Free Budapest Walking Tours

free walking tour budapest tours

This post lists the best free walking tours you can take in Budapest, Hungary, the beautiful city once the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

We also include free walks with bus tour tickets, self-guided tours, and small group tours.

We are a group of local walking tour guides who lead daily walking tours throughout Budapest.

And, in the video below, Zsuzsi from Budapest Personal Guide takes you on a virtual walk of the streets of Pest, one-half of Budapest.

These walking tours are called 'free tours' but are commonly understood to run on a name-your-own-price model or what's called a 'tips-only-basis'.

There are no fixed prices to take a tour.

Below is a calendar of some of the great free walking tours available in Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube.

Click on the entry below to expand the listing for more details. READ OUR GROUP POLICY  (bookings more than 4 people)

The tours listed below are run through us.

Searching Availability...

More tours are available in the Google calendar below .

Many people are drawn to these Budapest free tours because they are convenient, affordable, and entertaining. Their popularity, however, also means that group sizes can get quite large.

  • City Centre
  • Buda Castle
  • WW2/History

How Much Do You Tip for a Free Walking Tour Budapest?

After taking the tour, you get to decide how much you thought it was worth or what you could afford, even nothing.

Technically speaking, these aren't tips to the guide. You are simply paying for the tour what you wish.

According to reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, past participants seem to leave between €5 - €20 per adult.

And while free walking tours are generally limited to a city centre, in Budapest there are free themed tours, such as those focused on communism or the city's Jewish Quarter.

If you want to ensure a smaller group setting to give you more time to interact with your tour guide, we suggest checking out paid small-group tours .

Alternatively, you could try one of the available self-guided tours, which are completely free.

CITY CENTRE WALKING TOURS IN BUDAPEST

There are a few companies offering tours of the city center of Budapest that operate on the name-your-own-price system.

This guided walking tour is available daily at 11am and it lasts 2 hours.

View the calendar above . Reservations are required .

BUDA CASTLE WALKING TOURS

In addition to tours of the city centre, there are also companies offering free or pay-what-you-wish walking tours around Buda Castle.

If you want to learn more about the castle, these are great and affordable opportunities you won't want to miss.

In addition to her city centre tour, Klaudia also offers a daily tour of the Buda Castle district which includes stops at the Royal Palace and Fisherman's Bastion.

This tour starts daily at 3:00pm and lasts for 2 hours.

WW2 HISTORY TOURS

If you're hoping to learn more about what happened in Budapest during WW2, these tours provide a lot of useful details and point out important historical locations that you might otherwise miss.

Visitors can expect to see and learn about the following sites and subjects:

  • Rumbach Synagogue

You can take this pay-what-you-wish walking tour daily at 11 am and on Sundays at 15:00 (3 pm).

Tour runs for around 2 hours 30 minutes and it starts from Budapest Madch Imre tr 2 1075 Hungary .

Book this WW2 tour or learn more .

free walking tour budapest tours

While on a street art tour, you can expect to visit some of the following locations:

  • Szimpla Kert Bar
  • Famous Abandoned Buildings

If you're interested in taking a look at some of the lesser-known areas of Budapest, consider taking one of the pay-what-you-wish walking tours listed below.

The tour availability is variable and you should check the availability calendar before heading for the tour.

Tour starts at 11 am and runs for around 2 hours.

Meeting point of the tour is Budapest, Szent István Bazilika, Szent István tér 1, 1051 Hungary .

You will find you guide by the Entrance of the building with LIGHT BLUE UMBRELLA.

Book this street art tour or learn more .

SELF-GUIDED TOURS

It’s easy to customize your own experience and be in charge of your explorations through Budapest with a self-guided or audio tour.

Start when you want, and take as much or little time as you can - it’s up to you.

Budapest by Locals

If you’re interested in listening to a guide - but have the ability to pause and investigate some stops further - this audio tour is a good way to go.

Self-Guided Haunted City Game

This is an interesting alternative to the traditional walking tour, as it allows you to explore the city in search of clues to solve a puzzle while you learn about the haunted history of Budapest.

