Best time for travel switzerland: hidden trails & majestic peaks.
While just about any month is great to visit Switzerland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Switzerland: Hidden Trails & Majestic Peaks tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Spring: The spring is a nice time to visit Switzerland. Noting that very few hotels have air conditioning, the naturally cooler temperatures of spring can be the most comfortable.
Summer: Switzerland is at its peak in summer, with verdant landscapes, lush vineyards, and deep blue lakes. Just note that the weather can get hot, and very few European hotels have air conditioning.
Fall: Fall in Switzerland brings wonderful weather. You may still experience some crowds outside Zermatt and Lucerne, but this is a still a great time to visit.

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES
Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.
Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.
Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"
Snow caps, ice castles and you… One of the world's favorite year-round playgrounds, Switzerland astounds with natural beauty. In summer, sunlight warms wildflower meadows, picturesque mountain villages and glistening lakes to invite in-depth exploration of some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in Europe.
Hotel schweizerhof, lucerne, tauck exclusive – reception at the jungfraujoch ice palace, enjoy cocktails and more at the "top of europe" with an exclusive private reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.
As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). And you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive... a private cocktail reception at the Ice Palace… taking time, of course, to savor the astounding views of the lofty peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch surrounding you!
Private observation car on the Glacier Express
Take in spectacular alpine vistas from our private observation car aboard the glacier express.
Rail travel is one of the best ways to see the Alpine scenery up-close, and the Swiss trains are some of the best in the world. By far the most famous and memorable of these is the Glacier Express, which has connected the major Alpine resort cities of Zermatt and St. Moritz by rail since 1930. Far from being a high-speed train, however, the Glacier Express, due to the sometimes treacherous mountain terrain it has to negotiate, is actually one of the slowest express trains in the world. But you'll travel along silver streams, beneath massive peaks with crystal-blue glaciers and through lush valleys speckled with tiny villages, and the scenery is breathtaking everywhere you look... especially on Tauck's private panoramic observation car aboard this famous train!
Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa
Nights 7 and 8
Experience a unique Grand Hotel ambiance overlooking the Jungfrau in Interlaken
To step into a room or suite at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is to sense instinctively that this is a place of well-being, where hospitality is genuine. Here, amidst the mountains of the Bernese Highlands overlooking the Jungfrau, you can benefit from all the amenities of a grand hotel while enjoying the ultimate in privacy, comfort and remarkable service.
I was expecting amazing mountain scenery and I was not disappointed. What surprised me though was the beauty of the many lakes we saw.

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months after the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Switzerland and Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.
If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Switzerland and of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.
Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:
Tauck's Guest Protection
Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:
Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:
Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.
*Extreme Circumstances: In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.
Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.
- Trip Cancellation – If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. - Medical Expense – Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
- Baggage / Personal Effects Protection – Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
- Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services – Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.
This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.
The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.
To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.
Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage - General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Switzerland or Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Switzerland and Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
To enjoy this active journey through the mountains of Switzerland you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Switzerland is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, many centuries old. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.
In addition to motor coach travel, this tour itinerary includes several excursions by train, boat and water taxi. Getting on and off these conveyances involves walking and stairs. Also, access to public rest rooms often involves climbing a flight of stairs.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.
Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
You can view the reading list here.
Switzerland has many climactic zones. On this journey, the most temperate weather is found in Geneva and Zürich where the average high temperatures from April through September range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C). The high elevation of Zermatt has lower averages ranging from 45 to 65°F (7 to 18°C). The lake district of Lugano experiences the warmest temperatures ranging from 70 to 85°F (21 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly in moderate amounts throughout the year in Geneva and Zürich. Lugano has considerable rainfall averaging twice the amount of either Geneva or Zurich annually.
To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here .
What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
The weather in Switzerland is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.
In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire, but a sports jacket is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts to dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable. During your visit to the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace, warm, layered clothing is recommended for your comfort as the establishment is located 11,000 ft. above sea level.
You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are not generally available due to local fire safety regulations; however, valet laundry, dry cleaning and pressing services are available for a fee.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.
Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Switzerland:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- An optional jacket and tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Switzerland experiences a diverse range of weather and climate due to its varied topography. In general, it has a temperate climate with distinct seasons. Summers are mild to warm, with average temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), while winters are cold, especially at higher altitudes, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. The mountainous regions receive significant snowfall, making them popular destinations for winter sports. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons characterized by mild temperatures and occasional rainfall.
On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits
Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb
Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”
- *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.
So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.
Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.
Packing Tips for Your Tour
Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:
Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
- Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
- Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
- Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
- Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.
Sun Protection:
- Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
- Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .
Medications and First Aid:
- Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
- Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.
Toiletries:
- Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
- Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
- A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).
Electronics:
- A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
- Mobile phone.
- Chargers for each electronic you bring.
- Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
- Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
- Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).
Miscellaneous:
- A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
- Insect repellent.
- Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
- A small travel alarm.
- A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
- A travel pillow.
- Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
- Light sleepwear.
- A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
- Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).
Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.
Electricity
American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.
If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).
It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.
To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.
We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.
Hair Dryers in Your Hotel
Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.
Traveling by coach
Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.
Airport transfers
Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold, and your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. Learn more about Airport Transfers here .
To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.
The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.
Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.
It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.
In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .
Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.
It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.
When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.
Local Specialists
It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.
Your Coach Driver and Travel Director
The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.
For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.
Hotel services
It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

