Killswitch Engage is an American metalcore band noted for their abrasive, hard-hitting sound. They have also been recognized for taking pop constructs and re-working them into their own nihilistic style.
The band formed in Westfield, Massachusetts, US in 1999 and was birthed out of the dissolution of the two Boston heavy bands, Overcast and Aftershock. The idea of Killswitch Engage was sparked by a jam session shared between Overcast bassist Mike D’Antonio and Aftershock guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. The second guitarist of Aftershock Joel Stroetzel was later invited to join the group. Stroetzel a guitarist noted for his technical and inventive style was a former student of Berklee College of Music and is influenced by the likes of virtuosic metal guitarists such as Zakk Wylde. The lineup of Killswitch Engage was eventually completed with the addition of former Nothing Stays Gold vocalist Jesse Leach. The band called themselves Killswitch Engage after an X-file episode written by influential cyberpunk author William Gibson.
Killswitch Engage landed their first gig opening up for the likeminded metal band In Flames. At this show they promoted their first release, a four track demo tape including the song “Soilborn”.The band released their debut album one year later on 4 July 2000 through l Ferret Music. Though this album was not a commercial smash it heated interest in the band and garnered the attention of Roadrunner Records. The group would later enter in a contract with the label.
The group’s next album “Alive or Just Breathing” gained the band a good bit of exposure and placed them at No. 37 on the Top Heatseekers chart. In the early 2000s the band experienced a hefty amount of fluctuation with their lineup. Pete Cortese from Overcast joined Killswitch Engage as their second guitarist, but left less than a year later. Still determined to be a band that featured two guitarist Dutkiewicz moved from drums to take up the position of second guitar. Aftershock drummer Tom Gomes was accepted into the band to fill the opening.
Perhaps the biggest change up for the band was vocalist Leach’s abrupt departure. Leach quit the band 3 days before the band was to play a show. After auditioning several vocalists (one being Philip Labonte of All That Remains) they decided on ex-Blood Has Been Shed vocalist Howard Jones. Justin Foley of Blood Has Been Shed also joined the Killswitch Engage lineup replacing drummer Gomes.
With this line up the band perhaps experienced the greatest success of their career. The group played MTV2 Headbangers Ball in 2003 and in 2004 released their third album “The End of Heartache” which climbed all the way to 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. Not only was this album a commercial hit it was also herald by the critics and was nominated for Best Metal Performance for the 47th Grammy Awards. The group continued their stride touring a few high profile festivals and releasing yet another commercially successful album “As Daylight Dies”. This album went to No. 32 on the Billboard 200.
The band released one more album with lead singer Jones, which would be the band’s second self-titled release. The band started a search for a new lead singer and recruited the groups initial frontman Jesse Leach. With the induction of Leach, the band went on to put out their sixth studio album, “Disarm the Descent”. The album did exceptionally well on the charts and with critics. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Chart and the Top Rock Albums Chart. Its leading single “In Due Time” was nominated at the 2014 Grammy Awards for “Best Metal Performance”.

I suppose, if you’re a genuine subscriber to the notion that all screaming metal vocalists sound the same, that it should at least mean you can swap your old singer for a new one and yet still be able to continue relatively seamlessly. That’s precisely what happened to Killswitch Engage, back in early 2012; when their frontman of nine years, Howard Jones, left the band for reasons that are still to be disclosed, they were simply able to bring their original vocalist, Jesse Leach, back into the fold; he’d left the band back in 2002, after bouts of depression and problems with his voice - exacerbated by the uncontrollable nature of his screaming - had left him struggling to keep up with the relentless pace of touring. Not too much has changed since Leach’s return, really, with Killswitch continuing to include a slew of Jones’ material in their sets; with some of their biggest hits featuring him, including ‘My Curse’ and a cover of Dio’s ‘Holy Diver’, they didn’t really have much choice. Like Jones, Leach is an energetic performer, an intimidating physical presence and an incendiary screamer, although there’s no question that he lacks that deep, operatic quality that helped Jones bring a touch of real drama to proceedings. Earlier this year, Killswitch completed a rapturously received co-headline tour of the UK with Trivium; knowing their prodigious work rate, though, they’ll likely be back before long.

Often cited as some of the founders of metalcore, the electrifyingly heavy Killswitch Engage have been rock festival headliner staples since their formation in the late 90s. The Gold-record selling band originally evolved from the breakups of metal bands Overcast and Aftershock, with Overcast's former bassist Mike D'Antonio teaming up with Aftershock's guitarists Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel.
