South Africa Visa for Chinese citizens

The South African Government has introduced an online eVisa application system that makes the process of getting a visa simple for travellers from eligible countries, which include China.

Chinese nationals are now eligible to get the South Africa e-Visa in a few simple steps. To get the South African electronic visa, Chinese applicants need a valid passport, a debit or credit card and an email address.

There are different types of visas that the South African Government offers depending on the specific reasons for which an individual or group intends to visit the country. Travellers are, therefore, advised to go over the different types of visas that the South African government offers in order to determine which one is right for their travel needs.

Do Chinese citizens need a visa for South Africa?

Chinese citizens need a visa to enter South Africa. If they are planning to stay in the country for a short stay, they may apply for the South African electronic visa.

The new online eVisa application process introduced by the South African government facilitates the process of obtaining a visa for short-term stays.

The eVisa system eliminates the need for travellers to visit local consulates to obtain a visa. It has primarily been introduced to make it easier for people to travel to South Africa for tourism or business.

South Africa online visa requirements for Chinese citizens

To apply for an eVisa to South Africa , Chinese travellers are required to have a passport valid for at least 30 days from the date of their departure from South Africa.

Besides having a valid Chinese passport, applicants are also required to complete the South Africa e-Visa application form.

All eligible travellers who wish to start the online application process must have a current email address, and a debit or credit card to cover the South Africa e-Visa fee.

Once the requirements have been met , Chinese tourists can then begin the process of applying for an eVisa. The form is straightforward and easy to fill out.

Current South Africa visa requirements for Chinese nationals

The specific requirements for a visa depend on the applicant’s circumstances and travel plans.

It is recommended that Chinese citizens refer to the nearest South African embassy or consulate to receive personalised information. However, if Chinese travellers only wish to visit South Africa for a short stay, they can apply online for their e-Visa , which is faster and hassle-free.

Chinese nationals who are interested in getting a long-term visa or migrant visa are likely to need the following:

In general, visa applicants are asked to submit the following:

    • Their valid passport with 2 blank pages
    • A completed Form BI-84 (application for a visa)
    • The application fee
    • A yellow-fever vaccination certificate (if applicable)
    • A statement and/or supporting documents discussing the reason and duration of the visit
    • 2 recent passport-style photos
    • A return or onward ticket
    • Proof of guardianship or consent from the guardian in the case of an unaccompanied minor (if applicable)
    • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the traveller’s needs while in South Africa

The eVisa is expected to significantly reduce the amount of paperwork required to apply for a South African visa from China.

How to get a South African eVisa for Chinese citizens

Getting a South African eVisa from China is a fairly simple process. The applicant needs access to the Internet. To fill out the application, they may use a smartphone, tablet or computer.

When completing the application form, Chinese applicants must provide:

    • Date and place of birth
    • Country of citizenship
    • Telephone number

It is essential that the traveller provides their passport details, which include the document number, issuing and expiry date, and country of issue. Furthermore, the information entered in the form must match the details of the passport.

Before submitting the South Africa eVisa form, Chinese applicants should revise and double check that their information is accurate. Errors or mistakes in the application might lead to delays or visa rejection.

The visitor will also be asked to provide a valid email address and credit/debit card information . There is a processing fee for the eVisa application and the traveller’s credit/debit card will be charged for the amount.

Once the online visa application is submitted, the applicant will get an update on the status of their application within a few business days . It may take longer depending on whether there is additional processing required on the application.

Once the eVisa application is approved, the eVisa is sent to the traveller’s email address . The visitor will then need to keep a copy of the eVisa on their smartphone or handheld device and take a copy with them to the airport. The passport and the eVisa have to be presented upon arrival at the airport in order to gain entry into South Africa.

    Visit South Africa from China

Once the traveller is allowed entry into South Africa, they can stay up to 30 days in the country on the eVisa. Chinese citizens should plan their departure before the eVisa ends in order to avoid issues with overstaying the visa .

Permitted stays on other South African visas for Chinese nationals depend on the specific visa.

    CHINA OPENS UP

The country has historically been closed to most travellers, requiring most nationalities to obtain entry visas to pass through its borders.

