Diverse doesn't begin to describe the wonders in store during this 27 day Malaysia and Indonesia tour.

National parks teeming with wildlife, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Malacca, a teeming potpourri of Asian and aboriginal culture and the Old and New World collision that is Kuala Lumpur beckons in Malaysia.

Indonesia, for its part, offers far more than just the legendary beach in Bali. This equatorial country features awe inspiring sights at every turn, whether it's an intricate Hindu temple surrounded by lush, terraced rice paddies or a laconic orangutan reaching for a tender shoot in the jungles of Borneo.

Combined, the countries form the crux of a once in a lifetime vacation that should be on any adventurous traveller's to do list.

In Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, you'll be hard pressed to miss the iconic Petronas Towers, the tallest pair in the world at 88 stories each. Particularly impressive at night, Islamic influences can be seen in each of the tower's five tiers representing the five pillars of Islam. Unparalleled shopping experiences can be found in the glittery malls or street-side in bustling Chinatown. Included in the city tour is a visit to the National Museum.

Up next, Malacca, that features a dizzying array of cultural touchstones owing to its history as a trading port and successive colonial occupations, each one leaving its mark. See the Stadhuys, a collection of red hued buildings from the 1650s that once housed the Dutch town hall.

Also in the famous town square is the Portuguese fortress of Porta de Santiago and St. Paul's Church, resting place of St Francis Xavier. Nearby, the 17th-century Chinese Cheng Hoon Teng temple has ornate decorations and multiple prayer halls. And don't forget to try some of the ubiquitous spicy food that often combines influences from disparate culinary traditions.

Our Malaysia and Indonesia tours continues on to Kuching and a visit to the nearby, living museum of Sarawak Cultural Village that depicts the heritage of the myriad ethnic groups known to the region amid a spectacular equatorial backdrop. A second day trip from Kuching saves time along the way to better understand some of the jungle produce so crucial to the local economies and culminates with a visit to a longhouse dwelling typical of the area. Finally there's a tour of Kuching proper, a city noted for the bustle of its many artisans and tradespeople practicing their craft in ways virtually unchanged since the 19th century. Other highlights here include a Taoist temple and the breathtaking Catholic Cathedral.

Onwards to Miri, the gateway to Borneo, for an overnight before driving to Niah National Park. Featuring remains of people dating back 40,00 years, and the spectacular Grand Cave with its Iron Age cave paintings, the site is among the world's most important archeological sites.

Day 8 brings you to the heavily forested Brunei and a sightseeing tour of the imposing golden-domed Jame Asr Hassani Bolkiah Mosque, ahead of an afternoon cruise to the enormous water village of Kampung Ayer. Also on the itinerary in Brunei is Istana Nurul Iman, largest, residential palace on Earth and a visit to the Royal Regalia Building.

A drive through the Crocker Range soon immerses tour participants in the abundant biodiversity of Kundasang's Mountain Garden, followed by an exhilarating rainforest canopy walk in Poring.

Your immersion in the jungle continues in Sandakan, home to the world's largest orangutan sanctuary with plenty of time allotted to familiarize yourself with these iconic, orange, forest dwellers and their care. That's followed by stay at a rainforest lodge and a cruise up the Kinabatangan River to view even more of the fauna and flora of this astonishing region including the aptly named proboscis monkey.

Following a return to the teeming waterfront markets of Sandakan, our Malaysia and Indonesia tour continues in Sumatra's largest city, Medan, with its remnants of Dutch colonialism and plethora of shops. A short city tour is followed by a boat cruise and full day at Samosir Island; an island within an island in Lake Toba formed by a super volcano some 75,000 years ago. Of note here is the distinctive animist culture of the local Batak people.

Next, it's on to Beraslagi, after crossing from the island on a narrow land bridge and with time for a stop at the impressive and picturesque (nearly 400 foot tall) Si Piso-Piso Waterfalls. On the same day visit a Karo Batak village in this highly volcanic area.

Yogyakarta, in the heart of Java at the base of a volcano, is the next destination. It's the base for visitation of Indonesia's most famous and extensive Hindu temple site Prambanan. Built in the 10th century, this UNESCO Heritage site is the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia.

Three tall and pointed temples are decorated with reliefs illustrating the epic of the Ramayana, in honour of the three great Hindu divinities and three temples are dedicated to the animals who serve them. Back in Yogyakarta sightseeing continues with The Sultan's Palace -that includes the Golden Pavilion - and the nearby Taman Sari (Water Castle) with its ruins, pools and underground passages among the highlights.

Prepare to be impressed by the next attraction, Borobudur, largest stupa-style Buddhist monument in the world. Laid out in the form of a lotus, the temple compounds with its stepped, unroofed pyramid consisting of ten terraces, crowned by a large, bell-shaped dome is a harmonious marriage of stupas, temple and mountain and a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture.

Iconic Bali (home to the majority of Indonesia's Hindu population) follows, beginning in the east coast town of Candidasa. After a visit to the native, walled village of Tenganan, its on to the ancient law courts of Klung Klung and finally Bali's most significant temple Besakih.

En route to Lovina, located on the northeastern side of the island, stops are made at the village of Penglipuran; Kintamani, with its scenic views of Mt. Batur and Lake Batur and Beji Temple, notable for its Barong architecture and stunning relief carvings.

A day is then set aside back in Lovina for exploration of nearby markets and exploration of the Buddhist monastery Brahma Arama Vihara.