After a number of line-up changes, Killswitch Engage are still going strong after well over a decade, and the band recently released their sixth studio album, 'Disarm The Descent', to the delight of metal hardcore kids (and adults) the world over. This was, naturally, followed by a string of tour dates, and when I saw KSE in 2013 opening for Lamb Of God at the Fillmore Silver Spring, it was clear to me that they have lost none of their powerful, blastbeat-driven sound and originality.
In their live set, the brutally heavy sound of their guitar riffs and drums paired with pitch-perfect vocal screams and unexpectedly tender lyrics were found in classic songs like 'This Is Absolution', 'The Hell in Me', and the epic finale, 'My Curse'. The band's light show was also pretty incredible, combining a creative onstage presence with strobes and blinders to punish the moshpit-enthralled audience. If you want to experience a sweaty, fist-in-air heavy metal show at its best, go see KSE- you'll be in for a treat.
Now you may consider it bold to enter a stage to the theme tune from Rocky, however 'Eye Of The Tiger' seems pretty appropriate for American metal core outfit Killswitch Engage as they are well and truly in the zone when they perform live. They have been touring for over fifteen years now and have a surpassable ability with their instruments, every single member is of equal talent and they just sound so fantastic in a live setting.
Vocalist Adam Dutkiewicz also has a pretty individual vocal which is able to cut through the noise, cheers and instrumentals of the huge venue. He commands attention and with the more passion he throws into his performance, the louder the baiting crowds grow. They mosh throughout and the pits grow larger in size with the vicious riffs of 'Fixation on the Darkness' before they climax for 'In Due Time'. The group is clearly impressed with the energy of their crowd and thank them for being particularly rambunctious tonight. A final screeching rendition of 'My Curse' closes an expectedly mad show.
I was excited and hesitant to finally see KSE. Fortunate to see them in a small venue... packed stage to doors, but alas without Howard Jones. I don't go back to their beginnings; jumped on board with The End Of Heartache, HJ was the glue if you will. Well give it to Jesse Leash. He is dynamic, aggressive... an integral part of the current force called KSE! This band is tight, solid and professional. A show not to be missed if this genre is of your liking. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of their performance, and the crowd must have too as the place was jumping. Looking forward to their new release....
The both acts before KSE were Tenside and Prevocation and they were really good and then came Killswitch Engage! Wow what a blast! They stepped on stage and started playing as their lives belong to this show. They have shown the crowd their energy and feelings about every single song they've played. We had a good mix on their set list of old and new stuff and as already said it was absolutely amazing! Less talking, more songs to hear. First time for me that I've seen them live (I mean I seen them 2008 at the wacken open air but I was drunk as hell) and I am 100% sure that it was not the last time!
Killswitch Engage played with Rise Against this show. Rise Against was the headliner though. With all due respect, Rise Against is a talent band with a great sound... but after that Killswitch mosh pit.. R.A.'s set just bored the f*** out of me! Killswitch should've been headlining this show! They are so much more badass and better sounding! I get it though.. Rise Against is more radio friendly so they probably have a bigger following. Much love and respect to both bands. For Killswitch specifically: COME BACK TO SAN DIEGO SOLO NEXT TIME AND TEAR THIS MOTHERF****R UP!
I was initially hesitant to see Killswitch when I found out Howard had left (best thing for him, though, considering his health). How wrong was I?!! Bringing back their original singer, Jesse Leach, was the best move they could've made. He's so passionate about the music, jumping up to make his fist pumps more aggressive, you can't help but rock out. I'll see them again every chance I get and buy all of their cd's! If you haven't seen them yet, YOU NEED TO GO!! No lie!
The show was freaking awesome! It was completely insane, there was nothing be just pushing and shoveing and just being drenched in other people's sweat and non stop crowd surfing. I expected nothing less from a concert like this. I do not recommend this concert for frail and fragile people as they can get seriously injured but all in all the crowd was nuts. Killswitch was⚡⚡⚡⚡
Didn't see Toothgrinder. I had never heard of 36 Crazyfists but I really liked them. I downloaded their newest album after their set. Highly recommended. Memphis May Fire was a snooze. Killswitch always does a good show. There were some technical difficulties and the singer was deathly ill. He probably should have been in bed but he banged out an impressive set.
It was amazing. I work at the house of Blues and when we found out the show got cancelled we immediately search for another venue and warehouse live was like "YES!" only 500 showed up vs. 1700 we had ticket sales for but, the show was so much more intimate and they even played extra songs for us off their first album. I left satisfied, happy, and in pain lol

The post Killswitch Engage Announce 2022 Tour with August Burns Red and Light the Torch appeared first on Consequence .
