How to Get Missing Apps Back on Your iPhone
Find missing apps like Safari, FaceTime, Camera, and App Store
- Ithaca College
- Switching from Android
What to Know
- If you can't find the app using the iPhone Spotlight search tool , go to the Settings app to see if Restrictions are enabled.
- Go to the Apple Store to reinstall iPhone apps that you've purchased or preloaded apps that you may have deleted.
- If your phone is jailbroken, you might need to restore your iPhone to factory settings to get back your missing apps.
This article explains how to get apps back on an iPhone when they've gone missing. Instructions apply to all iOS devices.
How to Search for Missing Apps
Not all apps that appear to be missing are actually hidden or gone. Make sure that the apps are truly missing, and not simply moved to another screen or in a folder . After upgrades to iOS, apps are sometimes moved to new folders. If you recently upgraded your operating system, try searching for the app you're looking for using the built-in Spotlight search tool .
If Spotlight doesn't turn up the app you're looking for, check to see if Restrictions are enabled in the Settings app. How you turn them off depends on what version of the iOS you're running.
How to Get Deleted Apps Back
Your apps could also be missing because they've been deleted. As of iOS 10 , Apple allows you to delete some pre-installed apps (though technically those apps are just hidden, not deleted). Earlier versions of the iOS didn't allow this.
You get these deleted apps back by reinstalling them. To learn how to reinstall built-in apps that have been deleted, read How to Download Apps You've Already Purchased .
Getting Apps Back After Jailbreaking
If you've jailbroken your phone , it's possible that you have truly deleted some of your phone's built-in apps. If that's the case, you'll need to restore your phone to factory settings in order to get those apps back. This removes the jailbreak, but it's the only way to get those apps back.
Why Do iPhone Apps Go Missing?
Every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch comes pre-loaded with a ton of useful apps from Apple, but sometimes those apps can go missing. If that happens, you may wonder where they went, why they disappeared, and how to get them back.
The apps that this can happen to include the App Store app, the Safari web browser, the iTunes Store app, Camera , FaceTime , and many others. There are a number of possible reasons why an app has disappeared. It could have been moved or deleted. That's obvious. Less obvious is that "missing" apps may still be on your device but have been hidden using iOS's Restrictions feature.
All About the iPhone Restrictions Feature
The iPhone Restrictions feature built into iOS allows users to turn off certain pre-installed apps and features. Besides blocking apps, Restrictions can be used to disable or block changes to a lot of functions and features of the iOS — including Privacy settings, changing email accounts, Location Services, Game Center, and more.
Most importantly for this article, though, when Restrictions are in use, apps can be disabled and hidden — at least until Restrictions are turned off. If enabled, Restrictions can be used to hide the following apps:
Why Restrictions Might Be Used to Hide Apps
As mentioned earlier, there are two groups of people who will generally use Restrictions to hide apps: parents and IT administrators.
Parents use Restrictions to prevent their children from accessing apps, settings, or content that they don't want them to. This can be to prevent them from accessing mature content or from exposing themselves to online predators via social networking or photo sharing.
On the other hand, if you get your iOS device through your employer, apps may be missing thanks to settings instituted by your company's IT administrators. They may be in place due to corporate policies about the kind of content you can access on your device or for security reasons.
How to Disable iOS Restrictions on iOS 12 and Up
If you're running iOS 12 or newer, follow these steps:
- Tap Settings .
- Tap Screen Time .
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions .
- If Restrictions are already turned on, you'll be asked to enter the passcode. This is where it gets hard. If you're a kid or a corporate employee, you may not know the passcode your parents or IT administrators used (which is the point, of course). If you don't know it, you're basically out of luck. Sorry. If you do know it, though, enter it.
- If you can access the Restrictions settings, you can enable some apps while leaving others hidden, by moving the slider next to the app you want to use to on/green .
- Move the Content & Privacy Restrictions slider to off/white to enable all apps and turn Restrictions off entirely.
How to Disable iOS Restrictions on iOS 11 and Lower
The Restrictions settings are in a different place in iOS 11 and lower:
- Tap General .
- Tap Restrictions .
- The same issue with the Restrictions passcode as described in the last section applies here. If you know the passcode, enter it and choose which apps to enable.
- Tap Disable Restrictions to enable all apps and turn Restrictions off entirely.
To hide apps on an iPhone , open the App Store app and tap your profile icon . Go to your Account screen and tap Purchased to see a listing of the apps you’ve downloaded on your device. Tap All to see all your apps. Locate the app you want to hide, swipe left, and tap Hide .
To unhide apps on an iPhone , navigate to your App Library via the iPhone’s home screen by swiping right until you reach it. Tap the search bar to view apps alphabetically. Tap and hold the app you want to unhide, and then slide to the left to move it to your home screen and unhide it.
To delete hidden apps on an iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and view all your apps in order of memory size. Find the hidden app you want to delete, tap it, and tap Delete App .

