Vast spaces that were long unexplored and still remain untamed in places, the amazing contrasts between the light reflections from the ochre-hued lands, the delicate green of the eucalyptus forests, the deep blue of the ocean and the luminous white of the beaches and cliffs… From its north to its south, this island continent bordered by the Great Barrier Reef , the largest coral reef in the world, fascinates through its wild landscapes and scenery, the ancient myths and traditions of the Aboriginal peoples , and its incredible endemic wildlife.
In the spirit of reconciliation, PONANT acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

Top 5 things to do in the Coral Sea
Australia's south coast
Although vibrant Sydney could put it in the shade, Melbourne has a distinguished side that makes it irresistible. Anchored in the 19th century, this "Paris of the Antipodes" has the charm of yesteryear. To see it for yourself, simple stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens or the elegant Carlton Gardens and admire the Royal Exhibition Building : a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Equally, you may prefer the calm of the Yarra River's banks or enjoy the lively St Kilda Beach with its open-air cinema and hundred-year-old amusement park.
With over a third of the territory made up of nature reserves, national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Tasmania is a paradise for nature lovers. It is known as the "natural state". From the charming little village of Beauty Point, it is thus possible to explore the fertile valley of the Tamar River and its famous wine trail , which is classed as one of the 10 best in the world. To the north, out in Bass Strait, lie the wild, untamed shores of King Island , which as well as being a surfers' paradise is also famous for the delicate flavours of its local agricultural produce.
The biggest city in northern Australia, Darwin has only existed for a relatively short time, but is cosmopolitan. An estimated 50 ethnic groups live here. On Smith Street, you can find a range of stores selling aborigine art souvenirs. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is also well worth a visit. This cultural space explains the culture and rituals of these initial Australian inhabitants. Finally, for some relaxation, head to Mindil Beach . This beach loved by locals is the perfect place to swim, watch a colourful sunset or browse the designers' market.
People often say the Kimberley is the wildest part of Australia. From the Bungle Bungle Range with its ochre and grey striped domes to the horizontal waterfalls and twin King George Falls and the open-air aboriginal art galleries , the Kimberley is nothing if not an adventure. Nature here is spectacular and unavoidable.
Dos. Being sociable is a key part of Australian etiquette. They often call each other " mate ". Being snobbish and showing signs of social/hierarchical superiority are frowned upon. In this multiethnic country, respecting other cultures is essential.
Don'ts. Australians like to play by the rules. Visitors should do the same.
Below are the typical dishes loved by Australians. Together, they make a special menu! When it comes to savoury flavours, barbecues are king. However, some people prefer a meat pie . This British-origin dish is a real favourite, with around 250 million said to be eaten each year. Lamingtons are the sweet treats to try. These traditional cakes are Genoise sponges coated in a chocolate sauce and rolled in desiccated coconut. They are so famous that the National Trust of Queensland has declared them a national symbol and they have their own day: 21 July.
Myths and legends
There are a wide range of aboriginal legends as there are so many tribes and language families (around 400). However, the Dreamtime is one of the most frequent. This is the period before today's world was created. However, it also still exists and allows communication with the spirits. The aborigines have a strong bond with nature and believe each of its components to be a trace left by the beings who created the world.
In the spotlight
Scientists believe that Tasmania , an island off south-eastern Australia, has the world's purest air (despite atmospheric pollution levels rising). This is because it is relatively isolated. To the north, 240 kilometres separate the island from the continent. To the west, Argentina is over 8000 kilometres away. To the south, there is only the Antarctic. This means that the air driven by the Roaring Forties arrives in Tasmania pollution-free.
Books. Often, the only things people remember about Australia are kangaroos and koalas, dangerous insects, desert-like landscapes, muscular surfers, isolated inhabitants and age-old aborigine culture. But what do we really know? This is the question posed by Bill Bryson in his book Down Under . The author travels the country, tearing apart clichés or confirming they are true. He uses caustic humour which helps highlight aberrations and other serious issues weighing on Australia.
Music. The didgeridoo is the traditional Australian aborigine instrument. This wind instrument looks like a giant flute carved out of eucalyptus and is between 1 m and 1.6 m long and 5 to 30 cm in diameter. It produces a droning sound which can, for example, imitate animal noises. The didgeridoo is often accompanied by percussion: rhythm sticks and boomerangs hit together.
