Royal Caribbean

Best Time to Cruise for 3 Days

Embarking on a 3-day cruise can be a spontaneous decision or a well-planned escape. However, if you’re keen on maximizing your short getaway’s potential, the timing of your voyage plays a crucial role.

Here’s a deep dive into the ideal seasons, special occasions, and strategic timings for 3-day cruises.

Based on Weather & Seasons

  • Caribbean : While the Caribbean is a year-round cruise destination, December through April offers the most sunny days and least rainfall. However, this is also the peak season, so expect slightly higher prices.
  • Baja Mexico : Spring and autumn are ideal. You’ll avoid the scorching summer heat while still enjoying pleasant temperatures.
  • Australia’s Coastline : If you’re eyeing destinations like Sydney or Tasmania, remember that the Southern Hemisphere’s seasons are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere’s. Thus, December to February (summer) is warm and popular. For cooler temperatures, consider March to May.
  • Europe : May to September offers warm weather and calm seas, especially in the Mediterranean. However, avoid August if you’re not a fan of crowds, as it’s the peak of European holiday season.

affordable cruise lines

Based on Special Occasions and Events

  • Holiday Cruises : Experience festive vibes aboard with themed cruises during Christmas, New Year’s, or Halloween. These can be a delightful way to celebrate, albeit with potential premium pricing.
  • Festivals and Local Events : Consider timing your cruise to coincide with local events at the destination. For instance, cruising to Ensenada during their Carnaval can be an added attraction.

Strategic Timing

  • Off-Peak Cruising : If you’re flexible and looking for deals, consider cruising during the off-peak season or the shoulder months. The ships might be less crowded, and you could snag discounted rates.
  • Long Weekends : For those who can’t take extended time off work, planning your 3-day cruise over a long weekend ensures you don’t burn through those vacation days.
  • Last-Minute Deals : Cruise lines often offer discounted rates to fill up unsold cabins. If you’re game for spontaneity, this can be a cost-effective way to embark on a 3-day escape.

Things to Consider

  • Hurricane Season : If you’re considering the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico, be wary of the hurricane season (June through November). While ships have advanced technology to navigate away from storms, it’s still something to consider.
  • School Holidays : If you’re looking for a quieter experience, avoid times when schools are on vacation as ships tend to be more crowded with families.

In essence, while any time can be a good time for a cruise, being strategic about your timing can enhance the experience manifold.

Whether it’s basking under the ideal weather, joining in festive celebrations, or grabbing a deal, your 3-day cruise can be a pocket of perfection with the right timing.

Coming up, we’ll explore the essentials of preparing for your cruise, ensuring you set sail with confidence and excitement. Stay with us!

packing for vacation

Preparing for Your 3-Day Cruise

Ahoy, future cruiser! The anticipation of a voyage is half the fun. As you countdown to your 3-day escape, it’s essential to ensure you’re well-prepared.

This section will guide you through every step, from cruise packing the essentials to understanding the onboard protocols. Let’s set the course for smooth sailing!

Packing Essentials

  • Documents : Ensure you have your passport (with at least six months of validity), cruise booking confirmation, boarding passes, and any necessary visas.
  • Medication : Carry any prescription drugs in their original bottles, along with a doctor’s note for smoother security checks.
  • Clothing : Pack cruise clothes according to the destination’s climate. Always include a swimwear, formal wear for dinners (if the cruise line requires), comfortable shoes for excursions, and a light jacket or sweater.
  • Toiletries : While cruises usually provide basic amenities, it’s good to pack your preferred brands, especially sunscreen and bug repellent.
  • Electronics : Don’t forget your camera, phone, chargers, and a power strip (some cabins have limited outlets).

cruise packing tips

Before Boarding

  • Online Check-in : Most cruise lines offer this to speed up the boarding process. Complete any necessary paperwork online ahead of time.
  • Research Excursions : Look into shore excursions offered by the cruise line, or plan your independent adventures. Booking in advance can save time and potential disappointment.
  • Dietary Needs : If you have specific dietary restrictions or allergies, notify the cruise line in advance.
  • Travel Insurance : Consider purchasing insurance that covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or any potential disruptions.

Onboard Etiquette & Protocols

  • Muster Drill : This mandatory safety briefing usually takes place before the ship departs. Pay attention and familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  • Tipping : Different cruise lines have varying tipping policies. Some automatically add gratuities to your bill, while others leave it to your discretion. Check in advance to budget appropriately.
  • Dress Code : Respect the cruise line’s dress code, especially in dining rooms. While most 3-day cruises are relatively casual, some might have formal nights or theme parties.
  • Onboard Accounts : Most cruise lines operate cash-free systems onboard. Upon embarkation, you’ll typically set up an onboard account linked to your credit/debit card or a cash deposit.

cruise essentials and cruise packing list pdf

Health and Wellness

  • Sea Sickness : If you’re prone to seasickness, consider packing over-the-counter remedies or wristbands. Additionally, cabins in the ship’s midsection may experience less motion.
  • Stay Hydrated : With all the onboard excitement, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Keep yourself hydrated, especially if you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages.
  • Sanitize : Cruise ships usually have hand sanitizing stations at restaurant entrances. Use them regularly to keep germs at bay.

As you prepare for your 3-day cruise, remember that every voyage is an opportunity for stories, adventures, and cherished memories. With the right preparations, all you’ll need to worry about is soaking in every moment.

In our next section, we’ll walk through making the most of your time onboard, ensuring every minute is magical. Let’s sail onward!

3 day cruise itinerary

Making the Most of Your Onboard Experience

As the ship pushes off the dock and you find yourself surrounded by endless horizons, you’ll quickly realize that the journey is as enchanting as the destination itself.

A cruise ship is a floating world of possibilities. In the confined span of three days, how do you extract the most joy, relaxation, and memories from your vessel? Here’s your guide to optimizing every nautical mile.

Dive into the Daily Itinerary

Most cruise ships distribute a daily program, detailing the day’s activities, events, and entertainment.

  • Plan Ahead : Every morning or the night before, take a few minutes to skim through the offered activities. Circle or highlight those that intrigue you.
  • Try Something New : With myriad options, from art auctions to dance lessons, use this chance to step out of your comfort zone.

3 day cruise itinerary

Savor the Culinary Journey

Dining on a cruise can be an experience in itself.

  • Rotate Restaurants : If your ship has multiple dining options, switch it up every meal to experience a variety of cuisines and ambiances.
  • Specialty Dining : Many cruises offer specialty restaurants (often at an extra charge). A 3-day cruise might be the perfect occasion for a culinary splurge.
  • Stay Hydrated : With all the available delicacies, remember to drink plenty of water.

Entertainment Extravaganza

From Broadway-style shows to live bands, entertainment is at the heart of the cruise experience.

  • Reserve in Advance : Some popular shows might require reservations, even if they’re complimentary. Secure your spot early on.
  • Explore Lesser-Known Gems : Beyond the main theater, there might be jazz clubs, piano bars, or smaller lounges with unique performances.

Relax & Rejuvenate

Remember, it’s a vacation!

  • Spa Treatments : Consider booking a massage or a facial. Some ships might offer promotional deals on port days or an upgraded spa cruise .
  • Quiet Zones : Find that quiet deck or a cozy lounge where you can read, meditate, or simply soak in the ocean vistas.

exercise class

Stay Active

If staying fit is on your agenda, there are plenty of options.

