Calgary Campervan/Motorhome Hire FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a motorhome in calgary.

The cost of RV rentals in Calgary will differ depending on the duration of your trip, the size of vehicle you choose, and which company you decide to go with.

However, when it comes to campervan rentals in Calgary, you’re typically looking to pay between $70-$140 per day for a small camper, and between $150-$250 per day for a large RV/motorhome.

Can you park an RV anywhere in Canada?

The rules around parking large RVs in Canada can be a bit hazy as you’ll find websites that state different things.

However, generally, the only legal place to park up overnight is at a campground. You’ll find thousands of campgrounds throughout Canada though, so you won’t be short of places to sleep!

Can you camp anywhere in Canada?

Canada has a very flexible policy on wild camping, and there are plenty of places you can stay overnight for FREE.

However, this generally applies to smaller campers, not large RVs. You’ll also find that some places aren’t vehicle accessible.

If you want to wild camp and aren’t Canadian, then you’ll also need to buy a permit that’s charged nightly - that means it's not 'free' for international residents, unfortunately.

Do you need a special license to drive an RV in Canada?

Generally, you won’t need a special license to drive an RV in Canada - an international driver’s license will do.

However, if you’re planning to drive an RV that weighs over 26,000 pounds, carries more than 16 passengers, or is a Class A with an airbrake, then extra requirements are needed.

Can you sleep at rest stops in Canada?

Sleeping overnight at rest stops is prohibited. However, you’re allowed to sleep there for a maximum of four hours to rest and take a break in between driving.

You can choose to risk it if you’d like, but you’ll likely be moved on.

So are you ready to explore Canada in a campervan?

Now that you’ve taken a look at the best rental companies in Calgary, it’s time to start your adventure.

Although the province of Alberta is beautiful in itself, Canada is a huge country and is full of incredible places to visit including Toronto , Vancouver , Montreal , and Quebec City .

During your trip you'll also want to explore ‍ Jasper National Park , Banff , Niagara Falls , and Whistler.

Luckily, many of the RV rentals in Calgary allow you to pick-up and drop-off in different locations which means you can plan the ultimate road trip!

Trust me, road-tripping this country will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

On the other hand—and arguably Calgary’s biggest drawcard—there are the spectacular parks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. If you rent an RV in Calgary, you are just a drive away from the magnificent peaks, lakes and wildlife of the Rocky Mountains. Explore parks like Banff and Jasper, which are linked by the glorious Icefields Parkway, or head south to Waterton Lakes National Park (and perhaps across the U.S. border to Glacier National Park). To the east, Dinosaur Provincial Park is home to striking badlands and rich deposits of dinosaur fossils.

Calgary Stampede

Organized every July in Calgary, the Calgary Stampede a multi-day event that involves agricultural exhibits and competitions, First Nations exhibits, concerts, a parade and one of the largest rodeos in the world. It is arguably the biggest tourist attraction in Calgary.

Banff National Park

Located about 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of Calgary, Banff National Park is the oldest national park in Canada and one of the oldest in the world. It encompasses vast tracts of mountainous terrain, as well as glaciers and icefields, lakes and forests.

Banff National Park is the location of Lake Louise , Peyto Lake and Moraine Lake, which are some of the most photographed, stunning and cherished lakes in Canada. The epic 230-kilometres (160-mile) Icefields Parkway links Banff National Park to Jasper National Park.

Moraine Lake

As mentioned above, Moraine Lake is one of several stunning glacial lakes in Banff National Park. Famous for its turquoise water, superb viewpoints and excellent boating, it sits in the beautifully named Valley of the Ten Peaks. You can get there from Lake Louise via the Moraine Lake Road.

A short distance to the northeast of Calgary in the Canadian Badlands , Drumheller is home to the Midland Provincial Park in Drumheller, which is where you can visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. This is phenomenal place to visit for lovers of history and palaeontology.

The museum houses no fewer than thirteen different exhibits, which showcase about 800 fossils (out of a huge collection of 160,000 fossils). Major highlights are the skeletons of various large dinosaurs.

Dinosaur Provincial Park

To the southwest of Calgary and Drumheller lies Dinosaur Provincial Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves awesome badlands scenery and a wealth of dinosaur fossils. Combined with nearby Drumheller, it makes for a fantastic loop drive with a Calgary RV rental.

This is one of the richest dinosaur fossil sites on the planet, where over 55 dinosaur species were discovered, and more than 500 dinosaurs have been excavated. At the Dinosaur Provincial Park Visitor Centre, you can see exhibits, learn about the park’s natural history, visit a fossil prep lab, and more.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site

Blessed with an undeniably intriguing name, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site is a fascinating place to visit on a road trip from Calgary with an RV rental. It is about two hours south of the city, almost directly on the way to Waterton Lakes National Park.

