This is an underrated and under-reviewed experience. On a practical level, it's transportation, but it's also a scenic byway across Catalina Island - probably than 1% of Catalina visitors ever journey across the Island by Safari Bus. The Safari Bus, which can be anything from an 8-passenger van to a "retired" school bus will take you on an approx. 2-hour journey between Avalon and Two Harbors (which is approx. 14 miles as the crow flies, but much longer via windy roads.) So a huge percentage (like 75% or more of the Island is owned by the Catalina Conservancy and is protected from new development. The Safari Bus is the only way I know that you can visit the "interior" (aka Conservancy property) without obtaining a permit (hikers and other can obtain permits for a modest fee in either Avalon or Two Harbors.) Some of the windy roads on the Island are hairpin turns with little or no road edge and no guardrail. Rest assured that your drivers are natives who could probably drive the road with their eyes closed (they don't) but if you have anyone really skittish about heights, put them in the middle seat :) Along your route, you are very likely to see the bison (non-native, but now so iconic that they remain, albeit on birth control :) and the native Catalina fox (very small and VERY cute.) Most of the vans/buses will not have A/C, and their shocks are pretty worn. The roads are just as worn, so be prepared for a pretty bumpy ride. You'll pretty much stay under 25 mph, though. The bus runs Avalon-Two Harbors approx. 1-4 times a day, with a lot of runs in the peak season (late June - Labor Day), and fewer in the shoulder season (spring/fall) and fewer still in winter. It's best to make reservations if it's critical to take the bus. In the summer, buses are regularly full and you might miss out. You can make reservations online through the Santa Catalina Island Company website (they operate most of the touristy things on the Island) or at the kiosk in Avalon, or the check-in office in Two Harbors. The website is (currently) weird. (many things on the Island are!) You have to book each leg separately. Know that the legs are 1) Avalon, 2) Blackjack/Airport, 3) Little Harbor and 4) Two Harbors (or the reverse if traveling the other direction) and you'll figure out which leg(s) to book. From Avalon, you ride about 45 minutes to the Catalina Airport. Blackjack campground is nearby - if there are campers to be picked up/dropped off, they'll stop here briefly, too (not very common, because Blackjack doesn't have much shade and is not close to the water. It's mostly a stopping point for those hiking the Trans Catalina Trail.) You don't usually take the same van/bus all the way. One van does the Avalon-Airport leg and another does the Airport-Two Harbors leg. You will disembark at the Airport and have a 20-30 minute wait for the next van. There's a counter service grill restaurant and a gift shop. If you want food, order it right away so that it's ready before you depart. There's some nice seating outside with a great view. The second van will take you from the Airport to Two Harbors and will usually stop at Little Harbor on the way. The second leg is about 30-45 minutes. Little Harbor is beautiful, remote beach camping on the west side of the Island (see my separate review.) Nothing but firewood and water can be obtained there, so the Safari Bus driver may stop in Little Harbor to pick up passengers, to drop something off to campers, or to take reservations from them (I don't think any cell phones work here.) Little Harbor is especially gorgeous after the Spring rains - it's lush and green and stunning. P.S. There's a separate service that will deliver kayaks and other gear to you in Little Harbor. Lastly, the Safari Bus has some limits on gear (I think it's two items per person, not including a small personal item.) In the summer, they are more likely to be strict about this due to sold-out trips. It's best to consolidate your gear as much as possible. Lastly, it's nice to tip your driver(s). Bring some cash for two drivers/each leg. Enjoy!

One option between Avalon, the Airport, Blackjack, Little Harbor & Two Harbors (but if few riders, it's an airport shuttle van.)

We went to Catalina in early Feb. They don't have the tour that shows the bison, so we settled for the Safari tour. The information showed bison and fox...um, no. They are not active at this time of year so all we saw was the same view for two hours. There were some pretty locations, but not worth the $80 ticket. Add to it the fact that the vehicle is a converted military vehicle. The seats have no cushions and the road is rough. By the end of the tour my back and neck ached. And then there was the tour guide, who belched and coughed into the open mike and had no personality. Honestly a disappointment from all angles.

