You will experience the best Portland sites including the International Rose Garden (seasonally), the World Forestry Museum (seasonally), the Oregon Society of Artists (seasonally), Pioneer Courthouse Square, NW 23rd (the best shopping area in Portland), the Pearl District, the South Park Blocks, and Lan Su Chinese Garden. Today Portland is known as one of the worlds most environmentally conscious cities: a hub for farm-to-table eateries, alternative lifestyles, a large community of cyclists, and high walkability. Let our informative and entertaining Tour Guides show you the best the City of Portland has to offer.

Know More about this tour

Pioneer Courthouse Square, located in the heart of Downtown Portland , is a public space hosting more than 300 programmed events each year. With more than 26,000 people visiting the Square each day, it is the single most visited site in the city. The Square’s features include the Waterfall Fountain, built of granite; sixteen columns with classical pillars topped with carved yellow roses on which crawl pink-and-green spotted bugs; and two brick amphitheaters which provide seats for events. One of the city’s signature landmarks, located in beautiful Washington Park, Portland’s largest official rose garden is home to more than 10,000 roses including 650+ rose varieties. From May through October, you can stroll amongst the lovely blooms, breathe in the delightful smells, and enjoy the spectacular views of downtown and Mount Hood. Loading docks and cobblestone streets hint at this former warehouse district’s past, while stylish bars and gleaming lofts point toward the future. The Pearl District was formerly occupied by warehouses, light industry, and railroad classification yards and now noted for its art galleries, restaurants, upscale businesses, and high-rise residences along with lofts that were converted from warehouses. The neighborhood surrounding stylish Northwest 23rd Avenue offers an abundance of terrific shopping and choice eats. In the Northwest neighborhood (also known as Nob Hill or the Alphabet District), century-old Victorian and Craftsman-style storefronts housing unique boutiques stand alongside national retailers, interspersed with coffee shops and on-trend restaurants and bars. In short, it’s a shopper’s paradise. You can explore forests around the world through two floors of unique hands-on exhibits. Suitable for all ages, the Discovery Museum’s colorful and thoughtful exhibits include information about tree planting, wildlife, the benefits of wood, outdoor recreation, and forest careers. The first floor focuses on the many roles that forests play in our lives. View the forest as a habitat, a place for recreation and reflection, a critical resource, and more. Much of the second floor takes a global perspective, exploring how people around the world are connected to and dependent on their local forests. We will visit the World Forestry Center from mid-October through the end of April on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This hidden gem promotes visual arts in the diverse communities of our region, with educational opportunities for artists at all levels of accomplishment. While here, we will visit the OSA Gallery which changes exhibits every month, learn about the amazing history of the OSA (which started in 1926), and view rarely seen works of art by master painters who are part of the amazing history of this important part of the Portland Community. We will visit the OSA from mid-October through the end of April on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Powell’s City of Books is the largest used and new bookstore in the world, occupying an entire city block and housing approximately one million books. Located in downtown Portland’s Pearl District, the City of Books has nine color-coded rooms and over 3,500 different sections, offering something for every interest, including an incredible selection of out-of-print and hard-to-find titles. Built by the Multnomah Athletic Club in 1926 and acquired by the City in 1966, Providence Park Stadium is known today as home to the Portland Thorns and Portland Timbers. This historic stadium hosts about 150 events per year, including professional sports games, concerts, youth camps and business events. This 12-block greenspace stretches north from the campus of Portland State University, serving as a front yard for residents and businesses of the Cultural District. The park hosts vibrant community events and programs for Portlanders and regional visitors throughout the year. Once a bustling highway, this riverside gem offers more than 36 acres (15 ha) of strollable, bikeable and dog-walkable public park with historical and cultural monuments aplenty.

Traveler Reviews

Friendly Phil our tour guide gave a good account of local history. Pick up time was accurate. It felt a bit rushed, but then there is a lot to cover.

Knowledgeable tour guide! Beautiful scenic drive to the waterfalls. Carrie is so sweet and super friendly. Thank you for keeping us safe on our trip.

Jeff was a fun guide and showed us some new things around Portland. He did an excellent job dealing with some unexpected detours and still got us to where we needed to go. Would love to have spent more time at the rose garden. The views are incredible.

We had a delightful ride through the city with a few stops at some interesting spots. The rose garden in Washington park was beautiful and the surrounding neighborhood with its view was spectacular.

The tour guide, Keira, who had guided my coastal tour two days earlier, was good and informative. However, only two stops were made— to the Rose Garden and the Lan Su Chinese Garden. The itinerary listed 4 stops, so I don’t understand why. I could have easily taken public transportation to the Washington Park myself and seen much more !

Jeff was very personable, friendly and courteous. Some of the stops for photo ops really didn’t mean anything to me ( Heathman Hotel, schnitzer theater for example). The Rose garden was very impressive and the Chinese garden was lovely ( and something I wouldn’t have thought to go see). I would have liked it even better if Jeff had been more knowledgeable about some things we passed by that weren’t part of the tour, but I would like to have k own more about.

