Albedo Travel in Alonnisos

albedo travel alonissos

There are three primary travel agencies in Alonnisos, and each has their own following and and areas of expertise. Because I have family that owns property on the island I’ve never visited there as a tourist per se, so I’m not in a position to provide a detailed evaluation of these agencies on this site. However, I can say with confidence that a few years ago I was very satisfied with the customer service provided by one of them (i.e., Albedo Travel , pictured to your right).

In particular, prior to departing on our trip I wrote an email to Albedo Travel to ask a question about purchasing boat tickets for our return trip to the Greek mainland. Within less than 24-hours I received a very friendly reply to my inquiry from the owner, Kostas Efstathiou. The speed of the response, was, in all honesty, not something I’ve been accustomed to when contacting businesses in Greece. Perhaps that’s been due to the language barrier. In any event, once we arrived in Alonnisos I stopped at Albedo Travel to meet Kostas in person, and found him to be a wonderful person who is clearly dedicated to providing excellent service to his customers.

The best Greek island there is – Alonissos, Greece.

View of Alonissos Old Town on a hill with green bushes

Disclosure : I was invited by the Municipality of Alonissos to travel to Alonissos for 4 nights.

One week in Greece was enough for me to fall in love with the country even though I always refused to. Refused to because Greece seemed overrated and overpopulated at least when I looked at popular Instagram accounts where pretty girls lounged on the roofs of Santorini or partied in Mykonos. Not that there is anything wrong with either and maybe I shouldn’t talk about adding fuel to the fire of overcrowded destinations considering my love for Bali but that wasn’t my idea of a holiday and so I ignored Greece for many years.

Then I got invited to Thessaloniki and Halkidiki and feel in love with the moody skies, the Greek people, and of course the food and with that, I knew I had to return and explore more.

If you like me also want to experience Greece but don’t care for party central you will be glad to hear that there are enough other options if you are planning a Greek islands vacation – 227 to be exact or 225 if you want to subtract Santorini and Mykonos. So on my second trip to Greece, I went to see stunning Meteora, spent some time in Crete, and got to visit Alonissos island.

Travel Diary: Alonissos, Greece

Alonissos, Greece, is one of the smaller Greek islands and part of the Northern Sporades. Of the 24 islands, only four are inhabited including Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros, and Alonnisos.

Stormy sky over the ocean in Alonissos, lone boat in the harbor

I arrived with the evening ferry to a cloudy, dark sky and was picked up by Albedo Travel who had helped to organize my trip. Compared to Crete it was chilly and wet but half an hour later I was at my hotel, drinking Greek wine and munching on a Greek salad, enjoying the nighttime view over the island and the ocean from my cozy and dry hotel room.

While some islands tend to get sad when it rains, Alonissos isn’t one of them. In fact, the rain and the mist which stuck with me for the first two days just added to the atmosphere and, to be honest, I had had an overdose of sun (and still slightly sunburned nose) in Crete that I didn’t mind a bit of gloom.

Alonissos is as local and relaxed as it gets which makes it an ideal holiday destination if you are looking for something less touristy and more authentic and it is also one of the best Greek islands for couples. It is unpretentious yet hospitable, visitors are never bothered but don’t really go unnoticed either. The latter I realized when I had lunch after a walk through Patitiri and got a call from Dias, my local guide, who asked about my whereabouts – a lonely German lady had been spotted wandering around the harbor. This German lady was feeling a little sheepish as I was two glasses of rosé into a boozy lunch at Skipper’s, secretly enjoying the rain and the fact that I could have a nap afterward.

