Burgdorf Hot Springs is one of the coolest things to do in Idaho year-round, but there’s something special about visiting in the winter season!

Because the access road (Warren Wagon Road (USFS Road #21) is not plowed or maintained in the winter, the hot springs resort is only accessible via snowmobile when there is snow on the ground.

You’ll need to rent a snowmobile for a few days and stay overnight in one of Burgdorf’s historic cabins. The cabins are heated by wood-fired stoves for a cozy experience, and guests get 24-hour access to the pools. It’s quite magical to soak under the stars!

New in 2022: Under new management, Burgdorf is allowing only cabin rental guests to visit the pools. Dates vary per year and bookings are limited! Keep checking their Facebook page to hear the latest updates, and news about day-use visitation openings in the future!

Depending on which lake you choose to visit, make sure to read up on the catch requirements and permits needed to go ice fishing.

Bear Lake in southeast Idaho is a popular destination for ice fishing, but we think Bead Lake juuustt over the North Idaho border into Washington is a great option as well. Other great ice-fishing lakes include Lake Cascade, Fernan Lake, and Twin Lakes.

FYI: Fat tire bikes are bikes that have four-inch wide (or more!) tires, almost double the size of regular bikes. This provides more stability over snowy terrain, but they are also used for riding across sand too!

You can find fat tire booking trails around Stanley, McCall, Sun Valley, and Schweitzer Mountain resort. You can also find an abundance of trails (aka hundreds of miles!) in southeastern Idaho’s Teton Valley.

Every local has their favorite place to shred, and a few Idaho ski resorts are a destination for skiers across the globe.

Sun Valley Resort is one such downhill destination. This laid-back mountain resort features over 2,000 skiable acres spread across two mountains. Including accommodations in nearby Ketchum , the resort also offers cozy places to stay warm on a long winter weekend.

Cross-country skiing in Idaho

The state's snowy landscapes lend to more than just downhill pursuits. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also prevalent in Idaho's snow-prone forests. Several trails are accessible from plowed Park N' Ski areas and within Idaho's snowy state parks. These cost-friendly ski areas are the best places to visit to take advantage of the long winter season.

Idaho has almost 20 Park N' Ski locations. A pass is required to leave a vehicle at these plowed parking areas, where miles of groomed trails branch into the adjacent forests. Park N' Ski locations touch every part of the state. While many sites lend to approximately five to 10 miles of trails, places like Banner Ridge Park N' Ski near Boise have over 20 miles to explore.

Many of the best state parks in Idaho offer groomed tracks in winter. Places like Ponderosa Pine and Farragut State Parks provide winding routes through wintry forests. These state parks also provide winter cabins for overnight adventures. Other state parks with cross-country ski trails include Priest Lake, Castle Rocks, and Lake Cascade .

Frenchmen's Bend Hot Springs in winter

Idaho has more hot springs than nearly every other state. The central mountainous region of the state offers several roadside soaking pools perfect for winter. The same region also offers commercial facilities with large soaking pools and places to stay the night.

For natural hot springs in Idaho , the region around Stanley has several soaking spots. Boatbox and Sunbeam Hot Springs are both east on the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, within 15 minutes of Stanley. These roadside hot springs are only a short hike from the highway. Snowy conditions can make the short jaunt slippery.

West on the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, places like Bonneville and Kirkham Hot Springs also offer ample shoulder room for winter soaking. These hot springs near Stanley receive steady crowds throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Come winter, expect some solitude amid the snowy landscape.

Three hot springs resorts surround McCall in Southwest Idaho. Zims, Burgdorf , and Gold Fork Hot Springs all offer big pools and indoor facilities to enjoy come winter. Visitors can drive to Gold Fork and Zims, but Burgdorf is only accessible by snowmobile this time of year. Visitors need to check local road conditions before traveling.

McCall Winter Carnival

Inspired by the Payette Lake Winter Games, first held in 1924, the annual Winter Carnival in McCall is a time-honored tradition. Tens of thousands of visitors pack McCall's streets towards the end of January for this community event that spans two weekends.

The carnival boasts over 100 unique events in 10 days, ranging from theater productions to fireworks over Payette Lake. A Mardi-Gras style parade is a popular event that always takes place on the first weekend of the carnival. And live music on the Main Stage provides an upbeat soundtrack to the festivities.

The Idaho State Snow Sculpting Championships is a signature event of the carnival. Professional artists come from across the world to strut their stuff and design unique snow sculptures. The massive sculptures remain on display throughout the length of the carnival.

Snow tubing in Idaho

Skiing and snowboarding aren't the only ways to enjoy quick elevation changes in Idaho. Tubing offers an alternative and more family-friendly way to enjoy the slopes. Tubing is also a much more affordable downhill activity.

Several commercial tubing destinations pop up in winter across the mountainous regions of the state. And, several ski resorts also offer dedicated tubing areas. For example, Hermit's Hollow Tubing Center at Schweitzer Mountain Resort provides two lanes of downhill tubing next to their chairlifts. Bogus Basin and Silver Mountain Resort also offer exciting downhill tubing courses.

Another tubing destination in the state is McCall Activity Barn at Brundage Mountain Resort . This popular family destination features six 800-foot tubing lanes. The Activity Barn also has a great network of groomed cross-country skiing trails. Fat bike rentals are also available.

Bald eagle on Lake Coeur d'Alene

Spawning kokanee salmon make their way to Lake Coeur D'Alene every winter between November and as late as February.

This natural migration also attracts bald eagles year after year, looking for a winter feast. Adding to this cycle are bird-watchers and interested observers with binoculars aimed at these magnificent birds of prey. It's one of the top things to do in Coeur d'Alene .

Higgins Point and Mineral Ridge are the best places to view Coeur d'Alene bald eagles in winter. These two high vantage points overlook either side of Wolf Lodge Bay . Higgins Point is the easiest to access without hiking.

It's important not to disturb these massive birds. Binoculars or telescopic lenses are the best ways to get a good view.

Idaho snowmobiling

Operating a snowmobile is a popular way to navigate Idaho's winter countryside. Thousands of miles of interconnected trails wind throughout the many elevations of the state. Avalanche education and awareness are vital for backcountry travel on a snowmobile in Idaho. Guided tours are also available through many of the state's mountain towns.

In eastern Idaho, Island Park is a popular snowmobile and winter destination. Several groomed trails tour this frosty white forest next to Yellowstone National Park .

Bear Lake is also a popular destination near the southeast corner of the state, with over 350 miles of groomed trails.

Priest Lake , in northern Idaho, also has a massive snowmobile trail system. Many who visit Priest Lake prefer the wide-open powder fields accessible from the 400 miles of groomed trails. Resorts at Priest Lake, like Elkins Resort , cater to snowmobile vacations with rentals, lodging, and a restaurant.

Winter day in Boise

The largest city in Idaho, Boise, continues to be a cultural hot spot throughout winter. The short days of winter don't shorten the number of things to do in Boise at this time of year, whether it's a hot meal from the city's growing culinary scene or live music at an entertainment venue.

Boise is also a great basecamp for nearby winter adventures and sightseeing. The entire Boise National Forest to the north is ripe with activities like downhill skiing and snowshoeing. Bogus Basin is a nearby community mountain in the forest, offering 2,600 acres of non-profit skiing.

