Gunma Safari Park

Gunma Safari Park

African style safari in a picturesque mountainside

Hollie Mantle

Country roads, busy intersections, shopping centers; everywhere bright, zebra-striped posters burn into your retinas and for those who don’t read Japanese, pose the big question: “what on Earth...?”

For once, these eye catching signs don’t signal the nearest Pachinko parlor, but instead Gunma’s own slice of African style safari.

I’ll admit, I was dubious. Tucked into an incredibly picturesque mountainside, I half expected it to be a glorified petting zoo playing home to rabbits and a few stray llamas. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Not only is this a safari tour, but the park allows the option for driving your own vehicle through the enclosures, which are anything but enclosed and in fact feel very much like you’ve walked into a David Attenborough style TV show. The surroundings are startlingly natural and almost make you feel discourteous for daring to disturb the animals in their homes.

They are, however, utterly indifferent to your presence, continuing on with their daily routines with little or no acknowledgement of the wonder they are inspiring. Often you will be sat for a few minutes at a time, waiting for a tiger to finish licking his paws before moving on to let you pass.

Lions, rhinos and enormous battling bears rear up in front of your car, only a window pane’s distance away. (Although I would advice you don’t attempt to poke out a sneaky hand or finger. Not because the animals will bite your hand off, but because the park keepers will bite your head off and soon have you winding the window back up, head hung in shame like a scolded child.)

About half way through the park tour you can park up, get out of the car and have a walk around. It is here that the astoundingly beautiful white tigers can be seen. Often omitted from foreign zoos, for 500 yen you can buy a stick of meat and feed them yourself, getting so close as to risk the tiger mistaking your finger for a chicken yakitori stick.

If you don’t drive a beat-up Toyota, or dislike the idea of risking damage to your own car, then there is always the option of riding one of the park tour buses. Shaped, colored, and fitted out like a giant sized lion or zebra, these incredibly attractive buses will only cost you an extra 500 yen. Alternatively, you can rent one of the zebra striped safari tour cars for an extra 2000 yen on top of the entrance fee.

Wolves, meerkats, leopards, monkeys, the appeal is not only in the sheer amount of animals who inhabit this park but in the proximity it offers. In a sense I wasn’t wrong when I envisioned a petting zoo. It’s simply that at this petting zoo instead of getting your hand licked by a friendly goat, you’ll be getting it back on ice as you rush to A+E. Giant centipedes lurking in your kitchen cupboard aside, it’s not often you get the chance to be side by side some of the world’s deadliest creatures in Japan, making this a day trip you definitely want to pencil on to the calendar.

Gunma Safari Park: Take a Safari Without Leaving Japan

Matéria Gunma Safari Park

Discover the Gunma Safari Park

Located in tomioka the park is one of the most famous attractions in the region of Gunma . There are more than 100 species of animals from Asia, Africa and other parts of Japan. At the gunma safari the animals roam freely, as if they were in their natural habitat. You will see several specimens that you never thought you would find in Japan. Some of them are: lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, tigers, wolves, bears and different birds, for example.

Visiting the park is an all-day program. In this sense, be sure to visit the amusement park adjacent to the complex, as restaurants and roller coasters make the tour even more complete.

Matéria Gunma Safari Park

How to visit the park

The park is divided into different areas. A Walking Safari Zone , is where you can walk, get closer to some wild animals and even feed them. There is also the Forest of Wolves , a Bird Zone and Small Farm (Little Farm) , where pony riding is allowed.

The cool thing is that it is possible to go on safari with your own car. However, if you prefer, you can choose to use a bus from the park, specific to travel between the animals. However, some considerations: if you use your own vehicle, it is worth renting an audio guide (in English), which already comes with GPS and relevant information. But most importantly, follow all safety recommendations and don't get out of your car.

When deciding to go on a safari with the buses available at the Gunma Safari Park , you can still choose from a few options. The call safari bus : Feed the Animals Experience bus and the Range Tour . The latter is ideal if you are looking for a more private tour, in a smaller car and with a private guide.