Mind you, I didn’t just nap during my Alonissos stay but instead decided in lieu of beach weather to go on a road trip the next morning to explore. I think it was back in Scotland when I first fell in love with road-tripping and doing it on my own only adds to its appeal. I will admit though that there are not many places I would feel comfortable doing a road trip on my own as a woman. While I know it is only my own fault that I can’t change a tire, I also never stop evaluating my surroundings should I have to stop and if strangers are friends or foes. Luckily I had no such concerns when I was driving through Alonissos as the roads are in decent conditions, I always had a cell phone signal, and felt overall very safe. And of course, it is insanely pretty, rain or shine, as the island has hills and forests, epic ocean views, the occasional sheep family, and to my utter delight the best cats. Driving from Patitiri north you will come to a junction with some large trash cans and a cat family who seems to live here. Nobody will mind if you park your car on the roadside for a bit to take some pictures and get some cat cuddles in, making Alonissos the best Greek island of all times – at least in my books.

Things to do in Alonissos, Greece

Scuba diving.

Alonissos is part of the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades and an absolute paradise for divers. Check the website of Triton Dive Center as they have some very exciting new dive sites opening next year under the patronage of UNESCO. These dive sites and their offers are especially exciting for wreck lovers and tech divers, making them all the more special if you are looking to go scuba diving in Greece. But even if you are a beginner are the dive sites around Alonissos a great underwater playground with much marine life and easily accessible by zodiac.

Tour the Old Alonissos Town

The Old Alonissos Town was pretty much abandoned after an earthquake until the 80s but has now found its way back to former glory. This little town is as quaint as it gets and is a photographer’s heaven. Park your car by the playground and then explore the cobblestoned streets by foot, play with cats, and enjoy the view over the island and the Aegean Sea.

Windmill at Yalia Beach

Alonissos has no shortcoming of beautiful beaches, alas not all of them are suitable if the skies are moody. If you are coming from Old Alonissos Town take a detour down to Yalia Beach, a beautiful bay with an old windmill – the perfect spot for a little photo session.

Agios Dimitrios Beach

This beach is also known as ‘The Pimple’ due to its shape and is the perfect pebble beach, great for a walk or a swim when the weather plays along. There is also a little cafe which was unfortunately closed when I visited but my friend Jayne tells me that they make a great frappe .

Skipper’s.

The aforementioned Skipper’s is the place to eat. I ate there not only once or twice but three times and started salivating just writing about it now. The food here is simple yet refined, offering a modern twist to Greek classics, and you will definitely want to come hungry. Their seafood pasta is so good that the dish inspired this post of the best pasta dishes around the world and also their cheesecake with olive marmalade is out of this world.

If you are heading to Alonissos make this your first stop as they are right on the harbor and don’t feel bad if you go once a day for the remainder of your holiday.

Seafood pasta and a glass of rose on a table

Archipelagos

Another great option for lunch or dinner at the harbor is Archipelagos. When the weather is bad you will have to sit inside and it does get loud and crowded but is oh so worth it. Here you can stuff your face with great fresh seafood and nobody minds when you eat with your hands (I am still unable to eat and deshell prawns with knife and fork – can you?). With the bill, you will most likely get a raki on the house and a slice of their sweet cheese pie – savor it because you will have to look hard to find a yummier Greek dessert.

After a stroll through Old Alonissos Town Hayiati is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the view, and pet yet another cat. They also make great coffee and if a fresh cake is offered, do not decline.

Fanari Fish Tavern

I think I was embarrassed to go back to Skipper’s yet again and so I googled ‘pasta restaurants Alonissos’ which led me to Steni Vala. This little harbor front has a few restaurants and apparently the most popular one is Tassia’s Restaurant. However, I got there for lunch when the sun was finally out and the big dining hall just didn’t look all that appealing to me. Instead, I went to Fanari where I could sit outside and enjoy the views. One of Alonissos most famous dishes is tuna pasta, something I usually never eat as I don’t really care for canned tuna but, oh my word, this pasta was delicious. There is definitely a huge difference between your regular canned tuna and Alonissos canned tuna. Again, you will be offered a slice of cake with your bill and again, you shouldn’t refuse – the Alonissos deserts are worth every single calorie.

