The 3 types of Seabourn cruise ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Among cruise lines that focus on high-priced luxury trips, Seabourn has one of the simplest fleets.

All the line's ships fall into one of three groups: The Encore-class ocean ships, the Odyssey-class ocean ships and the expedition ships (which Seabourn has not given a class name).

Each of these groups is made up of ships constructed around the same time to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Seabourn operates seven vessels — two Encore-class ships, three Odyssey-class ships and two expedition ships. That number is set to drop by one in 2024 when one of the Odyssey-class vessels leaves the Seabourn fleet .

Here, we explain the distinctive features of Seabourn's three ship classes, so you can plan the luxury cruise that's right for you.

An introduction to Seabourn ships

Seabourn is one of about half a dozen major cruise lines that compete in the market for "ultra-luxury" cruises — voyages that promise a high level of elegance and pampering and have a high price tag to match. The company, which debuted in 1988, claims to have pioneered the niche.

Like all such brands, Seabourn operates ships that are far smaller and more intimate than the giant floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line . Instead of thousands of passengers, each Seabourn vessel is designed to hold a few hundred people.

Still, while the ships are smaller than what you'll find at a mass-market line, they're not cramped. Indeed, they're among the most spacious ships at sea when measured by their space-per-passenger ratio, which is about 50% higher than what you'll find on many mass-market ships. They also operate at a nearly one-to-one ratio of staff to passengers — one of the highest levels in the cruise business.

Both space-per-passenger ratios and staff-to-passenger ratios are measurements used as shorthand for the luxury level of a vessel.

Seabourn ships also offer such luxury touches as marinas for water-based play when the vessels are anchored in calm and sunny locales.

Every cabin is a suite, and the number of restaurants, bars and lounges is impressive for vessels of this size.

Two of the line's three types of ships — the Encore class and Odyssey class — are similar in design. The main difference between the two is that the Encore-class ships are bigger. They essentially are Odyssey-class ships with an additional deck for extra suites and public areas.

seabourn cruise ships by age

As a result, the Encore-class ships can hold 600 passengers, based on double occupancy, while the Odyssey-class ships are designed to carry up to 458 passengers.

The third and newest class of Seabourn ships, the expedition ships (Seabourn doesn't use a formal class name for these vessels) are much smaller ships specifically built for expedition cruising — a type of adventure-focused cruising that involves visiting hard-to-reach and off-the-beaten-path places such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

Expedition ships are designed to hold 264 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Seabourn ships aren't as big or opulent as the luxury vessels operated by some of its competitors, most notably Regent Seven Seas Cruises (which mostly markets vessels carrying 700 to 750 passengers). The line offers a more subdued, intimate sort of luxury. If it's soaring spaces loaded with pricey marble and crystal chandeliers you're after, Seabourn may not be for you. However, if you prize intimacy and elegance without a lot of showiness, Seabourn ships could be a good choice.

Encore Class

Ships in class: Seabourn Ovation (2018); Seabourn Encore (2016).

seabourn cruise ships by age

Seabourn's two Encore-class ships, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore, are the biggest vessels in the line's fleet. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp regarding cruise ships, these are the Seabourn vessels you'll want to pick.

That said, the ships aren't all that different than the line's smaller Odyssey-class vessels (more on those below). Built on the same platform as the Odyssey-class ships, just with one more deck, they feature all the same main public spaces that exist on the earlier vessels, often in the same locations, with a handful of additions, the most notable being a sushi restaurant.

As is the case with the Odyssey-class vessels, the hub of each Encore-class vessel is its centrally located public gathering place known as Seabourn Square.

A revolutionary concept when it first debuted on Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Square might best be described as the ship's living room. Filled with comfortable seating, workstations with computers, a puzzle table and cases lined with books, it's a multipurpose space that is part lounge, part cafe and part library.

On one end of Seabourn Square is its most alluring feature — a European-style coffee bar serving carefully crafted cappuccinos and other espresso drinks, plus freshly baked pastries, homemade gelato and other nibbles. The spacious room is also home to a circular concierge area at its center where staff can help you book activities, and a guest services desk and a desk where you can book future cruises.

Other major public areas on each Encore-class ship include the Grand Salon, a theater-like space with tiered seating that is home to entertainment at night and serves as a lecture hall during the day. The Club is a cozy lounge with a bar and a tiny casino on the side. At the top of the ship, overlooking the bow is the Observation Bar, which offers stellar 270-degree views (even better views than what is available from the bridge, one deck below).