First Nation peoples used the site for 5,500 years to kill plains buffalo by driving them off a cliff. Nowadays, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to an interpretive centre, which has exhibits on the culture, technology, ecology, mythology and lifestyle of the Blackfoot people.

Waterton Lakes National Park

Together with its southern neighbour Glacier National Park in Montana, USA, Waterton Lakes National Park makes up the UNESCO-protected Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

A popular camping destination in southern Alberta, the park features numerous beautiful mountain lakes, rugged peaks and abundant wildlife. It is also home to the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, which sits above the shore of Upper Waterton Lake.

Located in the heart of Alberta, Edmonton is the province’s capital and major regional hub. The city is set on the banks of North Saskatchewan River and has several fascinating historical attractions. Fort Edmonton Park is a visit-worthy living history museum, while the Art Gallery of Alberta exhibits First Nations art. The West Edmonton Mall is one of the world’s biggest shopping malls, and Canada’s most visited.

People who rent an RV in Calgary might be interested in driving the scenic Boomtown Trail from Calgary to Edmonton. This driving route features historic pioneering towns and sites dating from the time when the railroad came through the area.

The small town of Okotoks , just south of Calgary, is rather unassuming, but it does have a major attraction. Its name comes from the Blackfoot word for rock, “ohkotok”, which probably refers to the nearby Big Rock.

Situated roughly 7 kilometres (5 miles) west of Okotoks, this massive boulder lies in a featurelessly flat plain. The Big Rock is the largest glacial erratic (a rock deposited by a glacier that is different from an area’s native rocks) in the so-called Foothills Erratic Terrain.

The busy town of Canmore sits near Banff National Park’s southeastern boundary, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Calgary. It is a popular stopping point for people on Calgary motorhome road trips, both for its vibrant arts and culture scene, and its access to spectacular scenery.

A major attraction is the Cranmore Nordic Centre, featuring the gorgeous Upper and Lower Grassi Lakes, and fantastic trails for hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, cross-country skiers and roller skiers.

No stars deserved. In October, after arriving for a planned RV rental from Calgary to Toronto, they changed the rules on me. I no longer could carry out my plan to cross into the USA for a conference. Despite my best efforts, the operator and staff at the Calgary location could not find a solution. I drove from Vancouver and then had to make alternate arrangements because the insurance was a Permit from Point A to Point B, expired on a specific day, and was not USA approved. Big surprise. Now, Cruise America (for Cruise Canada) is not providing me with compensation, like the $600 gas credit, free 4,000 km & up to 14 nights accommodation. Cruise Canada uses Cruise America for their bookings.

Photo of Chris W.

Cruise Canada and, I suspect Cruise America, are interested only in your money. I imagine most renters that want to experience the north American experience are coming from abroad. Be aware, their contract only covers mechanical failures. Nothing else in the camper is covered. Bark a bit and you may get a small refund. If you fridge, black and grey water, microwave, bedding or, for that matter, anything to do with camping which was the reason you hired in the first place, that's not their concern. If you push, you may get 10% refund. Please don't even try going up the chain. They already have your money. Their customer service is definitely out for lunch, probably on your money.

We rented our first RV for the May long weekend we got a heckuva deal when we called in to book obviously you need a major credit card but they allowed us to use our friends card as long as she was present which I really appreciated, because my debit Visa and our prepaid visa didn't work! Deposit of $500 which is reasonable, 1,000 000 liability insurance with $1,000 deductible. They have a variety of Motorhomes up to 30ft, we chose that one because they sleep 7 and only the large ones have a generator. It was large with microwave, stove shower no oven, Queen in back and 3 double beds. Personal care kit and bedding all come at extra charge we brought our own stuff! So when we picked it up service was fast and friendly, we did a walk around but unfortunately we didn't inspect it properly and it came damaged, but we weren't charged but still please look at everything closely inside and out!! Then they seemed to have to repair something or tighten something in bathroom? But again we didn't ask and they didn't test it before we left to make sure it was fixed!!! Well it apparently wasn't as when we arrived camping using water there was a major leak from back of toilet all over the floor, my husband tried tightening where he could see the leak but nothing. Then a nice worker at the campground came and had a look and used caulking, still no go we couldn't use water so we called 1 800 number provided, and they couldn't help or send anyone, or even trouble shoot???? We were told to go to nearest RV service place 3 hours away, but in middle of camping?? So we tried talking to a owner of campground and he was so awesome he helped us fix it!! If it wasn't for him our trip was ruined! So pleas pleas if you rent from here just make sure to check, I get things break but I'm sure we left with it already broken and they knew!!!!! They gave us a 2 day refund, and I did like the RV and price, but I am sure surprised at what happened! We just might buy our own to save the hassle!