  • Fitness Center : These are usually well-equipped and offer a range of classes from yoga to spinning.
  • Deck Activities : From rock climbing walls to mini-golf courses, there’s usually something to get your heart rate up.

Socialize & Engage

  • Attend Meetups : Some cruises organize meetups for solo travelers, LGBTQ+ communities, or other groups. It’s a great way to make friends.
  • Engage in Classes & Workshops : From cocktail-making classes to art workshops, these are not just learning opportunities but also great social platforms.

Capture the Memories

  • Photo Ops : Take advantage of the ship’s professional photo services, or find those picturesque spots for your snaps.
  • Journal : Consider maintaining a brief daily journal. It’s a timeless keepsake.

A 3-day cruise might feel fleeting, but with the right approach, it can be brimming with memories, adventures, and relaxation.

As you sail through sunrises and under starlit skies, remember to savor each moment, for the journey is as magical as the destinations you’re heading to.

Icy Strait Point

Excursions and Onshore Activities

As alluring as the onboard experience might be, the true adventure often starts when the ship drops anchor. These short bursts of exploration at exotic destinations add layers of memories to 3 day cruise vacations.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or someone seeking local flavors, there’s a world waiting to be discovered onshore. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Research Before You Sail

  • Destination Insights : Familiarize yourself with the destinations on your itinerary. Knowing a bit about their history, culture, and main attractions can enrich your experience.
  • Local Events : Check if there are any local festivals, markets, or events happening during your visit.

Ketchikan

Choosing Cruise Line Excursions vs. Independent Exploration

  • Pros : Hassle-free, diverse options, reliability.
  • Cons : Often more expensive, can be crowded, less flexibility.
  • Pros : Flexibility, immersive local experiences, potential cost savings.
  • Cons : Risk of missing the ship if you’re late, need to handle your transportation and logistics.

Types of Excursions

  • Historical and Cultural Tours : Dive into the rich histories of your destinations, explore museums, ancient ruins, or cultural landmarks.
  • Nature and Wildlife : Engage in hiking, wildlife safaris, snorkeling, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of your destination.
  • Adventure Sports : Think zip-lining, scuba diving, parasailing, or any activity that gets your adrenaline pumping.
  • Local Experiences : Engage in local cooking classes, craft workshops, or village tours to get a taste of authentic local life.
  • Relaxing Retreats : Consider beach days, spa treatments, or serene garden visits to recharge your batteries.

NCL ship at dock

Tips for Onshore Activities

  • Stay Informed About Local Norms : Familiarize yourself with local customs, dress codes, and basic etiquette.
  • Local Currency : While many tourist areas accept credit cards, it’s wise to carry a small amount of local currency for smaller purchases.
  • Safety First : Be cautious with your belongings. Avoid isolated areas, especially if you’re exploring on your own.
  • Stay Hydrated and Pack Snacks : With all the exploration, you’ll need to refuel. Carry water and some snacks, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
  • Manage Your Time : Keep a watchful eye on the time. The last thing you want is to miss your ship’s departure.

As the ship sets sail again and you’re back onboard with a heart full of memories, you’ll realize that these excursions form the vibrant mosaic of your 3-day cruise story.

Exploring new terrains, interacting with diverse cultures, and soaking in unique experiences – it’s all part of the voyage.

  • Port : The left side of the ship when you’re facing forward.
  • Starboard : The right side of the ship when facing forward.
  • Bow : The front of the ship.
  • Stern : The rear of the ship.
  • Muster Drill : A mandatory safety briefing for all passengers.

Booking and Planning

  • Use a Travel Agent : Especially beneficial for first-timers, travel agents can provide insights, deals, and help with the nuances of cruise booking.
  • Read the Fine Print : Understand the inclusions and exclusions. For instance, while meals might be included, drinks often aren’t.
  • Consider Cabin Location : Think about what’s important to you – proximity to the main deck, a room with a view, or perhaps a quieter location.

Onboard Tips

  • Explore the Ship Early On : Take the first day to familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout, amenities, and activity centers.
  • Stay Connected, but Wisely : While ships offer Wi-Fi, it’s often pricey. Consider a digital detox, or purchase a package if staying connected is crucial.
  • Dining Options : Understand the ship’s dining schedule. Some have fixed timings, while others offer flexible dining options.

Budgeting and Expenses

  • Understand Onboard Currency : Most ships operate with a cashless system, where all expenses are charged to your onboard account.
  • Set a Daily Budget : With so many tempting activities and add-ons, it’s easy to overspend. Set a daily limit to keep your expenses in check.
  • Gratuities : Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare, while others add them daily to your account. Check in advance and budget accordingly.

Health and Safety

  • Combat Seasickness : If you’re prone to motion sickness, come prepared with remedies. Midship cabins on lower decks tend to feel the least movement.
  • Sun Protection : With open decks and tropical destinations, don’t underestimate the sun’s strength at sea. Pack ample sunscreen.
  • Stay Hydrated : It’s easy to forget to drink water with all the excitement. Ensure you’re consuming enough fluids, especially if indulging in alcoholic beverages.

Making Friends and Socializing

  • Attend Meet-and-Greets : These are fantastic opportunities to meet fellow travelers and make new friends.
  • Join Group Activities : From trivia nights to dance lessons, group activities are a fun way to mingle.

first time cruiser

  • Day Bag : On embarkation day, your main luggage might take some time to reach your cabin. Carry a day bag with essentials like medications, swimwear, and any other immediate necessities.
  • Dress Codes : Most ships have dress codes, especially for dinner. Pack accordingly.

Be Open-minded and Flexible

Things might not always go as planned. Weather can change, itineraries can shift, and activities might get canceled. Embrace the unpredictability of the sea and go with the flow.

Sailing on the ocean for the first time is an experience like no other. As you wake up to new horizons every morning and sleep under a canopy of stars, you’ll find a rhythm that’s both exhilarating and calming.

Potential Challenges and How to Overcome Them

The allure of a cruise vacation is undeniable, but like any journey, it can come with its own set of hiccups. Navigating the vastness of the ocean and docking at unfamiliar ports can present unique challenges.

However, with a pinch of preparation and a dash of adaptability, most challenges can be transformed into mere speed bumps on the road to adventure. Here’s a guide to some potential cruise pitfalls and how to steer clear of them.

Overcrowding and Overbooking

  • The Challenge : Popular ships, especially during peak season, can get crowded, leading to long wait times for amenities or overbooked activities.
  • The Solution : Plan activities during off-peak hours. For instance, hit the pool when most passengers are onshore, or dine at off-peak times to avoid the rush.

cruise ship in port at St Thomas

Unexpected Itinerary Changes

  • The Challenge : Sometimes, due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, the ship might skip a port or change the itinerary.
  • The Solution : Stay flexible and open-minded. While it’s disappointing, remember that safety comes first. Use this time to explore the ship or indulge in onboard activities you might’ve missed.

Seasickness

  • The Challenge : The motion of the ship can be unsettling for some, leading to seasickness.
  • The Solution : Pack over-the-counter seasickness remedies. Opt for a cabin in the middle of the ship where there’s less motion. Wristbands and ginger candies can also help. If it’s severe, visit the ship’s doctor.

Connectivity Issues

  • The Challenge : Wi-Fi on cruise ships is often slow and expensive.
  • The Solution : Embrace a digital detox. If connectivity is crucial, consider purchasing an internet package, but set expectations about speed. Utilize ports for better connectivity in local cafes or hotspots.