After travel through the amazing rice terraces at Pupuan, it's on to the mysterious and alluring artists' village of Ubud. Ubud is known for its spiritualists and seekers. The size of the town's expat community attests to this, as do the many novels and films set here.

It's a place where traditional Balinese culture imbues every waking moment. An artist's haven, it's the best place to buy Balinese handicrafts and a fitting place to end what will surely be remembered as the holiday of a lifetime.

Day 1 Arrival in Kuala Lumpur Today we arrive in Kuala Lumpur, (Peninsular) Malaysia. Malaysia's capital is a curious blend of the old and new. It is also a blend of cultures; the Malay capital has a vibrant Chinatown and an Indian quarter. Kuala Lumpur means "muddy confluence" which is an apt description of this town which grew up as a trading post and tin mining shanty town, and later became a modern cosmopolitan business hub. Overnight in Kuala Lumpur. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Kuala Lumpur: City Tour Despite rapid development, Kuala Lumpur has managed to retain her charm, with a skyline that blends the Old World with the New. We start the day with a visit to the Menara Kuala Lumpur that offers a birds-eye view of the entire city and its surrounds. We will see the contrast of the distinctive Indo-Moorish architecture and the ultra modern edifices, the Petronas Twin Towers. Later we drive past the elegant Jamek Mosque, which occupies the symbolic birthplace of Kuala Lumpur and the bustling Chinatown at Petaling Street before a photo stop at the majestic Royal Palace. After lunch we visit the National Museum where historical Malaysian artifacts and replicas among others are on display. Time permitting we will take a stroll at the beautiful Lake Gardens located within the vicinity of National Monument and Merdeka Square. Overnight in Kuala Lumpur. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Kuala Lumpur & Malacca We depart after breakfast for a visit to the historic town of Malacca, founded by a fleeing prince from Sumatra in 14th century. Later it developed into a major trading port for ships from India and China. From its early days as a traders meeting point to the successive colonial occupation by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and Japanese, each culture left behind its mark or monument creating a historical showcase. Today you will find many remnants of the mixed history of this city dating back more than 500 years. The oldest established town in Malaysia, Malacca is particularly famous for its Town Square and surrounding monuments. Our tour visits the red coloured Stadhuys, Cheng Hoon Teng, the oldest Chinese temple on the Malay peninsula, the Portuguese fortress Porta de Santiago built in 1511 and St Paul's Church where St Francis Xavier was buried. Malacca is well-known for its eclectic food. Most notable of all is the Nyonya-Baba cuisine which is a mixture of Chinese (mostly southern Hokkien or Fujian influence), Portuguese, Dutch, Indian, British and Malay cooking with most dishes being spicy in nature. DUE TO OUR (LIKELY) EARLY DEPARTURE tomorrow morning, we are including lunch today instead of dinner. Overnight in Kuala Lumpur. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4 Kuala Lumpur - Fly to Kuching, Sarawak (Borneo) Today we fly to Kuching in Sarawak in northwestern Borneo. Upon arrival we will transfer to our hotel. This afternoon we travel to the award winning "Sarawak Cultural Village". This living museum depicts the heritage of the major racial groups in Sarawak and conveniently portrays the respective lifestyle amidst 14 acres of equatorial vegetation. Here it is possible to see Sarawak's ethnic diversity at a glance. We end the day at the Kuching waterfront. The river is important as a transport link in the past, is still a central feature of the city with a beautifully landscaped waterfront promenade providing a superb and relaxing venue for strolls any time of the day. Overnight in Kuching. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Kuching & Longhouse Visit Early this morning we depart Kuching by road, passing pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantations. As we continue upcountry we make a few stops to see where a variety of jungle produce, such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and unusual tropical fruit are on display. Our destination is a longhouse, which is, as its name suggests, an extended family environment where many families live out their existence under a single roof. The longhouse has an open verandah that offers a marvelous view of rural life in the form of paddy fields, rubber plantations and the like. Today in the more rural areas of Sarawak, there are longhouse dwellings where life is more simple, idyllic and nature-oriented. We will be greeted with a welcome dance followed by a walk about during which we are treated to various cultural performances, including dancing and drumming. Return to Kuching in the late afternoon. Overnight in Kuching. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6 Kuching: City Tour - Fly to Miri This morning we embark on a tour of Kuching. Arguably one of the most attractive cities in Southeast Asia, Kuching has adapted modern amenities without losing its old trading centre charm. Once the home of the Rajahs Brooke, their legacy is evident in the old buildings still in use today. Included on our tour: the Cat Monument, Sarawak's oldest Tua Pek Kong Taoist Temple, the Civic Center, the award winning Catholic Cathedral, and the the multi-purpose market where tin smiths, rattan workers, coffin makers, Chinese herbalists and gold smiths ply their specialised trades in a setting little changed from the 19th century. A highlight of the day is a visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum. This afternoon, we fly to Miri (still in Sarawak, Borneo), an interesting place unto itself and the gateway for the neighbouring country of Brunei. Overnight in Miri. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Miri & Niah National Park and the Great Cave This morning we drive 110 km to the world famous Niah National Park. Although one of Sarawak's smallest national parks, it is one of the most important and unusual with its main claim to fame being known as the birthplace of human civilization in the region. The oldest modern human remains in Southeast Asia along with many other relics of prehistoric man dating from 40,000 years ago were discovered here in 1958 making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. After registration at the park headquarters, and a brief look at the information centre we take a short boat to cross the river to visit Niah Museum. After our museum visit we walk 3 km along a level boardwalk to the main cave entrance.* The walk to the Grand Cave takes about 45 minutes and is fascinating in its own right as you pass close to giant Tapang trees (Koompassia excelsa) with their enormous buttressed roots, pandanus plants twice the size of a person and colourful orchids and tree fungi. In the Painted Cave you see the prehistoric wall drawing as well as the preserved remains of stone age people dating back 40,000 years. The Great Cave as the name suggests, is an enormous cavern surrounded by dense primary rainforest. The Great Cave is not only important archaeological site, where it was inhabited by man for 40,000 years, but the cave is also full bats and birds, especially the Black-nest Swiftlets. Return to Miri. * Please note that this requires stamina and an ability to be steady on one's feet, to be able to navigate uneven, possibily wet/slippery surfaces, and to endure some heat over the course of several hours. Overnight in Miri. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Miri, Malaysia - Brunei Darussalam A 2-hour drive this morning takes us to Brunei is a small oil rich country just 443 km (277 miles) north of the equator in the northwest corner of Borneo, bounded on all landward sides by Sarawak (Malaysia) which splits Brunei into two parts. The landscape is mainly equatorial jungle cut by rivers. It is a heavily forested state and most human activity is restricted either to coastal areas or estuaries. Today our sightseeing tour will include the magnificent golden-domed Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque.