More Rewards Travel Gets an Expedia-sized Upgrade

New partnership means More Rewards cardholders get more travel and more benefits

Vancouver, British Columbia, March 14, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- More Rewards — one of Western Canada’s favourite loyalty programs — is excited to announce the launch of the new and enhanced “ More Rewards Travel, Powered by Expedia ” platform, now available via the More Rewards website, unlocking a bigger world of travel for More Rewards cardholders.

“We are always looking for ways to make the More Rewards program even more rewarding for cardholders, such as our move last summer to expand in-store redemption options with the introduction of ‘Pay with Points,’” said Jamie Nelson , Chief Operating Officer, Pattison Food Group. “Now, thanks to this exciting new partnership with Expedia Group, we’re offering More Rewards cardholders more travel options, more payment flexibility, and dedicated travel customer support.”

With this new partnership, travel booking on More Rewards is supercharged, thanks to Expedia Group ’s industry-leading White Label Template technology where members can access more than 940,000 properties, 500+ airlines, 100+ car rentals and thousands of activities all around the world. This new offering will make shopping for travel a win-win for More Rewards members on all aspects of their vacations.

“We are proud to partner with More Rewards, offering customers greater flexibility and choice in how they spend their loyalty points, and enhancing how they book their next getaway as part of the More Rewards program’s expanded travel platform offering. Expedia Group’s White Label Template technology powers the More Rewards travel site, providing access to a broad choice of hotels, flights, car rentals, and activities, all backed by our deep customer service expertise. This partnership will also bring additional Canadian demand to our global supply partners,” said Casey Selleck, Vice President of Private Label Solutions, New Business, at Expedia Group.

For More Rewards cardholders, the partnership means access to Expedia Group’s extensive breadth and depth of supply. And the new end-to-end More Rewards platform makes it easier than ever to book. Using the new More Rewards Travel, Powered by Expedia platform, cardholders have the choice of paying for travel through points redemption or online payment. Members can redeem any amount of points towards a travel booking and earn one point for every dollar spent through the platform — meaning this partnership not only unlocks easy travel redemption but also a new, exciting way to earn More Rewards points!

To celebrate the launch of More Rewards Travel, Powered by Expedia, More Rewards will be giving away 1,000,000 points (the equivalent of over $4,000 in travel) to one lucky cardholder. To enter, cardholders simply need to scan their card at checkout by March 27, 2024 .

Expedia has been around for a while, and we’re sure most of you have used it at least once to search for a flight.

But do you really know all that Expedia has to offer? And are you really saving money when you book through Expedia?

Let’s dive deep into this site to answer all of your questions and show you everything Expedia can do for you!

Expedia Flights

While you can use Expedia to book lots of different things, flights are probably what comes to mind first. You can access the flight search by clicking Flights in the main search bar at the top of the page.

Booking a flight on Expedia is a simple process.

First, plug in your departure and arrival cities, dates of travel, and the number of passengers. You can also specify preferences such as ticket type (economy, premium economy, business class, first class), one-way, round-trip, or multi-city.

Expedia flight search

The search results page will include sorting and filtering options to the left of the screen.

If you have some flexibility and would like to see prices for different dates, click on Flexible dates right above the search results. This is a great tool to see if you can save some money by adjusting your travel dates (the lowest price options will be highlighted in green while the most expensive will be in red).

Expedia flight search flexible dates

The prices you see are per person for a round-trip flight, and they include taxes and fees (except for any baggage fees the airline charges ).

Once you have found the departure flight you like, click Select to continue with your purchase.

Next, you will be prompted to choose your return flight. Notice the flights that show a +$0 round-trip price — these are the options included in the price you were quoted .

Some flights could have a higher price, which will be added to the original price. Again, click on Select once you have chosen your flight.

Expedia flight price difference

You will then be prompted to bundle a hotel with your flight to save money — more on this in the Packages section below.

From here, you can confirm your flight details and add upgrades if you wish. Double-check your price on the right side of your screen. If there are any booking fees for your purchase, they will be listed here.

Expedia flight total

Click the blue Check out button to proceed. Then you can fill out your payment and traveler information to complete your purchase.

Hot Tip: Expedia offers free cancellation within 24 hours of booking your flight!

As you are completing your booking, you may be asked if you want to purchase travel insurance. Purchasing additional insurance is a personal decision, so be sure to do what you are comfortable with. However, make sure you are an informed consumer first.

There are many travel rewards credit cards with travel insurance so you may not need an extra policy. Cards including the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card come with perks such as trip cancellation insurance and lost luggage insurance.

So if you are purchasing your flight with the right credit card, you could already have all of the insurance you need .

Hot Tip: For a full run-down of the types of insurance offered by credit cards, check out our guide to credit card insurance . And for the times you think you might need to purchase additional coverage, be sure to refer to our guide to buying the best travel insurance .