First of all, don't get fooled by the pictures on fliers and brochures! All colorful scenery and nice "enclosed" bus? Ha! You know... I should have known better as a Californian for more than 25 years. There is no such place in Southern California that is green at all! Let me start with bus. The day I visited, Nov 15th 2016, temperature hit above 90s in inland. In the Catalina Island, it was well above 85. I was expecting a tour bus with windows and nice cool AC as seen on their brochures. Instead, this bus without any windows arrived and I already knew this isn't going to be nice. Well... what the heck, my wife and I got on and up we go to the airport. Ride was ok, good thing it wasn't too hot but worse part is yet to come. As soon as we got on unpaved road, all the dust started to smolder in to bus. Are you freaking serious?! Maybe driver didn't care since all the dust was getting in to bus somewhere middle part to back of the bus. And the tour guide/driver... (that's another story) was talking to visitors as if that's nothing. To make short, I had dust piled on all over the body. Entire unpaved road, which is about 60% of the trip, I had to cover my nose with my jacket. Some part of the road, dust was so severe that I couldn't even open my eyes! And if there are any cars passes by or goes in front of the tour bus... it gets worse... The guide/driver. I forgot his name but he was African/American who seemed very enthusiastic. That's good... until certain point. For my personal view of a guide, a guide should be professional and of course it would be plus if a guide is also funny too! He was funny for the first 5 to 10 mins. After that his enthusiastic laughing started to annoy. I couldn't understand why he was laughing out of nowhere. And to you sir, I specifically talked to you regarding the bus that has windows. You said I will be cooked in that enclosed bus. I would have rather be cooked than breathing in all that dust! So... over 2 hours or so, all I got was dust, 2 buffalo and some view. Maybe it used to be more green during raining season. Oh yeah, one more thing about dust. So, after that day, we returned to home in inland. My wife showered and told me that there was this brown water running down while water was running down over her hair... Maybe I should have done the Zipline... -_-

This is all I got after all the dust... priceless..

Have you ever been on any safari which you won't be able to see any wild animal. Total rip off. Don't waste your money!!! Just some ocean view and that's it. Boring tour. Just rent a golf cart which is 10 times better than this rip off tour!!! Guys believe me, don't get this tour!!!!! It is rip off!!!!!

We took the Skyline Bus Tour with Discovery Tours. The bus tour was great. We had an excellent but driver...so, I don't need to use the name Paul. I think his name was Steve. He is an excellent driver. I wish we could have spent more time at the airport. We barely had a snack and then it was time to go. We had a nice cashier at the store. He said it was a beautiful drive to work up the mountain everyday instead of highway traffic. Great cookies!!! Great views throughout the entire tour...scary mountain roads, lol.

Photo of Ida J.

So far it has been a nightmare and we haven't been on the darn bus yet... we called and booked it by phone for the price of $115 for 2. They told us to go to mini golf place. We went there and the kid who I guess started yesterday said it isn't the case place. So we walked back to the beach again to info center and they said that isn't true and the golf place has the tickets. Bare in mind we have hiking and camping material so like 40-50 pound on our backs walking back and forth. The kid said that's odd and this isn't the place and we asked him if he can find out for us and he said he cant. His coworker walked in then and asked if we need help. Then she printed and handed us our tickets in 2 secs. Like if you are charging 100 bucks for a crappy bus ride, atleast train your staff?!

Photo of Paul L.

Vacation spoiler. No even a real safari. Go ahead if you want to waste $$$ and ride in bumpy bus for 2 hours to the airport and back. You'll see couple of buffalos if you're lucky.

Photo of Monique M.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!! The worst idea I may have ever had. They should just call it a site seeing tour. Better off renting a golf cart and checking out the inland on your own. Not worth over $300 that we paid. We took a big L on this one.

Photo of Emily B.