* The mosque with its domes, mosaic patterns, surrounding gardens and imposing minarets plated with 24 carat gold, was built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the King's reign. In the afternoon we will take a cruise to visit the Kampung Ayer water village, said to be the largest water village in the world. This village has been in continuous habitation since 1521. Here we will witness a traditional way of life, with stilt houses built over the Brunei River (though today most of the inhabitants enjoy modern facilities). Our tour of the city today will also include a view of the spectacular Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and a visit to one of the local markets. * Though unlikely, it is possible that mosques can be closed at any time without notice. This could be due to security concerns, maintenance, or for official visits by dignitaries or members of the royal family. Overnight in Brunei. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Brunei Darussalam Touring - Fly to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia We have most of the day in Brunei to continue with our sightseeing tour. Today we visit to the Royal Regalia Building, with its amazing array of chariots, weapons, crowns, thrones and other paraphenalia. There will be a chance for a photo opportunity of the magnificent Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan's Royal Palace for his first wife, and also the largest residential palace in the world. We arrive at the park headquarters at the Kundasang Visitor Centre and Mountain Garden, home to some of the 24 species of flowering rhododendrons, 10 species of carnivorous pitcher plants, an estimated 1,400 species of orchids, over 600 species of ferns, and more than 40 species of oak trees and over 300 species of birds. We continue 40 km / 25 mi journey to Poring where we explore tropical rainforest on a treetop canopy walkway suspended 41 m / 135 ft above the forest floor. After our visit we return to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight in Kota Kinabalu. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Kota Kinabalu - Fly to Sandakan - Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary - Sukau A short flight takes us to Sandakan on the far northern tip of Borneo, from where we transfer to Sepilok, the largest orangutan sanctuary in the world.* The sanctuary was founded in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned orangutans. The site is 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve, and today around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve. The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orangutans as well as dozens of other wildlife species. Some of the other animals which have been treated at the centre include sun bears, gibbons, Sumatran rhinos, and elephants. Later we continue by road to our rainforest lodge. * Depending on our timing for today, we may visit the orangutans this afternoon or on the morning of Day 13. Overnight in Sukau region. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Oxbow Lakes & Sukau Today we wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. Early this morning we have a river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to view more birds and wildlife. We proceed to the Kelenanap ox-bow lake while searching for more wildlife. In the afternoon, we take a river cruise in search of wild proboscis monkeys as they settle down on treetops along the Kinabatangan River. After dinner there is an optional night cruise for spotting nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds. Overnight in Sukau region. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 13 Sukau - Sandakan - Fly to Kota Kinabalu Today we return to Sandakan and, time-permitting, have some sightseeing in Sandakan before catching our flight to Kota Kinabalu. Sandakan's main attraction is its hot, steamy waterfront -- a teeming, chaotic multi-purpose place where the fish and central market, hawker stalls and transport all seem to combine a profusion of colour and activity. In the market's dark aisles can be found conches and fish bigger than shovels. Later today we transfer to the airport for our flight to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight in Kota Kinabalu. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia - Medan, Indonesia Today we fly to Medan, the main city in northern Sumatra. North Sumatra is a land of great mountains, waterfalls, lakes, a mixture of cultural groups, plantations of rubber, tobacco, palm oil, and coffee. Overnight in Medan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Medan - Samosir Island, Lake Toba After breakfast we depart for a brief city tour of Medan. We stop to see the Maimoon Palace, recently renovated from its original founding in 1888 by the Sultan of Deli. We will also stop to visit the Grand Mosque, built in the Moroccan style. Before leaving Medan, we'll also visit Tjong a Fie Mansion. Often referred to as a "historical jewel," the 35-room, 2-storey mansion was built in 1895 by the Hakka merchant who came to own much of the land in Medan through his plantations while contributing to the building of the island’s railway. Afterwards we travel southwards by road from Medan to Lake Toba, where we take a ferry across the lake to Samosir Island. At 630 sq km, Samosir is notable as being the largest island within an island, and the fifth largest lake island in the world. This is a full day of travel with stops for rest and points of interest. Overnight on Samosir Island. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Samosir Island, Lake Toba The island is the centre of Batak culture, and has several villages of historical interest. Here, traditional houses are made of wood with high roofs; the main posts, walls, and gable ends carry carved decorations of buffalo horns. We will learn about the animist culture of the Batak people with visits to the cultural centre and some unusual houses, with roofs shaped like boats. The Batak were formerly head-hunters and cannibals, and due to their isolation in the high mountains, they have retained many of the ancient proto-Malay cultural traditions. According to tradition, all Bataks are descendants of Si Raja Batak, a hero-ancestor of super-natural parentage born on a holy mountain adjacent to Lake Toba. Today they maintain a tight-knit and distinctive culture. Our stops today include a visit to the King Sidabutar Tomb in Tomok, a stop at the 300-year old stone chairs, site of village discussions and decisions, and we explore the museum at Simanindo, converted from a traditional house lived in by Rajah Simalungun, a Batak king. We will enjoy the view from one of the highest points on the island where we can begin to appreciate the massive volcanic explosion that formed both Samosir Island and Lake Toba. We continue back to our hotel on Samosir Island for the night. We usually have some free time in the afternoon to enjoy our resort and/or swim in the lake. Overnight on Samosir Island. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Samosir Island - Berastagi This morning we take a long, leisurely drive toward Berastagi, starting across the narrow land bridge that connects the "island" to the mainland. This region of North Sumatra is volcanic in nature and many sulfurous hot springs are to be found. At the northern end of Lake Toba we stop to see the impressive 120 m (394 ft) high Si Piso-Piso Waterfalls. From the viewpoint at the top of the falls there is a 360-degree panoramic view over Lake Toba and the surrounding countryside. The area to the north of Lake Toba is known as Karoland, or the Karo Highlands, as it is where the Karo Batak tribal people live. The five Karo Batak clans and 83 subclans inhabit a high, lush plateau of mountain slopes and rich volcanic valleys in the area between Lake Toba and Medan. There are many volcanoes in the area, some of them still steaming. Gunung Sibayak at 2070 m (6,790 ft) and Gunung Sinabung at 2417 m (7,930 ft) are the highest and can be seen from many locations as we explore the area. We will have the opportunity to stop in Dokan, a Karo Batak village. Overnight in Berastagi. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 18 Berastagi - Medan (Sumatra) - Yogyakarta (Java) This morning we drive from Berastagi to Medan (2-3 hours with stops) and fly to Yogyakarta, Java's cultural heart. Located at the foot of the volcano Merapi, the fertile plain of Yogyakarta was, in the 16th and 17th century, the seat of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataran. NOTE: Our flight from Medan to Yogyakarta will likely transit through Jakarta. Overnight in Yogyakarta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Yogyakarta - Prambanan - Yogyakarta: City Tour Today we visit the most extensive Hindu temple site in Indonesia -- Prambanan. Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia, located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest Hindu temples in Southeast Asia. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the 47m (154 ft) high central building inside a large complex of individual temples. It was built around AD 850 by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the second Mataram dynasty, or Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya Dynasty. Not long after its construction, the temple was abandoned and began to deteriorate. After our comprehensive guided tour, we return to Yogyakarta. This afternoon's sightseeing includes the Sultan's palace, the Kraton, a vast complex of courtyards, halls and pavilions in Javanese traditional style. The most important structure is the Golden Pavillion; ornately carved, and heavily gilded, its graceful roof is supported by finely carved wooden beams. Here the Sultan used to receive royal guests and hold balls and banquets. We also visit the nearby Taman Sari (Water Castle), the ruins, pools, arches and underground passages of the former pleasure gardens. It was built in 1758 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I as a rest house and pleasure park for the Royal Family. At some point during our stay in Yogyakarta we hope to attend a performance of the Ramayana ballet, a dance based on ancient Hindu folklore. Overnight in Yogyakarta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 20 Yogyakarta - Borobudur - Yogyakarta From Yogyakarta we drive north to the largest stupa-style Buddhist monument in the world -- Borobudur. This incredible monument, built and decorated before AD 800, should be on anybody's list of the ten greatest art-complexes in the world for its size, quality, sophistication and excellent state of preservation. Borobudur was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2500 sq m. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO's help in the 1970s. After a guided site tour, we return to Yogyakarta. Your afternoon is free. Wandering in the narrow streets of the markets you will see many beautiful crafts for sale, including the famous wayang wooden and leather puppets, but especially the batik. Yogyakarta is famous for its batik. Overnight in Yogyakarta. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 21 Yogyakarta (Java) - Denpasar (Bali) - Candidasa Today we fly from Yogyakarta to Denpasar (possibly via another connecting point) on the island of Bali and transfer to our hotel at Candidasa. Bali is home to the vast majority of Indonesia's small Hindu minority. 93.18% of Bali's population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, while most of the remainder follow Islam. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music. On arrival at Denpasar airport, we travel by road through verdant Balinese countryside to the east coast town of Candidasa, a tranquil coastal area nestled between the Lombok Strait to the east and mountains to the west. Candidasa is within close proximity to many historical landmarks of Bali. Overnight in Candidasa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 22 Candidasa: Eastern Bali & Besakih Temple Today we explore the highlands and the east coast area of Bali where elegant Balinese Hindu temples sprout amid lush green rice terraces. We will also visit the native village of Tenganan, a symmetrically laid out Bali Aga village with walled homes and unique crafts. Bali Aga was the original inhabitant of Bali, before the arrival of Hindu Javanese. Tenganan retains its ancient pre-Hindu customs through a strong code of non-fraternization with outsiders, further enforced by the protection of its surrounding walls. We continue to the ancient law courts at Klung Kung. Klung Kung was the oldest Kingdom on the island, and its "raja" was the most exalted. At the walled-in "Court of Justice", which dates from the 18th century, a mural portrays punishment in hell and the rewards of heaven. Our final stop is Bali's most important temple, Besakih, and sacred Mount Agung. This volcano is to the Balinese what Mount Olympus was to the ancient Greeks. Steps over 1,000 years old ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where there are many shrines. This temple was built on a site where animist rites, ceremonies and feasts once took place. The structure incorporates the holy triad of temples venerating the Hindu trinity. Every district of the island maintains its own temple within the complex. Overnight in Candidasa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 23 Candidasa - Penglipuran - Lovina Today we journey from Candidasa to Lovina. En route we will stop at Penglipuran village, well known for its tidy row of traditional Balinese entrance gates and its unique architectural traditions. The village has also succeeded in preserving its 75-hectare bamboo forest located in the northern part of the village. We also stop at Kintamani, famous for its view of Mt. Batur and Lake Batur. The whole area around Kintamani is known for its orange groves. After a lunch break here, we continue to Beji Temple (Pura Beji), an excellent example of the colourful architectural style of northern Bali. The temple is famous for its Barong architecture and virtuoso relief carvings. Our destination is Lovina, a coastal area on the northeastern side of the island containing the small villages of Temukus, Kalibukbuk and Anturan. It is becoming more popular with tourists but remains far quieter than the tourist hotspots of the island's south side. At night the whole fishing fleet is working, their lanterns glowing yellow along the ocean front. Overnight in Lovina. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 24 Lovina Area This morning we check out the spices and fruits at Lake Bratan market. Making our way back toward Lovina we visit the Buddhist monastery of Brahma Arama Vihara. It is a spectacular looking place, and a bit out of place in Hindu Bali. It is the most important Buddhist monastery in Bali and is complete with golden Buddha statues and a pristine natural setting. Strictly speaking the monastery is not a tourist site but accepts respectful visitors. We return to Lovina in the afternoon. Overnight in Lovina. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 25 Lovina - Tanah Lot - Ubud Today we depart Lovina and travel past spectacular rice terraces to the artists' village of Ubud. Along the way we visit the spectacular rice terraces at Pupuan. We proceed from there to Tanah Lot, an ocean temple built atop a huge rock surrounded by the sea at high tide by one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java in the 16th century. Its rituals include the paying of homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. Sea snakes found at the base are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. We continue to Ubud, a remarkable town located in the middle of the island. For more than a century, it has been the island's preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. While it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs. Overnight in Ubud. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 26 Ubud: Area Tour Today we a full day exploring the Ubud area. In the morning we attend a Barong traditional dance performance. The Barong play represent an eternal fighting between good and evil spirit. A Barong (a mythological animal) represent good spirit and Rangda (a mythological monster) represent the evil one. Bali is known for its fine arts, and it is in this village that most of the best batik painters, mask carvers, dancers, weavers, and musicians live. This is an excellent place to buy authentic Balinese handicrafts. Overnight in Ubud. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

