  • Tailored Coverage for Over-50s: Staysure specializes in offering comprehensive travel insurance for mature travelers, making it a popular choice for the over-50s demographic.
  • Coverage for Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Many insurers do not cover pre-existing medical conditions, or they charge hefty premiums to do so. However, Staysure prides itself on providing inclusive policies that consider a range of medical conditions.

Staysure Travel Insurance: Customer Reviews

When it comes to gauging the quality and reliability of a service, there’s no better source than customer reviews. Staysure, with its Trustpilot rating of 4.8 out of 5, is lauded for its customer service, comprehensive coverage , and ease of use.

Many reviews highlight the empathetic and efficient customer service during the claims process. Customers also appreciate the simple and straightforward process of policy purchase and renewal.

However, as with all services, Staysure is not without criticism. Some customers have raised concerns over premium hikes upon renewal, especially for travelers with existing medical conditions.

It’s always important to read all terms and conditions and understand the price structure before committing to a policy.

Staysure Travel Insurance vs. Other Providers

Every travel insurance provider has its strengths and weaknesses, and Staysure is no exception. It shines in its comprehensive coverage, specifically tailored to the over-50s and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

However, younger travelers or those in excellent health may find more competitive rates with other insurers. Therefore, it’s crucial to shop around and compare policies before making a decision.

In the end, the best travel insurance for you will depend on your personal needs, travel plans, and budget. Consider what aspects of coverage are most important to you and choose a policy that ticks all your boxes.

Whether that’s Staysure or another provider, the important thing is that you travel with the peace of mind you deserve.

So, there you have it. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of Staysure Travel Insurance and can make an informed decision about whether it’s the right choice for your travel needs.

Remember, the best travel insurance policy is the one that gives you the coverage you need at a price you can afford. Safe travels!

Staysure pros and cons

staysure golf travel insurance

Whether you’re going on a stag do in Europe or visiting your daughter in Australia, you should always get a travel insurance policy that will cover you and the possessions you’re taking away.

Like other insurers, Staysure has a wide range of policies. Much like different factors of sun lotion, some offer basic levels of protection for you and your possessions, while others offer really comprehensive coverage.

In this guide we break down all the different travel insurance options you can get with Staysure, before we assess whether it’s any good as a travel insurance company.

Staysure was started back in 2004, and began with the aim of providing comprehensive and affordable travel insurance for people over the age of 50. Whether they live in the UK or they’re an expat.

These days it does more than just insurance, and has branched out into offering holidays and cruises too.

Who underwrites Staysure?

Staysure is mainly underwritten by ERV, an Ergo Group Company registered in Germany as Europäische Reiseversicherung A.G. It is authorised by the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BAFIN) and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Meanwhile it is subject to limited regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority.

However you should read your policy documents to double check, as not all of its travel insurance sections are underwritten by ERV.

Staysure offers several types of travel insurance cover. They are listed below with a selection of their features.

  • Single trip
  • Annual cover
  • Backpacker cover
  • Cruise cover
  • Winter sports cover
  • Worldwide cover
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Family cover

Heading away on just the one holiday this year? You’ll want single trip cover if so. With Staysure a single trip deal will look like this:

  • No upper age limit.
  • Declare pre-existing health conditions through its quick online quote process.
  • Get unlimited emergency medical cover.
  • You pay more to go to certain regions, such as the Far East and North America.
  • 24/7 medical emergency helpline.

Going away more than just the once this year? Maybe you’re going skiing and heading abroad in the summer too? Taking out a multi-trip (otherwise known as annual) policy could save you time and money. You’ll only have to sort your insurance out once, and it could be cheaper than getting multiple single-trip policies. Here’s what Staysure’s deal will offer:

  • Get unlimited protection for medical expenses abroad.
  • Pay extra for certain regions, for instance, the Far East and North America.
  • Maximum 50 consecutive days away if under 70.
  • Maximum 35 consecutive days away if over 70.

Heading into the great unknown for the adventure of a lifetime? Backpacking cover is tailor made for gap years and the intrepid travellers. With Staysure your policy will have the following features:

  • Only available for Super Economy and Economy cover.
  • Maximum travel time of 18 months.
  • You can return home 3 times for a maximum of 7 days each.
  • Cover only for ages 18-60.
  • Up to £2m emergency medical cover.

Heading off on a golfing holiday? Don’t let any unexpected hiccups get in the way of you and the green. With Staysure you don’t need to buy golf insurance, as a basic policy will cover personal liability and person accident while playing golf. However getting an additional golf insurance deal will mean:

  • Cover for your clubs, bags and trolley against theft.
  • Compensation if you need to hire golf equipment because yours was stolen or lost.
  • Hole-in-one cover so you can celebrate properly on the 19th hole.
  • Protection if you can’t play because of injury, illness or poor weather.

