Roc Marciano

An MC and producer from New York City’s tradition-rich Long Island, Roc Marciano is well-respected for his moody, claustrophobic beats and stream-of-consciousness, heavily stylized lyrics. Briefly affiliated with Flipmode Squad early in his career, he formed the short-lived crew the U.N. during the early 2000s before going solo, earning massive acclaim for his self-produced 2010 full-length Marcberg. Collaborating with rappers and producers like Q-Tip , Ka , and Action Bronson , subsequent releases such as 2013’s Marci Beaucoup and 2018’s RR2: The Bitter Dose featured more experimental production as well as sharper lyricism. Numerous collaborations appeared during the early 2020s, including 2022’s The Elephant Man’s Bones, produced by the Alchemist . Born Rakeem Myer, Long Island hip-hop steered his musical vision, approach, and tastes as a youth growing up in Hempstead. He cited Long Island greats such as Public Enemy , EPMD , De La Soul , and the lesser-known Grand Daddy I.U. , as well as new-school pioneers Nas and the Notorious B.I.G. But it was Busta Rhymes , originally from Long Island’s Leaders of the New School , who gave Marciano his biggest break. Busta was given a tape of early Marciano music, and the platinum-selling rapper decided to sign Marciano to his Flipmode label, which, at the time, was one of rap’s foremost artist-owned imprints. Marciano appeared on Busta ‘s 2000 full-length Anarchy, on which he traded verses with Wu-Tang ‘s Raekwon and Ghostface (“The Heist”). Around this time, Marciano formed the U.N. , made up of Dino Brave, Laku, and Mike Raw — all high-school classmates at Long Island’s Uniondale. Together, they appeared on Pete Rock ‘s PeteStrumentals and released their buzzworthy mixtape Strength & Honor and the 2004 LP UN or U Out? Soon, though, the crew disintegrated; they found it hard to get industry traction. Marciano forged on by dropping verses on GZA ‘s Pro Tools and Marco Polo ‘s Port Authority. In 2010, he released Marcberg, his official solo debut album. He handled all production, and wrote and rhymed all but one verse. It was hailed by New York underground hip-hop royalty. The following year, he teamed up with the Alchemist and Oh No for the Greneberg EP. LUV NY, a supergroup set featuring Marciano beside the likes of Kool Keith and A.G., was released in July 2012. A few months later, Marciano issued his second proper album, Reloaded, which was mostly self-produced but also included the Alchemist as well as Q-Tip . Critical praise nearly equaled the level of Marcberg. Marci Beaucoup appeared at the end of 2013, with many features (including frequent contributors Ka and Knowledge the Pirate, plus Freeway , Guilty Simpson , Action Bronson , Evidence , and Cormega ). Marciano spent several years lying low, but was featured on a track from De La Soul ‘s And the Anonymous Nobody. He finally emerged in 2017 with his fourth album, the independently released Rosebudd’s Revenge, which included few guests but more outside production (from beatmakers including Knxwledge , the Arch Druids, and Mushroom Jesus). This kickstarted a prolific run which continued with no less than three full-lengths in 2018: the murky, electronic-influenced RR2: The Bitter Dose, Behold a Dark Horse, and the DJ Muggs -produced KAOS. The Prequel, a brief collection of rarities, appeared in 2019. The year ended with the release of the full-length Marcielago. Reasonable Drought (with Stove God Cooks ) and solo effort Mt. Marci both surfaced in 2020. Several additional collaborations followed. Delgado (with Flee Lord ) and Ekphrasis (with Bronze Nazareth ) both appeared in 2021. The following year, Marciano released Blame Kansas (with T.F. Mephux) and the acclaimed The Elephant Man’s Bones (with the Alchemist ). ~ Vincent Thomas & Paul Simpson, Rovi.

