Regina King opens up in 1st TV interview since late son’s death

King spoke with Robin Roberts in a "GMA" interview Thursday.

Oscar-winning actress Regina King is speaking out for the first time about her son's death over two years ago.

King sat down with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts for an exclusive interview and shared how her late son Ian Alexander Jr., who died by suicide in January 2022 at the age of 26, is still an influence on her.

PHOTO: When asked what these last two years have been like for her, King said "grief is a journey."

When asked what these last two years have been like for her, King said "grief is a journey."

"I'm a different person, you know, now than I was Jan. 19," the Academy Award winner told Roberts. "Grief is a journey, you know? I understand that grief is love that has no place to go."

Regina King honors late son Ian Alexander Jr. on his 27th birthday: 'Shine bright, my guiding light'

PHOTO: Regina King sat down with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts for an exclusive interview.

King said her late son, whom she honored by wearing orange -- his favorite color -- at the Oscars, struggled with his mental health.

"When it comes to depression, people expect it to look a certain way and they expect it to look heavy," King told Roberts. "And people expect that … to have to experience this and not be able to have the time to just sit with Ian's choice, which I respect and understand, you know, that he didn't wanna be here anymore, that's a hard thing for other people to receive because they did not live our experience, did not live Ian's journey."

PHOTO: Regina King and Ian Alexander Jr attend the 45th NAACP Image Awards presented by TV One at Pasadena Civic Auditorium on February 22, 2014 in Pasadena, California.

As a mom, King said seeing Ian with his struggles still made her "so angry with God."

"I was so angry with God. You know, why would that weight be given to Ian?" King said.

"With all of the things that we had gone through with the therapy, with psychiatrists and programs and Ian was like, 'I'm tired of talking, Mom,'" she recalled.

Two years after her son's death, King admits she still struggles with acceptance.

"Sometimes, you know, a lot of guilt comes over me," she said. "When a parent loses a child, you still wonder, 'What could I have done so that wouldn't have happened?'"

"I know that I share this grief with everyone. But no one else is Ian's mom, you know? Only me," she continued. "And so, it's mine. And the sadness will never go away. It'll always be with me. And I think I saw somewhere, the sadness is a reminder of how much he means to me, you know?"

Today, King said regardless of her grief, she isn't shying away from talking about Ian, who often accompanied her on the red carpet in the past. She said she still feels her son's presence often, in what she calls "Ian-spirations" or little moments from the universe that remind her that he's still here.

PHOTO: Regina King and Ian Alexander Jr. attend the 2019 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on November 24, 2019 in Los Angeles.

"I know that it's important to me to honor Ian in the totality of who he is. Speak about him in the present because he is always with me and the joy and happiness that he gave all of us," King said.

"My favorite thing about myself is being Ian's mom," she added. "And I can't say that with a smile, with tears, with all of the emotion that comes with that. I can't do that if I did not respect the journey."

On returning to acting with 'Shirley'

King told Roberts her starring role as the first Black congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm, in her upcoming film "Shirley" is dedicated to her late son.

"It's been a 15-year journey since we were gonna tell Shirley's story to now it actually happening. And I think 15 years ago, I wasn't ready to play Shirley. I may have thought that I was then but I wasn't ready. I needed to live more life," King said.

PHOTO: Regina King is speaking out for the first time about her son's death.

King's sister Reina King also plays a key role in the film as a co-producer of the biopic that chronicles Chisholm's political rise in 1972 as she becomes the first Black woman to run for president.

"We felt like there were so many people who did not know who Shirley Chisholm is, who she was … and that bugged us," King said of their motivation to bring the trailblazer's story to life.

"When you're a first, when you set out to do something that no one else has done before, there's no example of that for you. That's a lonely road to travel," she added.

King said the timing behind the making of the movie felt right, ahead of an election year.