Dining options include The Restaurant, the ship's main dining room, which offers elegant sit-down meals; The Patio, a poolside venue serving lighter fare; and The Colonnade, a casual eatery with both buffet and table-service dining during the day.

The Patio converts into the table-service-only Earth & Ocean for dinner. In the latter configuration, it offers bistro-style cuisine that rotates throughout each voyage.

In addition, the ship is home to The Grill by Thomas Keller, an eatery created by the famed chef. It offers his take on the classic American restaurant of the 1950s and 1960s, with his versions of such iconic American dishes as New York strip steak and lobster thermidor. Keller also designed dishes for family-style dinners with set menus served in The Colonnade on select nights.

Unique to this class of ships is Sushi, a dedicated sushi restaurant with just 30 seats. Tucked away in a corner off a central stairway, it's a hidden gem offering lovely and innovative sushi and sashimi plates at night. During the day, it serves disassembled "bento boxes" with cooked entrees such as miso salmon and teriyaki chicken — the latter arriving with miso soup and small dishes of salad, rice and oshinko.

As is often the case with luxury vessels, none of the eateries have an extra charge.

The Encore-class ships also have a small but sumptuous spa and wellness center with five treatment rooms, a thermal area, a salon and a fitness area.

seabourn cruise ships by age

Decor-wise, the Encore-class ships have a more yacht-like look than the older Odyssey-class vessels, with interiors created from top-to-bottom by well-known hospitality designer Adam Tihany. Tihany didn't work on the earlier vessels, which have a more Nordic-style sleekness.

I find the Encore-class ships more enticing in their design than the Odyssey-class ships, thanks to Tihany's rethinking of the decor. That said, I have mixed feelings about their larger size, which results in a slightly more crowded feel. This is most noticeable when at the main pool areas of the vessels, which aren't much bigger than the main pool areas on the Odyssey-class ships, despite the ships carrying about a third more passengers.

On the plus side, the Encore-class ships have several additional hideaways for outdoor lounging tucked into little nooks at their fronts and backs.

Odyssey Class

Ships in class: Seabourn Quest (2011); Seabourn Sojourn (2010); Seabourn Odyssey (2009).

seabourn cruise ships by age

As noted above, Seabourn's three Odyssey-class ships are similar to its two Encore-class ships in design, with the main difference being that they are a bit smaller. At 32,326 gross tons, the three vessels measure about 23% smaller than the Encore-class vessels. They hold about 24% fewer passengers.

The result is that the Odyssey-class ships provide a more intimate feel. The basic layout of the ships in the two classes is roughly the same, albeit with a few notable differences. On the Odyssey-class vessels, you're traveling with fewer people, which results in everything from fewer crowds around the main pool to fewer people in the casual The Colonnade eatery at lunchtime.

As with the Encore-class ships, the public areas of the Odyssey-class ships revolve around a centrally located public gathering space called Seabourn Square, featuring elements of a lounge, cafe and library.

The Odyssey-class ships also have Grand Salons with tiered seating for entertainment and lectures, a cozy The Club bar and lounge, and a ship-top Observation Bar that offers sweeping views.

seabourn cruise ships by age

The biggest difference with the Odyssey-class ships is that they have one less deck and, therefore, 24% fewer suites. In public areas, the only notable difference is that there is no sushi restaurant and a smaller The Grill by Thomas Keller. (Initially, these ships didn't have Thomas Keller restaurants, but they were carved out of space previously dedicated to the casual eatery, The Colonnade.)

The deck where the sushi restaurant and large Thomas Keller restaurant are located on the Encore-class ships is the deck that is missing on the Odyssey-class ships.

The expedition ships

Ships in class: Seabourn Pursuit (2023); Seabourn Venture (2022).

seabourn cruise ships by age

Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture are the Seabourn ships you book to get off the beaten path.

Much smaller than the other vessels in the Seabourn fleet and designed to carry just 264 passengers each, they're both expedition ships — small vessels built extra tough to travel to the most remote and hard-to-reach parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic.

As is typical for ships of this type, they both have extra-thick hulls and other features that allow them to bump through ice in polar regions. They carry Zodiac boats for landings in remote areas that have no infrastructure. They also sail with expedition guides to lead you on the landings and explain the wildlife and scenery.