Film. n 2002, Phillip Noyce adapted Doris Pilkington's autobiographical novel Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence . This poignant narrative about the "stolen generations" immerses the audience in 30s' Australia. At that time, the government had an anti-interbreeding policy. Two sisters, Molly and Gracie, age 14 and 8, and their cousin Daisy, aged 10, are forced to go to a camp where they will be trained to be perfect members of household staff. They find a way to escape and cover the 1600 kilometres separating them from their family. This dangerous journey through the Australian bush is made even more perilous because they are being trailed by the authorities.
Facts and figures
Australia has huge numbers of native species: 80% of the 286 mammal species, 90% of the insects and arachnids and 75% of the vascular plants.

You can circumnavigate the world in just 24 days, if you’re willing to pay six-figure prices for the privilege. Here’s why more travelers are signing up.
Courtesy TCS World Travel
Fancy traveling around the world in a flying hotel with 50-odd other people? If yes, you’re not alone.
More travelers than ever are choosing to climb aboard airliners that have been reconfigured and refashioned as ultra-luxe private jets with sleek leather bar-lounges, lie-flat beds and tricked-out kitchens heavily staffed by a motley crew of pilots, flight attendants, engineers, doctors, cameramen, tour leaders and ‘expedition guides’ trained to help you make the most of it. After all, what’s a ‘round the world adventure without a few passepartout companions?
Apart from jaw dropping luxury, the air cruise appeal is all about time. These transcontinental tours offer curated itineraries and insider access to some of the world’s best hotels and experiences while eliminating the hassles (and considerable time loss) of flying commercially. What used to take months via 20th century ocean liners can now happen in a matter of weeks. For the privilege, passengers are willing to pay more than ever — from $80,000 to up to $215,000 per person. And prices are rising; Four Seasons’ ticket prices have increased over 80% since 2015 .
A kangaroo in Perth, Australia, a stop on Safrans du Monde's World Tour Special Edition 2024
Tour operator TCS World Travel was early to this rarefied airspace. The company operated its first group jet expedition in 1995, and has since clocked over 300 private tours in 200 destinations. Despite Covid-era border closures, rising fuel costs, and serious concerns surrounding the climate impact of private jet carbon emissions , TCS Chief Customer Officer Chris Kollas claims the following: “TCS is a profitable, self-sustaining company and our primary business continues to be operating group jet expeditions.”
Eventually, hoteliers not only saw, but seized this opportunity. In 2015, Four Seasons launched its own Round-the-World tour (in partnership with TCS operators), pioneering the hotel brand/private jet mashup and entrenching brand loyalty in the process; on these tours, guests stay exclusively in Four Seasons properties. When I covered the launch for Bloomberg , much of the hype surrounded just how luxurious the on-board experience could be (Bose headphones? Bvlgari toiletries? Private chef? Check, check, check.) Since then, luxury entrants like Aman Resorts , Abercrombie & Kent , French travel agency Safrans du Monde , and adventure-travel outfits like National Geographic have been creating ever-more personalized and far-flung itineraries to satisfy the most discerning of guests. As ever, the proliferation of product is driven by demand.
In just a few weeks, Safrans du Monde will turn its Airbus A340 into a flying hotel, taking 50 passengers on its “ Special Edition ” tour, personally accompanied by the company’s French globetrotting founder and CEO, Guy Bigiaoui. The group will visit nine destinations in 24 days, including Hawaii, Fiji, Tasmania, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, the Maldives and Tanzania, before returning to Paris. “Part of the enrichment of this kind of trip is what you share with your fellow travelers. Clients understand that even before they start the trip; they know they like to travel as individuals, but they’re open to what this whole group experience will bring to them in terms of meaningful, memorable human exchanges,” says Bigiaoui.
Lie flat beds on the Airbus 340, reconfigured as a private jet for Safrans du Monde tours.
