SERVE Youth Mission Trips for Groups

SERVE is typically a one-week mission trip for teens in the United States or Canada that introduces middle school (Grades 6-8) or high school (Grades 9-12) students to spreading the gospel through missional living and confronting issues of justice. Each all-inclusive missions trip experience is planned with individual and corporate benefit in mind. SERVE provides hands-on service that is people-focused, giving SERVE trips a very personal and long-term impact.

The week typically starts with fun teambuilding and get-to-know-you activities. Each workday starts with morning devotions before teams go off to their work sites, where the emphasis is to connect with the people you are serving and share God’s love. Every night the students are led in worship and the speaker for the week brings a message related to the theme. These sessions are challenging and faith-building. Each evening also includes free time for games, sports, or hanging out with new friends. One day of the week is a ‘Day Away’ where everybody has a fun day off together at the beach, local theme park, cottage, or local attraction.  You can find more information about SERVE in our FAQ section here .

SERVE is not just a week-long summer youth mission trip. It’s about a transformation that lasts a lifetime!

High School Mission Trips

High School Mission Trips

High School SERVE mission trips are week-long (7 day) mission experiences open to students who have completed grade 8 through graduating seniors. The community-focused environment of SERVE encourages students’ passion for their own congregation and community, so the impact of SERVE continues long after the high school students return home.

Middle School Mission Trips

Middle School Mission Trips

Middle school sites are not available for SERVE 2024.  If you’re interested in hosting a future middle school SERVE site, please contact us!

Middle School SERVE mission trips are shorter mission experiences open to students who have completed grade 6 through students who have completed grade 8.

Youth group mission trips.

Mission trips and other faith-forming experiences are proven to be the #1 way to keep teens active in the church and growing in their faith . SERVE youth mission trips for teens are  all-inclusive, 5-7 day service trips for Middle School or High School students . The students  go into communities in the USA and Canada  to care for and restore their world in an environment where they’ll encounter the concepts of justice and missional living. More than just a week-long short-term mission trip over the summer, SERVE is a faith-forming experience where the communities, congregations, and students who are involved  all  experience lasting transformation.

Impact of Hosting a Teen Mission Trip

Students on SERVE mission trips are helping to transform communities and congregations across North America (think of them as domestic mission trips). Together, ThereforeGo and local churches work together to share the love of Jesus Christ with those in our own backyards. SERVE is more than just a week-long missions trip for teens ; these young adults will walk away with an experience that will have a long-term impact on your local community and the people that live, work, and worship in them. We can use help hosting  youth group mission trips in 2024 .

“SERVE started a momentum in our congregation that is like a mini revival. I’ll have to determine how to make the most of it throughout the rest of the year.”

Who can participate (ex. how old do you have to be)?

We get this question a lot: “How old do you have to be to go on mission trips with ThereforeGo?”

High School SERVE Mission Trips : Any student who has completed grade 8 through graduating seniors in the spring of 2024.

Middle School SERVE Mission Trips : Any student who has completed grades 6 through 8.

Adult Leaders : Adult leaders must be 21 years or older. See more information under the question “What are adult leader expectations (and how many are needed)?”

Do I have to be in a youth group or can I come by myself? Our current SERVE model does not accommodate individual participants. For more information  contact us .

How do I find a mission trip?

Find SERVE mission trip locations here on our trip locations page .

When choosing a mission trip, we recommend taking the following factors into consideration.

  • Dates : It’s important to figure out what dates work for your church and the largest number of people in your youth group.
  • Location : Do you want to drive? Are you willing to fly? Transportation can be one of the most complex factors to a mission trip so it is important to factor in how far and by which method you are willing to travel.
  • Capacity : If you have a large group (more than 15 people) we recommend that you look for a SERVE site that has a capacity of 60 or more. We have found that SERVE sites are more successful if we can place 3 or more different churches at any one site.

What’s the registration process?

After you’ve picked a site ( see mission trip destinations ), follow this process to register:

STEP ONE : Place a $50 deposit per participant to save spots at a particular SERVE site. You’ll just need the number of youth and adult leader spots for your group. Approximately 1-3 weeks after you submit this form, you’ll receive a site confirmation letter by email confirming which site your group has been placed at and providing you with the access code that your group will use to complete your paperwork in Step 2.  Save your spots starting November 1 at Noon (EST)!

STEP TWO :  After you place your deposit and receive your site confirmation letter with your access code, you can then  complete your online registration for each participant individually. You must complete your paperwork by April 1. All registrations completed between April 1 and April 15 will be charged with a $25 late fee.  All paperwork completed after April 15 will be charged a $50 late fee.

