We talk to agencies touting dedicated Discord advertising products and discover how they’re helping brands get in on the action.

Brands are finding some joy operating on Discord

Founded in 2015, the voice, video and text communication service Discord was once the domain of gamers. Now, more than 78% of its 250 million monthly active users say they don’t use it for gaming purposes at all, but instead go there to hang out and talk with their friends and communities about all manner of interests in a UI somewhere between Reddit and Slack.

With its recent broader purpose, brands have been trying to work out how to operate there, be it from a community perspective, for advertising reach, or even for product testing and feedback.

There are no native advertising tools on Discord, so it’s not a case of moving Instagram spend and creative to a new platform. Early movers are having to pioneer an approach.

How brands can activate on Discord

There are several ways brands can get involved on Discord, but generally, it involves either creating communities or interacting with existing ones.

Logan Jory is the founder of Wildfire, a company touting a neat Discord server growth tech. He says that while a YouTube creator has many monetization options, the people running Discord communities have relatively few. It’s like the early days of influencer marketing, he tells us. “They’re trusted and call the shots, but they aren’t monetizing. There are clear parallels with 2015 social media influencers.”

Jory says the vision for Wildfire is to use Discord in ways that can’t be done elsewhere. “So producing bespoke content we know will convert in certain communities, assigning roles for people that convert, running live stages, events and games with brand ambassadors.”

Community partnership Discord

Jory’s agency is offering two Discord advertising products. The first is broadcasts, using its bots to run personalized sponsored recommendations to users. He says it is important that these are relevant to the server they are pinging and that they function much like a programmatic ad. “Anything that’s not well-integrated will be rejected. Discord requires a very careful touch as it’s not exactly an ‘ads friendly’ environment.”

And then there’s branded content, which often involves the community team in the ideation, creation and distribution of the work. “We can run sponsored emojis, live events and games with brand-sponsored prizes. And we can create educational channels about brands. There’s a lot of potential for creativity to truly involve a community with a campaign: something Gen Z on Discord demand versus being broadcast to.”

Brands can offer product exclusivity, discounts and access, but need to be aware that users are “more skeptical of inauthenticity,” he says. “On Discord, you can’t just broadcast one way and expect a good reaction.”

Right now, there are limited brands activating on Discord, and the ones that are have dipped their toes into web3, such as Samsung, Porsche, Time, Nickelodeon and Adidas, as well as games publishers which have their own servers. It’s best suited to “brands that make community core to their marketing,” he says. Adidas, he points out, sees it as a space to create and build with.

Meanwhile, Nikhil Roy, co-founder and creative director at Swipe Back, is running a dedicated Discord offering for brands. So far, he says, it is working with fashion company Kenzo “on various projects from Discord strategy and management, to NFT activations in-store, to amplifying real-life shows and content production.” He says it has more than 5,200 members and, at the time of publishing, 200-odd were online.

The main responsibility is in managing the Discord server and “creating a real relationship with their NFT holders,” he says, and he urges brands to “embrace the horizontal nature of Discord.” It can be “challenging but rewarding” to engage with users on the platform.

Gucci vault

Roy sees Gucci’s presence on the app – as well as in gaming and web3 – as particularly noteworthy. It’s a space for “any brand that has a passion point they can build upon,” he says. “Car manufacturers could create something really exciting about the automotive world, fashion brands can share knowledge and style tips and have it done in a very interactive and open way, streaming services can capture all the conversations around movie and series... It’s a place where ambassadors can be honed and passions built on.”

As Dan Jackson, senior creative producer at digital marketing company Jellyfish, previously told The Drum : “If you’re there just for the flash-in-the-pan instant moment, then you’re probably not in the right space. You need to have something to say... or an ethos about your company... it’s worth looking into.”

Can and Should You Advertise Your Brand on Discord?

Flori Needle

Published: September 14, 2021

Emerging platforms provide a unique opportunity for marketers. While it’s important to try new things in your marketing, is it worth trying new things if the platform is still so new that you don’t know if you’ll find success? For example, the once dismissed TikTok is now a social media channel with immense value for all different kinds of businesses.

