My acne journey: here’s how aviclear transformed my skin.
Treating acne can feel like youâre navigating a maze without a map. As someone whoâs battled stubborn acne since I was a teenager and tried countless remedies, from pimple patches to antibiotics over years, finding a solution and regimen to keep my skin clear was always a challenge.
This year I discovered AviClear by Cutera, the first and only FDA cleared laser device to treat mild, moderate and severe acne. AviClear was cleared by FDA and Health Canada just last year, the technology is still new but itâs been making waves for its promise to clear acne in three 30-minute sessions. I gave AviClear a try first so you donât have to, so keep reading to learn about my experience and results. âFarah Khan
Acne is commonly caused when pores get clogged by oil production or dead skin cells, according to American Academy of Dermatology Association. Whatâs unique about AviClear is that it is meant to target oil glands that lead to acne.
âAviClear uses the power of light to target acne at its source, the overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands,â Kaye Starlight, aesthetician and educator at Starlight MedSpa in the Greater Toronto Area. âThe laser’s 1726 nm wavelength selectively targets the sebaceous glands and suppresses sebum production,â Kaye Starlight, Aesthetician and Educator at Starlight MedSpa.â
AviClear has been clinically proven safe and effective for all skin types and tones. It is also suitable for both adolescents and adults.
My Experience/What To Expect
After exploring different options and researching AviClear, I decided to take the leap of faith. I entered Starlight MedSpa with hope and cautious optimism. I read reviews about horrible skin purges so of course I was nervous. My aesthetician was very kind, she explained the entire process every step of the way which calmed my nerves.
Before every AviClear session my aesthetician cleansed my skin and wiped it down with acetone (yes, acetone, it was not fun at all) to ensure no oils remain on the skin. Before starting the laser, my face was covered with wet gauze and throughout the entire session, with each pass of the laser, my aesthetician applied water to the area. This was to have a barrier to protect the skin from overheating. The water dripping down my face and neck was annoying but
Having done other treatments on my skin before such as laser hair removal and microneedling, this by far was the most painful and uncomfortable. I held a stress ball the entire time in every session. Strangely enough, the cold tip on the laser handpiece, intended to ensure comfort and shield the skin from overheating, felt oddly uncomfortable rather than soothing during the treatment.
âAviClear is equipped with exclusive AviCool sapphire contact cooling and sensory controls that maintain the skinâs temperature during treatment for a more comfortable experience,â says Kaye. The laser itself felt like a hot rubber band snapping against my skin followed by a cold sensation immediately afterwards.
Personally, the forehead and nose were the two most painful areas to treat so I saved those areas for last and built my tolerance in every session. Though it was painful, it was doable an itt transformed my skin in three months, the results are as promised.Â
Post-treatment, my skin showed mild redness, which was way less than I anticipated considering the pain I felt. In fact, my skin appeared plump and had a glow like I had just gotten a facial. I didnât notice a huge difference after my first AviClear laser session, but I saw an enormous difference after my second and third one. My skin hadnât been this clear and smooth in months.
âAfter treatment, breakouts can be shorter and less intense with results continuing to improve with time, indicating durability of results and long-term efficacy,â Kaye says. My acne started to noticeably diminish and by the end of the three months, I had fewer breakouts and a smoother complexion.Â
Is AviClear Worth It?
Itâs been two months since my final treatment session, my skin is the most clear it has been in several months. Iâm getting less breakouts, only a pimple or two around my cycle. According to an AviClear study, 92 per cent of patients treated with AviClear saw at least half of their acne cleared by 12 months after the final treatment session. Iâm optimistic my skin will continue to get better over the months given the great results now but weâll just have to wait and see.
Personal Tips for Those Who Want To Try AviClear
- My aesthetician recommended I take a Tylenol an hour before each session and I would highly recommend this. I found it to be a painful treatment especially in certain areas. The first time I didnât take a Tylenol and had a headache after the first session. My other two sessions, I took a Tylenol and had no issues post-treatment.
- The treatment is expensive. The price can depend on your area and clinic, but you can expect roughly $4000 for all three sessions. I would recommend speaking to your provider about the prices and payment options.

6 Bloggers Get Real About Their Acne And What Makes Them Feel Beautiful

Teen Vogue is celebrating its annual Acne Awards this week with a series of stories on all things acne. From knowing when to pop a pimple to understanding why some people get breakouts and others donât, weâve got you covered. Read all of the stories here .
As weâve seen with our series of stories for our 2019 Acne Awards , living with acne can be stressful and affects everyone differently, but the most important thing is being educated and feeling like you have a community you can relate to . So, we have to say we are so thankful for all of the bloggers out there who are getting real about acne from showing real photos to being open about treating and living with acne-prone skin for all of their followers to see.
Blogger Lea Alexandra of Skin With Lea , a self-described âskin mindset coachâ, tells Teen Vogue , âIf we all came together and worked on more representation of imperfect skin this stigma that acne has of being gross, ugly, and dirty would shift to something a lot more loving and positive.â Steps are slowly being taken to discuss acne in a more positive light, and it all starts with those who have a lot of influence.
Teen Vogue chatted with six beauty influencers who openly share their acne journey and have not allowed the unrealistic Instagram standards of âperfect skinâ to shun them away from being open and honest.