STEP THREE: Payment in full is due on May 1 for all SERVE sites.  Background checks are due for all adults on May 15.  For more information on the ThereforeGo background check policy, click here .

Is there still room at a particular site (trip destination) or is it full?

Check the  site description page  or  contact us  to find out whether there are still openings available at a particular site.

Can 19 & 20-year-olds come along?

Our current SERVE mission trips model does not accommodate 19 & 20-year-old participants. For more information contact us .

What are adult leader expectations (and how many are needed)?

How Many Adult Leaders Are Needed for a  SERVE Mission Trip ? One adult (21 years of age or older) is required for every five youth. At least one adult of each gender (if students of each gender are attending).

Adult Leader Responsibilities

  • Serve as small group leaders.
  • Act as work site overseers.
  • All adults are required to attend the entire week with  SERVE .
  • Driving their small group to and from work sites throughout the week.
  • Be safety-conscious at all times.
  • General crowd control and spiritual coaching throughout the week. Download the leader handbook (PDF).

Other Details All Adult Leaders (21 and older) are required to complete and submit a current background check to the ThereforeGo Ministries office. To be considered current for the 2024 SERVE season, the check must be completed after June 15, 2021. See how to submit a background check here .

What do small groups look like during SERVE?

The host team will place participants in small work/prayer groups, trying to not have more than two people from the same church in the same group in order to promote community among the entire SERVE Site.

What’s the SERVE Site Confirmation?

1-3 weeks after you place a deposit for a SERVE Site, you will receive (by email) a site confirmation letter with instructions to  complete your online paperwork  (if you already have received this letter,  click here ).

Where can I get more information about my SERVE Site?

The Host Team for your SERVE Site will be sending out a welcome letter which will include more details about the week and a packing list. You can expect to receive the information approximately 30 days before your mission experience begins. You can find out who your Host Church is by going to the site’s page ( one of the locations found here ).

Do mission trips really help?

We believe that whether mission trips help or not depends on the type of mission trip you have. Real lasting impact is never accomplished in a week. This is why we partner with local churches to provide our SERVE mission trips! All of our sites are run by volunteers who live and work in these communities all year long.

We believe that SERVE mission trips provide a two-fold impact:

  • Become doers of the Word and not hearers only
  • Become justice conscious, meeting needs while being introduced to the root causes and concerns
  • Grow in their personal faith
  • Continue serving others when they return to their home church and community
  • Identify community assets and needs
  • Provide an infusion of energy to their mission, vision, and outreach efforts
  • Help deepen personal relationships and partnerships within their local community. Our host sites are encouraged to partner with ministries that they have an existing relationship with and allow this group of teenagers to bring energy and excitement to the long term partnership.

What tips do you have for traveling with students?

Traveling with Minors:  Any adult who is not a parent or guardian should have written permission to supervise the child from the parent or guardian, as well as the child’s identification, and carry it with them. A letter would also facilitate entry for any one parent traveling with their children. This permission letter should contain addresses and telephone numbers where the parent or guardian can be reached. ( Example Consent to Travel Form  – find  more forms and resources here )  It is strongly recommended that the letter is notarized.

Passport and travel requirements for U.S. and Canadian citizens vary according to the country where you are going. For more information about passport and travel requirements you may check the websites below:

Canada Border Services Agency —  www.cbsa.gc.ca Foreign Affairs Canada —  www.travel.gc.ca U.S. State Department —  www.travel.state.gov U.S. Customs and Border Protection —  www.cbp.gov

*15-passenger vans are not allowed into Ontario due to MTO restrictions

It is your group’s responsibility to have the correct documentation if you are crossing a border.

Keep It Safe:  Make photocopies of your passport’s identification page and/or of your identification cards, and keep the copies separate from the original when you travel. For added security, leave a copy with a friend or relative at home.

Be Mindful:  As COVID policies and requirements continue to change, before crossing an international border, be sure to look up the current COVID vaccine or testing requirements for entry and exit.

For more information,  contact us .

Are there resources for sending (going) churches?

There are  numerous resources  for your church to use in the planning and preparation for your trip.  Visit our online Resource Box!

Are there scholarships available?

Need-based scholarships are available for SERVE. Download a  scholarship form  and/or  contact us for more information. Deadline for request is April 1, 2024.

What forms of payment are accepted and how do I make them?

All SERVE payments are in USD.