Although it's not technically a tour and it isn't free to take, this self-guided city exploration game is only €8, which is about what most people would tip their guide for a pay-what-you-wish walking tour.

The game lasts for 2 hours and meeting point is Budapest, City Park, 1146 Hungary

It wasn’t actually just for fun, it is still part of the tour, we just really have a great guide. Robert is an amazing guide. It was cool and fun. High five to my bro Robert our amazing guide. He’s the star of this tour. Brilliant mind that master all the backstories of each places. Just amazing. Budapest is great, glad i experienced it.

free walking tour budapest tours

The simplicity of this tour are not obvious to the extravagant spots we visited which is unlikely good. It’s not intimating in a way that all the members of the tour group get along and same the right amount of fun and excitement. We especially like our guide who is amazing in sharing all the information and manages to add some amazing trivia.

It was a worthy tour experience and we definitely recommend Budapest tours to whoever wants to travel and discover Berlin. It’s a magical place and we would love to go back someday. 🙂

free walking tour budapest tours

Thanks to this tour I was able to wander many parts of Budapest with a lot of information and fun stories from Robert our guide. He’s a great tour guide! He made our Budapest In a day even special and memorable. Aside from photos we have on this tour, knowledge to keep. Experience wise and fun bonding with other tourist who are very friendly, and approachable and welcoming locals. Local products like food and other souvenirs are nice too. Great memories to keep in great places in Budapest. Nothing could ask for. Thanks, Budapest tour! I definitely recommend your tour! 🙂

George was a fantastic tour guide!

He took us right through the heart of central Budapest and really brought the past to life, through his broad understanding of history, politics and culture. I definitely felt like it was a worthwhile 2 hours, and feel I now have a much better understanding of how and where Budapest (and Hungary in general) overall fit into the larger history within which the city and people have been (and are) placed.

He was also very personable and funny, and was patient in answering all of our questions, as well as recommending some great places to sample some authentic Hungarian cuisine. We already went to one place and it was fantastic! Can’t wait to try out his other suggestions.

Would highly recommend!

An all in one tour in the center of Budapest is a great decision. We get to see a lot of beautiful places in the city, it’s amazing! Robert also shared a lot of informations about the places so it’s absolutely worth it! Going to recommend it to my friends, they’re planning to visit the country soon too. Glad I made it first. Hahahah

“ Really liked the tour and the information we got; interesting and sometimes even surprising! The atmosphere was nice and it felt personal, because of the interaction and interest of the guide in the participants. I would recommend the tour “

“ George was very enthusiastic and polite. He loved interacting with people and knew the city inside out. We extended the tour by half an hr and covered much more than expected. He was so kind to walk us through all the ruin bars and knew so much about each one of them. He even shared his personal stories which was delightful. I highly recommend him to someone who really wants to know the Jewish culture, history, and their role in shaping Hungary. Absolutely loved the tour!

“ George was such a fabulous tour guide! He was so kind in wanting to get to know each and every person on the tour so that he could tailor it to our preferences. It was an extremely hot day but George took extra care to make sure any stops were in the shade with somewhere to sit. He was incredibly knowledgeable with an extremely large English vocabulary. We were very impressed with his tour and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a more detailed look into the history of Budapest, especially it’s Jewish Quarter. “

“George is lovely, knowledgeable & approachable, whose passion for his home town is evident. I went on this tour after being in town a few hours. George gave hints & tips for tourists followed by a tour which showed off the sights and the historical knowledge of this amazing city. Finishing with what to do next and recommendations 🙂 Thanks George”

FAQ about Budapest

What is the best time to visit budapest.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather, while the summer can be hot and crowded. December offers festive Christmas markets.

Is Budapest safe?

This is one of the questions about Budapest that is asked very often. Yes, Budapest is a very safe city, especially in districts 5, 6, and 7, where tourists mostly congregate. Crime rates are generally very low, but you should be cautious and apply common sense, like you should everywhere.

How long should I stay in Budapest?