Does booking your flight through Expedia save you money? Let’s take a look.

We searched for a round-trip flight from Columbus, Ohio to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and compared the cheapest option on Expedia to other OTAs and the airline’s website.

For this search, we actually got the exact same price on Expedia, the airline’s website, and on other websites like Kayak and Orbitz .

We did a second search, from Atlanta, Georgia to Paris to see where we could find the lowest price, and again, the same price was found on all of the sites.

In these situations, it’s best to decide what type of rewards you want to earn (Expedia Rewards vs. Orbitz Orbucks vs. airline miles for example), so you know the best place to book.

Bottom Line: Unfortunately there isn’t an exact science to finding the cheapest flight prices . While Expedia turns out to be a good option many times, it’s always best to take a few minutes to compare prices before you make a purchase.

Expedia Hotels

To start your hotel search on Expedia , just click on Stays in the main search bar. Input your destination, travel dates, and the number of travelers and rooms, then click Search.

Hotel search on Expedia

You’ll be able to filter your search results using the map or various features including amenities, price, or property type listed on the left side of the screen.

Expedia hotel search filter left bar

Each search result will show you the price per night .

The search results will also give you some other information at a glance, including the cancellation policy and any special amenities the hotel might offer (like free breakfast or a resort credit).

Expedia hotel search benefits

Click on a selection to see more information, including room types and prices. The price shown is always for a base-level room.  If you want a premium room or suite, your price will increase from what is initially shown.

Once you have selected your room, click on the blue Reserve button to continue. Then you can fill out your traveler and payment information.

Pay special attention when booking all-inclusive resorts or other types of properties that charge by the person. Be sure you are booking for the correct number of people!

Hot Tip: When searching for accommodations on Expedia, you’ll find vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, condos, and villas in addition to hotels and resorts.

Just as when booking a flight, Expedia will try to sell you hotel booking protection, aka insurance. So, what does it include, and do you really need it ?

Expedia hotel insurance

The first thing you need to know is that this insurance will vary depending on the state you live in. Go here to access the policies for each state.

While there are definitely situations when purchasing extra insurance is a good idea, often you will have some degree of coverage from your credit card, so double-check your benefits before considering an additional purchase.

Many major credit cards offer travel insurance options, including varying degrees of travel accident insurance , trip cancellation insurance , and trip delay insurance .

You might notice that some properties offer special member pricing. All you need to do to access these prices is to create a free Expedia account .

Expedia member pricing on hotels

After a comparison of prices before and after creating an account and logging in, the member prices were indeed lower .

For the properties checked, the savings ranged from $18 to $58 per night . So, it’s definitely worth creating a free account if you plan to book a hotel through Expedia!

Bottom Line: If you are going to book a hotel through Expedia, be sure to create a free account. You can unlock lower members-only pricing!

Now let’s see if Expedia can save you money when booking a hotel. Here are our search results for a week-long stay in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for 2 people:

Expedia matched (or almost matched) or beat the prices for all 3 of the hotel examples. Plus in each instance, Expedia offered a more flexible cancellation policy .

When you are booking a chain hotel such as  Hilton or Hyatt , it usually makes sense to book through the hotel’s website even if the price is the same. Hotels booked through Expedia won’t earn hotel points , and any elite status you have may not be recognized.

Bottom Line: When booking a hotel that has its own rewards program (like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy) through Expedia you won’t be able to earn points or enjoy elite benefits. If those things are important to you, book directly through the hotel’s website.

Expedia Packages

If you’d like to book a combination of a flight, hotel, and/or rental car, check out the Packages section of Expedia.

Expedia Packages

You will see search results that look familiar — you can sort and filter your list just as you do when you search for a hotel or flight separately. The thing that is different is that the price listed is per person and includes all portions of your trip (hotel and flight, for example), plus taxes and fees.

Expedia Package

After you choose your hotel, you will be prompted to choose a flight.

When reviewing the second part of your package, you might notice that there are different prices. If the price is negative, your trip cost will go down; if it is positive, the cost will go up.

Expedia Bundle Save flights

Continue to select the rest of your flights and any other portions you bundled with it. Right before you finalize your payment, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your flight or add things like airport transfers and activities.

While not a guarantee, during our research, we’ve found that package deals can be where the biggest savings are.

Let’s take a look at some examples for a week-long hotel stay and round-trip flights for 2 people:

While you can see that you don’t always save money when booking a Package deal, there is the potential to save quite a bit — as much as $440 from these examples!!

Bottom Line: Expedia package deals combine a flight, hotel, and/or car rental in 1 package. While these deals don’t always save money, more often than not, you can save quite a bit.

Expedia Car Rentals

To book a rental car through Expedia, select the Cars tab in the top menu bar.