The Safari Bus is the only motorized means of transporting you and your gear out of the booze soaked melee of Avalon and into the gorgeous tranquility of the Catalina "interior" to hike, camp, and beach on your own schedule. It runs from Avalon to Blackjack to Airport-in-the-Sky to Little Harbor to Two Harbors and back (with a bus change at the airport). But we had the darndest time trying to get tickets from Avalon to Little Harbor and back. The website made us book each leg of the trip separately, so we thought it would be easier to book by phone. First mistake. The website's phone number goes to a recording and then to the Hotel Atwater. However, no one at the Atwater could help us book tickets. They said we could buy tickets on midnight of the day we want to travel. So at MIDNIGHT we called and they said to call back at 6am. At 6am they said the bus was sold out!! WTF!! Trying to find a live person to help us was equally frustrating. The kiosk that says Safari Bus in the tour plaza was closed, and the lady at the Discovery Tours kiosk on the pier said she didn't know the bus route and couldn't help us because she didn't handle Safari bus ticket sales. What? Really?? The website says you do!! We had to track down the personal cell numbers of the bus operators before we could reserve tickets! To avoid this nightmare, just buy your tickets online or at, of all places, the mini golf kiosk (in tour plaza). You will need yellow print out tickets to board the bus. You can buy them in advance or day of - it seemed like there are usually a few seats still available for day-of arrivals even on the busier holiday weekends. The prices are steep though. I think we paid $65/person for our trip. If you run into trouble or have any questions, call this number for help: 310-510-4205. All that said, everything went smoothly on the day of our trip. The bus leaves from tour plaza. It sticks to the schedule-10am departure from Avalon, 4pm departure from Two Harbors (4:30 from Little Harbor). The drivers are great. They stopped for bison so folks could take pictures and answered our questions. Nahtia warned us that the ride from the airport to Little Harbor was dusty, bumpy, and twisty (which it is - you're in an old school bus on a dirt road after all), but I don't think anyone on the bus thought the ride was unpleasant. I saw two different drivers go the extra mile to make the backpacking/hiking experience just a little more pleasant for Safari bus riders. Great to know the Safari Bus has your back in the Catalina wilds. I just hope they get better signage and put more information on the website to guarantee a great adventure for all.

How the Heck?!? Getting to the Start and End of the Trans-Catalina Trail

by Paty | Mar 13, 2020 | Trans-Catalina Trail , West Coast | 2 comments

catalina safari bus schedule

How do I get to and from the trailhead? That’s often one of the very first questions hikers have to resolve when planning a thru-hike.

Sometimes you get lucky. Perhaps there’s a trail organization operating a local shuttle service to/from the trail for a small fee. Or maybe you can convince friends, family members, or a generous trail angel to give you a ride. But, all those tried and true transportation methods go out the window when you’re hiking a trail on a remote island.

Overview of the Trans-Catalina Trail

Let’s start with the basics. The Trans-Catalina Trail (or TCT) is a 38.5 mile point-to-point trail located on Santa Catalina island, approximately 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. The eastern terminus of the trail is in the island’s main town of Avalon, and the western terminus is in Two Harbors – the island’s only other town.

The vast majority of visitors to Santa Catalina Island never venture beyond the seaside town of Avalon. It’s the tourist hub of the island. Close to 99% of the restaurants, hotel accommodations, shopping, and other activities are located in Avalon. It’s also the port where the majority of the ferries and cruise ships will drop their passengers.

The only other town on Santa Catalina Island is the village of Two Harbors. Located at the is narrow isthmus of the island, Two Harbors is home to fewer than 300 residents. So it’s tiny by pretty much any standard.

Two Harbors is has very limited amenities, including a small general store, one seasonal restaurant, and a single B&B. It’s much quieter than the town of Avalon, and it caterers more to the sailing crowd and a few seasonal summer camps on the west end of the island.

catalina safari bus schedule

Catalina Island’s unique geography creates several novel issues for hikers who want to hike the entire TCT. But, before we cover them in detail, let’s address some basic planning considerations that may impact your hiking agenda.