The rainy season generally lasts from Oct to Feb while the drier, cooler period spans from March/April to Sept. Anyone travelling in any part of Borneo should be aware, however, that rain still does fall frequently even during the 'dry season' and visitors should pack good quality wet-weather gear. INDONESIA: Tropical climate varying from area to area; rainstorms occur all year. Higher regions are cooler. Though the above mentions seasonal differences, the entire region covered by our tour will feature hot and humid conditions at any time.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport throughout will be by private air-conditioned bus. Most of the driving days are not long, usually no more than four hours. We have numerous walking tours and visit several sites that are LARGE with steps and uneven surfaces. Porters are available at hotels but you must be able to manage with your baggage at airports.

Bali Bucket List Original 10 Day Tour

First time doing a tour and I was amazed how smoothly everything operated from start to finish. Ali our tour guide did an incredible job leading the group. He really helped break the ice and made sure everyone was comfortable and having a great time throughout. He also ensured everyones safety and genuinely seemed to care about all of our well beings, which was really nice. Great character, definitely made the trip more enjoyable! The tour its self was nicely paced with plenty of activities to do, from surfing, snorkeling, hiking, to island hopping! We had really good instructors for each activity and again they ensured everyone was having a good time and looking out for our safety. It was all quite flexible as well depending on the group and individuals which was nice too. Such a lovely experience, great way to see Bali in a short space of time with some amazing people. Would highly recommend and be keen to do it all over again!

Vitor was absolutely amazing! He made everyone feel at home from the get-go and made an effort to form bonds with all 15 of us. He was fun, energetic and inclusive of everyone. You could tell he absolutely loves what he does, and the reflected in the fun we had doing all the different activities. Doing the tour was the best time of my life, and I have Vitor to thank for that. He’s an absolute legend! I highly encourage anyone who is thinking of travelling to do it through Intro, and if you happen to have Vitor as your tour leader, you are one of the luckiest people on her planet!