Winter Garden aGlow is one can't-miss winter attraction in Boise. The Idaho Botanical Garden hosts this illuminated event between late November and early January. Over 500,000 energy-efficient bulbs transform the botanical space into a winter wonderland of lights and color.

Ice fishing in Idaho

A little winter doesn't stop Idaho anglers from getting outside. You will find popular lakes in Idaho to drill a hole and drop a line. Some high-elevation lakes freeze over by late fall, but most ice fishing in Idaho starts in December or January. Come this time of year, certain lakes and reservoirs are as busy as ever.

One popular destination, Horsethief Reservoir , is an ice-fishing favorite near Lake Cascade, two hours north of Boise. A plowed road leads anglers right to the snowy shoreline, and the frozen boat launch makes it easy to drive ATVs onto the ice when conditions allow. The reservoir teems with stocked rainbow trout that have healthy winter appetites.

Conditions change rapidly on all frozen bodies of water in Idaho. Check local conditions before heading out onto the ice.

Idaho yurt

Staying in a yurt is a quintessential Idaho winter experience. Backcountry huts and cabins also have the same effect.

Idaho State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service offer several remote accommodations to stoke a woodfire and spend the night. Some backcountry cabins and yurts require quite the hike to get to, while others are accessible with a high-clearance vehicle.

Idaho's national forests offer several winter cabins to spend the night. With nearly 90 in total, these primitive places vary in size and comfort. All available cabins in the winter feature heating, cookware, and a sense of solitude.

Idaho State Parks operates the popular Idaho City Ski Trails and Yurts , 90 minutes north of Boise. This system of groomed trails and six yurts offers an awesome winter getaway for all skiing abilities. Reservations for the winter huts are available nine months in advance.

Sun Valley Guides also operates a popular backcountry hut and yurt system near the mountain resort. This exploration company offers guided trips to six different huts within its network. These trips often include all-day backcountry skiing in the surrounding remote mountains.

Winter cruise on Lake Coeur d'Alene

Lake Coeur d'Alene, one of Idaho's best lakes , is a massive body of water at the southern end of the Panhandle. It's the central attraction of the city of the same name, and hosts water sports throughout the year. While summer is certainly the most popular, winter offers its own seasonal appeal with scenic boat rides.

Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises is the principal provider of scenic boat rides on the lake. Holiday light Shows, hot cocoa cruises, and eagle-watching expeditions fill their cruise calendar throughout the winter. Visitors are encouraged to wear warm layers for these seasonal adventures, which last anywhere between 40 minutes and two hours.

Idaho fireworks

Idaho offers plenty of scenic places to ring in the New Year. But, no celebration stacks up to the Idaho Potato Drop in front of the state capitol in Boise.

This year-end event features all-day enjoyment with live music, professional wrestling, and ice sculpture presentations. At the stroke of midnight, a giant potato drops from the sky and transforms into french fries to mark the new year.

Every city in Idaho celebrates the New Year with festivities. Idaho's many ski resorts are also known to put on quite the shindig at the end of the year. Alternatively, for a more intimate New Year's Eve experience, nothing brings people closer together than a remote cabin in the woods.

Holiday lights in Coeur d'Alene

Holiday light displays across the state make it easy to bask in the winter season. These professional arrangements are a surefire family favorite to visit. Alongside a colorful display, holiday light celebrations also serve as a lively beacon for the community to gather.

The Coeur d'Alene Resort Holiday Light Show is a favorite in northern Idaho. This shining spectacle features over a million lights adorning the intricate landscaping of the resort. Alongside the illumination, the resort also offers lighted cruises and fireworks over the water on the weekends.

The city of Caldwell , 30 miles west of Boise, also transforms into a bright winter getaway. Over a million downtown lights flicker in Caldwell at the end of November. This illuminating event kicks off with a Winter Wonderland Carnival . Special happenings at the carnival include street performances, live music, and ice skating.

The Idaho Botanical Garden on Old Penitentiary Road also puts on a show for lighted attractions in Boise. Winter Garden aGlow transforms this botanical space from late November to early January with over 500,000 lights.

Dog sledding

For some athletes in Idaho, winter is dog sledding season. The state hosts several competitive races throughout the season and throughout its varied winter landscapes.

The Idaho Sled Dog Challenge , near McCall, is perhaps the biggest of these four-legged events, occurring every year near late January. This multi-day event offers three different races, including a signature 300-mile race and Iditarod qualifier.

Best Things To Do In Idaho In The Winter: Ski, Soak, and Sip

This post is sponsored by  Visit Idaho .

What are the best things to do in Idaho in the winter? In my opinion, it’s all about playing outside  in the snow and then warming up with a soak in a hot spring, followed by a local beer and tasty food.

Fortunately there are a plethora of family-friendly winter activities in Idaho.

Idaho is known for the bigger winter destinations, including Sun Valley, McCall, and Boise.

We like to do things a little off the beaten path, so we searched out the places to visit in Idaho in winter that are less known by tourists.

Family standing by "Welcome to Idaho" sign on an Idaho winter road trip

We visited a National Monument, two downhill ski areas, a Nordic Center, hot springs, breweries, and more on a five-day road trip around south-central and eastern Idaho. I think we found some of the best places to in Idaho during any season, but especially in winter.

See this post on hot springs in Idaho for more soaking options in the Gem State.

You can use our itinerary when you visit Idaho or take pieces of it to create your own list of Idaho best places to visit.

cross country skiing in Craters of the Moon visiting in winter

When we were deciding which things to see in Idaho on this trip, Craters of the Moon had to be at the top of the list.

And when we visit Craters, we always stop at Pickle’s Place in Arco on the way through. There isn’t anywhere other than Arco to get food around the National Monument and we love their fried pickles, veggie burgers, and other diner food. It sounds strange, but I like to include it in what to see in Idaho.

After our ski we drove to Twin Falls to spend the night. Again, there isn’t a lot around Craters of the Moon — that’s one of the reasons we love it — so you will probably want to find lodging in Twin Falls or Idaho Falls.

  • Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

We’ve visited Craters of the Moon in every season except winter. I’ve seen pictures of the lava fields covered in snow and was itching to cross-country ski its groomed trails.

The loop road through Craters is closed to vehicles in winter, but open to skiers and snowshoers. There are about 9 miles of groomed ski trail/road. The rangers recommend skiing it clockwise to avoid going down a steep hill. You can also telemark ski on the volcanic slopes of the cinder cones.

We skied to Devil’s Orchard as a family. It’s 1.8 miles each way and a short, scenic trip for those without the motivation to go farther. From there, I skied the rest of the loop while Henry and the kids returned to the visitor center.

It was super fun and met my all my expectations. I highly recommend skiing the loop. It is about 6 miles total, including the Devil’s Orchard section, but not the trail to the Tree Molds (that’s another 3 miles).

If you don’t have skis, you can rent snowshoes at the visitor center for $5. Free guided snowshoe walks take place in January and February. The visitor center is open 8 am – 4:30 pm in winter and the Monument is free to enter during winter.