"We were like, 'No, it needs to live and be in the space now so that if it's going to inspire anyone, especially young people to be involved with the political process, then we've done something right and we've also honored Shirley and we've followed through with what Shirley is -- unbought and unbossed,'" King said.

"Shirley" will open in select theaters Friday and premiere on Netflix globally on March 22.

Oprah Winfrey opens up about why she started using a weight-loss drug: 'Nothing else I can do'

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Oprah Winfrey is sharing some of the powerful lessons she learned after hosting a TV special on Monday night about obesity and the growing popularity of weight-loss drugs.

Appearing on CNN's "King Charles" alongside co-hosts Gayle King and Charles Barkley, Winfrey got candid about some of the more surprising moments during the ABC News special, titled "An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution."

The "greatest reward" from doing the special, she said, was learning how weight stigma impacts men, as well.

"It’s interesting to me because, being a woman all these years and having suffered myself up and down yo-yoing, I never think about the men, because I always thought men were treated differently," Winfrey explained. "I always thought ... if you’re 100 pounds overweight and you’re a guy, you’re not going to be ostracized in the same way (as) ... women being overweight 100 pounds."

"So, to hear from so many men who also feel a sense of freedom and liberation to now make a choice that they feel is healthier for them has been the most rewarding for me," she added.

An expert on the special also taught Winfrey a metaphor that helped her better understand how obesity is a disease that makes people gain weight and requires medical treatment — something she struggled with until she started taking a weight-loss medication.

"When the doctor said on (the special) that (obesity is) like holding your breath underwater and trying not to rise, to me, that is the greatest metaphor," Winfrey said.

"All these years, I realized that’s what I have been doing. You go on the diet, you’re trying not to rise, and then you rise again, and you can’t even understand why. And before you know it, you’re 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 30 pounds. And all of us (who have obesity) have done this."

"You have your limit. ... I’m not going to go over a certain number. Then you go over that number. Then you say, I’m not going to go over 5 pounds over that. And ... you’re always going to go back because if you have the propensity for it, if you carry the marker for it, that’s what’s going to happen in your body."

Winfrey also gave a glimpse at why she ultimately decided to start using a weight-loss medication: "I couldn’t work out anymore. I can’t climb any faster or run any faster. I was down to eating one meal a day. There’s nothing else I can do."

“If you feel like being in a bigger body is great, and you don’t want to do anything about that, and you feel fine, that is beautiful. I really admire people who really believe that," she continued. "Whatever works for you. One of the reasons I wanted to do (the special) is (to) let people make their own choices for their health and well-being."

Oprah TV's special on weight-loss drugs

Winfrey's prime-time special, “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution,” aired March 18 and was recorded in front of a live audience in a studio that looked similar to the set she used for “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which ended in 2011 .

“Let’s stop the shaming and blaming,” Winfrey, 70, said as she talked about the obesity epidemic with patients and doctors. “The one thing I hope people come away with is knowing that it’s a disease and it’s in the brain.”

About 42% of Americans have obesity, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

The special examined how the anti-obesity drugs could stop the epidemic and improve the health of this population, not just change the number on the scale. But there’s also concern about the drugs’ side effects, cost and weight regain after people stop taking them.

Toward the end of the one-hour program, Winfrey got emotional when she recalled how she used to think of herself and her weight for most of her life, before she understood that obesity is a disease.

"You no longer blame yourself," she explained. "When I tell you how many times I have blamed myself because you think, 'I'm smart enough to figure this out,' and then to hear all along, it's you fighting your brain."

She also recalled how she "starved" herself for five months before bringing out the infamous wagon of fat on her talk show in 1988.

"After losing 67 pounds on liquid diet, the next day, the very next day, I started to gain it back," Winfrey said.

But now, Winfrey said she's learned so much about the shame and stigma that come with having obesity, and how she wants to fight it.

"All these years, I thought all of the people who never had to diet were just using their willpower and they were for some reason stronger than me," she said.