Wanderlands Bali & Lombok - 13 Days

The tour was one of the best experiences of my life and I would definitely do it again anytime. Stacia, our group leader, brought us together as a group, always put us in a good mood and was always there for us. Everything was well planned and we were able to experience a lot in a short space of time. My highlights were surfing, as well as the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida and of course all the evenings together. I would recommend the tour to anyone who wants to travel to Bali and make friends from all over the world.

Komodo Island Hopper Tour

Komodo Island Hopper

Eman was super helpful & friendly. He know lots of good info about the places we visited & gave us lots of travel tips for each destination. The trip went to all the best off the beaten track spots in Indonesia. We got exclusive experiences that other companies don’t offer in this country such as live aboard boat trip & visiting Moyo island & Satona island. Snorkelling with mantarays & seeing the Komodo dragons were highlights as was hiking to the viewpoint on padar island at sunset. Highly recommend!

Bali 9 Day/ 8 Night Group Tour | ULTIMATE Tour

Bali 9 Day/ 8 Night Group Tour | ULTIMATE

If you want to experience Bali then this is such a good way to see all the best bits! Aggy was our tour guide, she is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met. Always attentive, caring and put so much effort into the group. All of the activities that we did were amazing, particularly the mountain climb! It was unreal! The places we stayed were good, always were hotels with breakfast included. I’d fully recommend doing this tour if you want to experience Bali in a short period. I stayed on in Bali after the tour and Aggy sorted my onward travel and waited for us all to depart safely. On the other hand, this was my second Ultimate tour and I was very surprised when she had to stay in separate accommodation. Especially as it could be about 15/30minutes away. There should be some more money in her budget to stay in the same accommodation just in case there was anything to happen. Overall, sun was out and couldn’t complain!

7 Days Bali and Gili Islands Epic Experience

This is a great way to see many highlights of Bali through a variety of activities! There were 3 guides with our small group of 6, providing us flexibility to split up and see what was most interesting to each oerson. They all did a fantastic job making sure to take care of all we requested and prospectively what we didn't know we needed, and we always felt safe. Highly recommend this tour!

10 Days The Best of Bali, Gilis and Nusa Penida Island Experience

I recently had the pleasure of traveling with The Bali Trip Mate, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget. Everything from the outset was meticulously organized, ensuring that our trip was seamless from start to finish. The tour guides and drivers were not only knowledgeable about the region but exuded a passion that made our journey even more enjoyable. What stood out the most was their prompt response to any minor issues we encountered, ensuring that our comfort and satisfaction remained a top priority. The Bali Trip Mate truly knows how to craft memorable experiences, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for an unparalleled Bali adventure. Kudos to the entire team!

Reviews of Indonesia Tours

Bali was amazing , good food good mates
It was an incredible experience. Hendri is an amazing tour guide that made it such an amazing time and I'm so grateful for the brilliant job he does. He is such a genuinely kind person and really good at bringing out the best in everyone, making sure everyone is having a fun time. He legit took care of every detail and was so organised so that we could all have the best holiday and not have to worry about anything. It was clear everyone he crossed paths thought really highly of him and he made such an effort to show kindness have positive relationships with all the locals we met along the way. Some of the experiences you do on intro travel are really memories for life - things like meeting the most beautiful family in a local village and exploring the ocean looking for dolphins and sea turtles and exploring rice fields. Highly recommend :)

Indonesia tour operator excellent review

Jodi at Go Indonesia Tours set out the perfect and flawless Indonesia vacation for our group. Not only she allowed me to change the itinerary at least 5 times (up to 3 weeks before departure) but her quoted price was also extremely competitive as it included daily cars/drivers and guides when required to escort me to different tourist attractions. For 9 days of our Indonesia tour, we followed the tour without a single hitch. Staff, tour guides, hotels, and drivers were positive, punctual, charming, and friendly. An endearing, charismatic adventure surrounded by beautiful people. Flights, restaurants, and hotels were confirmed for us before we go. All of us were extremely impressed with all facets of this tour company's quality of service.

Travel guide, 1. when is the best time to visit indonesia.

Due to temperatures hovering around 28 degrees Celsius, Indonesia is a year-round destination for traveling. .

The best months to visit Indonesia are months of the dry season including May, June and September. You’ll get clear days in the islands without crowds or expensiveness as in peak season (July and August). Besides, it is not as hot and humid so ideal for long hikes and cycle rides.

The dry season is wonderful for diving and surfing, but it also depends on which part of the archipelago you’re visiting. The suitable months for diving off the coast of Bali, Lombok and Komodo National Park are April to September, while the best time for diving around Maluku and Papua are from October to April.

3. What are top Indonesia Tourist Attractions?

Here are the top contenders to consider for your Indonesia trip.

Bali is famous for emerald-green rice terraces and artistic culture. There are plenty of accommodation, shops and bars in the sweep of golden sand lines of Kuta-Legian-Seminyak, contrasting to wilder beaches in Canggu. For activities, the Bukit peninsula is a surfing hotspot, and the tranquil island of Nusa Lembongan and beach resorts of Amed and Padang Bai have excellent snorkelling and diving. Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali for its traditional dance and music performances and cluster of yoga studios and art galleries.

Lombok and Gili Islands

Lombok has more pristener than its neighbors with unspoilt beaches, fresh atmosphere and less traffic.Visually it’s gorgeous, with the awesome bulk of Gunung Rinjani rising above turquoise crater lakes. Just off shore, the fabled Gili Islands are ringed by white-sand beaches and pristine coral reefs.