Related: Luxury adventure cruise ships you have to see to believe

Still, unlike many expedition ships, Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture are luxurious vessels, with many of the upscale venues and amenities found on Seabourn's bigger, more traditional luxury ships. If you know the bigger ships, you'll feel right at home on the expedition ships.

Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture both have Seabourn's signature Seabourn Square area that offers snacks, coffee and a guest services desk. Each offers a version of the main restaurant called The Restaurant and the more casual The Colonnade eatery.

seabourn cruise ships by age

Rounding out the public spaces are a smaller version of Seabourn's spa and wellness center and a bar and lounge called The Club.

Suites on these vessels are especially swanky, with bright bathrooms all featuring bathtubs. Walk-in closets provide ample storage, even for long sailings, and every room has a small drying closet for outdoor adventure clothing. The latter is a welcome touch after rainy days and wet landings (when you put on waterproof boots provided by the ship and step off the Zodiac into the water when you reach the shore).

In addition, small in-room touches, like Swarovski binoculars and a pillow menu, further enhance the ship's already thoughtful design.

The expedition ships also offer features that are unique to their class, from a "mud room" with cubbies where passengers can prep for landings in remote places such as Antarctica to a pair of submarines that are available for extra-fee underwater excursions.

In short, the ships are like smaller, more adventurous versions of the bigger Seabourn vessels.

Bottom line

The three types of Seabourn ships vary significantly in size , but they all are similar in their onboard venues and amenities. If you've been on any Seabourn ship and loved it, you'll surely love its other vessels, too.

What is the line? Seabourn

Name of ship? Seabourn Venture

Passenger occupancy? 264

Itinerary? Lima to Santiago

Seabourn does an impressive job of morphing adventure into its signature luxury experience onboard Seabourn Venture , its first expedition vessel.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Seabourn, a longtime luxury cruise player, garners kudos for all-suite accommodations, attentive passenger service, elegant ship designs, fine dining and many inclusives such as complimentary alcohol and caviar. Cruisers, well-heeled and well-traveled, are primarily Seabourn devotees. Definitely not the party crowd, passengers skew in the 55+ age category and appreciate the casually elegant country-club vibe.

Tell us about the ship in general

Seabourn Venture launched in July 2022 with 122 all-veranda oceanfront suites (some are two-story) and a PC6 Polar Class-rated hunter-green hull. It’s one of the prettiest expedition ships I’ve seen, evoking a sleek adventuresome yacht. Despite a small passenger capacity, the ship feels so spacious. There’s plenty of intimate bars and lounges, and outdoor space - not just for viewing wildlife or lounging, but also for swimming in an infinity pool or soaking in one of four hot tubs (two by the cool outdoor Sky Bar). The well-equipped fitness center is large for the ship size. Built for polar exploration, this vessel features a cozy alpine-meets-the-sea vibe, with faux-fur pillows, plush blankets for staying warm and three fireplaces with dancing water vapor flames. The design keeps the focus on expeditions and wildlife, from art to screens projecting videos of Antarctica or the Arctic in all their pristine glory. Expedition thrills include submersibles, sea kayaks and Zodiacs. Seabourn ocean liner fans will recognize Seabourn Square, the popular meeting place with comfy seating, library books, snacks and espresso drinks brewed to order.

Who is onboard?

Expect an abundance of upmarket couples, many bucket-listers, some traveling with friends. Some passengers joined this cruise as an add-on to visiting Machu Picchu; others were staying on when our cruise indeed, to sail to Antarctica. The crowd was mostly Americans, with a smattering of Brits and European voyagers such as Belgians and French. They were a friendly bunch,  particularly open to chats in lounges and when playing trivia.

Describe the cabins

All accommodations are suites, and range from entry level, which includes a bath with a separate tub and shower and Molton Brown soaps, to stunning bi-level Wintergarden Suite accommodations. A heated locker for expedition gear is a nice inclusion, as is the analog wall clock which changes time automatically - a plus when sailing through multiple time zones.Beds come with three pillows for each passenger; soft, medium and hard. Duvets are at their silky best.