Aileen Olmedo of The Style Boro is a fashion guru who is âskin-care obsessed.â The New York City blogger dedicates her life to living â#StigmaFree,â which helps to keep some of the fake Instagram noise out.
Teen Vogue : How do you feel Instagram has made some people to feel embarrassed by their acne?
Aileen Olmedo: Sometimes, I feel that people aren't sharing their true selves when it comes to Instagram. Everyone, or at least influencers, are so concerned with their engagement and showing a curated lifestyle that they resort to apps like FaceTune to delete any trace of their skin texture, bumps, marks, and acne. I can completely see how their lack of pores can feed into one's insecurities. Coming across so many people on my feed with "perfect" skin makes me a little hesitant to share my face on my best and worst days.
TV: When do you feel most beautiful or confident? AO: I've accepted and am 100% okay with knowing that my skin will never be blemish or mark-free so surprisingly, I feel the most confident when my hair looks really good.
TV: What's a misconception people have about acne and people with acne?
AO: The biggest misconception people have, even a few estheticians I've come into contact with, is that acne means the person has a bad diet and isn't clean. Which isn't true at all. For instance, my acne is hormonal and flares up under moments of intense stress.
TV: What's your favorite acne product? Aileen: I'll share three favorites [at] three different price points: Blume's Meltdown , $26 - I saw this popping up all over my Instagram and Reddit feeds and decided to give a try. It'd either be a dud like every other acne product that promises to fight cystic acne or... not. I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the mixture of oils was at minimizing my cystic acne and reducing inflammation. Sometimes, I'll even put a layer over my entire face just because it leaves my skin so soft too. Naturopathica's Pumpkin Purifying Enzyme Peel , $58 - This extremely gentle but effective peel uses pumpkin enzymes to help decongest pores and exfoliate the skin. I love to use this while in the shower for the full spa effect. This one has been pretty helpful at sloughing off dead skin while I'm on a nightly retinol routine. SkinMedica's Lytera , $154 - After a breakout, or even if the tiniest zit appears, I get hyperpigmentation without fail. Those marks tend to stay on my face for months and months. This is a new-to-me product but after two weeks of use, I can already see a noticeable difference in my skin, which is great because it means less concealer. #GameChanger
Courtesy of @SkinWithLea
Lea Alexandra of Skin with Lea is a skin mindset coach who helps women with acne feel âconfident AF.â In sharing her personal journey, Lea aims to remind other women that they are worthy and that loving themselves with acne is possible. Bless her.
TV: When do you feel most beautiful or confident? Lea Alexandra: I feel most beautiful and confident when I'm just being me and I know that it's okay to be just that. I think there's this pressure [to] look a certain way to be beautiful when in reality, there's no rule book that says you have to look THIS way to be confident or to feel beautiful. I think it's a mindset, I think it's about how you speak to yourself and how you treat yourself. No one walks around with a stamp approving or disapproving of people even though society likes to makes us believe that. I feel most beautiful and confident when I'm just being authentically me, without the pressure of being or doing or looking a certain way. Knowing it's okay and actually pretty dope to just BE.
TV: What's your favorite acne product? LA: My mindset. I'm a huge believer in mind-body-connection and healing from the inside out so once I discovered that a lot of it was in my power, that was a massive game changer. I think there's so much talk about the next best product and how to âfixâ acne with xyz lotions or spot treatments and not enough talk about how your mind affects it and how all that self-hate and negative self-talk can manifest itself on the outside.
TV: Why did you decide to speak out about the realities of having acne? LA: I just came to a point in my life where I was in this downward spiral about my skin, constantly obsessed and worried and I decided to share it on Instagram with people who knew how it felt. What I do and why I started to talk about [it] was to shed light on the mental health aspect of having acne, how much of an impact it can have on your self esteem and confidence level. I feel like everyone just talks about the next product and the next acne cure instead of how it can affect your entire life and how you view yourself. What's beautiful about speaking up about acne is that once you do, the next person stands up, raises their hand and says âI deal with this too.â And then the next person and the next person. It creates this ripple effect and this is where it can really change everything. When one person speaks up about it, ten more will join in and so that was my mission. Starting a conversation, changing the stigma, talking about the mental health aspect of acne and that feeling confident and loving yourself with it IS possible.

Acne shows up a bit different on black women, which can make the experience vary. While Kaiser Coby thinks itâs âharder to find [black women who talk about acne] because they are sometimes overlooked,â she herself shares her own experience with acne on her platform and her 303,000 supporters canât get enough of it.
TV: What has your experience been with acne specifically as a black woman? Kaiser Coby: When my acne started to develop I was really scared to show my supporters because prior to getting acne I had relatively clear skin. It started to affect my job because my job involves being social, recording videos, taking pictures, etc. and I wasnât doing any of that because that involved showing my face and I was terrified. I soon realized I had to put my big girl pants on so I decided to take a barefaced picture and upload it on Instagram . I honestly expected to get a lot of mean comments because I felt that having clear skin was a big part of my brand. But I got the opposite! I had so many people DM me and comment on my picture about how happy they were that I was showing my acne and how it was refreshing to see a blogger embrace it. They also let me know that it made them feel like if I could own it so could they! I was so grateful for the response! My supporters also gave me the confidence to start my Acne Series that I have been doing on YouTube since last November. In the series I have been documenting my acne journey every 2/3 months and giving them updates on my skin and the products Iâve been using. Iâm so happy I started the series because Iâve got so much positive feedback from it on how it is helping others.