The views were amazing and the driver was very informative! I’d suggest this trip to anyone who hasn’t ever been in Portland.

The tour was great! The guide was very knowledgeable! Best parts of the tour were all the history given about Portland while driving through all the different districts. The bottled water was nice too.

It was a great way to know the city of Portland. I enjoyed going into the residential areas of the city as well as going into the Rose Garden and the Chinese Garden.

If it’s your first time visiting Portland (or even if it’s not) I highly recommend the city tour! Having never visited the area before, the city tour was very informative and fun! Phil was the tour guide and he knows so much about the city both from the past as well as current events. We lucked out as the weather was absolutely beautiful and completely sunny! I appreciated the safety and convenience of the tour as well as I was traveling solo - the guide picks you up right outside of your hotel and drives around areas of the city and makes stops at certain spots so the group can get out and explore a bit. Truly a great way to see the awesome city of Portland!

Portland, Oregon city tour: Parks, plazas and views

9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. departure (2 p.m. Oct – March), 3 hours, $65

We’ll pick you up in central downtown Portland at  Director Park in one of our roomy vans. We’ll then drive up Portland’s north/south dividing line, pointing out important sites — we’ll pass Powell’s Books, and tell the story behind the biggest independent book store in the world, as well as some of the city’s bike art, and historical buildings. Once we reach the summit of King’s Heights, we’ll walk around the grounds of the mansion built by a newspaper baron to the view that was once available only to the city’s elite. It’s one of the best places to develop the context by which to experience this city.

We’ll walk through the mansion’s grounds and back to the van, where we will drive into the SW Portland neighborhood of Arlington Heights, on the edge of Washington Park. Here we’ll take a walk through our favorite secret garden, and into the International Rose Test Garden, introducing you to the story of the rose city. After photos and (in season) inhaling the scent of the roses, we’ll get into the van for our next stop. (When roses aren’t in season, we may make an alternative stop at the Hoyt Arboretum.)

From here, we’ll head back into the city center, driving through what Portland calls the cultural district — once the literal heart of the city, the center line along which once the merchants and lumber barons lived, and now institutions like the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Historical Society and Portland State University dominate. It wouldn’t be Portland without a stop for doughnuts, so we’ll discuss the history of the city’s foundation and the design of these blocks after we duck into one of our favorite shops and grab a treat.

After this, it’s a drive along Portland’s South Waterfront and the waterfront park, telling the story of the shining Swiss Alps-style engineering of the Aerial Tram and the development of this brand-new neighborhood and its beautiful, one-of-a-kind Tilikum Crossing bridge. Time and interest allowing, we’ll jaunt across one of the oldest bridges in the city to the inner Eastside neighborhood of Ladd’s Addition, a jewel box of sorts where we can recommend some of the best coffee, food carts, restaurants and breweries the city of foodies has to offer for your later enjoyment.

Our late afternoon departure during the late spring and summer months may highlight a tea or ice cream stop if participants so choose.

  • B7066BTmichaelm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful way to view the city My fiancé and I had a wonderful bike ride with Kelly. She was so incredibly knowledgeable about the city layout, its architecture, culture, history, and current “claims to fame”. While this was more my finance’s ask, throughout the entire trip I was incredibly glad we had gone through with it. By the end of the trip, we had some great recommendations for city activities and places/restaurants to check out. I think what made the trip particularly special was that Kelly provided a view into a different lifestyle as well, as someone who doesn’t own a vehicle. Overall her enthusiasm was contagious and we left the tour feeling like we knew the city inside and out - as much you can over a short time frame. Thanks again for a memorable visit! • pixieting 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles What an amazing experience! It was a rainy and cooler day, but that didn’t stop Kelly from giving us one of the best experiences we had in Portland! There were just 4 of us on the tour. Kelly offered gloved to those who didn't have them, as we were biking in 40 degree weather. She said she constantly scouts out routes for the tours and made sure, with is being a bit out of shape that she kept an eye on when my husband had to stop going uphill (she said they do have one ebike if its really needed). The route she took us on was through a beautiful section of town where the slight uphill was first on the tour. After a certain point, everything was wither downhill or flat on the tour. We stopped off at 3 different "pods" (parking lots with food trucks). Kelly had us get drinks at the first one and we had a delicious cannoli. There was a tent with heaters in it to warm up a bit. Second place we stopped at was a newer pod of trucks with a beautiful permanent structure that we went into as Kelly got plentiful amounts of food for us to try. The last place we went to was an old Asylum that had been changed to house the food trucks. There we had an amazing waffle. Kelly was extremely knowledgeable and kind. Overall we would highly recommend this tour!! Read more Written March 8, 2024
