Full details on Gautrain prices in 2023, including PDF schedule and times

Ali Bahati Juma

Gauteng commuters can now get all the details on Gautrain prices 2023, including the schedule and times, after the service published PDF timetables on its website.

The new Gautrain fares come into effect on 1 June 2023 and will depend on whether you’re commuting during peak times or off-peak times.

Peak and off-peak times

“Peak fares indicated in orange are applied when you access the Gautrain system between 06h00 and 08h30, between 15h00 and 18h30 on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays,” the Gautrain Management Agency said.

“Off-peak fares indicated in green are applied when you access the Gautrain system before 06h00, between 08h30 and 15h00 or after 18h30 on weekdays.”

For Pay-As-You-Go commuters, the minimum available value on a Gautrain card is R34 while the maximum that can be loaded is R3,200.

“Simply load your preferred Pay-As-You-Go value onto your Gautrain Card and the correct fare will be automatically deducted from your Card when tagging out,” the Agency explained.

“For a trial period, high-peak fares (Red Fares) have been suspended when travelling in the high peak period. While the high-peak fares no longer apply, expect more congested trains, platforms and stations. For your comfort, we recommend that you travel off-peak. Depending on capacity constraints, we may re-introduce the high-peak fares at a later date.”

The cheapest Gautrain ticket price in 2023 is R34 while the most expensive is R234, which is what one would pay to commute between Hatfield and OR Tambo International Airport .

Everything You Need to Know about Using the Gautrain

Gautrain: (noun) mass rapid transit railway system in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Can be used as a verb, as in " I am Gautraining it today. "

Cast your mind way, way back. The year is 2000 and Destiny's Child "Independent Women" is the smash hit of the year. Around about this time, South Africa is in a celebratory mood as the 21st century is named the African Century and the Gautrain Project is announced.

Fast-forward to today and the Gautrain has made travelling between Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Ekurhuleni so easy. To experience the 80 kilometre mass rapid magic for yourself, here's your handy guide to using the Gautrain :

1. First of all, you have to get to a station .

With a dedicated Gautrain Bus service and convenient drop-off and Park-and-Ride facilities to help you get to the stations, using the Gautrain is easy-peasy. For bus routes near you, click here.

Tip: To use the bus service, each passenger must have a loaded Gautrain Gold Card . Cards can be purchased at the stations and at various retailers . But remember, the bus service is not operational on the weekends or public holidays . However, this excludes the Montecasino shuttle .

Maslow Hotel guests take note! Since The Maslow already offers luxurious accommodation near the Gautrain, it was only fitting that the best Sandton hotel also offers complimentary return transfer service every 30 minutes to the Sandton Gautrain station. Make the most of this service and squeeze in a shopping spree at Sandton City while you're at it!

2. Check train times and buy your ticket .

The peak periods are from Monday to Friday with the morning peak period running from 05h30 to 08h30 and the afternoon peak period running from 15h00 to 18h00.

During peak periods there is a train every 12 minutes and every 20 minutes during off-peak periods. On the weekends and public holidays , you can catch a train every 30 minutes.

Tip: Remember to have at least R21 available on your Gautrain Gold Card to access any fare gate.

3. If you regularly Gautrain it, register your Gautrain Gold Card.

Although this is not required, by registering your card you can ensure that if your card is lost or stolen, your unused credit can be transferred to a new card. Registering your card can be done at the Ticketing Office at all stations.

Tip: Regular Gautrain passengers should check out the regular commuter saving options available by clicking here .

Enjoy the journey, but remember no eating or drinking!

Noted for its sparkling clean interior, eating and drinking is strictly prohibited on all trains.

Tip: Out-of-towners looking for accommodation near the Gautrain should check out The Maslow .

Moms and tots take note: Travelling with a pram? No worries, the family-friendly Gautrain stations are fitted with wide fare gates that can fit tractor-sized prams and there are baby changing facilities at all stations.

Tell us: do you use the Gautrain?

Ratings and Reviews

Used to be good.

The app used to be useful but it’s so frustrating now. Trying to see schedules ahead of time is impossible. Going through the annoying registration process only to still not have functionality is so frustrating. Apps are supposed to be quicker and more useful on the go than the websites.

Update issues

Just updated to the new app. The features are great and will definitely make getting info better and easier. However, there are some things that could be improved: 1. I have a notification bubble on my app that shows 7 notifications. When I open the app is doesn’t show any notifications and so I can’t clear these. It’s quite frustrating - pls fix this. 2. I logged into my profile, but every time I close the app it logs me out. This should be like other apps, that once you login your details are saved so you don’t have to keep typing in login details.