TV: What kind of financial toll has it taken on you to constantly buy and try new products to see what works for your skin? KC: Having acne definitely takes a toll on your bank account! When my acne started everyone was recommending me products that had worked for them, what they didnât tell me was how expensive the products were! I was shocked. A lot of the products didnât work. I would try other products in hopes that I would find one that finally worked. Having acne is an expensive âtrial and errorâ process.
TV: How do you feel Instagram has made some people feel embarrassed by their acne? KC: I feel like on Instagram most people just want to show the best part of themselves. So a lot of people tend to not show us their imperfections/flaws, which everyone has because if weâre being honest it doesnât really get as much reception or likes and even sometimes it could attract mean and troll accounts. A lot of people, especially the younger audience see their favorite bloggers online and it would look like their skin is spotless and poreless when in reality the use of lighting, filters, facetune and editing are the reason for most of us looking so âflawlessâ. This has definitely made a lot of people not want to accept or feel embarrassed about their acne, I know I was!
Courtesy of @EmeraldxBeauty
Kadeeja Sel Khan of Emerald x Beauty knows how to rock a beat face, but the UK influencer is also passionate about spreading skin positivity and she feels most confident when she takes her makeup off. While she openly shares her journey on Instagram for a positive purpose, she knows that the social media platform can equally be âthe most darkest, depressing, and sad place.â But, she doesnât let that stop her from sharing her progress.
TV: How do you wear makeup while still being kind and cognizant of your skin? Kadeeja Sel Khan: I always keep a barrier between my face and the makeup! So I love using an acne friendly/skin sensitive moisturizer! But above all Iâm a huge fan of serums.
TV: What are your three non-negotiables when it comes to wearing makeup with acne? KSK: Never sleep with makeup on, always keep a barrier between the skin and makeup, and know that makeup is something you should wear if YOU want to, not because you HAVE too. TV: How do you feel Instagram has made some people feel embarrassed by their acne? KSK: Instagram influencers, bloggers, and models are known to be these beautiful, perfect people. Showing off their perfect bodies, skin, makeup etc to thousands of followers. It also makes you feel [like youâre not] normal if you look a certain way. I feel it gives off the pressure to look good all the time and look a certain way. So when people try to be themselves they are constantly judged. I do feel that some brands contribute to this being a problem in the beauty community. Big brands like Mac Cosmetics, Kylie Cosmetics, and EstĂ©e Lauder should show more real women. It would help to give those people the confidence of being themselves and feeling good in their skin.
Courtesy of @EmilyKeel_
Meet Emily Keel , the personal trainer who âlearned that acne does not define her.â In addition to sharing her fitness journey, Emily sheds light on skin positivity, always letting her followers in on what works best for her.
TV: When do you feel most beautiful or confident? Emily Keel: I feel most confident and beautiful when I am completely myself, with no makeup on. Embracing your flaws is liberating and empowering.
TV: What's a misconception about people with acne? EK: So many people assume that people with acne donât look after themselves, but that is often so far from the truth. Acne sufferers have tried everything! A lot of people advise to drink more water or cut out dairy, but for most people that wonât cure acne.
TV: Why did you decide to speak out about the realities of having it? EK: I decided to speak out about the realities of having acne because I was fed up of feeling ashamed of it. I soon realized how many others were struggling with the same problems and it was so nice to connect with other people.
Courtesy of @RocioCeja_
Rocio Cervantes has dubbed herself a âprofessional olympic blenderâ because she knows how to do some elite eye makeup from pride month inspired eyes blended to perfection to bold and neon excessively pigmented hues. But, outside of sharing that, Rocio also shares her acne journey, and she says she is âhappy with [herself], acne and all.â
TV: When do you feel most beautiful or confident? Rocio Cervantes: I feel the most beautiful when I am feeling good on the inside because if my brain isnât mentally good than I donât feel too good. As someone who struggles with acne I try to be confident but I also allow myself to have those bad days because it is normal.
TV: How did you move past such a superficial idea of confidence? RC: I was able to move past a superficial idea of confidence when I realized that sometimes I am not confident and thatâs okay. We all have our days, itâs so normal to feel out of the loop and itâs not every day that you have to put on this confident fake face. I am human, I have feelings and Iâm allowed to feel how I want because I know Iâll get past it.
TV: When was the first time you saw acne represented in mainstream media? RC: To be honest I donât remember the first time I saw acne represented in mainstream media. I just know for myself that at the time I was so tired of photoshopping my acne out of my makeup photos that I stopped doing so. I think itâs important that mainstream media represents all skin types because not everyone has clear skin. I think thatâs why itâs so important that I showcase my acne on all my platform because I know people need someone to relate to and make them see that they are not alone.

How Acne Has Changed My Life
Jun 11, 2019
How Long I've Had Acne
Ever since high school, acne has been a huge aspect of my life. The first thing that I would do (and still do) when waking up in the morning is to look at the mirror and hope that no new pimples had formed. Ironically, my obsession for a healthy, acne-free face became very unhealthy. However, looking back at my acne journey so far, I have realized that the person I am today is very reflective of what I have learned from struggling with acne.