Matéria Gunma Safari Park

How to get to the park

135km away from Tokyo, getting to the park is easy, as there are good options. By train to the station Takasaki it's a two-hour trip (from Tokyo). However, another alternative is to use the bullet train, which reduces the time by one hour. From Takasaki Station you need to change on the Joshin Dentetsu Line to Joshu-Tomioka Station (another 35 minutes) and finally, the park is only 10 minutes away by taxi.

Family-Friendly Gunma

Discover a natural playground for the whole family

Family-Friendly Gunma

Last updated: September 17, 2021

Gunma is the perfect destination for family fun and fresh air. The region has beautiful mountain hiking trails, world-class ski resorts, exciting rivers and gorges, historic castle towns, and an abundance of museums. There are many kids’ activities that parents will enjoy too. Whether you are looking for a wild adventure or a gentle animal encounter, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy. The kids will be talking about your Gunma holiday for years to come.

Action and adventure

Action and adventure

Gunma’s mountains and valleys offer respite from Japan’s heat and humidity in summer. Head to Minakami for fun in the water. Families can enjoy a guided tour by canoe or kayak among the natural scenery and clear waterways of the Minakami area, or get wet and wild with a canyoning experience. There are options for everyone from beginners to seasoned thrill-seekers. Older kids will love to slip, slide, and float down a mountain stream. Some local tour companies have special courses for younger kids, and English-speaking guides. In winter, Gunma is the go-to destination for powder hounds. Minakami Kogen Ski Resort is ideal for all ages, with a kids’ park and activities for non-skiers like snow rafting and sledding. Ski resorts all over Gunma offer English-language ski instruction upon request (advance reservation may required). You can rent everything you need to enjoy a day in the snow.

Animal encounters

Animal encounters

The Gunma Safari Park offers a full day out for the whole family. Drive your car or take a special bus around the park to see 100 species of animals—including elephants, rhinos, lions, white tigers, bears, and giraffes. There are opportunities to feed larger animals like lions from the safety of the bus and to pet and feed farmyard animals in the park’s Walking Safari Zone. An adjoining theme park has all the classic rides, including a roller coaster, Ferris wheel, and safari train. Ikaho Green Bokujo is a farm-themed amusement park in the foothills of Mt. Haruna , near Ikaho Onsen . Kids can enjoy horse rides and petting sheep, goats, and rabbits. Located on the same spacious grounds, Hara Museum ARC is a contemporary art museum with plenty of room to roam. The permanent outdoor exhibition includes a giant version of Andy Warhol’s soup can. Its on-site eatery, Cafe d’Art, features colorful cakes inspired by artists, which will appeal to adults and kids alike.

Crafts and tradition

Crafts and tradition

Experience traditional country life at Takuminosato , a collection of four villages near Minakami forest. Wander among the rural houses, rice fields, and orchards, and try craft workshops such as washi papermaking, dyeing, weaving, and soba making. The villages also host fruit-picking experiences. There are restaurants to suit all tastes, and spacious picnic areas. Head to Castle Town Obata and step back in time to the Sengoku period in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Obata family ruled the area from their namesake castle. The charming town is ideal for strolling, with picturesque waterways and preserved samurai residences. Families can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Rakusan-en, a traditional garden with carp ponds, bridges, and tea houses to explore. During the town’s cherry blossom festival in early April, residents in samurai armor parade along the tree-lined streets of Obata, from Rakusan-en to Kanra Sogo Koen Park, culminating in a ceremony to welcome the warriors, open-air tea ceremonies, taiko drum performances, and matchlock gun demonstrations.

Fruits and flowers

Fruits and flowers

Enjoy lush blooms every season at Kaneko Seeds Gunma Flower Park , which features an English garden, a Japanese garden, and a rock garden. The greenhouses feature plant life from various tropical countries. The colorful displays of cacti and succulents are especially popular with kids. The park has a play area with slides, mazes, a jungle gym, and an obstacle course. In summer, there is a splash pool. Shady picnic areas are ideal for a family break, or try the park’s casual restaurants, which offer kids’ meals. Alternatively, AEON Mall in Ota, a 45 minutes drive away has a food court with options to satisfy the whole family, as well as plenty of shopping options. In the summer months, Tambara’s slopes are blanketed with flowers. The Tambara Lavender Park specializes in lavender. Over 50,000 lavender plants bloom in summer, along with other flower varieties, including sunflowers and hydrangeas. The purple lavender-flavored ice cream is a must-try on a summer’s day. The park’s ski lift provides a fun way to access the upper reaches. Remember your trip to the park with souvenirs of lavender soap and cosmetics. There are farms across Gunma where you can pick and eat fruit in different seasons. Strawberries are grown at just the right height for kids of all ages to pick, and come into season from early winter through early spring. Kajitsu no Sato Harada Farm in Numata grows strawberries, cherries, peaches, grapes, and apples. Its farm shop sells treats made from the farm’s fruits, including cake, juice, and pie.

“Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my!”

That line from “The Wizard of Oz” came to mind as I looked out my car window and saw ferocious creatures staring straight at me like I was a dinner platter on wheels.

The Gunma Safari Park in Gunma prefecture in Japan is unlike any zoo or other animal experience I’ve ever had. It’s a lot better.

The park features exotic creatures residing on 360,000 square meters of land, giving its visitors a taste of safari experience just a couple of hours northwest of Tokyo.

There is no hunting or killing involved in this safari, but you can pay to drive your own vehicle or take a bus through various animal habitats. Instead of the cramped cages of a typical zoo, the safari space is wide open. High fences between the habitats keep the species apart, so you won’t see a lion and a giraffe sharing the same space, but the animals can walk right up to your car.

I don’t think I ever imagined I’d have a hungry-looking wild beast just a few feet away from me.

The idea might sound a little unsettling at first, and it’s completely natural to worry that a tiger or bear might decide to make the silly humans in the car its next meal. However, once there, I was surprised by how calm the animals were, and the park staff looked ready to react if any animals got out of hand. I also realized that as long as I kept my windows up and didn’t do anything to agitate the animals, they were not likely to attack us.

What I really liked about the park compared with a typical zoo is that most of the animals seemed a lot more relaxed because of the extra space. Lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceros, elephants and antelope roam the sub-Saharan African habitats. Other habitats feature tigers, bears, buffalo and monkeys.

Seeing the lion pride up close was an awe-inspiring experience. With such a great view of these animals, I was able to appreciate the deep wounds and scars some of these lions have received, a sobering reminder of how vicious and deadly they can be. It was surreal to watch a lion just casually walk past my window ignoring me, knowing full well if I even attempted to step out of my car, I could easily be torn to shreds. It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

Feeling daring, my friends and I did the safari in my car instead of the park-operated bus. There is something liberating about driving your own car into a pack of deadly animals that gets your blood pumping. The colorful, animal-shaped buses are a perfect alternative if you want to add a greater sense of distance between man and beast, and they provide a feeding box that allows you to attract the animals closer.

While the animal habitats are the highlight of the park, it also has standard zoo-like displays where you can pet a lamb, feed grass to a llama or even give a tiger or lion some meat with tongs through a little opening.

There is also a small amusement park for kids with a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, bumper cars and other traditional fair activities.

As one of Japan’s two safari parks, Gunma Safari Park features over 100 different species, most of which can be viewed via tracks that are open to both cars and tour buses.  If you’ve hired a car, it’s a good way to explore the park – the provided tour buses are crowded and fill up quickly.  For families, the on-site amusement park is a nice alternative; with Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, and a mini train-safari, it’s a great way for the kids to enjoy the area at their own pace.

African safari wildlife park to open march 22 for 56th season, ‘you may even be lucky enough to witness the birth of an alpaca or bison,’ park director says.

African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton is preparing to open the gates for its 56th season, which begins March 22, according to a news release.

“Early spring is a great time to visit the Park because most of our animals are totally unbothered by the chilly-to-mild weather,” said Park Director Kelsey Keller in the release. “You may even be lucky enough to witness the birth of an Alpaca or Bison.”

The Park’s ever-popular Drive-Thru Safari features zebras, bison, alpacas, elk, exotic cattle, emus and more, according to the release.

It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with the last car admitted at 4 p.m., the release said.

The Park’s warm-weather animals, such as giraffe, generally will not be visible unless the air temperature is above 60 degrees, according to the release.

The Walk-Thru Safari, which features gibbons, lemurs, kangaroos, warthogs, educational animal shows and animal-feeding experiences, will open in mid-May, the release said.