Tent camping is allowed in the campground in the Monument, as is backcountry camping with a permit.

Twin Falls

When you are thinking about Twin Falls, Idaho, what to do may not be immediately apparent. With a little research we discovered a bunch of things to do in Twin Falls, starting with checking out a couple breweries. There are a lot of craft breweries in Idaho, so I wasn’t surprised to find two in Twin Falls.

breweries in Twin Falls Idaho, Milner's Gate

Both Idaho breweries are family-friendly and everyone can find something good to eat while the adults taste local craft beers.

The first night we ate at Milner’s Gate, one of the fun places to go in Idaho. The atmosphere is industrial/cozy. I don’t know if that’s a proper description, but I am going with it.

Henry and I sipped our beers by the fireplace (I recommend the Idahop IPA) while the kids played cards at the table. Everything we ordered was great, but we especially recommend the butternut squash ravioli (Anders’ pick) and the try-tip ramen bowl (without the tri-tip for me).

  • Milner’s Gate

Fairfield Inn and Suites

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott . It was clean, modern, comfortable, and well located. Plus, complimentary breakfast got us going in the morning.

Idaho Winter Itinerary Day Two

  • Stay: Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott

Things to do in idaho Shoshone Falls State Park Twin Falls

We started day two with a walk along the Canyon Rim Trails and the Centennial Trail. There are a couple places to access these trails. Seeing the dramatic Snake River Canyon, waterfalls, and adrenaline junkies, is one of the fun things to do in Idaho. We added this to our itinerary, even though it doesn’t involve skiing, soaking, or sipping (unless you count drinking from our water bottles).

Stop for lunch at Elevation 486 and enjoy panoramic views of the Snake River Canyon or picnic outside Miracle Hot Springs, like we did.

We finished the day at another brewery and spent the night at the Fairfield Inn again.

Snake River Canyon

The Canyon Rim Trails start near the Twin Falls Visitor Center and can take you all the way to Shoshone Falls if you want to make the trek into the Snake River Canyon. Along the way, you can look for base jumpers leaping off the Perrine Bridge, views of the canyon, Pillar Falls, and the site where Evel Knievel attempted to jump across the Snake River Canyon on a steam-powered rocket.

Overlooking the Snake River at Shoshone Falls State Park, Twin Falls Idaho

We started at Shoshone Falls Park and followed the Centennial Trail along the rim of the canyon 1.5 miles to the Evel Knievel jump site. The falls are a mere trickle in winter, but in spring it’s known as the “Niagara Falls of the West” thanks to the vast amounts of water plummeting over cliffs. The geologic features are stunning with or without water.

This is one of the Idaho places to visit that we’d like to come back to. Like Craters of the Moon, each season offers different views and various splendors.

Parking is free in both places in winter.

  • Twin Falls Visitor Center , Shoshone Falls

Miracle and Banbury Hot Springs

Miracle and Banbury Hot Springs are in in Buhl, about a 40 minute drive from Twin Falls. Either one makes a perfect addition to an Idaho winter trip. I think hot springs are a must see in Idaho (a must soak?) as there are more accessible hot springs here than any other state.

We soaked in Miracle Hot Springs and stopped at Banbury Hot Springs on the way back to Twin Falls to see what it was all about. Read more about Idaho hot springs .

Miracle Hot Springs near Twin Falls

Miracle quickly became one of our favorite hot springs in Idaho thanks to its clean pools and private soaking tubs. There are four big pools and several “VIP rooms,” which are small changing rooms with a little tub that four people can fit in. They also have a couple bigger private tubs.

We moved between the four public pools, including one covered pool, and our private pool. The hot water was amazing.

If you are so motivated, you can tent or RV camp, or rent a geo-dome for glamping.

Banbury Hot Springs is owned by the same people and about a six minute drive from Miracle. It’s situated on the banks of the Snake River and also has a campground. Banbury was less crowded when we stopped by and had a huge log floating in the middle of the pool. I guess you can hang on it to stay afloat. Or maybe you try to run on it, as they do lumberjack competitions.

Banbury Hot Springs Twin Falls

As part of our things to do in southern Idaho agenda, we will be back soon to soak in Banbury and check out nearby Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument and Ritter Island State Park.

  • Miracle and Banbury Hot Springs

Koto Brewery

Back in Twin Falls, we found out that another traveling family, our good friends from Let’s Travel Family were just back from southeast Asia and passing through Twin Falls. We all met up at the Koto Brewery for dinner.

Kyoto Brewery beer tasting in Idaho

The six kids loved playing foosball, while Henry and I enjoyed a tasting flight of beers and we all ate. My favorite beer was the West Coast IPA and popular meals included blackened salmon tacos (me), beef ribs (Jill and Tony), and the rice bowl (Anders).

  • Koto Brewery

Idaho Winter Itinerary Day Three

  • Ski: Pomerelle Mountain Resort
  • Sip & Sup: Portneuf Valley Brewing
  • Stay: Holiday Inn Express

Winter getaways in Idaho need to include downhill skiing, right? For our third day we checked out some of the best Idaho snow at Pomerelle Mountain Resort.

Then it was on to Pocatello for dinner and two night’s stay.

skiing in Idaho at Pomerlle

Pomerelle Mountain Resort

Pomerelle is about halfway between Twin Falls and Pocatello and tucked back in the Albion Mountains. As intermediate skiers, this ski area suit us perfectly.

Pomerelle Mountain Resort caters to beginning skiers/snowboarders and families. The runs are wide and gentle. Even the black diamond (most difficult) runs were pretty manageable, and I am an intermediate skier.

We appreciated the emphasis on learning to ski or snowboard and having fun on the hill. Anders and Finn took a lesson and skied away better than they started. We think it’s so important to learn the right form and skills as they progress. Spending time perfecting the basics now will make them much better, and safer, skiers in the long run.

learning to ski at Pomerlle in Idaho

Because Pomerelle sits at 8,000 feet, the snow comes earlier and stays later than some of the other resorts in the area. Even during a dry winter, the snow was pretty great.

We found 24 expertly groomed slopes, two terrain parks, and a vertical drop of 1,000 feet, serviced by two triple chairlifts and the 450’ Magic Carpet beginners lift.

Days like we had at Pomerelle make me really like skiing. Whenever I think of Idaho things to do in winter, this will be one of the first things to come mind.

  • Pomerelle Mountain Resort

Portneuf Valley Brewing

Once again we answered the question, “What to do in Idaho?” with “beer tasting and dinner.”

This family brew pub is owned by beer mistress Penny Pink. She’s been brewing beer since 1996 and the brewery is now in a cool old building that was once home to the East Idaho Brewing Company.

Portneuf Idaho craft brewery

As usual, I leaned toward the IPA, here called Grog. For food choices, we went with a California Dreaming pizza that we all enjoyed. Portneuf Valley Brewing

Holiday Inn Express

We spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Pocatello . It’s our second time staying there and we love the view from the top of the hill. The new hotel looks good and has a great lounge for hanging out or working in.

We got the family suite, which is two connected rooms (no door between them). One room had a king bed and the other had a bunk bed. Both had TVs and the kids’ room had an X-Box, much to the delight of Finn and Anders.

