Natural Hot Springs, Chai, and the Timeless Manikaran Sahib

manikaran+sahib+gurudwara+kullu+parvati+valley+himachal+pradesh+india.jpeg

A timeless journey through Manikaran

While sauntering around in Manikaran’s narrow lanes on my recent trip to Parvati Valley , I reminisced about my childhood journeys to Shukkartal and Haridwar with my family.

Like in those religious towns, time didn’t seem to have passed in Manikaran Sahib either.

Young girls dressed up in traditional bright Kullu dresses and Himachali topis waited to be clicked. Streets were lined with kitschy souvenir shops that flaunted neon plastic toys, rudraksha malas , and brass bracelets.

Devoted Sikhs with their Kirpans hanging around their waist walked swiftly towards the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara. Hindu families strode to the Shiva and Ram temple to bathe their young ones who trailed behind eyeing the hot jalebis and crispy samosas that were on display at the local sweet’s shop.

If only their mother could buy them a hundred grams of jalebis the children might walk faster. But the mothers were already thinking about quickly getting their little ones undressed and bathing them in the Manikaran hot water springs. They also had to pay their respects to Guru Nanak Ji or the Ram and Sita adorned in the Sikh and Hindu temples.

After all, the history of Manikaran dictates that the town was touched by both the Hindu gods and Guru Nanak Sahib though at different times.

Legends say that when Parvati lost her earring in Manikaran while taking a stroll with Shiva, Shesh Nag disappeared into the earth with the earring. Parvati asked Shiva to retrieve it, and then he did the Tandava dance to get it back from the thief.

The serpent then threw up the jewel through the water. This earring or Mani(jewel) – karn(ear) gives the town its name.

While Guru Nanak’s legend narrates that when he arrived at Manikaran with Mardana, they collected flour from people to make chapatis. But as there was no fire, Guru Nanak made a hot water spring shoot out of the earth.

Those Manikaran hot springs are still there and make Manikaran a popular place to visit.

You can just spend hours on the Manikaran bridge watching the hustle and bustle of the town. But only if you would be able to take away your eyes away from the picturesque Manikaran gurudwara that sits on the banks of the river Parvati. The milky gurudwara complements the white froth of the unstoppable Parvati bellowing by its side.

But while the Parvati is cold, the natural springs that flow under the gurudwara are sizzling.

The natural water was so piping hot that after a long princely bath in the hot springs of the Ram temple, I had to cool myself by drinking fresh water from the cooler of the Ram mandir. Then I found myself walking around the ageless Manikaran again.

Wooden and concrete homes were jammed against each other. People mingled around temples. While the electricity cables hung over the entire village, nobody seemed to complain.

Hot ginger tea and biscuits were sold in almost every tiny shop for the pilgrims and travelers alike. The town had a mix of local and international tourists for many came to pray while the rest came to see and live and meditate in Manikaran if only for a few days.

Why wouldn’t they? You can go to the gurudwara Manikaran Sahib to eat the free langar. You can walk through the town and drink as many chai and eat as many samosas without lightening your pocket much. If you get tired of Manikaran, you can trudge up the hill behind Manikaran to arrive at the village of Gargi in about an hour and a half.

And if you don’t feel like doing anything, you can just sit in your guesthouse or homestay in the natural Manikaran hot water. Yes, in Manikaran’s homes people have drawn water from the hot springs to make their own tiny private baths. I was astonished to see that even the water streams that ran along the lanes fumed steam.

Imagine if you have the medicinal and mineral-rich hot water right from the Himalayas in your home to dip into whenever you wanted.

I have been to many religious towns and temples while traveling or with my parents even though I don’t follow any religion. But when I was in Manikaran even though the streets were as chaotic as Indian streets can get, I never felt restless .

Manikaran had a peaceful energy that vibrated through the entire place.

Maybe because Manikaran has many mythological stories to comfort you. Or because the tiny town has the most popular gurdwaras and temples and rarely would you see people fighting. Or maybe because you can cleanse yourself every day with herbal hot springs.

Or maybe because you can walk into any little shop and order a tea while watching the world go by as the chai-wallah and you exchange stories of the Hindu gods and the meaning of life.

Or maybe because when you are in Manikaran you would even forget that you are in the Himalayas. The rain would fall like a curtain on the rickety street while you would try to find rainbows and sip tea. Oh, time does stop in Manikaran.

Where is Manikaran Sahib?

Manikaran is a small town in the Kullu district of Parvati Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Manikaran-Manali distance is about 80 km, and you can do the journey in about 3 hours by road.

How to reach Manikaran Sahib, Himachal Pradesh?

If you are coming by flight, the closest airport is the Bhuntar airport in Kullu that is about 36 km from Manikaran.

