Bus Tours Leaving From Evansville, IN

One of the benefits of living in Evansville, Ind., is location. Evansville is three hours from Indianapolis, three hours from St. Louis, less than three hours from Nashville and only an hour-and-a-half from Louisville. Being surrounded by so many larger cities, as well as several smaller communities, Evansville residents are able to opt for day trips or weekend road trips. Because of Evansville’s locale, and its proximity to so many states, several companies offer bus tours out of Evansville.

13 Day Trips From Evansville, IN (Within 2 Hours)

  • Post Author: Julie
  • Post published: June 3, 2022

Summer is here, so you already know my summer activity gears have been turning.  What should we spend our summer doing?  I have road trips on the brain, so I thought it would be cool to share my brainstorming with you.  Each of these day trips from Evansville are within a 2-hour drive because sometimes getting away for an entire weekend isn’t always possible (or desireable).

I’ve been to half of these destinations before and they are each definitely worth  mentioning because I would go back in a heartbeat.  The rest are on my “I really hope we can find time to do this” list for the summer.

Here we go, let me know what you think in the comments!!

Day Trips From Evansville

13 Day Trips From Evansville

(within 2 hours), 1. holiday world & splashin' safari.

1 hour from Evansville

Holiday World tops our summer bucket list each and every year. Holiday World has amazing rides, wonderful amenities (free sunscreen, free parking, free unlimited soft drinks, allows you to bring your own food/snacks, etc), and the park itself is super-duper clean.

Check out my tips for visiting Holiday World here .

2. Audubon State Park

10 minutes from Evansville

Audubon State Park is one of our favorite local places to hike.  A quick jump over the bridge from Evansville and you are there.  They offer several different trails to choose from.  We usually bring our dog Penny along and hike the pet-friendly trail.  There is a public restroom located in the main parking area, which is super handy (not a fan of the forest squat).  They also have covered picnic areas available for rent.  Audubon State Park is a great place to spend an afternoon with the family.

Plan your visit to Audubon State Park here .

3. Ellis Park

9 minutes from Evansville

Grab the family and catch a horse race.  Probably not someplace you want to go every weekend, but definitely worth at least one visit a summer just for the experience.

Also, one day each summer they have their Weiner Dog Races where local dachshunds race each other down the track.  All proceeds to go local animal shelters.  Super cute, super fun!

Plan your visit to Ellis Park here .

4. Marengo Caves

1 hour 30 minutes from Evansville

Marengo Caves is about a 90-minute drive from Evansville.  Once you arrive you wind your way through the park, driving past all sorts of campsite areas and cabins.  Once you reach the caves you have 2 options for walking tours.  One tour is 40 minutes, and the other is 90 minutes.  You can choose to do one or both during your visit.  They also have other fun stuff to do, such as a mega maze, pedal cars, and more.  Check out their website here to see all they have to offer!

Plan your visit to Marengo Caves here .

5. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial

I haven’t been to Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial Park since I was in elementary school on a field trip (and I think possibly during a Girl Scout outing?).  However, since its only an hour away from Evansville, it’s a good place to check out on a family daytrip outing!

There is a Visitor Center with maps, guides, and information about the park, a living historical farm to see first-hand how daily life was in the 1820s, and a few trails to choose from.  After you can head over to the Lincoln Amphitheatre and see who is performing!

Plan your visit to Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial here .

6. Louisville Zoo

2 hours from Evansville

The Louisville Zoo is pushing the 2-hour drive time limit of this post, but it is definitely worth mentioning.  It’s a wonderful zoo with lots of beautiful exhibits.  There is even a water park for the kids smack dab in the middle of the zoo, so pack your swimsuit and towel too!

I definitely recommend loading up a wagon/stroller with a small cooler full of snacks & drinks because outside food and drink is allowed in this zoo.

Plan your visit to the Louisville Zoo here .

7. Louisville Mega Caverns

An easy drive just inside Louisville is the Louisville Mega Caverns.  Ziplining through a cave! Grant and I visited several years ago and it was a lot of fun!

We are waiting until both of our kids are old enough to do everything they have to offer because you do have to be 7 years old at and least 55lbs to do the Mega Zips and/or the Walking Tour.  However, there isn’t an age restriction on the Mega Tram.

Plan your visit to Louisville Mega Caverns here .

8. Holiday Drive-In Theatre

35 minutes from Evansville

I don’t know if you can consider the Holiday Drive-In Theatre in Reo a “day-trip” since you go there in the evening, but I’m counting it anyway.  Pack your snacks, your blankets, your bug spray, lawn chairs, drinks, and hit the road!  It’s about a 45-minute drive to the Holiday Drive-In Theatre, which isn’t too bad.  I suggest arriving at least 30 minutes early, if not more, to get yourself settled into your parking spot.  I also highly recommend bringing an additional speaker to make hearing easier.  I have found that solely relying on the vehicle speakers makes it difficult to hear sometimes.