Idaho Winter Itinerary Day Four

  • Ski: Kelly Canyon Ski Resort

We had a leisurely morning at the hotel, working and playing X-Box games, since Kelly Canyon doesn’t open until 12:30, but you could do one of the other fun things to do in Pocatello .

Kelly Canyon is closer to Idaho Falls than Pocatello, but since we wanted to do other things near Pocatello it made more sense for us to stay there. It makes for a perfect Idaho Falls winter excursion, if you choose to stay there.

After our ski, we stopped at a hot spring resort we noticed on the way in and learned a lesson in always being prepared.

riding the lift at Kelly Canyon ski area in Idaho

  • Kelly Canyon Ski Resort

Because of its proximity to Rexburg, home of a university, and Idaho Falls, Kelly Canyon is one of the more popular things to do in eastern Idaho. That said, it wasn’t crowded at all on the Thursday we visited.

Kelly Canyon offers a variety of terrain for all ability levels. Four double chairs and one surface lift service 688 skiable acres and 1,000 feet of vertical drop. The slopes are rated 35% easiest, 45% more difficult, and 20% most difficult.

Like Pomerlle, there is a family-friendly atmosphere at Kelly Canyon and the views from the top were outstanding.

They don’t open until the afternoon during the week, and are closed on Sundays, but they offer night skiing on two-thirds of the 51 runs until 9:30 pm.

In addition to alpine skiing, they offer trails for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking.

Kelly Canyon Idaho Ski

Heise Hot Springs Resort

On the way down the hill from Kelly Canyon, we stopped at Heise Pizza for dinner. While not a brewery, they have several craft brews on tap and in bottles.

The homey atmosphere is complete with a friendly cat on the deck and huge wood stove in the middle of the room. There is a game room downstairs. We scarfed down two yummy large pizzas before driving back to Pocatello.

The hot springs are adjacent to the pizza place. In a total rookie move, we left our swimsuits at the hotel and didn’t get to soak. You, however, should take a dip and tell me about it in the comments. It looks quite inviting.

Heise Hot Springs Resort

Holiday Inn Express and Suites

We spent another night at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Pocatello .

Idaho Winter Itinerary Day Five

  • Soak: Lava Hot Springs

One of the fun things to do in Pocatello, Idaho I have been wanting to check out is the cross-country ski trails in the Mink Creek area. That’s how we started our final day of our winter adventure road trip.

A hot spring should always follow a ski, so I recommend a stop at Lava Hot Springs on your way out of town.

cross country skiing near Pocatello

East Fork Mink Creek Nordic Center

As we wound our way up the Mink Creek drainage, it was hard to believe we were only seven miles from Pocatello – it seems like another, wilder world. This is one of the really lovely places to see in Idaho with aspen groves, conifer stands, and open sagebrush meadows.

East Fork Mink Creek Nordic Center has about 20 kilometers of groomed classic and skate cross-country ski trails, snowshoe trails, a sledding hill, a warming yurt, plus ski and snowshoe rentals and lessons.

The terrain varies from flat trails along the creek to hills as you ski into the mountains. Since there are many loops and cutoffs, you can create whatever distance and type of ski tour you want.

Cross-country skiing is our family’s go-to winter sport and we loved checking out this area. The skiers of Pocatello are lucky to have this in their backyard. East Fork Mink Creek Nordic Center

Lava Hot Springs

If you look up where to go in Idaho, no doubt Lave Hot Springs will come up. It’s definitely one of the most well known hot springs in a state full of hot water.

The town of Lava Hot Springs is built around tourism to the mineral pools. There are restaurants, bars, hotels, campgrounds, souvenir shops, and sunken gardens.

There are both indoor and outdoor hot springs pools open in winter. Lava Hot Springs has a whole complex of pools from a kiddie pool to soaking tubs.

Lava Hot Springs

Heading Home

That was it for us. We had a wonderful time playing in the snow and hot water as a family. As the kids get older it hits me more and more that they won’t be living with us forever. It won’t be long before they have their own stuff going on and won’t be available for these kids of trips.

Thanks to Visit Idaho for hosting us and giving us to opportunity to be together in a gorgeous setting.

Snowmobiling

The Trinities Mountains and the area around Fairfield offer miles and miles of snowmobiling possibilities. If you’re looking for things to do in Twin Falls, the Diamondfield Jack area south of the city has more than 200 miles of groomed and marked trails of Sawtooth National Forest and Bureau of Land Management land. The trails are easily accessible by I-84. Mount Harrison, located near Pomerelle Ski Resort and accessed by Howell Canyon, features incredible panoramic views of the valley below and reliably deep powder. Of course, you can always go off-trail — there are plenty of places to play along all those groomed trails! But don’t worry about competing for space: Only 3,500 snowmobiles are registered in Southern Idaho each year, which means you’ll have plenty of room to roam.

Chasing Powder at Pomerelle

Pomerelle regularly racks up tons of powder thanks to its location in the Sawtooth National Forest and its especially high elevation: 8,000 feet at the base with a vertical drop of 1,000 feet. The area is graced with snowstorms from California and Utah that bring deep snow—around 500 inches annually—to 24 slopes. In other words: Awesome skiing. We think you’ll be as fascinated about these ancient rock outcroppings as they were. Bonus: You can stay overnight at the Lodge at Castle Rock Ranch, a cabin at the state park, or even a yurt ! The century-old lodge has WiFi, wide-screen TVs, multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen, and sleeps up to eight people.

Top 15 Places to Visit in Idaho: Bucket List Destinations

The state of Idaho didn’t impress me with its bucket list destinations at first. I spent hours upon hours reading articles that promised to satisfy my wanderlust and show the best places to visit in Idaho. Unquestionably, there were plenty of interesting destinations. From quintessential cities and towns to striking remote areas, the state assured an amplitude of thrilling adventures and cultural treasures. None of these places, however, inspired me to visit Idaho right away.

Outdoor things to do in Twin Falls, Idaho - Roads and Destinations, roadsanddestinations.com

Things certainly changed. As much as wanted to credit those articles for providing me with an extended list of the top places to visit in Idaho, the state itself did the job. It eagerly unrolled its diverse landscapes, never eluding its hidden gems and constantly impressing with its impeccable destinations.

When we started our road trip from Boise to Yellowstone and drove across southern section of the state, the area looked rather plain. Southeastern Idaho, however, looked completely different. It reminded us of rolling hills and mountainous rural regions of Switzerland .

Apparently, I was wrong. There was a myriad of incredible places to visit in Idaho. The Gem State clearly showed what I already knew. Pictures not always do justice to real destinations. In case of Idaho, you need to get outside and visit its abundant cities and explore its secluded rural places before making any decisions.

Bucket List Destinations: The Best Places to Visit in Idaho

Yet I have contradicted myself and compiled the list of the top places to visit in Idaho. For some, it might be enough to embark on their own adventures of exploring the vast roads and bountiful destinations of the Gem State. Others might need to visit all these remarkable places before falling in love with Idaho just like I did. Regardless of which category of the travelers you fall into, use these top 15 places to visit in Idaho as your guideline. Furthermore, feel free to add your own bucket list destinations if for some reasons I left them out.