"But now I realize y'all weren't even thinking about the food," she quipped. "It's not that you had the willpower. You weren't even thinking about it. You weren't obsessing about it."

The media mogul confirmed in December 2023 that she’s taking a weight-loss medication , though she didn’t specify which one.

Winfrey, who has appeared visibly slimmer in recent months, has said she’s also eating a healthy diet and exercising, including hiking 3 to 5 miles a day or running.

Oprah's weight loss journey

Winfrey, who has been open about her own struggle with excess weight for decades, calls it "a very personal topic for me."

In 2023, the former talk show host said she once thought taking a weight-loss drug would be “the easy way out.” But she changed her mind after hosting a panel discussion with obesity physicians and realizing she has a predisposition for being overweight “that no amount of willpower is going to control,” she noted.

Like other patients taking a weight-loss drug, she found the medication quiets constant thoughts about eating, a phenomenon known as food noise .

“For the people who think that this could be the relief and support and freedom that you’ve been looking for your whole life, bless you because there’s space for all points of view,” Winfrey said during the program.

As she approached her 70th birthday, her No. 1 concern was her health, Winfrey told People in December 2023.

“The fact that there’s a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift, and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for," she said.

"I’m absolutely done with the shaming from other people and particularly myself."

How weight-loss drugs work

Ozempic and Mounjaro are Type 2 diabetes treatments that come with weight-loss as a side effect. Many people have been using them off-label for that purpose.

That led to versions of those medications — Wegovy and Zepbound — which are specifically approved for the treatment of obesity.

The drugs work by mimicking the hormones the body releases when a person eats food, as TODAY.com previously reported . People have reduced appetite, and when they do eat, they feel full sooner.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, targets one hormone, known as GLP-1.

Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound, targets two different hormones, GIP and GLP-1, which can lead to even greater weight loss, research shows.

Patients can expect to lose about 15% to 20% of their body weight, based on results from clinical trials funded by the pharmaceutical companies. But the treatments come with side effects , most commonly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. Much more serious side effects including pancreatitis are also possible.

People self-inject the drugs once a week and have to keep taking them to maintain weight loss.

They’re expensive without insurance — more than $1,000 per month. Weight-loss drugs are not covered by Medicare and often not covered by commercial health insurance.

Park Gyubin talks about her K-pop career in an exclusive interview

Interview: K-Pop Singer Gyubin Shares 2024 Comeback Plans & Her Life Changing Experiences

By Arpita Adhya

ComingSoon Entertainment journalist Arpita Adhya talked to K-pop’s ‘Super Rookie’ artist Park Gyubin in an exclusive interview, who has recently made her grand debut with the single “Really Like You.” From Gyubin’s early days that inspired her to be a singer to the life-changing experience of joining the world of K-pop, the 17-year-old rising icon candidly shares about her life where music is always present.

Gyubin officially debuted with “Really Like You” on January 17, 2024. The refreshing single and Gyubin’s stellar vocals made the song an early hit, garnering over a million views since its release.

Before her debut, Gyubin released a collaborative single, “Scribble,” with prominent South Korean vocalist Wonstein. While talking about the song, the K-pop singer shared how recording it changed her life.

Gyubin talks all about her music career in exclusive interview

Park Gyubin’s journey in K-pop

Arpita : what inspired you to join k-pop and pursue a music career.

Gyubin: I always say it, but it was natural for me. I grew up in a house filled with music, and everyone loves music, especially my father, who plays guitar. So, I grew up in an environment where I listened to old pop songs and was surrounded by a love for music. When I got into elementary school, I learned about Karaoke and enjoyed it with my friends. I realized I enjoy singing in front of others and performing in general.

So, I’d say there’s no specific inspiration or motivation for me, but it all felt a part of a very natural transition. What pushed me more was watching other artists perform on TV in elementary school or middle school. It inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming a singer. I could never think about my life without music.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by GYUBIN (@baggyubin73)

Arpita : Within a short span since your debut with ‘Really Like You,’ your nickname is ‘Super Rookie.’ Do you think that adds extra pressure to achieve big goals early in your career?