You’ll need to input your pick-up and drop-off locations and dates, and you can also specify your preferred rental company or input a coupon code by clicking the I have a discount code dropdown arrow.

Expedia Car Rental Search

Your search results list will default to Expedia’s recommended choices. To change the list to sort by price, just select Total Price in the sort options right above your search results.

To narrow your list, use the filtering options at the left side of your screen. You can filter your results by options including car type, price, and even payment options.

Before completing your booking, you’ll be able to double-check the details of the reservation and request extras such as a navigation system or child car seat.

Expedia car rental extras

Hot Tip: You might notice that there are 2 different prices listed: per week/day and total price. Pay attention to the total price — this will be the higher of the 2, which includes all days and taxes and fees.

Next, you will need to fill out your payment information and decide if you want to add insurance.

You can feel confident declining the insurance if you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , which comes with primary rental car insurance . This benefit covers any loss, theft, or damage to the rental car, as well as towing.

Expedia car rental insurance

There are many credit cards with rental car insurance, so check your wallet before purchasing an extra policy.

Keep in mind that these policies don’t apply to all car types (luxury sports cars are generally not included) and can vary by card, so be sure to double-check the specifics for your card .

In comparing prices between different online travel agencies, we have come to this conclusion: there is no single place where you will find the best prices every time .

Here is what we found when searching for a week-long economy car rental in Punta Cana:

In this example, Priceline offered the lowest price, but you had to pay for your reservation upfront . All of the other prices were for reservations that you could pay at the time of rental. So if flexibility is important to you, Expedia would be a good option here.

Expedia Cruises

The search feature for Expedia cruises is pretty simple. First, click on Cruises in the main menu bar. Input your destination, month of departure, and the number of travelers, then click Search.

Expedia cruises

If you choose a popular destination like the Caribbean, there will be a lot of choices, so you will want to use the filtering options to narrow your results by things like cruise length, departure port, or cruise line.

You will also have the option to sort your list of results by price (listed per person), departure date, and length of cruise.

Each cruise result will display basic information and the price per person .

Expedia cruise filtering and sorting options

Next, you’ll choose your cabin type . This can be a bit overwhelming if you have never cruised before! You will have options including interior cabin, ocean view, balcony, and suites. Then there are even more options in each of those categories.

You will also be able to see if there are any special offers that come with each room type — these offers are usually from the cruise line and not exclusive to Expedia.

Hot Tip: Read the description of your room very carefully — many categories of rooms sound similar. An ocean view room usually just has a small porthole ( often with obstructed views ). Large ships can have balcony rooms overlooking the atriums in the center — so if you want a balcony that faces the ocean, be sure to book an ocean view balcony, not just a balcony!

When pricing out several cruises, we found that most of the time, the price was the same on Expedia as it was on the cruise’s website and other online travel agencies.

While the base prices tend to be the same across most websites, you’ll often find that the extra perks and benefits like ship credit or free specialty dining can vary by website, so it’s always best to check a few before booking.

If you collect Expedia Rewards points, it might make sense to book through Expedia. Otherwise, you might want to book directly with the cruise line or see if any other sites offer any extras.

Either way, make sure you are using a credit card that earns bonus points on cruise travel when booking direct or a card that earns points on general travel when booking through Expedia to earn lots of points for your purchase.

Hot Tip:  Booked your cruise but not sure how to prepare? Check out this ultimate cruise packing guide with tons of tips and advice.

Expedia Things To Do

You can use Expedia to book activities at your destination , too. Just go to the Things to Do tab in the main menu, enter your destination and dates of travel, and then click Search.

Expedia things to do

You will likely have lots of results, which you can filter by criteria including activity type and budget.

Each result will give you some basic information about the activity, including the price per person and the name of the tour company. Remember, it’s always a good idea to check what the prices would be if you booked direct.

Click on any result to get more information, check availability for your dates, and complete the booking.

Hot Tip: You can earn or redeem Expedia Rewards points when booking activities through Expedia.

When pricing out a few activities, we found that the prices were all over the map:

  • Some activities were the same price on Expedia versus the tour company’s website
  • An activity was available on Expedia but not the tour operator’s site
  • An activity was more expensive on Expedia, but Expedia offered the ability to book for 1 person; the tour operator’s site was less expensive but had a minimum of 2 people

So, again, there is never a right answer here. Expedia is often a good choice for booking things to do during your vacation, but it never hurts to do a quick check on the tour operator’s site .

Expedia Deals

If you’ve got some flexibility, check out Expedia’s featured deals  under the Deals tab under the More travel dropdown menu.

Expedia Deals

The deals are broken down by location and are usually only available for specific dates, so it’s good to have some flexibility if you’re looking to save the most money.

