Front engined, retrofit cruise control and on board computer.

One of the many upgrades we offer at Revolution Porsche is a retrofit cruise control solution.

' title=

You may well wonder whether a function to limit and control speed really has any place in a sports car that was designed for an exhilarating driving experience, but conditions for motorists have changed in recent years.

The introduction of average speed cameras on motorways, dual carriageways and in long sections of roadworks have made cruise control an attractive option for Porsche drivers.

Rather than trusting your right foot and having to check the speedo every few hundred yards, switching on the cruise control for the duration of the speed check area means you can relax and forget about the possibility of picking up a £100 fine and three points on your licence.

With more than 300 miles of the country’s roads being converted into ‘smart motorways’ with variable speed limits closely monitored by cameras, the chances of being fined for a momentary lapse in concentration are set to increase – particularly as the cameras are usually in operation 24 hours a day.

While the ‘smart motorways’ are a good idea for traffic management on stretches that are notoriously busy, some motorists have complained that they spend too much time focusing on the speedometer instead of the road while driving through them. The ability to control their speed with a quick adjustment of the cruise control stalk helps to avoid that distraction.

Avoiding speeding fines and points is not the only benefit of installing retrofit cruise control, as equipment manufacturers also claim the systems help to reduce driver fatigue and improve fuel efficiency. But, as you’ve chosen to buy a Porsche 911 or Boxster, we think we know which issue will be the most important for you.

At Revolution Porsche we regularly install retrofit cruise control to a wide range of Porsche models, helping to give our customers peace of mind that they won’t be caught out by speed cameras in controlled areas.

We supply and fit genuine Porsche cruise control stalks for:

  • 996 C2 + C4 + Turbo (2002-2004): £469
  • Boxster (2003-2004): £469

Add £50 to all the above prices if the 4 stalk including onboard computer and cruise is installed. These are the genuine Porsche stalk controls; we do not fit the cheaper single dash mounted button type.

  • Gen 1 and 2 987/Cayman and 997: £450
  • 981 Boxster/Cayman and 991:£475
  • Colour Coded leather cover £POA

All prices are subject to VAT.

Hi, Just picked up a 997.2 C4. Exact spec I wanted but is missing the cruise control. Anyone had this retrofitted? At what cost fron Porsche? Or any cheaper alternatives? Mine is PDK with sport paddle steering wheel. many thanks Rhys

Terry

PCGB Member

I had cruise retrofitted to a 997.1 and, more recently, to a 991. A Porsche dealer or Indy can do it easily. The cost is likely to be circa £400.

I looked in to this on my Cayman, I was told that the wiring is already there as part of the existing loom the money is spent on the 'Cruise Control lever' and the 'new steering column cover' with the hole for said lever, then it just needs plugging into a computer and ticking the 'Cruise Control fitted' box. However, not sure how true this was as it was still around £500 which seemed a lot. I have it on my new car and it is worth getting as it stops you creeping up to silly speeds when cruising on the motorways.

I have done this upgrade. Purchased a 4 stalk unit from eBay and removed cruise control switch, fitted to my existing unit wiring is already installed. You need the bottom plastic cover from the 4 stalk for the cutouts. Had the unit coded to the car at a local Indy £40. Sold the 3 stalk unit on eBay for £10 more than I payed for the 4 stalk (lucky I realise) so total cost £30. Fitting was quite strait forward and well within the capabilities of a competent home mechanic. Hope this helps

If I may, I would like to ask a question that was asked many times before.

I want to add the cruise control to the car. I have sourced the switch and the screws and the short wire are also not an issue, however I am confused on one point.

Is there a need to remove the instrument cluster?

An indi sais that it has to be removed while Pelican says:

"For Boxsters from 2005-08, the installation is much easier. You need to purchase a cruise control switch (PN: 997-613-261-00), a small wiring harness (PN: 997-622-674-00), a new lower steering column cover (PN: 997-552-475-03), and a few Torx screws to secure the new switch (PN: N-909-068-01). There is a factory retro-fit kit available that includes all of these parts and instructions (PN: 997-044-903-00), but you can save money by simply buying the parts separately and looking at the 101Projects.com website for a copy of the installation instructions. Simply remove the bottom cover, install the new switch and harness, plug the harness into the connector on the switch above it, and then install the new lower cover. The cruise control function then needs to be turned on by a Porsche dealer or independent shop with a PIWIS programming tool. The whole process should take about 30 minutes: very simple."

So who is right?

The Indy may be confusing 986 and 987 retrofits. You don't have to remove the instrument cluster on a 987 cruise retrofit.

I added cruise to the 987 I had. It is a doddle.

Remove the steering cowl.Fit the two screws for the stalk. Connect the fly wire, refit with a new cowl, take to dealer or indy for it to be coded in.

No need to remove the steering wheel and no need to remove the instrument cluster.

It took longer for the OPC to code it in than it did for me to fit it.

Thank you guys, most helpful.

Bravestarr

I'm interested in fitting cruise too. What are the costs relating to this? Parts/Coding.

I would like to do this to. The process seems quite straight forward. However sourcing the bits for a reasonable price is not so easy since Porsche upped the price of the parts kit. So where did you get your bits and pieces?

Bravestarr and endgc.

I think that I am nearly qualified to answer the questions.

There are 2 routes that you can follow.

1. Ask indi or a POC to install

2. Source used parts and install.

If you choose route 1 then the price you pay can be anything (seeing other people posts, I didn't research) between £400-£550.

