Dave Koz celebrates 25 years of Christmas concerts

Dave Koz freely admits that he didn’t necessarily know what he was getting into when he launched a Christmas tour 25 years ago.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” the 59-year-old saxophonist and radio host says with a laugh by phone from Nashville during rehearsals for this year’s tour. But seriously, folks...
“Back then I’d never seen this kind of tour during the holidays -- our kind of instrumental jazz, pop, whatever you want to call it, represented during the holiday season,” Koz explains. “So I did an album (”December Makes Me Feel This Way”) and got some friends together and put a show together and...the rest is history, I guess.”
Koz and company are, in fact, going out on a 25th-anniversary edition of the Dave Koz & Friends Christmas tour, a 24-date trek that includes a show in Columbus on Dec. 10 and in Cleveland on Dec. 11 at the Connor Palace Theater. It comes alongside a new album, “Christmas Ballads (25th Anniversary Collection)” and the tour lineup includes original “cast members” Peter White on guitar and Rick Braun on trumpet as well as pianist Keiko Matsui, who’s been on several of the tours, and vocalist Rebecca Jade, returning from last year’s tour.
“Honestly, when I look at that number on our stage that says 25th anniversary, it kind of feels odd to me,” says Koz, who was raised “a nice Jewish boy” in California’s San Fernando Valley but professes a love for the season in general. “I honestly don’t understand how we got a quarter century of doing this tour basically uninterrupted. Even in 2020, we didn’t tour but we did a livestream to bring Christmas to people. But 25 years? I never imagined.
“One of the reasons we’ve been able to do it so long is it’s never the same show. The whole idea is to build a show that has a certain amount of familiarity but also there’s new material, so people come back and feel the want to come back.”
And why is it that Christmas music plays so well for Koz?
“It’s nostalgia,” he explains. “It’s comfort food. There are multiple categories of Christmas songs, but the ones I’ll take on right now are the group of songs that were written basically in the times of the Great American Songbook by some of the greatest songwriters of all time -- Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, all those incredible songwriters that put so much into these pieces of music.
“So when you have something like ‘White Christmas,’ there’s so much meat on the bones of that song you can push it and pull it in so many different directions. It’s great material to play.”
But also tricky, acknowledges Koz, who began his solo career in 1989 after stints with Bobby Caldwell and Richard Marx and on “The Arsenio Hall Show.” “You have to walk a fine line. “You can’t change them too much so that you lose the emotion of the song for the person listening to it. It seems to me people want to hear them again year in, year out -- even the same melodies. Take Nat King Cole, ‘The Christmas Song;’ that’s been unchanged for how many years? But when it comes on, I turn it up. It’s the holidays. I want to hear Nat King Cole sing that song the same as always.”
Koz did get a chance to experiment on “Christmas Ballads,” however, with material that runs a gamut from familiar carols such as “Away in the manger,” “Silent Night,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” to the spiritual staple “Ave Maria” and a pairing of John Lennon songs, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over” and “Imagine,” featuring Jade.
“The original cast members and I got together in the summertime and did that,” Koz says of his eighth holiday release. “It’s taking a slice out of the more romantic side of Christmas, of holidays in general, 10 songs I’ve never recorded before. It was nice to get into some of these songs that aren’t necessarily a standard part of the holiday repertoire.”
Koz’s other major music milestone of the year was “Free Your Soul,” a track for Ringo Starr’s “EP 3.”
“Playing on a song for a Beatle -- or even just meeting a Beatle, I should say -- was a big highlight for me as a fan, as a person who’s loved their music since the day I heard it,” says Koz, who also launched a six-episode web series, “Just Be Koz,” about becoming a musician.
“I didn’t know what was gonna happen that day, but here I am in Ringo’s house and a half-hour later he pops in looking exactly like you would hope and expect. He said, ‘Let’s get to it.’ I started to play and he was standing right next to me while I was playing, clapping and singing along to what I was doing. He was enjoying himself so much that he said, ‘I just want you to blow the last minute and a half of the song, just take it.’
“We did a few takes, and as I’m playing I’m thinking, ‘This is never gonna make the record, a one-and-a-half minute sax solo at the end of the song. It’s a Ringo Starr record.’ Sure enough, it comes out and it’s all there. It’s one of the great musical experiences of my life.”
After he wraps the Christmas tour Koz will turn his attention back to a couple of other projects he has on tap, though neither has a release date. He’s three songs into a collection of Disney songs, including a “super cool, modern version” of “When You Wish Upon a Star” as well as “Reflection” from “Mulan” and “Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto,” with more to come.
“When you talk about Christmas music, Disney music has that same quality of incredible melodies,” Koz says, “very emotionally resonant pieces of music that people are gonna be hearing forever.”
His other endeavor of collaboration is with Barry Manilow, for whom Koz serves as a frequent opening act. In its “early stages,” he calls it “kind of a classical album, his idea for me. It’s a pretty amazing opportunity, ‘cause I’ve learned so much from him. Say what you want about Barry Manilow’s music, but everybody can agree that man is an entertainer, and he’s great at it. But he doesn’t get the credit he deserves as an incredible musician, producer, arranger, and conceptual artist. I’m just so lucky I get to work with him in those capacities.”
The Dave Koz & Friends 25th Anniversary Holiday Tour, featuring Peter White, Rick Braun, Keiko Matsui and Rebecca Jade, plays at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Connor Palace at Playhouse Square, 1501 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. 216-241-6000 or playhousesquare.org.