When you click on each deal, you should be taken to a search results list with your chosen deal at the top, but we found that wasn’t always the case. Sometimes we could see the deal, but sometimes it was nowhere to be found.

You can find Expedia coupon codes in a few different places.

First, you can try the Expedia coupons page . Coupons are not always available, but it’s good to check before making a purchase.

You can also check some of the popular coupon sites. Here are some links to check out the next time you are using Expedia:

  • Expedia coupons on Groupon
  • Expedia coupons on Rakuten
  • Expedia coupons on RetailMeNot

One Key Rewards

One Key is the rewards program shared by Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. It allows you to earn points called OneKeyCash on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, flights, car rentals, and more across the 3 brands.

Members receive 2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, activities, packages, car rentals, and cruises. Unfortunately, the earning rate for flights is poor — just 0.2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible flights.

Members can also receive discounts of 10% or more on hotels and up to 30% when booking a hotel and flight together.

Just as with most frequent flyer or hotel rewards programs, Expedia’s One Key offers different levels of status. Status levels are determined based on how many trip elements you collect. You’ll get 1 trip element for each hotel or vacation rental night, each flight, each car rental day, each cruise night, and each activity ticket.

VIP Access Hotels are a group of over 3,000 properties that offer higher standards and consistently get rave reviews and ratings.

Expedia VIP Access hotels

All members earn 2% OneKeyCash when booking VIP Access properties and Silver, Gold, and Platinum members get extra perks.

Bottom Line: One Key is Expedia’s loyalty program. OneKeyCash is earned at variable rates by booking eligible flights, hotels, cars, activities, and vacation packages through Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo.

Expedia offers special deals and benefits when you book through its mobile app ( iOS and Android ). You can earn double Expedia Rewards points  on every booking through the app and save up to 30% by booking a mobile-exclusive deal.

If your trip is booked through Expedia, you will also get notifications on changes or delays and will be able to access your itinerary.

Expedia used to offer 2 co-branded cards, the Expedia ® Rewards Card from Citi  and the Expedia ® Rewards Voyager Card from Citi, however, they are no longer available.

Expedia is a huge online travel agency that offers lots of different products and services, including flights, hotels, car rentals, and cruises. While it isn’t a slam dunk for the lowest price every time, there are deals to be had.

One Key offers points-earning capabilities to get even more value out of every booking you make through Expedia.

Whether or not Expedia is your go-to travel search site, it’s worth taking a look at when booking your next trip.

Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars.

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com

expedia more travel

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable.

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile.

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

  • Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
  • Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices
  • Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer
  • Destination travel guides and articles

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

Expedia offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do.

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals.

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan.

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points.

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

  • Hotel, flight, and car bundles
  • Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary
  • Reward points system
  • Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Tripadvisor.

expedia more travel

TripAdvisor offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and things to do.

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

  • Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals)
  • Comparing deals across aggregators
  • Strong user-generated review community
  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price.

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs.

  • Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
  • Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on.

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights.

  • Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page.
  • Travelers on a budget
  • Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Travelocity.

expedia more travel

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same.

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page.

  • All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle
  •  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options.

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel.

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day.

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

  • Travelers with low hotel and car brand loyalty who want to find a great deal
  • Having a more focused cruise search process
  • Travel inspiration or destination guides
  • Low risk takers who like to know exactly what they're getting

How does Expedia work?

Is expedia reliable, ways to get a good deal on expedia, expedia is legit.

Expedia is an online travel agency (OTA) that might come up in your search when you’re searching for travel deals, including flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and activities. In 2023, Expedia launched a loyalty program called One Key, allowing travelers to earn and redeem rewards across its three most popular brands: Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

Let’s take a look at how Expedia works and whether it’ll save you money.

Video preview image

Because Expedia is a travel agency, its website or app's travel search features will return you results from multiple companies. For instance, if you search for a hotel in Miami, Expedia will display options from brands like Marriott , IHG , Hilton and Hyatt , and even boutique hotels.

Booking on Expedia is much faster than going to each company’s individual website, since it can be a good way to compare prices from multiple options at once.

How to find and book travel on Expedia

Like other OTAs, you’ll book travel using Expedia’s website or app.

If you’re on a computer, once you’re on the site’s homepage, you can enter your search details. Expedia allows you to book hotels, flights, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and even things to do.

expedia more travel

Once you’ve completed your searching, you’ll be taken through the booking process. As an OTA, Expedia acts as the intermediary between you and the actual travel operators.

Many hotels and rental car agencies have restricted the ability to earn points or elite status credits when using an online travel agency for bookings. This does not generally apply to airlines, so you can usually still earn miles for flights booked through OTAs.

This means that if you were looking for a stay and chose to book a Marriott hotel through Expedia, Expedia would take your booking, head on over to Marriott to confirm availability, then process your reservation. It’ll then pass on those reservation details to the Marriott hotel.