The center of Java is dominated by volcanoes. To the south is the homeland of the ethnic Javanese and the centre of their traditional arts, culture and language from the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Solo. To the east, the volcanic massif of Gunung Bromo is excellent for hiking, especially at sunrise. Elsewhere are the ancient temples of the Dieng Plateau, the turquoise lake of Kawah Ijen and the palm-fringed beaches around Pangandaran.

Most of the highlights are clustered to the north of the old Trans-Sumatran highway: the orangutan-filled jungles of Bukit Lawang; Danau Toba, the spiritual heartland of the fascinating Batak tribe; the twin volcanoes of Berastagi; and the diving sites of Pulau Weh. To the west you’ll discover Bukittinggi – the cultural capital of the Minangkabau Highlands – and the jungle-rimmed lake of Danau Maninjau.

Flores comprises one of the most alluring landscapes in Indonesia. The volcanic spine of the island soars to 2500m, and it is fresher than its scorched neighbours. The most arresting sight is Kelimutu: the three craters of this extinct volcano each contain a lake of different, vibrant and gradually changing colours.

Off the west coast of Flores lies Komodo National Park, which is home to the endemic Komodo dragon. They are the largest extant lizard in the world.. 8. Activities shouldn't be missed when traveling to Indonesia?

See Ubud and its rice terraces!

Beside sandy beaches, big waves, and hedonistic nightlife, Bali also is gorgeous with verdant rice terraces in the center of the island.  Although some of the local people gradually are making their living from tourism, others still remain rice farmers. In Bali, you can find the most beautiful rice terraces located in Tegalalang Ubud.

Monkey Forest

If you arrive at Ubud, remember to visit the Monkey Forest. A beautiful forest covered with tropical trees, which is home to about 600 macaques. It’s an ideal walk for seeing wild monkeys. Local guards sell bananas, so you can feed the curious monkeys directly from your hand. However, the monkeys are mischievous and sometimes pesky. Therefore, protect your belongings and don’t show defiance to avoid their attack.

Visit the Tanah Lot Temple in Bali

This Hindu temple is perched on top of an outcrop. It is famous for its spectacular sunsets and picturesque views. It can only be accessed during low tide and therefore it’s best to check the times before going there.

Climb a Volcano!

Tour itinerary

Malaysian capital, kuala lumpur, batu caves, bird park, petronas towers and light show.

We begin our family tour by arriving in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and check into a 4* hotel. We get acquainted with the group and the tour leader and rest. For dinner, go to the most popular food street - Jalan Alor. Vegetarians and meat-eaters, lovers of vegetables, tofu, and seafood fans - here everyone will find suitable dishes. Delicious!

The next morning we take the subway to Batu caves. Discovered by British naturalists in the middle of the wild jungle in 1878, these caves soon became revered by local Hindus. Here they installed a statue of the god Murugan almost 43 meters high. Inside the caves there are two small temples, and the walls and huge ceilings are decorated with curly stalactites. Thin streams of light illuminate these huge caves, where only birds and monkeys lived recently.

We lunch in one of the popular vegetarian restaurants near the caves, and then take the subway to the largest open bird park in the world! Birds of all colors and sizes walk and fly next to you, you can even feed them special food. The park boasts lakes, streams and even an artificial waterfall. Here you forget that you are in the center of a modern metropolis. Children and adults love this place! In the evening we walk around the symbol of the country - the twin towers of Petronas and watch the famous light show of musical fountains.

Singapore, Marina bay sands hotel, Gardens by the bay, Light show

After breakfast we go to the airport and fly to Singapore (one and a half hour flight). We check into a 4* hotel, rest and after lunch begin our walk in the center of the most modern country in the world! We visit the rooftop of the famous Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which resembles a ship, take a walk near the fountains and explore the super modern futuristic Gardens by the Bay.

These artificial trees are capable of many things! For example, they collect rainwater and use it to irrigate real plants automatically. In the evening we will watch the famous light show.

One of the best zoo in the world, Night safari, Chinatown, Temple of The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Next morning we start with a visit to one of the best zoos in the world. Children will be delighted with penguins, polar bears, and proboscis monkeys, and most animals will not be separated from visitors by the fence. Imagine unforgettable emotions when feeding a giraffe!

If you ever wondered what animals do after dark, you will have a chance to find out by visiting the world's first night wildlife park “Night Safari”.

After lunch we stroll through the historic Chinatown, where we visit the country's main Buddhist temple. For dinner we head to the famous food court, where the locals are queuing for dishes featured in newspapers. We will advise only the most delicious!

Best time to visit.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 100s F most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 60s F at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October, it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia truly is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practiced, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank in society (business people, government officials etc.) are afforded much respect. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterized by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population), but is widely available for purchase and consumption. Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Things to try in Malaysia

Delicious roti, chicken rice, spicy sambal eggplant and kopi peng (iced coffee).

2. Baba Nonya/Peranaken Cuisine

Fresh spring rolls, babi chin (stewed pork belly) and Mee Siam (rice noodles).

Aromatic curries, cool lassis, delicious daal and sweet fried coconut balls.

Hearty noodle broths, Peking duck pancakes and chrysanthemum tea. Try some of Malaysia's most famous dishes on our 9day Borneo Family Holiday.

