Constantly changing airfares and schedules, thousands of available vacation packages, and a vast amount of travel information on the Internet can make travel planning frustrating and time-consuming. To sort out the many travel options, tourists and business people often turn to travel agents, who assess their needs and help them make the best possible travel arrangements. Also, many major cruise lines, resorts, and specialty travel groups use travel agents to promote travel packages to millions of people every year.

In general, travel agents give advice on destinations and arrange for transportation, hotel accommodations, car rentals, tours, and recreation. They also may advise on weather conditions, restaurants, tourist attractions, and recreation. For international travel, agents also provide information on customs regulations, required papers (passports, visas, and certificates of vaccination), and currency exchange rates.

Travel Career Development

The Travel and Tourism Certificate program requires students to achieve 32 hours (CEUs.) This package course is design for travel planners, owners, and agents, independent contractors that seek knowledge about IATAN or CLIA qualifications to practice as a travel agent.

The topics listed in the course description will enable you to master selling skills, basic geography. Learn how to close a sell and how to profit from sells. We will factor in tours to potential vendors, agencies and hotels.

This is a pre-requisite two-part series program. A letter of recognition and certificate is awarded upon completion of 32 hours total in this series.

Travel agent certification isn’t required, but it will help you be successful in your career.

One of the most popular certifications is the CTA from The Travel Institute.

To qualify, you will need to complete the Travel Institute training program.

Then, you can take the TAP, or Travel Agent Proficiency, test.

The test has 100 multiple-choice questions, and you’ll have 2 hours to complete it.

  • The register should include the name, address and contact information of each travel retailer. Initial License Application

  • pay the applicable fee of $54, required by Insurance Article, § 2-112, Annotated Code of Maryland;

  • complete and submit the NAIC Uniform Application.

Renewal Application

​Individual producer licenses are issued to expire on the last day of the producer’s birth month. Business entity licenses are issued to expire 2 years from the date of issuance.

The fee to renew a license is $69. This includes the $54 renewal fee and the $15 fraud prevention fee (§2-112). 

For up to one (1) year after the expiration date, licensees may reinstate an expired license by submitting the required application, $54 renewal fee, $15 fraud prevention fee, and $100 reinstatement fee.

Note: Regardless of who completes the application, the license applicant is ultimately responsible for the contents of the application and must provide accurate and complete information (if the application was completed by someone other than the applicant, the person who completes an application may also be held responsible for the contents of the application). An application that fails to disclose or fails to provide accurate information may result in the DELAY and/or DENIAL of the application. If your license has already been issued and it is later discovered that the information contained in your application is not true, correct, or complete, your license may be REVOKED and you may be subject to monetary PENALTIES (if the application was completed by someone other than the applicant, the person who completed the application may also be subject to administrative action). If in doubt, disclose.

​ In most cases, complete applications are processed in 7-10 business days. Incomplete applications may incur delays, be rejected/denied or not be processed. Incomplete applications pending over 120 days may be rejected.

Note: All license or certificate fees are non-refundable and non-transferable whether the application has been approved, denied, cancelled, withdrawn, or when an applicant submits multiple applications for the same license or certificate.

A travel agent is a professional who is passionate about travel and helping others. They are focused on creating the best possible experiences, directly catered to their clients. They work with hotels, airlines, and other vendors to create travel packages and experiences that their clients will love. Travel agents can work with large groups, individuals, families, professional organizations, and others to help create seamless travel experiences that help create memories. This program features courses that will provide the foundational knowledge to start a travel career. The course series enables the student to learn about the airline industry, ground transportation, hotels and resorts, cruises, tours, international and domestic travel, reservations and pricing, specialty travel, and more.  Students entering this program should have strong organizational skills, excellent customer service skills and telephone manner, and strong communication and sales skills. Since this course is delivered completely online, students need to have the self-discipline to complete all required material on their own.  Some travel agents work for travel agencies, and many others​ are self-employed. Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this Continuing Education Workforce Certificate, students will be able to:

  • function effectively as a travel agent in tourism industry,
  • describe the professional skills and knowledge for domestic and international travel planning,
  • meet the eligibility requirements for the Travel Agent Proficiency (TAP) test offered by the Travel Institute (formerly ICTA), and
  • prepare to gain employment as a travel agent in the tourism industry.​

Business Pathway  - Pathways are designed to help you meet your academic and career goals by aligning related courses and programs.  Pathway students participate in a variety of activities that help explore career opportunities in their field of study.  You can meet with a CCBC advisor who help align — or realign — your educational plan with the Pathway that best supports you and your goals.

CCBC Credential:  Students will be awarded a Continuing Education Workforce Certificate and have access to a Continuing Education academic record (transcript).

External Credential: Travel Agent Proficiency (TAP) Certification

Financial Aid and Payment Options

We offer financial aid by packaging public and private funding options to those who qualify, in select Continuing Education courses and programs. Additional opportunities for financial support include partial payment options through Nelnet Business Solutions and tuition waivers for those who qualify. Resources outside of CCBC may also be available through employer/sponsor paid tuition,  the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), and your local office of workforce development.