Discord is now an emerging platform posing the same questions as TikTok once did. Many marketers are unsure how it works and whether it makes sense to leverage the tool as an experimental strategy.

If you’re curious, this post will explain what Discord is, whether it makes sense to join the platform, and how to market your brand or business if you do.

What is Discord?

Discord is a voice and chat platform where users join conversation servers, sometimes through exclusive invites, and talk to other members about niche topics. Initially launched in 2015 for gamers, it has since grown to house a diverse group of users, from influencers to content creators to businesses using the platform as an alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Considering that it has experienced considerable growth and now caters to various groups, it makes sense that marketers may be curious about joining the platform and seeing if it can help them meet their marketing needs.

Can you advertise on Discord?

Yes, and no.

There are no native advertising tools that you can find on other social media platforms like Facebook or TikTok, but you can still advertise your business organically through community engagement; “Brands can authentically engage with consumers on Discord by leveraging what is already appealing about Discord to consumers — forming relationships around common interests and having discussions in real-time,” said  Jesse Nicely, VP and group strategy director at Cashmere Agency, to Marketing Dive.

Which brands should use Discord?

Most businesses can benefit from using Discord, but the benefits are significant for those looking to create an always-on, engaged community of like-minded people that are interested in what your business has to offer.

Kenny Layton, Discord’s Head of Talent Partnerships, said  to EDM.com, “We like to call ourselves the 24-hour diner of the internet, where communities can just come and hang out with each other at any time they want.” While it is possible to create a community on other social channels, most people follow a wide variety of accounts, creators, brands, etc., but your Discord community is focused solely on your business.

Brands that are interested in learning more about their audience should also consider using Discord; “A lot of the time with artists they’re always having to guess what the fans want or are thinking...there’s no better way to know what your fans want than to have them tell you. That can inform...marketing and advertising spend. That data is valuable,” says  Brian Barnett to EDM.com.

However, as mentioned above, it is an emerging platform. There are no specific tools for advertising your channel, but, again, it can help you create relationships with your audience, which is a driving factor of customer loyalty .

If you’re interested in leveraging the platform, let’s discuss the different ways you can promote your brand on Discord.

How to Promote Your Brand on Discord

Build your own community..

The best way to promote your brand on Discord is to build a business-specific community server, along with different related channels for conversation. You can then invite users to join, have them find you organically through browsing the platform, or promote it on your other social channels and in marketing materials.

Marques Brownlee , a technology YouTuber, has a Discord community channel called the MKBHD. His community centers around discussions of his content, like podcasts and new videos, but he also created additional channels to promote different topics of conversation, as shown in the image below.

marques brownleee discord sidebar channels example

Music streaming service Spotify  also has a Discord community that features the channel #listeningparty (shown in the image below). Active users can share links to playlists they’re currently listening to, and voice chat about the music.

Within your community, you can further promote your brand by sharing links to your external social profiles, as beauty brand Starface has done for their Twitter account in the image below.

In addition to advertising your business, you can also use Discord as a tool for customer service by creating specific channels to house answers to frequently asked questions, or where users can ask questions and get answers from you or other active community members.

When you create a community, you can also set rules to ensure that everyone is respected and welcomed and designate moderators to patrol the channel to ensure rules get followed.

Join communities and servers relevant to your business offerings.

Another way to promote your business on Discord is to join other channels or servers relevant to your business and engage in conversations. Most channels are moderated, but you’ll likely be allowed to share links to your content, like high-quality blog posts that help you to draw in new users.

Nicely said , "Discord's fast-paced nature makes it fertile ground for emergent culture and trends, and allows brands the opportunity to constantly engage with consumers on interesting topics."

While the platform doesn’t have the built-in advertising features on other channels, it can be extremely useful for marketers looking to build a community of like-minded users who enjoy your business and want to engage in conversation. However, as noted before, Discord is still an emerging platform for marketing, so it can be challenging to get your foot in the door or see immediate success.

If you take the time to create a unique Discord community with different channels for conversation, engage with users in your community, and you provide them with high-quality content that they enjoy, you’ll likely find yourself with an active channel that teaches you more about your audience.