To celebrate opening day, the Park is offering general admission tickets for $16.95, a savings of up to $16 per person, that can be used anytime during the 2024 season, according to the release.

This promotional price, available through March 31, can be purchased only at africansafariwildlifepark.com — it’s not available at the gate, the release said.

The African Safari Wildlife Park is located at 267 S. Lightner Road.

I visited 5 of the best safari parks in Africa. The trip was filled with surprises, and there are a few things I wish I'd known before leaving.

  • I visited five of Kenya's best safari parks to see some of  Africa's most famous animals in the wild.
  • There were many aspects of the safari that surprised me despite the research I did before my trip.
  • I was surprised by many things, including how long I spent sitting in safari cars.

Insider Today

Seeing some of Africa's most famous animals in the wild has been on my bucket list for years. With adventure travel on the rise, I decided to take the plunge and make the 20+ hour flight to Africa to visit some of Kenya's best safari parks.

Masai Mara is arguably the most famous for big-cat sightings, but Amboseli National Park , Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, Nairobi National Park, and Hell's Gate National Park are also must-see reserves teeming with wildlife.

I did lots of research beforehand but found I was unprepared for many things I experienced while on safari — and there are things I'll definitely do differently the next time I go.

From what I should have worn to what seeing the animals was really like, here's what surprised me most about going on safari in Kenya.

I sat in the safari vehicle for about 8 hours every day

Between a morning and afternoon game drive, I spent about eight hours in the car daily. It was shocking to see the low number of daily steps on my Oura ring.

I started doing yoga at the end of the night to loosen up my hips. My airplane pillow also helped me stay comfortable, especially during the seven-hour drives to other parks.

My shoes were off for most of the drives

In hindsight, I should have worn sandals on my drives. Most safari vehicles have small windows and a top that lifts up, and you're frequently standing on the chairs to get a better view.

We took off our shoes when we got into the car so we were ready to hop up on the chairs at a moment's notice.

I had lots of early mornings and bedtimes.

The best times for safaris are in the mornings and at dusk, and sometimes, we had 4 a.m. start times. The lack of sleep , paired with the heat, made me eager to get to bed early.

Related stories

I'm not a morning person, but I preferred the early drives for the animal activity (and incredible sunrises) we saw. We used the less-ideal safari hours during the day to nap, do other activities in the area, or drive to other parks.

Many animals can be difficult to spot due to distance or camouflage

We had our fair share of close-up sightings, but many of the animals we wanted to see were far away and sometimes not immediately obvious to the naked eye.

We ditched our iPhones and used binoculars and someone's camera viewfinder to get a closer look.

A pair of binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential for getting the best view (and pictures) possible.

There were long periods of time with minimal animal sightings

Safari drives can be frustrating because you can't control what animals you'll see, how far away they are, and how long the sighting will last. But being patient can be rewarding.

During one dusk drive, we spent three hours searching for a pride of lions without any luck. Finally, as the sun set in the last half hour, we stumbled upon three female lions napping, a leopard, and giraffes.

Many of the animals are sleeping during the day

I expected to see animals moving around or hunting, but many were resting during the day. It was only when dusk approached that they started to slowly stake out a spot by the grazing herds.

If I go on safari again, I'll book a night drive so I can see how the lions and other animals act during their peak hours of activity.

My view was largely out of my control

Whenever a less common animal like a lion or cheetah is spotted, a traffic jam of safari vehicles speed over and line up, vying for the best view.

What you see — and sometimes, if you see anything at all — can depend on your driver and what vantage point they can get.

Your view can also depend on your position in the car. I spent a lot of time scrambling around to catch a sighting (and a photo, if I was lucky).

Prey is plentiful, but seeing any action is unlikely

Gazelles and impalas were everywhere, so it was surprising to learn that the lions might not eat for days.

Our driver told us the best thing he's seen on safari was a cheetah hunting a gazelle, and then a pride of lions swooping in to steal his meal. However, these kinds of sightings are rare.

Predators need to consider everything from the direction the wind is blowing to the length of the grass when trying to sneak up on their prey. Many hunts are unsuccessful, so seeing one in person is unlikely.