Hidden Costs and Expenses

  • The Challenge : While cruises are often marketed as all-inclusive, many onboard activities, amenities, and off-board excursions come with a price tag.
  • The Solution : Be aware of what’s included in your package and what’s not. Set a daily budget, and be wary of impulse purchases. Regularly check your onboard account for charges.

Cozumel cruise port

Cultural Misunderstandings at Ports

  • The Challenge : When docking at unfamiliar destinations, there’s potential for cultural misunderstandings or faux pas.
  • The Solution : Research the destinations beforehand. Understand local customs, etiquettes, and basic phrases. Being respectful and observant goes a long way.

Missing the Ship

  • The Challenge : While exploring ports, there’s always the fear of losing track of time and missing the ship’s departure.
  • The Solution : Always set multiple reminders and keep a buffer. If you’re not on a cruise-organized excursion, be extra cautious with timing. Consider wearing a wristwatch set to the ship’s time.

Dietary Restrictions and Food Concerns

  • The Challenge : Those with specific dietary needs might be concerned about the food options available onboard.
  • The Solution : Inform the cruise line of your dietary restrictions well in advance. Most ships are equipped to handle various diets. Always communicate your needs to the serving staff.

Remember, challenges are merely the universe’s way of adding a bit of spice to our adventures. With a proactive approach and a positive mindset, any obstacle can be transformed into an opportunity for growth and learning.

FAQs on 3-Day Cruise Vacations

Embarking on a cruise can lead to a sea of questions (pun intended). Here’s a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions about 3-day cruise vacations, paired with answers to help you sail smoothly.

1. Is a 3-day cruise too short to enjoy?

  • While shorter than a typical cruise, a 3-day voyage offers a taste of the cruising experience. It’s perfect for those looking for a quick getaway or first-timers unsure about committing to a longer trip.

2. What is included in my 3-day cruise fare?

  • Generally, your fare includes accommodation, meals in main dining areas, some beverages like tea, coffee, and water, and most onboard entertainment. Extras like specialty dining, excursions, and spa treatments usually cost more.

3. Can I expect the same amenities on a short cruise as I would on a longer one?

  • Yes, most cruise ships offer the same amenities regardless of the trip’s duration. However, the itinerary might be more condensed on a shorter voyage.

4. Do I need a passport for a 3-day cruise?

  • It depends on the cruise’s departure and arrival ports. For closed-loop cruises (starting and ending in the same U.S. port), a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID might suffice. However, a passport is always recommended as it’s required for most international ports.

5. How much luggage can I bring on a 3-day cruise?

  • Cruise lines are generally more lenient than airlines. While there’s no strict limit, it’s sensible to pack only what you need. Remember, cabin space might be limited.

6. Is there a dress code on the cruise?

  • While casual wear is accepted during the day, evenings, especially in dining areas, may have a dressier code. Some cruises have themed nights or formal dinners, so it’s best to check in advance.

7. What if I get seasick?

  • Most modern ships are equipped with stabilizers to reduce motion. If prone to seasickness, opt for a midship cabin on a lower deck. Over-the-counter remedies, wristbands, and ginger candies can also help.

8. Are there medical facilities onboard?

  • Yes, cruise ships are equipped with medical facilities and trained medical staff to handle minor illnesses and emergencies.

9. Can I stay connected while at sea?

  • While ships offer Wi-Fi, it’s often slower and more expensive than on land. Consider a digital detox or use port days for connectivity.

10. Are cruises suitable for kids?

  • Absolutely! Most cruise lines offer a range of kid-friendly activities, clubs, and entertainment options. Always check the ship’s family amenities before booking.

11. Are there adult-only areas on the ship?

  • Yes, many ships feature adult-only pools, lounges, or relaxation zones for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

12. What currency is used onboard?

  • Most ships operate with a cashless system. Charges are made to your onboard account, which you settle at the end of the cruise. The onboard currency is typically USD, but it’s best to check with the cruise line.

13. How do I book excursions?

  • Excursions can be booked in advance through the cruise line’s website or onboard at the excursion desk. However, independent excursions are also an option, often at a lower cost.

14. Can I choose my dining times?

  • Many cruise lines offer both fixed dining times and a flexible “anytime dining” option. You can select your preference when booking.

15. Is tipping mandatory?

  • Gratuities for the crew are either included in the fare or added to your onboard account daily. While not mandatory, they are customary and appreciated.

16. What kind of entertainment can I expect on a 3-day cruise?

  • From Broadway-style shows, live music, and dance performances to comedy acts, trivia nights, and themed parties, there’s a vast array of entertainment options onboard. The exact offerings vary by cruise line and ship.

17. Can I accommodate special dietary needs onboard?

  • Yes, most cruise lines are adept at catering to various dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher. It’s advisable to inform the cruise line in advance.

18. Are there fitness facilities on the ship?

  • Absolutely! Most cruise ships come equipped with a fitness center, and many offer fitness classes, jogging tracks, and sports courts.

19. What’s the difference between inside, oceanview, balcony, and suite cabins?

  • Inside cabins are generally the most economical, with no window to the outside. Oceanview cabins have a window or porthole. Balcony cabins include private outdoor space. Suites are larger, with added amenities and privileges.

20. Are there laundry facilities onboard?

  • Many ships have self-service laundromats and offer professional laundry and dry-cleaning services for a fee.

21. Is it safe to drink tap water on the ship?

  • Yes, the tap water on cruise ships undergoes rigorous filtration and purification processes, making it safe to drink.

22. Do I need travel insurance for a cruise?

  • While not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended. It can cover unforeseen circumstances like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage.

23. Can I bring alcohol onboard?

  • Cruise lines have varying policies. Some allow a limited amount of wine or champagne at embarkation, while others may charge a corkage fee. It’s best to check the specific cruise line’s policy.

24. What safety precautions are in place on cruise ships?

  • All ships conduct a mandatory muster drill to educate passengers on safety protocols. Ships are equipped with lifeboats, life jackets, and trained security and safety staff.

25. Do I need to bring a power converter or adapter?

  • Cruise ship cabins usually have both 110V (U.S. standard) and 220V (European standard) outlets. If traveling from a region with a different standard, you might consider bringing an adapter.

26. How do I handle gratuities for exceptional onboard service?

  • While daily gratuities cover general service, if you encounter exceptional service, you can provide additional tips in cash or add extra gratuities to your onboard account.

27. Can I cancel or change my cruise reservation?

  • Most cruise lines have a cancellation policy that allows changes or cancellations up to a certain date before sailing, though penalties might apply. It’s crucial to review the cancellation terms when booking.

28. Are there facilities for the differently-abled?

  • Cruise ships are equipped with accessible cabins, ramps, elevators, and other facilities to cater to guests with mobility challenges. Always inform the cruise line in advance about specific needs.

29. What happens if there’s a medical emergency in the middle of the ocean?

  • Cruise ships have onboard medical facilities to address emergencies. In extreme cases, passengers can be airlifted to the nearest medical facility on land.

30. How early should I arrive for embarkation?

  • It’s recommended to arrive at the port at least 2-3 hours before the ship’s departure time. This allows ample time for check-in, security, and boarding processes.

Setting sail armed with knowledge ensures a more relaxing voyage. If there are further questions or deeper clarifications needed on any topic, do not hesitate to reach out. Adventure awaits, so prepare well and enjoy the journey!