What our travelers say about their trips to Switzerland
Travel tips for switzerland trips.
What time of year is it best to visit Switzerland? It all depends on what you want to do! Late spring and early fall offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds at the must-visit sites in Switzerland, which can make for a more authentic experience. If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland in the winter, you can enjoy a festive atmosphere on special Christmas market and New Year’s Eve tours . Summer is the best time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, because the mountains are clear of snow, and is a popular time of year for trips to Switzerland.
Our Switzerland tours are the best way to see the most popular sites. You’ll get to know idyllic Alpine towns firsthand, with the expertise of your local guides, and skip the lines at attractions that draw lots of visitors. Some of the highlights include:
- Lake Lucerne and the famous Kapellbrücke
- Interlaken, the gateway to the Alps
- A scenic trip on the Bernina Express
- Views of the Matterhorn from Gornergrat
On special trips to Switzerland, you can enjoy seasonal charms by visiting the country in winter. Shop for souvenirs and try local holiday treats at Christmas markets in Alpine towns or raise a toast on New Year’s Eve in Lucerne.
Switzerland is probably most famous for its chocolate and cheeses like gruyere and Emmental (which are definitely out of this world). The country’s regional cuisine also draws influences from France, German, and Italian cooking. Rösti is a dish that’s famous around the country, especially among Swiss-Germans. Rösti is made with grated potato and fried, so it’s a lot like hash browns—making it a popular breakfast option. Other favorites include fondue and raclette, two cheesy and melty dishes, and quiche.
On all our Switzerland tour packages, you’ll have included meals that introduce you to regional eats, as well as free time where you can seek out local favorites on your own. You can always count on your Tour Director to point you toward the best spots—each of our Switzerland escorted tours is led by an expert who knows the region in and out.
Our trips to Switzerland cover all seasons, which mean you can encounter everything from summer sunshine to snow. No matter what, on any Switzerland tours, you’ll want comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing, and packing layers is always a good idea. If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland in the winter, you’ll want cold-weather gear so you’re ready for spending time outdoors. We recommend having waterproof boots, a warm coat, and a hat and gloves.
Once you’ve reserved one of our Switzerland guided tours, we’ll give you more detailed packing tips, as well as all the other info you need to know before you know! Plus, you can download our Tour Companion app before you depart, so you’ll have all the info you need right in your pocket.

Swiss Alps Grand Rail Tour

The Swiss Alps Grand Rail Tour is designed for those who want to experience the very best of Switzerland without rushing around. Lesser-visited locations are also included, giving you more than a mere glimpse into what this lovely country has to offer.
An English-speaking guide and trips on some of Switzerland’s famous panoramic trains are included. You’ll travel with no more than 17 other passengers for a more intimate, instructive, and enjoyable holiday.

Christmas Markets Grand Rail Tour
Our verdict: A 9-day, seasonal tour including Swiss Christmas markets, panoramic trains, and mountain summits
As a shorter, seasonal alternative to their Swiss Alps Grand Rail Tour, Echo Rails and Trails also offer a 9-day Christmas tour. It focuses on Switzerland’s Christmas markets, so you can see the cities in all their festive finery. This trip can only be taken during December.
The tour cost covers travel on Swiss rail services, including mountain railways, and premium panoramic trains. For the latter, first class travel is included. There are also overnight stays in four destinations, where you’ll spend a couple of nights in each.
3 and 4 star hotel accommodation is included, as well as a daily breakfast, 4 dinners, and a lake cruise dinner featuring Swiss fondue. You’ll also have the services of an English-speaking guide, and luggage transfers are taken care of, too.
The Christmas markets and cities you’ll visit are Bern, Lucerne, Zurich, Küssnacht, Basel, Interlaken, Chillon Castle, Vevey, and Montreux. These are a great place to shop for unique decorations, or one-off gifts you won’t be able to buy at home.
Your tour also includes a visit to Chateau Chillon, which has a stunning setting on Lake Geneva, near Montreux. You’ll also attend the Klausjagen festival in Küssnacht, which has been running for an astonishing eight centuries!

