Geo Traveler Guide: Meteorite Impact

Updated for Version 3.0

geo traveller guide

Table of Contents

For a long time Geo was the most popular Element for the Traveler compared to their Anemo and Electro counterparts, and for good reason. Even with the release of Dendro Traveler, they are still a very strong free character with high flexibility and utility that allows them to contribute in the Spiral Abyss and Overworld alike—whether it comes from their team-wide buffs, strong personal damage, or long-lasting Geo Constructs.

  • High damage multipliers on both the Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst
  • Doesn’t require a lot of field time
  • Can battery other Geo characters very well
  • Geo Constructs can block attacks and prevent enemies from moving too far away
  • The Geo Constructs created by their Elemental Burst can resonate with Zhongli’s pillar while not counting towards the 3 Geo Construct limit
  • Provides Interruption Resistance and CRIT Rate with 100% uptime
  • Generally needs very little ER
  • Using the Elemental Skill properly requires practice
  • The Geo Constructs can be rather anti-productive in certain teams
  • The CRIT Rate buff from C1 doesn’t apply to the Elemental Burst that triggers it
  • Relatively low base stats
  • The Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst can push enemies away
  • Reliance on Geo Resonance to reach their full damage potential

Character Breakdown

Every Element of the Traveler is like a different character, with Talents that are leveled up separately using different materials, as well as Constellations that are obtained in different ways.

Talent Priority

Elemental Skill ≥ Elemental Burst > Normal Attack

geo traveller guide

Talent Description

Normal Attack Performs up to 5 rapid strikes.

Charged Attack Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash 2 rapid sword strikes.

Plunging Attack Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact.

The Normal and Charged Attacks are usually not worth using, due to the Traveler’s low Talent multipliers as well as low base stats. In most teams, this Talent can be left unleveled; however, when using Geo Traveler as an on-field DPS that uses Normal or Charged Attacks, this should be leveled up to maximize their damage, as it also helps to gain certain weapon stacks.

geo traveller guide

You disgorge a meteorite from the depths of the earth, dealing AoE Geo DMG. The meteorite is considered a Geo Construct, and can be climbed or used to block attacks.

Hold This skill’s positioning may be adjusted.

Pressing this Skill takes some time to cast due to the long animation, so it’s better to either hold or animation cancel by jumping or dashing. This is a very important part of Geo Traveler’s kit; the meteorite lasts up to 40s and only has a 6s CD (with the 1st Ascension Passive). It generates 3.33 Elemental Particles on average, which allows them to battery other Geo characters. The meteorite inherits Geo Traveler’s Max HP and can be destroyed by large attacks from enemies. It’s a lot stronger than most shields but it can’t move with the active character, so it should only be used as a shield in emergencies (see below in the Shielding section). There are an unlimited number of ways to use the meteorit: from blocking projectile attacks, to crowd control, to helping with Overworld exploration, and so on. There is a limit of 3 Geo Constructs, meaning when there are already 3 meteorites and/or Geo Constructs and you place down another meteorite, the first one that was placed down will explode. This Skill snapshots Geo Traveler’s stats on cast, meaning that whenever the meteorite explodes, it will do the same amount of damage as when it was placed with C2, even when buffs such as the ATK from Bennett’s Burst run out.  One more thing to note is that it can deal damage without actually placing the meteorite, this is useful when you don’t want to cause any existing Geo Constructs to break. A few ways to do this are by aiming it on top of the Elemental Burst, on another Geo Construct, and on a flying enemy. Keep in mind that it doesn’t work on Hydro Mimic Raptors, also known as Oceanid birds.

Meteorite Placement

From left to right: press, hold, jump, and dash.

The actual meteorite formation takes the same amount of time for press, jump, and dash; the difference is in how soon after placing it you can do other things. Jumping keeps the Traveler in place while dashing moves them forward, past the meteorite. Overall, it’s recommended to hold due to how versatile and easy to control it is, since it’s the only way to aim it and decide where to place it instead of placing it right in front of you. The key to mastering the Geo Traveler is getting the hang of placing the meteorite. In some cases you may not want to break other important Geo Constructs (e.g. Albedo’s flower) by placing another meteorite. Since placing the meteorite on top of enemies will usually lift them up out of reach (e.g. ruin guards) or not place the meteorite at all (bosses), the correct placement for such cases would be near the enemies, close enough for them to take the initial damage, but not close enough for the construct to influence or be influenced by their position.

geo traveller guide

Energizing the Geo deep underground, you set off expanding shockwaves. Launches surrounding opponents back and deals AoE Geo DMG. A stone wall is erected at the edges of the shockwave. The stone wall is considered a Geo Construct, and may be used to block attacks.

This does 4 instances of Geo DMG called “shockwaves” and leaves behind a circle of walls which you can enter and leave. Although it is technically considered as 4 Geo Constructs, it does not count towards the global limit of having 3 Geo Constructs on the field. This is very useful due to the walls resonating with Zhongli’s pillar and not causing any other Geo Constructs to break due to the limit. The damage from this ability also snapshots, but it snapshots Geo Traveler’s stats sometime between pressing Q and when the first shockwave deals damage. Not only does the Burst do a lot of damage and buff the team with C1, but it can also trap enemies (including the Maguu Kenki), which results in a lot of utility. Like all Elemental Bursts, it has i-frames during which Geo Traveler will be invulnerable to all kinds of damage, it’s fairly short and only lasts for about a second, but can be helpful nonetheless. This also means that Geo Traveler can be swapped out very quickly after casting the Burst.

When casting the Burst, the shockwaves will push small enemies out, then 4 walls will appear, but in total it only covers half of the circle. Most parts of the walls can’t be jumped past, which is good when trying to trap bigger enemies in, but a bad thing when trying to reach smaller enemies.

geo traveller guide

Reduces Starfell Sword’s CD by 2s.

A useful Passive that decreases the Elemental Skill CD from 8s to 6s. This mainly benefits teams that allow for flexible rotations and teams that use Geo Traveler as the on-field DPS since they allow Geo Traveler to use their Skill more often, fully taking advantage of its high multipliers and Energy generation. In teams that require fixed rotations, such as those with Xiao, Itto, or Hu Tao, this Passive doesn’t change much since Geo Traveler will be limited to a couple Skill casts per rotation regardless.

geo traveller guide

The final hit of a Normal Attack combo triggers a collapse, dealing 60% of ATK as AoE Geo DMG.

This adds a no- hitlag Elemental attack to the 5th and last Normal Attack, doing Geo DMG instead of Physical DMG. This is not enough to make it recommended to use Normal Attacks, though players who do use Geo Traveler as an on-field DPS can gain some value from it since it can trigger the Normal Attack stack of Mistsplitter Reforged and be buffed by Yun Jin’s Burst.

Constellations

As with all Traveler Constellations, they are free and can be obtained by progressing through the game. 2 of them are from Chapter I, Act II and Act III of the Archon Quest, while the other 4 can be bought from Xingxi’s Souvenir Shop in Liyue for 225 Geo Sigils each. It’s very important to get all 6 Constellations if you want to use Geo Traveler; each one increases their damage by a significant amount.

geo traveller guide

Party members within the radius of Wake of Earth have their CRIT Rate increased by 10% and have increased resistance against interruption.

This increases Geo Traveler’s utility as a support by giving 10% CRIT Rate to whichever character that is standing in it. This CRIT Rate buff is only applied to the active character once the walls are formed and can be snapshotted, which means that when a character casts an ability that does multiple instances of damage over time, it will stay for the whole duration. However, do note that the walls themselves also snapshot, meaning that the buff does not apply to the Burst that triggers this Constellation. But it will apply to the following Bursts because of C6.

geo traveller guide

When the meteorite created by Starfell Sword is destroyed, it will also explode, dealing additional AoE Geo DMG equal to the amount of damage dealt by Starfell Sword.

This effect can be triggered when meteorites expire naturally, are destroyed by enemies, or are destroyed when the player tries to place a 4th Geo Construct, breaking the Geo Construct limit. The explosion snapshots, so its DMG is based on the Geo Traveler’s stats at the time when they initially placed the meteorite. However, any buffs that depend on the state of enemies (i.e. Lion’s Roar passive, the 4-Piece set bonuses of Lavawalker, Thundersoother, and any RES Shred) are not snapshotted, and while CRIT buffs can be snapshotted, the explosion crits separately from the initial cast. In practice, it’s most effective to manually explode it by placing down a 4th meteorite so the 1st one does the same amount of damage as when it was placed. Players can also lure opponents into breaking meteorites, which is very effective against aggressive or high-damaging opponents such as Ruin Guards, Fatui Agents, and most bosses. When focusing on this Constellation, it will increase Geo Traveler’s damage greatly; having other characters that can place Geo Constructs will help to explode the meteorites.

geo traveller guide

Increases the Level of Wake of Earth by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.

This increases the damage of the Elemental Burst, which is a direct DPS increase.

geo traveller guide

The shockwave triggered by Wake of Earth regenerates 5 Energy for every opponent hit. A maximum of 25 Energy can be regenerated in this manner at any one time.

While this Constellation doesn’t necessarily increase damage directly, it greatly reduces Geo Traveler’s ER requirement, allowing them to have more offensive stats from their weapon and artifacts.

geo traveller guide

Increases the Level of Starfell Sword by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.

Similar to C3, but for the Elemental Skill, this Constellation also increases Geo Traveler’s DPS.

geo traveller guide

The barrier created by Wake of Earth lasts 5s longer. The meteorite created by Starfell Sword lasts 10s longer.

This increases the duration of both the Skill and Burst. Without C6 the Skill already lasts 30s—which is more than enough for most rotations—so it’s mostly useful for Overworld exploration since the meteorite now lasts 40s. The increased duration of the Burst is a lot more useful for combat, because the CRIT Rate and Interruption Resistance buffs now last for the full duration of a 20s rotation, which helps teams with members that have an Elemental Burst CD of 20s. Since Geo Traveler’s Burst snapshots, it will not receive its own CRIT Rate buff; however, C6 allows Traveler to snapshot the CRIT Rate buff from a previous Elemental Burst onto another Elemental Burst so that its CRIT Rate is increased.

There are a lot of interesting ways that the Elemental Skill can be used, and these are some of the different techniques that have been discovered. While it’s not necessary to learn all of them—in fact some of them are not recommended in combat; it definitely makes Geo Traveler less clunky and more fun to play. Note that all of these demos are done slowly so it’s easier to understand what’s going on, and can be done much faster with practice.