How Acne Changed My Life
Acne doesnât go away quickly. Especially the after-math: the scars and discoloration. Before acne, I would say that I was a very impatient person. Acne essentially forced me to be patient with myself because there was nothing more that I could really do to treat it besides acne medication and eating and living in a healthy manner.
I Learned To Be Patient
As a result, the patience that I had with my acne translated to patience that I would have in other aspects of my life (i.e. patience in relationships). What I have written may sound overly exaggerated, however, I can confidently claim that struggling with acne has caused me to grow to become more patient.
I Focused On Building Character Traits
Acne has allowed me to build and develop my personality and character. Like I said before, there wasnât much I could do to further improve the condition of my acne but to be patient and continue with my skincare regimen. At this point, I realized that my physical appearance is only a fraction of who I am as a human being.
Everyone, including myself, has a personality that is unique. Therefore, instead of focusing so much on my physical appearance, I began to concern myself with my traits and examine how they make me unique as a person. As a result, I have grown to become confident in myself.
Sometimes, I can say that acne was somewhat of a blessing to me because it was a humbling experience and has allowed me to find and develop confidence in who I am as a person.
I Became More Optimistic
Acne played a role in changing the way I think. I used to have a lot of negative thoughts about myself and my acne. Many of my friends tell me that I am a very positive and optimistic person. I can definitely claim that my journey with acne has played a significant role in contributing towards the optimistic mindset that I possess.
Why do I say this? I draw the connection between my optimism and my journey with acne because I have learned that the way I think can affect my acne to a certain extent.
For example, if I am bombarded with many negative thoughts concerning my acne and physical appearance, I tend to experience anxiety and stress; ultimately, triggering potential breakouts. Thus, I have learned to change my perspective about my acne in a way where my thoughts are more positive. I no longer consider it my âstruggleâ with acne, but rather, my âjourneyâ with acne.
Acne may just be a teenage memory in some peopleâs lives. For me, acne drastically changed the way I thought, behaved, and basically, lived life! This may sound quite strange, but sometimes I am thankful for my acne because it has caused me to become the person I am todayÂ

My Acne Journey
I’ve suffered with varying degrees of acne since about the age of 13. It started with a few spots on my chest and progressed to my face. It was probably just teenage acne and maybe it would have got better on it’s own. That said, I didn’t want to wait to find out, so a visit to the doctor was in order. For the next 7-8 years I was given every topical treatment you can imagine and every possible antibiotic available. My skin was clear for a while at age 16, in fact it was beautiful, blemish free and pigmentation free, but this was short lived.
Certain antibiotics when combined with strong sunlight can cause pigmentation to appear. They also upset the delicate balance of bacteria in the gut, causing Candida Albicans (where yeast over grows in the body), leaky gut (permeable gut wall) which can lead to autoimmune disease, manifesting itself in many different ways.
At age 20/21 I was not only battling acne but also feeling unwell and extremely exhausted. My self esteem was at an all time low. I was laying in the garden with no energy to move one day, when a friend of my mother’s came round. She’d had Candida and suggested this might be what was wrong with me. At last I had a starting point, since the doctors didn’t have a clue why I felt so ill. (These days doctors understand so much more, and I don’t think I would have been prescribed antibiotics for pretty much 5 years without a break.) Anyway, homeopath confirmed I had Candida and I was put on a yeast free, sugar free and mould free diet (no mushrooms, beer etc.). I started to feel better almost immediately. However, I struggled with the diet because I didn’t have any idea in those days. I thought a big bowl of pasta, tuna, sweetcorn and mayo was a healthy meal!
During this period I moved to Belgium to be with my new boyfriend of the time. My skin became unbearable as I struggled to stick to the diet, half not believing that it would really help (if only I’d known then what I know now!). As a previous acne sufferer my boyfriend knew of a drug called Roaccutane. Supposedly you take it once and you are cured forever. Very quickly my skin improved and after 6 months I had great skin again – I  felt like a new person and moved back to England to enrol on a make-up course in Nottinghamshire. By the end of the first year my skin started to flare up again. Feeling unwell and exhausted I was forced to go home to Kent to recuperate for a week. Some homeopathic tinctures helped to calm me down and I slept for 12 hours a night for a week!
For the next 8 years I carried on, half doing the diet and half not, trying all sorts of alternative treatments that I thought might help me. I also (stupidly) took a second course of Roaccutane, it cleared my skin but the repercussions had an enormous impact on my well being, but that’s another story!
Eventually I came across ‘Vibrational Medicine’. It’s strange how it works, but it basically gets your cells to vibrate at the correct frequency in order for the body to heal itself. This absolutely changed my life! It didn’t clear my skin as much as I’d have liked but I had my constitution back. I had treatments over a period of 3 years until instinctively I felt I had to move on. My skin was still an issue. If the level is low, doctor might recommend further test for ruling out hormonal conditions, which can be a frequent difficulty when guys generic viagra no prescription achieve the age of 30-70. buy cialis pharmacy Men are stereotyped as testosterone loaded workhorses; with each and every one of them sporting a stunning libido, performance, and sex life. In many cases a medicine with same sildenafil viagra tablets formula or ingredients and same functionality are sold by a foreign pharmacy by a different name and cheaper price. One particular type of dysfunction among sildenafil professional family members is interdependency.
