your gorilla trekking safari. In fact, this Rwanda – Kenya gorilla safari would involve a lot of hiking and sight-seeing as well.

Securing a gorilla trekking permit with Rwanda for your safari holidays is no hustle but it would cost you about USD $15,000. You would also need to have a clean bill of health to prevent any transmission of diseases like flu to the gorillas. Tourists should also note that persons below 15 years cannot trek mountain gorillas for their own safety and the safety of others. To make this experience count, you can further undertake a Mount Kilimanjaro Trek or a Ngorongoro Crater Safari Tour .

How long does a typical gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi last?

The duration of a gorilla trek in Bwindi can vary, but on average, the actual time spent with the gorillas is approximately one hour. The entire trek, including hiking to and from the gorilla group, can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family.

What permits are required for gorilla trekking in Bwindi, Uganda?

A gorilla trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority is required for each visitor planning a Kenya Gorilla safari . Permits are limited and must be booked in advance. It’s advisable to secure permits well ahead of your planned trekking date.

How close do you get to the gorillas during trekking in Bwindi?

While regulations require maintaining a distance of 7 meters from the gorillas, they often come very close out of curiosity. The proximity can provide an intimate and unforgettable wildlife experience for gorilla trekking safari in Uganda and Kenya.

Are vaccinations required for a Kenya safari and gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Kenya, and it’s recommended for Uganda as well. Additionally, consult with healthcare professionals for advice on other vaccinations and health precautions.

Can I customize my Kenya and Uganda safari itinerary?

Yes, many tour operators offer customizable itineraries to suit your preferences. Whether you want to focus on specific wildlife experiences, cultural encounters, or a particular region, tailor-made options are often available when choosing on embarking on a Kenya Gorilla Trekking safari.

What is the age limit for trekking gorillas?

Only persons fifteen years and older are allowed to trek the endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. This rule is mainly to protect the individuals and other tourists in the group as well. Although mountain gorillas are gentle, they still are in fact giants and children might feel intimidated by their size and thus run or scream putting their lives and those of their Kenya gorilla trekking safari group mates in danger.

What is the cost of a Uganda Gorilla trekking permit?

In Uganda, mountain gorillas can only be trekked in two parks; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park situated in south-western region and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park also found in the south-Western region.

As of the year 2021, the price of a gorilla trekking permit has been set to 700 dollars per person for foreign non-residents, 600 dollars per person for foreign residents living in Uganda, and 250,000 Uganda shillings per person for Ugandans and other people from the East African community. The activity has a minimum age of 15 years old to be undertaken.

What entails in a gorilla habituation experience?

Mountain gorilla habituation is simply the process that mountain gorillas go through before they are ready for trekking. The process takes years (about 2 -3) as the wild gorillas are observed by humans to get them accustomed to human presence. Once these gorillas are habituated, they are upgraded to gorilla trekking status where tourists can come and observe them too.

Mountain gorilla habituation permits are often more expensive than the gorilla trekking permits since you get to spend the entire day in the wild, learning and observing the gorillas in the company of researchers and game rangers. Therefore; while planning for your Kenya – Uganda safari holidays , you can always add mountain gorilla habituation for a unique and extra ordinary safari.

What should I know before going on a safari holiday to Kenya?

Planning safari holidays to Kenya can be quite easy and fulfilling with Travelmonke, but there are some points to note for first time visitors to ensure a fruitful safari holidays adventure. Always ensure that you have all necessary documentation including Visas and vaccination certificates. Also, ensure to make some research about the policies, rules and regulations of the country you are visiting for your Kenya safari

In addition, while planning your Kenya safari family holidays, always remember to carry any personal items like medications, personal effects and clothing. Since Kenya is a tropical country, a mixture of warm and light but dull colored clothing is necessary. In case of any dietary requirements, tourists are encouraged to make them known to Travelmonke for a better safari in Kenya experience.

How many days should I spend on Kenya Gorilla safari?

The length of your safari to Kenya depends on your budget and how many things you want to get done. When planning a safari to Kenya, it is recommended to consult with Travelmonke to come up with the best safari package encompassing all the places you want to see. Kenya Safari can last from two to twelve days or more; in case you wish for an all round East African safari tour .

What is the best month to go on a your Kenya safari?

Africa has fair weather in that we do not experience winter or extremely harsh weather conditions. However, seasons can greatly affect your Kenya gorilla safari adventure if one travels within the inappropriate time. The dry season is often from Mid December to February and June – mid August. Temperatures are often hot around this time so remember to carry light clothes for the safari holidays in Kenya.

For every Kenya safari holidays activity, there is an optimum time for it. For example; game viewing is often best done during the dry season as animals are concentrated around water sources while birding is best done in April when birds are in their nests breeding. Also, during the festive month of December, Kenya gorilla trekking adventures are often on high demand and the prices are higher than during the rest of the year or add a Serengeti National Park Trip to your travel plan.

Is it safe to travel to Kenya and Uganda for safari activities?

Both Kenya and Uganda are popular and safe safari destinations when travel is conducted with reputable tour operators. It’s essential to follow safety guidelines, stay informed about local conditions, and adhere to the advice of guides for a secure and enjoyable experience.

What is the accommodation like on a Kenya safari?

While on your safari holidays to Kenya, you need not worry about finding a place to stay. Accommodation on Kenya gorilla safari ranges from luxury hotels and resorts to mid range lodges and budget campsites. Some facilities offer all luxury, mid range and budget accommodations so that you can still stay at the lodge, hotel or resort of your choice while still maintaining your budget limit.

Whether travelling on luxury, midrange or budget planning, with Travemonke, you can always find a place to stay. For a luxury safari, one can stay at AA lodge Amboseli and Olarro plains among others. For luxury accommodations, options like Governor’s camp, Olarro lodge and Tortilis camp can come in handy.