A worthwhile app

If you are a regular Gautrain user, this app will make your life easier. Not only is the train schedule useful, but you can also register and reload your fare card without having to stand in line. True, the bus route functionality (tracking) never seems to work, but this is only one of the apps functionality. Get it!

Gautrain Schools Excursion Program

How it works:.

  • To participate in the Gautrain School Excursion Program ("Program"), interested primary and/or secondary schools must complete registration either on the Gautrain website  https://www.gautrain.co.za/commuter/schooltravel or by submitting a manual application form that can be obtained upon request, and which should be returned to  [email protected]
  • Within two to four (2-4) business days of completing the registration or application, the school will receive an e-mail with a cost estimate for their tailor-made school excursion.
  • Proof of payment must be received at least five (5) business days prior to the school excursion, or alternatively, customers may make an immediate payment/real-time payment/pay-and-clear payment and send Proof of Payment to  [email protected] .
  • The Program is valid from 1 June 2021 - 1 June 2025. Gautrain reserves the right to withdraw, postpone, amend, or suspend this Program at any time and for any reason which may be deemed necessary, without prior notice. This Program may also be amended at any time due to Covid-19 regulations as issued by the Government of South Africa.
  • This tailor-made Program is only applicable to schools that will be traveling to their place of interest by the Gautrain train service.
  • Interested schools must ensure that their contact details and school information have been correctly captured upon registration. Gautrain will not be held liable for any losses or additional expenses incurred by the school should their contact details be incorrectly captured.
  • Whilst we make every effort to reserve discount entry fees/prices at the list of places of interest, prices may fluctuate, depending on the place of interest. We will however timeously inform the school of any price changes.
  • Bombela will provide costs to the interested schools, this cost estimate will include all fees for the school excursion, which is inclusive of the Gautrain train and bus fares and entry fees of the place of interest. The schools must collect the monies from the scholars and make a single payment to Bombela at least five (5) business days before the school excursion. This will enable Bombela to make the respective payment/s to the place of interest on behalf of the school, as well as to make the other travel arrangements necessary for a successful school excursion.
  • Proof of Payment must be sent to  [email protected] at least five (5) business days prior to the excursion. Alternatively, immediate payment/real-time payment/pay-and-clear payment is also acceptable and the Proof of Payment must be sent to  [email protected] at least 2 hours before the school arrives at a Gautrain station.
  • Bombela will provide the school with confirmation of the excursion in writing via e-mail. This e-mail will confirm receipt of proof of payment as well as the date and time for the school excursion.
  • Please note that should the school pay more than the costs quoted by Bombela, the onus will be on the school to request a refund of this overpayment. Should no such refund request be received by Bombela within a period of 60 days from the date of payment, the school will be deemed to have forfeited the excess payment and shall have no claim whatsoever as against Bombela for such excess payment.
  • Interested schools will be responsible for the payment of the full Gautrain fare per scholar as well as discounted entry fee at the place of interest per scholar. Visit the Gautrain website to view fares:  co.za/commuter/farecalc
  • This Program will only take place during Gautrain off-peak hours which are currently between 08h30 and 15h00 on weekdays, but which may change from time to time. Visit the Gautrain website to view the applicable schedule:  https://www.gautrain.co.za/commuter/schedule .
  • Schools participating in this Program shall remain responsible to obtain consent from Parents and/or Guardians of the participating scholars.
  • Educators/caregivers will be responsible for the scholars for the duration of the excursion (from the time of departure from the school until the time of arrival back at the school).
  • Gautrain Management Agency, Bombela or any of their sub-contractors or affiliates will not be held liable for any claim for loss, injury, illness, medical emergency, or death arising from participation in this Program.
  • By participating in the Program, the school acknowledges and agrees that it shall indemnify Bombela from any and all claims as described above, made by the scholars (or parent(s)/guardian(s) thereof), and/or the points of interest.
  • Bombela will not be held liable for the products and/or services rendered by the places of interest and any queries related to the third party's products and/or services must be addressed directly with the respective third party.
  • Standard Gautrain refund fares apply. Visit the Gautrain website to view fees:  https://www.gautrain.co.za/termsconditions
  • Cancellations must be made at least 72 hours in advance of the scheduled date of the excursion, failing which an administrative fee, as well as entry fees at place of interest/s may be charged.
  • Schools may reschedule a school excursion depending on the availability of the selected place of interest.
  • Schools must submit any special request/s prior to making payment to  [email protected] .
  • All standard Gautrain rules are to be observed at all times. Penalty fees may be applied should passengers fail to adhere to the Gautrain rules. Please refer to the Gautrain website for Gautrain Travel Rules:  https://www.gautrain.co.za/commuter/generalinformation .