If you choose route 2 is lots down to luck and patience, this is the route I took. (Have a look at the attachment below).

During the last 3 months (since buying the car) I have search all possible forums for information reading most posts going back to 2016 so I can have an idea of prices, sources, who can be trusted etc. Eventually, I found on Ebay a used switch for £98. The wiring and the screws I bought from Porsche, wiring is £32 and 18p for each screw. Then the lower plastic cover needs to be modified. If you have a Dermill it is an easy job, I don't, so decided that for £44 I can afford a new cover, also from Porsche. So say that the parts cost me ~ £160. To program the unit should cost £50 - £80. So the total cost to me will be no more then £250.

Thanks Freeman. I already have an ebay alert setup so a little more patience is needed! I would love to know whether other Porsche cruise switches would fit as you often see them at MUCH more reasonable prices.

The other switches are Left hand, you need a Right Hand. The switch that you need can be found on the Cayman and I think Panamera but am not sure. Search by the part number.

I would be happy to code it for you. Depending on where you are in Herts, I might not be too far away.

I’ve just booked my 987.2 in for this to be retro-fitted next Tuesday at Bristol Porsche.

:D

I managed to buy the 4 stalks for £64 after watching eBay for ages. Removed the cruise stalk link wire and screws, removed my lower cover took a template from the indicator side and modded the cover, a bit a patients and it fits fine.  Didn't even remove steering wheel.  Got Richard to code it when I was passing his place so all works fine.

A small outlay and i have cruise and still have the other stalks to sell - just be patient and it will turn up on eBay

No problem.  Drop me a PM when you are ready, and we'll work it out.

Guys, could use your help. Have a stalk assembly  on the way but i thought i would prepare by removing the lower cowl/cover. Managed to get the 2 screws out , one on each corner close to steering wheel, but it feels like something is still holding it. What am i missing? The upper cover is loose but the lower barely budges.

@Malcolm E Box   @Freeman  skip previous post. After some more studying of internet pics have now found the 3rd screw so i presume taking that out will release the cover.

There is also a 4th corner where the wiring is held onto the bottom cover.

There is probably a way to pop the conenctor out of the cover but I did not find it.

I have just added Cruise to mine - Richard kindly programmed for me.

I noticed that but couldn't figure out what if anything was attached. How did you remove the connector? I'm going to have to modify the cover so need to remove it completely.

I guess that is easier to buy one from your OPC, cost ~ £50.

Either way i have to remove the existing cover but how do i get the plastic connector out?

I don't know what connector you mean. Once I removed the cover I have attached the C.C stalk to its position, connected the cable and used some 3 letters word when I have tried to re-attach the new lower cover.

That's strange. There's a hole towards the front right corner with some sort of stud throught it and holding wiring in place above it. Said hole is clearly shown on parts diagrams. Sadly the stud isn't so i can't figure out what i have to do to shift it. Anyway i'll persevere.

Cruise Control Retrofit

Porsche cruise control retrofit.

You may ask “why fit cruise control to my Porsche?” Well a cruise control retrofit is becoming one of the more frequent upgrade enquiries we receive from Porsche owners.

It has never been a more beneficial upgrade than it is today, with a more stringent approach to the enforcement of speed restrictions and an ever-growing network of smart motorways. These motorway systems operate a variable speed limit designed to ease congestion, but combined with the average speed limits imposed mainly through roadworks, can become a little distractive.

While we all understand the safety reasons behind these speed regulations, they can become quite arduous and distractive, with drivers sometimes spending more time watching their speedo than the road ahead.

This is why a Porsche cruise control upgrade can be such an attractive addition to any Porsche owner. Cruise control provides a simple electronic solution to maintaining a constant speed, with just a simple adjustment on a steering column stalk, it allows you to set a desired speed and maintain this through any restriction.

Cruise control not only allows you to focus more on your surroundings and the road ahead, but it has also been claimed to reduce driver fatigue and increase fuel economy.

At RPM our Porsche technicians are experienced in the correct installation of retrofit cruise control. We offer this service to a wide range of Porsche models and only use genuine Porsche control stalks.

I wouldn't mind fitting CC to my 987.2 and was wondering if anybody can recommend the best place to get it done, or whether it's a relatively easy DIY with just ordering the parts.

I had it done ot the OPC and cost about £300.... I thought it was well worth it and it's very handy for when your in speed limited contra flows and average speed cameras

Uncle Dave

Given you're oop north, Revolution might be a good shout, from their website:

I retrofitted CC to a 986 Boxster a few years ago.  From memory the new stalk unit cost around £110 from my local OPC and a friend did the ECU coding to switch on the CC function (this was after my OPC tried and failed to do it!).

I heard that Porsche significantly increased the cost of the stalk units but as a DIY it was pretty straight forward, providing you have access to someone who can do the coding which requires a Durametric Pro or Porsche factory PIWIS/PS2.

  2. Tech Q&A

The cruise control system is a very simple system. The control stalk on the steering column sends signals to the DME and the instrument cluster. The green cruise control light should turn off and on when cycling the switch at the end of the control stalk. This is the enabling switch for the system.

  3. Cruise Control Retrofit: Instructions

997 cruise retrofit is TOTALLY DIFFERENT to 996. You can buy the retrofit kit from Porsche for about £325+vat, or try to buy a used cruise stalk. Porsche treat the 9x7 cruise stalk as an exchange item, which carries a massive surcharge for non-return of a faulty item. If you want some instructions, drop me a PM with your email address.
