Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Pulling Trouble Codes

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:

  • P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
  • P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
  • P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
  • P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

How to pull trouble codes from the dodge journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

dodge journey 2009 engine light

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free .

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed.

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored.

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Why is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your Journey and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light .

gas caps

A check engine light can indicate a broad spectrum of problems with your 2009 Dodge Journey. If you have a flashing check engine light, turn off the engine immediately to prevent potential motor damage. Whereas a steady check engine light may mean you merely need to tighten you gas cap next time you stop in order to reset the service engine soon light. The video above shows how to locate the on board diagnostics OBD plug location on your 2009 Journey, how to read the trouble codes and how to reset or clear the check engine light using a scanner on your Journey.

Is it OK to drive with a check engine light on? Intermittent Check Engine Light: If the check engine light on your 2009 Journey is not steady, try to take note of the conditions when this happens. For example, does it happen when you accelerating, driving on the highway or does it appear at low speeds? This will help your mechanic evaluate the issue. Steady Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is on every time you operate your Journey, you need to have it checked as soon as possible, especially if you notice performance problems or unusual noises. Flashing Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is flashing, stop driving your Journey and have it towed to your nearest mechanic – a blinking check engine light means you probably have a very serious problem with your car and you risk ruining your engine by driving it. If you are unsure about what your diagnostic trouble codes mean after finding the Journey OBD port location and scanning the codes; have your Journey diagnosed by a professional automotive technician.

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

In a few words: It’s a warning light that alerts the driver about any type of engine problems . In some vehicles, the light comes in two colors: yellow to indicate minor problems and red to indicate serious problems.

The check engine light is part of every vehicle that has an electronic engine management system, either an integral one or only for fuel ignition. Its function is to alert the driver about any type of engine problems .

While driving, the computer of your Journey (ECU o PCM) monitors air/fuel supply and exhaust gases in order to verify that the engine is working properly. If any problem is detected, the check engine Light of your dashboard will turn on.

Depending on the type of failure, the light may either blink or remain constantly lit. If the problem is serious, your Journey will be in a “emergency” state that will prevent you from accelerating the engine above certain speed limit, forcing you to drive at low speed in order to avoid further damages.

The check engine light can alert you about some failures but not all of them. It will depend on how complex the electronic control unit of your Journey is.

To properly diagnose the failure of your Journey, it is important to have a suitable scanner that is compatible with the brand and model of your car. The scanner will show the engine fault code that the computer has detected, which is related to a certain problem that is affecting the engine.

The most common check engine light causes of your Journey and how to detect them.

  • Ignition cylinder problems: irregular engine running.
  • Problem with exhaust gas oxygen sensor (Lambda probe): irregular engine running, there are misfires when accelerating abruptly or driving at low revs. It may be caused by a sensor fault or a failure of the catalytic converter.
  • Problems with the engine intake (air or fuel): engine running may be rough or irregular.
  • Problems with the electrical system: sometimes it is easy to identify the cause but other times it may take days of testing to find the source of the problem.
  • Sensor malfunction: It affects engine running or stops running completely.
  • Wiring problems: contact failure, cut wires, short circuits.

Indicator status and severity

The check engine light can behave in different ways. Here we show you the most common light signals so you can know what is happening to your Journey:

  • The light turns on when you switch on the ignition key and then it turns off : It’s normal. It’s used to verify that the light itself is working and the bulb is not burned out.
  • The light blinks and then it turns off (cyclically) : This indicates that the car had a problem at one point but it is not happening at the moment.
  • The light is steady: This indicates that there is a problem but is not so serious as to stop driving your vehicle.
  • The light blinks continuously: This indicates that there is a critical problem. Usually, you should stop driving your vehicle.

Keep in mind that if you have a top-quality scanner, you will be able to verify all the car sensors , avoiding blind maintenance which is a pointless waste of money. Another recommendation is to check the owner's manual , if you want to know more about the fault codes that the scanner will detect.

Bought this car in April 2010. Not even 30 days later check engine light comes on!! I call the dealer where I bought it never got an answer never got a call back!!! Finally I did get in toouch with someone from where I bought it and they said the check engine light may have needed to be reset, check the fuel cap, and dont pump the gas while the car was running because that could cause the engine light to come on! I would have just taken it back if I didntI live 4 hours away from where I bought it! Got all of the above checked out, check engine light still on! And to add to that the no fuse light came on!! This car is becoming very annoying!!!

Check Engine Light (Loose Gas Cap ERROR!)

RamAddiction

  • Add to quote

Okay so I have been getting a check engine light lately and its been a evap error, so I took it over to Hemi GTX's house and he told me that he would get the same thing and the problem is that the gas cap tends to leak if not tightened properly. Well we removed the errors thank god to SC, but sure lo and behold it comes right back, anyone else get these errors?