It has now decided to open its borders to nationals of a handful of countries in a groundbreaking move. According to its foreign ministry, China will trial visa-free entry for 6 countries

This is set to help “promote China’s high-quality development and opening up”, spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Friday, per BBC.

    ELIGIBLE COUNTRIES

China will trial visa-free entry for passport holders of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia.

According to China’s foreign ministry, the arrangement will be for a year.

Currently, most nationalities need a visa to enter China. Only a few nationalities are able to enter the country without needing entry visas. Examples of those exempt include citizens of Singapore and Brunei.

These travellers may enter China for business, tourism, family visits and transit for no more than 15 days.

From 1 December this year to 30 November 2024, ordinary passport holders from the six selected countries may also enter China without the need for an entry visa.

These travellers may stay in the country for up to 15 days only.  Entry will be permitted for business or tourism purposes.

    GRADUAL OPENING-UP

China’s easing of entry requirements is in line with developments in a number of other countries. In post-Covid times many countries have eased entry for travellers.

This is in an attempt to entice tourists back after the tourism slump created by measures imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19 during the pandemic.

    Apply for a visa

If you want to visit South Africa, you must produce a valid visa before you can enter into the country. A visa will be issued for a visit for tourism or business purposes and is valid for a period of 90 days.

Some countries are exempted from visa control, which means that citizens from those countries do not need a visa to visit South Africa.

Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, and airline officials must insist on visas before allowing passengers to board. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to put you onto a flight back to your home country. Depending on your intended visit, you can apply for a Visitor’s Visa or a Transit Visa. Find out more about the:

China Visa Application – How to Authenticate Documents in South Africa

Authenticate Documents in South Africa for China visa

Applying for a visa to teach in China is not straightforward. Before you even begin the process, you need to gather a few documents and have them  authenticated by the South African government  and then  legalized for use in China . This is a two-step process.

This guide will help anyone holding documents issued in South Africa. If you are from South Africa but teaching abroad, fear not.  This guide also helps those who are not in South Africa currently but need their documents processed there.

Why? Because documents can only ever be authenticated by the government where the documents were originally issued .

If you are a South African citizen/resident but have documents issued in another country, you will have to have them authenticated in that country instead.

    What does document authentication mean?

Document authentication means the South African government declares them to be legitimate and that’s an important step when wanting to use  any  document abroad. Essentially, this is what tells foreign countries that your documents are legitimate. This is Step 1.

After that, you’ll need to present the documents to a Chinese government representative in South Africa, who will look over the documents and accept them for use in your China Visa application. This is Step 2.

How to get your Criminal Background Check in South Africa

Applying for a criminal background check in South Africa is not all that complicated BUT it can be time-consuming. Get this process started asap!

Contact your nearest police station or the Pretoria office if you don’t intend mailing in the form. Currently, due to the COVID-19 situation, you may be prohibited from personally visiting any government office, so ask beforehand.
    • Ensure you specify how you’d like the document delivered to you. You can either have it mailed back to your or, if possible, you can pick it up at your nearest police station.
    • Usually, it will take 2 weeks to receive your Criminal Background Check

Once you have your document, simply add it to all your other documents and continue with the authentication and legalization process, as detailed below.

Getting documents in South Africa for Chinese visa

Authenticating and legalizing documents in South Africa - step by step guide

Step 1 – get your documents notarized.

First up, you will need to get the copies of the following documents notarized:

    • TEFL certificate
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Criminal Record Check

Please note that you will be getting a COPY of your documents notarized, authenticated and legalized. You’ll need to get the documents  notarized  by a Notary Public or Registrar at a High Provincial Court. Usually, this costs about USD 50. This is the only time you will need to bring your ORIGINAL documents along.

Once you have the copies notarized, you will be using these notarized copies in the following steps.

Step 2 – Authenticate your documents with South African Authorities

The notarized signature and stamp will then have to be verified by the Dept. of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa ( DIRCO)  for  authentication.  DIRCO charges R150/200 to authenticate a document.

See the DIRCO Legalization Services page , where you’ll find details on how to submit your documents, either in person, by mail, by courier or even through a friend or family member, which is a great option if you are abroad.