Budapest has a lot to offer. It’s a gorgeous city with many things going on, culturally very rich. To get a feel of the place you need three days, to fully appreciate it stay at least for a week.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Budapest?

Yes, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. However, it’s good to have a little bit of cash for small local vendors and markets. Cash is also good if you want to bargain about the price. Hungary is part of the EU but doesn’t use the euro yet. Most shops will accept payment in euros but have bad exchange rates, so you should always pay in forints (Hungarian currency). You could buy forints before you arrive in Hungary, but you risk getting old, expired banknotes. To avoid the hassle of going to the bank to exchange those, it’s better to do it when you arrive (but, like everywhere else, don’t change cash at the airport or the train station because the exchange rates are bad).

Which sights should I visit indoors in Budapest?

There are two main sights to consider if you want to go inside: the Parliament and the Great Synagogue. The Parliament is the most important building in Hungary and is as beautiful inside as it is outside. The Great Synagogue is unique and very beautiful as well. Both sights offer tours,  well-organized and informative. Tickets for the Parliament tour should be purchased well in advance because they’re very busy and often sold out.

Parizsi Udvar and New York Cafe are great places to grab a coffee and enjoy incredible interiors. If you want to visit New York Cafe, be ready to wait in line; it’s an insanely popular place. If you love opera, the Budapest Opera House is a must. You could take a tour, but go and check out a performance if you can get a ticket.

How do I get around Budapest?

Budapest has a very efficient public transportation system consisting of buses, trams, metro, and even ferries (not in the winter). The best places to buy physical tickets are metro stations. You can get single tickets (you need a different ticket for every ride, even in the metro-be sure to validate a ticket before you enter any means of transportation!) or passes of different lengths, which you can use for unlimited rides during a certain time period. There is also the app Budapest Go that you can download and purchase tickets.

On the other hand, Budapest is a very walkable city. Bike sharing with MOL Bubi is a convenient option, as well as scooters.

What traditional Hungarian dishes should I try?

Be sure to try goulash (a hearty soup/stew), lángos (deep-fried dough topped with different things), and chimney cake (a sweet pastry). Don’t forget to sample Hungarian wines and pálinka (fruit brandy).

Is tipping customary in Budapest?

Almost all restaurants in Budapest have a service charge between 12 and 15 percent. Keep that in mind when you are looking at prices and check the exact amount. If you want to tip after that, you can.

Other places, like bars or cafes, include a service charge less often. It’s always good to check that. If there is no service charge, tipping between 10 and 15 percent is customary for a good service.

What are the opening hours for shops and attractions in Budapest?

Most shops in Budapest are open from around 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with some larger stores staying open later. Attractions like museums typically operate from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with some closing on Mondays.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Budapest?

Yes, Budapest’s tap water is safe to drink.

1. Night Vampire Walking Tour in Buda Castle District

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my experience during the 8:00 pm English-language tour, led by Joe as our guide.

Immerse yourself in the mysteries of the night with Budapest's one-of-a-kind walking tour , centered around undead folklore and haunting tales of the Hungary and Eastern Europe.

This isn't your average historical walking tour; prepare for spine-tingling stories that delve deep into Eastern European myths about vampires, ghosts, and the undead .

Highlights of the Tour

free walking tour budapest tours

I can attest that this tour is not just another walking tour in Budapest—it's an immersive storytelling experience . Our guide, Joe, with his 20 years of improv acting experience, brings depth, humor, and a dramatic twist to Eastern European myths.

His spellbinding narrative skills are complemented by the ethereal beauty of the Castle District at night , a setting that enriches the storytelling and makes the tour truly unforgettable.

Starting Point and Accessibility

free walking tour budapest tours

The journey begins at Clark Ádám Square , located at the base of Buda Hill. From here, you'll embark on a 5-10 minute ascent up the hill's stairs. For those with mobility issues, a funicular option is available to take you to the top for an extra 10€ fee.

free walking tour budapest tours

The group size struck a perfect balance, numbering between 20 and 25 participants . This made it easy to connect with other tour participants without complicating the practical aspects of the tour, such as walking and finding a good listening spot around our guide.