I've never done a review before, and I suspect this one will be short as 1. it was a short cruise, and 2.  I didn't take as many pictures as I should have.  Still, I promised myself I would do a little review since I didn't see a lot here on the Radiance.  I traveled with my husband (we're both 50), our daughter (6), and my parents (both 69).

We flew in from Phoenix to Long Beach the morning of the cruise, Friday March 11.  Really loved the Long Beach airport and would pay more to fly there than LAX every time.  We called for an uber xl, which was about $60.  The only airport snafu is that we couldn't find my daughter's booster seat at baggage claim.  I asked if it would be on the carousel and was told yes, but, alas, it was not.  Our uber had arrived and I still didn't have the car seat.  Finally, as I was heading to the uber sans car seat, I saw that it had been pulled from the carousel and placed on the side.  Whew!  So, I grabbed it and headed to transportation.  Funny story ... we almost got our ubers confused as my husband, Chris, was waiting for a white van as was another family whose dad just also happened to be named Chris!  It all worked out and we laughed about it.  We saw those people on the ship later.

We got to the terminal at about 10:40 a.m., which was good since our check in time was 10:30 - 11.  We pretty much walked right in with no line.  Our documents were checked and we were cleared.  (We did our tests at Walgreens, which I highly recommend.)  We waited a bit and then were let in with the A03 group.  Here's a pic of us in the waiting area...

We walked around once we were onboard.  We decided to get the cheers package since we had a lot of onboard credit.  Had our first drink at the Red Frog on the lido deck.

Our room was ready by 1:30 p.m.  We hung up my daughter's first cruise sign, got her changed for Water Works, and left her with the grandparents as hubby and I checked out Serenity and the spa.  I asked about how many people were on board and was told about 2K.  Other people said it felt like there were more than that, but I thought it was just about right.

Daughter was up and down the water slides dozens of times.  God bless my father who just kept going with her.  He lives in Florida so they don't get to hang out all the time.

Following are pics of the harbor from the ship and my freezing kiddo...

Hubby and I headed to the spa for the raffle during the sail away party, which was fun.  I thought the music was great, but hubby said it was a little too loud.  (I told him he's getting old!)  We had no luck with the spa raffle.  So, we headed up to the room to get ready for dinner.  We booked the steakhouse for the first night.

I'm a vegetarian, but this was one of the best meals I had on the ship.  I had the stuffed mushrooms along with a pasta created by the chef.  Both were fabulous!  My dad had shrimp cocktail, which he enjoyed.  Husband, I believe, had the tuna tartare.  Mom just had a salad.  My kiddo had the mac and cheese, which she didn't eat, but we did!  She also got fries and chicken, both of which were good.  For the main course, the adults all got steak.  My husband felt his was overcooked, but he had booked a spa treatment for that evening on a special first-day deal, so he had to leave dinner early.  Following are some pics from the steakhouse ...

PXL_20220312_020248728.PORTRAIT.jpg

After dinner, my daughter wanted to check out Club Ocean.  There were a decent amount of kids on this cruise.  I dropped her off and, as hubby was still at the spa, I decided to make my donation to Carnival via the casino.  Now, in the past, I have done pretty okay in the casino.  Not this trip, lol.  Ugh.  I heard machines pinging all over the place.  Saw a few people hit for $3k.  Good for them, lol.  This was just not my trip.  Hung at the casino, which was pretty crowded, for about an hour and then picked up hubby and the kiddo.  Started to watch Addams Family Values in the room with the kiddo while hubby went to the casino.  Didn't get too far into the movie before she fell asleep.  Hubby did well in the casino, which I guess balances things out.

PXL_20220312_053839194.jpg

DAY TWO:  Fun day at sea

The bed was very comfy.  We were in a balcony room 7337.  We slept well except we were close to the elevator and two floors above the casino, so we could hear the rowdies occasionally throughout the night.  (Not complaining.  Hell, I used to be a rowdy in my younger days, lol.)  From our balcony we could see dolphins jumping, which was a treat.

Headed down to get coffee.  Met some of the crew, which was nice.  Daughter searched for ducks.  Hubby had another spa treatment booked, so off he went.  My parents, daughter, and I headed to sea day brunch.  It was good.  Had a nice table by the window so we could see the ocean.

I had a spa appointment before lunch so off I went.  Daughter headed to the water works again to torture my father, lol.  Daughter and parents did the Groove for St. Jude and had lunch on the lido deck.  The sandwich station was by far our favorite place to grab lunch.  We preferred the fries there to the ones at Shaq's or Guy's.

Hubby and I stopped by to listen to some music at the lobby bar (not sure that's what it's called) before dinner.  We enjoyed the violin trio and the other musical acts on board.  Didn't get to any of the shows though.  Stopped into the casino and hubby won again, though his machine malfunctioned so he couldn't get his winnings until 8 p.m. that night.  This night was elegant night, so we went up to get ready for the evening.

Had dinner in the MDR.  Casinos sent a bottle of wine and a steakhouse selection for hubs.  The wine was good, but the steak was not.  He was given a regular steak, not one from the steakhouse.  So, they brought him another one, but it was rare not medium.  My father, who ordered a steak from the MDR, was not happy with his meal.  As a vegetarian, I was disappointed with the lack of options for me.  I ordered the vegetable lasagna, which I found to be gummy.  I didn't eat it.  Kiddo had the nuggets and fries and liked them well enough.  My mom had the chicken quesadilla and enjoyed it.  She and I also had the tiramisu for dessert, which oddly contained coconut.  That night we decided that we would eat the next evening at the Italian restaurant.  Hubby did say that the strawberry soup was good.

After dinner, daughter headed to Club Ocean and we headed to the casino.  Hubby kept winning.  I kept losing.  And daughter wanted to stay at Club Ocean til they closed.  So, hubby and I made our way over to the piano bar, which was a lot of fun.  Picked up the kiddo and she won at bingo!  She was so happy to get her ship.  Here are some pics of the day/evening.

PXL_20220312_165337854.jpg

DAY THREE: Ensenada

We originally booked a whale watching tour in Ensenada, but there was a question about the daylight savings time change and ship time versus Ensenada time.  Plus, kiddo wanted to stay on the ship with the grandparents, so we decided to skip it.

Headed out to breakfast and saw the towel animals had invaded the lido deck.  Daughter loved it.  I had a cheese omelet from Shaq's, which was good.  Hubby had an omelet from the omelet station.  There were no jalapenos on the ship, which was a little bit of a bummer for him.  There was also no bacon for breakfast today.

I decided I wanted to go ashore.  Hubby and my mom didn't want me to go alone (sigh), so hubby came with me.  Grandparents and the kiddo stayed on board.  We were told to bring our Sign and Sail cards, covid vaccine cards, and ID.  So we grabbed our stuff, stopped in the lobby bar for a breakfast cocktail, and then headed out.  There were small busses that would take you into town for $4, which we took advantage of.

We had fun shopping and looking around.  Yes, there were people tryin to get us to buy their stuff, but I didn't find them too aggressive or anything.  We had a drink or two and then headed back to the ship.  I think we were probably ashore for about three hours.  Headed to the Red Frog on Lido for lunch and drinks.  Of course, I had to get the puffer fish cup!

No water works today, lol.  Daughter did Build-A-Bear thanks to grandpop.

PXL_20220313_155543408.jpg

DAY THREE CONTINUED ...