Dave Koz & Friends: 25th Anniversary Christmas Tour
Dave Koz and Friends announce the 25th anniversary edition of the longest-running jazz-based Christmas tour. Kicking off on November 25 (Black Friday) at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, the run will feature chart-topping, GRAMMY®-nominated saxophonist Dave Koz along with trumpeter Rick Braun and guitarist Peter White – artists that accompanied him on the road in the earliest years of the tour – as well as pianist Keiko Matsui and vocalist Rebecca Jade.
The annual tradition began as a simple six-city tour with David Benoit that coincided with the 1997 release of Koz’s first Christmas album – "December Makes Me Feel This Way". This year, they’ll be playing 23 cities. While each year of the tour has been unique, the quintet has lots of surprises in store for 2022. For starters, they’ll be giving songs from the forthcoming companion album Christmas Ballads (25th Anniversary Collection) their live debut.

Things To Do
Entertainment | dave koz & friends christmas turns 25, 5 things to know.
Twenty-five years ago saxophonist Dave Koz launched a Christmas tour with modest expectations. Now it’s become a holiday institution.
The Dave Koz & Friends show, coming to Detroit’s Music Hall Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7, has gone through all sorts of lineups over the years, and this year’s outing features Friends both old and new. Guitarist Peter White and trumpeter Rick Braun were part of the original holiday tour, while pianist Keiko Matsui is an old pal who’s been on the tour before and vocalist Rebecca Jade is out for her second consecutive year.
Jade, White and Braun also play on Koz’s latest album, “Christmas Ballads,” a 10-song set that runs a gamut from “Ave Maria” and “Greensleeves” to a pairing of John Lennon songs, “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” and “Imagine,” sung by Jade. Those will allow Koz and company to put a bit of freshness into this year’s festivities…
* Koz, 59, says by phone from tour rehearsals in Nashville that the 25-year mark for the holiday tour is gratifying, especially for “a nice Jewish boy” from Los Angeles who played with Bobby Caldwell, Richard Marx and on “The Arsenio Hall Show” before launching his solo career in 1989. “Honestly, when I look at that number on our stage that says 25th anniversary, it kind of feels odd to me. I honestly don’t understand how we got a quarter century of doing this tour basically uninterrupted. Even 2020, we didn’t tour but we did a livestream to bring Christmas to people. But 25 years? I never imagined…”
* With the anniversary in mind Koz wanted to nod to the tour’s past along with its present. “We have two original cast members back — Peter White, who usually does his own (holiday) tour and suspended it this year to come on arts, and Rick Braun came back this year. It’s just a really great mix of people, great mix of artistry, an ability to take these songs, even songs we’ve done so many times and look at them through a different lens with this group of artists and do something different. The whole idea is to build a show that has a certain amount of familiarity but also there’s no material so people come back and feel the want to come back.”
* The “Christmas Ballads” album was inspired by the 25th anniversary of the tour as well. “This year we wanted to celebrate with a new album. The original cast members and I got together in the summertime and did that. It’s taking a slice out of the more romantic side of Christmas, of holidays in general, 10 songs I’ve never recorded before. It was nice to get into some of these songs that aren’t necessarily a standard part of the holiday repertoire.
* During the year Koz also played saxophone on “Free Your Soul” from Ringo Starr’s “EP 3.” “Playing on a song for a Beatle — or even just meeting a Beatle, I should say — was a big highlight for me as a fan, as a person who’s loved their music since the day I heard it. I didn’t know what was gonna happen that day, but here I am in Ringo’s house and a half-hour later he pops in looking exactly like you would hope and expect. He said, ‘Let’s get to it.’ I started to play and he was standing right next to me while I was playing, clapping and singing along to what I was doing. He was enjoying himself so much he said, ‘I just want you to blow the last minute and a half of the song, just take it.’ We did a few takes, and as I’m plying I’m thinking, ‘This is never gonna make the record, a one and a half minute sax solo at the end of the song. It’s a Ringo Starr record.’ Sure enough it comes out and it’s all there. It’s one of the great musical experiences of my life.”
* Koz has a “couple of things I’m sort of working on” at the moment, with no release dates scheduled for them yet. One he describes as “a Disney project…Disney music has that same quality as (Christmas music) of incredible melodies, emotionally resonant pieces of music.” He’s currently three songs into that album, including a “super cool, modern version of “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Koz is also collaborating with Barry Manilow on “kind of a classical album,” which is in “it’s very beginning stages.”
The Dave Koz & Friends 25th Anniversary Holiday Tour, featuring Peter White, Rick Braun, Keiko Matsui and Rebecca Jade, plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Music Hall Center, 350 Madison Ave., Detroit. 313-887-8500.