Geography and environment

Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colorful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.

While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkeling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation. Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Top 10 culinary experiences in Malaysia

1. baba nonya banquet.

The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavors and tangy sauces.

2. Savour street eats

The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavor on a budget.

3. Taste some tea

Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held meters apart.

4. Tuck into a hot curry

Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favorite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chili and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavors!

5. Seek out cool city eateries

The hip cafes and bars of Kuala Lumpur are a great place to mix with locals and connect with modern Asian culture. Head to the Jalan Bukit Bintang area in KL and check out the new-age teahouses, cool cafes and international dining options.

6. Down a luscious lassi

With a large Indian population, it’s not hard to find a refreshing Lassi when in Malaysia. Made from yogurt and fresh fruit, sipping a cool Mango Lassi is the ideal antidote to a humid summer’s day.

7. Relish some rice

Chicken–rice is a favorite with locals and travelers alike. Available at small neighborhood eateries, night markets and from street carts, this option is a great, low-cost meal for travelers on the go.

8. Slurp a bowl of laksa

Chicken, prawn, tofu and fish; there are many different varieties of spicy laksa to try while in Malaysia. Noodle types and ingredients may vary around the country - a good excuse to try laksa in every town you visit.

9. Chill out with a coconut

Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.

10. Feast on roti

No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.

Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travelers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique specialty stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Malaysia

1. Kuala Lumpur

The capital’s huge malls offer loads of variety and opportunities to shop. Shoes, bags and accessories are all great buys - from haute couture labels to chic chain-store fashions.

Home to a diverse range of artisans and craftsmen. Browse the markets, galleries and shops to pick up antiques, art and bespoke items. Handcrafted wooden ornaments, leather sandals, vibrant woven bags and antique coins are the best picks.

Boasts an eclectic mix of sleek malls, independent stores, interesting boutiques and open-air street markets. Head to Little India to source Indian-inspired saris, garlands and silver jewelry or stroll along Rope Walk to find one-of-a-kind antiques and treasures.

4. Langkawi

This island has duty-free status, making it a great place to buy fragrances, watches, cameras and other technology. For art lovers, the Craft Cultural Complex showcases locally made fabric, ceramics, baskets and jewelry. Get shopping on our 20day Best of Borneo small group adventure.

Festivals and events

Kuala Lumpur’s Batu Caves light up in honor of the Hindi deity Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan). Pilgrims arrive after sunset and watch as brave individuals thread hooks and skewers through their bodies to carry decorative steel arches to the Gods. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!

Malaysian Grand Prix

For a bit of high-octane fun, see the fastest cars in the world in action at the Malaysian Grand Prix, held near Kuala Lumpur each year.

Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan is observed by the Muslim population of Malaysia. During the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

Do I need a visa to travel to Malaysia?

Most nationalities do not need visas to visit Malaysia as a tourist for up to three months. Please check with your relevant Malaysian embassy or consulate for the latest information.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 73°C to 89°F along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 57°C to 77°F in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see sub-zero temperatures at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.

Can I use my cell phone while in Malaysia?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What to wear in Malaysia

Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like  Borneo  where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Malaysia?

Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Hawker food snack = 7-25 MYR
  • Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
  • Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR
  • Souvenir t-shirt = 10-35 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.

What is ATM access like in Malaysia?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

  • 1 Feb: Federal Territory Day
  • 21 Apr: Hari Raya Puasa (End of Ramadan)
  • 1 May: Labour Day

Tourism Malaysia expects increase in tourist arrivals from Indonesia this year

P UTRAJAYA - Tourism Malaysia expects an increase in tourist arrivals from Indonesia this year, particularly due to the Visit 2024 campaign happening in Melaka, Kelantan, Perak and Perlis.

Last year, Malaysia welcomed over 3.1 million Indonesian tourists, highlighting the vibrant cultural exchange and friendship shared between the two nations.

"This campaign sets the stage for the forthcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026, which aims to attract 35.6 million foreign tourists, targeting a revenue of RM147.1 billion,” Tourism Malaysia said in a statement recently.

The tourism board stressed that Indonesia is still an important market for Malaysia, adding that daily flights from Jakarta by Garuda Indonesia offer hope for recovering from the pandemic and improving the relationship between the two countries.

In addition, the tourism board recently organised a familiarisation trip for travel trade partners and media from Indonesia, to promote Malaysia as the top tourist destination in the region, in partnership with Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and Garuda Indonesia.

Seven travel agents and a media representative from Jakarta visited Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on a four-day, three-night journey from Feb 4 to 7.

The itinerary involved visiting prominent Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition (MICE) venues like the World Trade Centre and Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, as well as hotels including Le Meridien Putrajaya, InterContinental, Four Points and Renaissance. A city tour was also in the schedule.

In Putrajaya, the participants explored Souq Putrajaya, enjoyed a scenic sunset cruise and various engaging activities to enhance their experience.

Additionally, the itinerary included a shopping spree at Exchange 106 @ TRX and Mitsui Sepang KLIA, as well as a half-day inspection tour to Splashmania and Sunway Lagoon Theme Park to experience the latest attractions.

The trip aims to encourage Indonesian travel agents, particularly those focusing on the MICE segment, to actively promote tour packages to Malaysia.

It highlights Indonesia's importance to Malaysia's tourism industry, noting significant growth in arrivals in 2023 and strong connectivity with 628 direct flights per week from Indonesia to Malaysia. - BERNAMA