We left port about an hour later than planned due to harbor traffic.

We headed to the Italian restaurant for dinner.  We had Caesar salad, arancini, and burrata as appetizers.  The arancini was great.  The burrata was okay, but I felt the texture was a little off.  The bread they brought us was fabulous and everyone loved it.  For main course,  I had the eggplant parmigiana, which was excellent.  Hubby had the porkchop, which he said was the best thing he had eaten on the ship.  Daughter had spaghetti and fries and both were very good. Mom had chicken parm, which she felt was okay.  I can't remember what my father had, but he ate it all, lol.  We also had the gnocchi, which I didn't care for, but hubby enjoyed.  The tiramisu here was very good.  We will definitely eat here again on our next ship.

After dinner, kiddo went to kids club for the farewell party.  We couldn't get her out of there, lol, and she stayed till the end.  They made posters and she was blue almost from head to toe, which made traveling the next day interesting.  (It was too late and she was too exhausted to get in the shower that night, and we let her sleep in a bit the next morning.)  After dinner, hubby and I watched a bit of the Suns game in the casino.  I didn't play anymore cause I was tapped out.  I went back to the room and hubby played a bit more.

At 2 a.m. we heard some drunk girl yelling all throughout the deck about how she couldn't find her room.  And other drunk, loud people came through all night/morning long.  It was tough to sleep.  Plus, the ship was a bit rocky.

PXL_20220314_013244944.jpg

BACK AT PORT

Got up and finished packing.  Didn't go grab breakfast or anything on the ship today, though the grandparents did.  Carried our luggage off, no issues.  It was an easy process.  Called our uber and headed to the airport.  Security was a little long because one of the x-ray machines broke.  Our flight was a bit delayed though so it didn't really matter.  Grabbed a little something to eat there and that was that.  Got back to AZ and, sadly, I headed to work.

We'll be cruising again out of Long Beach in May on the Panorama!

Thanks for the review! I just booked this cruise for a weekend in May and I've not been on this ship before. We also haven't done a 3-day cruise before so I've been trying to read as many reviews as I can. Can't wait to be on the ship relaxing in the sun!!

Great review! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Tell your pops I dig his cross necklace, looks pretty sweet and I may need to get one like it.

How late was the kids club open at night and did they offer the night owls for a fee for late night?

Californian

Really enjoyed your review and your pictures.  Sounds like we should try the Italian place!

Night owls currently not being offered.

I think the latest they were open was 10 p.m.  At least they were open til 10 p.m. the last night.

We're sailing the Panorama in May!

Thanks for the review! I’m hopping on the 3 day this week and am booked on the Panorama in June. Gotta say, the Radiance looks so much better than what they used to sail out of Long Beach!

Cruise to Mexico on the Carnival Radiance

As vacations or weekend getaways go, a cruise is a much simpler trip compared to any other type of travel. One of my favorite things about a cruise is once you board, you have arrived at your home away from home. Simply unpack and you are done!

Unlike a road trip where you are moving from location to location — on a cruise, there is no need to constantly unpack and pack again, change hotels, or drive from place to place.

So if you’re interested in a fun cruise for a weekend getaway, and are interested in what  Carnival has to offer, this post is for you! When we sailed with Carnival we were on the Imagination ship, but the Radiance is the newest ship in their line for this weekend cruise.

Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Long Beach Cruise Terminal

When you cruise out of Long Beach with Carnival, you’ll depart via the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, which is the busiest port in North America with ships docking five days a week.

The 146,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Long Beach Cruise Terminal has been totally renovated and is beautiful. The palm tree-lined terminal, is huge and allows for quick and easy embarkation.

To enter the terminal, you’ll need to provide a boarding pass and a passport because it’s an international cruise.

Fun Fact: The terminal encompasses the world’s largest, free-span geodesic dome, which was originally built for  Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose plane . I’m probably dating myself here, but the Spruce Goose was located here in Long Beach until the mid-1990’s when it was then moved to Oregon.

Our Mexico 3 Day Carnival Cruise Itinerary on Carnival

Carnival Radiance is a Fantasy-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. We departed on this Mexico 3 day cruise from Long Beach and visited Ensenada, Mexico. Our cruise itinerary:

  • Day 1 – depart Long Beach
  • Day 2 – fun day at sea
  • Day 3 – Ensenada
  • Day 4 – arrive Long Beach

This is a fun itinerary for a weekend getaway, but after experiencing a 3-day cruise, we all agreed that we’d love to try a longer cruise. Between the teen club for my son and all the fun things to do onboard, there just wasn’t enough time to experience it all plus enjoy some downtime.

Boarding The Ship in Long Beach (Embarkation on Carnival) for our Cruise to Ensenada

The cruise to Ensenada sets sail at 5:30 PM and everyone must be aboard 60-minutes before sailing. Staterooms are ready at 1:30 PM, so, make your first day onboard more fun by arriving at the earliest boarding times!

Guests who are scheduled to arrive before 1:30 PM can check their bags curbside so they can be free to enjoy lunch, which will be served on Lido Deck 10 until 4:00 PM.

Tip! Bring a Carry-On Bag: When you first board your cruise ship, it can be a few hours before your luggage is delivered to your stateroom. Pack a few essentials like swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes in case you want to go to the pool or water slides.

Carnival Staterooms

Stateroom on Carnival

There are three stateroom categories on the Carnival Radiance; Interior, Ocean View, and Suite. There are two types of suites; junior and grand. We had an ocean view room, which is listed as sleeping up to five people.

This would be an extremely tight fit. Our room was set up with a king-size bed and a Pullman (a bed attached to the wall — like an upper bunk– that can be pushed up for more space when it’s not being used for a bed).

We found we spent very little time in our room and used it mostly for sleeping and ‘getting ready’ for the day or dinner.

There is so much to do on the Carnival cruise and with a three-day cruise, we found we spent very little time in our room and preferred lounging at the pool to the stateroom.

Planning Your Day Onboard

Each day on the cruise you will receive a “Fun Times” itinerary that includes everything there is to do onboard. It shares sections for “top entertainment’, “food”, “drinks”, “spa”, “music”, “movies”, “casino”, “shopping”, “kids & teens” as well as a schedule for everything happening with the times and locations.

It’s your cruise ship bible and we carried it with us and constantly referred to it throughout the day and evening.

Sailing With Children or a Teenager

Teenagers on Carnival Cruises

When we sailed on the Carnival Imagination, it offered three clubs for kids; Camp Ocean for 2–11 year-olds, Circle C for 12-14 year-olds and Club O2 for 15-17 year-olds. Our son had just turned 16 and loved the teen club.

It opened around noon daily and closed at 1 A.M. As I shared above, my husband and I found that our son wanted to hang out with the other teens and for the most part planned his days and nights around the club.

The teens in Club O2 hung out in the club room, went to onboard shows, the video arcade and met for meals. Our son had a great time and loved connecting with other teens and my husband and I found we were on our own for most of our cruise — having dinner on our own and enjoying many of the onboard shows.

I’m sure if we did a longer cruise, there would be more family time, but with just three days my son opted to hang with the other teenagers on board.

So you know: The kids and teens clubs are all included in the price of the cruise.