How To Fix A Missing Safari Icon On iPhone Or iPad
Safari is built into iOS and cannot be removed from your iPhone or iPad (except when the device has been jailbroken), but it can go missing from the home screen. If it does, it's often easy enough to locate it.
You can usually find it with the Spotlight — swipe down on the home screen and search "safari." Sometimes a user will tuck Safari into a cluttered folder where the icon can get lost. To find it, you just have to look for it.
Suppose you always launch the app from the App Library, and the Safari icon is missing. In that case, it's possible the browser was accidentally deleted from the App Library — a space where all apps are auto-organized into tidy folders. You can hide an app from the Home Screen when it's being moved to the App Library. When it's also deleted from the Library, the icon can go missing.
But what's more likely is that the restriction features in iOS are hiding Safari from you. Parental controls or Screen Time management can hide Safari from view, according to Apple .
How to bring the missing Safari icon back
Before reconfiguring the restriction features on your iPhone or iPad, try resetting the Home Screen. The Safari icon may be hidden, not the app itself. Here's what Apple recommends.
- Open Settings.
- Find and tap General.
- Select Transfer or Reset iPhone .
- Select Reset.
- Select Reset Home Screen Layout.
- Select Reset Home Screen.
Resetting the Home Screen sends all app icons back to their original slots.
If you still can't see Safari, Screen Time is hiding the app from you. Screen Time is a feature that limits how much time you're allowed on a particular app. It's protected with a PIN (that's supposed to be different from the password that unlocks your iPhone or iPad).
You can either disable Screen Time entirely, or just safelist Safari.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Enter your passcode.
- Tap Allowed Apps.
- Enable the switch next to Safari to allow it.
To disable the feature entirely, you can also toggle off the switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Safari Disappeared from iPhone Home Screen
When Safari Icon disappears from the Home screen on iPhone, most users start thinking about the possibility of the Safari App being accidentally deleted by them or by someone with access to their device.
However, this is never the case as Apple prevents users from deleting essential Apps and Safari happens to be one of the most essential native Apps that cannot be deleted from an Apple device.
In most cases, the problem of Missing Safari Icon ends up being due to the Safari App being accidentally moved to one of the Home Screens or being hidden in a Folder on the App Library screen.
A less common reason for Safari Icon missing or disappearing from the Home screen on iPhone or iPad is due to the Safari App being restricted by Screen Time Settings.

1. Swipe Left on the Home screen of your iPhone, until you reach the App Library screen.
2. On App Library screen, type Safari in the Search bar and you should find Safari appearing in the Search results.
3. Once Safari appears in the search results, tap and hold on Safari Icon and select Add to Home Screen option.
This should immediately bring the Safari Icon back on the Home Screen of your device.
4. Unhide Home Screen
Another possibility is that you may have accidentally moved Safari to another Home screen and also hidden that Home Screen.
1. Tap & Hold on the Dots located on the Home Screen of your iPhone.
2. Look for Safari Icon in the Thumbnails and tap below the Thumbnail that contains the Safari Icon (if it does not have the check mark).
3. This will unhide the Screen containing Safari Icon and you will find Safari back on the Home screen of your iPhone.
5. Reset Home Screen
An easy way to get native Apps like Safari back to their default position on the Home screen of iPhone or iPad is to Reset the Home Screen.