If you’re considering taking any of these trips, the observations of a few fellow travelers might help inform your decision, over-and-above the brochure. According to passengers who took ‘round the world tours in 2023, these are the top pros and cons:
- The Paperwork Is Sorted | Visas, insurance, and itineraries are all organized with impressive speed and efficiency. Not only is the full itinerary and all meals, drinks, accommodations, entertainment, and even tips pre-arranged, you don’t have to worry about your luggage. It will be waiting for you in each hotel room upon arrival. “If you can afford to do it, any of these places are accessible. The destinations themselves were not really the thing. Not having to do any of the research about the locations made it so easy, we didn’t have to think about it. Our hotels were phenomenal. That was a huge plus to us,” says Tony Staub, co-owner of Deer Creek Preserve in Maryland.
- The Plane Is Very Comfortable | Air cruise operators don’t own their aircraft. They are often leasing a commercial Airbus A321 (narrow body) or Airbus A340 (wide-body), rather than a Boeing . These jets can handle 300 passengers, but they’re redesigned with a “VIP configuration” to pamper fewer guests, with ample room to rest and sleep, or socialize and cavort at leisure. In an Airbus A340, there are two extra tanks for fuel and four engines, which means you can avoid having to land and refuel.
- Food and Drinks Are Unlimited (And Fancy) | Traveling with a group is much easier when you’re not worried about the bill at a restaurant. When you’re dining out, choose what you want to eat or drink. It's included in the price. On board Safrans du Monde , for example, appetizers, canapés, and 3-course meals are prepared by private chef Paul Caussé. While in-flight, guests can socialize at the on-board bar and enjoy an extensive list of fine wines, spirits and champagne, standard for around-the-world tickets.
- Events Are Unforgettable | “The parties and shows Safrans put on were surprising and amazing. They rented out the whole temple at Angkor Wat [a Buddhist temple in Cambodia], and had this extravagant, catered event. They’d brought in back up trailers, rented lights, generators, dancers, and fancy meals. There was a lot of decadence,” says Leslye Staub, Tony’s spouse and co-owner of Deer Creek Preserve. “Our first night in Brazil was unbelievable. The group that won Carnival that year came and did their competition performance for us in our hotel banquet hall! We would absolutely travel with Safrans again; they did a fantastic job with extra touches.”
Flying to the Maldives with Safrans du Monde.
- Not Enough Free Time | “We felt like we were not in any place long enough. It was a tiny little taste of the world. We just want more time in each location; even just half a day of free time. The problem is how much longer can you make the trip, and how much more expensive can it be before you scare people away? After 24 days, people were exhausted at the end,” says passenger Leslye Staub.
- Your Itinerary Can Change, Without Notice | Before Safrans took off on its October tour last year, war broke out between Israel and Palestine. The original itinerary included Jordan and Petra, but these visits were canceled. Organizers quickly rerouted to Jaipur, india. By all accounts, the Jaipur hotel and Bollywood party experience became a group favorite.
- Your Aircraft Can Change, Without Notice | In some locales, it’s simply not possible to land an Airbus. “We had to take a commercial flight to Bora Bora, and it was delayed by 5 hours, in a hot, sweaty airport. In Peru we had to take a commercial flight both ways to Cusco. Flight control said: this plane is too big, you can’t land here. So Safrans bought commercial tickets for everyone. Couples were broken up, our seats were scattered. It didn’t go over very well,” adds Staub. How often does this kind of thing happen and why? Danielle Shehab, Senior Passenger Charter Broker for Chapman Freeborn Airchartering , explains that aircraft carriers must obtain landing permits ahead of time. But when locations change, due to inclement weather, political unrest, or technical failures, obtaining new permits isn’t necessarily quick or easy. “The issue can come down to permits. We work backup options. The backup can be booking commercial tickets, or delaying the trip by a day, or even replacing the aircraft — but that’s not something that we’ve seen a lot of. The challenge is getting permits. There are ways to expedite that.”
- Rethink Your Luggage Situation | Between locations, you might suddenly be told to downsize. Small charter flights often can’t handle heavy weight, and passengers are asked to be flexible. Staub adds: “On Easter Island, at 10:30 at night, we get off the dinner bus and they tell us: oh, you can have one bag for Bora Bora for the next four days. You need to rethink your entire luggage situation. We didn’t know we needed to pack that way. In a couple different destinations, you can only have your carry-on. That was tricky. There’s a lot of repacking.”

Despite the reroutes, the last-minute packing, and the exhaustion, the pros far outweigh the cons. These passengers say they’re already booking their next ‘round the world trip.