You might be cautious of go-betweens or third-party booking sites, but Expedia is a legitimate, well-known online travel agency that’s been around for years. Microsoft originally launched the Expedia website in 1996. These days, Expedia is part of the larger Expedia Group, which includes brands such as Hotels.com , Orbitz, Hotwire, Travelocity, Vrbo and CarRentals.com.

All this is to say that Expedia is a reliable company. This isn’t some shady, fly-by-night operation.

However, you’ll always want to be careful when booking with a third party. It may be harder to change or cancel your reservation, and it might be wise to confirm any reservations directly with the travel operator. You’ll want to be sure that the details of your travel are correct and the reservation was actually made.

Expedia can offer cheap travel deals across the spectrum, but it doesn’t just stop at your booking. There are a few other ways to help pump up the savings on your vacations.

1. Use a travel credit card to get rewards

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

If you aren’t already using a credit card to book your travel, you ought to be. In addition to earning bonus points on your purchases, some credit cards provide travel insurance free of charge as long as you use the card to purchase the trip.

When booking your trips, use a credit card that maximizes earnings on travel. This includes options such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which earns 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points per dollar spent on all travel.

NerdWallet values Chase points at 2.2 cents each if you take advantage of transfer partners. That means you’ll be getting a 7.8% return when using this card to book travel, including bookings made on Expedia.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

2. Sign up for One Key Rewards

If you book any travel with Expedia, it’s worth it to sign up for One Key, the site’s free member rewards program. As a member, you’ll receive 2% OneKeyCash for each $1 you spend on travel as well as elite status based on each travel segment booked. One Key is a unified program for Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, so the loyalty perks can be earned and redeemed across all three programs.

By signing up for One Key, you become a Blue member, which — according to Expedia — allows you to save at least 10% on more than 100,000 hotels globally. As you move up the tiers in status, your savings and benefits increase with higher discounts.

Triple-dip your reward earnings by stacking your credit card bonus points and One Key rewards by using a shopping portal when booking.

You can also opt to get an Expedia credit card if you really want to pledge your loyalty to the brand.

» Learn more: The One Key Rewards guide

3. Take advantage of Expedia’s best price guarantee

Expedia has its own best price guarantee when booking hotels, which will refund you the difference in cost if you find a cheaper price elsewhere. There are restrictions for this process — the cheaper option must be identical to Expedia’s offering, and you must be able to provide proof. If you’ve found a lower price, submitting a claim for a price match can be a good way to save money on your hotel bookings.

However, before you go ahead with your Expedia booking, you’ll want to check the prices for hotels when booking directly. This is because major hotel chains such as Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott often not only match a lower price you found elsewhere, but they’ll also provide up to a 20% to 25% discount on the entire stay or bonus points.

» Learn more: The pros and cons of Expedia

4. Skip rental car insurance if you already have coverage

As we mentioned above, Expedia offers the ability to rent cars. Along with the booking, you can also opt to include extras, such as additional drivers and rental car insurance.

But is Expedia car rental insurance a good deal? Not usually — rather than paying extra for this benefit, use a travel card that offers complimentary rental car insurance . This includes options such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express , among many other cards. Terms apply.

» Learn more: Best credit cards for online travel booking websites

Expedia has grown to become one of many large travel brands under the Expedia Group designation. While booking travel via an OTA can save you money, you’ll always want to double check your reservations with the travel provider and only book reservations that you are fairly confident that you’ll keep. Canceling can be a huge headache.

However, when stacked together with multiple ways to earn rewards, Expedia can be a great way to save some money on your travels.

What travelers should know about booking a trip with Costco Travel

expedia more travel

When Cathi White books a trip, she always checks Costco Travel first. For over a decade, she has booked a range of vacations with the wholesale retailer, from theme parks to island getaways with her family.

"Places like Disneyland are very, very expensive, but they've always got some kind of deal going," said White, 50, who lives in Indianapolis.

On a trip she booked through Costco to Grand Cayman in 2019, she estimated she saved $2,000 by using the service.

Much like packs of paper towels or jumbo jars of mayonnaise, Costco Travel can offer shoppers deals on everything from cruises to rental cars. But travelers and travel experts say the service has some limitations as well.

How does Costco Travel work?

Costco Travel offers a range of options for travelers looking to book a trip. "We use our buying authority to negotiate the best value in the marketplace, and then pass on the savings to Costco members ," the service said on its website .

Those include curated vacation packages to select destinations around the world, which may include combinations of flights, hotel stays, car rentals and more, according to Assistant Vice President and General Merchandise Manager Chris Hendrix.

"In these bundled packages, our buyers vet and hand pick each resort and component. … We limit our selection to ensure the best quality and value," he said in an email.

What can you book through Costco Travel?

