PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting Review: A PGA Pro’s Experience

I recently took one of my students for a full bag fitting at our local PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL. In doing so, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to do a professional PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review.

Our  PGA TOUR Superstore full bag fitting was an amazing experience for us. Our fitter, Charles Moore, was a master fitter with over 20 years of experience. He used high-end technology like the Trackman Launch Monitor and SAMPuttLab putting analysis tools and software to diagnose any issues.

The three-hour session ran through all of the clubs in Lincoln’s bag. Charles started with irons, followed by Lincoln’s putter, wedges, and finally with his woods and driver. The time flew by, and the insights we learned will surely help Lincoln going forward.

After a 3-hour fitting, a few things we learned were:

  • Change Lincoln’s 7-iron to a more upright degree to tighten his shot distribution.
  • Shorten his driver to gain more control off the tee.
  • Minor tweaks were made to his wedge lofts, gapping, and bounce.
  • The putter was looking good.

I’ve been a golf instructor for 27 years and have been certified by the PGA for 15 years, and this is my first full bag fitting. After this experience, I’m convinced that a proper fitting is something all serious golfers need to do.

The only drawback could be the cost. Individual club fittings start at $40 to $50, while a full bag fitting at PGA Tour Superstore costs $99 to $300 ( check your local PGATSS stores pricing ). The more expensive fittings use more premium technology to analyze your swing.

If you spend hundreds or thousands on golf equipment and hours at the range or course, I think most golfers will consider this a solid investment. But please read on to decide for yourself, and at the end, I dive into the specific costs.

A PGA TOUR Superstore club fitting uses readings from technology such as Trackman  and SAM PuttLab  to recommend the best way to improve issues with your game.

That was exactly what our Studio Fitter, Charles, did as we went through the fitting, starting with Lincoln’s irons and then moving on to his putter, wedges, woods, and driver.

Here is a quick bit about our Studio Fitter:  Charles is originally from Gainesville, Florida. It was clear he had a true passion for golf. In talking with him, we found out he began his golf journey at 7, and today, at age 45, he is still just as passionate. He originally got his start in the golf industry in 1995, where he worked as a caddy, and then moved into the retail space in 1999, working for a store in Myrtle Beach. Charles has been a master fitter for over 20 years  after becoming certified through major golf vendors, including Callaway, Taylormade, PING, and Titleist.

I was thoroughly impressed with the Studio Full Bag Fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore, and I know that my student Lincoln was also. The following are the positives and negatives we both took from the experience.

  • It can help you get a good understanding of your swing tendencies
  • It can help you see where your equipment is helping you
  • It can help you see where your equipment is hurting you
  • It can instantly help you improve your game with equipment modifications
  • A fitting is not a cure-all for an ailing game, but a compliment to lessons as well as practice
  • It could be considered too expensive for some (I’ll cover the full costs below)

Lincoln and I will remember the Studio Full Bag fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL, for years. Our fitter, Charles, shared his decades of experience and sincerely wanted to help Lincoln reach his full potential.

Additionally, all the various reports from tools like Trackman and SAMPuttLab provide a great deal of valuable information after the fitting. As a coach , that information is great for me to go through with my students after a fitting session and when we are at our next session together.

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone to go through a fitting, even if it’s not a full-bag fitting.

Lincoln will work with a 7-iron with a more upright degree to help balance his contact on the face. After looking through the SAMPuttLab reports, it was good to see that his putting and putter were right on. His wedges also looked good, with some minor suggestions to change the gapping or the distance between clubs. He could also tweak the widget lofts and bounce.

The driver fitting takes the most time, and Charles had some expert insight to share. He noticed Lincoln’s driver was too long, and this is a common problem for many golfers. He cut down his driver right there, which should immediately save Lincoln some strokes.

I’ll go into more detail as I cover each club and what was looked at and share some pictures.