A very common mistake is pushing enemies up, this can make Geo Traveler feel clunky. There are many ways to play around this. With practice and patience, all the enemies will eventually stay on the ground. The right way to place the meteorite is not too close that you push the enemy up, but not too far that you don’t do damage to it. For reference there are 3 circles that move outwards when aiming, try to place it in a way that the enemy hitbox is between the 2 outer circles. When aiming the meteorite over the head of an enemy, it can be placed behind it. When doing the same against a displaceable enemy, the meteorite will push it towards the player even more, which is very useful as a form of crowd control. This is the easiest when the enemies are at the maximum aiming range of the meteorite, but can be done when they are closer as well. Sometimes it can be useful to not actually place down the meteorite by canceling it. As long as it hits an enemy it will deal damage and generate Elemental Particles. This can be done by aiming it on the side of an existing meteorite or on a different Geo Construct. It is not recommended to aim on the spikes of the walls from the Burst, since it can completely displace the meteorite due to its unique surface area, causing it to not deal damage or generate Particles.

The meteorite can be used as a quick shield to block projectile and laser-based attacks if it’s aimed between the player and the enemy or on top of the player. This can be used to protect Leyline Monoliths as well. It’s also possible to jump straight up when used as a pseudo shield, which is faster than climbing up if you ever need to get up there for whatever reason. However, before jumping up make sure to always take a step forward, if you stay where you are and jump up directly it will take a bit longer due to the climbing animation. Last but not least, possible to switch characters while you are standing inside the meteorite.

Rockstep is not a very practical technique since Geo Traveler shouldn’t be focusing on Plunging DMG, it looks cool nonetheless. The idea is to use the press the Skill and jump onto the meteorite during its formation, then jumping again to plunge. Starstep is when you jump directly onto the meteorite without having to climb it, followed by a plunge in the direction you came from. In a variation of this technique you can also switch to a different character with higher Plunge DMG multipliers right after jumping. Note that you can’t jump to the very top, but you can jump high enough to do a Plunging Attack or walk a bit to get to the top. This completely skips the climbing animation.

More about the meteorite

geo traveller guide

The meteorite isn’t completely circular and neither is the hitbox, while it is possible to directly jump up from any direction, it’s the most consistent when trying to land either on the blue gap or to the right of it. There are 4 of them, and the meteorite always faces the same way in the Overworld (it varies in Domains). When jumping from the right distance, the character will land somewhere between the green and red lines, allowing them to plunge; you can also keep “walking” up to the top where the surface is flat.

Character Interactions

If there are multiple characters that can place down Geo Constructs, when placing down a 4th one it will not always destroy the 1st one. This is because all other Geo characters have a limit on how many of a specific construct can be on-field at a time. With correct positioning, all 4 walls plus 2 meteorites can resonate with Zhongli’s Stone Stele, dealing damage in a very large AoE. This interaction is commonly known as “microwave”. Keep in mind that the walls don’t count towards the 3 Geo Construct limit, while the Stone Stele and meteorites do.

Enemy Interactions

Golden wolflord.

This is the fastest way to break the Golden Wolflord’s shield with only Geo Traveler:

  • Quckly go around the arena and place down a meteorite in front of the 1st and 2nd skull.
  • The Golden Wolflord will do a large AoE attack, causing both meteorites to explode and thus the skulls.
  • Place down 1 meteorite in front of the 3rd skull.
  • Do 5 Normal Attacks on the 3rd skull to get the Geo attack from A4. Tip: Stand behind the meteorite and the skull when doing the Normal Attacks, as they can act as a barrier to block some incoming attacks.

The best way to aim the meteorite is in front of the skulls and at the right distance; where placing the meteorite breaks 2/3 of the skull, and C2 finishes off the other 1/3 when the Golden Wolflord deploys an AoE attack that consequently breaks the meteorites. Do note that placing it behind a skull can work but is not as reliable, because the large AoE attack does not hit meteorites behind the skulls. Although after the large AoE attack, there are various smaller AoE attacks that can hit the meteorites but it is highly inconsistent.

Elemental application in Genshin Impact is measured in Gauge Units, which is always the same amount for each attack and it is not dependent on damage. Like all Elemental shields and armor, the skulls that form the shield of the Golden Wolflord each need 3U (Units) of Geo to be destroyed. This means that Geo Traveler needs very low investment when used as a solo Geo character to face this boss. Placing the meteorite applies 2U Geo, the explosion from C2 applies 1U Geo, and the Geo attack from A4 also applies 1U Geo. Whether a meteorite is destroyed by the enemy or by placing down a 4th Geo Construct, C2 will always apply 1U Geo. To learn more about Gauge Units, visit the Elemental Gauge Theory page.

Playstyles and Builds

Quickswap DPS

This is the most popular way to play Geo Traveler and the best way to reach their maximum damage potential. As a quickswap DPS, they are swapped in to use their Elemental Skill and Burst as often as possible; which have high multipliers, short cooldowns, and require very little field time. They can buff the team with CRIT Rate and Interruption Resistance while doing considerable damage themselves when built correctly. Not to mention Geo Traveler only needs ~130% ER to use their Elemental Burst off CD because of C4, which is easily achievable through artifact substats. On the rare occasion that Normal Attacks are used, they are only used for triggering things such as Xingqiu or Beidou’s Elemental Burst, since the damage from the Normal Attacks themselves is negligible and spending the time to do them lowers the overall team damage.

Geo Traveler can also be used completely as a support, providing CRIT Rate, ATK%, Elemental Particles, and Interruption Resistance to the team. In other words, they mainly serve the role of a buffer and a battery. In terms of playstyle, it’s the same as if they were a quickswap DPS, the only difference is in the equipment, which usually focuses on buffing the team further with 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige instead of doing the most amount of personal damage possible; and using Favonius Sword if needed, in order to generate even more Particles. They will sometimes need more ER since in certain rotations their Skill can only be used once. As a battery, Geo Traveler will most likely need an ER main stat artifact in order to give their Elemental Particles to another character and still use their own Burst off CD. Keep in mind that they get 5-25 Flat Energy depending on the amount of enemies that their Elemental Burst hits and it has a 60 Energy Cost, which can put their ER requirement at up to 200%. Thus the Favonius Sword and/or an ER% Sands would be highly recommended when using Geo Traveler as a Battery. Use the Energy Recharge Calculator to find out exactly how much ER every character on the team needs. However, when Geo Traveler has enough ER you can always start getting better artifacts for them to increase their personal damage in a team. There are many ways to use Geo Traveler as the only Geo character in a team; although this isn’t optimal for their personal damage—since Geo Traveler really wants Geo Resonance—it does mean that they potentially can provide a lot of utility to a team that isn’t necessarily designed for them. Plenty of teams have flexible slots, meaning almost any character can be part of them. One of the ways to use Geo Traveler as a support is to fill the flexible slot when facing certain enemies, such as the Golden Wolflord. See above for tips on how to break the shield efficiently.

On-Field DPS

Although this is generally not the best option for Geo Traveler because the majority of their damage comes from the Skill and Burst, things have slightly changed since the release of Yun Jin. Not only does she provide Geo Resonance, but she also buffs Normal Attacks, allowing Geo Traveler to spend a lot of time on-field and dealing more damage than before. Before 2.4, Charged Attacks were used more often because the multipliers are higher, but they consume Stamina and you need Stamina to dodge; now that Yun Jin has been released, she pairs very well with Geo Traveler as an on-field DPS that does Physical DMG on top of Geo DMG by allowing you to use Normal Attacks instead. When using the Elemental Skill 2-3 times in a rotation Geo Traveler only needs 100%~130% ER, which is easily achievable through artifact substats. At the same investment level, Geo Traveler will do more Geo DMG than Physical DMG; therefore even when they are used as an on-field DPS that uses Normal or Charged Attacks, the focus should be on Geo DMG. Anything that buffs Physical DMG (such as Yun Jin’s Elemental Burst) is only a bonus.

TL;DR Ranking

Keep in mind that this is calculated with very specific assumptions (read below) and is not the only “correct” weapon ranking there is, hence the detailed ranking is generally more accurate.  All the weapons are being compared to Amenoma Kageuchi because it’s the best F2P option.

Assumptions: Level 90, C6, 9/12/12 Talents, 130% minimum ER; 2-Piece Archaic Petra 2-Piece 18% ATK; ATK%/Geo DMG Bonus/CRIT Rate or DMG main stats, substat distribution following the KQM Calculation Standard; 20% RES Shred and 20% ATK (4-Piece Tenacity of the Milellith) from Zhongli’s Skill, 998 ATK and 20% ATK (4-Piece Noblesse Oblige) from Bennett’s Burst, Geo Resonance with 100% shield uptime; damage is from an EQE rotation.

Detailed Ranking

This subsection is more for understanding how each weapon works instead of ranking them per se, and it takes everything into consideration– Base ATK, substats, passives, refinements, teammates, how easy/hard they are to build around, how to gain stacks effectively, what buffs are good, etc.

Main Stat Priority

Substat priority.

DPS: CRIT ≥ ATK% > ER% > ATK

Support: ER% > CRIT Rate* > ATK% > ATK > CRIT

*CRIT Rate has a higher priority when using the Favonius Sword, otherwise ATK% is generally preferred over CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG.

Always make sure to get enough ER% before trying to get other substats since using the Burst as soon as the cooldown ends is essential. Geo Traveler generally needs ~100% ER as an on-field DPS, ~130% ER as a quickswap DPS, and ~200% as a support.

These are again calculated with very specific assumptions (read below), but the overall best options are very similar to other assumptions as well. All the artifact sets are being compared to 2pc Archaic Petra (AP) + 2pc 18% ATK.