Travelers can also book cruises, rental cars and build their own trips to various U.S. cities, booking hotel stays or bundling them with flights and car rentals, according to Hendrix. Those making bookings can do so online or by phone, and the service has reservation agents that can assist travelers before, during and after their trip, he said.

Can Costco Travel replace a travel agent?

Brian Ayers and his wife booked a Costco Travel package for their honeymoon in Greece in part because of the convenience. The 2019 trip, which took them to Athens, Santorini and Mykonos marked his first time out of the country, and he said it "was going to be much too complex for us to measure it out, just because booking ferry times and hotels, there were just so many choices."

Even when their plans hit a snag after a ferry was canceled, leaving them "hanging out at the ferry station for a couple of hours," the 29-year-old said, Costco Travel was a helpful intermediary. Ayers, who lives in Lewisville, Texas, and works for a semiconductor chip   manufacturer, called the service, which confirmed with the ferry provider that their tickets would be valid on the next one available.

However, Kerry Mooneyham, owner of Midwest Travel Solutions said booking through Costco Travel is not the same as working with a travel agent that can offer more personalized guidance.

"You're going to have the same cruise whether you book it directly with Carnival, you book it with Costco, or you book it with me," she said. "The cruise is exactly the same. ... It's behind the scenes that we do things to make it better."

She said booking with Costco Travel may make more sense for some trips than others.

"I think maybe when you're not exactly sure what is the best option for you is really a time when you should be reaching out to an expert that understands the differences between cruise A and cruise B," Mooneyham said. "But if you know exactly what you want, that's a time where you might only be looking at, you know, 'What's the best value for me?'"

However, Hendrix said the company has more than 1,000 Costco Travel employees with experts in various focus areas, including cruises, Hawaii and Europe.

But travelers may not always find what they are looking for. Hendrix said Costco only offers car rentals with Avis, Alamo, Budget and Enterprise, for example, and it has a limited selection of hotels and hotel brands. Certain destinations may also not be available for their vacation package and build-your-own-trip options.

Can you book flights with Costco Travel?

"Flights are available as part of our vacation packages or our build-your-own options," Hendrix said. However, travelers cannot currently purchase flights alone through Costco Travel.

Do you have to be a Costco member to use Costco Travel?

Yes. Travelers must be active Costco members to use the service. Depending on the tier, Costco memberships cost between $60 and $120 per year – before any applicable sales tax – according to its website .

"Many of our programs offer Costco Travel members an exclusive Costco Shop Card for their travel purchase, which they receive once their travel is completed, and can be used in the warehouse or online at Costco.com," Hendrix added.

Costco Executive members also get an annual 2% reward – up to $1,000 – on qualifying purchases made through Costco Travel.

Should you buy travel insurance through a cruise line?: Maybe not, experts say

Is Costco Travel a good deal?

Some travelers have found significant savings using the service. Ayers booked a 2022 trip to Spain with Costco Travel after pricing the trip out themselves.

"The cost for just the airline tickets would have been the cost for the entire Costco package," he said, which included flights, hotels and more.

White also noted that resort fees  have always been included when she has booked through the service. When possible, Hendrix said Costco Travel's buyers work to include those fees "or negotiate the waiving of those fees."

And despite its budget-friendly reputation, White has booked luxury hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton through the service.

When she doesn't book with Costco, she said it's usually just because they don't have what she's looking for. "But they do have an amazing selection," White said.

I’m a Shopping Writer, and These Are the 17 Travel Items I’m Buying From Amazon’s St. Patrick’s Day Sale

I’m feeling lucky to have spotted major sales on Reebok sneakers, Sony headphones, Apple AirTags, and more.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

As a shopping writer, I’ll admit that I will take any excuse to add new items to my cart. So, when I saw that Amazon had started their Big Spring Sale discounts early (and just in time for St. Patrick’s Day weekend), I couldn’t resist doing a scan of the site to find the best deals to shop before they sell out.

Purchasing clothes is one of my favorite types of shopping to do, but with so many exciting trips on the horizon, travel accessories are also at the top of my list for the season. If you’ve been looking for some shopping inspiration to capitalize on the Amazon deals, I’ve rounded up my top 17 on-sale must-haves that you’ll feel good about snagging this weekend. Whether you’ve been on the market for a new pair of white sneakers , some reliable noise-canceling headphones , or even a new checked bag , Amazon has it all, and with prices starting as low as $13.

Travelpro Maxlite Air Hardside Expandable Medium Checked Luggage

I’ve been on the lookout for a new checked bag for a while, and now that I have several trips right around the corner, the need for a fresh piece of luggage just became slightly more urgent. Seeing as Travelpro bags are famously loved by flight attendants , this lightweight yet incredibly durable suitcase immediately caught my eye — in large part due to its under-$200 price tag. However, its sturdy polycarbonate shell is another major selling point as it is strong enough to withstand being tossed around while displaying minimal scuffs, and the bag is even designed to expand up to 2 additional inches for maximum packing space. In short, it’s perfect for an overpacker like me.