The options are endless, and if by any chance people don't find what they are looking for, the best part is they can create their own thread, channel, or even start a new server and invite some friends over.  Another great way to get the word out there is by creating promotional videos or graphics that show what your server has to offer. This will help to keep the peace and prevent arguments and disagreements from getting out of hand. Secondly, be active in the community yourself and take the time to get to know everyone. This will make people feel more comfortable and encourage them to participate more. Finally, make sure that you organize regular events and activities for people to enjoy. This will keep things fresh and give people something to look forward to. Also, don't be too strict with rules of the channel and conversations that should be held there - let people have fun and enjoy themselves! Plus, you can always create an extra channel for having fun only so that the serious ones don't get spammed with off-topic messages. By following these tips, you should be able to create a thriving community at your Discord server in no time!

Midjourney debuts feature for generating consistent characters across multiple gen AI images

Join us in Atlanta on April 10th and explore the landscape of security workforce. We will explore the vision, benefits, and use cases of AI for security teams. Request an invite here.

The popular AI image generating service Midjourney has deployed one of its most oft-requested features: the ability to recreate characters consistently across new images.

This has been a major hurdle for AI image generators to-date, by their very nature.

That’s because most AI image generators rely on “ diffusion models ,” tools similar to or based on Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion open-source image generation algorithm , which work roughly by taking text inputted by a user and trying to piece together an image pixel-by-pixel that matches that description, as learned from similar imagery and text tags in their massive (and controversial) training data set of millions of human created images .

Why consistent characters are so powerful — and elusive — for generative AI imagery

Yet, as is the case with text-based large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Cohere’s new Command-R , the problem with all generative AI applications is in their inconsistency of responses: the AI generates something new for every single prompt entered into it, even if the prompt is repeated or some of the same key words are used.

The AI Impact Tour – Atlanta

This is great for generating whole new pieces of content — in the case of Midjourney, images. But what if you’re storyboarding a film, a novel, a graphic novel or comic book, or some other visual medium where you want the same character or characters to move through it and appear in different scenes, settings, with different facial expressions and props?

This exact scenario, which is typically necessary for narrative continuity, has been very difficult to achieve with generative AI — so far. But Midjourney is now taking a crack at it, introducing a new tag, “–cref” (short for “character reference”) that users can add to the end of their text prompts in the Midjourney Discord and will try to match the character’s facial features, body type, and even clothing from a URL that the user pastes in following said tag.

As the feature progresses and is refined, it could take Midjourney further from being a cool toy or ideation source into more of a professional tool.

How to use the new Midjourney consistent character feature

The tag works best with previously generated Midjourney images. So, for example, the workflow for a user would be to first generate or retrieve the URL of a previously generated character.

Let’s start from scratch and say we are generating a new character with this prompt: “a muscular bald man with a beard and eye patch.”

tours ads discord

We’ll upscale the image that we like best, then control-click it in the Midjourney Discord server to find the “copy link” option.

tours ads discord

Then, we can type a new prompt in “wearing a white tuxedo standing in a villa –cref [URL]” and paste in the URL of the image we just generated, and Midjourney will attempt to generate that same character from before in our newly typed setting.

tours ads discord

As you’ll see, the results are far from exact to the original character (or even our original prompt), but definitely encouraging.

In addition, the user can control to some extent the “weight” of how closely the new image reproduces the original character by applying the tag “–cw” followed by a number 1 through 100 to the end of their new prompt (after the “–cref [URL]” string, so like this: “–cref [URL] –cw 100.” The lower the “cw” number, the more variance the resulting image will have. The higher the “cw” number, the more closely the resulting new image will follow the original reference.

As you can see in our example, inputting a very low “cw 8” actually returns what we wanted: the white tuxedo. Though now it has removed our character’s distinctive eyepatch.

tours ads discord

Oh well, nothing a little “vary region” can’t fix — right?

tours ads discord

Ok, so the eyepatch is on the wrong eye…but we’re getting there!

You can also combine multiple characters into one using two “–cref” tags side by side with their respective URLs.