Killswitch Engage have announced a North American headlining tour with August Burns Red and Light the Torch . The 2022 tour includes rescheduled dates for shows that were missed in 2020 due to the pandemic, as well as several new cities.
This trek is of extra significance to longtime Killswitch Engage fans, as it features former Killswitch vocalist Howard Jones with his current band, the aforementioned Light the Torch. The original 2020 tour was halted shortly into the run, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tour will kick off January 28th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and run through a March 12th date in Philadelphia. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster , with pre-sales having already begun.
“The wait is finally over,” Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach said in a statement. “We worked very hard to carefully piece this tour back together properly. After the tour was shut down two days in when it started in 2020, we are bringing it back! We are honored and stoked to have August Burns Red and Howard Jones and the boys in Light the Torch along to make this an ‘all killer, no filler’ lineup.”

Killswitch Engage announce rescheduled headline tour for Winter 2022
- November 9th, 2021 –
August Burns Red + Light the Torch to rejoin as support
Gold-selling and three-time Grammy-nominated hard rock heavyweights Killswitch Engage have announced their rescheduled headline tour for Winter 2022.
KsE , recognized by Forbes as “ one of modern metal’s most cherished acts, ” will bring The Atonement Tour back on the road to clubs and theaters across the U.S. and into Canada. The trek kicks off on January 28 in Pittsburgh and runs through March 12 in Philadelphia.
All dates are below. Tickets are onsale here: killswitchengage.com
The Atonement Tour makes its return with the same powerful lineup, which includes Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s August Burns Red as main support and Light the Torch as the opening act. As fans are more than well aware, LTT frontman Howard Jones served as KsE’s singer from 2002 through 2012.
This tour package was originally planned for Spring 2020 but was ultimately postponed two dates into the original run due to the global shutdown that was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will now include all of the rescheduled dates as well as several new locations across the U.S.
“ The long wait is finally over ,” says KsE singer Jesse Leach. “ We worked very hard to carefully piece this tour back together properly. After the tour was shut down two days in when it started in 2020, we are bringing it back! We are honored and stoked to have August Burns Red and Howard Jones and the boys in Light the Torch along to make this an ‘all killer, no filler’ line up. “
Jones echoes the sentiment, saying, “ FINALLY! We get to pick up where we left off on the Atonement tour with KsE and ABR! We couldn’t be more excited to resume with the same lineup, and additional dates have been added so don’t miss this noisy party. Now, stop reading this and get your tickets. GO! Killswitch Engage Announce Tour Dates
Killswitch Engage—singer Jesse Leach, guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D'Antonio, guitarist Joel Stroetzel and drummer Justin Foley—have announced their first headline tour in support of their just-released new album Disarm the Descent , which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard Top 200 and at number 1 on the Hard Music Chart.
The tour will feature support from As I Lay Dying and Miss May I, with Affiance opening. Tickets go on sale on April 12 or April 13, depending on the market.
"Everyone in the Killswitch family is excited to get out on our first U.S. headlining tour in support of our new record," Leach said. "We are hitting some great cities and have a great mix of songs from every era of Killswitch as well as of course a handful of new ones."
Leach continued, "We look forward to sharing this tour with our old friends and brothers in metal As I Lay Dying. I personally have never had the chance to tour with them and I am looking forward to having such a quality band out with us to give this tour even more fire! We will also be joined by a talented and up-and-coming band Miss May I. Thanks to all the U.S. fans for your support! Our live show will be full-on energy with all of us ready to take this to a whole new level."
Bassist Mike D. concurred, saying, "We are super excited to be back out with our good buds in As I Lay Dying! They are some of our favorite dudes to hang with on the road, so assumptions are high that utter chaos shall ensue. There will be so much metal riffage -- you could build your own Carnival Cruse Ship. That's right, 'CHUGGA CHUGGA Paralysis' is surely imminent."

Lamb of God Announce ‘Omens’ Album + Tour With Killswitch Engage
When your previous trek is literally dubbed "Metal Tour of the Year," the bar is set hight for your future touring. But Lamb of God have put together one of the top metal packages for 2022, pairing up with Killswitch Engage and inviting Baroness , Suicide Silence , Motionless in White , Spiritbox , Animals as Leaders and Fit for an Autopsy to round out the bill on select dates. The tour news comes as Lamb of God are also set to reveal the details of their latest album, which now carries the title Omens .