ThereforeGo Ministries accepts check/cheque, money order, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover payments .

Payments can be made three ways:

  • Online through the registration system
  • Over the phone by calling ThereforeGo at 616.241.5616 x3038
  • By mail.  Checks/cheques should be made out to ThereforeGo Ministries  and mailed to:

ThereforeGo Ministries Attn: SERVE 4695 44th Street SE Suite 130 Kentwood, MI 49512

Contact us if you have additional questions.

What about insurance?

ThereforeGo Ministries carries secondary health insurance and liability insurance. All insurance claims must be submitted to the participant’s individual insurance first. ThereforeGo’s insurance will begin where the participant’s insurance ends for any medical expenses incurred while at the site. If a participant does not have insurance coverage, ThereforeGo’s insurance becomes the primary coverage. Participants are not covered while traveling to or from the youth mission experience. Check with your insurance provider to verify your coverage in the state/province/country where you are traveling, and bring a copy of your insurance card along .

What’s the transportation policy?

Registration fees do  not  include transportation to and from sites (except where noted). Any exception is noted in the site descriptions as “on-site transportation included” (find the site description on  one of the locations found here ).

Each group must provide a vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) to transport an equal number of participants during the duration of the mission trip. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please  contact us  to discuss options and additional charges.

What’s the cancellation policy?

Please note that while we were blessed to be able to refund all deposits for SERVE 2020, moving forward all deposits will be non-refundable and not transferable to your remaining balance due.

In the case of extreme weather, disaster, or COVID cancellation: TGM has your group’s safety in mind as we host events. If we are unable to host an event due to weather conditions, national disaster, or because current COVID guidelines set by government agencies prohibit TGM from continuing a SERVE experience, deposits cannot be refunded. Refunds of final balance payments will be made only if properties and/or locations refund TGM for these costs. If an event is hosted as scheduled and your group cancels or reduces numbers due to weather conditions or other concerns, all payments are non-refundable.

If a registrant or immediate family member has an emergency prior to or during the summer mission experience, TGM will do what we can to refund a significant portion of the money.

If you request a change of location or substitution of participants within 30 days of the start date, an additional $50 may be charged to cover administrative costs.

Sponsor a Child, Strengthen a Family

We’re fighting big problems worldwide.

Family Strengthening

Adventures in Missions is about more than short-term trips, though we do love them. All of our trips globally plugin to great long-term programs. These programs  create the perfect environment for short trips to actually make an impact. Our sponsorship programs are also keeping the end-goal in mind, they  are about so much more than providing food and letters to children.

$45 per month meets immediate tangible needs by providing nutritious food and clean water. It also sustains long-term transformation by providing discipleship and opportunities to engage in programming to strengthen families as a whole that will ripple into the community for generations to come!

Sponsoring a child with Adventures has the potential to transform and strengthen a family so they can pay it forward to their community.

Transformative experiences with god, missions that leave you marked.

Ideas For Youth Group Mission Trips

MISSION TRIP IDEAS FOR YOUR YOUTH GROUP

Youth mission trips are a fantastic way to reach out to communities, to serve others, and to help our youth understand that serving is not about rescuing others, it’s about building relationships. A youth group mission trip is not a rescue trip. Instead, it’s an avenue that takes us on a journey, getting to know life through the lens of others. It’s meant to be a humbling experience where we get to employ our gifts and talents and render them to those that need it most.

Knowing this can help you determine the kind of work that you would want to pursue and who you want to serve. Narrow down what kind of mission you’d like to participate in. Mission trips can be global, domestic, or local. They can also be short-term or long-term. Determine the length and the location you’d like to serve.

Global Missions

Excellent global youth mission trip ideas include the following: Teach children, build homes, renovate homes, childcare assistance, and aid in the area of healthcare. Within each concept of mission work, many things are involved. For instance, if you pursue teaching orphans, then you’d most likely be participating as an assistant to the educator or perhaps teaching a skill. If the mission trip includes childcare assistance at an orphanage, you could host fun events and activities for the children that include sports and recreational activities.

Another excellent mission trip idea is perhaps to build homes in places such as Guatemala or Mexico. Choosing to go Global for a youth mission trip will broaden the perspectives and the minds of adolescents. The great thing about participating in some form of construction in another country is that no skills are required; instead, skills are learned. The overall learning experience and bonds that are formed through the process leave a permanent mark in the hearts of the young men and women who leaped into such an experience.