The feature just went live earlier this evening, but already artists and creators are testing it now. Try it for yourself if you have Midjourney. And read founder David Holz’s full note about it below:

Hey @everyone @here we’re testing a new “Character Reference” feature today This is similar to the “Style Reference” feature, except instead of matching a reference style it tries to make the character match a “Character Reference” image.

How it works

  • Type --cref URL after your prompt with a URL to an image of a character
  • You can use --cw to modify reference ‘strength’ from 100 to 0
  • strength 100 ( --cw 100 ) is default and uses the face, hair, and clothes
  • At strength 0 ( --cw 0 ) it’ll just focus on face (good for changing outfits / hair etc)

What it’s meant for

  • This feature works best when using characters made from Midjourney images. It’s not designed for real people / photos (and will likely distort them as regular image prompts do)
  • Cref works similarly to regular image prompts except it ‘focuses’ on the character traits
  • The precision of this technique is limited, it won’t copy exact dimples / freckles / or tshirt logos.
  • Cref works for both Niji and normal MJ models and also can be combined with --sref

Advanced Features

  • You can use more than one URL to blend the information /characters from multiple images like this --cref URL1 URL2 (this is similar to multiple image or style prompts)

How does it work on the web alpha?

  • Drag or paste an image into the imagine bar, it now has three icons. selecting these sets whether it is an image prompt, a style reference, or a character reference. Shift+select an option to use an image for multiple categories

Remember, while MJ V6 is in alpha this and other features may change suddenly, but V6 official beta is coming soon. We’d love everyone’s thoughts in ideas-and-features We hope you enjoy this early release and hope it helps you play with building stories and worlds

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Some of the shots that left Peter Malnati frustrated on the back nine were the ones that worked out so well for him Sunday in the Valspar Championship.

A putt he thought he left short dropped for birdie on the 12th hole. A shot into the 16th in mangled rough was close enough to a sprinkler that he was entitled to a free drop that put him on the fringe and made par easier.

But there was no doubting the winner.

Locked in a battle with hard-luck Cameron Young, Malnati drilled a 5-iron into the wind to 6 feet on the par-3 17th for birdie to break out of a tie, and he closed with a par for a 4-under 67 to win by two and earn his first trip to the Masters.

“I remember telling my caddie I needed to make a 2,” Malnati said. “That was really fun in that moment to just step up, not overthink it, just a full 5-iron at the TV tower, go. And to watch that ball fly was a really cool feeling.”

Malnati tapped in that yellow golf ball for par on the final hole for only his second PGA Tour victory. Young, made it easier on him by taking bogey on the final hole for a 68. Young now has seven runner-up finishes without a win.

On a wild day of rallies and meltdowns, it came down to Malnati and Young playing a group apart as they headed into the tough finishing stretch at Innisbrook known as the “Snake Pit.”

Malnati’s approach on the 16th went long and left into gnarly rough some 50 feet from the pin, leaving him a tough chip to try to save par and stay tied. But his foot was on a sprinkler head, which entitled him to a free drop. With the extra club length, he was able to drop it on the fringe and use putter, which he sent down to short range for par.

On the par-3 17th into wind, Malnati hit his most important shot of the day for birdie. Up ahead, Young hit his drive well left and did well to hammer a gap wedge over the trees and onto the green, 50 feet away. He lagged it about 10 feet short and missed the par putt.

Malnati found a fairway bunker on the 18th, but hit that on the green for a simple two-putt to finish at 12-under 272, his first victory since the Sanderson Farms Championship in 2015.

More than the $1,512,000 from winning, Malnati goes to the Masters for the first time and gets a two-year exemption. He also is assured of getting into the remaining four $20 million signature events without any help.

Malnati is one of six player-directors on the PGA Tour board, and he was singled out for criticism when he received a sponsor exemption — along with two other board members — to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“I told myself to do my best on every shot,” Malnati said as he fought back tears. “I was so nervous coming down the stretch. I can’t describe it. It’s so cool.”

It was gut-wrenching for Young, one of the top young talents and power players in golf who can’t seem to get across the line. He shot 31 on the back nine at St. Andrews in the 2022 British Open, only to finish one shot behind Cameron Smith, who shot 30. Young also was in the hunt until the 16th hole of the 2022 PGA Championship.