Points of Critique

free walking tour budapest tours

While Joe is an engaging orator, I found the latter half of the tour to lose a bit of its initial spark. After hearing 5-6 out of the total ten tales, the storytelling began to feel a bit repetitive .

Coupled with the late evening timing, the group's energy waned toward the end. Still, Joe’s dynamism keeps the atmosphere electric for most of the tour.

Should You Go?

free walking tour budapest tours

If you're less concerned with historical facts and more interested in the dark and mysterious folklore of Budapest and Eastern Europe, this tour is a must-try. It's a thrilling way to explore the Castle District under the cloak of night.

2. Buda Castle Cave Labyrinth Walking Tour

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 1.5-hour English cave tour.

Discover the hidden depths of Budapest in the extensive cave system beneath the city's Castle District.

Known as Budavári barlang, this section was reopened to the public in 2019 after being off-limits for years.

The tour focuses on a fascinating 3km stretch of caves and takes you on a journey through time, exploring the geological and human history of these mysterious underground tunnels.

free walking tour budapest tours

What sets this tour apart is its dedication to historical accuracy .

You'll learn about how these caves formed over millions of years — you'll even get to see where a mammoth left one of its teeth!

Beyond the geology, the tour dives into the 800-year history of human usage of the caves, from medieval storage and tax evasion to their roles as prisons, war refuges, criminal hideouts, and even locations for clandestine parties in the 90s.

free walking tour budapest tours

The temperature inside the cave averages 10-12°C , so it's advisable to wear warm clothing and comfortable footwear you don't mind getting dirty.

However, for those visiting in summer attire, free ponchos are provided to keep you warm.

The meeting spot is at Trinity Square , right by the Trinity statue. A quick 5-minute walk will take you to the cave's entrance.

Unfortunately, the cave is not accessible to individuals with mobility impairments.

free walking tour budapest tours

With an group size of 20-25 participants , the tour struck a perfect balance — facilitating smooth navigation through the maze-like caves while also enabling captivating, interactive storytelling.

free walking tour budapest tours

In all honesty, there were few drawbacks to this unique journey, if any.

The tour company goes to great lengths to ensure everyone's comfort, and the expert guides make the experience engaging and educational.

If history blended with a touch of geology intrigues you, this is your tour.

Absolutely, yes!

This tour is an excellent choice for those who are looking for something more niche and offbeat than your run-of-the-mill walking tour. It's an experience that leaves you both educated and intrigued.

3. Best Jewish Quarter Walking Tour

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2.5-hour English walking tour.

Immerse yourself in the rich Jewish heritage of Budapest on this enlightening tour.

The excursion not only offers a deep dive into the harrowing years of World War II but also presents a comprehensive history of Jewish life in Hungary dating back to medieval times.

As a Hungarian who supposedly knows this country, I still learned a lot of intriguing historical facts.

free walking tour budapest tours

For history aficionados seeking more than just surface-level information, this tour is a goldmine.

The guide provides rigorous academic-level commentary , requiring a high level of English proficiency (unless you take the Spanish tour of course).

Notable landmarks include synagogues and poignant memorials dedicated to heroes who resisted Nazi and Arrow Cross Party oppression.

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour kicks off at Imre Madách Square and concludes at Dohány Street Synagogue. The entire tour is outdoors and wheelchair-accessible, and it takes place in the Jewish Quarter (VII. District).

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group (20-30 people), ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

free walking tour budapest tours

Though the tour was generally excellent, the guide could have introduced himself more formally (as he just went straight into the material) and allowed pauses for absorption between his in-depth explanations (as his speech felt like speed-reading at times).

free walking tour budapest tours

I highly recommend for history enthusiasts who appreciate a nuanced, detailed exploration of Jewish history in Budapest.

4. Best Budapest Inner City Walking Tour

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2.25-hour English walking tour.

This walking tour is a perfect way to get an overview of Budapest's history , taking place in the inner district of Pest.