If you are traveling to Manikaran by road, you can drive from Manali to Manikaran in about 3 hours. By bus, you would take longer but Manikaran-Manali is a frequent bus route. If you don’t get a direct bus to Manikaran from Manali, take a Manali to Kullu bus and then change in Kullu. Kullu to Manikaran distance is about 45 km and getting around is easy.

From Kasol in Parvati valley , you can take a local HRTC bus to Manikaran or Barshaini. The travel time would be about half an hour to one hour.

While coming from Dharamshala, you can take a bus to Bhuntar and then hop onto a local HRCT bus to either Kasol or Manikaran or Barshaini. If you get down in Kasol, take another local Kasol to Manikaran bus. Bhuntar to Manikaran journey takes about one-two hours.

There is no direct Delhi to Manikaran bus and you would have to get down at Bhuntar.

The closest railway station to Manikaran is the Joginder Nagar railway station which is about 148 km from Manikaran.

topview manikaran sahib one of the manikaran images parvati+valley+himachal+pradesh+india

Where to stay in Manikaran, Kullu district?

Manikaran images flaunt the white Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib around which you have many homestays and hotels to stay. You can either walk around the town when you arrive or find a place on Booking .

Hotels in Manikaran aren’t many, and homestays are more popular. A good room would cost rupees 300 upwards.

What to eat in Manikaran, Parvati Valley?

Manikaran Gurudwara gives free langar food that you must have at least once. Otherwise, you can walk around and eat at the many small shops that fringe the Manikaran streets. Food is mostly Indian and made with locally-grown products. Eat paranthas, momos, soups, and Himachal dal with chapati.

What is the best time to visit Manikaran, Manali?

From April until June or July the weather in Manikaran is the most pleasant. Expect the temperature to be around 10/12-28/30 degrees.

Manikaran temperature drops to about 4-5 degrees in December and January. So plan your Manikaran trip around summers. But while the weather is comfortable in June and July, it also rains. Oops.

But as Manikaran is in Himachal Pradesh, expect the Manikaran weather to be unpredictable.

Where to take a bath in the hot water springs in Manikaran?

Throughout Manikaran you will get separate baths for men and women. You can bathe at one of the many Manikaran temples, such as Shiva temple or the Ram temple and Vishnu Kund, or in the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara. Your guesthouse might also have a private bath so do ask.

I also saw open hot spring pools alongside the river Parvati, but the hot water baths in the Ram mandir and the gurudwara were enclosed.

Carry your change of clothes, towel, and toiletries. Take a shower before entering the hot pools. Wearing many clothes in the baths isn’t allowed, and most people bathe without their bare essentials sometimes.

What are the best places to see around Manikaran?

Manikaran to Manali is only a three-hour drive so you can always go to Manali and chill there. As the journey from Manikaran to Kasol is only about half an hour, many travelers do day visits to Manikaran from Kasol. Though I personally don’t like Kasol and you can read my Kasol trip guide to know why, there are many more nice villages around Kasol to visit.

Manikaran to Kheerganga is also a popular route. You can find everything about the Kheerganga trek on my Kalga to Kheerganga via Bunbuni pass hiking guide.

If you like hiking, from Manikaran, trek to the Gargi village and stay there for a day or two.

Of course, you are in Parvati Valley which means you have unlimited access to the Himalayas.

Manikaran Sahib: The Mystical Gurudwara that keeps on giving

Manikaran is a town located only about 5km away from the famous city of Kasol . Manikaran is famous for two things- Its natural hot springs and the Gurudwara . The Gurudwara attracts a lot of pilgrims everyday who are completely devoted to the Lord. The Gurudwara called the Manikaran Sahib is a grand shrine which evokes divinity and devotion into whoever visits it.

It is perched upon a hill and the surroundings are cluttered with hotels, restaurants and other small shops.

The mighty gurudwara remains hidden behind this cluster of buildings. It also had an experimental Geothermal energy plant that is still in the works. Manikaran also has many temples, which attracts a lot of people from the Hindu and Sikh religion. They seek to offer their devotions in return for the blessings from these temples.

The Gurudwara and the Natural Spring

manikaran gurudwara

A lot of people believe that heaven resides in the hot yet comforting pools of natural hot spring that is available in this place. Yet, the real heaven is radiated by the grandiose shrine made of glistening white marble.

The Gurudwara itself is surrounded by the hot springs which emanate hot vapours and engulfs the shrine. The beautiful harmony between the cool fresh wind and the hot steam is a delight.

On the exterior is shrine is constructed of pristine white marble and has several saffron flags flowing on top of it. These flags add a much-needed colour on the otherwise white shrine.