1. Top Places to Visit in Idaho: Boise

Surprisingly, I didn’t even insist on exploring Boise through and through. With so many places we hoped to visit in Idaho, it looked like we wouldn’t have time to experience its capital. It was a mistake. Boise turned out to be an irresistible must-see destination.

Being the capital, Boise is the largest city and one of the most popular places to visit in Idaho. Set on the Boise River, it dazzles with a compelling blend of cultural and natural attractions. The “City of Trees” is what locals nickname their capital. Indeed, the presence of large green spaces in the area complies with Idaho’s drive to keep its residents active, healthy, and as close to nature as possible. For that reason, Boise’s ample parks brimmed with hiking and biking trails allow to escape the bustling city in the blink of an eye.

Impeccable food scene is another reason to add Boise to the list of the top places to visit in Idaho. From authentic Northwestern culinary traditions to mouthwatering dishes from European cuisines, the city allures gourmands from all regions. Interestingly, the travelers compare the capital of Idaho to Portland and Seattle , two of the best places to visit in the United States for foodies.

2. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

The Gem State boasts an array of unique destinations that none of the other states has. Craters of the Moon certainly joins their ranks and falls into the category of the best places to visit in Idaho. Formed by molten lava fields approximately 15 million years ago, the area maintains its preternatural moon-like terrain up to this day. Exploring this wondrous bucket list destination feels like landing on another planet, a place that only a few daring travelers and locals of Idaho risk to visit.

Craters of the Moon occupies nearly 53,500 acres filled with volcanic formations and lava flows. The national preserve in the Snake River Plain was created on May 2, 1924. Despite its, what it looks like, barren terrain, the region is packed with wildlife . Foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, owls, bats, and other small desert rodents thrive in this strange environment, occasionally surprising the human visitors with their presence.

As one of the most intriguing places to visit in Idaho, Craters of the Moon surely knows how to keep their guests’ attention. The area offers a few epic trails that let you further explore the terrain and even see a few underground lava tubes . A permit for this activity, however, it required. You can get one free of charge at the visitor center located near the entrance.

3. Places to Visit in Idaho: Shoshone Falls

While reading all those detailed articles, I couldn’t not notice one natural gem. It looked like the majority of the travelers and locals agreed that Shoshone Falls was one of the must-visit places in Idaho. Gigantic, stupendous, awe-inspiring… I could see why they thought so. I must admit Shoshone Falls became one of my favorite places to explore in Idaho as well.

The famous waterfall sits on the outskirts of Twin Falls. Being the largest natural fall in the area, it makes not only Idaho, but the whole country proud. The size of the waterfall undisputedly sets it apart from other remarkable places one should visit in the state of Idaho. At 212 feet tall, Shoshone Falls is even higher than world-famous Niagara Falls. Taking this into account, the locals refer to their natural wonder as the “Niagara of the West” .

You can visit Shoshone Falls in southern Idaho all year round. The dam-controlled waterfall, however, changes its flow depending on the season. So, spring is the best time to appreciate the natural beauty of the site. Fueled by melted snow and rain, Shoshone Falls restores all its power by this time. The waterfall looks significantly thinner and fragile in fall. But even at this time, one of the most famous places in Idaho is as stunning as ever, proving that it’s worth a visit again and again.

4. Thousand Springs State Park

One of the most gorgeous places in Idaho sits in the Magic Valley and enhances each and every visit to the area with panoramic views and ample outdoor adventures. The area was created in 2005, combining a few small parks that together form Thousands Springs State Park. As the name suggests, springs, streams, and waterfalls reign in this part of southern Idaho.

The park encompasses 7 sections that sit a short drive from each other. Each of the unites of Thousand Springs State Park brings something new, irresistible, and enticing. Whether you visit the iconic Oregon Trail or explore scenic hikes at splendid Malad Gorge , the area is eager to impress with the most magnificent places in Idaho.

Those who long for different kinds of activities, should saddle a horse in an indoor arena at Billingsley Creek . Ritter Island invites you to tour its historic agriculture structures while Crystal Springs Lake wins the hears of all fishing enthusiasts. The best views and the most incredible places to visit in this section of Idaho yet hide in Niagara Springs State Park . Housing the 350-foot-deep Snake River Canyon, the area astounds with picturesque streams and secluded sites.

5. Places to Visit in Idaho: Soda Springs

Idaho is dotted with small towns that offer the most extraordinary places to visit in the region. Soda Springs is certainly one of them. Often overlooked by the majority of the travelers, the place has long won approval of the locals. The main attraction here is Soda Springs , the world’s only captive geyser. For the local population, though, is not just another hydrothermal feature. It’s their pride and honor, their own “Old Faithful”.

The geyser was discover by accident when drilling for a pool in the late 1930s. The natural wonder has been captured and timed since then. Today, Soda Springs is one of the most unique and lesser-known places you can ever visit in Idaho. The geyser erupts approximately every hour and reaches heights up to 100 feet.

Apart from the predictable geyser in southeastern Idaho, the city’s guests enjoy soaking in natural hot springs at Octagon Springs Park and visit the historical Pioneer Museum .

6. Idaho’s Bucket List Destinations: Bruneau Dunes State Park

Idaho tests your tolerance for risky adventures by offering to visit some of the most unusual places one can find in the country. After the moon-like terrain of Craters of the Moon, the state surprises you with its deserted landscape. It’s up to you to give this area a try or venture to the next Idaho’s bucket list destination.

For those who decide to explore another unique terrain, Bruneau Dunes State Park prepares a wide range of daring adventures. The place is known for the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America . The famous landmark rises 470 feet above the desert floor. Apart from this remarkable natural wonder, the park prides itself on having one of the longest camping seasons in Idaho .

Things to Do in Bruneau Dunes State Park

Threatening at first glance, the irresistible desert invites you to climb its sandy mountains. Hiking, horseback riding along with swimming and fishing at the foot of the dunes is another fun way to visit one of the most astounding places in Idaho. Stars also seem to look down at Bruneau Dunes State Park. You can get a closer look at these shining dots above the dunes at Bruneau Dunes Observatory .

7. Places to Visit in Idaho: Twin Falls

Home to Shoshone Falls, Twin Falls deserves its own spot among the best places to visit in Idaho. The city is small, but the amount of natural and cultural attractions it offers greatly exceeds its size. From paddling the Snake River to BASE jumping and chasing waterfall , the city keeps you on your toes. Every corner of Twin Falls brims with local treasures and unique places one must visit when traveling through southern Idaho.

After the Snake River, the Snake River Canyon is the main landmark of the city. Spreading over 50 miles, the gorge connects Twin Falls and Jerome Counties and offers bountiful outdoor adventures and panoramic views.

The 0.25-mile-wide canyon has long served as a source of inspiration for local daredevils. So in 1974, Evel Knievel attempted to “jump” across the Snake River from a dirt ramp on the canyon wall. Although the stunt wasn’t successful, Twin Falls still remembers this brave man and keeps his legacy alive. The dirt ramp, now called Evel Knievel Jump Site , belongs to the most interesting places to visit in southern Idaho.