  • What direction do you intend to hike? Most TCT hikers begin in Avalon and hike toward Two Harbors. But, this isn’t the only option available – or even the best one for every hiker hoping to tackle the trail. There are one-way hikes, yo-yo hikes, and reverse direction hikes. If you want to know more about this subject, check out my blog discussing The Absolute Best Trans-Catalina Trail Hiking Itineraries .
  • What time of year do you intend to hike? Although Catalina Island is accessible and lovely all year round, the transportation options and amenities tend to dwindle in the off-season. So remember, some options discussed below only exist during the peak tourist season.
  • What is your budget? Most of us aren’t independently wealthy, so cost is always a major consideration when planning a thru-hike. Your transportation costs can vary significantly based on the time of year you hike and the size of your group. Options that seem completely reasonable for a bunch of hikers splitting the cost, might seem ridiculously expensive if you’re a solo hiker absorbing the entire burden.

catalina safari bus schedule

Key Transportation Issues

Once you’ve figured out some of these hiking basics, it’s time to plan how you’ll to get to and from each terminus of the TCT.

Avalon is not a difficult town to get to. Ferries operate between Southern California and Santa Catalina Island every day of the year. The Catalina Express ferries run from three ports along the coast (Dana Point, Long Beach, and San Pedro), and the ride to Avalon only takes about an hour. The Catalina Flyer also runs ferries from from Newport Beach out to Avalon, with a similar travel time.

But, this only helps you get to one end of the trail. What do you do when you get to the other end?

As mentioned above, Two Harbors doesn’t have the same amenities and infrastructure as Avalon. The demand to visit Two Harbors isn’t very high, so the ferry companies don’t focus their efforts there. As a result, there is only one ferry option that will get you to/from this terminus.

The Catalina Express runs the sole ferry route to Two Harbors, and it departs from the port in San Pedro. This ferry consistently runs twice a day, with one morning ferry and one mid-afternoon ferry. Beware though, if you plan to hike between January and early April, because the San Pedro ferry curtails its schedule. It doesn’t operate to Avalon or Two Harbors at all on Tuesdays or Thursdays during this low-season period.

Don’t fret though. There are still several other options if the San Pedro-Two Harbors ferry doesn’t fit into your schedule or plans. Hikers can use local transportation to shuttle them between Avalon and Two Harbors once they arrive on the island. Just be mindful that this method will take a fair amount of prior planning.

Traveling between the two towns isn’t an easy (or cheap) prospect. Most of the locals who live on Santa Catalina Island stay in and around Avalon, and they tend to get around by walking or via golf carts. There aren’t any rental car agencies catering to tourists, and there’s no Uber and no Lyft on the island either.

Despite these obstacles, there are five great alternatives to get you to and from each terminus of the TCT. So without further ado, let’s get to them!

catalina safari bus schedule

Getting to each Terminus of the TCT

The cheap option – the san pedro ferry.

Details: The least expensive way to get to each terminus of the TCT is to use the port of San Pedro an your point of embarkation and return. While their schedule isn’t as flexible as some of the other ferry options, the San Pedro ferry automatically stops at each terminus of the trail. This means you won’t have to hassle with any on-island transportation to get you where you want to go. You simply need to purchase a one-way ticket between San Pedro and Avalon and a second one-way ferry ticket between San Pedro and Two Harbors. It’s definitely worth the time and effort to make advance reservations though, as this ferry often fill up.

Cost: $74.50 per person for two one-way ferry tickets.

Who it’s best for: This option is ideal for solo hikers and those on a tight budget. Just remember that the San Pedro doesn’t run on Tuesdays/Thursdays between January and early April.

Reservations: Book your passage on the Catalina Express, by clicking HERE .

catalina safari bus schedule

The Expensive Option – Taxi between Two Harbors and Avalon

Details: One of the more common ways to get between each terminus of the TCT is by hiring a taxi to travel between Two Harbors and Avalon. This option provides you with maximum flexibility to take any ferry to Avalon. Then once you complete the TCT in Two Harbors, you can use the taxi to ride back to Avalon and catch your return ferry. Just know, there’s only one taxi company serving the interior of the island, so you can’t shop around for fares. Also, the travel time for the 21-mile drive between Two Harbors and Avalon is approximately 80 minutes.

