Ari Shaffir is back with his latest hilarious tour. Coming to Glasgow’s O2 Academy on 27th April 2023.

Stand-up comedian, podcaster, and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show — but way filthier and without the puppets.

The New York-native grew up Orthodox Jewish, spent 2 years in a yeshiva in Israel, and came back to America to lose his religion and become a comic.

Shaffir released two Netflix specials, “Double Negative” which is presented in two 45-minute episodes called “Children” and “Adulthood.” He has released two specials on Comedy Central — “Paid Regular” and “Passive Aggressive.”

Prior to these specials, Shaffir’s stand-up album, “Revenge for the Holocaust,” went to #1 on both iTunes charts and Amazon.com the week of its premiere.

He also finished 3 seasons as the host and co-creator of “This is Not Happening.”

In addition to his numerous appearances on the Joe Rogan podcast, he is best known for his last special, “Jew,” which garnered over 4 million views in its first month and was written up in The NY Times in its list of best specials of the year. You might also know Ari from the storytelling show he created and hosted on Comedy Central called “This Is Not Happening.” Ari also has a Netflix special called “Double Negative” and a Comedy Central special called “Paid Regular.” Ari Shaffir has also appeared on WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla show, Your Mom’s House, 2 Bears 1 Cave, Theo Von’s podcast, Andrew Schulz’s podcast, TigerBelly, and many many more. These appearances have made him a favorite in the comedy podcast world. His own podcast, Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank is a chart topper that comes out every week wherever you watch or listen to podcasts.

In Ari’s words “The deal is, this is a dirty show. It’s not completely offensive but definitely some parts are offensive. So don’t bring that one friend in your friend group who makes that tsk noise a lot. Just tell them you’re doing something else or your grandmother died or your grandmother killed somebody and you gotta be a character witness. Whatever. Just don’t bring them. But everybody else for sure come.”

Wow - I've seen Ari 3 times now and he continues to get better each time. His jokes aren't cheap (I hate a simple-minded punchline), he knows how tone and inflection deliver emotion and punctuation to the audience, and he knows exactly how to stay intelligent about his comedy. I even find myself impressed by his ability to navigate taboo subjects, and his confidence to abandon bits that are not resonating with the audience.

If I had to guess how close he was to his next special, I'd say he's at 95%. The entire routine was tight and held the audience's attention throughout. I am consistently impressed by this man!

Ari has yet to let me down. This is the second show of his in the last 3 years I've seen. I'm consistently surprised at how he can fill full sets with quality material that has me bursting out in laughter and always wanting more. Not only are his sets great, but the material is never repeated. There's no issues with catching his podcasts or Comedy Central's This Is Not Happening show and running into regurgitated material. I loved the show, the people I brought loved the show, and we're all looking forward to when Ari returns to Seattle!

Legendary comedy club Stand Up NY leaves Upper West Side and opens a Times Square outpost

( New York Jewish Week ) — After 38 years on the Upper West Side, the legendary comedy club Stand Up NY has moved downtown — to Times Square.  

The venue on Broadway and 78th Street, which has hosted the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, Robin Williams, Pete Davidson and Amy Schumer, along with many other hundreds of other comedians, is decamping to a new spot inside the Italian restaurant Bond 45 at 221 West 46th St. 

“Times have changed since COVID,” said Dani Zoldan, who has owned Stand Up NY since 2008. “I was just itching for a change and to refresh the brand.”

Stand Up NY Times Square had its grand opening on March 14 with headliners Ari Shaffir and George Wallace. The Upper West Side location hosted its last performance on Thursday night, featuring comedian Judy Gold, and will vacate the premises by Sunday, Zoldan said.

Zoldan, who was a New York Jewish Week “36 to Watch” honoree last year, is also the creator of the annual Chosen Comedy Festival at the Coney Island Amphitheater, which has drawn thousands of fans for lineups of mostly Jewish comedians. Stand Up NY is currently in the midst of a 27-city North American “Stand Up for Israel” tour featuring Jewish comics that raises money for Israeli charities and Friends of the IDF. 

“ My Jewish identity influences my work in many ways, including having worked with comedians to create content and promote multiple Jewish causes,” Zoldan told the New York Jewish Week in 2023 , adding that the Chosen Comedy Festival “unites Jews from all backgrounds over a shared experience.”

Zoldan said the Upper West Side venue was losing out on foot traffic in the neighborhood’s quieter, post-COVID era. Plus, it was becoming harder to convince performers to travel to the Upper West Side for a gig when most of the comedy scene takes place downtown, he said. 

Zoldan said he was excited by Times Square, which he considers the epicenter of the New York entertainment scene — as well as the tourist dollars that it attracts. “I like being in an area where there’s more energy,” Zoldan said. “There’s so much going on in Times Square — we’re right across from ‘Hamilton,’ ‘Sweeney Todd’ is next door and there’s a Marriott across the street. There are endless opportunities. It’s much more accessible, there are more ways we can fill the seats.” 

“Especially since Caroline’s closed, there’s been an opportunity to bring stand up to Times Square,” he added, referring to a popular club that shut down in 2022. “We’re finding ourselves learning from the Broadway folks and trying to tap into that audience, which is a little different than other comedy club strategies.” 

Zoldan added that even though the club is moving out a heavily Jewish neighborhood — where it is just around the corner from Zabar’s — he still plans to book Jewish acts and hopes Jewish crowds will continue to come out to shows. He noted that the new location is close to the upscale kosher steakhouse Le Marais as well as the kosher bakery Patis. It will also be serving kosher wine.

In addition to the Times Square location, Zoldan said Stand Up NY will still cater to the Upper West Side crowd on the weekends at a location in the Lincoln Center area, which he hopes will open in May.

“It should be easier to fill the seats in Lincoln Center because that’s where our existing audience is,” Zoldan said. “There’s Lincoln Center, there’s dance, there’s opera, there’s Juilliard and across the street is the New York Film Center. It feels natural to have comedy there.”