The Elephant Man’s Bones

Roc Marciano Alchemist The Elephant Mans Bones

Best New Music

By Dylan Green

ALC / Pimpire International

August 29, 2022

Rumor has it that, in 1987, Michael Jackson made a bid to buy the skeleton of Englishman Joseph Merrick. Merrick, known as the Elephant Man due to his severe physical deformities, spent his life as an object of ridicule and medical fascination before passing away in 1890 at age 27. A tragic figure with a kind heart, he would become the subject of multiple books, stage plays, and movies across the next century, most famously director David Lynch’s 1980 biopic The Elephant Man. Jackson was reportedly moved by the film, finding solace in a scene where Merrick—portrayed by actor John Hurt—is chased by an angry mob through Liverpool Street station and cries out to his attackers: “I am not an elephant. I am not an animal. I am a human being! I…am…a…man!” Over time, Jackson became fascinated by Merrick’s life. He arranged to view his skeleton at Royal London Hospital, where he allegedly offered $500,000, and later $1 million, to purchase it for his collection. Jackson and his estate have denied this story, but the legend lingers.

Roc Marciano and The Alchemist share a fascination with the idea of putting a premium on what they deem to be high art. Both are rapper-producers, Marci from Long Island and Alchemist from Beverly Hills, and both were co-signed by hip-hop royalty early in their careers. Their paths weren’t exactly the same, though. Marci built his status from the ground up after his time in Busta Rhymes ’ Flipmode Squad and the group the U.N. came to a close, while Alchemist became a marquee name producing for everyone from 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar to Boldy James and Armand Hammer . They turned their influence and underground grind into flourishing independent businesses catering directly to a clientele seeking nose-bone-shattering rap music. The Elephant Man’s Bones, the duo’s long-awaited full-length, mixes the grime they’re known for with sounds that flutter instead of seething: Imagine your favorite mob-affiliated uncle drunk at a family gathering, spinning funny, disgusting, and melancholy yarns to GoodFellas -style lounge jazz. Toned down but no less penitent, nostalgic but ready to stake a claim to a new future, it’s one of the most indulgently sinister rap records of the year.

By now Marci’s pimp-meets-capo persona is so well-established that he can afford to spend his time burrowing deeper to see how much gold he can unearth. He’s a specialist in the sense of Pusha T or Kool G Rap —his deadpan commitment to bending his schtick around different sounds is half the fun. “Me and my Uzi, we lookin’ like a couple spoonin’,” he says on opening track “Rubber Hand Grip,” the comedy and intimacy of the image never overshadowing the danger of being shot by a man who claims he “made God in my likeness.”

His reference pool brings a stark clarity to his mythmaking, giving bits of humor and pathos more depth. On “Quantum Leap,” he claims to own a Bentley that comes with his own personal version of rapper and actor Fonzworth Bentley. Names and brands slip through Marci’s stories unexpectedly, like the Champion clothing he mentions wearing back in the day on “Trillion Cut,” or two bars from the title track that nod to Billie Holiday and the sitcom Good Times to flesh out his come-up: “God bless the child y’all, I finally got it together/From good times hanging in the chow line like Florida Evans.” Elephant Man’s Bones is bursting with quotables, but more impressive is how Marci’s stories weave in seamlessly with the icons he namedrops. He writes about his triumphs and struggles like all of history was waiting for him to appear.

With few exceptions, Marci’s solo albums are known for being entirely self-produced, flooded with gossamer sampled loops and anchored by drums that range from tinny to nonexistent. Alchemist handles every song here, approaching each with an ominous elegance. Aside from the 8-bit synth blasts of “Daddy Kane,” most of Elephant Man’s Bones is dominated by keys—pianos, organs, harpsichord—and drums, teasing out a lounge-jazz vibe he rarely indulges.