Food and Healing the Gut
It’s only now, 10-11 years later, I feel I am finally on the right path. It really does come down to food and achieving and maintaining a healthy gut. Who knew the gut is 80% of our immune system? It makes sense that if you heal the gut you have every chance of living a happy and healthy life. I kind of fell into this because I had been eating junk over Christmas 2012 and put on 7lbs. For me that’s quite a lot as my healthy weight is around 9 stone. At 9st 7lbs my clothes felt tight and I didn’t feel good. My friend suggested I try the ‘no sugar no grains’ diet. I read up about it and decided it would also be good for my skin and I’d also lose the extra weight. Very soon I was back down to 9st 3lbs. I wasn’t 100% strict in the early days, allowing myself 2 days per week when I could eat biscuits or crisps. The biggest thing though was just not knowing what to eat! Paleo recipes became my focus because they looked tasty and interesting.  This lead me to a guy called Chris Kresser , the gut expert…plus The Paleo Mom who is also very hot on the latest research in gut health.
Topical Treatments
I believe healthy skin starts on the inside but you change the texture of it by using the right skincare and having a feel peels. About 10 years ago I had a few TCA peels. I had the salon version so the peel was left on for literally seconds and the skin peeled off over a period of a week. This got rid of a big patch of pigmentation in the middle of my forehead. It’s recommended to have 1 peel per week for 4 weeks.
Currently I am under supervision of Rebecca Green of The Green Room in Bournmouth. She advised me to cut out dairy completely for 6 weeks as this is the amount of time it takes to clear the body. My skin improved almost immediately. I’d still been getting lumps and spots around my chin and jaw area. By eliminating dairy cleared this up. Over a 2 month period I had a few peels to improve skin texture and help with pigmentation. I am now using the Obagi Skin care system which is excellent for pigmentation, skin texture and ageing.
What now…?
Food is no longer a second thought for me, it is central to my life, my health and my well being, not to mention the health of my skin! Even when I’m super busy, working from 7am – 7pm I make sure I’m organised. I’ll prepare, pre-cook and freeze food beforehand to make sure I have the right food to hand. I keep it simple, just veg and meats, eggs, soups and homemade muffins or cakes made with almond & coconut flour for treats. I’m evolving all the time and still working towards the day when my skin will be the best it can be, it’s a work in progress!

My acne journey - 3 things I learned along the way
Updated: Mar 11, 2022
Acne is a condition that is very near and dear to my heart. Iâve definitely been there and still do struggle with acne. Acne can impact our quality of life directly because it is our outward expression to the world. It is completely normal to feel insecure and have lower confidence when our skin is not âclear.â In this blog post, I want to share with you my personal journey and some things Iâve learned along the way.
First, I want to say is that it is very normal to have blemishes, marks, scars, blackheads and other so-called "imperfections" on our faces. It hasnât been normalized for a very long time because of what we see on social media (especially now with filters). It is very common to see airbrushed and glowing skin on our phones that is not reflective of what people look like in real life. So this your kind reminder to remember that!
Now to my story...
I was fortunate enough that I didnât experience acne during my teenage years. Instead, I was faced with adult-onset acne. I donât there is ever a good time to have it, it affects you just the same! There were a couple of changes in my life that happened at the time I started developing acne so itâs hard to say what exactly contributed to it. But around the age of 22 I started to experience acne. There were some years where I remember it being deep, painful and and cystic, and other times where it would be common to have a few pimples before my menstrual cycle.
After I started seeing my Naturopathic Doctor and ran some blood work, I didnât fit the criteria for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which can be a common cause of deep cystic acne, especially around the jawline. This is something that is important to rule out. However, I did have other markers that came back low that needed to be optimized, including Vitamin D. Testing Vitamin D levels is actually really important when it comes assessing acne. Research shows that getting to adequate levels of Vitamin D can decrease the number of inflammatory lesions. Additionally, the more severe the deficiency, the worse the acne.
In addition to lab testing, here are 3 things I learned along the way that I want to share with you:
1. Increased restriction does not lead to increased results.
At one point, I found that I was trying to restrict multiple things from my diet, thinking that multiple things must have contributed to my acne. Apart from dairy (which does have very good evidence in causing acne), I didnât see results there. A lot of times I felt overwhelmed when going out to eat because I truly craved things like gluten and dairy and chocolate and I felt guilty whenever I had them. Less restriction over time actually led to more freedom and better skin, which I found very interesting. There is evidence to support that while acne can cause depression and anxiety, the converse is true, where stress and anxiety can also lead to acne. This highlights an important bidirectional relationship between the skin and our nervous system and emphasizes the importance of a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to caring for patients with acne.
2. Buying a new skincare product every 3 weeks is not the answer.
My skin started to feel its best again when I actually used targeted skincare products recommended to me by a skincare therapist. Prior to this, I canât even tell you how many products I tried, hoping it would be the answer. As important as it can be to find products that work for you skin, please remember that you will always get the best results when you work on your health both internally and externally. Looking for a product to save the day will only leave you with an empty wallet.
3. Talk to a health care provider who knows the research and is qualified to help you.
I will be completely honest and say that this is something I wish I had done sooner. Because I was in naturopathic school while I was experiencing acne, I really thought I could figure it out on my own. The truth is we all need someone to take care of us. It wasnât until I started working with my Naturopathic Doctor (ND) that I really started to see results. I found that I was definitely WAY more compliant when I had follow-up visits scheduled with my ND, and I had a plan that I could follow. When I was doing things on my own, I wasnât as compliant and I would get frustrated when I wouldnât see results in a couple of weeks. It was a good reminder that acne is a long-term, chronic condition that can definitely be managed, and it is something that therefore takes time.
