North Jakarta (Indonesian: Jakarta Utara ) is one of the municipalities of the Indonesian capital, along the Java Sea coast, and the location where Jakarta began to take shape. The colonial Dutch legacy still lives on at the Old Town ( Kota Tua , at the border with West Jakarta ) and the Sunda Kelapa harbour. When you are done with history, find amusement at Ancol , great food at Pluit or Kelapa Gading , and vibrant shopping destination at Mangga Dua . It is also the gateway to the Thousand Islands , and the location of Indonesia's busiest port, Tanjung Priok . Almost 2 million people, many of whom are of Chinese descent, call this part of the city home.

By train [ edit ].

There are only three railway stations in North Jakarta, at Tanjung Priok, Ancol, and Kampung Bandan. All three of these stations are on the commuter rail network's ( KA Commuter Jabodetabek ) pink line, which connects to Kota station in West Jakarta . In addition, Kampung Bandan station is on the yellow line, with a direct connection to Depok and Bogor . For most long-distance trains, you will need to go to Gambir or Pasar Senen stations in Central Jakarta .

By ferry [ edit ]

The -6.09816 106.8762 1 Tanjung Priok port is not only a container port, but also has a large passenger port terminal. All ferry ships to other areas across Indonesia dock there. Ferries operated by PELNI connect Tanjung Priok to all major ports, from Sumatra to Bali , and from Kalimantan to Papua . Obviously, taking a ferry is only a good option if you have a lot of time, as it takes several days to reach most other major islands.

The Jakarta Inner Ring Road ends at Pluit in the west and Tanjung Priok at the east. The Outer Ring Road ends at Pantai Indah Kapuk in the west. The airport tollroad has a direct connection to the western side.

• -6.1283 106.8089 1 Galangan VOC ( VOC Shipyard ), Jl. Kakap No. 1-3 . Dating back to 1628, this is the former trade office and ship repair of the VOC (East Indies Trade Company) built by the Dutch. It is the center of the trade routes that stretched from Japan to Cape Town, from the Spice Islands to Persia. The place is now a restaurant, also called the VOC (Very Old Café), but still maintains what's left of history.  
• -6.1275 106.8091 2 Jakarta Port Authority's Lookout Tower , on the corner of Jl Pakin and Jl Pasar Ikan, Sunda Kelapa , ☏ +62 21 315 4094 . Established in 1834, it functioned as the watchtower for ships docking and departing Sunda Kelapa Harbor. No longer used, the building is in dilapidated condition.

• -6.1039 106.7342 6 Taman Wisata Alam Angke Kapuk ( use the BKTB from Monas, Pluit, or Kota ). Daily 08:00-19:00 . Similar to Muara Angke but does not require a permit. Larger, even has a place to stay and playing boats. No DSLR cameras allowed. It is an artificial park, not a nature preserve, and patrons can plant mangrove trees there, if they obtain a ticket. Rp25,000 .

Cinema [ edit ]

Most malls have at least one cinema. For a rate of Rp50,000 you have a plush seat and a big silver screen. Other theaters, though, are willing to go beyond just watching movies. Here are some cinema that have more facilities, rather than just movie theatres.

A particular feature of Jakarta's North area is the dedicated districts for culinary delights. Ethnic Asian specialties can be found at Pantai Indah Kapuk for a wide range of prices while Chinese and seafood restaurants are abundant at Muara Karang on the west side. Kelapa Gading on the east side have uniquely themed dining that fits for all budgets. There are definitely too many restaurants to be listed here, you'll be spoiled with choices! Most of these areas consist of East Asian restaurants (or Chinese Indonesian) though, so if you are looking for something else, the shopping malls usually have it.

The North is where middle or high school kids tend to hang out, thus bars may not be obvious apart from signs that explicitly indicate so. The Pantai Indah Kapuk has its fair share of pubs, cafés, bobba teas, and ice cold desserts. Be sure to come early in the meal time on the weekend as this area is instantly a huge blast! Moving over to Ancol, Mangga Besar, and Mangga Dua, this is where the passionate yet shady nightlife of Jakarta is!

Comfortable room and tidy. The place is also cozy and clean. I was so happy with the experience in ibis style sunter. Definitely worth the price and going to be here again if I have a chance, the staff Dinda in receptionist is also helpful as well as good communication skills.

In general, the experience was satisfactory. The hotel's strategic location made it suitable for my stay. The front desk recognized my loyalty status and provided the corresponding benefits. However, there were significant deficiencies in bathroom hygiene. The trash bin had sticky substances at the bottom, the toilet seat was broken, the sink was dirty and clogged, and there was a slimy pinkish residue resembling phlegm from a previous guest, which caused the sink to clog. It is appreciated that you provided a bolster; however, it comes without any linen. It appears to be quite old, and I am uncertain when it was last cleaned, if ever. Lastly, the bath towel was in an unacceptable condition. It was unpleasant to the touch and emitted an unpleasant odor, similar to an improperly dried towel that smelled like feet.