Virgin cruise cancels Australia sailings over escalating tensions in Red Sea
A major cruise company which took over Aussie ports this summer has been forced to cancel its future plans Down Under over growing fears for passengers.

‘Ongoing conflict’: Branson given ‘no choice’
Heightened tensions in the Red Sea has led a major luxury cruise line to cancel all of its sailings into Australia.
US-based cruise line Virgin Voyages has announced it will cancel all sailings by luxury, adults-only ship Resilient Lady to Australia starting later 2024 and early 2025.
It comes as Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to attack and threaten container vessels sailing through the Red Sea in retaliation against Israel’s invasion of Gaza.
At least two dozen trips have been taken off Australian holiday-makers schedule as a result of the cancellation, including a six-night voyage from Perth to Melbourne in early December and a 7-night New Year’s Eve trip on December 29.
“We remain very concerned about potential escalations in the Red Sea over the next 12 months,” a Virgin Voyages spokesman said in a statement.
“This significant and ongoing conflict puts unacceptable risks for safe passage through the region for our sailors, crew and vessel.”
As the Yemeni rebel group stepped up its attacks on ships in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, the US and UK have ramped up attacks against more than a dozen Houthi sites. The attacks, backed by Australia, came after the Houthis began hijacking commercial ships sailing through the Red Sea in November.
They have since attacked more than two dozen others with drones, missiles and speed boats.
The Resilient Lady, which was due to dock into Adelaide later this year, will now complete its Mediterranean sailing season in October and divert its course towards Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.
Virgin Voyages said all customers affected by the recent changes would receive a refund.
“To say that we are disappointed to have come to this tough conclusion is an understatement. These adjustments are happening now in order to minimise potential future disruption to our passengers’ holiday plans,” a spokesman said.
“We are currently working through options to return to Australia and the Asia Pacific region once regional repositioning opportunities become more tenable.”

Virgin Voyages luxury cruise line Resilient Lady will not anchor in Australia due to dangers in the Red Sea
Virgin Voyages has cancelled scheduled sailings from Australia across late 2024 to 2025 with all customers to be refunded due to fears of Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea.
Mounting tensions in the Red Sea has caused Virgin Voyages to cancel all upcoming cruises on its Resilient Lady vessel which was to dock in Adelaide in early December.
The adults-only luxury cruise ship, currently based in Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, will travel to the Mediterranean in October to commence operations there before diverting to Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.
The Resilient Lady will "take the long way" back to Europe from Australia in what Virgin Voyages has described as a "once in a lifetime sailing around the coast of Africa".
"To say that we are disappointed to have come to this tough conclusion is an understatement," a Virgin Voyages spokesperson said.
"Like many other cruise brands, we have been watching the current conflict in the Middle East closely, connecting regularly with global security experts to consider the impacts to the repositioning voyages planned for Resilient Lady in 2024.
"We remain concerned about potential escalations in this part of the world over the next 12 months and the risk that this presents for safe passage through the region. As a result, we have been left with no choice but to make changes to Resilient Lady's repositioning voyage."
Due to the indiscriminate attacks from the air and sea by Iran-backed Houthi Rebels, the Resilient Lady will not pass through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea and back to the Mediterranean, and will not make the trip back around the horn of Africa to return to Australia as previously scheduled.
The Yemeni rebel group have declared their attacks are in protest to the war in Gaza following Hamas' invasion into Israel on October 7, where they killed 1,200 Israelis and took 200 hostages, sparking a ground assault by the IDF to dismantle the terror organisation controlling the Gaza Strip.
"These adjustments are happening now in order to minimize potential future disruption to our passengers' holiday plans knowing there is a high likelihood that changes would need to happen in the future," the Virgin Voyages spokesperson said.
Customers who have booked tickets on any of the more than two dozen now cancelled voyages can receive a refund or rebook for later in 2025 when the ship is set to return to the Asia Pacific area, once regional "repositioning opportunities" become more "tenable".
The billion dollar luxury cruise ship arrived in Sydney on December 4 where it was greeted by Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson.
"Sydney is one of my favourite cities in the world, and we wanted to ensure our arrival was as spectacular as the Sydney Harbour itself," Sir Richard Branson said.
"To stand at the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and watch Resilient Lady come into Circular Quay was one of the most exciting moments since we founded the Virgin brand."