My last thoughts that I want to leave you with: If you have sought out any conventional therapies like Accutane or other medication for your acne, please donât feel any shame in that. Like I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post, our faces are our outward expression to the world and it is completely normal to want to do everything you can to help it. I also worry about the increasing depression and anxiety rates that comes with acne, therefore if a treatment like that will help with your depression and anxiety, then the benefit outweighs the risks. I encourage you to work with your health care provider to get appropriate lab testing, a targeted supplement and skincare regime (if indicated), and nutrition advice that does not just focus on restriction.
It is my absolute passion and mission to educate and empower women on their health journey to find the results that they are looking for and to be able to achieve what they desire. The Ordinary Acne Review: 7 Best Products for Acne Prone Skin Types
L isten, Iâve lived a good life. Iâm blessed with a nice family, good friends, and good health⊠but life kicked me in the gut in one regard: acne. So my hunt for the best Ordinary products for acne has been a long one.
Iâve had back acne (aka bacne) and acne for a large part of my life from age 12 until about 23. Iâm not talking about a few bumps here and there.
My Acne Journey
Full-on cystic acne covering my shoulders, upper back and face. As a teenager in the 2000âs (before skin care experts were flooding TikTok or Instagram), I relied heavily on drugstore products. I couldnât even pronounce âdermatologist.â
When I was 23, I realized I couldnât do it alone and sought out help from a doctor. I was immediately prescribed Isotretinoin, or as you might know it, Accutane. It took three months and several pills, but I finally have clear skin⊠well as clear as it could get.
Thereâs still acne scarring, dark spots, and the occasional acne/chest acne (aka chestne). Itâs not completely gone which is why Iâm experimenting with The Ordinary products for acne and scarring (after using the brand for years).
So, What Are The Best Ordinary Products for Acne?
Iâm curious how well these products will help fade acne scars on my back (because I have a lot), and how it helps my smaller breakouts. Come along as I take a deep dive into their acne-focused line and find out which The Ordinary products are worth your dime . (Hey, that rhymed!)

The Ordinary Acne Review: Best Ordinary Products for Acne Prone Skin Types
Acne prone skin types are often very delicate and damaged. I know this from experience, but I have to say The Ordinary has a lot of great stuff thatâs gentle and effective for acne prone skin .
1. The Ordinary Basics You Should Have
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution is a great addition to your skincare routine if you suffer from acne. It helps to remove dead skin cells and clear up clogged pores.
Youâve probably seen items at Walgreens or Target with salicylic acid in their formulas. Itâs a common ingredient to help active acne, but you have to be careful with the acid percentage and other ingredients added.
Stay away from anything scented. Scented is never your friend.
I wonât say other brands donât offer great alternatives, but The Ordinary salicylic acid solution is only $5.90 . It also feels great on the skin, and doesnât dry me out like some others Iâve tried.
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution has a squalane base for application which is great for hydrating the skin, but has no water properties like the original solution.
If youâre looking for even more hydration, I love using The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser before any serums or creams. This cleanser is one of the best The Ordinary products for oily acne prone skin because it cleans gently while leaving your skin feeling even; not too dry and not too greasy.
For similar results to the salicylic acid, try The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque . This salicylic acid masque is meant to be used once or twice a week on dry skin and just like the serum, it helps remove dead skin cells.
Itâs also great for blackheads. The mask contains charcoal and clays to help really clean up your skin and pores. Since itâs not a direct acid, you donât have to worry about it causing damage to your skin when used incorrectly.
Something to note: serums and acids like this are really great for acne that requires average to easy management. It will not cure you of cysts and large areas of acne. While it could help manage severely congested skin, you probably wonât see a huge change.
2. Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
As part of The Ordinary acne set, this serum is helpful for pimples and oily, acne prone skin.
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps with reducing inflammation and pores which helps to reduce acne and pimples at the very start! Zinc is another anti-inflammatory that helps with signs of aging by protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. Together, they make a powerful team and I really like this product.
After using it on my face and body for the last week, Iâve noticed my acne minimizing overnight as well as reduced redness around larger pimples. Itâs a good addition for those with clustering acne as it helps relieve painful inflammation.
Testing these products came at a great time too because I had just started my glorious, abundant, not-at-all-painful period! So consider this post upgraded from a regular acne review to The Ordinary Hormonal Acne review.
Alongside The Ordinary, Iâm testing THINX period panties, so keep an eye out for that review too
3. The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
With some more of the same anti-inflammatory properties as the serum above, Azelaic Acid is great for acne prone skin and those with uneven skin tone. It helps to reduce redness that comes with inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and itâs antimicrobial to keep your skin protected against germs .
The Oridinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% comes in a nice creamy formula that I like to put on after all my serums. The acid is highly concentrated to give the best results , but I wouldnât use it alone.
All of these acne products are pretty effective when used together, but separately you might see slow progress.
If you have heavier acne and want immediate results, this brand is probably not what youâre looking for.
The Ordinary Acne Routine â Step By Step
To make it easy, The Ordinary put together an acne kit called â The Balance Set, â and it includes all the goodies you need to start your acne recovery journey!