You pay 1 entry fee but can stay for 2 movies if you want.

Plan your visit to Holiday Drive-In here .

9. New Harmony

30 minutes from Evansville

New Harmony is a small historic town with lots of things to do and see.  Rent a golf cart for the day and tour this cute little town.  See the Labyrinths, the Tree of 40 Fruits, the Roofless Church and Playtopia.

Plan your visit to New Harmony here .

10. Wilstem Wildlife Park

1 hour 45 minutes from Evansville

Wilstem Wildlife Park has been on my list FOREVER!! I am hoping we will find time to check this place off of our bucket list over the summer.

Plan your visit to Wilstem Wildlife Park here .

11. Big Splash Adventure Park

Big Splash Adventure is an indoor waterpark in French Lick, IN.  They have day passes available, but they also have lodging for anyone who wishes to stay longer!

Check out a few tips for visiting Big Splash here .

12. Shawnee National Forest

I’ve never been here, but Grant has.  A great place for spending a day in nature, hiking, walking in streams, etc.  However, DO NOT FORGET BUG SPRAY!  Last time Grant went he came home with  at least a million chigger/mosquito bites and was miserable from the itchies for the next 2 weeks!

Plan your visit to Shawnee National Forest here .

13. Indiana Caverns

1 hour 40 minutes from Evansville

Indiana Caverns has cave walking tours, escape rooms, a single rail zip coaster, and more.  There are age, weight, and height restrictions on the different activities, so be sure to check that out before you go.  I think my family will wait until my daughter (who is 5 now) is at least 7 so that all 4 of us can participate in the walking cave tour, the escape room, and possibly the zip rail (depending on weight).

Plan your trip to Indiana Caverns here .

WantTo Drive Farther?

Last summer we went on two different weekend getaways.  One to St. Louis, MO, and one to Horse Cave, KY. Both trips were so much fun and only about a 3-hour drive from Evansville.

So, if you are feeling a little saucy and want to make a 3 hour trip, consider St. Louis, MO and Horse Cave, KY.  Read about our trips here:

Our St. Louis Trip

Our Horse Cave Trip

Also, before you hit the road, be sure to print out a Travel Bingo printable to give you and your kids something fun to do during the drive!

Evansville: where history meets modernity.  From its early days as a thriving commercial town with river trade, to the manufacturing powerhouse that supported the efforts of WWII, Evansville has always been a major center of industry.  And it’s through that pioneering spirit that the city continues to evolve.

Whether you’re looking to explore the shops in vibrant downtown, enjoy a game at historic Bosse Field, or visit our land-based casino resort, Evansville can offer it all.  The Evansville Region is made up of four counties, each with their own charm and attractions.

Evansville is known for its deep-rooted history and beautiful location on the bend of the Ohio River in Southwest Indiana.  Attend a jazz show at the Reitz Home Museum or enjoy a beer at Myriad Brewing Company located in the renovated McCurdy Building.  Take a riverside stroll on the Greenway or step into the past on the last seaworthy WWII-era landing tank ship, the LST325.

As the third largest city in Indiana, the “River City,” as it’s often called, is rich with activities and easy to get to.  Located within three hours of four major metropolitan areas (Indianapolis, Louisville, Nashville and St. Louis), the Evansville Region is well positioned to welcome visitors from any direction and is inevitably on the way to your next destination.

Since then, our buses and paratransit vans have transported more than 45 million passengers.

Operations (Fixed Route):

Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) provides transportation for the public on 22 fixed route service areas; informs the public of existing routes, as well as new or improved service; coordinates and plan routes and schedules; keeps a constant check on the effectiveness of service; implements and controls all managerial functions involved with the METS transit operation.

Operations (METS Mobility):

Provides paratransit service for persons 65 years or older or those with a documentable disability that limits their use of the METS regular route system (not for emergency use or ambulance service.) Trip reservations must be made by 4:00 pm the day prior. Drivers assist passengers with parcels and/or grocery bags. Operates in the corporate limits of the City, and a 3/4 mile wide corridor along either side of regular bus routes that extend beyond the City limits.

Maintenance

Implements preventative maintenance programs; provides complete mechanical failure restoration; repairs and refurbishes vehicles when applicable; reduces operation expenses and increase fleet productivity by monitoring equipment; records and maintains a viable inventory of parts to provide prompt and accurate maintenance of the fleet.

Evansville World War II veteran turns 100-years-old

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - An Evansville area World War II veteran is turning 100 years old after a long lifetime of serving his county and his community.

Virgil Messel says he served in the U.S. Army in Japan during World War II. After his service, Messel drove an EVSC school bus for about 50 years.

Messel’s family estimates he drove four generations of students safely to school over the years.

A vintage car enthusiast and a proud patriot, Messel says the secret to having a long happy life like his isn’t so hard to replicate.