I stayed in a Panorama Veranda Suite, which I highly recommend. Such accommodations are worth the extra fee above standard suites and less expensive than other higher-end accommodations, such as Penthouse and Owners Suites. Expect a staggering floor-to-ceiling ocean view everywhere - from the bed, spacious living area, and even in the expansive bathroom. Imagine soaking in the tub and viewing penguins diving off ice floes. Floors are wood-like tile and can be heated throughout the suite, not just in the bathroom. Brew coffee from a high-end Nespresso machine, although, of course, you can order a pot or specialty cup of joe.

Tell us about the crew

The crew impresses with warm friendly service rather than opting for stiff and formal. Most servers seemed genuinely happy, and when asked how their day was going, they often answered “amazing” and it never sounded fake. Suite attendants - this line doesn’t offer butler service - kept accommodations spotless. They were also excellent at remembering daily requests, such as placing fresh orange juice in your fridge daily. Guest Services staff is most helpful and patient.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Got a craving for caviar, even for breakfast? Order eggs Benedict topped with two generous heaps of caviar and no one blinks. Complimentary caviar (Regiis Ova, partially owned by star chef Thomas Keller) is offered, anywhere, anytime, with a once-a-sail deck party delivering a seemingly endless supply. You will not see caviar listed on the menu; it’s like a Seabourn devotee secret. Complimentary alcohol, including wines and spirits, is another perk. No need for reservations anywhere; it’s all open seating. The Restaurant dinners, like honey-roasted quail, were highlights, with deft chefs cooking intricate repasts with the finest ingredients. Sauces were silken and consommes (love the duck) tasted like the bones were simmering for hours. In the alternative dining venue Colonnade, breakfasts and lunches are buffets with an impressive variety of dishes. Count on a lunchtime carving station, with a chef slicing everything from a giant roast beef haunch to whole suckling pig. Some Colonnade meals were themed, dishing up tastes of the world, such as Indian or Mexican. Afternoon tea was excellent, especially the tender scones and smoked salmon mini-bagels. In the Club lounge beginning at 6 p.m, sushi chefs fashioned primo sashimi, such as yellowtail and salmon, and sushi. Passengers came for pre-dinner snacks and often never left, ordering plate after plate. The club offered cool cocktails, like Honey Dew Wop, made with Ketel One vodka and honeydew juice.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The small spa offers multiple treatment choices. Some passengers raved about their facials and I actually saw (and envied) their clearly glowing skin. I tried a 75-minute deep-tissue massage; my masseur may have been slight but he had hands of steel. I could barely stagger off the table. I also liked that he didn’t push extra services. There was an ocean-view sauna in both the men’s and women’s changing rooms.

Activities and entertainment

Like most small expedition ships, Venture ’s entertainment was limited. There were high-quality singers and pianists and such in lounges. I’m not sure how many passengers hit the DJ-driven dance floor post-dinner, but some showed up in the Discovery Center for a magician/comedian. (He was just okay.)  On our cruise,  the star was the cruise director, who sang opera.

How was the experience for families?

None was onboard our sail. The ship doesn’t offer youth programming, but when asked, the onboard team said they’ll cater to passengers of all ages.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

This Lima-to-Santiago route was more of a repositioning cruise than an adventuresome one. Unfortunately, we hit some unexpected permit issues and rougher seas that didn’t allow us to enjoy the expected Zodiac and kayak explorations. That said, we had still had some amazing experiences, including flying over Peru’s Nazca Lines, exploring the Atacama Desert (the planet’s driest), and visiting a well-preserved former mining town, now a ghost town. We also what was touted as the world’s oldest mummies, about 8,000 years old. This itinerary is not a common one, more like a one-off; it’s really a way to get “in position” for the Antarctic season. I loved the video that the expedition team filmed during our voyage and screened on our final night; what a way to re-live an adventure. Best of all, we could scan a QR code or download a link so that we could share it with family members or keep it for ourselves. Many expedition lines used to charge for that video, and maybe some still do.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Three cheers for its desalinated water (which can taste awful on expedition ships), which tastes much like fresh spring H2O.  It’s accomplished by reverse osmosis, consuming about 30 percent less energy compared to traditional systems. Filling stations for personal water bottles are everywhere. Even to-go coffee mugs are reusable. Molton Brown liquid soaps in suite bathrooms are refillable; no more single use plastic bottles. Most daily information is available on the Seabourn app and suite televisions, minimizing paper use. On the more technical side, bow thrusters are outfitted with fixed pitch propellers, frequently driving a reduction of energy consumption by 30 percent compared to traditional thrusters. The underwater hull was painted with an ultra-low-friction coating system, which also reduces energy consumption by up to 10 percent. Also, the ship uses dynamic positioning in many cases versus anchoring and disturbing the ocean.