Food On Board the Carnival Cruise

Carnival imagination

There are lots of eating options onboard Carnival for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late-night munchies and snacks including these options incorporated in your cruise price:

  • Main dining room
  • Blue Iguana (Mexican Cantina)
  • Guy’s Burger Joint
  • Pirate Pizza (24 hours)
  • Carnival Deli (24 hours)
  • Lido Restaurant (Buffet)
  • Soft-serve ice cream (24 hours)
  • 24 Hour Room Service

The most notable of the restaurants is best-selling author, restaurateur and Food Network personality Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint which strives to bring all the authentic appeal of a roadside burger shack as the cool poolside spot for hot burgers and hand-cut fries.

The busiest spots for lunch seemed to be the Burger Joint and Blue Iguana Mexican Cafe, both located on the Lido Deck. These two are quick and easy and located near the pool.

You can also head inside on the same deck to check out made to order pizza and deli sandwiches as well as the Lido Deck buffet.

Dinner has many options as well, but we opted for the dining room each evening, which includes a three-course meal. You have a choice of two seatings– 6pm or 8:15pm.

If there’s one thing about cruises, it’s that you have lots and lots of choices and you’ll certainly never go hungry! You can eat at all these places  on the Carnival cruise.

Food Allergies: If you have dietary restrictions like I do (gluten-free) they are more than willing to accommodate you. I ordered my meal for the following evening during dinner and they would create whatever dish I wanted gluten-free.

Pool & Outdoor Bars

carnival imagination pool

There is one resort-style pool on the Carnival cruise to Mexico and it is located on the Lido Deck. On either side of the pool, you’ll also find a Jacuzzi.

The main pool area is one of the most popular spots on the cruise during the day. There are lots of spots in both sun and shade to relax and enjoy the views of the Pacific ocean.

You’ll also find lots of fun activities happening on the Lido Deck — we caught a hairy chest contest that was fun and funny to watch.

3 day cruise on carnival

Also on the Lido Deck, you’ll find the Red Frog Rum Bar and Blue Iguana Tequila Bar.

There is also an adults-only (21 years+)  outdoor space on the Promenade level called Serenity with a large hot tub and lounge area with chaise recliners.

WATER WORKS

Waterworks on Carnival Imagination

Carnival has a waterpark called WaterWorks and it includes a twister waterslide, a double straight slide, two mini slides and a spray park. We traveled in March, which can be hit or miss as far as weather.

During our cruise, we had a bit of rain on day one and it was a tad chilly for the waterslides for us.

That didn’t stop loads of other cruisers from enjoying the slides. I’d love to head back during a warmer month and spend a good deal of my day here!

Evening Shows & Entertainment

The evening schedule regularly offers 20+ options of shows, art auctions, comedy, karaoke, trivia, meet & greets and so much more.  On a three day cruise, it’s really impossible to do it all, so you’ll want to choose wisely!

We really enjoyed the comedy on board and made a point to go to one of the three nightly shows in the Xanadu Lounge. They offer PG and adult versions (18+) of the comedy shows. Our son really enjoyed the comedy as well and joined us most evenings for the PG show.

We were really impressed by the comedy shows, musicians and the entertainers for the “Showtime” extravaganza shows in the Dynasty Lounge.

Onboard, you’ll also find the Mirage Piano Bar, Illusions Nightclub (18+), Shangri La Lounge, Dream Bar, Atrium Lobby Bar, Alchemy bar where they specialized in martinis and cocktails and have a casino.

Ensenada: A Day In Port

Port day in Ensenada

Day two of the cruise is spent docked in Ensenada. The ship arrives at approximately 8:15 am and doesn’t depart until 5:30 pm. You can spend your day onboard the ship, on an organized excursion or explore the town of Ensenada on your own.

There are more than 20 shore excursions you can book when you buy your cruise or while you are on the cruise ship. Excursion options range from nearby wine country tours of Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley), to surfing, kayaking, food tours and lots more.

During our day in port, we chose to explore the town on our own. We’ve visited Ensenada and the wine country many times, so we enjoyed visiting a local museum, lunch at Muelle 3 and strolling through town.

Don’t Miss the Sunset

Sunset from Carnival Cruise

The sunrise and sunset can be spectacular sailing on the pacific coast. I caught a gorgeous sunset on night two of our cruise from Long Beach to Ensenada. Make sure to plan to be outside for sunset at least one night to truly enjoy mother nature at her best!

I’m a fan of World Nomads for short-term trips. Protect yourself from possible injury & theft abroad. Read more about why you should always carry travel insurance .

Getting to and from Long Beach to Your Cruise

Long Beach Carnival cruise terminal is 23 miles from Los Angeles International Airport; travel time is approximately 50 minutes. It’s 12 miles from Long Beach Airport; travel time is approximately 20 minutes.

There’s a garage right next to the terminal and the daily rate is $20. You can also get dropped off by taxi or shuttle.

Taking a Carnival Cruise? Here are a few tips:

Need a hotel the night before or after your cruise? There are many places to stay in Long Beach. There is a wide range of hotels, from budget to luxury. For a luxury hotel that won’t break the bank, I recommend the  Westin Long Beach , which is currently the  #1 hotel on Tripadvisor .

For a mid-level hotel, I suggest the iconic Queen Mary .  Finally, for a budget hotel, try the Royal Inn Motel Long Beach . You can also check HotelsCombined for the best Long Beach Hotel Rates .

Hotels in Long Beach: Check Trip Advisor reviews for all Long Beach Hotels .

What to pack:  The temperatures each season vary greatly, but even in summer it can be chilly at night and very warm during the day. I visited in March and was very happy to have a light down jacket , warm socks (I love Ice Breaker ), a waterproof outer layer and rain jacke t, and some hiking boots (I love Keen ). If you are visiting in Winter, you’ll want to bring heavy-duty layers.

Best Time of Year for the Long Beach to Ensenada Cruise: My favorite months for the cruise are October and November. The weather tends to be warm, but not hot. Spring can be hit or miss. You may have summer-like weather or some rain. Early summer may bring foggy mornings, but they should burn off by about 10am.

6 Indispensable Items to Pack for a Carnival Cruise Vacation

  • Get the Cruising Guide to Southern California: Golden Gate to Ensenada, Mexico .
  • I always bring Bonine on a cruise. It’s for motion sickness and similar to  Dramamine but doesn’t make me drowsy.
  • Bring a good quality mirrorless camera for getting those beautiful photos of the ship and Mexico. I use the Sony Alpha a6000 .
  • You’ll get a lot of sun on board and it can be deceiving with the cool breeze, so make sure to bring Neutrogena Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum Spf 45
  • A great cross body travel bag . Crossbody bags are great for your day in Mexico. The bag hangs across your chest to keep all your valuables safe!
  • Don’t forget sunglasses for the beautiful sunny days at sea. A.J. Morgan Unisex Sunglasses are a great choice and very affordable!
  • Water shoes are a great item to pack for any pool or beach vacation. They take up little room when packing and great if you end up at a beach that is rocky or with very hot sand.

Ah, yes, memories. I remember when the dome was built for the Spruce Goose. Now, it’s where folks can depart for weekends or weeks! Thanks for the share about this quick trip.

It has literally been a decade since I last did a cruise, but it was with Carnival and seeing your photos certainly brought back fond memories. I was the one on the Pullman bed and the teen club kept me occupied leaving my parents with lots of free time too!

Wow I never realised you could book such a short cruise (never thought of it actually). It might be the perfect trial for me as I am not sure if a cruise would be my thing but I could probably do three days to check it out 😀 How does it work with passport control on the cruise if you’re going to Mexico?