Gyubin : It’d be a lie to say I don’t feel any pressure. It is a huge word, but the nickname ‘Super Rookie’ is very meaningful to me because it is the ultimate compliment for any new artist. It makes me happy, motivates, and makes me proud whenever I hear it. But pressure definitely comes with it. I must always do my best and present myself as my best self.

But at the same time, I still appreciate that word because it is my biggest motivation. I always need to carry that nickname and keep feeling that gratitude that comes with it because it shows how many people really love my music and support me. So, I’d never try to lose that nickname and work hard to fit that name.

Arpita : For your pre-debut single, Scribble, you collaborated with Wonstein, a well-known vocalist. What was your biggest learning lesson from the experience?

Gyubin : That was an unforgettable experience, as it was my first-ever track release. This might be a bit of a TMI, but I first met Wonstein on the day of Scribble’s music video shooting. That was our first time saying hi and seeing each other in person. But then we had to be in a situation where we were enacting the role of two lovers.

We had to create a sweet atmosphere for the music video, so it felt pretty long to make that 3-minute music video, which felt like three hours! (Smiles) But we opened up, and he started talking about music and giving me advice, so we got closer rather quickly.

Later, I had to do additional song recording, and Wonstein came over to the studio to direct the recording himself. So we were in the same studio exchanging opinions and ideas, and I learned a lot from him as a vocalist. One of the most crucial advice he gave me was to loosen up, not be too nervous while singing, try to get in the groove, and dance out a little, which will significantly help you.

So, I’d say “Scribble” is a very special song because I became a different person after working on it. I learned so much from that experience and am forever thankful for the opportunity.

Arpita : Tell us the story behind your debut single, “Really Like You,” did you face any challenges while recording the song?

Gyubin : Since “Really Like You” was announced as my first debut single, I initially felt the pressure, thinking I needed to do really well and prove myself. But as I continued practicing and recording, I focused more on the lyrics and emotions. Finally, when I was recording the song, to bring out the song’s sentiment, I was thinking about my crush from elementary school (smiles). I kept thinking about the boy and the emotions I felt.

They say you get tired of the same song when you repeatedly listen to it, but it was the opposite for me. The more I listened to the song, the more I fell in love with it. So, one of the challenges of the recording “Really Like You” was bringing out that heart-fluttering emotion of being in love. I thought of my old crush to channel that feeling for the whole three minutes of recording the debut song. Rather than focusing on the person, I thought about happy memories, which could bring out the warmth and positivity throughout the song.

Arpita : Who are your role models?

Gyubin : IU and Taylor Swift are my role models among current singers because I get inspired by their journeys of continuing to push themselves. They are never afraid to take on new challenges, and the way they communicate on stage with the audience is something I want to do one day.

I also listen to old Korean vocalists like Sung Sikyung, whose musical color is my taste. So, I also want to become a singer who can sing for a long time and continue to push myself.

Arpita : Apart from singing, are you interested in acting or writing songs?

Gyubin: Absolutely! I have always wanted to be a singer-songwriter, so I am working on composing and writing lyrics. It’s not been released, but I am working on some self-composed songs I’d like to include in my future album someday. Hopefully, in the future, I can also grow to be an artist who gives songs to other budding artists.

Also, I learned a bit about acting because I wanted to improve my facial expressions when performing. That’s when I fell in love with acting and its charms. So, one day, I can maybe try musicals, movies, or dramas; that will be a dream come true.

Arpita : Tell us what fans can expect this year after such a grand debut. Are there any plans to release an album?

Gyubin : After receiving all the love and support for my debut single, “Really Like You,” I was inspired to release more music. So, this year, I plan to mix more official and unofficial activities. I am focusing on my solo music and other side projects. So this will be released soon, probably by next month. It is a collaborative single with Nell’s Kim Jong Wan. He is a gifted vocalist, and this song will be a very different concept, leaning more towards the ballad genre. So I hope you look forward to that.