Cost: $221 (plus gratuities) for a one-way taxi between Avalon and Two Harbors. All taxis on Santa Catalina Island are large white 7-passenger vans, and charge a flat rate, regardless of the number of passengers. ( Don’t forget, you’ll also need to purchase a roundtrip ferry ticket to/from Avalon, which will cost $70-$76, depending which port you use. )

Reservations: To charter a taxi to/from the interior of the island, hikers can call the taxi dispatch at 310-510-0025 or book on online HERE . Advance coordination is strongly recommended.

Who it’s best for: This option is ideal for groups of hikers who can split the fare to keep costs down. The taxi company charges a flat rate whether you are a single hiker or completely fill the van with seven hikers and their gear.

catalina safari bus schedule

The Shuttle Option – Safari Bus & Wildlands Express

Details: If you’re hiking in the peak season and your budget doesn’t accommodate a taxi ride between Two Harbors and Avalon, don’t worry. There’s a cheaper on-island option out there. Catalina Island has multiple shuttle routes that travel the island for a pretty reasonable fare, provided you have the patience to time them right.

  • The Catalina Safari Bus runs between Two Harbors and Airport in the Sky. This shuttle runs twice daily during the peak visitor season and takes about 30 minutes.
  • Once you get to the airport, the Wildlands Express Bus can take you the rest of the way. This daily shuttle bus runs between the Airport in the Sky and Avalon 5-6 times each day, and operates year-round.

Cost: $28.75 total for the two shuttle buses. The one-way shuttle bus ride between Two Harbors and the Airport costs $11.75, and a one-way shuttle bus ride between the Airport and Avalon costs $17. ( Don’t forget, you’ll also need to purchase a roundtrip ferry ticket to/from Avalon, which will cost and additional $70-$76, depending which port you use. )

Reservations: Advance reservations are STRONGLY recommended. More information about the shuttles can be found one the airport’s webpage located HERE . You can also find the schedule for the Wildlands Express shuttle on the Catalina Island Conservancy page located HERE .

Who it’s best for: This option is really only feasible for late spring and summer hikers because the Safari Bus only runs the route to between the Airport and Two Harbors seasonally.

The Long Option – Plan an extended or yo-yo hike

Details: One way to avoid the logistical hurdle of Two Harbors is to treat it as just one more waypoint. There’s no reason your TCT hike must end at mile 38.5. You can hike the entire TCT from Avalon to Two Harbors, then continue back toward Avalon using one of my 3 yo-yo itineraries . These hikes allow you to see the majority of the trail from both directions (eastbound and westbound) and eliminate the need for any additional transportation other than the ferry to get on the island. Of course, there’s no need to do a true yo-yo hike (i.e.,hike the entire length of the trail in both directions). From the trail’s western terminus in Two Harbors, you can opt to just continue 5.1 more miles back to Little Harbor or 12 miles back to the Airport in the Sky, and then grab the Wildlands Express Shuttle back to Avalon from either location.

Cost: None, if you begin/end your hike in Avalon. However, if you opt to end in Little Harbor, a one-way shuttle ticket back to Avalon will cost $34. And, if you opt to end at the Airport in the Sky, a one-way ticket will cost $17. ( Don’t forget, you’ll also need to purchase a roundtrip ferry ticket to/from Avalon, which will cost and additional $70-$76, depending which port you use. )

Reservations: If you take the Wildlands Express shuttle from Little Harbor or the airport, their phone number and schedule can be found HERE .

Who it’s best for: This option is ideal for anyone who wants to turn their TCT thru-hike into a longer adventure or see the island from both directions.

The Water Option – The Cyclone

Details: If you’re hiking the TCT in the peak season and want to add an extra bit of adventure to your trip, there’s an another memorable way to get between Two Harbors and Avalon. The Catalina Island Co. runs a high-speed boat along the Catalina coastline connecting these the two towns. The Cyclone is actually a sightseeing activity for tourists who want to visit Two Harbors as part of a day trip. While it’s primarily geared toward passengers with some minimal beach gear, the company does allow passengers to bring oversized luggage on board for a small fee (subject to the space and approval of the crew).

Cost: $32.10 for one-way general admission ticket on the Cyclone, plus $3 fee for oversize baggage. ( Don’t forget, you’ll also need to purchase a roundtrip ferry ticket to/from Avalon, which will cost $70-$76, depending which port you use. )

Reservations: To make a reservation on the Cyclone, or get more information about this high-speed boat adventure, check out their website HERE .