“It was cool to learn about different aspects of equipment and how it can affect your game. It was very helpful and helped coach and I make  some good decisions about equipment changes I should make to help further the work we are doing together. It’s crazy that only a degree or two of lie angle can make such a big difference. Getting a fitting can help a golfer in many ways, and it might be a good idea to consider getting one done.” ~ Lincoln Nascimento [My student who received the fitting]

computer images showing launch monitor data from irons like impact height, impact offset, dynamic loft, face angle, face to path, spin axis, spin rate, spin loft, attack angle, club path and more

In our club fitting , Charles had Lincoln warm up and get loose in the hitting bay. After that, Lincoln hit several 7-irons to get some baseline numbers from Trackman . Key areas that were looked at included:

  • Where on the clubface strikes were made at impact
  • The path Lincoln was swinging as he approached the ball at impact
  • Whether his clubface was square, open, or closed at impact
  • His spin rate on shots
  • His overall shot dispersion

Once these baseline readings were made, Charles measured the lie angle of Lincoln’s 7-iron and its length . These factors often play a key role in the patterns a golfer shows in their shots.

Lincoln’s irons were pretty close to the standards for the club brand he plays.

Result: With all the information gathered, Lincoln hit a second 7-iron that was more upright than the standard . This significantly helped balance out where on the face he was making contact with the ball and tightened up his shot distribution.

Next up was the putter fitting stage of the session. The Science and Motion , or SAM PuttLab, was used in this area. This awesome technology helps take a deep dive into the dynamics of golfers’ putting and how their path and face react at impact.

putter fitting at pga tour superstore during full bag club fitting

Putting is very much an individual thing and is as much a feel and comfort thing as anything else.  If a golfer can consistently deliver the putter face squarely into the ball at impact, then how they accomplish that does not matter. What you are looking for with poor putters is issues with face control   at impact  and things like distance control.

Lincoln’s putting is consistent regarding how his face comes into the ball at impact. While there were some suggestions for putters to try, we were both pleased with how his baseline numbers looked .

Result: No changes were made to his putter.

Charles Moore, master fitter, works with golf student at launch monitor during PGA TOUR Superstore full bag club fitting

Following the putter fitting, Charles worked with Lincoln on his wedges. With a wedge fitting, like with the irons, the fitter looks first to see a player’s tendencies.

Charles had Lincoln hit several full swing, half swing, and open face lob shots with each of his wedges . Things that are being looked at with the wedges include:

  • The bounce on each wedge
  • The grind on each wedge
  • Gapping a player has between wedges
  • Club length, shaft type, and grip

Result:  Based on the findings of Lincoln’s tendencies and performance with his current wedges, some suggestions were made to slightly modify his gapping, lofts, and ever so slight changes to his bounces.

driver fitting at PGA Tour Superstore full bag club fitting using trackman hitting bays and launch monitor

The final stage of Lincoln’s full bag fitting focused on his woods and driver. Most of the time spent in this area was focused on his driver.

Once again, the process is pretty much the same as was the case with the irons and wedges. Lincoln started by getting warmed up and then proceeded to get into capturing data with his current driver.

Again, a baseline is set to see his tendencies, and then the actual fitting or suggesting of changes is made.

Key Takeaway: The biggest insight with this portion of the fitting was the massive difference between the length of a driver on the PGA TOUR vs. what the average amateur carries in their bag. The PGA TOUR average driver length is 44.75”, compared to the average amateur’s driver clocking in at 45.5” to 46.5”.

Charles quickly pointed out that most drivers are simply too long for the average golfer , which is a big reason why control is such an issue.

Result: Lincoln and I agreed, and he chopped his driver down to help gain more control off the tee.

Now, this may sound great, but what is the cost of a PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting? Well, types and pricing may vary depending on the store location. The following is pricing at my local store in Altamonte Springs, FL.

At stores using technology like the Trackman and SAMPuttLab, most individual club fittings range between $49 and $99. The Full Bag Fittings cost $300.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • A 25-minute performance evaluation for any club: $49
  • A fairway, hybrid, or wedge fitting: $59
  • A driver, iron, or putter fitting: $99
  • A Studio Full Bag Fitting (3 hours): $300

At stores that don’t use as expensive technology, you’ll pay around $40 for an individual club fitting. The Full Bag Fittings cost $99.