Gorgeous sunset! I’m impressed that they have a club for teens that’s obviously interesting enough for them that they prefer it.

I lived in Southern California for a while and had quite a few friends who went on this cruise. They all loved it and reading this now makes me understand why! It sounds like a great break from things. And I have been to Ensenada which is a good place to spend the day!

We have friends who have done this cruise but we never have tried one. I think a short one like this would be a good introduction. Not having to continually pack and unpack as you move from place to place sounds inviting, and so many dining and entertainment options. Hmmm…..

It always blows my mind how much can get packed into these ships! They truly are entertainment destinations on the move! Awesome guide for the Carnival cruises.

I absolutely love the sunsets one can capture from a cruise! The Carnival Imagination cruise looks pretty awesome and it is nice that they had a teen’s club – that kept your teenager entertained! I love cruises – especially the pools, the dining options and the activities on board. Good that you also went to explore the city when the cruise was docked on port even though you had visited Ensenada earlier – many people do not explore the city and choose to stay on board!

A short cruise is just what I may need to get over my cruise hangup. Somehow I have a feeling it would be too ‘tied-down’ as compared to a land trip. So much food on board!

I have been wanting to take these short cruise. We love cruising and it is such an easy and affordable way to getaway for the week. I’d actually like to do the one that stops at Catalina as well.

Carnival Splendor

Get to Know Carnival Splendor

It’s hard to tell which onboard space best represents Carnival Splendor — they all seem to hint at the amazing time you’re going to have. El Morocco Lounge hosts comedy shows, musical performances, karaoke and more… and wears its 1930s namesake clearly on its nameplate. The words “Royal Flush Casino” incite visions of winning, while our onboard jazz club — The Cool — simply says it all without saying a word. And Fahrenheit 555 ™ can be found not only at the height of elegant dining, but at the actual apex of the ship. If you like your fun to flow, there are options aplenty. If you list “splishing” and “splashing” among your favorite things to do, there’s Carnival WaterWorks ™ . Those into sitting and sliding are invited to try the all-new Green Lightning thrill-slide. How about floating or swimming around? Carnival Splendor has pools all over the place, including the midship pool featuring a retractable roof that makes any day a pool day. So whether you splish or splash, you’ll find hydro-excitement galore. If relaxation is your thing, Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ is more your place. Or if you’re looking to take relaxation to the extreme, direct your attention to the Cloud 9 Spa ™ , featuring more (and better) ways to kick back than just about anywhere else, on land or at sea. You haven’t lived until you’ve relaxed in a Thalassotherapy pool, or chilled — so to speak — in a dry heat chamber.

Carnival Cruise Line temporarily moving Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Va. after bridge collapse

The next seven-day Carnival Legend trip scheduled for March 31 will operate out of Norfolk.

BALTIMORE -- Carnival Cruise Line said Tuesday that it is temporarily moving its Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. Officials said guests will return to Norfolk on Sunday and be bussed back to Baltimore.

Officials say guests are being informed of this change.

Royal Caribbean International's Vision of the Seas is set to return to Baltimore on April 4, however, no official changes have been made.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted. We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas' ongoing and upcoming sailings," said a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean.

A cargo ship crashed into the bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended, Coast Guard officials announced Tuesday night.

Rescuers pulled two people out of the water. One person was treated at a hospital and discharged hours later.

"Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

I've been on 2 ultra-luxury cruise ships — endless caviar and free flights make the $685 per day worth it

  • The cruise industry's  new ultra-luxury ships  could be worth the expensive fares.
  • Wealthy cruisers get high-end amenities like complimentary flights, caviar, and wine.
  • Luxury small-ship cruising has becoming increasingly popular.

Insider Today

Say goodbye to questionable lunch buffets and tiny, windowless cabins. On ultra-luxury cruises , travelers get mountains of caviar, roundtrip business-class flights, and floating Rolex stores.

When you think of a cruise, you might picture the giant ships run by companies like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. On these family-friendly floating resorts, activities like go-kart tracks, waterparks, and virtual reality arcades are commonplace.

On smaller, more expensive cruises, these large and loud amenities are replaced with peace, quiet, and foie gras.

Cruises are generally considered an affordable vacation option, with necessities like food and a cabin included in the base fare.

3 day cruise on carnival

However, many mass-market cruise companies are increasingly following the budget airline model : Charge a cheap fare and pile up plenty of irresistible pay-to-play amenities.

Travelers could easily accidentally blow past their budget by the end of the vacation.

But guests luxuriate on high-end cruises, many of which are all-inclusive and don't have this problem.

3 day cruise on carnival

Sure, luxury cruises have a higher base fare. But you'll never have to reach for your wallet once on board.

That's about as stress-free as you can get with a vacation.

"I'd rather have a few empty beds and get the right guests at the right price," Michael Ungerer, CEO of MSC Group's new luxury cruise line , Explora Journeys, told Business Insider in 2023. "Most of [the amenities] are already included, so we don't have to upsell."

After going on two luxury cruise ships, I now understand why so many wealthy travelers are splurging on these vacations at sea.

3 day cruise on carnival

In 2023, I spent one night on Explora Journeys' Explora I while it was docked in New York and three nights on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Grandeur while it sailed roundtrip from Miami. Both were complimentary non-revenue events for travel agents and media.

Seven Seas Grandeur's least expensive 2024 cruise is a seven-night roundtrip Miami voyage in December, starting at $4,800 per person — about $685 per day. (Travelers can book their own flights and pre-cruise hotels for a discounted fare.)

Meanwhile, Explora I's most affordable itinerary is a $3,030-per-person, 10-night November sailing from Barcelona to Bridgetown, Barbados.

Expensive? Yes. But on a cruise, money buys happiness.

3 day cruise on carnival

On both ships, the fare includes complimentary bottles of Champagne, WiFi, endless alcoholic beverages, and access to the spa.

With Regent Seven Seas, pre-cruise hotels, every on board restaurant, flights to and from the ship (business class if international), and most excursions are also included.

Ironically, a higher price means a smaller ship.

3 day cruise on carnival

The 922-guest Explora I stands at 813 feet and 63,900 gross-tons. The 746-guest Seven Seas Grandeur is smaller at 735 feet-long and 55,000 gross-tons.

To compare, Royal Caribbean's most popular and the world's largest cruise ship, the 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas , is a casual 1,196 feet long and 248,663 gross tons.

We’ll likely never see Icon of the Seas’ waterslides and theme park amenities across Regent Seven Seas' or Explora’s fleet.

3 day cruise on carnival

But small ships have two big benefits: exclusivity and the ability to fit in more desirable ports.

The Grandeur is scheduled to sail to destinations like Oranjestad, Aruba, and Castries, Saint Lucia, while Explora I is planned for Hawaii and Casablanca, Morocco.

Icon of the Seas is exclusively sailing in the Caribbean this year.

Luxury ships still have some traditional amenities like pools, restaurants, and bars — just with an upscale flair, of course.

3 day cruise on carnival

Instead of arcades, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have cigar lounges.

Instead of a kid's playground, the latter has a quiet library.

Even the drinking water is better: No need to travel to Erewhon to sip on crystal-infused water. Just head to Explora I's spa instead.

The devil (quiet references to quiet luxury) is in the ships’ details.

3 day cruise on carnival

Explora I has the first Rolex store at sea. The Cartier boutique is right next door.