RB24

i did on my 02 but not the 07. ended up replacing the gas cap from the dealer and didnt get one after. they said it could be the seal is just worn and allows just enough air in to cause the cel

im not particularly indepth with these trucks but there should be an evap cannister somewhere under the box of the truck of near the rear of the cab on the underside, should have a bunch of emissions hoses comming from it and be about the size of a shoe box. im betting its clogged or dirty. try disconnecting the lines and blow some compressed air through the line and have a buddy feel on the other end of there is pressure going through it try a new gas cap first though, its cheap and easy to install, a evap code will be triggered if the gas cap in secure

Maxtcc

I did for a while when I was topping up the tank , stopped when I ran it dry and then stopped toppin it up.

myoung84

I have been getting a CEL for about a month now. I need to replace the gas cap. You can see the seal has dry rotted.

quietpeen

that is weird because last week I put gas in my truck and I forgot to put the gas cap back on :thatfunny Well anyway I drove around for a little while before I noticed that I didn't put it back on. Never got any kind of code.

that damn thing kept coming back on mine but i kept clearing it. Waited in line for 2 hours to pass inspections one day, when it came my turn, i failed because that piece of shit oem gas cap seal was bad and had to go back for inspection again. I went to autozone right there and bought a new one and havent seen the light since.

Error Codes are P0456 AND P0457.

p0456 was the one i kept gettin

same code, a damn squirrel made a lunch out of a 1/4 inch rubber vapor hose located along side the filler neck on the gas tank. $8.00 part and $130 for dodge to find it

$15 Mopar Gas cap frm Dealer, and used the Superchips to clear the codes. Problem Fixed: No more errors and/or check engine light.

This morning my check engine light came on. I shut everything down, checked under the hood, everything looked fine. Started it back up, no weird noises, no smoke, no roughness or change in performance/response. Dealership isn't open today to check anyway, so I'm driving 'til Monday regardless. Came on every time as I did shopping today and whatnot. This afternoon, it went out.

I had something like this happen once on my 03 Sebring (something weird like left exhaust was lean), and there was a sequence to get the OBD codes off the odometer. Anybody know if there's a way to get them on the Journey? Or is this a take it to the shop situation? I'd like to be able to find the error code and at least have an idea what happened. I'll probably take it in next week anyway, just in case it is something that could turn into a warranty claim down the road ... but it would ease my mind for the rest of the weekend to know what it was.

I kind of expected a check engine light to come with some kind of message in the EVIC ... but apparently not. Seems to me the logical place for it, no?

if a code registered it would be under messages on the evic. you could take it to a auto parts store like auto zone or advance auto they could check it with their meter they use to do it for free.

It lit up again this afternoon - still 0 messages in the EVIC. Going to take it to the dealership tomorrow to get it checked. Wouldn't be the gas cap, unless they magically come loose on their own. I last filled up last Monday - so 5 days to register it loose seems odd. And I always give it at least 5 clicks when I put it back on.

Chris, My starter would make a funny noise when starting every once in a while and light would come on for a couple days. Dealer said it didn't leave a code. Had RRT 11-069 applied for long crank time. Hasn't happened since. Hope it isn't something too serious.

Well, I'll find out soon enough. Whatever it is, it's all under warranty. I've always said with new vehicles it's best to get all the breakage and problems done early ... so you don't suffer from "6 days after the warranty is up" syndrome like our big, expensive printer/copier/fax/scanner at work! LOL (Seriously, last week, SIX days past the day it was activated, the SECOND one of these things developed problems. Gooooooooo Xerox! Not.)

If the light does not come on when first put in the run position then it needs to be checked. Of course a few seconds after starting the light should go out. See below for the owners manual explanation.

The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of

an onboard diagnostic system, called OBD, that

monitors engine and automatic transmission control

systems. The light will illuminate when the key is in

the ON/RUN position, before engine start. If the bulb

does not come on when turning the key from OFF to

ON/RUN, have the condition checked promptly.

Certain conditions, such as a loose or missing gas cap,

poor fuel quality, etc., may illuminate the MIL after

engine start. The vehicle should be serviced if the light

stays on through several of your typical driving cycles. In

most situations, the vehicle will drive normally and will

not require towing.

Mine came on last week. Autozone checked it out and it turned out to be the knock sensor. It's either a faulty sensor or the wireing. I don't here a knock in the engine. Does anyone know where to find this thing and how to replace it. The part is 78 dollors at a/z and like 118 at the dealer,(plus labor that is 400 dollors or more). Not getting any help from Dodge or Autozone, and there are no books or manuals out for the Journey yet. I am haveing trouble finding info on the web as well.

DodgeCACares

DodgeCACares

Not knowing the age or KMS of your Journey, my only suggestion is to get it in to the dealer just to be sure that is the right repair and go from there.

It’s not too often I hear of a Knock Sensor issue but if it really is that, you need to keep in mind that you have to pull the upper intake manifold to get to the sensor which a lot bigger of a job than you'd expect.

Something is SERIOUSLY wrong. It's off. Lol.

Yes, it's normal. In the ON position, the BCM thinks the car is fully on, but sees the engine is off. All cars do that.

Think of the days pre-push button. You would turn the key to start, then it would spring back to ON.