I also plan to release more music, including “Really Like You,” my official solo track, in the summer. In addition to singing and promoting, I want to connect with fans through social media and radio appearances.

#규빈 #GYUBIN #REALLYLIKEYOU #REDDIT #ASKMEANYTHING https://t.co/H1ZHXfTrXo pic.twitter.com/MgNFY3uqDw — GYUBIN (@official_gyubin) March 21, 2024

Arpita : Do you have any message for fans loving your music and pouring their support?

Gyubin : I cannot even find the right words to describe how thankful I am for the fans who have shown me love and support. Positive comments from fans who have told me they are listening to my music have comforted me. When fans tell me they feel happy listening to my music, that makes me very happy. Their comments brighten my day, and that is why I feel so happy these days.

So, I want to be a singer who can perform for fifty years or more. I want to share more charm and excitement with fans as a musician and an artist. So please, stay along my journey, and thank you so much for your love and support. I love you all (heart sign with both hands).

Regina King appeared on “Good Morning America” on Thursday to give her first TV interview since the death of her son, Ian Alexander Jr. , in January 2022.

Speaking with Robin Roberts, the Oscar-winning actor said she is “a different person now” following his death two years ago.

“Grief is a journey, you know. I understand that grief is love that has no place to go,” she said. “I know that it’s important to me to honor Ian in the totality of who he is, speak about him in the present, because he is always with me and the joy and happiness that he gave all of us.”

“When it comes to depression, people expect it to look a certain way — they expect it to look heavy,” King said. “To have to experience this and not be able to have the time to just sit with Ian’s choice, which I respect and understand … He didn’t want to be here anymore, and that’s a hard thing for other people to receive because they did not live our experience, did not live Ian’s journey.”

Through tears, King continued to open up about her grieving process, saying that initially she “was so angry with God.”

“Why would that weight be given to Ian? Of all of the things that we had gone through — therapy, psychiatrists, programs — and Ian was like, ‘I’m tired of talking, Mom,'” she said, adding: “Sometimes, a lot of guilt comes over me. When a parent loses a child, you still wonder, ‘What could I have done so that wouldn’t have happened?’ I know that I share this grief with everyone, but no one else is Ian’s mom, you know? Only me. So it’s mine. And the sadness will never go away. It will always be with me.”

‘My 600-lb Life' How's S12 William Keefer Today?

My 600-lb Life  Season 12 featured the story of William Keefer. He appeared on the show at 620 pounds. The Texas native had a difficult past, similar to many of Dr. Now’s patients. He resorted to food as his source of happiness, which ultimately led to his obesity. Dr. Now also gave William multiple chances to turn his life around, but it seems he wasn’t able to impress the bariatric surgeon. Keep reading to see what happened to him after the show.

My 600-lb Life : William Keefer’s Rough Past

William’s father left before he was born, creating emptiness in his life. The My 600-lb Life  star tried to put his attention into sports. However, he suffered from a torn ACL, crushing his dreams of becoming an athlete. William got depressed, and things got much worse after his mother moved to a different state.

His grandparents took care of him for many years. He later got married to a woman whom he only dated for three months. They ended up in a divorce, making things a lot more difficult for William. Due to this, he used food to cope with the negativity . He claims that he would drink six cans of soda within a few hours.

William’s Weight Loss Journey

William Keefer was able to bring himself down to 592 pounds by the time he first met Dr. Now. However, he struggled multiple times trying to achieve the requirements for him to qualify for bariatric surgery. In his last weigh-in, he only lost four pounds, and Dr. Now wasn’t happy about it. The My 600-lb Life  star even tried to laugh it off. But the surgeon showed his iconic tough love by telling him that there was nothing funny about it.

My 600-lb Life : What Happened To William Keefer After The Show?