I have good experience in overall so far. The receptionist upgraded my room and I was able to check in around 15 minutes before the check in time. The room is clean and tidy. Location is good, easy to order various food delivery from the surrounding area by Grab/Gojek. Thank you.

Price is reasonable and the hotel staff is polite. Breakfast was OK for the price. Recommended hotel for business traveler in Sunter Area. Sunter Lake in North Jakarta is currently the most talked-about lake in town.

Its popularity increased after Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti challenged the city administration to restore the lake so that it could be as clean as lakes in Switzerland.

The challenge was then answered by Deputy Jakarta Governor Sandiaga Uno. On Feb. 25, Susi and Sandiaga are set to compete in the Lake Sunter Festival, in which Sandiaga will swim and the minister will paddle across the lake.

Although Sunter Lake makes for an interesting story, the area has actually many other things to offer. Those wanting to know more about Sunter should have a look at the list below.

How to get there

Sunter is a relatively large residential area, hence it is recommended to explore it using a private vehicle or ride-hailing app, such as Go-Jek, Uber or Grab.

Alternatively, those wanting to use public transportation could choose the Transjakarta bus system.

Those coming from Blok M in South Jakarta can hop on a Transjakarta bus via the Kota route. However, passengers will need to change to the Tanjung Priok route at Penjaringan and get off at Sunter.

The same applies for those coming from Central Jakarta as they can board a Transjakarta bus from Kota via the Tanjung Priok route.

What to wear

Since Sunter is a residential area, t-shirts, shorts and casual sandals are acceptable while dining in restaurants or exploring the outdoors.

However, those wanting to visit Ramlie Mustofa Mosque are recommended to wear appropriate clothes, such as ankle-length skirt or pants and long-sleeved tops.

Sunter Lake is the landmark of the residential area. Prior to Lake Sunter Festival, it was once a go-to place for fishing or watersport activities, such as jet-skis and pedal boats.

However, the challenge has transformed Lake Sunter into a cleaner and friendlier environment. Visitors to the lake will discover wider sidewalks as well as chairs around it, making it a convenient place to stroll in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, parents might consider dropping by the child-friendly public space (RPTRA) Sunter Jaya. Located on Jl. Bentengan VI, the public space comes with a playground, allowing children to enjoy outdoor activities.

What to see

Visitors to Jl. Danau Sunter Selatan will discover a white mosque tucked between luxury houses. Called Ramlie Musofa Mosque, the architecture, at a glance, resembles the famous Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

Inside the well-maintained mosque, which was officially opened in May 2016, visitors will discover Islamic teachings written in Arabic and Latin script, as well as Chinese characters.

What to buy

Sunter is home to a community of Indonesians of Indian descent, hence it is a go-to area for those wanting to buy Indian food ingredients.

On Jl. Danau Sunter Utara, visitors will find two Indian grocery stores, namely Mustafa and Parivar. Both shops offer popular Indian ingredients, such as basmati rice, star anise and more.

What to eat

There are several shopping areas in Sunter that offer a myriad of cuisines.

In Ruko Griya Inti Sentosa, food enthusiasts will discover Medan Baru and Chung Hua.

The former serves Sumatran dishes, such as gulai kepala ikan (fish head curry), rendang (beef stewed in coconut milk) , burung punai goreng (fried pigeon) as well as the Acehnese staple es timun (frozen cucumber) drink.

Meanwhile, Chung Hua is among the longest-standing Chinese restaurants in the capital.

Those looking for Indonesian comfort foods should consider scheduling a visit to Ruko Sunter Paradise on Jl. Danau Sunter Utara, which hosts several Indonesian restaurants, such as Gerobak Betawi, Dapur Solo and Ayam Tulang Lunak Hayam Wuruk.

location to concert place, great lobby design, nice restaurant, comfy beds and pillows

the stay was so pleasant, have a nice stay there. it is close to JIS by car 5 mins! recommended to stay for the concert at JIS

Breakfast is good, there were some variety of foods.

The staff was very friendly, the breakfast was complete (American style and Asian style), spacious rooms, good pool and gym, good internet signal.

The bed is very comfy, receptionists are very helpful and friendly. Breakfast has a lot of Indonesian food varieties, I wish they could put more International breakfast also because I saw many foreigners were struggling. Overall, I am satisfied considering what I am paying for.

The staff service is friendly and attentive. Cleanliness is well maintained, and facility is moderate. The breakfast is moderate but enough for the day.