Club Fittings to Consider:

Our fitter, Charles, walked us through a prioritized list of clubs you should get a fitting for if you couldn’t afford a full bag fitting or just need help with one or two clubs.

Each store has varying options and prices, so check the offerings and prices at your local store . You can book a reservation now if you’re ready.

I always believed that combining regular golf instruction and club fitting could pay big dividends to any golfer. After going through a full-bag three-hour fitting session at the PGA TOUR Superstore, I am now convinced that a proper fitting is something that all serious golfers need to do.

Golf equipment off the shelf or purchased online is not one-size-fits-all.

  • Having clubs that are too long, too heavy, or don’t have the right lie angle can absolutely cost you strokes.
  • Having a toe-hang putter, when you are better off with a face-balanced one, can cost you strokes.
  • Having wedges with improper gapping or an incorrect bounce can also cost you strokes.

Getting a proper fitting done can truly help your game.

Alyssa Hockenbury general manager of PGA Tour Superstore in Alamonte Springs, Florida

“Regardless of your level of play, getting custom-fit golf clubs offers some key advantages. From drivers to putters, it’s important that each club in the bag adds to a player’s skills while compensating for their tendencies. It is far better to improve your game using golf clubs that match your swing characteristics and don’t impede your improvement.” Alyssa Hockenbury, General Manager of PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL

  • Club Repair
  • Fitting Services
  • Numerous Lesson Programs and Packages

PGA TOUR Superstore uses varies types of high-quality launch monitors by Trackman and Foresight GC2s. Both are premium launch monitors professional golfers use to track and improve their swing. Trackman is the leader in the launch monitor sector of the game. The data from the Trackman monitors at the PGA TOUR Superstore are very accurate.

PGA TOUR Superstore is owned and operated by Arthur Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot. Blank is also the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

Employees of the PGA TOUR Superstore do not make commissions. Sales associates won’t try to pressure you for a sale to make a commission. Glassdoor.com says they make between $40 and $63K annually regardless. Indeed.com states Retail Sales Associates make around $14 per hour.

You can try out a large selection of irons and other clubs at the PGA TOUR Superstore. The best way to truly see what clubs may be best for you is to get a fitting while there. If you are buying clubs, you can get a basic fitting for free as the associate helps you find the right clubs.

You can get free fittings at PGA TOUR Superstores if you are buying clubs from them. A rep will let you test out the equipment in the hitting bays and help you find the right clubs to fit your swing tendencies. But it won’t be as in-depth as a full-bag club fitting. Pricing varies by location, but you can review the prices at your local PGATSS and book a reservation online.

I hope this PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review has proven helpful for you. It is crazy to me, after 27 years working in the golf business and the last 15 years as a PGA Professional, that I have never watched a full bag fitting in its entirety.

When I left the fitting my student Lincoln went through at the PGA TOUR Superstore, my appreciation for the work club fitters do to help people enjoy the game more grew by leaps and bounds. I sincerely appreciated my experience at the PGATSS and know my student also gained a great deal from it.

If you have been on the fence about getting professionally fit for golf equipment, I will say this… don’t hesitate any longer, as a fitting can be what your game has been looking for.

PGA Superstore Fitting Review: In-Depth Analysis

In the world of golf, nothing is quite as satisfying as the perfect swing. But to achieve that perfect swing, you need the perfect club.

Every golfer, from the seasoned pro to the weekend warrior, deserves equipment that fits their unique swing mechanics.

Enter the PGA Superstore, a fitting institution that promises just that: a tailor-made golfing experience that could transform your game.

This review will take a deep dive into the world of PGA Superstore fittings and break down their process, offerings, and customer experience to provide an all-encompassing perspective of what you can expect.

PGA Superstore Fitting Review

The Fitting Process – A Personalized Approach

Upon entering the PGA Superstore, clients are greeted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, who carefully guide them through the fitting process.