Not much is known about William today. He currently doesn’t have any social media accounts. But it was reported that his LinkedIn showed he once worked at Subway as an assistant manager and a crew member at Dunkin’.

Dr. Now has also confronted William Keefer during his episode for lying and making excuses during their sessions. The surgeon even recommended that he consult a therapist regarding his honesty issues. The My 600-lb Life star later sought a psychotherapist, Dr. Matthew Paradise, who learned more details about his heartbreaking divorce.

Where Is Delana Boyer From 'My 600-lb Life' Now? She Says She's "Beginning to Live Again"

Delana Boyer got off to a rough start in her weight loss journey, but quickly redeemed herself and showed Dr. Now that she was serious.

During Season 12 of TLC's My 600-lb Life , we've got to follow the weight loss journeys of various individuals struggling with obesity, including Krystal S' and William Keefer .

In the season's third episode, we were introduced to Delana Boyer from Greenville, Tenn., who has repeatedly run into rough patches time and again, causing her to turn to food.

Delana didn't have the easiest life growing up. Her first cousin raised her after her biological mom, Sharon, stepped out of the picture. Sharon did come back into her life when she was six and actually ended up kidnapping Delana for a year before returning her back to her cousin.

At age 20, Delana got pregnant, but her partner at the time was abusive, so she left him. When it came time to deliver her son, she received some heartbreaking news: he was a full-term stillborn. "It was the hardest moment of my life," Delana said.

Delana got remarried again and gave birth to a boy, but her husband divorced her shortly after and took custody of their son. At the time, Delana didn't have an attorney and couldn't fight back.

She married once more and had a daughter, Savannah. However, Savannah's father also turned out to be abusive, so Delana left him and got full custody of Savannah.

Delana raised Savannah until she was 12 years old, but they had a fight, and Savannah left to stay her uncle. Savannah, now 19, refuses to move back in with Delana because she's embarrassed about her weight.

After Savannah left home, Delana tried online dating and met her current husband, James, whom she has been married to for six years. As he says in the episode, he feels more like a caretaker than a husband, as he is constantly tending to Delana because of her weight.

Delana, who doesn't leave the house because of her weight and needs assistance moving around it, weighed in at 646 pounds at the beginning of the episode. "The first thought that I have when I open my eyes is I made it to another day. I didn't die in my sleep," she said in the episode.

Finally, Delana was ready to make a change in her life. She began working with the show's resident surgeon, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, aka Dr. Now , in Houston, Texas, over the course of a year.

Where is Delana Boyer now?

Delana's weight loss journey didn't get off without a hitch. At her first weigh-in with Dr. Now, she was supposed to have lost 50 pounds, and instead, she gained five pounds. However, that setback really seemed to push Delana to get things right the next time. The next time she saw Dr. Now, she was 578 pounds and was approved for bariatric surgery.

At the time of her procedure, she weighed 539 pounds, and post-surgery, she was on track to lose 20 pounds a month. In some of Delana's last scenes on the show, she is seen walking better than ever and can go out on dates with her husband again. A quick glance at Delana's Facebook profile shows she still seems to be doing well in 2024.

Posted by Delana Boyer on  Wednesday, December 13, 2023

While Delana's current weight is unclear, she seems happier and healthier in recent pictures. Delana appears to now live in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Leading up to her episode's release, she shared a few words on Facebook to viewers: "While watching, please remember that I am a real person, that this is really my life, that this was the lowest point in my life, and that I am beginning to live again! I am still a work in progress. I'm not where I want to be, but I’m not where I used to be either!"

So by now pretty much everyone who knows me knows that I have filmed an episode for TLC’s hit show “My 600lb Life.”... Posted by Delana Boyer on  Monday, March 18, 2024

It looks like Delana may not have abandoned all of her bad habits, but she is still moving forward and only thinking positive thoughts, which is great to hear.

As the show notes in the beginning, the chances of long-term success for people on the show are less than five percent. However, any progress is progress, and we wish Delana the best.