8. Lake Coeur d’Alene

Lake Coeur d’Alene might skip the thrilling adventures typical for the desert and moon-like terrains. Yet, the area is rightfully included in the list of the most stunning places to visit in Idaho. The natural dam-controlled lake nestles in the northern region of the state. Spanning 25 miles in length, it boasts more than 100 miles of shoreline. This extended area, in its turn, entices with ample parks, campgrounds, beaches, and trails.

The second largest lake in North Idaho , Lake Coeur d’Alene takes your breath away with its remarkable scenery. Surrounded by majestic mountains, it dismisses any doubts one might have when deciding whether to add this area to his or her Idaho itinerary.

Things to Visit in Idaho: Lake City

The pristine location allures the locals as well. With time, one of the largest cities in Idaho was established on the shore of the lake. The state’s residents refer to it as the “Lake City ”. The area houses an array of sandy beaches, hiking trails, and volleyball courts. Several companies offer watercraft rentals, enabling beachgoers to paddle or jet ski . One of the most stunning places in Idaho also caters to non-adventurous travelers, inviting them to visit its shores and book a tour boat cruise .

From November through February, you can observe bald eagles, migrating to the lake to feed on salmon in Wolf Lodge Bay. Swans, ducks, and geese flock to the area in spring and summer.

9. Places to Visit in Idaho: Idaho Falls

A few things set Idaho Falls apart from other astounding places to visit in the state. While city’s rich cultural heritage allures many locals and travelers alike, 600-foot-wide waterfall on the Snake River is always the center of attention. Hiking and biking trails along the Idaho Falls Greenbelt further introduce the guests to city’s green spaces, downtown, market, and the famous waterfall.

Art and history enthusiasts look for inspiration at the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and the Willard Arts Center . The Pavilion for Japanese Art unveils secrets behind Japanese gardening traditions while the Idaho Falls Zoo invites to meet some of local inhabitants.

10. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

Another remarkable attraction on our list of the top places to visit in Idaho occupies northeastern Oregon and western Idaho. The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is known as the deepest river gorge in North America . Spanning 125 miles, the place offers endless adventures along with astounding natural wonders. From scenic vistas to splendid mountain peaks and secluded areas for hiking and horseback riding, the Hells Canyon is truly one of the most remarkable places you can visit in Idaho.

The popular activity in the canyon is hiking . A myriad of scenic trails, ranging from easy to moderate, wind the area. The major trailheads are located near Riggins, Idaho. Here you can find the Heaven’s Gate Trailhead, Snake River Trailhead, Black Lake Campground, Windy Saddle Trailhead, and Windy Saddle Horse Camp.

Places to Visit in Idaho: Seven Devils Mountains

The Snake River is responsible for the distinctive terrain and unique shapes of the Hells Canyon. While you can visit lower elevation on the Idaho side and be stunned by its rather barren and steep places, the high country completely transforms itself. Alpine lakes and towering peaks of the Seven Devils Mountains reside here.

The legend has it that the mountain range was named for a vision of seven dancing devils that appeared to a strayed Native American. At 9,000 feet above sea level, the mountains could indeed look like otherworldly creatures. Even their names, “He Devil”, “She Devil”, and “Twin Imps”, imply the mystical origin of this Idaho’s bucket list destination.

Places to Visit in Idaho: Hells Canyon Scenic Byway

Luckily, Idaho doesn’t push you to visit and explore its remote places on foot or by riding a horse. The visitors are welcome to drive the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway and admire the remarkable scenery from the convenience of their cars. The 213-mile loop runs through both Idaho and Oregon, presenting epic mountains, canyon, and small towns.

Last but not least, the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area surprises the daring visitors with whitewater rafting. It might be dangerous, but the thrill and adrenaline rush are guaranteed.

11. Yellowstone National Park

Similar to Montana, Idaho owns only a small section of world-famous Yellowstone National Park. The rest of the unique territory sits in Wyoming. The locals, however, agree that Yellowstone must top the list of the best places to visit in Idaho.

Yellowstone National Park is unlike any other bucket list destinations. Known for its hydrothermal features such as geysers and hot springs, the place entices nearly four million visitors from all over the world. The highlights of the park are Old Faithful , one of the most predictable geysers in Yellowstone, and Grand Prismatic Spring . The latter has gained its fame as the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest hot spring in the world.

12. Places to Visit in Idaho: Sandpoint

We were debating on whether to add Sandpoint to this list of the top places to visit in Idaho. The place nestles between 3 mountain ranges on Lake Pend Oreille and the foot of Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Famous for its year-round events, the city astounds with its rich cultural heritage, authentic shops, and culinary scene.

Each season brings its own unique activities to this beautiful place in northern Idaho. 14. Lesser-Known Places to Visit in Idaho: Driggs

While the majority of the tourists visit Jackson to admire majestic mountains and explore many other places in Grand Teton National Park , Driggs, a small town in eastern Idaho, enables you to enjoy the scenic views without the maddening crowds.

The city sits in Teton County, about 25 miles from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With less than 2,000 residents, the place is rather small. Nevertheless, it never ceases to offer quite an impressive amount of things to do and Idaho’s bucket list destinations to tick off. From backpacking to fishing and rafting on the Teton River, Driggs knows how to keep its visitors busy.

Cinema lovers should definitely check out the Spud Drive-In Theater where time seems to stop and movies are still projected onto a large outdoor screen. For a change of scenery, head to Mesa Falls , located about one hour north of Driggs.

15. Best Places to Visit in Idaho: Kirkham Hot Springs

Idaho is one of the best places to visit in the United States to soak in hot springs. The Gem State has approximately 130 mineral pools, which is more than any other state. The natural springs adorn Idaho’s remote regions as well as roadside areas.

The Kirkham Hot Springs , though, is one of the most popular natural hot springs in the state. The place consists of several soaking pools and small streaming waterfalls at the bottom of a wooden staircase. A campground with parking sits near the site, allowing for convenient experience.

You can access the Kirkham Hot Springs via the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway running through the Boise National Forest. This Idaho’s bucket list destination is open all year round and usually gets busy on weekends especially in the summer months.

Sitting on the shores of glacier-formed Payette Lake in the Cascade Mountains, McCall Idaho is one of my favorite mountain towns in the West. Between the gorgeous forested landscapes, four seasons of outdoor recreation, and the unpretentious vibe, I’ve considered moving here more than once, especially for the hard-to-beat McCall, Idaho winters.

McCall is home to two ski resorts, over 500 miles of groomed snowmobile and Nordic trails, hot springs, and good beer to boot. You want in, don’t you? BFT’s Director, Linda, and I spent 4 days in McCall experiencing the best that winter has to offer.

In this post, I share a day-by-day McCall, Idaho winter itinerary to help you plan the perfect snowy winter wonderland getaway.

Mccall winter highlights video.

Watch my 2 minute YouTube video that captures the highlights in this McCall Idaho winter itinerary and see how beautiful it really is.

Getting to McCall, Idaho

McCall is located two hours north of Boise along highway 95. The scenic drive follows the Payette River, which is the training ground for some of the world’s best whitewater kayakers during the summer and is absolutely gorgeous in the winter.