Practical tips for visiting Alonissos, Greece

Alonissos harbor with boats in the evening light

  • If you are coming from Athens you will need to take the bus to either Agios Konstantinos or Volos and from there take the ferry with Hellenic Seaways. Try to do the Athens – Agios Konstantinos route as the bus is also organized by Hellenic Seaways and the trip is a lot shorter. Bus tickets are € 18 for the Athens – Agios Konstantinos route and € 35 for Volos – Athens while the ferry to Alonissos, Greece is € 30 for passengers each way. Both ferries were incredibly comfortable and you can buy snacks and drinks on board.
  • While Alonissos is the smallest of the Sporades islands it is easiest if you get yourself a rental car to get around. The roads do get quite hilly and are not really meant for walking but are awesome for road-tripping.
  • There are quite a few Alonissos hotels for all kinds of budget, but I stayed at the Atrium of Alonissos which was a lovely option close to the harbor and not far from the Old Alonissos Town, making it a perfect place to explore from. They also have two pools and a small bar/restaurant – great for a Greek salad and toasted sandwich dinner if you get rained in like me.
  • Alonissos island is trying to go plastic free and there are no plastic bags at any of the shops – make sure to bring your own!

Pin for later!

With so many Greek islands to chose from here are some good reasons why you should ignore some of the big ones and instead head to Alonissos, Greece for your next island holiday. Find some amazing Greek food here, some of the best diving in Greece, a perfect road trip location and of course - cats! #alonissos #greece #sporades #greekislands #scubadiving #alonissosisland

Yes, Alonissos is my favorite greek island, and I’ve been to some…

The tuna in Alonissos is not canned. It is their very special way of preparing tune in jars, traditional way. That’s why it is so delicious. It is made like this only down there. I remember, I was so happy when managed to get ‘alonissos tuna’ on another greek island. I had tuna dish at To Fanari twice, it was so good! It is indeed a great fish taverna.

This island looks absolutely beautiful! I like that it’s not the usul touristy Greek islands that everyone goes to!

Nofilter Travel

It really is – well worth the trip as it is still really authentic and not overrun by tourists (yet).

Island Of Alonissos

Majestic beach of Kokkinokastro in Alonnisos island, Greece

Alonissos is an undiscovered gem of the Aegean . It’s a small island with tranquil beaches and an incredible history of its own.

The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times (some even claim that it was first settled by humans 25000 years ago), and today it’s home to just under 3,000 people, with many areas untouched by tourism.

Alonissos was once inhabited by Greek pirates, who used it as a base for their raids against other countries in the region. Today, this historic town still maintains its charm with many buildings dating back to medieval times— and even ancient ruins !

Alonissos is part of a unique ecosystem as the center of the National Marine park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, which includes six mains islands (Alonissos, Peristera, Skantzoura, Gioura, Kyra Panagia, and Piperi) along with 22 rocky islets. The park is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal – the rarest mammal in Europe and an endangered species – along with 300 species of fish and around 80 species of birds.

When To Visit Alonissos Island

You can expect slightly larger crowds during the summer peak season (July-August), but this is an island that offers a relaxing experience even in the middle of the summer as it’s still relatively quiet.

Where Is The Island Of Alonissos

Alonissos is a beautiful Greek island located just off the coast of Thessaloniki between Greece and Turkey  in the Northern Aegean Sea. It sits between the Greek islands of  Skiathos and Skopelos and is one of the country’s most beautiful places.

How To Get To Alonissos Island

Alonissos is a popular tourist destination with a large dock for ferries and hydrofoils, but it does not have its own airport. That being said, there are many ways to reach the island.

From Skiathos

The closest island to Alonissos is Skiathos, which sits just across the water from Alonissos. Skiathos is a popular tourist destination and has many hotels and restaurants . It  has an airport you can fly to (a 30-minute flight from Athens) or reach Skiathos by ferry.

Ferry Options To Skiathos

  • Depart from the port of Agios Konstantinos; 1.5-hour duration
  • Depart from Volos; 2.5-hour duration

Once in Skiathos , there are 2-3 ferry crossings to Alonissos daily. The ferry trip lasts 2 hours.