You'll gain insights into our past, including the troubled times during the Soviet era , the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall which we call "The System Change," and even contemporary history and controversies.

For first-time visitors seeking a comprehensive introduction to Budapest's rich history, this tour is an ideal choice. The tour offers not just historical accuracy but also local insights, thanks to our Hungarian guide.

The meeting location is at Kossuth Square by the Hungarian Parliament. More precisely, it’s near the M2 metro and/or tram station . The tour is wheelchair-friendly and welcomes those with mobility challenges. The tour concludes at Vigadó Square.

We were among about 30 participants . Despite being a larger group, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment or educational value of the tour. I even struck up some pleasant conversations with fellow tour mates.

The only minor issue was that the tour guide was not a native English speaker . However, her genuine local Hungarian perspective more than made up for this.

5. Best Buda Castle District Walking Tour

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2-hour English walking tour.

Discover the architectural and historical gems in Budapest's Castle District with this straightforward yet thoroughly engaging walking tour. This tour offers a factual and no-nonsense overview of the district's landmarks, perfect for those wanting a solid introduction to Hungary's storied past.

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour offers an enriching walk through the charming cobblestone streets of the Castle District, covering major landmarks like the Royal Palace ("Buda Castle"), Matthias Church, and Fisherman's Bastion.

What stands out is the tour's commitment to factual storytelling, devoid of the supernatural or fantastical elements you might find on other tours.

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour kicks off at Trinity Square , right in front of the iconic Trinity Statue. Plus, the entire tour is wheelchair accessible, making it convenient for everyone

free walking tour budapest tours

With a group of roughly 25 people, it was easy to move around and the tour never felt overcrowded.

The tour delivers what it promises: a comprehensive, factual overview. However, prepare yourself for the elements—like heat, if you happen to visit during a hot spell like I did. 😅

Certainly. If you're looking for a straightforward, facts-based exploration of Budapest's Castle District, this tour fits the bill.

6. Grand City Tour of Budapest

free walking tour budapest tours

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 3-hour English walking tour.

Embark on a comprehensive 3-hour tour of Budapest, encapsulating both the Pest and Buda sides of the iconic city.

With a blend of air-conditioned bus rides and leisurely walking, you'll have the chance to witness major landmarks, from Heroes' Square to the Castle District while learning of their history.

free walking tour budapest tours

Though it provides a sweeping view, be prepared for a surface-level overview that touches upon, but does not delve deeply into, each individual area.

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour gave me a bird's eye view of Budapest . It kicked off with a brief but informative stop at Heroes' Square and proceeded to drive past local landmarks like the Opera House, Városliget and Keleti Railway Station.

What sets this tour apart is its unique approach to ascending the Castle Hill — coming up from the side opposite the Danube, a welcome change from typical tours.

free walking tour budapest tours

The journey begins at Clark Ádám Square , located at the base of Buda Hill. From here, you'll embark on a 5-10 minute ascent up the hill's stairs. A word of caution: the tour is not suitable for mobility-impaired individuals.

free walking tour budapest tours

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group, ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

free walking tour budapest tours

While the tour was extensive, it left me wanting more , especially when it came to exploring the Pest side.

The quick stop at Heroess' Square and drive-by sightings don't do justice to the richness of the landmarks.

However, the air-conditioned bus was a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. The Castle District tour was spectacular though.

free walking tour budapest tours

If you are time-constrained but still want a quick overview of Budapest, this tour fits the bill. For those looking for a more detailed exploration, consider setting aside a full day.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul holds up signed legislation creating a commission for the study of reparations in New York on December 19, 2023 in New York City. Gov. Hochul was joined by Rev. Al Sharpton, various members of New York government leadership and influential community members six months after state lawmakers passed the bill and three years after California became the first state to create a reparations task force. The bill creates a nine-member commission that would study the effects of slavery in the state and make non-binding recommendations on reparations. Three members would be appointed by the governor, three by the assembly and three by the senate. (Photo by Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)
