Fred again...

4 - 8 Sep 2023

Fred again.. has announced a massive four-night run at Alexandra Palace in September 2023.

Known for his deeply personal albums from the Actual Life series, the prolific London artist has garnered acclaim from critics and a hugely dedicated fanbase. In the past year, he transformed his records into immersive, communal experiences, selling out shows across the UK and USA. Mixmag recognised him among the “Top 10 Live Acts Of 2022” for the second consecutive year.

Fred’s viral success continued with his Boiler Room session , which surpassed 19M streams in just four weeks. His now-iconic Tiny Desk Concert also showcased his genre-blurring, sonically inventive, and deeply moving performances, highlighting his undeniable talent and ability to touch people’s hearts.

Fred Again at Alexandra Palace: timings, setlist and everything you need to know

The electronic producer is playing a four-night residency at Ally Pally this week

Ed Cunningham

If you’re not aware of Fred Again, well, where have you been? Over the past few years Fred Again (real name Fred Gibson) has grown into one of the world’s biggest names in electronic and pop music. He’s known as much for his mesmerising on-stage beatmaking as he is for his deeply personal ‘Actual Life’ album series.

Fred Again kicked off a four-night residency at London ’s Alexandra Palace last night (September 4), with further shows on September 5, 6 and 8. For those three Ally Pally dates left to go, here’s everything you need to know, from set times and setlists to ticket availability.

What time will Fred Again come on stage?

Following from his show last night, we’d expect Fred Again to start on stage at around 9pm.

What’s the full setlist for Fred Again’s show at Ally Pally?

The electronic pop musician has promised a different setlist every night. However, this was what he played last night, on September 4.

  • Kyle (i found you)
  • Bleu (better with time)
  • Tate (how i feel)
  • Kammy (like i do)
  • Rumble (Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan cover)
  • Chanel (Frank Ocean cover)
  • Sabrina (i am a party)
  • (Romy cover)
  • Angie (i've been lost)
  • Clara (the night is dark)
  • Delilah (pull me out of this)

Who is supporting Fred Again?

No support has been confirmed

What time do doors open?

Doors open at 6:30pm on all three dates.

When will Fred Again’s Alexandra Palace shows end?

Curfew is at 11pm on all three dates.

Are there any tickets left?

Tickets for all shows are officially sold out. Some are being re-sold on ticketing sites, though make sure to be on the lookout for scammers.

What are reviews saying?

The Evening Standard described last night’s performance as ‘an overwhelming emotional journey’, reporting that the gig considered ‘a steady flow of dance tracks’, even if ‘the 30-year-old producer’s set came to an end sooner than expected’.

All that being said, the musician has said that each night will be different to the last. So there’s no telling what the next three shows will be like.

Is there a bag policy?

Gig attendees at Ally Pally are only permitted to bring in one small bag no bigger than A4 size.

What’s Alexandra Palace’s capacity?

The main hall has room for 10,250 concertgoers.

Did you see that Kylie Minogue has announced a free, intimate London gig in Septembe r?

The DJ and producer will kick off the dates by taking over London’s Alexandra Palace for four consecutive nights (September 4-8). From there, he will head out to the EU with stops in Berlin, Amsterdam and Brussels. The tour will then wrap up with a two-night residency at the Zéinth in Paris.

Before embarking on the tour, Fred Again.. is set to play this year’s Glastonbury Festival . He will be playing The Other Stage on Friday, June 23 at 8:30pm.

In a video posted to his official Instagram account announcing the tour, the DJ shared: “I do just wanna say that I do very much wanna come back to lots of other cities down the line. But right now, for the type of things I want to try with the show and musically, it made most sense to set up in one venue for more shows rather than moving about.”

Fans can sign-up for early access to pre-sale tickets here . Pre-sale will start on June 27 at 10am while general sale will be on June 27 at 12pm. Visit here for tickets.

Fred again.. 2023 UK/EU tour dates are:

SEPTEMBER 4 – London, UK, Alexandra Palace 5 – London, UK, Alexandra Palace 7 – London, UK, Alexandra Palace 8 – London, UK, Alexandra Palace 12 – Berlin, GER, Mercedes Benz Arena 14 – Amsterdam, NED, Ziggo Dome 15 – Amsterdam, NED, Ziggo Dome 16 – Brussels, BEL, Palais 12 20 – Paris, FRA, Zenith 21 – Paris, FRA, Zentih

In other Fred Again.. news, the artist recently worked on Romy’s latest solo album, serving as a producer for the xx member. Her latest single release, ‘Loveher’ was produced by him.

Fred Again

Last month, he released his collaboration album with Brian Eno titled ‘Secret Life’. In a three-star review of the LP , NME shared: “‘Secret Life’ sees him [Fred Again..] handbrake turn once again into ambient haze, assisted by the man who made it all happen for him. This surprise album – despite its frequent beauty – works best as a puzzle piece rather than a standout record in its own right.”

The DJ is also set to headline this year’s Electric Picnic Festival alongside Billie Ellish and The Killers . Eilish will top the bill at the Irish music and arts festival on Friday September 1, with Fred Again.. taking on Saturday September 2 and The Killers headlining Sunday September 3.

Fred Again whips up unstoppable mania for each one of his surprise shows. The British DJ will play at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night.

Fred Again: who is the DJ who has thousands queuing for a ‘secret rave’ at the Sydney Opera House?