Going on a long-awaited cruise this year? Staysure cruise cover will make sure you and your possessions are protected, even if it isn’t all plain sailing. While it is an additional policy and you’ll have to pay more, it could be worth it. The key features of this policy include:

  • Can only get as an add-on to a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
  • Cover if circumstances beyond your control mean you miss your port departure, the itinerary changes, or you’re confined to your cabin for medical reasons.
  • Replacement for any personal items or important documents (such as a passport) that are lost or taken.

Going skiing or snowboarding? You’ll want to fully enjoy the slopes without fretting about losing your gear or having a serious accident. With winter sports cover you’ll be fully protected and get financial help should anything happen. Here are the key features of Staysure’s deal.

  • Upper age limit of 71.
  • Policy pays for hire equipment if yours is lost or stolen.
  • Cover for your ski pass being lost, stolen or damaged.
  • Cover for unused part of ski pack if you fall ill or are injured.
  • Policy pays for you to travel to different slopes if piste is closed.
  • Cover pays for extra accommodation and travel in the event of an avalanche or landslide.
  • Medical assistance 24/7.

Whether you’re going around the world in 80 days or heading to Australia in your gap year, you will probably have to pay extra to get worldwide cover. Here’s what you’ll get with Staysure:

  • Emergency repatriation should you need to be flown home quickly.
  • Financial protection should you need medical treatment abroad.
  • A medical emergency helpline you can use 24/7.
  • Get important documents such as your passport or travel tickets replaced if they are lost or stolen.

Staysure specialises in insurance for over 50s, so it will try to cater insurance for anyone with pre-existing health issues. Staysure will decide whether it will cover you following a health screening and should you be approved the policy will include:

  • Payment towards any medical expenses if you are taken ill whilst you’re away.
  • Quick and easy repatriation if and when you need it.
  • Cover should you need to cancel your holiday due to health problems.

If you’re travelling as a family you’ll want to protect every single one of you. Taking out a family policy will save you considerable amounts of time, as you won’t need to take out insurance for each member of your clan, and the policy will include:

  • Cover for any children under the age of 18 with a family or single parent family policy.
  • Get unlimited emergency medical cover if someone in the family falls ill or gets injured abroad.
  • A medical emergency helpline that is in operation 24/7.
  • You can receive help if you miss a departure, your car breaks down once you’ve left home or public transport is delayed.

Staysure doesn’t offer loads of different levels of cover. While you can get add-on policies such as winter sports cover, when it comes to buying the main insurance deal, you have to decide whether you want either:

  • Comprehensive

Take a look at the policy details for basic and comprehensive below.

Your excess is the amount you have to contribute towards a claim before the insurer starts paying out.

So if you lose a watch worth £200 and the excess is £100, you’re going to have to pay for half of any replacement.

How much excess you pay changes from claim to claim though, so you’ll need to see your policy handbook to work out the exact amount you’re going to have to shell out.

What’s the claims process for Staysure?

If you have an emergency medical situation and you need to get insurance help quick, call +44 1403 288 414, or +1 844 780 0639 from the US or Canada.

For most other claims, such as cancellations, here’s what you should do:

Check your Validation Certificate for your policy number. Gather receipts and other important documents such as police reports. Go to its website and submit a claim online. Or call 01403 288 410. Or send a letter with the documents in the envelope.

  • Tailored to over 50s.
  • Easy online claims process.
  • 24/7 medical helpline.
  • Claims service is not open 24/7.
  • Upper age limits apply for annual cover.
  • Not a wide selection of coverage levels.

About Staysure Travel Insurance company

staysure travel insurance

Staysure is a UK-based coverage organisation that mainly specialises in offering tour insurance for people over the age of fifty. The business enterprise was founded in 2004 with the aid of Ryan Howsam it has grown to become a massive advantage within the tour coverage market, especially catering to older individuals who may also face higher charges with different insurers.

Staysure offers more than a few insurance products, including tour coverage, home coverage, and medical health insurance. Their specialisation in journey coverage for older individuals sets them aside within the enterprise. They intend to provide comprehensive insurance for various travel-associated conditions, which include medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings.

Should you have travel insurance?

Travel coverage is an essential part of tour plans that too many tourists forget about and don’t often consider vital. However, it can be valuable if something surprising occurs on your vacation trips and while travelling. Travel insurance offers economic safety and assistance offerings if you want to cancel or interrupt your trip for covered reasons like contamination or damage. It additionally covers sudden medical emergencies overseas, such as physician visits, health centre remains, and prescriptions. This is essential if you have a coincidence or fall sick overseas where healthcare fees are expensive. Travel coverage will cover these steeply-priced payments so you don’t grow to be paying heaps out of pocket.