Explanation

Choosing Artifacts Geo Traveler doesn’t have a dedicated artifact set, therefore the artifact stats matter a lot more. Overall, use whichever set combination that results in the best performance for your Traveler, with the notable exceptions being 4-Piece Thundersoother/Lavawalker and 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige. Thundersoother and Lavawalker only work in very specific teams due to the 4-Piece set bonuses being tricky to manage, since you need to keep the desired aura on the enemies at all times. Meanwhile Noblesse Oblige is more on the supportive side and does not optimize Geo Traveler’s personal damage. If Traveler is used in a flex spot or as a support that you haven’t fully invested in, it is totally fine to have no set bonuses as long as you obtain enough ER. To find out which of your artifacts are the best, use the Genshin Optimizer , set a minimum stat requirement for ER and select Skill DMG or Burst DMG as the optimization target, then the first result will be the optimal combination for your specific account. Generally, any combination of 2-Piece Archaic Petra, 2-Piece 18% ATK, 2-Piece Noblesse Oblige, or 2-Piece Emblem of Severed Fate works well. Farming Artifacts Previously, Geo Traveler’s strongest generalist sets were not recommended to farm due to requiring Archaic Petra from the notoriously Resin-inefficient Domain of Guyun. However, as of Version 3.0 Archaic Petra artifacts can be crafted through the Artifact Strongbox, allowing players to obtain this set without needing to spend extra Resin. Farming for whatever artifacts your other team members need and using the leftover artifacts to craft Archaic Petra pieces is an efficient way to obtain a strong set of artifacts for Geo Traveler. However, if you already have strong artifacts from the Noblesse Oblige set or any of the sets offering 18% ATK, it is not necessary to craft Archaic Petra; the difference between 2-Piece combinations with and without Archaic Petra is within a few substats of each other. With 4 different sets of 18% ATK artifacts now in the game, it is definitely the most Resin-efficient to use 2x 18% ATK. Most end-game players should have some 18% ATK with very good substats due to how easy they are to get. Gladiator’s Finale can be obatined from bosses and the Artifact Strongbox, Shimenawa’s Reminiscence is from the same domain as the widely used Emblem of Severed Fate, Echoes of an Offering and Vermillion Hereafter can be obtained through Spiral Abyss rewards.

Teams and Synergies

geo traveller guide

Art credit: CatCrossingArt on Twitter [ original post ]

Geo Traveler is very flexible and can fit into a lot of teams, but they perform the best when there is at least one other Geo character on the team due to how Geo Resonance works. When shielded (either by picking up Crystallize shields or using shields from Talents), the on-field character gets 15% shield strength, 15% DMG Bonus, and enemies will have 20% less Geo RES. Characters that can place down other Geo Constructs are great with Geo Traveler because they will help you take full advantage of C2 and have all the meteorites do double the damage. This section will explain how every Geo character works with Geo Traveler, so hopefully you can pick the best one for your team.

Zhongli is the best teammate that Geo Traveler can have, because he boosts their personal damage significantly. His Jade Shield provides 20% Universal RES Shred in addition to 20% Geo RES Shred from Geo Resonance, the 40% total RES Shred results in roughly 28% damage increase for any Geo character on the team against the usual opponent with a base 10% Geo RES. The most notable interaction between Zhongli and Geo Traveler is Zhongli’s Stone Stele, which causes nearby Geo Constructs to periodically deal Geo DMG to nearby opponents. Since Geo Traveler can create multiple Geo Constructs at a time using their Skill, in addition to 4 Geo Constructs that do not count towards the 3 Geo Construct limit with Burst, they are uniquely able to bring out the full potential of Zhongli’s Stone Stele. If Zhongli is built for shielding instead of DMG, this interaction can still help him trigger the 4-Piece Tenacity of the Millelith set bonus more consistently. Together, Zhongli and Geo Traveler provide Universal RES Shred, shielding, Interruption Resistance, Elemental Particles, CRIT Rate, and ATK buffs, making them a strong choice to pair with any DPS character that isn’t particularly dependent on more than 1 teammate, e.g. Xiao and his battery, Hu Tao and Xingqiu.

While Albedo can’t buff Geo Traveler like Zhongli does, he is great for quickswap teams. Geo Traveler’s Skill is on a 6s CD while Albedo’s is on a 4s CD, meaning both can be used frequently to not only do damage on cast, but also cause the meteorites to explode and deal even more damage. As explained in the meteorite interactions section, Albedo cannot force a meteorite to explode if a Solar Isotoma is on-field; he will break his own Solar Isotoma instead. He doesn’t provide a shield but he can do a lot more off-field damage in comparison to Zhongli (who is usually built for his shield strength). If the other 2 characters on the team are not Geo, Anemo, or Dendro and can apply their Elements frequently, it’s possible to rely on Crystallize shields to take advantage of Geo Resonance. Keep in mind that the shields from the crystals are very weak.

In teams with 3 or 4 Geo characters—whether it’s quickswap or has an on-field DPS such as Noelle or Itto—Gorou and Geo Traveler work very well together. Geo Traveler is ideally built as a quickswap DPS while Gorou is built as a support. Even at a low investment level, Gorou can provide the team with Clear Particles on top of Geo Particles when using Favonius Warbow, DEF, Geo DMG Bonus, ATK when using 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige, and Interruption Resistance. Furthermore, Geo Traveler can provide the team with CRIT Rate, Geo Particles, and even more Interruption Resistance, while dealing large amounts of personal damage. Gorou performs best in Mono Geo teams because his Elemental Skill provides the maximum amount of buffs when there are 3 or more Geo characters in the team.

Since Noelle is heavily dependent on her Burst and does not generate any Energy with her Skill, Geo Traveler’s strong Energy generation (currently the strongest among all Geo characters) is very helpful for her. Noelle also reduces some of the clunk that comes with playing Geo Traveler since her large AoE can reach opponents behind Geo Constructs.

Geo Traveler’s strong Energy generation is helpful for Itto, who depends very heavily upon maximizing his Elemental Burst uptime; the Geo Resonance and CRIT Rate buffs are also very much appreciated. Unfortunately, Itto is not the best character to enable Geo Traveler’s personal DMG, as he requires at least 11 seconds on-field and often more due to hitlag, during which Geo Traveler cannot swap in to cast their Skill or Burst without interrupting Itto’s Burst.

Playing Ningguang with Geo Traveler can be somewhat difficult, as their Geo Constructs can prevent Ningguang from placing her Jade Screen. The meteorites and walls can also block Ningguang’s Charged Attacks and her Burst. However, Geo Traveler provides Ningguang with the key benefits of quickswap DMG, Geo Resonance, and CRIT Rate; and their AoE can help cover one of Ningguang’s main weaknesses, which is that her damage is mostly single-target. Geo Traveler also gains 12% Geo DMG Bonus from Ningguang’s Jade Screen.

As a character that buffs Normal Attacks, Yun Jin doesn’t usually synergize particularly well with Geo Traveler, who deals most of their DMG from their Skill and Burst. She will however be the best teammate for an on-field DPS Geo Traveler, but this is generally not the most effective use of Geo Traveler. The two can still coexist on teams normally thanks to shared synergies with certain characters, such as Noelle.

Team Examples

All images are generated with Genshin Portraits by muakasan#2792 and edited with permission to include Aether and Lumine.

Traveler, Zhongli, Xiangling, Bennett

geo traveller guide

This is a quickswap team, with none of its members needing to be on-field for extended periods of time. Bennett providing healing allows Zhongli to run a damage-oriented build, so this team composition is one of the “microwave” variations, in which Zhongli’s Stone Stele is contributing an appreciable amount of DMG. Since Pyro will be the only Element applied to enemies, this is one of the use cases for 4-Piece Lavawalker or Archaic Petra and Lion’s Roar on Geo Traveler. This is currently the strongest team for Geo Traveler’s personal DMG thanks to the plethora of buffs active, not only from the characters, but also from Geo and Pyro Resonance (their own 10% CRIT Rate, 40% Geo RES shred, 15% DMG Bonus, 25% ATK, Bennett’s Burst, Xiangling’s Ascension 4 Passive, and 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige on Bennett).

Traveler, Zhongli, Albedo, Gorou

geo traveller guide

Another quickswap team, but since it’s Mono Geo, there are almost no Elemental Reactions except for when enemies do Elemental Attacks, which doesn’t affect anything. With Zhongli’s shield having 100% uptime, healing isn’t needed unless there is Corrosion, in which case C4 Gorou would be helpful. This is a rare team where both Zhongli and Albedo’s Bursts are used due to not having a specific on-field DPS character. Ideally, every character uses their Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst as often as possible, the only character that needs some ER is Gorou because his Burst requires 80 Energy.

Noelle, Traveler, Flex, Flex

geo traveller guide

Geo Traveler can serve as a battery and buffer for Noelle, who heavily relies on maintaining Burst uptime. The Geo core provides team healing and is relatively self-sufficient, so the flexible slots can be any off-field DPS characters or buffers due to Noelle needing to be on-field for an extended period of time during her Burst; including other Geo characters, Fischl, Xingqiu, Rosaria, and Kaeya. See the Noelle Guide for more information.

Itto, Traveler, Bennett, Geo

geo traveller guide

Itto also relies on his Burst to deal the majority of his damage, and as an on-field DPS he prefers more offensive stats (such as CRIT) instead of ER. Geo Traveler can help to battery his Burst, as well as buff him with CRIT Rate. Bennett is the healer and ATK buffer in this team and every character benefits from him. The last character can be Zhongli or Gorou for even more buffs, or Albedo for off-field damage. See the Itto Guide for more information.

Xiao, Sucrose/Jean, Traveler, Zhongli

geo traveller guide

Geo Traveler is an excellent teammate for Xiao thanks to their shared synergy with Zhongli and their ability to contain opponents within the walls from the Burst. Since Xiao’s plunges knocking away opponents can be frustrating to deal with, the soft crowd control provided by Geo Traveler’s constructs is a lot more valuable than usual here. The normal benefits of Geo Resonance, CRIT Rate, and more Stone Stele pulses are all still useful here. Geo Traveler can be run with low investment for this role because of all the utility they provide, but still stands to contribute a lot of DMG if invested. See the Xiao Guide for more information.

Hu Tao, Xingqiu, Traveler, Zhongli

geo traveller guide

Hu Tao is another character who pairs well with Zhongli and only relies heavily on one teammate (Xingqiu), so Geo Traveler can be added here as well for Geo Resonance. They will expand the area covered by Zhongli’s Stone Stele pulses, which increases overall team DPS. Without C6 Xingqiu, Hu Tao may lose 1-2 Reverse Vaporizes every rotation due to the pulses from Zhongli’s Stone Stele, which resonates with all of Geo Traveler’s Geo Constructs as well. It’s recommended to have C6 Xingqiu in order to reach this team’s maximum damage potential.

Raiden, Anemo, Bennett, Traveler

geo traveller guide

While Geo Traveler is generally used with other Geo characters for Geo Resonance, they can also be used without other Geo characters in teams where they are primarily valued for their support capabilities. Raiden teams are an example because she appreciates having a buff that lasts her entire rotation, Geo Traveler’s Burst helps keep opponents contained, and their Burst is powerful enough and costs enough Energy to work well with Raiden’s Skill while not requiring too much Energy Recharge from Geo Traveler. Bennett can also be replaced by a TTDS user or a C6 Sara that uses 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige.