Previous one-off Marci and Alchemist collaborations were busier and more boisterous. Both 2016’s “ All for It ” and 2018’s “ In Case You Forgot ,” team-ups that appeared through Alchemist’s Craft Singles series, leaned into standard, bludgeoning boom-bap drum programming. Elephant Man’s Bones is more like a shadowy extension of the sunlit warble of “Harry O.,” from 2019’s Yacht Rock 2 —relaxed and confident, with a Ruger in the champagne bucket just in case. “Rubber Hand Grip” turns the psychedelia of Alchemist’s work on Armand Hammer’s Haram inside out, its chimes and drums throbbing like an irregular heartbeat. “Quantum Leap” and “Liquid Coke” are two of the prettiest and most stripped-back beats he’s ever created. The crisp vocal loops on songs like “JJ Flash” and the title track float past tiptoeing drums to hover alongside Marci’s voice. Alchemist’s beats are relaxed and full-bodied, creating a calming atmosphere that Marci stuffs with allusions to Call of Duty and gangsters catching bullets with their teeth. For the duo to finally meet in the middle for a full-length project after all these years—and for that project to be as warm, gutter, and satisfying as The Elephant Man’s Bones —is remarkable. When two rap veterans show out with this much style and skill, it’s easy for them to name their price.

Twenty-Plus Years Into Rap, Roc Marciano Is Still Setting Trends

By Will Dukes

If you’ve never bought sneakers anywhere but on an app, you probably can’t sit at the same table as Roc Marciano . And when, on 2017’s “Rosebudd’s Revenge,” he raps, “I’m in Miami wearing your rent on a pair of kicks,” you just know that wherever he gets his from is as top-secret as the spots where he buys all those rare records that make up the samples on his tracklists. What Roc, a 20-plus-years veteran, does is give the listener limited-edition, ultramodern vibes, but with quaint, brick-and-mortar charm. His style was perfected in the era of “off the meat rack” — you can’t get it off the rack.

The entire Griselda clique can trace its lineage back to Roc Marci; his no-filter, direct-to-consumer model is so tapped in but unconcerned with the mainstream as such that it raises questions about what “mainstream” even means anymore.

Even Jay-Z is paying attention. The Roc Nation head honcho isn’t currently on Instagram, but go on over to Roc Marciano’s page and there they are: the Brooklyn don posed up for a recent flick with the Long Island maverick. Roc’s last solo outing, 2020’s Mt. Marci, built off the late Nipsey Hussle’s pathbreaking model, allowing listeners to purchase the album directly from his website at $40 a pop. And his coveted vinyl releases — which go for as much as $100 — are the stuff of countless Reddit threads.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

From that album on, Roc, like a rap game Philip Glass, began to further unpack the concept of boom-bap, rendering it into something damn near minimalism. With all due respect to MF DOOM (may he rest in beats), every time you hear a spare chord sequence or a ragged, indeterminate loop with nothing but a ghostly wail and, at most, a tambourine or muted woodblock for percussion — as on J. Cole’s “Snow on tha Bluff” or Pink Siifu’s “Stay Sane” — a not-small debt is owed to Roc Marci.

Roc’s experimental flair informs his project with Syracuse, New York upstart Stove God Cook$, 2020’s Reasonable Drought — a one-of-one union of highbrow brick talk and avant-garde beats — as well as  Delgado , his new collaborative album with Mobb Deep affiliate Flee Lord. The new single from the latter, “This Is What Ya Want?” is all boss-tier bravado, with Flee sounding scrappy over his mentor’s demented, bass-heavy backdrop.

Marcberg had a bugged-out sensibility that made it kind of different and fresh. Eleven years later, you see a whole crop of younger artists, like the Griselda acts, doing something very similar. How did you manage to predict that whole wave?

Honestly, I feel like just having good taste, first and foremost. I know what works for me, and that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to rep my hood. It’s like, “This how we sound” — which I feel like is the real essence of hip-hop in general. That’s what it really was about.

Your most recent solo project, Mt. Marci, has a song called “Downtown ‘81,” which is, of course, a reference to Jean-Michel Basquiat. Could you have seen yourself back in the day hanging out with him and Fab 5 Freddy, and that whole early hip-hop crew?

Gunna announces 2024 the bittersweet tour, meet the young producers making beats in ten seconds or less.

What were some of your inspirations, as far as music, growing up?