Anything we missed

Perhaps what lingers most in my mind was the expedition team’s passion. I was skeptical before boarding with expedition cruising’s explosion of popularity, and wondering how challenging it must be for so many lines to find qualified personnel. My fears were assuaged by the knowledge and heart of the onboard team. They were eager to share information, not just in lectures or on expeditions, but in one-on-one meetups. Also, not all passengers loved the cruise formal nights; some grumbled that they made little sense on expeditions. A few packed tuxes and seemed happy dressing up. To avoid dressier attire, you can dine more casually in the Colonnade, Club or via room service. I didn’t notice attire censoring in the Restaurant on formal nights; many cruisers sailed by in dressier slacks, with men wearing sport jackets.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

If you want to savor an expedition sail delivering adventure with high-end indulgence, uber-pampering and cushy accommodations, you’ll find Seabourn Venture a worthy choice. If you’re already a Seabourn fan, you’ll particularly appreciate the amenities so similar to the line’s ocean liners. Note that twin Seabourn Pursuit launches in September 2023, meaning even more itineraries to choose from.

What is the drinking age on the Seabourn cruise?

The drinking age on Seabourn cruises is 21 years old. This age restriction applies to all passengers and is strictly enforced throughout the duration of the cruise. Seabourn is committed to providing a safe and responsible environment for all guests, and this policy aligns with international regulations and best practices. It is important for passengers to carry a valid identification card or passport to verify their age when purchasing alcoholic beverages onboard. For further information on Seabourn’s age policy and guidelines, please refer to their official website: www.seabourn.com.

What is the cruise age rule?

Seabourn Cruise Line has established age restrictions and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers. The cruise age rule states that infants under 6 months old are not permitted on board. For luxury cruises, the minimum age requirement is typically 12 months old. However, for transoceanic cruises and cruises with more than 3 consecutive sea days, the minimum age requirement is 2 years old. It is important to note that children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21. Seabourn Cruise Line prioritizes the safety and comfort of all passengers, and understanding their age policy will help you plan your cruise accordingly. While Seabourn caters primarily to adults, children aged 12 and above are welcome on board when accompanied by an adult. However, it’s important to note that Seabourn does not provide specific programs or facilities for children, and the cruise line may not be suitable for younger children. For families interested in a luxury cruise experience with children, alternative cruise lines with dedicated family-friendly amenities may be a better fit. To learn more about Seabourn’s age policy and guidelines, please visit their official website.

Do cruises check your age?

Cruise lines, like Seabourn, have age restrictions in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of their passengers. It is important to note that Seabourn does check the age of their guests before allowing them to board. The minimum age to sail on a Seabourn cruise is 6 months old, and children under the age of 1 are required to have a doctor’s note confirming their fitness for travel. For guests under the age of 18, they must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult. Seabourn also has specific guidelines for guests under the age of 21, stating that they cannot consume alcohol onboard. It’s essential to review the age policy of Seabourn and other cruise lines before booking to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Seabourn cruise contract

Seabourn Cruise Line has a comprehensive age policy in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all guests. The minimum age to sail on a Seabourn cruise is 6 months old, although select itineraries may have different age restrictions. For guests under the age of 18, they must be accompanied by and share a cabin with a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult. Seabourn also offers a range of activities and amenities specifically designed for younger guests, including supervised programs for children and teens. It is important for guests to review Seabourn’s age policy before booking their cruise to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. For more detailed information on Seabourn’s age policy and guidelines, please refer to their official website: https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/faq/age_requirements.

Seabourn Cruise Line is renowned for offering luxurious and unforgettable travel experiences to its guests. However, when planning a cruise vacation, it is important to have a clear understanding of the age restrictions and guidelines set by the cruise line. By familiarizing yourself with these policies, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for all passengers. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the specifics of Seabourn’s age policy, providing you with all the information you need to know.

Seabourn Cruise Line has established age restrictions to ensure the safety and comfort of its guests. The policy states that all passengers must be at least 6 months old to sail on their ships. However, for voyages that include transoceanic crossings or segments longer than 2 consecutive days at sea, the minimum age requirement increases to 12 months. This policy is in place due to the potential health risks associated with long periods at sea for infants.