Regarding the above DIRCO link: it is imperative that you closely read the section related to each type of document, as the authentication process is different for every type of document.

    For example:

    • Bachelor Degrees gained in a South African university: the notarized document must first be authenticated by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) BEFORE being processed by DIRCO
    • For your TEFL certificate: if the issuing authority was South African and registered with SAQA, you can go ahead and have it authenticated by them too, before forwarding to DIRCO for further authentication. However, if the certification authority is headquartered abroad, you will first need to have it legalised by the South African High Court and only then can you present it to DIRCO for authentication
    • Your Criminal Background Check: this can be authenticated directly by DIRCO

Step 3 – Legalize your documents with the Chinese Embassy in South Africa

Send your documents to the nearest Chinese Embassy/Consulate , and they will  legalize  all the authenticated documents.

In South Africa, there is a Chinese Embassy in Pretoria and consul general offices in:

    • Johannesburg

Every embassy has its own form to fill in and you’ll be asked to detail the ‘purpose’ of your document legalization. Make sure to tell them that you need the documents for your China visa application form as they’ll know how to word/sign/stamp it accordingly. Look for the Consular Legalization Page on the relevant websites – here’s the Pretoria Embassy Legalisation Page

If you’re abroad at the time you need documents authenticated, and don’t have anyone back home who could do this for you, you can also have your docs authenticated through your nearest South African Embassy/Consulate .

First though, you’ll need to send an email request to  [email protected]

Schengen visa price hike: Here’s how much more you might have to pay to visit the EU in 2024

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to increase the basic fee for a Schengen visa in 2024.

If it gets the green light, the cost will rise by 12 per cent from €80 to €90 for adults and from €40 to €45 for children.

The EU is also planning to raise the fee even more for countries showing “insufficient cooperation on readmission,” which refers to accepting the re-entry of individuals expelled from member states.

Schengen visas are required for citizens from non-EU countries that do not benefit from the EU and Schengen area's 90-day visa-free rule.

These include nationals of South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China.

If the proposal becomes policy, the price increase could come in the next few months.

How much will the Schengen visa cost in 2024?

The European Commission presented a draft of the Schengen visa fee increase on 2 February after a meeting in December during which experts from member states supported the revision with an “overwhelming majority.”

The initiative will be open for feedback until 1 March. During this time, EU citizens can express their opinions on the matter and communicate if they support the proposal or not.

After this, the EU can implement the changes which then come into force 20 days after their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The Commission has emphasised that the proposed price hike has been caused by the rising inflation rate in the EU. The body undertakes a revision of the Schengen visa fee every three years.

    • Flying into Croatia just got easier: Air border controls dropped for Schengen zone countries

If it goes ahead, it will see visa costs rise from €80 to €90 for adults and from €40 to €45 for children.

For countries which have not demonstrated cooperation in citizen readmission, the cost will increase from €120 to €135 and from €160 to €180.

Additionally, the Commission has proposed to let external providers of Schengen visas increase their fees in line with the revision.

The maximum amount that external providers, such as visa agencies, that collect Schengen visa applications on behalf of the member states can charge is usually half the standard fee.

The Commission proposes raising this from €40 to €45.

In contrast, the fee for a Schengen visa extension will remain fixed at €30.

EU to introduce digital-only Schengen visa

The EU has also announced plans to bring in a digital-only Schengen visa , which was discussed in 2022.

Travellers will be able to apply online regardless of the country they plan on visiting. The digital version will replace the current system of stickers in passports.

The European Commission says it hopes to introduce the digital platform by 2028.

Do I need a Schengen visa to visit the EU?

The Schengen visa is required for citizens of non-EU countries who do not benefit from the 90-day rule.

Nationals of countries including South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China require the Schengen visa, which permits stay in 28 European countries for up to 90 days for tourism purposes or family visits.

Nationals such as Brits, Canadians, Americans and Australians do not need to apply for a Schengen visa.

Schengen visas are required for citizens from non-EU countries that do not benefit from the EU and Schengen area's 90-day visa-free rule.