Just like everybody else, I grew up on Luther Vandross and Michael Jackson. It’s not like I come from a music household where I was introduced to all the crazier stuff. I went looking for the crazier stuff as a youngin’, because I loved hip-hop and I wanted to see where they was getting the music from to make the music I like. So I started on that journey early, listening to all kinds of stations at the end of the radio station, listening for my own samples and stuff like that, and then I started to get appreciation for all types of music — from jazz, to soul, old rap, stuff like that.

Do you think you’re the best producer on the mic?

Do you ever get any inspiration from some of these younger artists who maybe don’t rhyme as intricately as you do?

Yeah. Oh, hell yeah. I just love good shit. It don’t matter what style it is. Every style of rap, whether it’s trap rap or the style of rap I’m doing, you got good shit and you got bad shit. So I can appreciate it for sure.

I was listening to “Saw” the other day off the Marcielago project, and that’s like four minutes of straight up, spacey, apocalyptic, Ayahuasca, vision-from-St.-John shit. What were you on when you wrote that?

That’s what that beat was saying to me. I was just talking back. This is me and the track having a conversation, really. That track took me there. You know what I’m saying? Some serious Mad Max shit.

Have you ever tried psychedelics?

Definitely. I tried DMT before. Shit like that. I never got crazy… I dabbled with mushrooms and psychedelics here and there. I seen some shit. [Laughs.] Yeah. I’ve seen some shit.

There’s a line on “Saw” where you talk about being in the building, getting dapped up by Jay-Z after he allegedly stabbed Lance “Un” Rivera in 1999. Is that a true story?

Yeah. That’s a true story. That’s definitely a true story. I mean, as far as the stabbing, I don’t know how true that is. But the night that [laughs] allegedly happened, yeah, I was there. Yeah, he gave me a pound. When he was dipping through the party and shit. I wasn’t the only person he probably gave dap to. It’s Jay-Z. You know what I’m saying?

I’ve seen more recent photos of you and Jay on your IG. I guess we can assume he’s a fan of yours?

I mean… If he put me on his list at the end of the year a few times, that should make it a personal declaration that he’s a fan, know what I’m sayin’?

Any projects or partnerships with him in the works?

You know, with Jay anything is fucking possible. But not right now, we fully independent.

That’s crazy. I sent him that. Flee is a horse that you better put your money on. I wasn’t surprised when I got it back. He’s a monster, I’m a great producer. [Laughs] What niggas thought was going to happen?

I know Flee Lord was down with Prodigy, and you were as well. Could you speak about that?

Well, I was always a fan of P… I wouldn’t say I was down with him. But he was from the same hood. We met P and Havoc when they was just kids like we was. We ain’t even know people could get a record deal that young. It was kind of crazy. How do you even get a record deal? … And then, fast-forward to, you know… Eventually, P hit me and I started working with him in the studio, at Alchemist’s crib. That meant a lot to me.

He’s definitely missed — a true legend.

When I got there, P already had his verse done, or he had just finished it. I remember when they played his verse. I looked at him. I said, “Oh, you brought the old Prodigy out.” Yo, he went savage… I was like, “Oh, you on your bullshit today?” Like…when I got in there, I heard Prodigy verse? I didn’t think I could top it. I was like, “Damn!” Like, I can’t fuck with that, but I’m going to just give it a good old college try. [Laughs.]

Everything from your merch to the way your album covers are designed to has a distinctive look. I can see a Roc Marci and MoMA collab or something. Could we see a Roc Marci album playing in an art exhibition anytime soon?

Absolutely. I mean, look at what I’m doing with Gallery Dept . That shit is art. That’s actually going on, under people’s noses, whether they aware or not. They’re playing my shit at exhibitions and things of that nature, and playing our music in Paris at fashion shows and shit like that. It’s happening already. But I definitely could see more of it.

New York Rap Legend Roc Marciano Wants to Dip Into R&B Next

roc marciano tour 2022

Ten years ago, the New York hip-hop scene was in a transitional period. Jay-Z and Nas were past their prime and relegated to making albums that only advanced their self-mythology; Fabolous’s bars seemed to get more hollow and unsophisticated by the Love & Hip Hop episode; and Harlem rapper Max B was sentenced to 75 years in prison on conspiracy charges. But Long Island’s Roc Marciano kept plugging away and upended all of it.