Dave Koz (born March 27, 1963) is a Encino, California, U.S-based smooth jazz saxophonist who has become a staple of jazz and adult contemporary charts since his 1990 self-titled debut.
Born to a dermatologist father and pharmacist mother, Koz learned to play the saxophone from a young age, later playing in William Howard Taft High School’s jazz band. Despite subsequently graduating from UCLA with a degree in mass communications, the musician’s heart and soul were in music and Koz opted to pursue becoming a professional saxophone player. With very little time spared Koz was invited to join Bobby Caldwell’s touring band in the 1980s, after which the saxophonist would find himself touring with the likes of Jeff Lobber and Richard Marx. Following years of constant touring in which time Koz honed his live performance and improvisational skills, the musician played in the house band of the network TV show “The Pat Sajak Show”.
Following the show’s demise Koz opted to pursue a solo career and issued his debut, self-titled album in 1990. Released on Capitol Records, where Koz would remain for a string of albums, the record earned positive reviews and charted at No. 129 on the Billboard 200. The saxophonist’s second release on Capitol was the popular full-length “Lucky Man”, which peaked at No. 2 on the contemporary Jazz Chart aided by the No. 20 single adult contemporary single “You Make Me Smile”. Featuring Koz’s brother Jeff Koz on a number of the album’s tracks, the record went on to sell over half a million copies and introduced the musician to a much wider audience.
The full-length “Off the Beaten Path” followed in 1996 as did Koz’s debut live album “Live in Trinidad”. The following year Koz issued his first holiday album “December Makes Me Feel This Way” featuring a host of well-known christmas numbers and his brother on nylon guitar. In 2001 the saxophonist recorded his second christmas album “A Smooth Jazz Christmas” which peaked at No. 3 on the Contemporary Jazz Chart.
Following the release of his subsequent studio album “”At the Movies” Koz parted ways with EMI and signed with Concord who issued his 10th full-length album “Hello Tomorrow” in 2010. Three years later Koz would enjoy his greatest mainstream chart success with the collaborative album “Dave Koz & Friends - Summer Horns” alongside Gerald Albright, Mindi Abair, and Richard Elliott. The record was subsequently nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards and followed by the 2014 Christmas album, “The 25th of December”.
Live reviews
Some people have an unteachable natural charisma when stepping out onto a stage and American musician Dave Koz is one of these. The smooth jazz artist may now be in his 50s yet he moves around the stage with the energy and vigour of somebody half his age. A trusty saxophone in hand, he manages to captivate and entertain the crowds despite not speaking a word between long instrumental breakdowns.
It is the natural charm that he oozes between the performances that has the crowd so firmly onside as he thanks them sincerely for the support and for coming out this evening. He has shared stages with huge icons over the years yet he seems most contented with his hand selected accompanying musicians tonight as they jam through the likes of 'Starting Over Again' and 'Life in The Fast Lane'. His summer horns series has been called a roaring success and there is no doubt he will soon be recreating the magic at jazz festivals all over the globe so keep your eyes peeled for this talented instrumentalist.