The easiest way to get to McCall is to fly into the Boise Airport (BOI) and rent a car. If you visit McCall, Idaho in winter, you should consider springing for an SUV rental that can handle any snow or ice you might hit on the drive.

While I do recommend having your own car, if you aren’t comfortable driving, contact Sawtooth Transit , which provides a fee-based shuttle service from the Boise Airport to McCall. Once you are in McCall, the town offers free public transportation, which you can flag down anywhere on the established route, and there is also a shuttle that runs a few times a day to and from Brundage Ski Resort during the busy winter season.

4-Day McCall, Idaho Winter Itinerary

Day 1: boise to mccall.

Catch an early flight to Boise in order to make the most of your first day. The twisty road to McCall hugs the Payette River and I recommend doing the drive in daylight so you can enjoy the view and see where you are going! The drive will be much more enjoyable that way.

I’d suggest grabbing a sandwich or a quick bite in Boise before you head up so you can jump right into the action. Uncle Giuseppe’s Italian deli is a good option right before you turn up Highway 95.

Jug Mountain Ranch

The first stop on your McCall, Idaho winter itinerary is Jug Mountain Ranch, which is just a smidgeon south of McCall.

Jug Mountain Ranch is a privately owned community but they have an extensive free trail system open to the public year-round. Whether you are a beginner mountain biker out to enjoy the smooth-rolling singletrack or an expert looking for technical features and fast downhill terrain, Jug Mountain Ranch has something for everyone, even in the winter.

During the snowy months, Jug Mountain Ranch grooms the trails for fat biking, which is basically mountain biking with big, beefy tires that provide traction on the snow. It was my first time trying fat biking and it was a blast cruising through the ponderosa forest with views of the valley. What’s even better is Jug Mountain’s trail system is dog-friendly, which is awesome for those of you who want to road trip with your dog .

The Jug Mountain Pro Shop rents fat bikes that will provide maximum efficiency on the trails.

Jug Mountain’s trails are great for winter hiking , snowshoeing , and nordic skiing as well.

Where to Stay

The Shore Lodge is an option and if you visit mid-week outside of holiday weekends you can get a pretty good deal on a room. However, McCall also has countless condos and cabins for rent that are especially suitable for groups. You might even score one with a lakefront view.

We stayed at McCall’s Park Street Penthouse which was conveniently located a block from the center of McCall.

Day 2: Tamarack Ski Resort

It’s time to hit the slopes! McCall has two ski resorts to choose from: Brundage and Tamarack. Both have ample terrain and a mom-and-pop feel, so you can’t go wrong with either. For the best views, I recommend Tamarack which is located just a few minutes south on the highway.

The first thing I noticed when we pulled into Tamarack was the fact that there were only about 20 cars in the parking lot. Score! Lift tickets are also relatively cheap and they have a rental shop on-site, making your day on the slopes as easy as it gets.

The mountain was impressive too. Two days after a big storm there was still tons of fresh powder to be had. While most resorts get quickly skied out these days, I couldn’t believe how much untracked snow we found at Tamarack, and with 2,800 vertical feet, the mountain offers plenty of terrain to explore.

For those that prefer to stay on trail, the wide groomers were smooth and offered something for every skill level.

Where to Eat

There are several places to grab lunch at Tamarack. For weekend visitors, the Mile High Catina is the place to be. While they were closed during our visit, word on the street is that you can get three street tacos and a beer for $11.

Other places to eat at Tamarack include The Reserve which is open daily and Clear Water Coffee where you can get a cup of joe and baked goods or a sandwich.

Once your day of skiing is over, make the short drive up to McCall. For dinner, head to the Shore Lodge , one of the classiest joints in town. In fact, it’s so classy that it was recently named the third best resort in the US by Conde Nast Traveler.

But no need to dress up for dinner, the Cutwater Grill offers a casual-ish menu and delectable cocktails with views of Payette Lake.

Day 3: Snowmobiling & Hot Springs

Get ready for quintessential McCall, Idaho winter activities: Snowmobiling and hot springs! Each are fun on their own, but combining these two classic McCall winter activities is even better.

Burgdorf Hot Springs opened its doors in 1870 after geothermal water was discovered by local miners. Lucky for us because Burgdorf is one of the coolest hot springs resorts I’ve ever been to! Located thirty miles from McCall, the only way to reach Burgdorf in the winter is by snowmobile as the road is covered in snow.

While you can rent snowmobiles in town and take the direct route up Warren Wagon Road, we chose to explore on a guided snowmobile adventure leaving from Brundage Mountain . Our guides Jake and Robbie led us along backcountry ridges, through winding rows of powder-pillowed pine trees, and deep down into the valley before catching up with the main drag where we cranked the throttle to 50mph.

It was the perfect combination of practicing some technical riding skills before getting fast and furious.

Arriving at Burgdorf was just the icing on the cake of an already exhilarating day. Fed by natural geothermal springs, the water at Burgdorf stays a balmy 100 degrees all year round offering the perfect tonic for soothing your muscles after a long day on the trail.

If one day isn’t enough, you can rent one of their cute onsite cabins and stay overnight, allowing you to access the pools for a midnight soak. (No alcohol is allowed at the pools).

Burgdorf Hot Springs in Winter // Discover the best things to do in McCall Idaho in winter including cozy places to stay, fun winter activities, best restaurants, and more.

You’ll need to get an early start to grab breakfast before the snowmobiling tour. Cafe 6 Three 4 has a relaxed and fun atmosphere and they serve unique and tasty breakfast items. They have a couple of quick grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches, burritos, smoothies, and pastries, but I’d suggest taking the time to sit down and smell the fresh-brewed coffee while sampling a breakfast bowl or burrito.

Lunch is included on your snowmobile tour.

For dinner, after you clean up, walk down to the Sushi Bar for some tasty rolls or a poke bowl. The fish is super fresh and what’s really cool is the owner is committed to sourcing the most sustainable fish possible. Pro-tip: If you’re nice and chat up your server, you might get lucky and be offered the local’s menu which features some extra special rolls.

Day 4: Spa day

It’s time to wrap up your time in McCall but not before you treat yo’self. The Shore Lodge has one of the best spas around, and your muscles will thank you after those long days of skiing and manhandling snowmobiles.

The Cove Spa has a set of salt-water immersion pools where you can melt away any stress you have about leaving this lovely little mountain town. For an extra treat, opt for the Swedish-Style Vintage McCall massage or the Trail Blazer for deep-tissue lovers.

The Cove at Shore Lodge in McCall Idaho // Discover the best things to do in McCall Idaho in winter including cozy places to stay, fun winter activities, best restaurants, and more.

No one wants a massage on a full stomach, so skip breakfast or grab something small at the coffee shop at the Shore Lodge. The spa also has a room-service menu where you can have food and beverages (mimosas anyone?) delivered to the immersion pool lounges.

To get one more taste of town before you head back to Boise, I recommend grabbing lunch at the Salmon River Brewery . You won’t find a better elk burger and the rosemary fries are ridiculously good. The beer is obviously the main attraction, so if you’re the passenger on the drive down, a beer sampler is probably in order.

What a perfectly timed post to find as I’m heading to Idaho this week and McCall is among the destinations I might hit up. Some hot springs were already on my to do list, but I might have to add the fat biking! Never tried that before but it looks sweet.