“It was just a bad time for a pull,” Young said of his tee shot on the 18th.

Mackenzie Hughes of Canada (70) and PGA Tour rookie Chandler Phillips (69) tied for third. They were among five players who had at least a share of the lead in the final round at Innisbrook.

Hughes had the lead on the back nine with a 45-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole. He was tied and in the middle of the 12th fairway when it began to fall apart. His approach went over the green and into the back slope of the bunker, leaving him no shot to a back pin. He fell two shots behind when Malnati made a 15-foot birdie.

On the par-3 13th, Hughes came up short and in the water and he was never seriously part of the mix the rest of the way.

Keith Mitchell started the day with a two-shot lead, and he was three behind at the turn. Mitchell had to pitch out of the trees three times on the opening six holes and did not have a hole under par until an eagle on the 14th. By then he was 8 over for his round. He shot 77,

Seamus Power, playing in the final group, shot 76.

Malnati is No. 184 in the world ranking, making him the fifth player to win full PGA Tour events this year. His only other win in the fall of 2015 did not come with an automatic invitation to the Masters. Fall events started getting invitations the next year.

“You wonder if you’re ever going to do it again,” Malnati said. “In the nine years since my last win, it’s getting harder.”

Talks between U.S. and Israeli defense officials focus on Rafah.

Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, and the U.S. defense secretary, Lloyd J. Austin III, met at the Pentagon on Tuesday to discuss the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza and Israel’s plan to invade the southern city of Rafah, where U.S. officials have warned that a major military action could lead to catastrophe.

The meeting came amid growing friction between the two allies a day after the U.S. decision to allow the passage of a U.N. resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. Afterward, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared he was scrapping a plan to dispatch a delegation to Washington to discuss the potential offensive in Rafah.

Remarks by Mr. Gallant and Mr. Austin before the meeting underscored the divide. While both noted their countries’ commitment to Israel’s security, Mr. Gallant emphasized what he said was the urgent need to destroy Hamas, secure the release of Israelis taken hostage in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks and “ensure Israel’s military edge and capabilities.”

Mr. Austin focused on the dire consequences the war has had for Palestinian civilians. “The number of civilian casualties is far too high, and the amount of humanitarian aid is far too low,” he said. The safety of Palestinians in Rafah, where more than a million people are holed up, was a “top priority,” he added.

After the meeting, a senior Defense Department official said Mr. Austin presented the broad outlines of the Biden administration’s alternative approach to a major combat operation in Rafah. The main points were a focus on precision targeting intended to root out Hamas leadership, credible and effective steps to evacuate civilians sheltering there, an increase in humanitarian aid and securing the border between Gaza and Egypt.

The official, who spoke on a call with reporters on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential talks, said that the Israelis were receptive to the priorities raised by Mr. Austin and that there would be additional meetings in the future.

Senior administration officials have said that any Israeli operation that did not adequately mitigate the risks to civilians in Rafah would be a mistake and exacerbate the dire living conditions in the enclave. Without proper planning or preparations, the senior Defense Department official said, a major ground operation into Rafah could dramatically restrict the flow of already insufficient humanitarian assistance into Gaza when just the opposite needs to happen.

Mr. Gallant — who was also expected to sit down with the C.I.A. director, William J. Burns, a key figure in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas — met with Mr. Austin a day after the United States abstained from a vote on a cease-fire resolution at the U.N. Security Council, a decision that Mr. Netanyahu said “harms the war effort as well as the effort to liberate the hostages.”

Hopes for a breakthrough in the talks for a deal to halt the fighting and secure the release of Israeli hostages appeared to remain distant on Tuesday. Hamas said late Monday that the latest proposal on the table did not meet its demands.

The talks in recent days have been hung up on the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released, in particular those serving extended sentences for violence against Israelis, according to two U.S. officials and an Israeli official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter.

Last week, the U.S. delegation — led by Mr. Burns — proposed a compromise to try to bridge the gap, which Israel has accepted, according to the Israeli official and another person familiar with the negotiations. A Hamas statement on Monday appeared to reject it, saying it was demanding Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and “a true prisoner exchange.”