It is worth noting that Seabourn Cruise Line does not provide childcare facilities or services for children under the age of 2. Therefore, parents or guardians must ensure that they are capable of providing the necessary care and supervision for their young ones throughout the duration of the cruise.

For families traveling with children, Seabourn offers a Kids Program for kids aged 2 and above. This program is available on select voyages and offers a range of activities and entertainment tailored to different age groups. It provides an opportunity for children to engage in age-appropriate activities, make new friends, and have fun while their parents can enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

In addition to the age restrictions, Seabourn Cruise Line also has guidelines in place for the consumption of alcohol onboard. The minimum drinking age is 21 years old, and the cruise line strictly enforces this policy. Passengers who are of legal drinking age will be required to provide valid identification when purchasing alcoholic beverages. It is important to note that Seabourn reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or fails to comply with their alcohol consumption policy.

To ensure a seamless booking process and to avoid any surprises, it is crucial to consider these age restrictions and guidelines when planning your Seabourn cruise. By adhering to these policies, you can rest assured that your vacation will be in compliance with the cruise line’s rules and regulations.

For more information and to stay up-to-date with any changes to Seabourn’s age policy, it is always best to refer directly to their official website. Here you will find the most accurate and reliable information regarding age restrictions, guidelines, and any other pertinent information related to your cruise.

In conclusion, understanding Seabourn Cruise Line’s age policy is essential when planning a cruise vacation. By familiarizing yourself with the age restrictions and guidelines, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers. Remember to check the official Seabourn website for the most up-to-date information and have a fantastic cruise!

Typical Seabourn Cruiser Age?

My wife and I are in our mid 40's. We are experienced cruisers both with and without our kids. We are considering taking the Seabourn Quest from Barcelona to Rome on July 7th (without kids) but have read mixed info on the typical passenger age. We have travelled on SilverSea before and loved it. Can anyone tell tell me what to expect age wise of the fellow passengers on this cruise and a comparison to SilverSea?

We (45 & 31) cruised on the Legend for 7 nights Monte Carlo to Rome last August. The ship appeared to be full so that means 104 couples of which maybe 6 couples were under 50. Most passengers appeared to be in their 50's or 60's. There were a couple of toddlers who were very well supervised by their parents/grandparents and caused no distractions whatsoever.

We were very happy with the demographics of our fellow passengers (as were the other "younger" couples on board) and have booked the Legend again (20 nights this time) this September.

We are 45 and 43 and on the Legend Dec from Dubai to Singapore. There were many more people in the 60's to 70's range. I really think the itinerary has a bit of play with the age group as well more exotic = Older. Europe and Caribbean tend to be younger crowds and also on the larger sisters you also attract some younger people as well.

We have been on Seabourn lots and lots, lucky us, and we were 45 when we started, you will have a ball.

The majority at and beyond the life expectancy of insurance and pension actuarial tables.

Seabourn: where old people cruise in order to visit their parents.

We were on the Pride last March from Bangkok to Hong Kong. Most of the passengers were in the 50-60s age group I think. I don't remember many really old people and there were certainly some that were younger. The ship's entertainment group was younger and a lot of fun. We totally enjoyed meeting many fascinating people of all ages....a guy that had wrtten lyrics for songs we knew, a research physician, the concert pianist (who was on the younger side) and his newly wed wife. We are in our early 60s and active and young at heart and we loved every minute of this cruise and the people we met. I wish I would have been fortunate enough to have been able to sail Seabourne when I was in my 30s and 40s!!

My husband and I are in our early 70's and my no means decrepit, physically or mentally. We are about to embark on our first cruise ( the Odyssey, Istanbul to Venice, May 5) in 25 years. We have spent the last 10 years or so taking walking trips where we typically average 6-9 miles a day. So we are worried that a cruise is going to be too sedentary or "slow" for us. But how else can you see so many countries and so many ports in 2 weeks? That's what's calling us......the itinerary. And we were ready for a vacation change. The only way to find out if cruising is too inactive for us is to try it. Everyone is different and it doesn't have much to do with age.

lincslady

Just a thought, greencardwpb - in the summer holiday season when schools are out (July and August particularly) you may find some older children on board. Their parents will probably be youngish, but it depends whether you enjoy being amongst children and teenagers. We are able to cruise out of high season, and I must admit now avoid these months - but we are just a couple of old fogies! However, we have made friends on board with the young dancers, younger passengers and some even older than us. Age doesn't seem to matter much to most on board. From my experience Seabourn passengers are, as a rule, on average younger and more open minded in attitude than those on Silversea. (Hope no-one whose favourite is Silversea reads this).