The hot spring is below the temple. The inner sanctum of the gurudwara gets so hot that many starts sweating. Even the floors can get too hot to stand on for more than a few seconds. These can be a little unbearable for tourists, but pilgrims revel on this. The heat from the floors is divine to the pilgrims and they stand there for hours just lost in their devotion towards God. It is both shocking and inspiring.

Recommended: A TOUR TO THE MAJESTIC GURUDWARA – HEMKUND SAHIB

The natural springs are so hot that steam comes out of the radiant stream all the time. The water is contained in a pool that is available for pilgrims to take a bath in. The pool is believed to be extremely auspicious and rinses off any sin that one has committed. The water is so comforting and relaxing that one feels healed and at peace. It is also said to cure muscle pain and arthritis.

All the food that the gurudwara produces is actually cooked by this hot water from the natural spring. They do not really have any stoves or even gas. It is completely cooked by the naturally occurring boiling water.

One can also volunteer at the Gurudwara. This experience is life changing. Devoting a part of ones stays to the service of others is a truly fulfilling affair.

Manikaran: The Town

manikaran town

The place is one of the most magical places in the world. It almost seems that nature has used its imagination to the widest and formed this place. The natural spring flows down the mountains through magically approving curves, as the mountains form a mesmerising yet perfect backdrop for this. The hills themselves are of such varies shapes and colours that one can see every hue available in the colour palate.

There is a small tunnel which leads one to the Hindu side of the town. There are stores lined with religious souvenirs which makes the town seem extremely colourful and vibrant. There is an old legend, which says that this was the place where Goddess Parvati had lost her earring, as she and Shiva were visiting. The earring was then stolen by Shesha Nag- a demon. However, the demon was forced to surrender when Shiva performed is eccentric Tandav Nritya, and shot the jewel up through the water. This myth tries to explain the origin of the hot springs.

Manikaran is a town that is surrounded by this mystical natural spring. It is this spring that gives this town a purpose and a soul. The presence of several temples and the most famous Manikaran Sahib just makes this town even more spiritual and magical. It is a wonderful place for pilgrims , and it is enchanting to see the sheer devotion and love that these pilgrims harbour towards this place and the Manikaran Sahib.

Manikaran, a well-known Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage site, is situated 4 km from Kasol along the banks of the Parvati River in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. Both pilgrims and visitors are drawn to the numerous temples, Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib, and hot springs in the area.

Three hot springs are available for bathing; one is located inside the Gurudwara proper, while the other two are privately owned by the guesthouses. The bathing area is divided into separate areas for men and women. These springs’ water includes sulphur, which has the power to heal illnesses. The water used to prepare the food is hot enough to place the vessels immediately in it.

How to reach

The closest major railroad station is in Pathankot, 300 kilometres distant. Due to their proximity, Kullu and Manali, two more popular tourist sites, may also be reached from Manikaran. You can hire cabs to get from town to town. Many people that travel to Kasol also go to Manikaran. Manikaran and Kasol are only a few kilometres apart, and the main road that connects them is well served by local buses.

Best time to visit

Manikaran, a town in Himachal Pradesh, is located at a height of roughly 1760 metres above sea level. With an annual average temperature of about 10 degrees, this region’s weather is incredibly chilly due to its astounding height. Because of this, a lot of people choose going throughout the summer (April to June), when they don’t feel like remaining indoors to avoid the cold. Additionally, the area is well-known for the numerous natural hot springs that dot the entire town and are a popular tourist destination. Winters might be bitterly cold and severe, but many people still like travelling to Manikaran in the winter.

manikaran sahib tour

Situated deep within the Parvati Valley of the famous hill district of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, the Manikaran Sahib is one of the prominent holy spots in India. Manikaran is located at an impressive altitude of 1760 m. Because of its proximity to the nearby Manali valley, it receives thousands of pilgrims and tourists, particularly in the summer months.

Manikaran Sahib is a vital pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Sikhs. This place has significance in some of the earliest Hindu scriptures that highlight how Manu, the first human on earth, created life and saved this place from a flood. Several mythological tales around the region also document Hindu deities like Shiva, Parvati, and Vishnu.

The Sikh religious beliefs surrounding the place have the same richness as their Hindu counterparts.

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara – Sikh Beliefs

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara

If you are in Manikaran, you must spend some time learning about the origin and history of the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara. Different tales narrated in Sikh scriptures recount plenty about the place’s history. While here, you can witness those stories come to life right in front of your eyes.