Oversees there is a massive issue in the case of clean water, so you could choose a project that would assist in providing clean water to those communities. Choosing to go global on a youth mission trip is to step out of one’s comfort zone so the youth must prepare to broaden their minds, and maybe even their palates for different foreign cuisines.

Domestic Missions

To go domestic is an excellent option if the youth group you are leading is new to missions and would prefer to serve where things may feel familiar at some level. For instance, if your youth mission group resides in Florida, maybe choosing to go to another state such as South Dakota, North Carolina, Tennessee, or Washington is not daunting.

In this case, great ideas would be to serve by maintaining, repairing, and painting local churches, neighborhood centers, and prepare for any community work that is needed. Within this scope of work, there is also gardening, working at a nursery, and building a community park. All of these are also great ideas to pursue in your local community.

Community Missions

There are so many areas within our cities and communities that need assistance. If the youth missions group that you lead is more willing and able to help locally, you can do so by helping within homeless shelters by volunteering to cook and serve food. Your youth missions group would also benefit from volunteering in local marathon events for specific causes such as human trafficking, the fight against cancer, and the walk for autism, among others.

Many activities are going on in your community, so do some outside the box thinking with your team to come up with what fits best. Partnering with other local churches can be a great idea. A long term partnership with local churches can offer great ministry experience specific to your location.

Think about the furry friends within the community. A fun way to serve and to organize a local mission is to help and volunteer in an animal organization, wildlife, marine, and veterinary where you can assist with the care of animals. Think further; what about art? Look deep within your communities and search for art projects, murals, and aesthetic needs within the inner cities where you can have your youth serve creatively.

You can also look into organizing a mission to a children’s hospital where the youth can spend time reading, singing songs, or preparing different forms of entertainment for the kids at the hospital.

How To Plan Better Youth Group Trips

T he students in your church have been looking forward to this trip for six months, and you are in charge of planning it and executing it properly. you need to make sure that the group arrives at the destination on time, stays safe, learns some things and generally has a great time. and you must do it all in a way that is cost effective. are you up for the challenge.

Youth group trips come with high expectations and their own logistical challenges. If you’re a youth pastor, you might have a firm grasp on how to lead and inspire your kids, but little experience in coordinating travel logistics. And if you’re an experienced travel planner tasked with putting together a trip for the youth, the needs of these groups are likely to be quite different than what you’re used to.

Here are 10 tips, gathered from veteran youth pastors and travel planners, that will give you a leg up on planning and executing safe, fun and memorable youth-group trips.

1.  Identify your “why.”

Though they may be aimed at the same audience, not all types of youth group trips are created equal. Youth might travel on choir performance trips, retreats, summer camps, mission trips and more, and each of these types of trips comes with its own purpose and objectives. Before you begin planning a trip, make sure you understand why this trip is taking place, what the key parameters are and what the ultimate ministry objectives should be. Then make sure everyone involved — including parents, volunteers and even students — is on board with this purpose.

2.  Set participation rules.

If you have identified your “why,” you should have a clearer understanding of who should and should not come on this trip. You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches by setting participation rules up front. That will probably include the ages of travelers, but it might also have to do with whether students need to be members or regular churchgoers to attend. Trips can be great opportunities to introduce newcomers to the youth group community, but some experienced youth leaders recommend having a “three-time rule” that encourages newcomers to attend three regular youth group meetings before participating in special trips.

3.  Recruit great volunteers.

Student travelers require a lot more supervision and attention than adult travelers do, so having some great volunteers come along will be crucial to the success of the trip. This goes beyond finding “chaperones”; ideal volunteers are adults who enjoy spending time with teenagers, don’t mind getting dirty and make good role models for the impressionable young people with whom they will be spending time. Sometimes these volunteers will be parents, but there might be other people in your congregation who have a lot to offer as well.

4.  Divide and conquer.

Running all the logistics of a trip and then socializing, supervising and teaching at the same time may be too much for even the best group leader. With the right adult volunteers in place, you can delegate responsibilities to adults who can focus on specific areas of logistics, supervision or ministry, leaving you free to do the things you do best. In addition to being responsible for the whereabouts of a handful of kids, each volunteer can head up an area, such as baggage handling, navigation or wake-up calls.

5.  Create a communications plan.

When you take a youth group on the road, the kids aren’t the only people you must keep happy — you also have to think about their parents. Families back home will want periodic updates about what their children are doing during a trip, and they will also want to know that you have a quick and effective way of contacting them in case of emergencies, or vice versa. So before you go, set up a communications protocol that includes texting, phone calls, emails and social media. You might consider creating a specific Facebook group for trip parents or employing a text messaging service that will allow you to send messages to the entire group quickly and easily.