1. Open Settings > Go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps .
2. On Allowed Apps screen, move the toggle next to Safari to ON position.

Disappearing Safari Tabs on iPhone or iPad? How to Find Them
Every so often, a seemingly small bug in Apple's operating systems survives the company's annual OS launches and continues to cause users huge frustration from one software update to the next.
While there isn't an accepted solution to the problem of disappearing tabs, there are cases where it might seem that your tabs are gone, when in fact they are just hidden from view. Here are some ways that you may be able to get them back or stop them from disappearing in the first place.
Reveal Hidden Tabs
On iPadOS, for example, if you press and hold the Show Tab Overview button (four squares in a quadrant) in the top-right corner of the Safari window, this will reveal a dropdown menu that includes an option to Merge All Windows .
Reveal the Shelf
Another action worth trying on iPadOS is pressing and holding the Safari icon in the Dock or on the Home Screen and selecting Show All Windows from the popup menu that appears.
Recently Closed Tabs
If you have an inkling that some of the tabs you're missing have been inadvertently closed, you can always use the Recently Closed Tabs option to re-open them. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the "+" icon to get a look at all of the tabs that you've recently closed.
Turn Off Auto-Close Tabs
If you still haven't been able to find some of your tabs, make sure that Safari isn't closing them after a certain duration on your behalf: Open Settings , tap through to Safari -> Close Tabs and ensure that Manually is selected.
Bookmark All Open Tabs
If the above suggestions haven't worked for you, there is a workaround: Consider bookmarking your open tabs after each browsing session. This might sound like more hassle than it's worth, but since iOS 13 Apple has included a one-tap option to just that.
A popup menu will appear at the on the screen from which you can select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , the X being the number of tabs open.
Once you've tapped this option, you'll be asked to save the tabs in a new bookmarks folder (remember to give it a recognizable name). Alternately, you can choose a location from the existing folder list in which to save the tabs.
To access your bookmarks in Safari at any time, simply tap the Bookmarks icon in the main browsing interface or the sidebar to reveal all of your saved favorites and folders. Press and hold on the folder of bookmarks and select Open in New Tabs , or alternatively, Open in Tab Group if you want them grouped.