Merrell Women’s Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Boots

Hiking is one of my favorite springtime activities, and with several designated trips planned for the year, it’s time for me to invest in a new pair of boots to take on the trails. Seeing as I was named after the brand, it’s only natural that the Merrell Moab 3 boots would be at the top of my list to shop for — and right now, they’re even on sale for a staggering 46 percent off as we head into the holiday weekend. The waterproof exterior is essential for trekking across muddy or slushy terrain (which I’m expecting to run into during a trip to Norway later this year), and they’re even made with uniquely supportive insoles that will cushion my feet with every step.

Zesica Women’s Bohemian Flowy Midi Dress

I’m a dress gal through and through, and this darling prairie frock is the perfect addition to my spring wardrobe as I continue my quest to never wear another pair of shorts in my lifetime. The midi length of this dress is long enough to comfortably travel in or wear during a day of sightseeing without feeling restricted by a too-short hem, while the puff sleeves add stunning detail to this vacation-ready dress. I can already picture myself wearing it while frolicking around in New York City this spring, so it’s sure to become one of the most reached-for pieces in my closet when packing to travel, as well.

Bagail Compression Packing Cubes

The day that I began storing my clothing in packing cubes while traveling was the day that my experience changed for the better, and I truly believe that compression cubes are exactly what I need to make even more space in my bag. This compact set from Bagail has earned more than 14,500 five-star ratings at Amazon which assures me that they’re worth the investment, and with four different sizes in each set, I’ll have no trouble stowing away everything from my bulkiest sweaters to delicate undergarments with ease. Best of all, they’re on sale for a mere $20 right now, meaning that each bag is just $5.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones

After recently enduring a flight alongside the world’s chattiest seatmate, I’ve decided that it’s long past time to invest in a pair of noise-canceling headphones to hopefully make myself appear just slightly less approachable. Right now, this wireless pair from Sony is on sale for $100 off and boasts an impressive 30-hour battery life so I can enjoy my carefully crafted playlist even throughout an hours-long layover. Plus, they’re well-cushioned for optimal comfort, while a 10-minute charge nets an additional five hours of listening time, so I’ll never be stuck listening to unwanted chattering ever again.

Vecave Carry-On Backpack

My beloved travel backpack is unfortunately on its last leg, meaning that I need to start taking stock of my options ahead of my next trip. This spacious and durable bag from Vecave instantly caught my eye seeing as it unzips like a suitcase, offering a more organized packing experience while still allowing me to head through the airport with my hands free. A waterproof exterior will keep my belongings protected against the inevitable spring showers ahead, while it’s also small enough to slide under the seat of most commercial airlines. Not to mention that it features a built-in wet bag to store dirty laundry while you’re on the go, making the unpacking process easier than ever.

Libin Women’s Lightweight Hiking Pants

I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many comfy pants in your wardrobe, which is why these Libin hiking joggers are calling my name this weekend. Currently sitting at just $35, these lightweight outdoor pants will make the perfect addition to my suitcase during my Norway excursion later this year, and the water-resistant, breathable material only further solidifies their spot in my closet in the meantime. An elastic waistband promises full-day comfort (which means that they can also be worn as a part of your new favorite travel outfit), and they even come in 13 colorful and neutral shades (which is important to note if you’re anything like me and want to snag multiple colors).

Westbronco Fanny Pack

At just $13, I would be remiss not to add this surprisingly spacious belt bag to my shopping cart for the long weekend — especially seeing as it’s the ideal place to store all of my travel essentials while trekking through the airport. A subtle pocket at the back of the pouch is secure enough to hold onto my passport safely, while the primary compartment is large enough for a phone, wallet, keys, and other important documents. With 29 spring-ready colors to choose from, it’s safe to say that my airport look is about to get a major upgrade.

Teva Women’s Original Universal Sandals

I’m a shameless sandal collector, and it’s long overdue that I add a pair of traditional Tevas to my closet. Thankfully, the decision was made even easier by the fact that certain colors are currently on sale for as little as $35 at Amazon. These multi-functional sandals are made with cushy and contoured EVA footbeds that will effectively make every step feel like walking on a cloud, while hook and loop closures keep them firmly on my feet during walking tours, travel days, and more. And with more than 18,200 five-star ratings, it’s safe to say these sandals will never go out of style.

Dokotoo Women’s Corduroy Button-Down Shirt

Layering is the name of the game when it comes to traveling during the spring, and this casual corduroy shirt from Dokotoo is positioned to become the most valuable item in my closet this season. The simple design of the shirt means it will be easy to pair with nearly every pant option I already have tucked away in my drawers, plus it’s easy to slide on and off in accordance with the ever-changing temperature of airplane cabins. Honestly, at just $30, I’m about to pick up more than one of the 37 available colors.