Geo Traveler Guide and Best Builds

Geo Traveler Guide and Best Builds for Genshin Impact

The Traveler is the character you start with, being a 5-Star Sword character with no set Element. Instead, you choose the element you want to use. While the Traveler tends to be very simple in design, Geo is a peculiar elements to use, as Geo is generally viewed as one of the weaker elements to use. But despite this, the Geo Traveler can excel pretty well as a support unit, providing good damage buffs to your team and can act as a Battery for other characters, especially other Geo Characters like Navia and Noelle .

Geo Traveler Introduction

Geo Traveler is a 5-star Geo Sword Character DPS and Support in Genshin Impact who mainly focuses on providing Geo Constructs, CRIT Rate buffs and the occasional Crystallize shield. Their Burst and Skill also have high damage multipliers, which can enable them to be a DPS. This guide will focus on Geo Traveler's best weapons, builds, artifacts, teambuilding and more!

Strengths and Weaknesses

Traveler geo support build.

The Geo Traveler's Support build focuses more around staying off-field, swapping in to cast your Elemental Skill and to keep your Elemental Burst running at all times. The walls created by your Burst last 15s and has a 15s cooldown, which means you can keep 100% uptime as long as you generate the 60 energy required to cast the Burst. Furthermore, the 6th Constellation extends the duration by another 5 seconds, making the walls last longer than the cooldown. So for this build, we are building Energy Recharge to maintain this uptime. With the addition of Navia , Geo Traveler has seen some renewed use as a Support, as Navia greatly benefits from the CRIT Rate buff on the Burst with the first Constellation, Invincible Stonewall , and the Energy that the Traveler can provide.

Traveler Geo Dps Build

As mentioned at the start, The Geo Traveler's Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst have pretty good scaling, which enables them to be a dps. The Skill has 6s CD and deals damage a second time with the 2nd Constellation Rockcore Meltdown , where the Meteorite created explodes when it is destroyed (this also happens when the timer runs out).

Between the two builds, the Traveler tends to work best in the role of a Support. This is because of the way the Traveler works when it comes to leveling talents, as every talent needs to be leveled for each of the Traveler's elements. This makes it very expensive to try and use the Traveler offensively for multiple Elements, especially because Geo is not the strongest element to deal damage with. However, when you use the Traveler to support, leveling your talents comes secondary. This means you can still use them while building your team, instead of depending on the talents to deal damage. You still want to level them as it is more damage, but less important.

You will not need to build a lot of Energy Recharge for either of the builds, although it is crucial to keep up 100% uptime for the support build. The reason you don't need to build that much is due to the 4th Constellation, Reaction Force which can return up to 25 Energy per cast. This means your Burst has an effective cost of 35 instead of 60, on top of the Skill having a short cooldown. In the DPS setup, you can afford to wait for the Travelers energy particles, however as Support you will need about 180-200% Energy Recharge to maintain uptime.

Outside this, the Support build is very flexible and can fit into most teams that have open Flex Slots, hence why it is mainly recommended to build the Geo Traveler as a Support character instead of DPS. Focus on getting your Energy Recharge into a comfortable range, and then slowly get artifacts that increase your damage while maintaining your Energy Recharge.

Combos and How to Play Geo Traveler

The Geo Traveler is very simple to play, as with most of their Elements. Your Starfell Sword Skill has 6s cooldown, so you want to cast that as much as possible. Meanwhile Wake of Earth has a 15s CD, meaning that when you play with the Geo Traveler, you end up quickswapping characters regularly. Keeping up your Burst and getting as many Meteorites out is important. As a Support, this is what makes the Geo Traveler great.

The hardest part of using the Geo Traveller correctly is placing your Skill, as it will push displacable targets away from it. This means that you generally don't want to summon it infront of your target, as it will then make it harder for yourself to hit the target. Try to aim it behind or on the side of your enemy. When holding the Skill, you get a small circular aim on the ground that you can move around before releasing. The circle motion will ripple, making it look like its formed by 3 circles. Try aim the skill so that the target is hit between the area created between the 2 outer circles. Outside of this, you can use the Skill to block missiles aswell as use it to climb with.

Geo Traveler's Best Team Comps

Geo Traveler's main team compositions will typically see them supporting another Main DPS. Outside this, you typically see the Geo Traveler together with Zhongli , as Zhongli's Dominus Lapidis Pillars resonates with the Traveler's Meteorite construct.

Navia/Geo Traveller

This team comp revolves around Navia dealing damage, with the Geo Traveler acting as a Battery for her. The Traveler can easily eliminate most of the Energy Recharge requirements for Navia. Potentially all of it depending on Navia's Constellations or choice of weapon. Other than that, it is the increased CRIT Rate from your Burst which allows the Geo Traveler to be a very good pick for this.

Geo Traveler's Mono Geo Quickswap Team

This Mono-Geo team is a very Burst heavy team comp. You want to quickswap between all characters, using their Skills and Burst off cooldown. Make sure that they all stand within the area of Wake of Earth to benefit of the 10% increased CRIT Rate when cycling through characters. With Zhongli's shield having a 100% uptime, a healer is not needed, however it does mean you may want to have food available just in case.

Noelle/Geo Traveler

Another support team, however here the last 2 slots are very flexible. The job of the Geo Traveler here is to enable Noelle to use her Burst as much as possible. Noelle used to be considered a weak character, however she can really output good numbers with the right team. Typically you want to support Noelle with Gorou and/or Yun Jin , however characters like Xingqiu , Fischl and Rosaria can also work. In the slots above, you can choose any supports within the 2 listings.

Xiao Infinite Spin Team

This team is a bit of a funny one. It utilizes the fact, that you can't stand on top of the wall created by Wake of Earth together with Xiao 's Bane of All Evil , enabling him to jump higher to trigger Plunge Attacks. You want to drag your target up against one the walls, then jump above the wall and trigger Plunge attack on Xiao. This Plunge attack won't be able to land as you are unable to stand on top of the wall. Additionally, there is no space between the target and the wall, resulting in you spinning mid air. The game tries to push you along the wall to make you land at some point though.

Geo Traveler's Ascensions, Talents and Constellations

Geo traveler's ascension passives and materials.

Geo Traveler requires a range of materials to ascend to the 6th ascension. Starting from the second ascension they gain additional ATK % as bonus stat giving a total of 24% increased ATK at the final ascension. The total cost to upgrade all ascensions is:

Geo Traveler's Talents

Listed below is each talent and a brief explanation of how they work.

Due to how the Traveler works, the cost of upgrading your talents is different from all other characters. All 3 Talent materials are in use in different amounts, as each upgrade will require a different kind. To level a single talent to 10 costs:

Geo Traveler's Constellations

Since you can get all of these Constellations by grinding, getting all 6 is preferable You gain them through out the Liyue Archon quest, one at the end of Act II and III and you buy the other 4 from Xingxi in her Souvenir Shop in Liyue.

Geo traveler (protagonist) guide - best builds and tips.

This page is part of IGN's Genshin Impact Wiki guide and details everything you need to know about the Geo Traveler (Protagonist) , which includes a full character overview, how to obtain the Geo Traveler, combat details, talents and skill upgrade priorities, a recommended character build, and much more.

Attacked the moment they entered the world of Teyvat, lost their twin sibling after the attack. Now, you're on a grand mission to find your long-lost sibling and help Teyvat along the way! The protagonist of this story, The Traveler!

Traveler (Protagonist) Character Overview

How to get traveler (protagonist), combat details, geo traveler's talents and recommended skill priorities, geo traveler's constellations, best geo traveler character builds, best weapons for the geo traveler.

  • Best Artifacts for The Geo Traveler

The Traveler is the protagonist of the story. Not much is known about them aside from they had the ability to travel between worlds together with their sister. This has come to an abrupt end as an unknown god stopped them in their tracks and captured one of them, then sealed both their abilities to travel to other worlds. Thus, starts the mission of finding their captured twin.

The Traveler is the very first character you will be able to use. There's no need to roll for a gacha banner to get them.

Geo Traveler Cover.png

The Geo Traveler excels in much more ways than the Anemo Traveler but the biggest caveat the Geo Traveler has is their structures which can sometimes block teammates and make it difficult to move around. The other side to that argument is that those structures can be used to reach higher places which is really good for exploring.

The Geo Traveler's talents have a lot to do with their ability to make Geo constructs and deal Geo damage. These abilities can crystallize elements producing crystals that you can pick up which gives you a shield for that specific element.

As a sub DPS, I recommend going:

  • Elemental Burst
  • Elemental Skill
  • Normal Attack

Similar to the Anemo Traveler (Protagonist) the Geo Traveler works differently from other characters . Typically, the way to get constellations is by getting the same character in Genshin Impact's gacha. The Traveler works in a different system. You can raise their constellation levels by just playing the game, completing quests, and exploring the world.

The constellation to look out for if you're using the Geo Traveler as a sub DPS is C1, this provides party members with crit rate which is really really good.

For the Geo Traveler, their supportive capabilities are really good and having to lean on that instead of having a jack-of-all-trades approach with it is going to be much better.

Weapons that boost the damage their elemental skill and elemental burst are really good. As well as some that have energy recharge in them.

Best Artifacts for the Geo Traveler

There are a few ones that are viable and here they are:

If you're focused on making your Geo Traveler a support/sub dps character. We recommend either going with 4 piece Archaic Petra or 4 piece Noblesse Oblige. If you want to have a little bit more damage, you can go 2 piece Archaic Petra and 2 piece Gladiator's Finale.

For main stats , we recommend going for ATK Sands, Geo DMG% Goblet, and Crit Rate/Crit Damage Circlet depending on your crit rate.

This page should probably be updated Traveler’s best in slot weapon would be between Jade Cutter and Mistsplitter instead of Skyward Blade.

Thanks to Geo traveler's A2 adding Geo dmg at the end of the normal attack combo, you can really make use of the 4pc Husk of Opulent Dreams passive and make a budget Albedo using Cinnabar Spindle.

Genshin Impact: The Best Build for Geo Traveler

If you're looking to optimize your Geo Traveler build in Genshin Impact with the best weapons and artifacts, then this guide is for you!