Solving the Mystery of the Missing Safari Icon on Your iPhone
If you've found yourself asking, “Where is my Safari icon?” then you are not alone. Many iPhone and iPad users have had this issue, where the Safari icon has seemingly disappeared from their home screen. There are a few possible explanations for this issue, and thankfully there are easy solutions as well.
First, it's possible that the Safari icon has been moved to another folder or hidden home screen. To see if this is the case, flick your finger left or right to switch between Home screens and see if you can find it. If it's in a folder, it will display the folder name on the right side of the app name after you tap on the app when it appears in search results.
Another possibility is that Safari might be turned off in Screen Time restrictions. To check this, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure Safari is toggled on.
If none of these solutions work, you can try resetting your Home screen layout by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout. This will restore your Home screen layout to factory settings – but be aware that all your apps will also be returned to their original locations as well!
As a last resort, you can use Spotlight Search by swiping down from the middle of any home screen and typing “Safari” into the search field at the top of the screen. This should bring up any hidden folders containing the Safari icon so that you can quickly add it back to your home screen again.
Hopefully one of these solutions helps resolve any issues with your missing Safari icon!
Safari Icon Disappearance
It is possible that your Safari icon has disappeared due to a few different reasons. First, it might have been moved into a folder on your home screen, or you may have accidentally deleted it. Another possibility is that Safari may have been disabled in the Screen Time restrictions of your device. Lastly, if you've recently updated your device, the Safari icon may be located on a hidden home screen. To access this home screen, simply swipe left until you find the icon.
What to Do When Safari App Disappears
If your Safari app has gone missing from your iPhone or iPad, there are a few steps you can take to get it back. First, check all of the folders and other screens on your device by flicking your finger left or right to switch between Home screens. You may have accidentally moved it to another screen.
If that doesn't work, try searching for the Safari app using the search bar at the top of your screen.
Next, check if there are any restrictions on your device that may be preventing you from accessing the Safari app by going into Settings > General > Restrictions and making sure that Safari is allowed.
If none of those options worked, you can try resetting your Home Screen by going into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout and this will reset all of the app icons back to their default positions.
If all else fails, you can reinstall the Safari app through the App Store – just open up the App Store, search for ‘Safari' and tap ‘Get' to download it again.
Location of Safari Icon on iPhone
The Safari icon is usually located on the home screen of your iPhone. Swipe down from the middle of any home screen and type ‘Safari' into the search field at the top of the screen. If it is in a folder, you will see the folder on the right of the app name after you tap on it when it appears in the search results. If it can't be found in either place, you can check your App Library by swiping to the leftmost page on your home screen.
Restoring Safari Homepage
To get your Safari homepage back, open the Safari app on your Mac and choose Safari > Settings, then click General. In the Homepage field, enter the address of the page you'd like to use as your homepage. To simply use the webpage you're currently viewing, click Set to Current Page. If you'd like to set up multiple pages as your homepage, you can enter each webpage address in its own line in the Homepage field. Once you've entered all of the addresses, they will appear side by side when you open a new window or tab in Safari.
Restoring Safari Browser
Restoring your Safari browser is easy! First, open the Safari menu and choose ‘Reset Safari'. This will restart your browser and clear out any saved data (such as browsing history, cookies, and cache) that may have been causing the issue with the problematic site. However, please note that this will also erase other saved data such as your bookmarks and website settings. If you wish to preserve these settings, you can manually back up your data before resetting Safari. To do this, open the Safari menu again and select ‘Export Bookmarks'. You can then save a copy of your data to an external storage device or cloud service. Once you've backed up your data, then you can proceed with resetting Safari.
Adding a Safari Icon to the Home Screen
To add the Safari icon to your home screen, start by swiping right on your device until you see the search box. Begin typing in “Safari” and the app should quickly appear. Once you find the Safari icon, press down on it until a menu appears. Select “Add to Home Screen” from this menu and the Safari icon will be added to your home screen for easy access.
Reinstalling the Safari App
The Safari app is built into the iOS operating system and cannot be uninstalled, however, you can reinstall it by resetting your device to factory settings. To do this, open your Settings app, select General > Reset, and then select “Erase All Content and Settings”. This will restore your device to its original state and reinstall the Safari app. Note that this will delete all of the data on your device, so make sure to back up any important information before proceeding.
Restoring the Safari Icon on an iPhone
If you're using an iPhone running iOS 14 or later, you can easily restore the Safari icon to your Home Screen. First, unlock your phone and swipe left until you come to the App Library. Then, use the search field to find Safari. Once you've located the icon, press and hold it until it starts to jiggle. Then, tap the Add button in the top-left corner of your screen and select Add to Home Screen. That's it! Your Safari icon will now be restored to your Home Screen.
In conclusion, the Safari icon may be missing from an iPhone or iPad due to it having been moved to a folder or hidden home screen, having been turned off in Screen Time Restrictions, or having been accidentally deleted. However, users can check folders and other screens, search for the icon, check restrictions, reset the home screen, and lastly use a swipe down from the middle of any home screen and type Safari into the search field at the top of the screen to locate it.

This method will show any open windows directly above the Dock. As a result, you will be able to switch between windows and potentially reveal any Safari tabs that disappeared on your iPad.
How to Open a Closed Tab on iPhone & iPad
The purpose of this method is to find and reopen tabs you may have accidentally closed. This works on both iPhone and iPad (although the placement of the buttons in the below screenshots will look different depending on your device).
Disable Auto-Close Tabs
Another cause of Safari tabs disappearing is a setting that automatically closes open Safari tabs after a set amount of time. This can prevent the problem of too many open tabs but can also lead to tabs you still want open getting closed. Here's how to solve this issue on your iPhone or iPad.
Bookmark Open Tabs
Once a tab is bookmarked, you will always be able to find it, even if it's closed or your browser history is closed
Check Tab Groups & Safari Profiles
In Safari, you can create tab groups to separate all of your different tabs into specific groups. For example, if you have several recipe tabs open, you could place these tabs into a group called "Dinners." Additionally, iOS 17 and newer include a feature called Safari Profiles, allowing you to separate your browsing sessions into different profiles.
If you are still having trouble opening closed tabs or locating a missing tab, it may, unfortunately, be lost forever. Next, find out the best ways to manage your Safari tabs .
Why do my tabs keep closing on iPhone? You might have your Safari tabs set to automatically close. You can change this by going into Settings, tapping Safari, and then selecting Close Tabs. Check out the above section on how to set your Safari tabs to manually close for more information.
How to close all tabs in Safari? You can close all your open tabs at once. If you've become too overwhelmed by all your open tabs, simply tap and hold the tabs button, then select Close All Tabs. Check out this tip on how to close all tabs at once for a more detailed view.