Dave Koz and friends were PHENOMENAL! My first time seeing Dave Koz perform, blew my mind! Candy , Jonathan and Bill were Outstanding! We had church, celebrated Hanukkah, Christmas and most of All heard some GREAT JAZZ , played by Genius! The band was AWESOME as well!
Dave Koz went and did it again! The Summer Horns concert may have been a repeat of last summer but you would not know it. The fresh new songs combined with some of Dave's solos (which I always look forward to hearing) - they really made for a fantastic concert!
Simply the best! A showman who engages those playing with him. I He is my favorite saxophonist ! I actually met him tonight at a club and he was friendly and engaging- he even asked me my name! I WILL attend one of his concerts this year!

Welcome to visit moscow tours.
We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad. We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.
Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.
Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.
Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.
Moscow is a big and busy megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.
Saint Petersburg is our second capital, the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens. In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!
If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”. It is definitely worth visiting!
Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again. Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.
Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.
We look forward to meeting you soon!

A C T O N E SCENE 1
Dr Silbergaus hosts a Christmas Eve party for his daughter Clara. The guest of honour is Clara’s Godfather Drosselmeyer, arriving with gifts for the young girl, including a book entitled The Nutcracker & the Mouse King. Clara becomes enthralled with the book as other guests arrive and admire the Christmas tree. Drosselmeyer appears as Santa Clause, with toys for the children and carnival masks for the adults. Later, he surprises everyone by appearing as a magician. He orders mechanical toys to be brought into the room. At the wave of his wand, three puppets appear – a Nutcracker, a Doll, and a Mouse King.
The Nutcracker starts dancing declaring he can gain victory over everyone. Everybody joins in the dancing, except Clara who watches the Mouse King come to life and challenge the Nutcracker for the right to dance with the Doll. The Nutcracker and Mouse King are soon fighting, and Clara realises this is just what she read in her book. The Doll throws a slipper at the fighting pair, who stop just as Drosselmeyer re-appears. The guests congratulate him on a wonderful show. Clara’s brother Fritz challenges the Nutcracker to a duel. In the ensuing fight, the Nutcracker is wounded. Fritz is punished, and the toys are covered up. Clara is comforted by her Godfather, who tells her that she will see more later that night.
The guests depart, thanking the host Dr. Silbergaus. Clara sits in her darkened room with the damaged Nutcracker. She wonders what her Godfather had meant ….what surprises will be in store for her. Soon she is awakened by a strange rattling noise. “Mice,” thinks Clara. But these are not ordinary mice they are dressed to celebrate Christmas. She tries to escape when the clock strikes midnight, the mice are still and Clara sees her Godfather sitting on top of the clock. When she begs him for help Drosselmeyer takes her in his arms.
As the Christmas tree begins to grow, the Nutcracker comes back to life. He leaps to his feet and calls upon his friends to help fight the mice. An army of toy soldiers appear. At the height of the battle, Clara hurls her slipper it at the Mouse King who is knocked down. Clara faints. As darkness returns, Drosselmeyer covers Clara and the Nutcracker with a shawl. Minutes later, Clara reawakens to find she has become a beautiful Princess and as her Godfather lifts the shawl, she sees the Nutcracker has turned into a handsome Prince. She is overcome with joy and hugs her Godfather as the Prince beckons her to follow him.

As Clara sleeps, Drosselmeyer appears and transforms the room into a pine forest. It starts to snow and Clara awakens and stares in amazement at the magical sight.
A C T T W O
Drosselmeyer appears and completes the transformation – flowers appear everywhere.
Clara arrives with the Nutcracker Prince. She is overjoyed but fails to notice that Drosselmeyer has transformed himself into a young man. The Flower Fairy appears and hears the Nutcracker boast about his defeat of the Mouse King. Drosselmeyer is upset by this and once again conjures up the Mouse King. The fight resumes and the Nutcracker faces defeat. Clara begs her Godfather to help and with a final wave of his wand a crown of flowers appears on the Mouse King’s head! The Nutcracker thanks Drosselmeyer for his help and they both ask Clara to dance. Amazed to see how similar they now look, Clara chooses to dance with the Nutcracker. Her Godfather feels rejected and turns himself back into the Magician. Dawn breaks and as the Kingdom of the Flowers fades, Clara finds herself back in the family living room. She rushes to uncover the Nutcracker but under the clock she finds only a basket of flowers.