Who it’s best for: This option is best for peak-season hikers who are willing to make advance reservations, and who don’t have any health issues such as high blood pressure, neck or back issues, or motion sickness. Note: unlike some of the other options above, bad weather may cause delays and cancellations of these boat tours.

Final Thoughts

Now that you have a five options of how to get to and from each terminus of the TCT, here’s a few final things you should keep in mind about this island trek.

  • Plan in advance . Regardless of what time of year you plan to hike the TCT, the availability of these resources is constantly changing. In the peak summer season, demand is high, so it’s critical to make advance shuttle/taxi reservations. Similarly, in the off-season, demand may be so low that some of the shuttles aren’t running. Contacting the provider to make reservations in advance will ensure you aren’t stuck.
  • Give yourself extra time. When planning your transportation, remember that vehicles on Catalina don’t travel fast. The roads on the interior of island are rudimentary dirt roads and traveling between Two Harbors and Avalon will probably take longer than you think. Moreover, if bison decide to cross or stop on the road, you may be delayed while waiting for them to amble along. Give yourself at least an extra 30-60 minute buffer to get to Avalon before your ferry departs for the mainland.
  • It’s definitely worth it. Remember, if this process was simple, then everyone would do it. The logistics of planning a TCT thru-hike can be daunting, but all the extra preparation is going to scare off a lot of prospective hikers. You’ll appreciate your efforts all the more when you’re out on the trail enjoying the serenity and views without the crowds.

Can you please tell me how treacherous or challenging the road is from Two Harbors to Avalon? How fast do the vehicles travel on the dirt roads? Thank you!

Paty

I stuck to the Trans-Catalina Trail itself, which only touches the island’s road a few brief times, so I can’t speak to how challenging the road is to hike/walk if you want to take the road the entire way from Two Harbors to Avalon. I would suggest reaching out to the folks at the Trans-Catalina Trail Conservancy.

As for vehicles, I only saw one and it was a one of the pink Jeep tours so it was going nice and slow while it was looking for bison to point out to the patrons.

We are two adults, 3 kids, camping at Little Harbor in April. A couple of questions:

2) Would it be best to go in and out of Two Harbors or Avalon?

3) Is firewood for sale at the campsite?

' class=

http://www.catalinatransportationservices.com/

<<2) Would it be best to go in and out of Two Harbors or Avalon?>> Well, Little Harbor is a lot closer to Two Harbors (about 7 miles) but it would depend on the schedule of the boats to Two Harbors and the Safari Bus schedule.

<<3) Is firewood for sale at the campsite?>> No, I do not remember seeing anyone selling anything out at Little Harbor (we spent our honeymoon there on a sailboat and have camped there a handful of times). I think your best bet will be to buy supplies at either Avalon or Two Harbors before making the trip. But you might want to double check in case things have changed in the last several years.

SEARCH FOR AMERICAN BISON IN THE CATALINA OUTBACK

Climb aboard an open-air biofuel Hummer and go in search of American bison on this exciting expedition into Catalina’s rugged interior. Catalina’s American bison, sometimes referred to as buffalo, are descendants of a small herd left on the island by a movie crew in the 1920s. Today the Catalina Island Conservancy maintains Catalina's American bison herd at about 150 to protect both the bison and the island’s landscape.

The popular Bison Expedition is a unique experience you’ll only find on Catalina Island. This 2-hour 4-wheeling adventure offers you an excellent opportunity to see American bison in the wild as you journey through favorite grazing grounds of these majestic animals, which were named the national mammal of the United States in 2016.

While you keep your eyes peeled for Catalina's American bison grazing on the hillsides, your guide will share interesting facts about Catalina's history, flora and fauna as you journey through historic Middle Ranch and up rugged Cape Canyon to a scenic overlook on Black Jack Mountain. Then it’s down the original 19th-century stagecoach route, which offers sweeping views of the majestic Catalina coast and beautiful blue Pacific all the way back to Avalon.