Bcozzy Neck Pillow

Over the years, I’ve learned that if I want to get any sleep while traveling, I need to have a sturdy neck pillow in tow that will keep my head from bobbing around while I’m dozing. My current pillow is a flimsy little thing that I picked up at the last minute in the airport several years ago, which means that it’s certainly time for an upgrade, and this Bcozzy option fits the bill. The wrapable design will provide exceptional support for my head, neck, and chin during the longest of flights, plus it’s available in several different sizes so, rest assured, I’ll be able to find my perfect fit. Best of all, this memory foam pillow is completely machine washable.

Altra Women’s Rivera 3 Running Shoes

While running shoes are excellent for, well, running, they’re also an incredibly important piece of any good packing list for active travelers. These sleek and highly-cushioned sneakers from Altra caught my attention thanks to their thoughtful design that absorbs impact and makes for a comfier day of sightseeing, so I know that these sneakers will have two roles throughout my trip: outfitting walking tours and my morning jog. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they’re on sale for a whopping 48 percent off right now.

S-Zone Carry-On Weekender Bag

There are certain scenarios in which it doesn’t make sense to bring a full rolling suitcase on your vacation, and a weekend getaway is one of them. So, that’s exactly why I’ve been contemplating snatching up the S-Zone Carry-On Weekender Bag, and now that it’s on sale for 44 percent off, I’m sold. The lightweight design makes it easy to pack to the brim without weighing me down, while leather detailing alongside sturdy rivets add simple touches that ensure this bag is built to last for years to come. Plus, it’s the perfect size to bring along as your carry-on tote if you prefer a weekender to a rolling bag in general.

Apple AirTag

If I’m going to check a bag, you can rest assured that I will not do so unless there’s an Apple AirTag firmly tucked inside. Right now, the shopper-loved device is on sale at Amazon for a mere $24 (unfortunately the four-pack is currently out of stock), and is the simplest way to maintain peace of mind that you'll always know where your belongings are — even from your flight. Not to mention that when you’re not traveling with your AirTag, you can simply place it inside of your favorite purse or onto your key ring to make sure that your belongings will never go missing for long.

Reebok Women’s Club C 85 Vintage Walking Shoes

You can never go wrong with adding a solid white sneaker to your repertoire, and my pick for spring is the Reebok Women’s Club C 85 shoes, which are now on sale for $70 and are guaranteed to add an effortlessly cool air to any outfit you pair them with. The leather exterior is durable enough to wear during long walking days without getting run down, while supportive midsoles are built to absorb shock for a more comfortable day spent on your feet. Trends may come and go, but these white shoes will be in style forever.

Peak Gear Nylon Crossbody Purse

I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t afraid of being pickpocketed while traveling, and while I can’t entirely eliminate that threat, an anti-theft purse will certainly provide me with some peace of mind. This nylon bag from Peak Gear is made with several sneaky, spacious pockets to safely store my essentials, while a handy RFID-blocking pocket is the ideal spot for my cards and ID to keep electronic theft at bay. Best of all, the crossbody design is a surefire way to keep the bag safely attached to my body.

Nfsion Women’s Casual Sleeveless Jumpsuit

It’s difficult to strike the balance between comfort and style when getting dressed for the airport, but that’s exactly why this stunning jumpsuit from Nfision is a must-buy during this long weekend sale. The flowing, relaxed fit will never leave me feeling restricted after long hours of sitting, however, the sleek and flattering fit of this piece means that it can be easily dressed up or down, upping its value in my suitcase. It’s an excellent base layer for spring under cozy sweaters and lightweight jackets, and after seeing that there are 15 colors to choose from, I may just have to snatch up more than one while they’re on sale for $25.

Expedia to cut about 1,500 jobs globally amid moderating travel demand

O nline travel platform Expedia (EXPE.O) said on Monday it was cutting about 1,500 jobs globally, or about 9 per cent of its total workforce, as part of its “organizational and technological transformation”.

The restructuring comes after Expedia warned earlier this month that revenue would moderate in 2024 as air ticket prices drop and said CEO Peter Kern was stepping down.

“The business continues to evaluate the appropriate allocation of resources to ensure the most important work continues to be prioritized,” an Expedia Group spokesperson said.

Travel companies are tempering expectations for 2024, a sign that demand is expected to grow more slowly this year.

Last week, Booking Holdings (BKNG.O) forecast slower first quarter and full-year growth in bookings as US travel demand normalizes.

Total pre-tax charges and cash expenditures associated with the restructuring actions are expected to be between $80 million and $100 million, Expedia said.

Shares of the company were up marginally in aftermarket trading.