From Athens

Fly to Athens and then take a ferry from Piraeus Port to Volos.  Alternatively, you can fly to Skiathos from Athens (30 minutes) or drive/take a bus to Volos (4 hours). From both Skiathos and Volos, you can board another ferry to Alonissos.

Ferry Options To Alonissos

  • Depart from Volos; 4-hour duration
  • Depart from Skiathos; 2-hour duration

Note: First Class Buses depart daily between Athens Airport Terminal 1 & 2 at 8:30 am & 7 pm, respectively, while standard buses depart every hour throughout each day (except Sunday) between 2 pm & midnight, respectively.

Brands We Use And Trust

The best things to do in alonissos, greece.

albedo travel alonissos

There are many ways to enjoy the island, and you can choose whatever works best for you. The following are some of the activities we recommend:

Windsurfing & Watersports

Alonissos is a haven for water sports enthusiasts . As the center of the marine park, and with ample beaches, bays, and clear waters, you could spend all of your time windsurfing, swimming, snorkeling , and for the more adventurous, scuba diving.

Try windsurfing at one of two great windsurfing spots – Laganas Bay or Moudania Beach, which is just south of Agia Marina. This area offers excellent weather year-round and has both light winds in summer and strong winds from October through March.

The local dive shop will provide all the necessary equipment for beginners who want to try scuba diving without breaking their bank accounts; be sure that your insurance covers this type of activity before booking it! If not, don’t worry—you can still enjoy yourself at Laganas Bay by renting snorkel gear from one of its shops or purchasing them online beforehand so there won’t be any surprises when it comes time for check-in. Or bring your own snorkel gear!

Kokinokastro red cliffs beach landscape in Alonissos island

Alonissos is great for those who love experiencing nature and architecture on foot . If you want to explore more of the island itself, leave the beaches for the day and hike through the forested areas or take one of the many island paths.

There are many sites to see along the walking paths, including an old windmill along the cliffs, the stunning view from the top of Kalovoulos Mountain behind the Old Village, the chapel of St. Ioannis, and many ravines, pine forests, and bays.

Many paths wind near beaches, so feel free to take a quick dip when the opportunity arises!

Milia is a small village on the southern side of the island. If you love being outside or just chilling at the beach with nothing but silence around, then Milia would definitely be worth checking out! Milia may not be right up your alley if you’re into partying all night long.

It’s one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for some peace, quiet, and solitude. In fact, it’s so calm here that there isn’t even any nightlife! If your family loves nature and beaches, then this is definitely the place for them!

Aerial view over Patitiri town in Alonnisos island, Greece

Patitiri is a small fishing village on Alonissos, the most popular beach on this island. It’s a tranquil place with all the amenities you need to enjoy your stay.

If you want some peace while enjoying nature in its purest form, the Port of Patitiri would be a great choice! Many restaurants, bars, and shops sell souvenirs and clothing. There are also plenty of activities for children: water sports like windsurfing and kiteboarding are very popular here.

Suppose you want to do a little island hopping . In that case, you should consider visiting nearby islands like Mykonos or Skiathos, which are both popular destinations for tourists who want fun things like diving off cliffs and other water sports!

Where To Eat In Alonissos Greece

Food in Greece - greek gyros with tzatziki sauce and fries on parchment

What are the best places to eat and drink on Alonissos Island?

Alonissos Island has a lot of great places to eat and drink. Here are some suggestions:

Restaurants

There are many good restaurants on Alonissos, including casual tavernas, which serve traditional Greek dishes like souvlaki or moussaka. If you’re looking for something more formal (perhaps with better service), try one of the many dining establishments in town, such as Sea Grill & Bar or Samario Restaurant & Bar . For dessert , there’s Saturno Pizza Bar.

Gyro Taverna

This family-run restaurant offers authentic Greek food , including souvlaki (grilled meat), mezedes (small plates), and moussaka. It’s located in the heart of town and has a charming seaside location.

To Pano Thira Restaurant & Bar

This place is owned by an English couple who runs it well with their experience from living abroad for ten years in Greece since 1997; they know exactly what makes a good plate or cake! The menu offers pizza, pasta dishes, Greek specialties like souvlaki or moussaka, and much more.