Gazans drown trying to retrieve airdropped aid, the authorities say.

Video player loading

The authorities in Gaza said on Tuesday that several people had drowned while trying to retrieve airdropped aid that had fallen into the Mediterranean, the latest incident in which an airdrop has apparently led to deaths. They called for an end to airdrops over the territory and an increase in deliveries by land.

People waded into the water from a beach in northern Gaza on Monday afternoon to get the aid packages, according to Ahmed Abu Qamar, a Gaza-based researcher for EuroMed Rights, a human rights group, who said he had spoken to witnesses. Around a dozen people drowned, including at least one who had become entangled in a parachute, he said. Others were taken to a nearby hospital.

The government media office in Gaza said that 12 people had drowned off the northern coast while trying to retrieve aid that had been dropped in the sea. It was not possible to confirm the details independently and it was not clear which country was responsible for the airdrop in question.

Three of approximately 80 aid bundles dropped by the United States on Monday “were reported to have had parachute malfunctions and landed in the water,” a Pentagon spokeswoman, Sabrina Singh, said at a news conference on Tuesday, but added that she could not confirm the reports of the drownings.

The aid was intentionally dropped over water and intended to be carried to land by wind drift, to mitigate potential harm in the event that the parachutes failed to deploy, Ms. Singh said.

The fatalities were not the first connected to aid drops. Earlier this month , the authorities in Gaza said that at least five Palestinians had been killed and several others wounded when airdropped aid packages fell on them in Gaza City. On Tuesday, the Gaza government media office said that six other people had died during what it characterized as stampeded trying to get aid that was airdropped in other locations.

The United Nations and other aid organizations say that trucks, rather than planes, are the cheapest, safest and most effective means of delivering aid to Gaza, a territory whose population of more than two million faces a hunger crisis that humanitarian organizations say borders on famine.

But several governments, including those of the United States, France, Jordan and Egypt, have in recent weeks used airdrops to supplement aid that arrives by land, while also calling on Israel to allow in more trucks.

Britain airdropped aid to Gaza for the first time on Monday, delivering over 10 tons of supplies along the northern coastline as part of a mission led by Jordan, the British defense ministry said in a statement .

Governments say that the drops are necessary because of a steep fall in the amount of aid entering Gaza since Oct. 7, when Hamas led a deadly attack on Israel. The number of aid trucks entering Gaza since then has fallen by around 75 percent, according to U.N. data. One charity, World Central Kitchen, delivered a bargeload of aid to Gaza earlier this month.

Governments and aid groups say Israel has slowed aid deliveries through stringent inspections of trucks. The authorities in Israel blame UNRWA, the United Nations aid agency that supports Palestinians, arguing that Israel can inspect and process aid trucks faster than humanitarian groups can distribute the aid inside the territory.

A bill to continue exempting ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service sparks protests in Israel.

Tensions are rising in Israel over a bill to extend ultra-Orthodox Jews’ exemption from compulsory military service, a provision has divided the government and poses what may be the biggest threat to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration since the war began.

While most Israelis must perform mandatory military service, the country’s ultra-Orthodox minority have for decades been exempt from conscription to focus on religious study. The new bill has incited protests in Israeli cities and discord within the country’s war cabinet as the fighting in Gaza grinds on.

Mr. Netanyahu’s cabinet was expected to discuss the bill on Tuesday but postponed its meeting at the last minute after protests and disagreements about its contents, Israeli news outlets reported. The demonstrations demanding equal military service included one on Tuesday in front of Mr. Netanyahu’s office in Jerusalem.

The reluctance of the ultra-Orthodox — known in Hebrew as Haredim — to serve in the military has long been a source of tension with secular Israelis who are required to protect the nation.

There were signs of a slight shift in attitudes in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October: More than 2,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews sought to join the military in the first 10 weeks of the war, showing solidarity in the face of a shared threat. But with the war in Gaza dragging on and Israeli reservists getting called to serve longer or additional tours of duty, a fierce national debate over the longstanding Haredi exemption has been reignited.