“I like to keep busy,” said Messel. “I didn’t sit around and do nothing. Maybe that’s the secret to growing old, staying busy and keeping your mind clear.”

Messel celebrated triple digits with steak at Logan’s Road House. He was joined by dozens of family members and friends from the VFW and his automobile club.

Howey: The tao of Willie in today’s polarized America

bus tours from evansville in

In the nascent days of his administration, Gov. Eric Holcomb found himself confronted with Willie Nelson’s huge Prevost tour bus — the Honeysuckle Rose — in Evansville. Calls were made, and in short order the governor’s boot heels were ambling up the RV steps.

According to sources close to the governor, Holcomb’s appearance set off the kind of housekeeping that would ensue when an R.A. shows up at a dorm kegger. Willie's love of weed is widely known.

After chatting for 20 minutes or so, Holcomb tweeted out a photo of himself and the star, saying, "Amazing who you'll meet when you're on the road again. Thanks, @willienelson for taking a couple of minutes to meet this lifelong fan."

This column isn't about cannabis reform (Holcomb has consistently said he will enforce federal cannabis laws until the FDA reschedules it, making Indiana a veritable reefer island), nor is it about the 50 Indiana National Guard troops the governor has committed to send to the southern border some 400 miles southwest of Willie's Luck, Texas, hideaway.

I caught his concert at the local amphitheater in Key West, and in talking with fellow fans, it became clear that in today's deeply political polarization in America, Willie Nelson is one of the few figures who transcend the right and the left.

The 90-year-old is in a class by himself, having written more than 2,500 songs, recording over 250 albums and appearing before more than 3 million fans at live venues. Rocker Neil Young appeared with Nelson at Farm Aid in Noblesville last fall. "This is the man who started the whole thing," Young said of the phone call he received from Nelson when Farm Aid was held in Indianapolis in the ‘80s.

Nelson said at a pre-Farm Aid presser last fall: "It’s a minor miracle all of us are all together again after 36 years. Thank you, farmers, for taking care of us, giving us good food to eat. Where I grew up in Abbott, Texas, I grew up on a farm. I picked cotton; I baled hay. I did all that stuff and I know how hard it is, but I know how good it is when you do it right."

So in these days of deep political polarization, why is Willie Nelson at the social fulcrum? In his 2006 book, "The Tao of Willie: A Guide to the Happiness in Your Heart," Nelson describes his suicidal days in Nashville when his hog farm went pork-belly up, his house burned down and he returned to his native Texas and rejoined the Austin music scene at the Armadillo World Headquarters.

“The Armadillo was nothing fancy,” he writes, “but the beer was cold and the jalapeños on the nachos were hot, and the audiences — who were a wild mix of cowboys and hippies — liked all kinds of music.”

This mutual compatibility with the right and left is worth exploring at this juncture as America heads into a jarring presidential race with democracy literally in the crosshairs. What is the Tao of Willie? I'll let him explain:

“As far as different religions are concerned, to me they’re just different paths leading to the same place. A thousand paths to a single destination.”

There’s his adherence to the Golden Rule: “[I]f every person, every business, and every government simply followed the Golden Rule in all their decisions, everything else would just fall into place.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

On our security: "As nations, we prepare much more for war than we do for peace, and in doing so, we make war inevitable. Achieving peace through strength doesn’t necessarily mean you need bigger tanks or missiles, for peace can also be achieved through personal strength. …

"No matter what you do, be truthful. …

"You’ll never get ahead by blaming your problems on others. …

"If you forgive your enemies, it messes up their heads. …

"Keep skunks of all kinds at a distance. …

"Life is not about how fast you run or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.”

In the Tao of Willie, life is about playing music with his family and friends, and at each concert, he seeks out a friendly face, a surefire avenue to connect with his audiences. But Willie Nelson has limits to his friendship:

"If you throw trash along the highways or foul our rivers, I’m sorry to say you are not my friend." (This assessment would certainly get the Holcomb stamp of approval as he has been obsessed with litter remediation along Hoosier interstates and highways.)

"If you think that people whose skin is a different color from yours are beneath you, then you, particularly, are not my friend. …

"If you mistreat those who are smaller and weaker than you, you are not my friend."

Yes, these are relevant guideposts for public servants, politicians and voters.

I watched 90-year-old Willie Nelson do a two-hour show, playing longtime favorites "Still Is Still Moving to Me" and "Angels Flying Too Close to the Ground" and, of course, "On the Road Again.” He didn't banter between songs, but his voice was durable, strong and forever Willie.

After the show, my friends and I ended up at the Green Parrot for a couple of rounds, and as we Ubered home, we joined the procession of Prevost tour buses. Here was Willie Nelson at Mile Marker 0 at the U.S. 1 proverbial "end of the road," heading back north across the Keys and back into the American mainstream.