We rented a C25 camper from the Bolton Ontario location in June 2019. My main complaint, and there are a couple, is that the grey water tank leaked, a lot, and they knew it. There was duct tape over the leaking pipe at the joint to the valve. Obviously it needed repairs but they chose to send it out leaking. Also the washroom door swings open as soon as you started driving (over 5,000 km) and became a huge distraction while driving. I tried to seal up the leak with special plumbing sealer tape but only managed to slow it down. I was offered a hundred dollars off my $8,000.00 rental.

Stay away - they cheat! Friends of us made a tour with a 30' RV from this company and we supported them as interpreter during the pickup as well as during the return of the RV. The pick-up went smoothly - they show renters a video before the hand-over which explains in detail how to handle the RV and all it's accessories. After the video they walk you through your RV and make notes of all damages. The first thing nobody tells you is that the odometer shows miles, even if the RV holds an Alberta license plate (Canada is metric). The RV had round about 70.000 miles (roughly 110.000km) and one of the staff commented this as 'you are lucky to have such a new RV'. The rental policy states that you have to pay for the cleaning if you do not return the RV cleaned inside and outside. We asked the guy who made the walk-through what was meant by 'clean' and he confirmed that the inside should be swiped and he confirmed that the outside should not show extensive dirt i.e. from driving through mud or on gravelled roads. At the end of their trip we accompanied our friends again and we met the same guy who handed the RV over to us. The interesting part is that he could not remember what he confirmed about the exterior cleaning. He complained about some 'bugs and dust' and charged for the full exterior cleaning. We asked for the manager and waited 30 minutes in the completely empty rental station as we were told 'the manager was busy'. We then started looking for him and found him in his office. The first thing he told us was that he was not informed that someone was waiting for him. Talking about the case he called for the guy who handed us over the RV and the guy lied that he never told us what 5 people have heard! Our friends walked away paying for the exterior cleaning and with a very bitter 'last day taste' of their first vacation to Canada. This is not the way to make visitors come back!

Not impressed with the Calgary location. We booked the motorhome to be picked up at 1 p.m. It was not ready and they asked us to come back in 1/2 hour. We did, but the unit still was not ready for another 15 minutes. The girl rushed through the functions of the motorhome and did not check everything. As it turned out the hot water heater did not work. My husband went through the manual and followed the instructions. We found out the wire was burnt on the hot water heater. We phoned cruise Canada and they said they would phone back the next morning by 8 to tell us where to get it fixed. They did not phone back until after 3 p.m. and the place to get it fixed would be closed soon. We opted not to get it fixed, since we were leaving the next day. When we returned the motorhome they filled out a form, but not once did they try to compensate us. In fact they miscalculated the kilometers, so we ended up paying more. The sad thing is while we were waiting for our ride other campers were dropping off there units and every person had something not functioning on it.eg: fridges not working, cupboards not latching, etc. I would not recommend this location to anyone, it clearly shows that they are only interested in making a profit and not their customers. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY I am afraid to say that although when we dropped our RV off in Vancouver we found that depot to be proficient, professional and friendly, we did not have the same opinion when we collected it in Calgary. We received an extremely poor first impression of Cruise Canada and, in fact, our experience put a mar on the whole vacation for us, as we were dreading the drop-off in Vancouver. We were told by our tour company in the UK who booked the RV package for us that we should contact Cruise Canada direct 24 hours before we were due to arrive, to arrange time of pick-up from out hotel in Calgary. I started trying to contact them before I left the UK - I must have phoned at lease a dozen times - NO ANSWER and couldn't even leave a message as the Message Box was full. On the advice of our tour company we got a taxi at 9am in the morning to the Calgary Depot. There was nobody at the reception desk and I had to wander around out back to find somebody. I found a group of men standing around chatting who told be to go back to the reception and somebody would turn-up - great customer service. Eventually, a girl showed up and denied that they didn't answer their phones!! Well at least, we were now on the way to getting our RV. The supposed Orientation was a joke - thank goodness we have RV experience back in the UK otherwise I do not know how we would have gotten on - are they deliberately not providing clear instructions in the hope that somebody causes some form of damage so they can deduct from the Security Deposit. I am so disgusted in this Company's customer service that nothing would surprise me!! Now on to the RV - dirty towels and bedding - i wouldn't even put them in my dog basket. We had to go to Walmarts to buy all new. The provisions package supplied is a joke - no glasses, no frying pan, no toaster, no coffee maker. No combi-microwave - just a microwave and 3 burners. Not conducive for a self-catering holiday. In fact, they require the RV to be returned clean, what about supplying IT CLEAN - I had to clean it myself when we collected it, as it was not up to an acceptable cleaning standard. I WILL DO MY UTMOST TO SPREAD THE WORD THAT THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