Additionally, travel insurance covers misplaced, broken, or stolen baggage and personal gadgets. Without this insurance, you would be responsible for replacing those highly-priced belongings. Insurance also can assist in case your flight is not on time, cancelled or you leave out a connection. It provides repayment for food, inns, and toiletries in addition to rebooking prices. Moreover, coverage includes 24/7 journey help to assist with rebooking flights or locating hospital treatment while overseas. With a lot of these benefits, travel insurance offers you peace of mind knowing you’ve got help and financial safety if the unexpected occurs in your journey. It’s a small charge to pay for potentially huge savings down the street. And Staysure Travel Insurance has paid keen attention to providing countless benefits to travellers of all types.

Runner-Up: AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance: Best Travel Insurance for Cruises

Travel Guard is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

Best Travel Insurance for Company Reputation: Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Approved claims are also paid out very rapidly, making it easier to carry through with a trip when luggage has been lost or alternative travel plans need to be made on the fly.

Best Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads: WorldTrips Travel Insurance

WorldTrips Travel Insurance has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

WorldTrips Travel Insurance Review

Best Low-Cost Travel Insurance Option: Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick International Travel Insurance  is another medically robust insurance provider that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Trawick Travel Insurance Review

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex American plan is meant for trips limited to the US, but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the US for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about the financial aspect of receiving medical care while traveling , even in the most remote corners of the globe.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away.

Choosing Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with preexisting conditions, so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose The Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award 5 stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2022 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the US Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Navalny buried in Moscow as thousands of supporters defy security

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s coffin was buried as by Frank Sinatra played over speakers.

Supporters arrived at a Moscow church for his funeral amid a heavy police presence and the threat of arrest. Not present were his widow, Yulia Navalnaya, or his two children, Dasha and Zahar. All three risk persecution from the Kremlin if they arrive in Russia, and currently live abroad. Russian police reportedly detained dozens of Navalny’s supporters who gathered for tributes across the country, according to rights monitoring group.

On Instagram, Navalnaya posted a heartfelt tribute to her husband. “I don’t know how to live without you, but I will try to do it so you — up there — would be happy and proud of me,” she wrote. “We will definitely meet one day.”

Navalny’s supporters shouted “you were not afraid, and we are not afraid ” ahead of the service at the Icon of the Mother of God church in the neighborhood of Maryino, chanting his name. As his body was later taken for burial, they said, “We will never forget you,” the BBC reported.

Russian police warned against protests over the death of the high-profile Kremlin critic. Independent media earlier noted disruptions to internet connections , with security cameras and fencing installed around the church.

The Kremlin refused to comment to journalists on Navalny’s funeral. “The Kremlin has nothing to say to Navalny’s relatives on the day of his funeral,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. But he warned that “any unauthorized gatherings will violate the law ” and protesters “will be held accountable,” independent outlet Mediazona reported.

Navalny, 47, died at an Arctic penal colony last month where he was jailed on politically-motivated charges. His family accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering his death, and many Western world leaders have held Putin responsible.

The Kremlin has sought to limit potential protests at Navalny’s funeral

Previously, funerals for the Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov in 1989 or the Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in 2015 saw thousands of Russians marching in Moscow . This time around, the Kremlin has seemed determined to prevent Navalny’s funeral from becoming a political flash point. Russian authorities installed fences and CCTV cameras near the church where Navalny’s funeral was held, while posters prohibiting video and audio recordings were hung inside the building, the Russian independent outlets Mediazona and RusNews reported. Meanwhile, Russian educational authorities have released a video aimed at schools emphasizing that attending illegal protests can come with prison sentences of up to 10 years , Agentstvo reported. One Moscow university has threatened to expel students who attend a rally on the day of Navalny’s funeral, wrote 7x7. Moscow city authorities have refused to approve a memorial march for Navalny on the basis of COVID-19 restrictions , the Russian journalist and opposition figure Yekaterina Duntsova wrote on Telegram. Russia has previously blocked other political rallies on the basis of the pandemic despite holding large pro-government rallies and events , Radio Free Europe reported.

Navalny’s funeral is a ‘stress test’ for Russian authorities

The Kremlin made detailed plans to prevent protests at Navalny’s funeral and to fill Russian media with pro-government stories to drown out the news about the Russian opposition leader’s death, The Moscow Times reported. “Navalny’s funeral is a stress test for the Russian authorities,” a senior Russian official told the independent news outlet. The official added that Russian special services were tasked with preventing “a picture similar to the farewell to [Andrei] Sakharov,” a reference to the dissident’s funeral, which was attended by hundreds of thousands of people in what was seen as a “ powerful indictment of the Soviet government ,” Time Magazine wrote.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

staysure golf travel insurance

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