The best coffee place is Oasis Cafe Bar, where they serve fresh fruit smoothies made with local ingredients like avocados grown right outside their door! You can also buy fresh produce at farmers’ markets held every Saturday at 10 am ; these markets offer everything from cheese wheels to tomatoes picked directly off their vines by hand rather than shipped thousands of miles away like most other products sold in supermarkets today.

Where To Stay In Alonissos?

There are many places to stay in Alonissos. The island’s west side is quieter but windier, and there are no hotels on this side .

If you want to be near everything and have a fantastic view from your room, head east to Skala or Voudomato.

You can find great discounts during the off-season when prices are lower than in the high season (September through May).

Island Of Alonissos Beaches

Aerial view of the famous Agios Dimitrios (Saint Demetrios) Beach in Alonnisos island, Sporades, Greece

Have we already mentioned that Alonissos has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe !?

  • Agios Dimitrios Beach
  • Glyfa Beach
  • Koukounaries Beach

Megalos Mourtias

  • Chrisi Milia Beach
  • Spartines Beach
  • Millia Beach
  • Kokkino Kastro Beach
  • Leftos Gialos Beach
  • Tzortzi Gialos Beach

Here are some of our faves!

Agioi Saranta

Agioi Saranta, the most popular beach on the island, is a must-visit for families. It has lots of facilities and is splendid for swimming and snorkeling.

Glyfa is a small and quiet beach. It’s suitable for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing under the pine trees. If you want to windsurf here, then be prepared to get blown around by the wind!

Koukounaries

Koukounaries is a small beach that’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. You’ll find plenty of shade here and plenty of places to eat or have lunch on the beach if you’re looking for something more than just swimming in the water. It’s also an incredible spot for windsurfing, diving, and even wakeboarding.

Megalos Mourtias is an excellent place to visit in the summer. It’s not as popular as other beaches on Alonissos, but it has a lovely sandy beach and plenty of outdoor restaurants where you can enjoy your meal after swimming. The water here is shallow enough for children to play in and deep enough to keep away the larger waves that come with windier weather.

Had a bad experience with this company on our recent trip to Alonissos.

Despite making an advance booking with Albedo travel agency in Patitiri, agreeing a 50cc machine (mentioning the UK car licence) and leaving a deposit, the promised scooter was not available on the day with the previous hirer not returning the machine on time. This is understandable, although frustrating and as Albedo travel did not have an alternative vehicle we asked for the return of our deposit. Unfortunately attempts to arrange a hire at short notice with alternative hire companies was not possible.

Returning a couple of hours later to Albedo Travel as they suggested, a suitable machine had now been returned and was available but they were now unwilling to hire it to me on account of my UK car -only licence. The English lady in the Agency seemed to go out of her way to be awkward and the very brief apology despite leaving us hanging around was definitely unconvincing.

One to avoid!

' class=

If you have category P on your licence dated, the should have allowed you to rent it. If they were unsure, they should have preferred to the DVLA site at :

https://www.gov.uk/vehicles-you-can-drive/y

Hi Skiathoslover1.

I wasn't aware of the category P thing, so couldn't really argue the point. Thanks for confirming that.

Not sure it would have made any difference with Albedo. I think the woman in charge at the time just had a mind to be awkward.

Many rental agencies operate flexibly this limitation.

That's why we usually ask for the support of the management of the hotel we stay for information about the island and to rent a bike or car . In this way we ensure their better information and better service or prices. There are many options that we can't on our own to know when we are on a Greek island for the first time.

Anyway Alonissos is a beautiful island with amazing helpful and friendly people.

The driving licence the prospective hirer has, designates the permission applicable to them. If the company were unsure, they should have refered to the UK DVLA site at :

Sadly, They have lost a hire, and the goodwill of a prospective client ...

Hi SkiathosLover1

I agree, you're right. The classifications for UK are approximately the same as those applicable to the Greek driving licenses. The problem is that there was no proper handling of customer. This resulted in the publication of the comment in the forum.