Wow i wish i had read the reviews before we rented here also. We got a motorhome rental for the spring special (which is NO special in the end). They use unfair, sneaky tactics to 'nickel-and dime' extra expenses out of customers. Once they have your credit card number, watch out! They add on extra booking fees which are not clearly stated when you pick-up your vehicle. Also, the van we got was NOT clean and had a very noisy heater/furnace during the night use. It seemed like the vehicle had not been checked for safety or tuned-up for a Long time! Upon returning the vehicle, It cost FAR more than they initially quoted me when i booked itl Go elsewhere - They are crooked thieves

BEWARE - I rented a 19 ft RV from the Calgary office late Sept 2016. To start with, gas tank was 1/3 full. That was annoying, but minor. What wasn't a minor annoyance was my carbon monoxide detector shrieking me awake at 3AM my first night, 5 hours after starting the gas furnace. I called traveller assistance and reset the detector, then hard reset it by pulling the fuse for 5 minutes, and then settled down for the night. Same thing happened next night (my neighbors were not happy). I called again, options were to 1) buy a new detector and/or 2) buy an electric heater. Of course, I was in Banff over a weekend - no hardware store open. So, I ended up bundling up in my (summer) sleeping bag and waking up from the cold every few hours to run the heater for a few minutes while the fuse for the detector was pulled out (not smart, I know). Possible this was a bad detector, but you can't smell CO, so it seems nutty to ignore it all night long. Probably I was the 1st person to use the furnace this season? You could see a lot of yellow, not blue, flame - so I'm pretty sure that means it wasn't burning properly, and it took hours to alarm - seems like a bad detector would go off right away. Some observations: 1) This shouldn't happen - a defective furnace leaking carbon monoxide can kill you. This should be maintained/checked before I rent the RV. 2) Why have gas heat? The Cruise Canada RV website doesn't tell you this size RV (19ft) HAS NO GENERATOR! So the furnace (fan) can only run 2 hours on the auxiliary battery - so you HAVE to be hooked up to an electrical outlet at a campsite to run heat overnight. Why not just use an electric heater and avoid the propane/CO issue? They did knock a day's rental off for my near death experience and several nights of poor sleep, but I wouldn't repeat this adventure.

DO NOT RENT HERE!!! They are rip off artists......... Rock chipped my rentals windshield, I phoned them to see if I could repair it, they said they will do it for $60. On return they said the whole windshield had to be replaced. Took $350 from my initial deposit. Terrible service, garbage RV s, also down right criminal. Do your self a favor and rent somewhere else.

Calgary might be an excellent option for a fun getaway with your family or a romantic getaway with your significant other. A trip to Alberta's largest city will undoubtedly be worth the trip for its unique sites and welcoming atmosphere! Whatever you call it, there's just something about Calgary. Whether it's 'Cowtown' or 'Stampede City,' or 'Cal-Gary' (the sign of an out-of-towner)...whatever you call it, you'll feel it. With more than one million population, Calgary is a Canadian metropolis in Alberta. As the province's largest city, Calgary has become a tourism hot spot.

Calgary Highlights

We have compiled a detailed list of Calgary highlights to help you make the most of your trip to Calgary.

1. Culture and History

It is estimated that the Blackfoot tribes and others lived without interruption by settlers thousands of years ago when Alaska Natives founded Calgary. With the establishment of Fort Calgary in 1876, the town began its trajectory toward homesteading and the early oil boom. With over one million residents, Calgary is one of the best places to visit in Canada .

2. The Great Outdoors: City Attractions + Mountains Adventure

During your stay here, you can experience the best of both worlds. Within a short drive, you can find the stunning Canadian Rocky Mountains and the vibrant city. A dynamic community, fantastic nightlife, and a variety of people, places, and things to see are all available in the city. In the evening, you can catch a local show and have dinner in the town after hiking in the mountains. It is an awe-inspiring experience to explore Banff & Lake Louise. It offers a different perspective when the grand landscape and towering mountains surround you. The Canadian landscape can be examined, and you can connect with nature.