Guru Nanak is known to be an extensive traveller throughout his lifetime. He visited not only different parts of India but also other parts of Asia. Hagiographic accounts of the Sikh Guru demonstrate that all of his travels were well classified according to their purpose. His four missionary travels are called Udasis. During the third Udasi, Guru Nanak frequented the small village of Manikaran with one of his choicest disciples, Bhai Mardana. Back in that year of 1574, the idea of a community kitchen was still being popularized by him. Once the Guru and his disciple reached the place, they found themselves starving. Bhai Mardana asked the villagers to donate some raw grains and vegetables, such that he and his master could be sated. The villagers were generous enough to give flour and some other grains. However, the raw food had to be cooked, but lighting a fire seemed extremely challenging in a cold valley with limited resources. This dilemma was countered by the great Guru when he instructed his disciples to lift a mysterious stone from its spot. As soon as Bhai Mardana lifted the stone, hot water sprung from beneath it. This boiling water provided enough heat to cook food. However, the rice and the rotis kept sinking in the water, making it difficult for Mardana to cook anything. When Guru Nanak observed the same, he asked his disciples to chant, “I am going to donate my life in the name of God.” As soon as he said this, the drowned items floated back up.

This incident prompted Guru Nanak to declare one of his most cherished teachings – anything devoted to God will never drown. This miracle prompted devotees to worship that very spot and build a Gurudwara there to commemorate the Guru’s life and teachings. The vast white Gurdwara stands at that exact spot where Guru Nanak and Bhai Maradana cooked langar. Its beautiful complex continues to enchant visitors. It gives everyone a calm surrounding to meditate and synchronize their energy for the betterment of their lives. Every day at the Gurudwara, the Gurbani path is recited along with several other essential verses from the Guru Granth Sahib. Langar, a charitable community dining program run by gurudwaras all around the world, is also served here. Kadhas, an Indian soup made from herbs, is served to every devotee that visits here. This soup has medicinal properties and cures many lung and throat diseases.

The Medicinal Hot Springs of Manikaran

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara

The highly revered Manikaran gurudwara is mentioned in the Twelfth Khalsa, written by Giani Gian Sikh. A tunnel-like corridor inside the Gurudwara leads to a room called the garam Kothi. This is where the therapeutic hot spring exists. As a tourist, you might find the heat inside this room unbearable, but once you get accustomed to it, you will feel relieved.

The hot boiling spring in and around this Gurudwara is of great use both to locals and tourists. These hot springs are known to contain traces of metals such as Sulphur and Uranium, which have healing properties. Pilgrims take a dip into these hot springs a get a respite from the chilling cold that grips the Manikaran Valley. As a tourist, you can try a fun experiment to test the usefulness of the hot spring waters. Buy a muslin potli of rice from the nearby markets and dip it in the spring. You will watch the rice being cooked right in front of your eyes. This property of the spring is utilized by the Gurudwara management to cook food for devotees that visit the place to consume langar or prasad. The shopkeepers of the nearby bazaars use the water of the hot springs situated within the Gurudwara through pipes.

An incredible union of cold and hot water is seen in the Parvati river, producing steam that blends exquisitely with the white surroundings. These springs and their healing properties have intrigued scientists for years.

The Hindu Mythology of Manikaran

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara

The Hindu Mythology surrounding Manikaran Sahib provides a basis for its naming. According to legends, Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati were once exploring the hilly surroundings and the serene forests of the place. Shiva decided to meditate while Parvati took a bath. During bathing, Parvati lost a jewel that she was wearing, and a serpent in the river stole it. Angered by his inability to find the gem, Shiva did his Tandava dance and warned the snake to return Parvati’s earring. The serpent gladly offered the jewel to the Lord and apologized. Manikaran became the name of the place because the Hindi translation for the phrase earring is Manikaran.

Rishi Vedyas predicted the arrival of Guru Nanak at Manikaran in the Bhavishya Purana, further linking the Hindu and Sikh myths of this holy spot.

Best Time to Visit Manikaran

Since Manikaran is located amid the Himalayas close to the majestic Solang Valley, temperatures can reach well below 0 degrees. Tourists need to plan their visit according to weather conditions. Most tourists visit Manikaran during summer months to escape the heat that envelopes the rest of the Indian subcontinent while relaxing in the snowy mountains. Also, most adventurous activities are only allowed in summer, for there is little danger of blizzards and snowstorms.

Manikaran Sahib: A Sacred Town Of Confluence of Faith

Photo of Disha Kapkoti

Manikaran sahib was a unplanned mandatory stopover for me. On my way to Kheerganga, Manikaran was the last spot where I could refill my pocket. I crossed the Manikaran Sahib Bridge and began walking down the narrow lanes of the town with a one-track mind. With the eyes of a robber, I began hunting for an ATM, until I saw a lady sitting upright at the corner of the lane, enjoying the miserly trickle of sunlight.

While I photographed her, the lady gently took out her unusual neckpiece and she was all set to pose. The moment was enough to tell me that this little town of Manikaran Sahib had a lot more character and mystique than I could ever have imagined.

Here's your guide to the places you must visit in Manikaran and the scenic route to reach this small sacred Himalayan town.