Ravenscroft

From my experience Seabourn passengers are, as a rule, on average younger and more open minded in attitude than those on Silversea. (Hope no-one whose favourite is Silversea reads this).

Someone whose favourite (so far) is Silversea did just read this! :D

I find this very interesting as I've met some lovely people on Silversea, not much of an age difference (I'm 50) and not closed minded. Assuming that's the opposite of open minded in this context. However we have only done Med and Caribbean cruises, which another poster has already commented on. So perhaps younger demographic than other itineraries.

My husband and I aren't really into doing a lot of socialising on holiday. We're happy to have a drink with others in the bar, or a dinner now and then with another couple or two, but we mostly prefer to have dinner with just each other for company. Due to business commitments we don't really have much quality time together in our day-to-day lives so on holiday it tends to be all about 'us'.

So, all of that said, we've just booked our first Seabourn cruise, :D and I'm wondering from your comments if perhaps we've made a mistake and people will think us anti-social or something. This is something we enjoyed about Silversea; that we can socialise if we wish, or we can enjoy our precious together time if we wish. I had been hoping that Seabourn would be similar in that regard.

Seabourn is precisely like that. One does what one wants.

Thanks Jane, that's much the impression I've formed from voracious reading of this board, reviews here, external blogs etc. I think that's one of the benefits for me of a luxury line, the freedom to either go and do your own thing, or to choose to join with other guests who are like minded and well travelled.

My partner and I cruised for the first time on the Odyssey last fall from Istanbul to Athens. No kids on board and most couples in their 60s and 70s.

It didn't really matter though. Everyone was active and mobile. Considering the number of tenders we had there was never an issue with boarding and disembarking. Shows were well attended and there was a good crowd at the club and observation lounge in the evenings.

Their parents are on Silversea :D:D

Ravenscroft - apologies if I made it sound as though you had to be madly social all the time on SB. Not so at all, we too mostly prefer to dine on our own most evenings, and no-one minds. Obviously I can only speak from our own experience of Silversea and Seabourn, and all cruises have their own ambiance depending on who is aboard. I imagine that Caribbean cruises generally attract a younger set, but I don't think this applies to the Med., Northern Europe or the rest of the world.

Reading people's opinions even of the same cruise, it is clear that we all have widely different views and attitudes depending on our personalities, and our views of any problem we may encounter which others do not, or do not notice so much. Someone on the Odyssey out of LA to Australia etc. obviously hated it; others thoroughly enjoyed it and made light of any slight problems there were. Maybe reading all comments, and discounting the most and least favourable, is the way to go?

Age. It's all in the head; as they say, you are as old as you feel you are.

Me, I have been 18 ever since I was 14, or so I like to think. Many people are old before their time, in attitude, outlook or even physically.

While the SB demographic is mostly 50 -65 in chronological years, many cruisers are very young at heart, lively, witty, intelligent company and great fun to be with. I've been amazed on Rock the Boat nights to see couples well into their 60s take to floor to jive. And a conversation with someone who has a deep and broad experience of life, a sense of history, is well travelled and well-read is far more rewarding than one with someone who thinks the world began in 1972.

When we first started to do 'luxury' travel we were in our mid forties and often found ourselves mixing with folks 10 -20 years older. It was great - it made us feel 'young' again to be in the company of so many people older than us.

This is a question that comes up not inferquently and I think that some people have a very narrow conception of what it means to be 'old'. People who travel with Seabourn want to enjoy themselves, the vessels are not floating retirement homes, or stuffy private clubs. There is no reason for any adult to feel out of place. Just because someone has reached the age of 70 does not mean they are going to behave like a dowager aunt or the Maggie Smith character in Downton Abbey. You never know, the 65 year-old sitting next to you on a hosted table might have once been sliding in the mud at Woodstock, manning the barricades in Paris, fighting for survival in the jungles of Vietnam....