Why Mission Trips?

We really love teenagers and we deeply care about communities.

When done well, mission trips bring together the best of both worlds in ways that communicate Christ’s servant love, prompt growth and ignite passions. That’s work we want to be a part of!

Mission trips connect people with what God is up to all around them, and teenagers are an important part of what God is doing. The trouble is that sometimes they don’t realize it. Misplaced expectations, infinite distractions and disconnected values have turned the love and service that Jesus intended students’ stories to be about into a mere footnote. But mission trips invite students’ faith to their fingertips, allowing meaningful conversations about why service is essential to following Jesus. Mission trips invite students to be fulltime participants in God’s plan.

Communities, too, are participants in that plan. We know that every community – the ones we visit and the ones we come from – have both strengths and struggles. By entering a different town or city, we get an inside view of another context where Jesus is at work. Alongside the real needs we’ve seen students meet, the people and places we serve have also poured back into church groups. This mutual giving makes mission trips much more than simple service projects. It changes perspectives, shapes passions and alters pursuits. It opens students’ eyes to the incredible possibilities God has put in front of them.

Here’s the deal: We think that every teenager should experience a mission trip that values relationships, respects communities and connects the hands of service with the heart of Jesus. Again and again we see quality mission trip experiences show students how to use their lives to love and value others better.

You see, we’ve never thought of mission trips as a youth group’s “big event” where students finally get to live out their faith. The “big event” of students’ faith happens every day as teenagers find the opportunity to love and serve the people God puts in their path. Instead, mission trips are a launch pad… a drawing back of the bow… a wind-up for the pitch. Mission trips equip and encourage students to go home and love the communities they travel into every day when they roll out of bed.

And God’s mission for us is far more than a trip. But we know, for many, living out that mission begins with a trip. That’s why mission trips will continue to be our work and our passion.

Park Ridge church preparing for youth mission to the Bahamas

T ravel to the Bahamas is typically dedicated to tourism and vacation, Park Ridge Community Church Assistant Pastor Mollie Foster knows, but said a church group’s upcoming trip will be focused “on the other side of the island.”

The church is partnering with Praying Pelican Mission, a Minnesota nonprofit, for its weeklong youth mission from June 8 to 14, according to Foster. The church is taking 40 Park Ridge youth between middle and high school ages, as well as 13 chaperones, to oversee the trip. The group will focus on construction, working with kids, learning how to make local cuisine and visiting people who cannot leave their homes.

Foster said she made the decision to go to the Bahamas in collaboration with the youth committee and the church’s senior pastor before the U.S. State Department put out a warning of caution due to crime in certain areas. The church puts together a mission each year and cycles between local, urban, rural and international missions. The last three were in Knott County, Kentucky; Denver, Milwaukee and the Chicago area.

“I am really proud of our kids for saying yes to this opportunity when they have a million other things that they could be doing in their summertime,” said Foster. “Even though they’ll be in the Bahamas, they’ll be sweating and working hard and being in uncomfortable positions and stretched outside their comfort zones.”

Foster said in the past school year, students learned about equity and equality and that the Bahamas has great luxuries available to tourists but also has high levels of poverty for people who live on the island and need to rebuild when natural disasters like hurricanes occur.

Foster said Praying Pelican would take care of the details of where the mission will be and has established ties with communities in the Bahamas.

On Jan. 24, the U.S. Department of State put out a travel advisory for increased caution for Americans visiting the Bahamas. The advisory said there was increased crime on the New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands and there is “gang-on-gang” violence that affects the local population of those islands. The Department of State has four advisory levels, with the Bahamas at level two and more hostile countries, like North Korea and Russia, at level four.

“Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence,” the advisory read.

Foster said the Department of State put out the advisory only after the church made the decision to go to the island and that Praying Pelican would not send the mission to an area that is not safe for them.

Foster said the cost for the 53 people to participate in the mission would be just over $100,000. Each person would pay $1,000 to Praying Pelican for food and lodging, and airfare would cost around $900 a person, according to Foster.

The church is doing a Bahamas-themed fundraiser to help volunteers fund the mission. The church usually does a pumpkin patch fundraiser that brings in $10,000, said Foster, but this time the church is organizing a “ Bahama Bash ” silent auction with reggae music and food scheduled for March 3 at the church, 100 Courtland Ave., Park Ridge.

Donors can sign up online. Foster said the items auctioned off would be donated from local businesses and would include items like gift cards and tickets to local events like beer tastings.