On Tuesday morning the British DJ announced he will play a surprise show in Sydney – tonight. It has already sold out. Who is he and why do his fans love him so much?

  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Michael, Fred Again announced this morning that he is playing a surprise live show at the Sydney Opera House – tonight. After more than 120,000 people queued for tickets and he temporarily crashed the Opera House website, it has sold out. Tell me more about this guy – and is there any chance of getting a ticket to that show?

If you are asking this now, it’s already too late. Fred Again – whose real name is the extremely British Frederick John Philip Gibson – could be described as the Taylor Swift of the dance world: a musician and DJ who attracts fearsome love and scepticism in equal measure. He has been making music for a decade – first as a protege of Brian Eno, then as a songwriter for George Ezra and Rita Ora. But he really blew up during lockdowns with a trilogy of albums titled Actual Life, all of which feature samples from conversations with his friends and peers set to house-ish tracks.

Case in point: his breakout hit Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing), where fellow DJ The Blessed Madonna waxes lyrical about the communities forged on the dancefloor over synths. You may have heard it at the end of Triangle of Sadness.

Since then, Fred Again has exploded into public view. His “secret raves” in London and New York sold out within minutes; he often announces and performs these shows within hours of each other, and always on the same day. His Melbourne gig last year sold out in 3.4 seconds, according to ticket company Humanitix ; it would take me 3.4 seconds just to open Safari on my phone. Mind-boggling!

OK, 3.4 seconds is crazy. Do Australians love him in particular?

If there’s one thing about Australia it is that we are desperate babies who glom on to any artist who gives us the time of day. (See also: Pink). And Fred Again has more than provided: alongside his surprise Melbourne show last year, he also played a surprise Sydney set the same month alongside his previously announced appearances at Laneway festival and accompanying sideshows. At a show in Sydney’s Enmore theatre he told the audience that Australians were always in his DMs, which makes sense. (See above: desperate babies.)

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

If he’s so popular, why does he keep his shows secret? Why not give people more notice that he’s coming?

Because it is a very effective tactic. Obviously clandestine raves have existed as long as the fun police; if I had a dollar for every time I saw the phrase “secret warehouse location” I would probably have enough money for a Fred Again ticket. It helps him whip up an unstoppable mania for each one of his surprise shows. We might trace it back to 2022, when a series of listening parties for Actual Life 3 popped up at pubs around the world. Fans on his Discord channel – which has more than 26,000 members – were sent a link to the album a day before its release to host their own events, many cobbled together within hours.

A cynic could say that the secret shows give him a degree of street cred at odds with his massively mainstream popularity. Or, like this GQ profile says, you could argue there is a link between the spontaneity of his shows and the DIY nature of his music, which often draws from the lives of himself and those around him.

You mentioned Swift, who has a really intense fan following. What is Fred Again’s relationship with his fans like?

after newsletter promotion

To use your word: intense! Like Swift, he is particularly fond of dropping clues on social media. For example he has been hinting for the past 24 hours about coming to Australia. “We’re getting on a flight now and when we land, we’re gonna play some shows,” he wrote on his Instagram story on Monday, followed by many stories from airports and flights. The fans immediately began sniffing out the truth: one TikTok surmised Fred Again’s Australian destination based on a jar of Vegemite he posted earlier, and a commenter identified his flight as one operated by Qantas.

You can certainly see the joy in these Easter eggs: last January, one concertgoer in London said they were handed a USB containing unreleased Fred Again tracks and remixes by a mysterious member of the crowd who then vanished.

A month later, the DJ left Fred Again sweat towels around a Melbourne venue – and then posted the resulting mad rush and diabolical queues on TikTok.

The fans can get the clues wrong. In his Melbourne trip, he posted a series of whale emojis on Instagram, which made people rush to St Kilda’s Prince of Wales hotel thinking they had cracked the code to a secret gig. They were not only wrong (he was off somewhere watching penguins), but also now in St Kilda.

Basically, everyone is insane about him and you probably can’t get tickets to his show now, but thanks for playing.

Fred Again

Fred Again has done it again, selling out all six of his Australian arena shows within hours of the tour announcement.

The Grammy Award-winning British producer and artist this week set three-night stands at both Sydney’s 22,000-capacity Qudos Bank Arena and Melbourne’s 15,000-capacity Rod Laver Arena, and a pop-up show on the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Trending on Billboard

On Tuesday (Feb. 27), Fred broke news of a surprise performance at Sydney’s Opera House for that evening via his Instagram, and sold out it “emphatically,” say reps for TEG-affiliated Handsome Tours, with over 145,000 people queuing for less than 3,000 tickets. The one-off show at the Opera House’s Concert Hall set the record for the biggest on-sale demand for the iconic venue — a process that was completed within a 24-hour timeframe.

Off the back of that pop-up show, the full-scale tour announce which too has sold out. All dates will feature support from JOY (ANONYMOUS), who debuted new, unreleased music at Fred’s Sydney Opera House special.

Fred Again has a special — and deep — connection with Australian music fans.

He made his live debut here in January 2023, performing sets at Laneway Festival, selling-out headline shows, and unleashing surprise DJ pop-ups that reportedly sold-out in under 5 seconds, including a set at Sydney’s 5,500-capacity Hordern Pavilion. Last year, he was the most-played artist on triple j, the national youth-focused radio network, operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