Flamin' June - You are so right in all you say.

We had a blast on SB Quest last year on the TA, we found we could meet "new friends" or just pass by with a few words. One day we fancied snuggling up in one of those "sunbeds for two" on the pool deck - mind you when we did it was amazing how many stopped by to see what we "were up to" in there!!! LOL! We almost put a "do not disturb" notice up! ;):D

There are lots of places to escape to if you want some couple time and lots to be sociable in. When we spent a couple of days hanging out in our stateroom - it was a bit frisky and we just chose to loll about really, reading, watching the fab selection of movies and ordering pizza and ice-cream - all the stuff you don't get time to do at home with other demands on your time, like work! We felt like teenagers again especially as we didn't have to cook, clear up or make the bed! LOL! We did pick up our dirty clothes though!!!! But when we "surfaced", there were lots of "where have you two been????".

To compare to our Silverseas Whisper TA the year before, we found the crowd on the Quest just a bit more fun (well a lot actually) although I must be very quick to point out that we met some truly wonderful people on the Whisper, it's just that they were all tucked up in bed and the bars were all shut by 11! Or maybe there was some secret party going on somewhere that we hadn't been invited to! (Think not!) But again we would certainly try SS again if the itinerary was what we wanted.

I always say never judge a book by it's cover ..... so greencardwpb - our message to you is go, you'll have a wonderful time and I hope you meet as many engaging, interesting and friendly people as we did. :D

I would concur with the above comments. We are in our late 40's and find that some of the appeal has been the diversity of age on board. We have had many a great meal at random tables and have had some fantastic romantic nights on our own. We have also sat in the club tIl 3 am with company ranging from 25 to 75 (didn't meet them for breakfast however). For the most part, the cruise can be what you decide to make it. We look forward to visiting the Quest again next fall for 20 days and look forward to the things we know and also the things (and people) we have yet to learn about. Also agree that people reading this would be wise to throw out some of the best and worst reviews they read for an accurate picture.

Thank you lincslady, for your reassurance.

That's the fun of trying another line for the first time - there is much anticipation but there are also one or two 'what if's?'. I had to work very hard to persuade my husband to try Seabourn, as he's the type who likes to stay with the familiar. Because it's been me 'selling' it to him, I'm feeling a teeny bit of pressure! I'm confident that we'll have a wonderful cruise but I am guilty, sometimes, of misinterpreting a comment here and there.

Bostonactor,

Once of the reasons my husband and I perfer the Med cruises( though we have als cruise Seabourn in the Med, Baltic, Norway, SE Asia and the Caribbean) is because there are few if any sea days. We are avid hikers and love hopping off the ship every day in a new port and taking a long hike( also a good way to help counter some of those delciious Seabourn food and wine calories). So no, I don't think you will find it too sedentary.

MiniSchnauzer

We're 36/42 and this year will be our 3rd Seabourn Cruise on the Legend. Ages tend to be 30+ and a great diverse crowd with interesting people. Hardly any kids, maybe 5 on the past ships that were extremely well behaved...

The weather will be excellent in the Summer time for a great sailing!

TravellingPearnz

My husband & I ventured for the first time into luxury cruising a few years ago for my 50th birthday. Since then we've been blessed enough to experience both Seabourn & Silversea with our next cruise on 4th May on Quest. We are in touch and marrying up experiences and future cruises with people from 30 to well into their 80s often in the same social groups from previous cruises. That said we have also clocked up some of the most romantic & intimate memories a deux on both lines. You will have THE best time and meet friends for life...even if never actually physically being in the same place again. Can't wait to hear how you get on

  • 6 years later...

On our recent SB cruise in the Baltic (Ovation), I would say that the average age was mid 60s-mid 70s. There WAS a couple in their 30s onboard as well as a few in their 40s and 50s. But, I would say mostly older. We enjoy all ages.

Things must be bad here if you have to resurect a thread from six years ago

Sent from my SM-G955F using Forums mobile app

I don't know how that happened! LOL

An age-related mishap perchance? ;p

While aboard Ponant’s all-inclusive ships, you can anticipate exceptional French cuisine, delicious fine wines, complimentary Champagne and spirits, room service, and more.

Of course, if you need further inspiration to look into the cruise line, perhaps the fact that three-mast yacht, Le Ponant, is part of the Relais & Châteaux portfolio will do the trick.