The debate has pitted some Haredi lawmakers against secular officials like Defense Minister Yoav Gallant — who wants to increase Haredi involvement in the military — and has threatened to topple Mr. Netanyahu’s governing coalition. (Mr. Gallant has said he will not support the bill and Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet and a rival of Mr. Netanyahu, has threatened to leave the government if it passes.)

While the vast majority of Haredim hope to retain the exemption, nearly 30 percent of the Haredi public recently support conscription — 20 points higher than before the war, according to a poll conducted in December by the Haredi Institute for Public Affairs, a Jerusalem-based research group.

Polling has also shown that other Israelis increasingly want Haredim to be required to enlist, particularly with a growing number of soldiers returning from battle in Gaza and questioning the absence of ultra-Orthodox on the front lines.

After the U.N. resolution, Israel and Hamas are still far apart on a cease-fire.

Israel and Hamas appeared no closer on Tuesday to negotiating a pause in the fighting in Gaza, as both sides dampened the prospect for an agreement a day after the U.N. Security Council called for an immediate cease-fire.

Mediators have been in Qatar trying to narrow gaps between Israel and Hamas and secure a deal for a halt in the fighting and the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

After the Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” Hamas issued a statement late Monday saying that Israel’s latest proposal in Qatar did not meet its demands.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired back on Tuesday morning, confirming that Hamas had rejected a “compromise proposal” and calling the armed group’s demands “extreme.”

“Hamas’s stance clearly demonstrates its utter disinterest in a negotiated deal and attests to the damage done by the U.N. Security Council’s resolution,” he said in a statement, adding that Israel “will not address Hamas’s delusional demands.”

Mr. Netanyahu’s office declined to say whether the Israeli delegation would remain in Qatar. Israeli news outlets, including Haaretz , reported that some members of the delegation had been brought home.

Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman, on Tuesday responded to Mr. Netanyahu’s assertion that Hamas was balking at the hostage talks because of the Council’s resolution, calling it “inaccurate in almost every respect” and “unfair to the hostages and their families.”

Mr. Miller said that news reports about Hamas’s position have not reflected “the actual substance” of the group’s response. “And I can tell you that that response was prepared before the U.N. Security Council vote, not after it,” he said.

A spokesman for the foreign ministry of Qatar, which has been helping facilitate the negotiations, said on Tuesday that the talks “are ongoing, they have not stopped.”

“We remained hopeful, from Day 1,” the spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, told reporters.

Israel presses on with strikes in Gaza after the U.N. cease-fire resolution.

The Israeli military pressed on with its bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, signaling that the passing of a United Nations resolution calling for a cease-fire for the holy month of Ramadan the day before had not shaken Israel’s determination to keep fighting.

The military said its fighter jets had struck “over 60 targets” in Gaza over the previous day. It added that its forces were also operating in central Gaza, where it said they had killed “a number of terrorists.” The military also said on Tuesday that it had confirmed the death of a senior Hamas leader. Wafa, the Palestinian Authority’s news agency, said Tuesday that the Israeli military had struck residential homes and buildings and that dozens of people were killed.

In a statement, the Israeli military added that it was continuing its “operational activity” around Al-Amal Hospital and the town of Al-Qarara, in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza, adding that its forces were “eliminating terrorists and carrying out targeted raids on terrorist infrastructure.”

Al-Amal Hospital went out of service on Monday night after Israeli forces besieged it a day earlier and forced everyone inside to leave before closing off its entrances with earthen barriers, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, which runs the hospital. The organization said on Monday that two people had been killed and three others wounded when Israeli forces opened fire as they were being evacuated.

The Israeli military also said on Tuesday that it was pressing on with its assault on Al-Shifa Hospital in the north for a ninth day. It said its forces there had “located weapons, and engaged with and eliminated several terrorists in the hospital area.” Witnesses have described days of fear at the complex , with several patients dying as a result of the assault.

Ezzeldine al-Dali, who lives less than a mile from Al-Shifa, said airstrikes and gunfire had intensified in the area on Monday night, before calming down on Tuesday morning, which residents took as a sign that Israeli forces had concluded their raid.

He said people he knew went to the hospital thinking the raid was over, but “they were wrong,” and people were shot and wounded. His account could not be independently verified. The Israeli military said it was checking into it.