I like The Ordinaryâs website because it tells you exactly how to their products, but it usually follows the pattern of:
- Cleanse your face
- Apply serums
- Apply creams
- Finish with a moisturizer
The routine recommends: the Squalane Cleanser, Salicylic Acid 2% masque, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum, and the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA lotion . All of these are great to kick off your skin care routine, and build up with extra serums later.
Iâve mentioned pretty much every product above, except for one. The moisturizer. One of the most vital steps of any acne routine is moisture. The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA is a really great skin hydrator and a nice finishing touch to your The Ordinary skincare routine . Itâs one of the best The Ordinary products for oily skin that keeps you nice and hydrated (without feeling greasy).
The lotion uses Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) to seal in moisture and protect the skin. Some of those factors or ingredients include hyaluronic acid, amino acids, fatty acids, and more. These compounds are found naturally in the skin so it shouldnât cause any harsh reactions, but itâs always a good call to patch test.
Iâve been using this lotion for a while, and I really like how lightweight it is on my skin. Itâs a great step to add to both your morning and night routines.
I have combination skin so I donât need too much help keeping my skin plump, but if youâre someone who suffers from dry skin, I recommend trying The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum .
The serum is perfect for keeping in extra moisture. Be sure to apply it before any lotion or heavier creams. Hyaluronic acid has many other benefits like helping with soft tissue growth, and preventing tightness of the skin. The vitamin B5 used in the serum is another hydrator. Itâs a hydrator party!
If youâre not a fan of Hyaluronic acid, then thereâs yet another serum with similar benefits. The Ordinary has such an abundance of products, I love it!
Hydrate with the 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
Just like the squalane cleanser, The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived serum uses a naturally occurring substance called squalane (aka itâs found naturally in your skin).
The Ordinary was able to extract it directly from plants. While they donât specify which, it can be pulled from plants such as wheat germ, amaranth seed, and sugar cane.
Itâs another great skin hydrator (I think I reached my quota on the word âhydratorâ) and even more direct of an application than the cleanser . I would pick either the hyaluronic acid or this serum, but you donât need both.
Bonus: This serum can also be used in your hair! The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil can also be used in the same manner. Both help moisturize and strengthen!
Youâre Acneâs Gone, But It Left A Mark On The Way Out?
What are the best ordinary products for acne scars.
Scarring is the my biggest concern after taking Accutane. Cystic acne doesnât disappear without leaving a mark and I want to win this battle once and for all. To help, I tried some of The Ordinaryâs products that target scarring.
Starting off with an exfoliator thatâs been taking TikTok by storm: The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution . This product helps with skin texture and scarring, so itâs a great help to those healing from acne.
The acid toning solution is a chemical exfoliator. I always caution people to use it because it can be a lot for sensitive skin types. That said, Iâve been applying it nightly and itâs been doing great. It can also be used on the body.
It will sting a little around areas that are highly sensitive like the nostrils and the lips, so I suggest avoiding these areas at first and building up slow exposure.
For body acne, this product is great. The skin on my back and chest is much tougher than my face, so this product does its job with no after-effects. After using for some time, Iâve seen it fade acne scars and help with my overall skin tone.
Iâve been waking up with glass skin and really even texture! In my opinion, itâs one of the best acne scar products on the market. This formula contains Tasmanian Pepperberry to help with inflammation and help protect sensitive skin.
It also has aloe vera to combat the harsh effects that comes with any chemical exfoliators you might use. To reiterate, I really think it is one of the best ordinary skincare products and itâs worth every penny.
BUT, if youâre ready for something more intense, it might be time to invest in the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution . This formula uses beta hydroxy acids to penetrate further into the skin and clear pore congestion. The solution also uses Alpha Hydroxy acids to exfoliate the skin.
The Ordinary peeling solution can be dangerous. The first time I used it, I chemically burned the skin around my mouth! I went into more detail in my other review: The Ordinary Skincare Guide: Honest Review After 3 Years Of Use + Best Products.
The solution (when used correctly) helps with skin texture and fine lines. The key is to use it consistently â about once every week or every other week â and it could slightly help with indented acne scars (but those are usually a beast to get rid of, so donât expect life-changing results).
For a lighter peeling solution, you can try The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA . Itâs a much safer choice, but you might not get the same WOW results.
Letâs Brighten That Skin With Ordinary Beauty Ascorbic Acid!
With my acne under control (and pretty much a thing of the past
), Iâve been able to focus on other aspects of my skin that I want to improve. One of those improvements being my skin tone and overall brightness .
So I gave The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% a shot. The serum contains an Ascorbic Acid (a vitamin C derivative) in a non-water solution. For those that donât know, Vitamin C is way more effective in a silicone base or waterless solution.
The benefits of vitamin C are remarkable. It helps with brightening skin, and it fights against signs of aging by helping your skin produce collagen . Collagen has the potential to make your skin firmer and more youthful.
Alpha Arbutin pinpoints skin tone by the evening overall and targeting darker spots. It also helps with the appearance of scars, but not by a lot. If you already use a vitamin C product, but still want the skin toning benefits of alpha arbutin, pick up The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA . It uses a standard 1% of hyaluronic acid to give you an extra hydration boost, but its main star is alpha arbutin.