Originating in Hempstead, Marciano, or “Roc Marci” as fans in the know call him, got his start on Busta Rhymes’s Flipmode Squad — if you make YouTube or SoundCloud your main musical library , there are seeds of Roc all over underground East Coast rap records from the early aughts — before he broke out on his own to release menacing classic New York records like 2010’s Marcberg and 2012’s Reloaded . While other rappers from the area were creating new lanes by combining DNA from different cities, Roc was expanding on his New York vernacular. Rapping in a one-sentence staccato, he was subtle and intricate without diving into a word salad. And while other underground artists were unique in their business approach, Roc launched an entire subculture of subverting labels by selling his music straight from his website.

Roc is still reinventing himself. The Elephant Man’s Bones, his excellent Alchemist-produced new album, sees him continuing his reign, mapping out new subway routes and telling previously unheard stories of criminal warfare in the Giuliani and Dinkins eras. He spoke to Vulture over the phone to talk about the new record, what he wants to try next musically, and life with Flipmode Squad.

Your debut solo album dropped in 2010, but before that you have the U.N. album in 2004 as well as your work with Busta’s Flipmode Squad. How did that time split in the industry help you begin your solo career? It gave me a good training ground. It gave me the confidence to go ahead and do what I do now.

What was it exactly about the system — and your setbacks and highlights in it — that allowed you to create your own unique business model and let people buy records directly from you. Early on, with a lot of artists coming in and out where you don’t know the business well, you put out the projects and you don’t get what you should. So you learn a business model that helps you capitalize on yourself. It’s not about being more than anyone else but rather about just making sure you maximize you.

The production on your early features, like “ The Heist ,” was less minimalist than what you’re known for now as a solo artist. How did you get the idea to strip the drums away? When you start, people are usually producing for you. So when you’re in the system, I didn’t get to do it much. When I went out on my own, I was like, Let me start doing this the way I want to do it . I’ve always thought that.

Your music also uses pretty subversive boom-bap production. You had samples of movie scenes on Reloaded but not famous ones; they were more of these B-list classics. Like the Gotti TV movie on “ Two Zips .” That mirrored the vibe of your music. That was on purpose. It is all related. Taking different styles, in music and movies, it is all the same. That’s hip-hop.

There’s also a dark comedy to your work, like you’re telling gloomy stories as if you’re a retired hustler from Hempstead. What did your hometown teach you? Taught me everything. I still remember so much. You come from a place where people don’t have much. You come from the hustle. You have that poverty and pain in your mind, and I’m not far away from ever having to go back. Look at YSL .

Why was now the time to work with the Alchemist for a full-length project? I felt that this was a good boxing match. I didn’t want to wait, wanted to do this now. It worked out perfectly; by the time my career and my patience became fortified, we both became legends.

The dynamic that the Alchemist and Prodigy have had on their past work felt like it would bode well for you since you and Prodigy have similar styles. What do you think of Alchemist’s work with him? First off, P is a legend, but I never think of anyone else’s work when I do my own. I am only thinking about what I can do to increase my artistry. It’s never what happened in the past for me; it’s about my legacy and how we can increase.

It has been 12 years since you dropped Marcberg . What about that album are you most proud of? My sound that I have. I always knew I was gonna bring that to the game. And it just so happened to be at a time where it was, like I said, a more shiny pop sound or whatever the case may be. And I’m just accomplished without needing that. So I just really wanted to make the best music I could make while being true to myself. And when hip-hop was in such a bad space, nobody was trying to fill that void. You know, a lot of people tried to catch a quick hit. I was obsessed. So I was looking at it, like, I know how my first come out . I wanted to create an album if you go in the war that was the mind I had when I was thinking that out.

What do you see yourself doing in the next ten years? I want to continue with the artwork. I want to do soul, R&B, and different kinds of rap. I listen to everything, some jazz. I’m pushing boundaries. I want to constantly be in the state of discovery. We’re going to get into more shit. From Marcberg on, I always wanted to make music I want to hear.