We were just there, had a great time viewing the ice sculptures and walking about the town. Thanks for sharing, we will certainly set up our 4 day adventure next January.

I’m glad you enjoyed the Alpine Cabin at Jug Mountain. I actually helped work on that place. Amazing little chunk of heaven up there.

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

Top 20 Beautiful Places to Visit in Idaho

Although it’s sometimes overlooked in favour of neighbouring Montana and Oregon, I personally think Hemingway’s favourite state is home to a serious amount of beauty.

It’s hard to know where to start on such a list, but here are my favorite spots that I think are worth exploring…

Boise Idaho - great cities

This capital city is also known as the city of trees! Named by the 19th-century French Canadian trappers, this wooded river became a distinct landmark due to the oasis dominated by cottonwood trees.

A nature lover’s paradise, I love spending time here among rivers, mountains, canyons, deserts, and lakes with recreational activities.

Also, a great place to go sightseeing, the bustling downtown is a cultural epicentre with the Idaho State Capitol and the Classic Egyptian Theatre and is home to many small businesses. Full of incredibly welcoming people, chic cafes, and quirky shops, this mid-sized city retains the charm of a small town.

My must-do highlights…

  • Visit the popular River Greenbelt Park to stroll through the tree-lined paths and scenic views.

The very attractive landmark Idaho State Capital Building in Boise sits at the end of Capitol Street. Designed by John Tourtellotte and Fredrick Hummel, it was completed in 1920.

There’s a lot to take in, highly influenced by the U.S Capitol Building, the life-size Lincoln statue, and the Liberty Bell replica.

5 Winter Activities to Try in Idaho

Tiffany Burghart worked in partnership with Visit Idaho to create this Travel Tip.

As a family that loves outdoor adventure, we are always hunting for destinations and activities to experience together. And although some of us would prefer the heat of summer over the crisp chill of winter, we’ve learned to bundle up, embrace the beauty of winter, and explore new destinations together.

We had the opportunity to visit Idaho for five fun-filled days of outdoor adventures. Snowboarding is one of our favorite cold-weather activities, and we loved the time we spent at Bogus Basin and Pomerelle Mountain. After a week of checking out what Idaho winters have to offer, here are five additional winter adventures that took us by surprise in the best possible way.

four people on snow tubes in a line holding onto each other's feet going down a snowy snow tube lane at bogus basin

Winter Tubing at Bogus Basin

If you want a winter activity that is sure to bring out your inner child, try tubing! Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area has been on our snowboarding wish list for several years. So, when we found out they also had snow tubing, we couldn’t wait to try it out.

After picking up our tickets (which must be purchased online and in advance of your arrival), we each grabbed a tube (no lap riders) and lined up at the top of the hill. The staff gave us a brief orientation, and we set off down the 800-foot Pepsi Goldrush Tubing Hill. The thrilling ride had us laughing, squealing, and grinning from ear to ear the entire time. And no need to worry. A convenient conveyor belt lift saves your legs and takes you and your tube back to the top to repeat the fun.

For even more fun, check out the Glade Runner Mountain Coaster . It’s sure to keep your adrenaline pumping and a smile on your face.

Snowshoeing at Craters of the Moon

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is a dormant volcano with a unique landscape any time of year. It was created over time by lava flows that erupted from deep cracks in the earth and formed the lava beds that are present today. But with a blanket of snow, it transforms into a winter wonderland perfect for a day of adventuring. And although Craters’ Loop Road closes to vehicles in winter, it opens to snowshoers and cross-country skiers.

We began our visit at the visitor center, where we borrowed snowshoes and learned more about the park. After a brief orientation, we headed out on the one-mile snowshoe loop. Along the trail, we saw large and small cinder cones jutting out from beneath the stark white blanket of snow. The entire trek had all of us, including the kids, in awe.

  • You can borrow snowshoes from the Craters of the Moon Natural History Association at the visitors center. Donations are accepted.
  • Snowshoes are available Wednesday to Sun from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and must be returned by 3 p.m.
  • Take note of the signage along Loop Road, noting cross-country ski trails to the left and snowshoeing to the right as you leave the visitor’s center to keep the trails in good condition.
  • The visitor center does close for a small portion of the winter months. Check the website or call ahead if will need access to the visitor center during your visit.

Thousand Springs State Park

When we heard about the Box Canyon unit of Thousand Springs State Park, we knew we had to make it part of our trip. Thousand Springs State Park includes six different park units, all within a short driving distance along the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway .

The Box Canyon Springs Nature Preserve is accessible with a short walk along the access road from the front parking lot during winter. Along the quiet walk, our only companions were the cows from neighboring farms. Just past the second parking lot (accessible by car in summer), you’ll find an overlook that gives you a bird’s eye view deep into the canyon, where a bright teal blue pool of water pops against the white snow and canyon walls.

  • The walk from the winter parking lot to the scenic overlook is about three-quarters of a mile on gravel.

Perrine Coulee Falls

We love visiting waterfalls, and Perrine Coulee Falls in Twin Falls is no exception. Although the water flow is stronger in summer, during winter the real showstoppers are the many icicles lining the canyon walls alongside the waterfall.

After viewing the falls from below, head to the Canyon Rim Trail for a completely different perspective of the waterfall, the canyon, and the Perrine Bridge. This easy trail is paved and offers over 10 miles with various viewpoints along the way.

Things to know:

  • There is no official parking lot or obvious trail from the road for the falls.
  • Park along the side of the road on the way to or from Centennial Waterfront Park and walk to the falls, heeding no parking signs.
  • Be mindful of the snow and ice along the side of the road and on the rocks – it can be very slippery.

Soaking at Miracle and Banbury Hot Springs

One of our favorite ways to relax and soothe aching muscles after winter adventures is soaking in a hot spring or heated pool. And during our trip to Idaho, we were lucky enough to do both.

Located just two miles apart in Buhl, Miracle and Banbury Hot Springs are both relaxing geothermal hot springs. We chose to visit Miracle Hot Springs and took advantage of a private hot pool with an open-air ceiling to enjoy the stars during our soak. The soft, silky water was surprisingly hot without the odor you often expect from a hot spring.

Things to know:

  • Outdoor pools at Miracle Hot Springs have varying temperatures, allowing you to choose your preference.
  • If you choose to book a private pool, you must make reservations online ahead of time. We were able to find same-day availability, so it’s always worth a try, even if it’s last minute.
  • Banbury Hot Springs has a pool with a deep end and diving board.

The Riverside Hotel Boise

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Boise, The Riverside Hotel should be on your list. As a guest, you’ll get access to their heated saltwater pool and hot tub. The large pool has plenty of room for kids to play and for adults to relax.

Things to Know:

  • Heated towels are available to make that transition back to the cold air a little easier.
  • Children are allowed in the pool area from 4-8 pm. From 8-10 pm, the pool is for adults only.
  • The pool is only available to hotel guests.

Many people think of skiing and snowboarding when visiting Idaho in winter. But there are plenty of adventures to experience off the slopes as well. If you’re planning a winter trip to the Gem State, we encourage you to try some of these activities for a truly unique vacation.