Fans will have to wait just a very short period for new music as the band's first single from Omens , a track called "Nevermore," arrives this Friday (June 10). As for the album itself, Omens is on track for an Oct. 7 street date via Epic Records and finds the group once again working with producer Josh Wilbur.
As for what fans can expect from the set, singer Randy Blythe minces no words. "The world is crazy and keeps changing. Omens is a reaction to the state of the world. It’s a very pissed-off record.” He then pauses for emphasis, reiterating, “It is extremely pissed-off.”
Guitarist Mark Morton adds, "The inner workings of the band have never been better. You can hear it in Omens . You can see it in our performances, and if you're around us for five minutes, you can feel it."
Pre-orders for the album are currently available here with a number of merch bundle and vinyl color variant options. All physical CD and vinyl releases will include a free access code to watch the livestream viewing of The Making of Omens documentary, which will premiere the week of the album's release. So pre-order your album here now.
And with a new album en route, it's time to build the anticipation by hitting the road. As previously mentioned, the band should have one of the top tours of the fall. Killswitch Engage will join them for the entire run, which kicks off Sept. 9 in Brooklyn at Coney Island. The support for run is also top notch with Baroness, Motionless in White, Spiritbox and Animals as Leaders taking turns in the primary support slot, while Suicide Silence and Fit for an Autopsy will split the opening duties on the run.
"Two decades ago, Lamb of God, along with Killswitch Engage, were a part of a new wave of American heavy metal music," says Morton. "Our scene grew from a small, loosely connected network of underground shows in basements and warehouses, into a global phenomenon that helped define an entire generation of modern heavy metal. We are thrilled to announce The Omens Tour, which celebrates not only the perseverance and impact of that original movement, but also the creativity and originality of the bands that it influenced. Heavy metal is alive and well. The Omens Tour proudly showcases the depth and diversity of our scene. This is not a tour to miss."
Tickets will go on sale this Friday (June 10) at 10AM local time via Lamb of God's website . In addition, Citi will by the official card of the tour, with a Citi cardmember pre-sale starting this Tuesday (June 7) at 10AM ET running through Thursday (June 9) at 10PM local time. Get details on that here . All dates can be viewed at the bottom of this post.

Will KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Embark On Special Tour In 2024 To Celebrate 20th Anniversary Of 'The End Of Heartache'?
In a new interview with Heavy New York , KILLSWITCH ENGAGE bassist Mike D'Antonio was asked about the possibility of him and his bandmates embarking on a special tour next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough third album, 2004's "The End Of Heartache" . He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "It really hasn't been brought up. It'll probably be brought up now. The unfortunate and weird thing is you've just gotta take into account that that's not [current KILLSWITCH ENGAGE singer] Jesse 's [ Leach ] record. He likes that record a lot, but it's not him singing on it. So do we wanna force him into a situation where he's doing stuff that maybe he's a little less than excited about or just not as invested in. We play a lot of the hits from different records that [former KILLSWITCH ENGAGE singer] Howard [ Jones ] did, but we want Jesse to be happy too. So that would be a discussion to see how we could go about doing something like that."
Back in 2019, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist and producer Adam Dutkiewicz told Kerrang! magazine that he wasn't interested in doing anything to celebrate the 15th anniversary of "The End Of Heartache" . "It's kind of just a flash in the band, and then we move on for the next thing," Adam said. "We're in the middle of trying to set up the new record. It's funny, our bassist, Mike , was, like, 'Hey, should we be thinking about doing a 15th-anniversary tour for this record?' and I was, like, 'No. We should be thinking about this new record.' We shouldn't live in the past, y'know? I feel like there's been too much of that recently. Maybe more people should focus on writing more material, and not just trying to rehash stuff, y'know? There's just too much of that.
"I'm happy that everyone agreed with me that it wasn't a good idea," he continued, "especially because we literally just finished our new record. So we have things to worry about."
"The End Of Heartache" was the band's first release to feature Jones and drummer Justin Foley .
The disc's title track was nominated in the "Best Metal Performance" category at the 47th annual Grammy Awards .
The album was certified gold by the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association Of America ) in December 2007 for sales in excess of a half million copies in the United States.
Leach appeared on KILLSWITCH 's self-titled debut and sophomore album, "Alive Or Just Breathing" , before exiting the band. Jones took over on vocals for "The End Of Heartache" , "As Daylight Dies" and the 2009 self-titled set before being dismissed from the group 11 years ago.