Interesting Spots to Visit in Calgary

Various attractions await you in Calgary that will spark your imagination and make your heart race. This city has tons of fun things to do to make your visit unforgettable, from the historic side of Calgary at Fort Calgary to the sky-high views of the Buffalo Jump.

1. Banff & Lake Louise

A beautiful natural landscape can be found inside Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta. You can enjoy innumerable activities in this National Park, from breathtaking mountain views to ski resorts and stunning lakes. Choosing between Banff National Park and various adventure activities like hiking, biking, and skiing can be challenging. Still, if you're looking for an adrenaline rush, some adventure activities, or just a place to bask in the sunshine, there's no better place than Banff.

2. Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump

Suppose you're a history or archaeology buff. In that case, you should consider some of the epic days trip near Calgary if you're staying for a more extended period. It is renowned worldwide for preserving the exquisite culture of Plains People at Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump. These giant beasts were hunted by the Plains People, an aboriginal group from the area who built highly complex butchering and processing facilities after chasing them over cliffs. The site has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an essential aspect of Canada's archaeological past.

3. Fort Calgary

Calgary offers plenty of opportunities to experience and explore the past, including the prehistoric past. Fort Calgary, located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, is a living museum illustrating Calgary's beginnings in 1875. The Calgary Mounted Police Museum highlights our rich history, allows you to take a virtual tour of the city from a streetcar, and lets you see what it was like when the first train arrived. Despite the humble beginnings of Calgary and the long journey we have had to make to get where we are, we are very proud of the city.

4. Kensington Village

A visit to Kensington Village in Calgary offers you an urban village experience that you can't find anywhere else. Over 250 shops, restaurants, and services are available at the mall. A day, an overnight, or even a weekend can be spent here at one of Calgary's cool community spots. Bike rides and strolls are accessible on these pedestrian-friendly local streets. You can buy souvenirs from the village shops and grab a bite to eat in the charming cafes. A few steps away from the bar, you'll find The Container Bar, where you can enjoy drinks outside on our open patio.

5. Prince's Island Park

There are many recreational activities at Prince's Island Park, an urban oasis in the heart of Calgary. During the summer, Prince's Island Park offers walking trails, flower gardens, and canoe access to the river. The Park also has picnic areas and water fountains for children. The River Café offers excellent coffee and cross-country skiing opportunities on the lagoon and outdoor skating in the winter. An environmental educational pathway and recreational resource, the Chevron Learning Pathway runs along the East end of the Park. Calgary Folk Festival and Canada Day celebrations are also held in the Park throughout the year.

When to Visit Calgary?

Calgary is a year-round destination , but May and September are the best times to visit. Travel is prevalent during the summer months. The world-renowned Calgary Stampede takes place in July, one of the city's top festivals between June and August. You can enjoy quite a bit of magic in Calgary during winter if you aren't deterred by the cold Canadian winters. You can cross-skate on the city's many trails or ice skate on the city's ice rinks.

Parkland puts 157 convenience store and gas station locations up for sale Back to video

The Calgary-based company said Tuesday it is partnering with NRC Realty & Capital Advisors LLC and Colliers Canada to find buyers.

The assets up for sale include locations under the Chevron, Ultramar, Pioneer and FasGas brands as well as the On the Run convenience store banner.

The bulk of the stations are in Quebec and Ontario, with the balance in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

In an emailed statement, Francis Lapointe, Parkland’s vice-president of Canadian retail operations, said the decision to sell the stations is part of the company’s ongoing network planning and optimization process.

“As we continue to grow, we have identified sites that no longer fit our long-term strategic objectives in their current format,” Lapointe said.

“While high-quality, these locations would be better suited under someone else’s ownership.”

Parkland said the retail and fuel locations will be packaged with long-term Parkland fuel supply agreements, which should make them attractive to “experienced, entrepreneurial operators.”

Parkland has 4,000 retail and fuel locations in Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean.

The company also owns and operates the Burnaby, B.C. refinery, which provides about a quarter of the gasoline and diesel used in the western province.

The gas and convenience store sale process comes as the company faces calls from New York-based activist investor Engine Capital LP for a complete board overhaul at the company.

In addition, Parkland saw the resignation of two board members who represented its largest shareholder, Simpson Oil at the end of last year.

Simpson has said it will evaluate its options to protect its shareholder rights once restrictions under an agreement that limits its ability to nominate and vote for board members at Parkland expire on March 31.

Parkland’s annual general meeting is set to take place in Calgary on Thursday.