Israel has long accused Hamas, the armed group that led an attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, of using hospitals in Gaza for military purposes, a claim that Hamas and hospital administrators have denied.

An analysis by The New York Times found that Hamas had used the Shifa complex for military purposes. The Israeli military, however, has struggled to prove its claim that Hamas maintained a command-and-control center under it.

In a news conference on Tuesday, a military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that Israel had killed Marwan Issa, the deputy commander of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza, in a targeted strike.

Admiral Hagari said on March 11 that Israel had targeted Mr. Issa, a presumed planner of the Oct. 7 attacks, and another official. The United States had confirmed him dead last week , making him the senior-most Hamas leader to be killed in Gaza since the start of the war.

Though a U.N. resolution had passed, Mr. al-Dali, 22, said it did not give him or those around him any hope that the Israeli bombardment would stop soon. “We have lost hope in every way,” he said in a phone call on Tuesday.

“The International Court of Justice, Biden and all the Arab and Western countries could not stop Israel,” said Mr. al-Dali. “So why would the United Nations be able to stop them?”

The International Court of Justice in late January ordered Israel to ensure that its actions would not lead to genocide, and to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. But the court did not order a halt to fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Wafa reported on Tuesday that dozens of Palestinians had been killed in an Israeli strike on a family home near Al-Shifa, citing medical sources. It did not specify the timing. The agency also reported that the Israeli military had struck other residential homes and buildings around Al-Shifa and fired on people moving on the roads around the hospital, killing and wounding dozens.

The Palestinian news agency also reported Israeli strikes in the northwest of Gaza City, the northern community of Beit Lahia and the southern city of Rafah, where it reported that a home where displaced families were living was struck, killing more than a dozen Palestinians and wounding dozens more.

These reports could not be independently verified, and the Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on them.

Aaron Boxerman contributed reporting.

The political leader of Hamas meets with Iranian leaders in Tehran.

The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, met with top leaders in Tehran, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Tuesday, a sign of solidarity against Israel amid seemingly stalled negotiations for a cease-fire in Gaza.

The trip by Mr. Haniyeh, who lives in Qatar, came a day after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages, breaking a five-month impasse during which the United States vetoed three calls for a halt to the fighting.

Photographs released on Iranian state media showed Mr. Haniyeh meeting Mr. Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. After the meeting, Iran’s semiofficial Mehr News Agency reported that Mr. Khamenei had vowed that his country “will not hesitate to support the cause of Palestine and the oppressed and resistant people of Gaza.”

Mr. Haniyeh, who Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday had traveled with a “high-level” delegation, also met with Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Iran’s foreign minister. In a joint news conference after that meeting, Mr. Haniyeh said that “Iran stands at the forefront of supporting the cause and nation of Palestine” and that the U.N. resolution showed that Israel was “facing unprecedented isolation,” Iranian state media reported.

The U.N. resolution, which calls for a cease-fire for the holy month of Ramadan, passed with the United States abstaining from the vote rather than vetoing the measure. That decision immediately caused friction: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said he would not send a high-level delegation to Washington for meetings with U.S. officials.

Hamas has welcomed the resolution, saying that it was willing “to immediately engage on a prisoner exchange process that would lead to the release of prisoners on both sides.”

But negotiations in Qatar aimed at securing an agreement for a pause in the fighting and the release of Israeli hostages have yet to produce an agreement. Late Monday, Hamas said that the latest proposal on the table did not meet its demands.

Iran has long been one of Hamas’s main supporters in the region and the longstanding alliance has fueled fears that the war in Gaza could spiral into a wider regional conflict.

Iran has a history of training and arming proxy militia groups in the region, from Gaza to Lebanon, Iraq and Syria — a network known as the Axis of Resistance. It supports Hamas militarily and has helped it design and produce a domestic missile and rocket system to match the capabilities and material available in Gaza, which has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt for over a decade.

Since Israel began its ground operations in Gaza, a number of the Iran-linked groups in the Axis of Resistance have launched attacks — including against U.S. military installations in Iraq and Syria — in what they have said is solidarity with Palestinians under bombardment.