Genshin Impact: The Best Build for Geo Traveler

The main character in Genshin Impact is the Traveler, with the story focusing on their hunt for their twin sibling after being stranded in the world of Teyvat by a mysterious god-like character.

They can be of three different elements -- either Anemo (the starting affinity), Geo , or Electro . All builds use the Sword.

Players can switch between affinities at a relevant Statue of the Seven. Anemo Statues are found in Mondstadt, Geo Statues in Liyue, and Electro Statues in Inazuma.

This build focuses on the Geo Traveler , and is more ideally focused towards a support role.

The best weapons for Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact

There are two ways you can equip Geo Traveler - either boosting damage and buffing afterwards, or aiming for more Elemental Skill DMG.

For the former, select the Skyward Blade , and for the latter, the Festering Desire is a good option.

The best Artifacts for Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact

Archaic Petra is a good set that specifically boosts Geo DMG, with a nice buff to DMG for all party members based on the Crystallize Reaction.

Alternatively, you can opt for Noblesse Oblige for a boost to Elemental Burst DMG, or The Exile for Energy Recharge.

Talent and Constellation priority for Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact

Focus on maxing out Geo Traveler's Wave of Earth Elemental Burst first, for AoE DMG and protection in the form of a barrier wall.

Then, upgrade Traveler's Elemental Skill, Starfell Sword .

Traveler's Invincible Stonewall (C1) Constellation is fantastic, as it increases CRIT Rate and resistance to interruption. Rockcore Meltdown (C2) also adds an AoE explosion to the meteorite, while Reaction Force (C4) regenerates Energy.

Genshin Impact: Best Build For Geo Traveler

Building your Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact will result in a fairly powerful Sub-DPS and Burst Support.

Quick Links

Burst support geo traveler build, sub dps geo traveler build, artifact stat priority for geo traveler, talent priority for geo traveler.

Genshin Impact's Traveler is the only character who can change their main Element. They have access to Anemo, Geo, Electro, and Dendro, and that list is sure to grow as more content gets added to the game. Geo Traveler was introduced when Liyue was unlocked as an area, as well as being the first time you can change your Traveler's element.

Related: Genshin Impact: Best Build For Electro Traveler

Geo Traveler is unique in many ways, albeit reliant on having another Geo character who can shield since the buff you get from Geo Resonance increases your damage output significantly. With this in mind, there are two main ways to build the Geo Traveler that will benefit you the most, both of which are DPS-focused.

  • Weapons - Harbinger of Dawn, Primordial Jade Cutter
  • Artifact Sets - Four-piece Noblesse Oblige

The Geo Traveler will be best suited as a Burst Support. This means that they won't be your main active character, rather you'll want to swap to them to use their Elemental Skill and Burst, then change to your damage dealer. The prime source of damage and utility from the Geo Traveler will be using your Elemental Burst since it has such a low energy cost making it fairly spammable.

When using your Skill, you should always try to aim it instead of just tapping and letting the auto lock-on decide where to place it.

Holding down the Geo MC's Elemental Skill makes it appear faster and lets you control where it will land.

The idea behind this build is capitalising on the number of times you can fire off your Burst . The Elemental Burst will produce a massive shockwave, dealing AoE Geo damage. When used, it will form clusters of Geo crystals which act as Geo Constructs. This ability is excellent for pushing enemies away and blocking their line of sight. The Skill creates a large structure and deals Geo damage to anyone near it on impact and when destroyed.

Since the MC is fully free-to-play, you get all of their Constellation upgrades by completing the main Archon Quests in Liyue and delivering all the Geoculus to the Statue of the Seven. This is great for the Geo Traveler since Constellation One gives your Elemental Burst a Crit Rate buff to anyone within its field, while Constellation Four gives you a flat amount of energy whenever your Burst's shockwave hits an enemy.

Geo Resonance will increase your shield strength by 15 percent, while also giving a damage bonus to characters protected by a shield.

Additionally, attacking an enemy will reduce their Geo resistance by 20 percent.

Building around your Burst, you'll want to go for the four-piece Nobless Oblige Artifact set. This not only increases the damage of your Elemental Burst, but it will also provide an attack boost to other party members.

  • Weapons - Festering Desire, Harbinger of Dawn, Primordial Jade Cutter.
  • Artifact Sets - Two-piece Archaic Petra and two-piece Gladiator's Finale, or two-piece Nobless Oblige.

Building your Geo MC as a sub-DPS is a viable option here. Thanks to the low investment in Constellations, you can have a Constellation Six character just by playing. This means your Elemental Skill and Burst will benefit from the Constellations that increase Talent levels, making it easier for them to deal more damage.

The Geo Traveler is easier to build as a sub-DPS, but there's a ton of overlap here for them to deal enough damage to be considered the Main DPS.

This requires a lot more investment, like having a powerful five-star weapon and Zhongli, but it is still possible if you wanted to try.

As a sub-DPS, the Geo Traveler can hold their own on the field for a bit longer than only being used for their Burst. For this to work properly and effectively, you need another Geo character in the party , preferably one who can shield to take full advantage of the Geo Resonance party buff. This build will work wonders for you if you use Geo Traveler with either Noelle as your Main DPS or Zhongli as your shielder, for example.

Having Zhongli will allow you to use the Geo Traveler as your Main DPS. You'll not only have his shields which are the best in the game, but you'll also benefit from his Elemental Skill's Stone Steles reacting to the Traveler's Starfell Geo Constructs. You can place three of the MC's Geo structures at any time, and when a Stone Stele sends out a shockwave, this will ripple across all of them if they're in range, hitting multiple times and creating energy particles.

Depending on which weapon you use with a DPS Geo Traveler, you'll want to change your Artifact Set bonus.

Using Festering Desire means you lose out on overall damage due to the bonus stat. With that in mind, you'll want to capitalise on the weapon's Energy Recharge stat by going for a two-piece Nobless Oblige to get the Burst damage buff.

Pair Nobless with the two-piece Archaic Petra or two-piece Gladiator's Finale set.

Noelle is a great free-to-play character to pair with the Geo Traveler. The Traveler can be on-field to deal damage with their Skill, use their Burst and get some charged hits in. Then Noelle can soak up damage, restore any lost HP, and deal out some punishment thanks to the Geo Resonance. Geo Traveler can be an effective battery for Noelle in this composition as well.

If you're building Geo MC as a DPS of any flavour, you'll want to use the Festering Desire sword since it gives a significant damage boost to your Elemental Skill. With the Energy Recharge sub-stat, you'll also be able to use your Burst regularly.

There are a lot of crossovers here with stats, the biggest difference will be in the set bonus you go for depending on your build and weapon. These are the stats you'll want to focus on when choosing your Artifacts.

Burst Support Build

We recommend using a four-piece Nobless Oblige for this build.

You'll want to use a two-piece Archaic Petra and either the two-piece Nobless or a two-piece Gladiator's Finale.

The Traveler's Talents should be levelled equally, but you don't have to worry about getting Normal Attack up too much. If you're short on upgrade materials or talent books, level them up in this order:

  • Elemental Skill - Starfell Sword
  • Elemental Burst - Wake of Earth
  • Normal Attack

The Skill and Burst are most important, so figure out which one you use more and then prioritise it however it suits you more.

Genshin Impact Geo Traveler Guide: Best weapons, artifact sets and materials required for ascension

All you need to know about geo traveler, and the ways to unleash her maximum potential..

Genshin Impact Geo Traveler, Genshin Impact Geo Element rework

Genshin Impact is an adventure RPG game released by MiHoYo in 2020. In just a short time the game has become one of the most successful actions RPG titles ever to have been released in multiple titles. Tevyat is a vast region of seven nations and each nation has an associated archon that is tied to different visions. The visions are special elemental affinities in Genshin Impact. This includes the likes of Monstadt with Anemo, Liyue with Geo, and I nazuma with Electro . With every new region’s Statue of the Seven giving the main character (Lumine/Aether), an affinity from the element. In this Genshin Impact guide, we will talk about all you need to know about Geo Traveler, his/her builds, and the materials required for ascension.

Geo Traveler: Playstyle and skillset

Genshin Impact Geo Traveller Guide

The Traveler is a versatile character who can align with different elements and in the geo form is very good support for Geo main DPS. His ability to battery and provide Crit bonus makes him an invaluable asset in geo teams.

Geo Traveler’s Passive

  • 1st Ascension Passive: Reduces Starfell Sword’s CD by 2s.
  • 4th Ascension Passive: The final hit of a Normal Attack combo triggers a collapse, dealing 60% of ATK as AoE Geo DMG.

Geo Traveler’s Constellations

The best part of using the main character is that players have access to all their constellations. To activate a constellation players require a Memory of Immovable Crystals. The memory of Immovable Crystals are obtained as follows :

  • Reward from the quest Farewell, the Archaic Lord (Chapter I, Act II)
  • Reward from the quest A New Star Approaches (Chapter I, Act III)
  • Sold by Xingxi in Souvenir Shop, Mingxing Jewelry (4 Immovable Crystal for 225 Geo Sigils each)

Sets to farm for Geo Traveler

  • 2 pc Gladiators Finale/Shimenawa’s Reminiscence and 2 pc Archaic Petra : Archaic Petra provides 15% geo damage bonus which buffs both the elemental skill and burst while Gladiators Finale/Shimenawa’s Reminiscence provide 18% ATK bonus which increases damage of all three components of Geo MC’s kit.
  • 2 pc Archiac Petra and 2 pc Noblesse Oblige : Using 2 pc Noblesse Oblige paired with  Archaic Petra players can increase the geo damage and also increase
  • 4 pc Noblesse Oblige : The staple artifact for support characters, this set is only recommended for Geo MC if playing in a quick swap team where the sole purpose of the character is to provide crit buff with burst. Using 4 pc Noblesse would augment Geo MC’s burst damage and provide an ATK boost to all team members.
  • 2 pc Archaic Petra and 2 pc Noblesse Oblige : A balanced combination, Archaic Petra and Noblesse Oblige provide buffs to Geo MC that can be useful for both Main DPS and Support roles.

The high skill damage output paired with crit rate buff make Geo MC an enviable support character. While Geo MC also can do a good amount of damage with his normal attack he is more suited as a burst support character.

Normal Attack

Elemental skill or burst, best weapons for geo traveler in genshin impact.

For support Geo MC Primordial Jade Cutter, Mistspitter Reforged and Summit Shaper are the best 5-star options. Among the 4 stars, Festering Desire and Amenoma Kageuchi are the best options. At refinement 5 the three-star weapon, Harbinger of Dawn also provides high value but it requires the characters’ HP to be above 90% to optimize the damage.