' class=

we were in alonissos and found the same problem with this company, chrissie the English lady was not atall helpful and insisted we could not hire a scooter and was trying to get us to go for a quad bike instead at a much higher rent out cost....instead we went around the corner and got our scooter from one of the greek rental places instead for just 10 euros a day with out any problems....so sorry you had all that trouble x

Thanks to everyone for their support and sorry that Cottontailx had a similar experience at the hands of Albedo Travel.

I think the lady in question needs to check the DVLA website, as Skiathoslover1 has already suggested. Like Cottontailx, I just got an uphelpful attitude, fobbing me off that the UK law had changed and I needed CBT training before I could hire any bike. Plain wrong.

Unfortunately and despite walking around all the other bike hire shops in Patitiri, there were no other 50cc scooters available for the day, so we still haven't seen much of Alonissos other than Patitiri and the Chora. Hopefully we will get back there again in a few years time and next time I will be more certain about what my licence allows me to drive.

Still love those islands.

We’re very sorry you feel you had a bad experience with our office. Our office prides its self that over the 26 years we’ve been operating we have done so within vehicle hire regulations and insurance coverage and stress the safety of our clients.

Alonissos Island: A Secret Greek Destination in the Aegean Sea

If your dream vacation is to escape to an island paradise with breathtaking turquoise beaches, lush mountain sceneries overlooking the Aegean Sea and escaping the crowds, Alonissos Island is the destination you are looking for next summer! Thanks to Visit Alonissos and Albedo Travel Agency, I thoroughly indulged in an unforgettable 3-day experience exploring Alonissos. While tourists stay at popular islands like Santorini or Mikonos, only passionate travelers choose this underrated, yet amazing Greek island where they can connect directly with nature while also having access to the finest villas and most authentic restaurants.

Dolopes Restaurant Leftos Gialos Beach

How to Arrive to Alonissos Island

Alonissos belongs to the Sporades Islands along with Skiathos, Skopelos and Skiros. It is the third island of the group, so the transfer from Skiathos International Airport takes a bit of time. However, after taking a 90-minute ferry ride on the comfortable and safe Hellenic Seaways catamarans, the magnificent mountains and beaches of Alonissos greet you, and you quickly realize that the journey there has been absolutely worth it. Another way to reach the island is using your own private boat. There are many ports on the island such as Patitiri and Steni Vala which have excellent facilities to accommodate yachts and catamarans.

Alonissos Island Patitiri Port

Relying on a specialized travel agency made the entire process much easier. Upon arrival in Alonissos, the Albedo Travel and Visit Alonissos team met us at the port and provided us with useful recommendations and a list of places we could not miss. They also had our rental car ready. As I suggested in my Skopelos review , in Alonissos it is also recommended to rent a small car with 4×4 drive to navigate safely through the narrow mountain roads.

Historic Villages on Alonissos Island

The charming port of Patitiri is the heart of the island. We arrived at this port by ferry after some days in Skopelos. Walking along the waterfront, you can find several bars and restaurants and lively nightlife. The crystal-clear beach of Patitiri is definitely a place not to be missed! Besides, to book most of the tours and experiences in Alonissos, you should visit the agencies in the port, including the Albedo Travel’s office.

albedo travel alonissos

The Old Village (Chora) is spectacularly located inland at one of the highest points on the island. The colorful historic buildings tumble down the hillside, and from the top you have stunning views over the Aegean Sea. The Chora has a magic flair, its cobblestone streets, bougainvillea flowers and traditional architecture are quite picturesque and breathtaking!

albedo travel alonissos

In addition to the countless cafes, restaurants, Orthodox churches and souvenir stores, in the Old Village you can visit the Alonissos Underwater Museum Center , the first of its kind in Greece. Here you can find out about Peristera Island’s shipwreck -around 3,000 amphorae piled up on the seabed- which is open to recreational divers since 2020. If you don’t have a diving diploma, you might consider taking a few introductory lessons during your stay on the island. Still, you can now enjoy the museum ashore, thanks to an immersive VR experience available at the information center.