Up a few decks, travelers can workout at the Technogym Artis Line-supplied gym, where a treadmill costs $20,250 and an elliptical $15,500.

Meanwhile, Seven Seas Grandeur is decorated with 503 chandeliers and a $6 million art collection that includes several original Pablo Picasso pieces and a custom Fabergé egg.

As expected, the food on these luxury ships are comparable to Michelin-starred restaurants.

3 day cruise on carnival

Both floating five-star resorts have lunch buffets of raw seafood, lobster tails, and crab legs.

For dinner on the Explora I, travelers can dine on the six restaurants' wagyu tataki, grilled octopus, and aged prime rib with potatoes and caviar.

The Seven Seas Grandeur's five restaurants all serve some form of black truffle, sturgeon caviar, or foie gras.

3 day cruise on carnival

For a 10-night cruise, Regent Seven Seas says its new ship carries 1,200 pounds of lobster, 20 pounds of caviar, and 5,000 bottles of wine — the most pricey at $2,500.

Expensive food means expensive service: Like many high-end on-land restaurants, the hostess always offered me a black napkin when I wore dark pants.

Dinners of steak tartare, lobster, and wine were as commonplace as the scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet.

3 day cruise on carnival

And, they're free, according to the laws of " girl math ."

By the end of my second night on the Regent Seven Seas ship, "I'm tired of eating caviar" went from being a joke to a serious statement.

If we're stereotyping, cruise ship bars can be less-than-luxe.

3 day cruise on carnival

But don't call Explora I's Lobby Bar, which looks like it came out of an actual hotel bar, "trashy." After all, its background music comes from the overhead Steinway piano.

Starbucks outposts are becoming increasingly popular on mass-market ships.

3 day cruise on carnival

But wealthy cruisers don't get to wake up with green siren-decorated cups of caffeine.

Instead, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have their own coffee shops serving delectable espresso-based drinks and a separate afternoon tea service.

Like the lack of mediocre coffee, travelers on these fine ships will never be stuck in a tiny windowless interior cabin.

3 day cruise on carnival

The smallest stateroom on the 461-cabin Explora I starts at 377 square-feet and flexes high-end amenities like a Dyson hairdryer.

The 373 cabins on the Seven Seas Grandeur start a bit smaller at 307 square-feet. At least it comes with L'Occitane en Provence products.

Both options have walk-in closets, floor-to-ceiling windows, and balconies. That's unheard of in the cheapest cabin on most mega-ships.

But one of the most pleasant differences between ultra-luxury and mid-tier cruises isn't in the amenities or dining.

3 day cruise on carnival

It's the general ambiance.

Ultra-luxury ships aren't designed for cruising families with young children . The two ships didn't have cartoonish decor, loud lounges, or an unbearable number of children that could've kicked my fight-or-flight response.

Instead, the high-end vessels' common spaces were modern, mature, and relaxing.

If it seems like everyone you know has recently booked a cruise, you’d be correct.

3 day cruise on carnival

Popular cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival have recently seen off-the-charts bookings.

The same applies to the industry's more niche and expensive peers — especially as travelers have increasingly splurged on luxurious vacations like small-ship cruising.

In February, Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Regent's parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings , said demand for its luxury brands has been "very high."

After eating caviar and black truffles for every dinner on the Grandeur, I now understand why.

We'll be back with more news tomorrow.

Officials say they are transitioning from search and rescue operation to a recovery operation.

US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police officials say that based on the frigid temperature of the water and the length of time that had elapsed since the bridge came down there was little if any chance that the six missing could be found alive.

Maryland's senator has praised the work of first responders, saying their heroism is a "ray of light on this dark day".

Emergency workers managed to stop traffic along the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the Dali container ship put out a mayday call.

Chris Van Hollen said their actions "saved lives" and he was "thankful for them".

A team of construction workers were repairing potholes along the bridge at the time it collapsed.

Eight people were initially reported missing, but two people were found, with one suffering serious injuries.

A short while ago, we heard from the executive vice president of construction company Brawner Builders, who confirmed the six workers still unaccounted for are presumed dead.

Six workers missing after the Baltimore bridge collapsed are presumed dead, the executive vice president of Brawner Builders has confirmed.

Jeffrey Pritzker told our US partner site NBC News that there was one survivor.

The company is not releasing names at this time.

Eight people, who were working on the bridge at the time it was struck by the Dali cargo ship, were initially reported missing.

Two of them were found, with one suffering serious injuries.

The other six have been missing for more than 12 hours.

Maryland's emergency management department has raised its state activation level.

It is now registered as 'full' - meaning an incident has occurred that may require significant resources.

As a result, the state's emergency operations centre has been "fully staffed".

The state's activation levels change based on a variety of factors.

The most influential factor is the occurrence of a significant incident, which is a term used to describe a single or multi-jurisdictional incident.

A construction worker has said he was told his missing colleagues were on a break when the Dali ship crashed into the Baltimore bridge.

Jesus Campos told the AP news agency some members of staff were sitting in their trucks when the bridge collapsed.

The Brawner Builders employee said he learned about the disaster from a co-worker and immediately worried about colleagues he knew were working on the bridge.

"When he told me that, they came to mind and I was praying to God that nothing had happened to them," he added.

"It is so hard for me to describe. I know that a month ago I was there, and I know what it feels like when the trailers pass.

"Imagine knowing that it is falling. It is so hard, one would not know what to do," he said.

One person involved in the Baltimore bridge collapse has been discharged from hospital, an official at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre has told AP.

Dr David Efron did not comment on the nature of the patient's injuries, and the hospital has not released their name.

Eight people were initially reported missing after the collapse.

Two people have been found - one was said to have serious injuries, while the other did not require hospital treatment.

Search and rescue operations are continuing this evening to find the six construction workers still missing.

The US transportation secretary has said the path to rebuilding the collapsed Baltimore bridge will not be quick or easy.

Pete Buttigieg described the bridge as "one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure".

"It has been part of the skyline for this region for longer than many of us have been alive," he said.

He has also taken the time to thank first responders and offered comfort to those "who woke up today to the news that no one wants to receive".

"This is an excruciating day for several families," he said.

Clearer satellite images have emerged of the moment the Dali container ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The vessel crashed into the structure after issuing a mayday call and losing power.

Earlier, Maryland governor Wes Moore said the ship was travelling at a speed of eight knots at the time it sent out its distress call.

Within minutes of departure on Tuesday, the faltering container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Here is a timeline of the Singapore-flagged vessel's collision, in local time (four hours behind British time).

1.04am: Loaded with shipping containers, Dali departs from Baltimore's port, heading to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

1.24am: Dali slowly approaches the Key Bridge, according to video captured by StreamTime Live.

1.24am and 33 seconds: The ship appears to suffer a total power failure as all its lights go out.

1.25am and 31 seconds: About a minute later, the ship's lights flicker back on. Black smoke starts rising from somewhere aboard the ship.

1.26am and 37 seconds: The ship's lights go dark again.

1.27am: Dali appears to be colliding with one of the Key Bridge's piers. The US Coast Guard receives the first report of a collision.

1.27am and 10 seconds: The ship's lights come back on.

1.28am and 48 seconds: The roadway of the Key Bridge begins collapsing.

1.29am: Most of the bridge's span has plunged beneath the water.

1.40am: Baltimore City Fire Department has dispatched rescue teams for the Patapsco River, with reports of multiple people in the water.

1.50am: The first fire unit arrives on the scene.