For the main DPS Mistsplitter Reforged, Summit Shape r is the best 5-star option. Among 4 stars Blackcliff Longsword and The Flute are both good options.

Best Team Comps

Geo MC pairs well with almost all Geo characters in the game giving them Crit Rate buff and acting as a battery as well as activating Geo resonance. Zhongli , Ningguang , Albedo , and Noelle all benefit from having Geo MC in their team. Newly introduced, Arataki Itto also can utilize buffs from Geo MC along with the elemental particles that Geo MC generates as Itto is an energy-hungry character.

Genshin Impact Traveller (Geo) guide: weapons, artifacts, and more

Genshin Impact Traveller (Geo) guide: weapons, artifacts, and more

The Traveller may be a 5* character, but their Geo variant is sadly a little maligned. No major reactions and terrain creating abilities that can prove more hindrance than help put them in an awkward spot.

That said, if you are willing to put the time in - or just want to use your main character - there is a lot of creativity and power hidden within their kit. Here are the firm foundations you’ll want to start out.

Genshin Impact Traveller (Geo) guide

There’s an argument for most high-end Swords on the Traveller, but here are a few of the front runners:

Sword of Descension

Traveller geo genshin impact guide, traveller guide genshin

It’s hard not to talk about the Sword of Descension in regards to a Traveller build. Yes, it’s got good stats, but having a unique ability activatable only when it’s equipped by the Traveller will always make this Sword a high-priority choice for your main character. Generally speaking, it favours a damage-heavy build, but it’ll work for most playstyles.

Skyward Blade

Best weapons for traveller geo

If you do want to push for a more supportive build - which is generally easier to accomplish than a DPS build for the Geo Traveller - then Skyward Blade should be top of the priority list. Energy Recharge means more Wake of Earths, which means more battlefield terrain and more Crit Rate amps courtesy of Constellation Level 1. Use your burst, then get wailing on opponents with Sky-piercing Fang’s damage boosts, before switching out.

weapons for Traveller Geo

A jack-of-all-trades weapon that works well for either a DPS or support build. Chord means either a nice damage blast at the end of a burst combo for a supportive/quick-swap style of play or another source of damage if you want the Traveller to be more consistent DPS.

Favonius Sword

Traveller geo

Another good option for a build that wants to prioritise terrain control. Energy Recharge means Wake of Earth is up more often, and Windfall doubles down on that. While you can run Sacrificial Sword in a similar mindset, Wake of Earth is largely more valuable to get off cooldown, so Favonius Sword edges it out slightly.

best artifacts for traveller geo

A DPS focus for the Geo Traveller largely revolves around Gladiator’s Finale in various permutations. As always, a full 4-piece is very effective, but it’s a set in high demand. To get around that, going for 2-piece Noblesse Oblige to fill in the gaps, and add on to the wide-ranging AoE of the Traveller’s Elemental Burst can be a good choice, as can running 2-piece Archaic Petra for the added Geo DMG.

On the other end of the spectrum, a supportive Geo Traveller wants to look towards Full Archaic Petra for the potential 35% DMG bonus off crystalised shards (you’ll want to pre-apply elements for that crystalise), or full Noblesse Oblige to get even more value out of Wake of Earth. You can even run a 2/2 split between the two for more individual power, favouring a Burst Carry playstyle.

If you’re finding it difficult to gather enough of these upper-end artifacts, 2-piece Berserker plus a +18% ATK set is a good fallback for DPS, while full The Exile makes a good option for a more supportive focus.

Artifact Stats

With what artifacts you want in mind, here are the stats you want to be looking for on them:

DPS Stat Priority

  • Physical DMG Goblet (key)
  • Crit Rate (50~%+)
  • Energy Recharge

Support Stat Priority

  • Geo DMG Goblet (key)
  • Elemental Mastery

Play Patterns

The Geo Traveller isn’t the easiest character to play, partly because it’s only too easy to get in your own way.

Both their strength and their weakness is to create a lot of new battlefield terrain, quickly. Used creatively you can block off archers from firing with the walls of their Elemental Burst, and use their Elemental Skill to gain a height advantage and attack larger enemies while safe from their melee attacks.

Best artifacts for traveller geo

At their worst, they just get in the way, plain and simple. You suddenly find yourself cut off from your key target, or more irritatingly suddenly stuck climbing a meteorite you just summoned. It’s partly why the Geo Traveller isn’t that highly regarded.

If you have Constellation Level 1 (which is easy to acquire via progressing through the game) then being within the walls created by Wake of Earth ups your team’s Crit Rate, which is always a potent buff, and provides easier utility to play around than unpredictable terrain.

Another interesting interaction to keep your eyes on is the Constellation Level 2 ability, Rockcore meltdown, that causes damage when the meteorite created by Starfell Sword is destroyed. There are a few niche interactions where this can be really strong - notably when facing Andrius, as you can place a meteorite easily in his path when he charges midway through the fight multiple times.

As for teammates, the Traveller can work with most allies, though as a Geo user they don’t have any strong damaging Elemental Reactions. With that in mind, you can pair them up with Ningguang , Noelle or Zhongli in some combination to benefit from all the Geo energy flying around and charging up Elemental Bursts faster. Zhongli , in particular, synergises well with the Geo traveller, due to how his pillar resonates with the Geo constructs the Traveller can make.

And with that, your faithful Geo Protagonist is ready to rumble. Good luck with using all that terrain to your advantage!

Traveler will gain Geo power upon interracting with Statue of the Seven in Liyue. GeoTraveler usually used as Geo dps focusing on elemental burst.

Not recommended for endgame, Geo DPS is preffered.

For 2nd and 3rd option, you can replace 2 Gladiator’s Finale with 2 Shimenawa Reminiscence since both artifact have exact same 2 bonus set.

The best Genshin Impact Traveler (Geo) build

Learn how to put together the best possible Geo Traveler build in Genshin Impact

Want to learn how to create the best build for the Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact? The Traveler will gain access to the Geo element not long after you uncover Liyue on the world map in Genshin Impact . This is their second elemental vision, and you can then switch freely between Geo and Anemo whenever you interact with a Statue of the Seven in a corresponding nation.

The Geo Traveler is technically the only free-to-play Geo character in Genshin Impact, although in practice you'd have to actively work not to get Noelle . With the Geo meta riding high in Genshin Impact, knowing how to form a Geo-heavy team is no bad idea. Read on for our recommendations for building the Traveler (Geo) with their best party composition, weapons and artifacts, talent priority, and a full list of their required levelling materials.

How to build the Geo Traveler for sub-DPS/elemental support in Genshin Impact

Best weapon: primordial jade cutter.

4-star alternative: Favonius Sword

For the Geo Traveler, the Primordial Jade Cutter sword helps overcome their regrettably low base stats while also increasing their attack power. Wielders of Primordial Jade Cutters enjoy a 20% minimum bonus to their HP, and an ATK bonus equal to 1.2% of their max HP (which, happily, has already been significantly boosted by the sword).

In the absence of a 5-star weapon, however, the Traveler's old standard the Favonius Sword remains a solid choice. Landing CRITs with this sword equipped has a high chance of generating an elemental particle that will reduce the cooldown of the Traveler's Geo skills.

Best artifacts: Archaic Petra x2, Noblesse Oblige x2

  • Archaic Petra 2-piece set bonus: Geo DMG +15%
  • Noblesse Oblige 2-piece set bonus: Elemental Burst DMG +20%

If you're leaning in to the Geo Traveler's sub-DPS duties, then a mix-and-match approach between the Archaic Petra and Noblesse Oblige sets makes the most of their ability to deal elemental damage. On the other hand, if you're using the Geo Traveler more for their elemental support capacities, consider going all-in on either set.

At 4 pieces, the Archaic Petra offers a 35% DMG bonus for the entire party whenever the Crystallize reaction produces an elemental shard; while a 4-piece Noblesse Oblige set grants a 20% boost to all party members' ATK for 12 seconds after the Geo Traveler uses their Elemental Burst.

To make the absolute most of this set-up, aim for the following stats and substats on the Geo Traveler's artifacts:

  • Circlet of Logos: CRITs
  • Sands of Eon: ATK
  • Goblet of Eonothem: Geo DMG
  • Substats: Energy Recharge, CRITs, ATK

Talent priority: Starfell Sword (Elemental Skill)

Secondary: Wake of Earth (Elemental Burst)

Much like in the Anemo Traveler build, it's a good idea to focus on their Elemental Skill first and foremost, thanks to its usefulness in both combat and exploration. However, with their artifact bonuses in this build leaning heavily on the Elemental Burst, this is a strong second choice (especially if you're focusing on their elemental support capabilities).

Uniquely amongst all Genshin Impact characters, the Traveler does not possess a passive utility talent. Here is a full list of the Traveler's Geo talents:

  • Foreign Rockblade (Normal Attack):
  • Normal Attack: Performs up to 5 rapid strikes.
  • Charged Attack: Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash 2 rapid sword strikes.
  • Plunging Attack: Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact.
  • Starfell Sword (Elemental Skill): The Traveler disgorges a meteorite from the depths of the earth, dealing AoE Geo DMG. The meteorite is considered a Geo Construct, and can be climbed or used to block attacks. Hold to adjust the skill's positioning.
  • Wake of Earth (Elemental Burst): Energizing the Geo elements deep underground, the Traveler sets off expanding shockwaves, launching surrounding opponents back and dealing AoE Geo DMG. A stone wall is erected at the edges of the shockwave which is considered a Geo Construct, and may be used to block attacks.
  • Shattered Darkrock (1st Ascension Passive): Reduces Starfell Sword's cooldown by 2 seconds.
  • Frenzied Rockslide (4th Ascension Passive): The final hit of a Normal Attack combo triggers a collapse, dealing 60% of ATK as AoE Geo DMG.

Party composition

  • DPS: Xiangling
  • Sub-DPS: Xingqiu
  • Sub-DPS/Support: Geo Traveler
  • Shield/Support: Noelle

5-star alternative: Zhongli replacing Noelle on shield support

Geo supporting characters are extremely versatile, counterintuitively thanks to their reduced possibilities for reacting with other elements. A duo of Geo supports allows for a resonance that passively increases the whole party's shield and opens up more possibilities for blunt damage. You can boost the former even further by pairing the Geo Traveler up with a Geo shield specialist: Noelle and Zhongli are both very good in this capacity.