Wild Nature on Alonissos Island

Alonissos boasts its own Marine Park, also the first of its kind established in Greece in 1992. Since then, the island has been awarded the “eco-tourism island” status, which has turned Alonissos into an ideal destination for nature lovers.

albedo travel alonissos

There are six main islands in the park area -where Alonissos and Peristera are the main ones- along with other 22 rocky islets. The Marine Park was conceived to preserve the biological diversity of the region, and especially the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal . Activities such as bird watching, trekking, climbing, dolphin watching, snorkeling and scuba diving are very popular in Alonissos.

albedo travel alonissos

Unspoiled Beaches on Alonissos Island

Sea lovers and beach goers will be delighted with the crystal clear beaches of Alonissos Island. If you don’t like crowded summer places, you will fall in love with beaches like Agios Dimitrios, Leftos Gialos, Chrisi Milia (the only sandy beach on the island), Kokinokastro and Megalos Mourtias. However, Glyfa Beach was definitely my favorite!

albedo travel alonissos

Glyfa Beach is a peaceful paradise to unwind while waves break on the shore. The colorful, smooth rocks contrast with the clear blue waters in a unique spectacle for the senses. Very close to this beach, you will find Steni Vala port, an ideal place to have lunch in one of its many restaurants or fish taverns. In addition, Glyfa Beach is also home to Suelto Beach Bar , where you can chill out in total tranquility as well as experience their warm hospitality.

albedo travel alonissos

Dining Options on Alonissos Island

After a memorable day of sightseeing or relaxing on a quiet beach, it’s time to taste the delicious Greek cuisine in one of the many restaurants or fish taverns on the island. Impressively, Alonissos Island has the largest fishing fleet in the Aegean, with around 250 boats, so fresh fish is definitely one of their main specialties.

To taste the delights of the sea, I recommend going to Kalamakia Beach where there are several fish taverns such as Maina Tavern , Corali Restaurant and Ta Kalamakia Tavern . The atmosphere of the small pier is absolutely charming with a picturesque panorama of fishing boats with nets and fishing rods moving with the swaying of the waves.

albedo travel alonissos

Another restaurant I loved was Dolopes Restaurant & Island Beach Bar . It is the perfect place to spend a day of complete leisure on the beach and at lunchtime you can savor a delicious meal alfresco under the olive trees. Dolopes also has a bar area and even a swimming pool!

albedo travel alonissos

For a romantic or family dinner in a very enjoyable atmosphere, I suggest Ostria Restaurant . This family business at Patitiri port offers a more modern approach to Greek cuisine and Alonissos delicacies. Don’t miss their version of cheese kataifi and lamb kleftiko!

Ostria Restaurant Patitiri Alonissos

Luxury Accommodation on Alonissos Island

Although Alonissos is a distant island where most visitors are interested in wildlife and water sports, it is surprising to find so many luxury accommodations geared towards travelers seeking peace and relaxation. In a future article, I will share a list of my favorite hotels and villas in Alonissos, all of them family-run businesses with an essence of their own.

albedo travel alonissos

For now, I will highlight ILYA Botanic Suites , a venue just a few steps from my favorite Glyfa Beach that evokes the colors, textures and smells of Alonissos to immerse guests in an experiential journey for their senses. I fell in love with the open-space concept, carefully crafted decor and handmade furniture both in their Suites and Deluxe Suites! In every room, there is a special spot dedicated to a water element, either with a small pool or jacuzzi. For a moment, you feel in direct connection with nature and all you hear in the background is the sea.

albedo travel alonissos

Holidays in Alonissos Island allow you to appreciate nature at its absolute best. Whether you’re looking for a trip with a dose of action or would rather simply relax away and disconnect from everything, Alonissos is the ultimate destination for you. The best way to truly experience Greek way of life, rather than visit popular destinations, is to explore this beautiful, unspoiled island that is just waiting to be discovered!