On June 9, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE was joined by ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna and Jones during KILLSWITCH 's concert at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Hampton, New Hampshire. Belladonna came up on stage to perform a cover of DIO 's "Holy Diver" , while Jones shared lead vocals with Leach on the song "The Signal Fire" , which originally appeared on KILLSWITCH ENGAGE 's latest album, 2019's "Atonement" .
When the music video for the studio version of "The Signal Fire" was first released in August 2019, Leach said that he wrote the song's lyrics "with Howard in mind and our connection through our similar mental illnesses." He explained: "I mean, now that I've hung with this guy a few times, it's 'crazy' (pun intended) how similar we are. We are brothers in metal, anxiety, hardcore music, love of medicinal marijuana and fighting depression.
"We may be very different-sounding voices, but, in truth, we are similar in many ways in our minds," he added.
Jesse went on to say that the song's lyrics are "about keeping hope in dark times and helping out those in need."
Leach , who has previously blamed his exit from KILLSWITCH in 2002 on his battle with depression, said that he planned "on using this song to help continue to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. Both Howard and I have a very strong outspoken stance on the subject and I will use this to help with the cause," he said.

“It is by far the most difficult album I’ve ever worked on”: Killswitch Engage’s Jesse Leach gives update on long-awaited ninth record
Killswitch Engage’s vocalist has reflected on making the band’s first album in five years, saying he sees “the distant light at the end of this long tunnel”
Killswitch Engage singer Jesse Leach has spoken about the status and emotional toll of the band’s upcoming ninth album in a new Instagram post.
The vocalist, 45, wrote on social media today (January 16) that the metalcore leaders’ first release since 2019’s Atonement “is by far the most difficult album I’ve ever worked on for various reasons”.
He also stated that he “see[s] the distant light at the end of this long tunnel”.
Leach added that he’s taken a new approach to the album’s lyrics, that he’s “crafted some songs to feel more like a story, which I believe makes the material more interesting”. He also describes the lyrics as, as always, “deeply personal and for the most part difficult to write”.
Leach’s post, which also features video of woodland in western Massachusetts, reads in full: “I will say this.
“The newest @killswitchengage album we are working on has taken its toll on me this past year. It is by far the most difficult album I’ve ever worked on for various reasons.
“That being said as I see the distant light at the end of this long tunnel. I can truly say it has all been a much needed growing experience.

“When I say that I mean it personally, lyrically and vocally.
“I’ve been able to take any criticism from my dudes and separate it from my being to push through and rise to the occasion.
“This has been a work in progress as everything I write is always deeply personal and for the most part difficult to write. It’s always hard to let go of my work. I’m very pleased I’ve learned to separate my emotions from the work. It’s been liberating!
“I’ve also been able to stretch the limits of my voice mixing techniques and hues of sound (still working on this as a full time student of the voice via @zenofscreaming).
“Lastly, lyrically I’ve crafted some songs to feel more like a story, which I believe makes the material more interesting.
“Adam [Dutkiewicz, guitars] has helped a great deal as usual being a great producer and a good friend throughout. He’s talked me off the cliff and made me laugh when I need it.
“It can’t be overstated how crucial he is (even when I can get thrown sideways at times). He always sees the bigger picture and pushes me to my limit for better or worse. The outcome however is always far better than I imagined.
“That’s enough out of me for now. I’m also learning to keep work and posting about it to a minimum. As they say less is more so I’ll say less.
“To wrap this post up on my days off I am completely silent and I go out alone to explore and move as it is a great contrast to hollering in the closed up studio.
“This is footage from my last day off I drove an hour west deep in western Massachusetts (a truly beautiful area, and no I don’t and never have lived in MA). I then drove my 4x4 truck down into a valley to hike a trail I knew no humans would be on.
“It was quiet save the over flowing river. I didn’t see a single human all day. Here’s some footage. Thanks to everyone for the support over the years! All hails! 🤘🏼”
Dutkiewicz spoke to Kerrang! in August about the impending Killswitch album, stating that he believes it will be released in 2024.
“Jesse Leach has been working out some lyric ideas and demos for the last few days, actually,” the guitarist said. “We’ve got a lot of songs kind of rolling around right now. I'm thinking about getting back into the studio after this tour and getting to work, and I'm hoping we'd like to have the record done by the end of the year. But it might take a bit longer than that, so I would assume new music next year, for sure.”
Killswitch have already announced several shows for 2024, including a run of South American festival dates in April and a tour supporting Iron Maiden in Australia in September. Dates are below and tickets are now available .