For the leading DPS duo I recommend picking any two characters whose elements react together for extra damage, and can furthermore form Crystallize with Geo. Xiangling and Xingqiu are something of a dream team in this regard: both available at 4-star rarity (Xiangling can even be obtained without touching the gacha), they pack a strong punch individually and can work together to trigger Melt for up to double damage.

How to level up the Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact

To fully level up any one of the Geo Traveler's talents, you'll need to collect the following materials. Note that you'll need to do all this three times if you want to triple crown the Geo Traveler's active talents; and, furthermore, that talent levelling does not carry over between the Traveler's various elemental forms.

Note that the Anemo and Geo Traveler builds have the same talent levelling requirements, but you still need to treat their talents and levels as completely separate (which includes collecting all these materials individually for both elements, unfortunately.)

Constellations

Because there are no duplicate copies of the Traveler available to wish for in the gacha or purchase from Paimon's store, you need to use a unique method to obtain their Constellations. For the Geo Traveler, this means collecting and consuming a level-up material called Memory of Immovable Crystals .

There are only six Memories of Immovable Crystals in the entire game, which luckily is just enough to reach the Traveler's final Geo Constellation. They are obtained in the following ways: two are granted for completing Acts II and III of Chapter I of the main questline; while the other four can be purchased for 225 Geo Sigils each from the Souvenir Shop in Liyue.

Here's a list of all the Traveler's Geo constellations and what they do:

  • Invincible Stonewall (C1): Party members within the radius of Wake of Earth have their CRIT Rate increased by 10% and have increased resistance against interruption.
  • Rockcore Meltdown (C2): When the meteorite created by Starfell Sword is destroyed, it will also explode, dealing additional AoE Geo DMG equal to the amount of damage dealt by Starfell Sword.
  • Will of the Rock (C3): Increases the Level of Wake of Earth by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Reaction Force (C4): The shockwave triggered by Wake of Earth regenerates 5 Energy for every opponent hit. A maximum of 25 Energy can be regenerated in this manner at any one time.
  • Meteorite Impact (C5): Increases the Level of Starfell Sword by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Everlasting Boulder (C6): The barrier created by Wake of Earth lasts 5 seconds longer. The meteorite created by Starfell Sword lasts 10 seconds longer.

Now that you know all about how to build the Geo Traveler in Genshin Impact, you might be curious about how they compare to some of the other Geo characters in the game. All Geo support characters are extremely tough, so for more solid 4-star choices, definitely considering giving Gorou and Yun Jin some consideration.

Genshin Impact Traveler Geo DPS and Support Build Guide

by Nikakosa

Starting off, Anemo Traveler & Geo Traveler Builds are generally the same. Following the pattern of stronger Normal & Charged Attacks, while bolstering the overall dmg that their Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst do. Let’s jump into it.

———————————————————————————

~~ TL;DR ~~

————————————-

~ Geo DPS ~

Weapon: Skyward Blade (5*)(P2P), The Black Sword (4*), Fillet Blade (3*)(F2P)

Artifacts: Gladiator’s Finale (4) OR Gladiator’s Finale (2) & Archaic Petra (2)

~ Geo Support ~

Weapon: The Flute (4*), Fillet Blade (3*)

Artifacts: Noblesse Oblige (2) & The Exile (2) OR

Noblesse Oblige (4) OR The Exile (4)

~~ Geo DPS ~~

I recommend using one of the following weapons:

Skyward Blade (5*), The Black Sword(4*), Fillet Blade (3*)

Skyward Blade

Main Stat: Attack

Sub-Stat: Energy Recharge

Following after my Anemo Traveler guide, I recommend Skyward blade to maximize Traveler’s DMG potential through Crit’s and it’s fantastic effect, which is more obtainable thanks to its Sub-Stat. The effect increases a plethora of different stats after an Elemental Burst is used. Including: Movement Speed (10%), Attack Speed (10%), and Normal and Charged Attack DMG by 20% for 12s.

geo traveller guide

“ Crit Rate increased by 4/5/6/7/8%. Gains Skypiercing Might upon using Elemental Burst: Increases Movement SPD by 10%, increases ATK SPD by 10%, and increases the DMG of Normal and Charged Attack hits by 20/25/30/35/40% for 12s. “

The Black Sword

Sub-Stat: Crit Rate

The Black Sword is a Battle Pass exclusive weapon that is extremely strong. Boosting DMG dealt by Normal and Charged Attacks by 20%, while also allowing for consistent and decent heals. 60% of ATK as HP When Normal and Charged Attacks score a CRIT Hit. This is perfect for any Sword user as it allows them to sustain themselves and deal increases consistent DMG.

geo traveller guide

“ Increases DMG dealt by Normal and Charged Attacks by 20/25/30/35/40%. Additionally, regenerates 60/70/80/90/100% of ATK as HP when Normal and Charged Attacks score a CRIT hit. This effect can occur once every 5s. “

Fillet Blade

Sub-Stat: Attack %

Fillet Blade can help Traveler deal extra damage through it’s effect. While also increasing their Base Attack to deal more devastating attacks. I recommend the Fillet Blade overall because it can deal that consistent extra dmg at a 50% chance. It is also a rather free to play weapon. Even though it is achieved through rolls, it being a 3* means that the drop rate is quite frequent.

geo traveller guide

“ On hit, has 50% chance to deal 240/280/320/360/400% ATK DMG to a single enemy. Can only occur once every 15/14/13/12/11s. “

~ Artifacts ~

I recommend using the following Artifact sets for the Geo DPS Build:

Gladiator’s Finale & or Archaic Pertra

Gladiator’s Finale

Sub-Stat wanted:

ATK / ATK / Physical DMG Bonus / Geo DMG Bonus

Gladiator’s Finale will bolster Traveler’s Attack by 18% at (2). This will seriously increase the amount of dmg they can do. At (4) Normal Attacks will have their dmg increased by 35%. This additive to the already very high dmg Elemental Skill, will make it an even deadlier attack! While also allowing for more consistent dmg from their Normal Attacks.

geo traveller guide

“ (2) Atk +18%

(4) If the wielder of this artifact set uses a Sword, Claymore or Polearm, increases their Normal Attack DMG by 35%. “

Archaic Petra

The reason I recommend Archaic Petra is because while you’ll still be using Normal and Charged attacks for your main consistent DMG, their Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst are DEADLY talents that can create spacing and deal significant damage to enemies around them.

geo traveller guide

“ (2) Geo DMG Bonus +15%

(4) Upon obtaining a crystal created through a Geo Elemental Reaction, all party members gain 35% RES to that particular element for 10s. Only one form of Elemental RES can be gained in this manner at any one time. “

~~ Geo Support ~~

I highly recommend using this weapon on for Traveler Geo Support:

The Flute (4*), Fillet Blade (3*)

Sub-Stat: ATK %

The Flute will help increase the overall DMG that Traveler will do thanks to its Sub-Stat. Also allowing for rather decent dmg through its effect. Allowing for consistent DMG to surrounding enemies while you deal big DMG with your Main DPS.

geo traveller guide

“ Normal or Charged Attacks grant a Harmonic on hits. Gaining 5 Harmonics triggers the power of music and deals 100/125/150/175/200% ATK DMG to surrounding enemies. Harmonics last up to 30s, and a maximum of 1 can be gained every 0.5s. “

The artifact sets I recommend are:

Noblesse Oblige, Archaic Petra, & The Exile

Noblesse Oblige

ATK % / Geo DMG Bonus / ATK %

Noblesse Oblige will increase the DMG output of their Elemental Burst by 20%. Geo Reactions aren’t really all that great, but their DMG as a whole using Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst are pretty good. Increasing that DMG just adds to the potential as a support. (4) Noblesse Oblige is a decent choice as well. As it will allow for the teams ATK to be buffed by 20% after Elemental Burst is used.

geo traveller guide

“ (2) Increases Elemental Mastery by 80.

(4) After using Elemental Skill, Increases all party members’ Elemental Mastery by 120 for 8s. “

The reason I recommend Archaic Petra is because you’ll be mainly using their Geo Elemental Skill and Burst. This will increase the DMG enemies take by increasing their Geo DMG by 15%. I do not recommend using (4) Archaic Petra, as it will barely benefit you. However, It can be used if needed. (For tanking more dmg of a specific element.)

ATK % /  Geo DMG Bonus / ATK %

The Exile (2) promotes their Energy Recharge rate. Allowing for more consistent Elemental Burst usage. While (4) will provide 2 energy for other party members every 2s for 6s, when an Elemental Burst is used. I would strongly recommend The Exile be used in tandem with either of the two above. As that would provide the best support for your main DPS.

geo traveller guide

“ (2) Energy Recharge +20%

(4) Using an Elemental Burst regenerates 2 Energy for other party members every 2s for 6s. This effect cannot stack. “

~~ Conclusion ~~

While I mainly use Geo Traveler as a Support, They can easily be used as a F2P optional Main DPS. I would avoid using them as a main stay DPS, and try and focus on someone who can benefit the team more. However, As I see it Traveler is more of a main support to the party. However, I have seen some wacky Traveler DMG on YouTube. Be sure to look those up if you’re curious. Tis just my opinion though!

Genshin Impact: Geo Travel Diary Commission Guide

Genshin Impact players can find the steps required to unlock the Geo Archon Anecdotes Daily Commission achievement in this short guide.

In Genshin Impact there are a wide variety of daily commissions for players to complete across the game's three regions. While the majority of these commissions will task Genshin Impact players with defeating a set number of enemies, there are a handful of daily commissions that are completely devoid of combat.

In the Geo Travel Diary daily commission, players are tasked with learning the history of the Geo Archons from Musheng in Liyue Harbor. Like the Pirates daily commission , there is a specific achievement tied to the daily commission called "Geo Archon Anecdotes", which is awarded to players when they have listened to all four available stories about the Geo Archons from Musheng. Because of the number of available stories, players will have to receive and complete the daily commission a total of four times in order to unlock the achievement.

RELATED: Genshin Impact: Poety Exchange Commission Guide

After receiving the daily commission, players will be asked to speak with Musheng, who can be found in the west of Liyue harbor. Once players interact with Musheng, he will ask players if they wish to learn about the Geo Lord , and tasks them with submitting a prop that he can use in his story. Depending on the item that players submit to Musheng to use a prop, he will recite a different story making it necessary for players to keep track of what stories they have already heard in order to not waste any time unlocking the achievement.