The church has a goal of $27,000 for the fundraiser. Foster said the funds would be split evenly among the 53 participants to reduce the costs they would have to shoulder for the mission.

Zhukovsky: A Spring Trip to an Aviation Town

trips for church youth groups

An aviation museum, a cathedral that looks like a rocket and the Volkonsky Estate — spring is the time to visit the town of Zhukovsky and its surroundings.

Zhukovsky, which is located 40 kilometers southeast of Moscow, is a city of 100,000 that was founded in 1947. The city was named after aero- and hydrodynamics pioneer Nikolai Zhukovsky. Appropriately, it is the home of two major facilities for testing and designing aircraft, the Gromov Flight Research Institute and the Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute.

The Museum of the History of the Conquest of the Sky explains that until World War I in Zhukovsky, there were tests of gliders that were able to lift and transport light BT tanks by air, although this technology did not achieve widespread use. Among the exhibits is the two-meter wooden aircraft propeller that Russian flying ace Pyotr Nesterov crashed into. Nesterov was the founder of aerobatics and the first pilot to fly in a loop. Also in the museum is a 1914 photograph fr om one of the first Russian air shows.

Additionally, the museum includes a flight simulator for children to try feeling like a pilot for 40 rubles ($1.40) an hour. Visitors can play with driving the low-flying attack aircraft, the Ilyushin Il-2, or sit in the pilot’s ejector seat of a fighter jet.

On display is an interesting collection of uniforms, fr om leather suits and cloaks of the 1930s, to the Baklan spacesuit, which is worn on flights into the stratosphere. Museum staff is especially proud that Vladimir Putin appeared in the news in the very suit that is on show. A model of a wind tunnel, when activated, sends a toy airplane into an air spin, and at the height of a five-story building, we see it travel toward the museum to the right of the road.

Not far from Zhukovsky is the village of Ostrov, the ancient tsarist estate. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich loved to hunt here, and in the 18th century, Catherine II granted the village to the Count Alexei Orlov, murderer of Tsar Peter III.

From the entrance to the village, the dome of the Church of the Transfiguration, built in the 16th century, is visible. Its silhouette resembles a rocket soaring into the sky. This resemblance arises not only from the fact that the church itself is rather high, at 35 meters, but also because it stands on the hill. Thanks to many corbel arches, called kokoshniks, that are distinct to Russian architecture, the cupola design somewhat resembles flames. Restoration is underway in the church, and the doors were wide open. The size of the church is impressive on the inside, wh ere the cone-shaped arch seems to be aspiring to infinity.

If you stand on the observation deck nearby, you understand why the place is called Ostrov, or Island. The hill wh ere the church stands seems to hover over the bend of the Moscow River, and the water appears to surround it on all sides.

Not far away is Sukhanovo, a hamlet that was once part of the estate of the same name that was owned by the prominent Volkonsky family. Two wings of the estate are now the House of the Union of Architects, and the other buildings are occupied by the Perspek-

tiva Lyceum.

The manor once belonged to Prince Pyotr Volkonsky, a hero of the War of 1812. The prince was reputed to be a stingy man, but he did not skimp on money for his suburban estate, and most of the Sukhanovo buildings were erected on his order. The mausoleum of the Volkonsky family is located in the center of the complex. It is a massive rotunda with a six-column portico. In Soviet times, the mausoleum was redone as a dining room, and to seat everyone, a gallery was built on two sides of the rotunda.

To the right of the mausoleum is a replica of the famous statue in Tsarskoye Selo of a girl with a broken jug. Under the statue used to be a spring, allowing water to flow out of the jug.

YWAM established its presence in Arusha in 2000 and has since established three fully staffed offices in the region. The center’s education programs include classes in discipleship ministry, tailoring, computer skills and English language, among others.

“In these days, tears are being poured out across the world by individuals, families and YWAMers worldwide. I am personally reeling from the weight of this news, as I knew and loved many of these individuals personally,” said Darlene Cunningham in a letter dated Feb. 26. “Not only have husbands and wives, friends and co-workers been lost, but also YWAM ministry leaders.”

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan sent a message of condolence and urged increased vehicle inspection and traffic law enforcement to prevent further loss of lives.

“These accidents take the lives of our loved ones, national workforce and family members. I continue to call upon everyone to follow traffic laws in the use of vehicles,” Suluhu wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I send my condolences to family and friends who lost their loved ones. May the Almighty God rest them in peace! Ameen!”