Why join a guided tour of Switzerland?
Escorted tours are a popular option for many travellers and there are many reasons why. If it’s your first time visiting Switzerland (or Europe) and you’d rather let someone else make all the arrangements, a guided tour is perfect.
As you’ll be travelling with others, you’ll make new friends and for solo travellers there is often the option to share a room with a fellow traveller.
Travelling on a tour is a great way to familiarise yourself with a country. Perhaps you’d like to stay on afterwards – but the time your tour is finished you’ll have the confidence to see some sights on your own.
One big advantage that comes with a guided tour is the tour guide! Not only will your guide be on hand to answer your everyday questions, they are a wealth of knowledge on the destinations you’ll visit.
Your guide will help you to skip the lines at major attractions and take you to ‘off the beaten track’ places that you may never have heard about if you weren’t part of a tour.
Booking on a tour can help keep your holiday budget in check, too. With the major components of your trip prepaid – transport and accommodation – you only have to budget for some meals, additional sightseeing and incidentals.
Another bonus of joining a coach tour in Switzerland is that extras like hotel porterage, local taxes and tipping (often called gratuities) are all taken care of, so there’s one less thing you have to worry about.
What to look for when choosing a tour
Before you decide on your tour there are a number of things to consider to ensure you are getting the best value for your holiday dollar.
>> Sightseeing inclusions – Which attractions and excursions are included in the tour price? Your tour might stay in Interlaken but does it include an excursion to the Jungfraujoch? If visiting Jungfraujoch (for example) is a priority for you, make sure you know if the ticket price is included or if you’ll have to budget extra for it.
>> Which sites and attractions does the tour visit? – Does your tour include a visit to a particular site or do you just ‘see’ it as you drive past? For example, if you particularly want to visit Chillon Castle , does your tour include that or do you just view the Castle from a cruise on Lake Geneva or from a viewing point beside the road?
>> Optional excursions – Most tours include some sightseeing and offer a list of optional excursions. Prices for the optional excursions are usually available prior to booking the tour. Add the price of the excursions you’d like to do to the base tour price and compare this with the cost of a tour that already includes them. How do they compare?
>> Hotel standard – The price of the tour will reflect the standard of accommodation that you stay in. Tours with 5-star luxury accommodation are going to cost a lot more than tours that use 3-star hotels. Familiarise yourself with the standard of accommodation on the tour so you know what to expect.
>> Pace of tour – Do you want a fast-paced tour to see as much as you can in a short amount of time or would you prefer a tour that travels at a more leisurely pace? Check the tour itinerary to see how ‘busy’ the itinerary is and if it’s right for you. If you don’t want to be up at 6am every morning whilst you are on vacation make sure that your tour itinerary doesn’t require this.
>> Free time – Although you’ve chosen a guided tour for the convenience of having everything organised for you, it’s always nice to know there will be some free time to explore on your own. An hour or two wandering the streets of a quaint village or sitting with a coffee and people-watching can be just what you need after a busy few days on tour. If having a bit of free time is important to you, check how much is allowed in the itinerary.
>> Meals – How many meals are included in your tour price? All the tours mentioned above include breakfast each day but they all vary in the number of other meals included. If you prefer to have as many meals as possible prepaid, consider this when choosing your tour. Alternatively, if you like to have the option of deciding where and when you eat at night, a tour that includes fewer dinners might be the best bet for you.

The itirenary is very good, it covers most of Geneva. The tour guide, Vitali is exceptional, he’s knowledgeable He goes to extra miles to make us stress free, comfortable & safe. He finds ways to open restaurant for us when its supposedly close (after 2pm),make table available when there was none. On our last day, he took us to this amazing & spectacular place for lunch. Last but not the least, I left my wallet/phone in one of the places we went to and he never hesitate to drive back 30 min. away and even knocking on doors(for it was past closing time. His dedication & love for his job is very commendable. Kudos to you Vitali. We appreciate all you did for us making our trip worthwhile & memorable. Thank you, Bella & Dong

I got to see so much. Loved it!
From Prague to Zurich
Following are the things that should be included in your future offerings. - Tours should include some thrilling activities such as speed boat riding, 3D/VR experience, skydiving or other similar activities as an add-on options wherever available in the countries included in the package. This is because mere sightseeing and visit of cultural, religious and traditional places will add little to fun and thrill. - Hotels is the stay should be advised to ensure provision of basis necessities such as sleepers for washrooms, tooth paste. Hotels should also provide at least one or two Halal dishes to the people from Muslim countries.
Swiss Fairytale
CONTEXT: I booked last minute due to another tour from a different company cancelling, and this tour was so receptive to my concerns with fantastic patience and communication in accomodating my booking last minute. Thank you Vitali!! This tour is fantastic. I loved the walking tours as whilst the cities are big it made me feel like I wasn’t missing out on anything. The schedule was packed and the tour guide was passionate about switzerland and gave a great run down of the history behind major regions and landmarks. Well well organised also. Thank you Alex! If I had to pick one suggestion, the only thing I would have liked was more allocated time for lunch/snack breaks (due to how busy our schedules were, most days I ate “lunch” at 4pm or later). This was no rule enforced by the guide, just an afterthought at the end of the day starting to wilt. In saying this, I am appreciative we were able to see so much; I am in my twenties and I’m sure this would be taken into greater consideration for the older generations booking the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to friends.