There are a variety of items that players can submit in order to hear each of four stories from Musheng that are divided into branches. The first branch, God of History, is unlocked by submitting: Apple, Berry, Bird Egg, Carrot, Flaming Flower Stamen, Horsetail, Jueyun Chili, Lotus Head, Matsutake, Mint, Mist Flower, Corolla, Mushroom, Pinecone, Qingxin, Radish, Silk Flower, Snapdragon, Sunsettia, Sweet Flower or Violet Grass.

The Second branch, God of the Stove, is unlocked by submitting: Cor Lapis, Crystal Chunk, Electro Crystal, Iron Chunk, Noctilucous Jade, or White Iron Chunk . The Third branch, God of Wealth, is unlocked by submitting: Almond Tofu, Black-Back Perch Stew, Jade Parcel, Jewelry Soup, Jueyun Chili Chicken, Matsutake Meat Roll, Mora Meat, SquirrelFish, Stir-Fried Filet, or Zhongyuan Chop.

The fourth and final story branch, The Groundbreaker, is unlocked by submitting a Glaze Lily to Musheng. After Musheng has completed reciting his story to the player, they will receive the typical 10 primogem reward , in addition to a document relating to the story they just heard.

These documents, which can be found in the player's inventory, are an excellent way of keeping track of what was the last story they heard in the commission questline. Unfortunately, when players hear a new story from Musheng it will also remove any of the other previously received documents from the questline in their inventory. Players should consult their inventory prior to speaking with Musheng so that they aren't repeating the same story twice.

Like all daily commissions in Genshin Impact , receiving the Geo Travel Diary commission is completely random. As a result, players are likely to spend a significant amount of time in-game before they are lucky enough to receive this daily commission a total of four times. However, with careful planning, players can complete the questline with ease.

Genshin Impact  is available for Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5, with a Switch version in development.

How to explore Grenada, from rum distilleries to rainforests

Celebrating its 50th year of independence in 2024, the verdant island of Grenada steps into the limelight as a land of mona monkeys and artisanal rum.

Monkeys, monkeys everywhere. These are Old World mona monkeys — weighing around 11lbs and groomed as if having come from the hair salon. Their body fur is coffee brown, their chipmunk-like cheeks covered in bushy white tufts. Those closest sniff the air, displaying masks of bare skin around their eyes, making them look like miniature Dick Turpins. They act like the highwayman, too. Watchful, hungry and with slim pickpocket fingers, I fear they’re here to rob my lunch.

“The Mona is one of the few monkey species in the Caribbean,” says Jeremy, our guide, as he surveys their gang hideout in the treetops. “They act like they own the place too.” Even eyed from a distance, at the far end of a track through an overgrown canopy, it’s clear they have swagger. Spend a few moments watching them and it feels — briefly — as though they’re policing the rainforest, tails swinging like batons, as we try to lift the veil on their natural world.

The Grenada experience begins from the get-go and, this year, the country is marking its 50th anniversary of independence, after it transitioned from UK rule in February 1974. Five centuries before that, Grenada was first sighted by Christopher Columbus while sailing from Sanlúcar, Spain, on his third Transatlantic voyage to conquer the New World. The Italian named the island Concepción, a hat tip to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, mother of Jesus, but never set foot on its shores. For Columbus, suffering from the relapsing arthritis that is said to eventually have killed him, another week at sea awaited before he instead landed on Hispaniola. For me, landing close to the rolling waves of Grand Anse Beach, it’s a far more straightforward arrival from the airport in a minibus.

Out of all the islands in the Lesser Antilles, Grenada is the near-forgotten speck at the bottom tip of the banana curve. This is a country neglected by most visitors to the region   — compared to big hitters such as St Lucia, Barbados, Antigua and the Virgin Islands   — and it’s a land more reliant on agriculture and export crops like nutmeg and mace than the tourist industry. On first impression, it’s all the better for it. Tourism is still developing at a relatively grassroots level here and it feels distinctly authentic.

We begin our first day on the road to Grand Etang National Park, with the asphalt uncoiling into the island’s volcanic interior and lumpy hills. It’s a glorious autumn morning in the island capital, St George’s: the sun breaking the clouds above the hewn battlements of Fort George is a hymn for the day ahead. The rainforest, meanwhile, is a thick pelt of dense, dark green. It’s a wild place and, as we move from the suburbs past gas storage tanks onto a mountain road, looming bamboo begins to block out the rippling blue sky. There’s no lack of competition. Eucalyptus, teak, gum, guava and rainbow trees creep towards the verges, almost shielding our entry. It’s no prison, but our progress is slow.

geo traveller guide

The problem is that our minibus, with loose exhaust and coughing engine, doesn’t have enough power to accelerate uphill, especially with the air conditioning chasing the stifling heat away. “Windows open,” yells Jeremy from the wheel, as he turns off the air-con. He doesn’t waste words, I come to learn, and so our writhing bus becomes a safari vehicle and the little details outside quickly become more exciting: our nostrils full of earth, woodsmoke and diesel, before we head into an interior laden with foilage. An out-of-tune steel band would make less rattle and hum than we do. As we lurch uphill, vendors at tarp-covered stalls appear in whizz-by auditions wielding pineapples, breadfruit and mangoes.

Grenada is oval-shaped, almost like the cacao fruit on which many of its farmers so heavily depend, and, at the island’s heart, is the seed of so much of this growth: Grand Etang Lake, a mineral-rich crater basin, which empties into the upper headwaters of steep-sided ravines and the tributary of the raging Great River. The air is heavy when we step out at the road’s highest point, 1,910ft above sea level. Just east of Grenada’s tallest volcanoes, we have views of the Caribbean Sea, the shallow curve of Grand Mal Bay and the wonderfully named Mount Qua Qua, framed in forest green, views that Columbus would have kicked himself for missing.

As I wander the trail to Grand Etang Lake, the landscape — what’s here and what isn’t — fills my mind. In recent decades, Grenada has been hit by several tropical storms, including Hurricane Ivan, which caused widespread damage during the 2004 season. When its westward jog across the island began, palms were scythed and the national park’s high forest canopy toppled. The good news is that species are recuperating and every candlewood or mahogany tree in the forest is knee-deep in its own recovery, with a mosaic of broad low buttresses on the forest floor now reaching from shadow into light. At the same time, the sight of the rainforest parting and the sky dissolving into the crater lake fills my vision, the silvery surface merging with the regrouping clouds as I reach the water’s edge. Somewhere, the monkeys are still looking on. It’s like being in my own Indiana Jones movie.

In the days that follow, we peel back the many layers of Grenada, as if we were gradually dehusking a coconut. There’s much more for us to see and so we drive on, searching. A common urge is to wallow on one of Grenada’s 45 beaches but I’m drawn instead to the colour of the deep-green highlands, the fruit bowl jumble of the markets and the burnt umber of the chocolate factories.

Even so, appearances of cocoa bean plantations on Caribbean islands are increasingly rare nowadays. Here, they appear fleetingly by roadsides, almost in a state of stasis, at odds with the satisfyingly fat heavyweight producers of the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Ecuador. And it seems today that the Grenada cocoa farmers’ raison d’être is to provide a more refined response to their supposed rivals. Almost as if their story is worthy of a more romantic reimagining.

At least, I sense this is the case in St Andrew parish at Jouvay, a low-key production site built tight into a cradle of cacoa trees from where seeds are effortlessly harvested. It’s empty when I arrive, except for Nolan, a tour guide who talks little, but laughs a lot. “We’re just a tiny dot on the map, hard to find, but you get the best chocolate in the world right here,” he says, cackling.

The work has finished for the day and so we have the run of the factory to ourselves during our spontaneous visit. The building is almost a relic, with a ragged profile, empty wooden floors, bare-stone walls and basement level that leads to silent sheds of drying racks, where millions of raw cocoa beans the colour of dark chocolate huddle in the dark. Tomorrow, they’ll be wheeled back out into the morning sun, like a tanning shop on steroids. The soundtrack, Nolan says, is always the soft tambourine rattle of the seeds being raked.

Eventually we come to the barrows for storing cacao pods. Nolan picks one out. There, he says, driving a knife into the seed to break the skin before ringing the blade around its midriff — one swift move and it opens like a Fabergé egg to reveal a gelatinous white centre and clump of beans. He looks happy. “We make cocoa tea from this,” he says, handing me the pod to smell —the scent is musty, almost sour, and sticks to my palm. “It’s like Viagra and an island bestseller.” He cackles again, slapping me on the shoulder.

Like cacao, sugarcane processing was a popular industry across the Lesser Antilles, along with its byproduct, molasses. River Antoine Rum Distillery in St Patrick parish, with its waterwheel-powered machinery and cane crushers, is Grenada’s most historic warehouse, opening in the island’s north in 1785 shortly after the island was ceded to British colonisers by the French. But on my last afternoon, I instead drop into Clarke’s Court, and nowhere, I think, captures the spirit of Grenadian hospitality — of informality, indulgence and intoxication — quite like it.

In the company of guide Danny, I join a tour of the distillery’s corrugated hangar, its belly opening up to a skeleton of oxide-red piping, gantries, tired vats and tanks — some looking salvaged from a scrapyard. There is a distinct feeling of merriment in the air despite it being technically a work day. Rum is an integral part of Caribbean culture, used across the region as a tonic to baptise newborns, remember the dead and chase demons away — and it’s not hard to appreciate the sense of open-armed gesture and friendship born from this marvellous liquid sunshine.

Rum now in hand, I can taste that warmth too. The intense vanilla spirit glosses over my tongue and throat, the alcohol instantly affecting me at Nick’s Barrel House, next to the factory floor and where merchandise is sold to visitors and calypso music plays on TV. The sweet melodies fit the mood and there’s an undercurrent of deep satisfaction as the browns, coppers and caramels of the different aged rums are swirled in glasses like newly mixed paints. Around me, locals empty shots of nutmeg, cinnamon and hibiscus-imbued rum, twirling and laughing.

Later, back in St George’s, I think of the other Caribbean islands I know — Jamaica, Barbados, the Dominican Republic — and of all the tourists there, hurrying around each island impatiently in search of their own little slice of paradise. It could be the evening’s sun, which glows golden before dropping from the horizon like a coin into a slot, but I look back towards the mist-wreathed rainforest, volcanoes, winding roads and tropical pleasures and watch for a while, hopeful that the island will continue to thrive throughout the next 50 years. In Grenada, it feels like history is happening right now.