This new layout is better IMO, but there are a few other problems that kinda bug me
Unpopular opinion, but this new layout is better. I don’t even remember the old layout since I’m not even a long-time iOS user (this is my first iPhone). I looked up the old layout or the “cascade” layout and it looks more painful to me than the new one. By the looks of it, it’s definitely easier to miss a tab you’re looking for in the older version, and then you will have to spend like 10 more minutes scrolling to find the tab you’re looking for. Sure, it may be “faster”, but it’s definitely harder to find the certain tab you’re looking for if most of the tabs are only viewable by a little area at the top. This app is mostly fine except for a few problems I get from time to time. Today I’m having a problem where I was trying to look at some Google images and then I tried to look at more but it was just stuck on loading. It wouldn’t even finish loading. This happened only on like 2 searches thankfully though. I’d probably give it a 95% since it has some minor lags and problems.
Your Underrated Prince, Safari
In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

Apple will let you uninstall safari on iphone, but not in the us.
More region-specific changes are on the way for iPhones.
Apple has been slowly opening up its hardware and software in response to new legislation in the European Union. The iPhone 15's switch to USB Type-C was partially due to new EU laws about phone chargers, and more recently, the company created support for installing third-party app stores for phones in the EU. However, most of the changes are still blocked from working outside of the EU, and now more region-locked features are on the way.
In response to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is making a series of adjustments to iPhones sold in the European Union . Starting later this year, EU iPhone users can completely remove Safari, Apple's default browser, and choose another browser. To ease this transition, Apple is developing a tool to transfer browsing data between browsers. Third-party browsers have famously been quite limited on iOS, as they are still forced to use Safari's engine. EU regulations are making Apple change course on that too and start supporting third-party engines, so hopefully, the fact that you can actually fully replace Safari with the browser of choice will be huge for the few users that can actually take advantage of it.
Additionally, by fall 2025, Apple plans to introduce a solution that simplifies transferring data from iPhones to devices running different operating systems. This will make switching to Android phones a smoother process, and companies like Samsung and Google will certainly take advantage of this to improve its already-existing transfer tools. The focus on interoperability extends beyond browsers. Third-party payment apps will also be able to leverage the iPhone's NFC chip for contactless payments, offering users more options beyond Apple Pay. Developers can also submit requests for additional functionalities that enhance compatibility between iPhones and other devices. These requests will be evaluated to ensure they align with the DMA's goals and that effective solutions can be developed.
While these changes are all great, Apple is also making sure that they comply with EU users and EU users only. For US folks to see most of these changes, we might actually need similar legislation coming from the US government, which could happen soon .

Safari search bar missing after updating to iOS 17.4 on iPhone
After I updated my phone to iOS 17.4 today the search bar went missing🙀
I can’t use Safari anymore, although I’ve been using it forever, and I’m so used it, and I even have like 60 tabs opened there, but can’t open a new one, or go to a new one in any of them, because the search bar went just missing after the new software update!!🙀🤯
And not just for me, my friend is facing the same issue after the update🙀🙀

No, I’ve tried to change everything on the settings already, and nothing fixes the issue!
I know already 5 persons with the same issue after running the latest iOS 17.4 update, so that’s a major issue that’s Apple facing right now!
I’m purely advising people not to update their phone right now, before Apple has addressed the issue, or before there has came out iOS 17.5!

I mean all the tab is gone, can’t even go back, because even the buttons for going back are gone!🙀

I could fix it by changing the settings to Single Tab and then back to Tab Bar