Looking for more products to target aging? Try The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane !
When Itâs Time To Consult A Skincare Professional
For severe acne, the first step is to see a professional (if possible). Iâve been through the cycle myself, and it just led me down rabbit holes of trying different products that never work.
Even The Ordinary recommends talking to a professional if you have relentless acne, and I share the same sentiments. Over-the-counter ointments can only do so much.
If you have mild acne, start with the serums mentioned in this article, or explore the aisles of your favorite beauty store (like Ulta or Sephora) with one of the staff.
Get some goodies and try out a few at a time. Use them together and separately to see which ones are actually doing what you need them to do. Keep in mind most of these products are meant to be used over an extended period of time (3-6 months) before you start to see final results .
If you are recovering from acne, like me, check out The Ordinaryâs website . I really like the results Iâm seeing from using their products, and itâs the perfect fix for my smaller breakouts. You canât go wrong starting with the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution , itâs my favorite.
And I know itâs really really hard, but remember your beauty is not measured by your skin. Donât let it hold that power over you because I did and now Iâm playing a lot of catch-up to find my confidence.
Weâve all had acne, some worse than others, and we all have our own relationship with it. Whatâs yours? Comment below with your acne journey and any tips you have!

I started getting Botox in my mid-20s, and now that I'm 39, I'm so glad I did
- I won a gift card for free Botox when I was 25 and I almost didn't use it.
- But I made the appointment and I loved the subtle results.
- I've continued getting Botox for over a decade and I'm so glad I started in the first place.
"She doesn't even have wrinkles !" someone shouted.
I sheepishly accepted the gift card and proceeded to hide in the corner. I was in a crowded room at an event at a local spa, sipping my bubbly while excited middle-aged women screamed with delight over free chemical peels and micro-needling. (No judgment, I am that middle-aged woman today!)
I was 25, and I was holding a gift card for 50 units of Botox . I felt ridiculous.
"I don't need this," I thought.
I thought it was too early for me to get Botox
I figured I'd eventually get Botox one day, but in my mid-20s?! That seemed preemptive, even for me â a skin-obsessed, admittedly vain person who followed a precise product-laden skincare regimen . Likely the result of spending my teens fighting relentless acne that I spent hours attempting to cover while my fresh-faced friends looked like the ads for Clearasil and Noxzema.
After the event, I tried to return the gift card. (Can you imagine? I'd listen to the Dora the Explorer theme song on repeat while river dancing in wooden clogs for free Botox today!)
Anyway, the owner of the spa wouldn't let me return the gift card. She convinced me to proceed with the Botox treatment and see if I noticed any changes afterward. I reluctantly agreed and made an appointment for the following week.
At my appointment, I was told to hold a mirror in front of my face while the injector and I discussed what results I hoped for. I felt stupid for going through with the appointment, but I decided to write about my maiden Botox journey for a popular wedding blog, so I was trying to take it seriously. I pointed to some faint lines across my forehead and between my brows (the so-called "11s"). The process was quick, virtually painless, and aside from the tiny pinpricks of blood where the injections were made, I was ready to hit the town afterward â or, in my case, go home, change into pajamas, and work on my laptop.
The results were subtle, and I looked more rested
A few nights later, I couldn't sleep , so I went to my office and did some lackluster work on a few writing assignments I'd been putting off. Halfway through some drivel about something I knew no one would read, I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror hung on the wall near my desk. Huh, I thought. It was 2 a.m., I wasn't wearing a stitch of makeup, and the lighting in my office was terrible, but somehow, I looked refreshed, rested, and, dare I say, good. "The Botox!" I thought, surprised.
I later learned that preventive Botox is a thing (also sometimes called " baby Botox ," because less of it is often administered at a time when people get it for this reason). Basically, it means getting the treatment to slow the development of wrinkles over time, rather than using it to combat developed wrinkles. This is essentially what I started doing, but I didn't fully realize it then. I would simply notice I wasn't looking as rested, or that my makeup was starting to crease in a few lines on my forehead, and I go in for a little touch-up.
I'm also a fan of the preventive approach because the results are subtle. Rather than going from wrinkles to wrinkle-less overnight, I've been slowly treating them as I age. I'm not embarrassed about getting it, and I'll be the first to recommend it to almost anyone. Still, I like that after a treatment, I don't look like a completely different person.
My Botox appointments have gotten more expensive â and frequent
While my results have been great, I have to be honest with you. It's not at all cheap. In my 20s, Botox was more affordable because I only needed it about every six months, and I treated only a few areas on my forehead . I'd spend around $300 per visit. Now, well into my 30s, the time between visits has changed. Now I only last three months â maybe four, if I can stand it â and the number of injection sites has expanded to include the area around my eyes. I'm up to about $600 a visit now.
While the increasing cost of my little Bo' habit doesn't thrill me, I justify it like this. I don't spend money on other products or procedures to fight wrinkles: no eye creams, lasers, retinol, nothing. I use Aveeno moisturizer (I love you, Jennifer Aniston!), and that's it. I'd like to think I'm saving money, but I'm probably lucky if I'm breaking even.
So, yes, I've spent a small fortune holding on to a bit of my youth, but it's been well worth the investment for me. I still get carded sometimes, and I'm not going to lie, when people are genuinely shocked to learn that I'm 39 years old, it makes me feel good.