This personalized approach begins with an interview to assess your skill level, goals, and any physical limitations.

The fitter then analyzes your existing equipment, swing mechanics, and launch data, which sets the foundation for the club fitting experience.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The PGA Superstore employs state-of-the-art technology during the fitting process to ensure the most accurate and precise results.

Clients are fitted in dedicated hitting bays equipped with launch monitors, such as TrackMan or Foresight GCQuad, which capture crucial data points like ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and carry distance.

This advanced technology, combined with the expertise of professional fitters, enables the customization of club specifications to suit each golfer’s unique swing characteristics.

A Comprehensive Club Selection

One of the most significant advantages of the PGA Superstore fitting experience is the extensive selection of clubs from leading manufacturers, such as Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, and more.

This diverse range ensures that the fitting isn’t skewed by limited club or shaft options and allows you to find a club that feels just right.

PGA Superstore also offers a broad range of club customization options, from lie angle adjustments to grip replacements, further enhancing the tailored experience.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore fitting experience is not exclusive to the elite players. Their services cater to all skill levels, from the eager beginner to the seasoned professional.

This inclusivity, coupled with the relaxed, no-pressure environment, means golfers of all abilities can benefit from their expertise.

However, it’s important to note that while the PGA Superstore fitting service is comprehensive, it comes with a price tag.

Fitting fees, although comparable to those of other major golf retailers, may feel steep to some, particularly those new to the sport.

It’s an investment, certainly, but one that many will argue is worth making for the noticeable improvement it can bring to your game.

Irons, Woods, and Putter Fittings

The PGA Superstore fitting services cover every club in the bag, offering comprehensive fitting solutions for irons, woods, and putters.

Iron fittings focus on factors like shaft material, flex, length, and lie angle, while wood fittings emphasize loft, shaft, and clubhead design.

The putter fitting process, often overlooked, is a critical aspect of the overall experience, as it can significantly impact a golfer’s short game.

Through the use of specialized technology, such as the SAM PuttLab, the fitter analyzes a golfer’s putting stroke and recommends the ideal putter type, length, and lie angle to improve consistency and accuracy on the greens.

Additional Services and Support

The PGA Superstore fitting process does not end once the optimal club specifications are determined.

Clients receive continued support, including club adjustments and fine-tuning, to ensure their equipment remains tailored to their evolving needs.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore offers extensive follow-up services, such as golf lessons and practice facilities, to help golfers refine their technique and develop a deeper understanding of the game.

This holistic approach to the golfing experience sets the PGA Superstore apart from competitors, as it emphasizes ongoing improvement and fosters a lasting relationship with clients.

The PGA Superstore fitting experience is an invaluable resource for golfers seeking to elevate their game through custom-fit equipment.

The combination of personalized attention, cutting-edge technology, and an extensive club selection ensures a comprehensive and accurate fitting process that caters to each golfer’s unique needs.

While the cost of a professional fitting session may be a concern for some, the long-term benefits, such as improved consistency, increased distance, and overall enhanced performance, make the investment worthwhile.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore’s commitment to providing ongoing support and additional services, like golf lessons and practice facilities, demonstrates its dedication to helping clients achieve their full potential on the course.

If you’re a golfer looking to take your game to the next level, the PGA Superstore fitting experience is a must-try.

With a team of experts, state-of-the-art technology, and a wide selection of clubs, this fitting process will provide you with the tools and knowledge necessary to unlock your golfing potential.

Driver fitting at PGA Tour Superstore: Free vs. Paid

I’ve never had a formal fitting. I’m traveling out to California in a couple weeks, and I thought I’d drop by a PGA Tour Superstore and schedule a 75-minute paid-driver fitting to see if my current driver,  Ping G410 Plus , can be better tailored to me, or if there’s a different driver to consider. I called up the store to tell them my plans, and the fella on the phone suggested/recommended that instead I can come into the store with my driver tweaked with a free fitting that lasts about 20 minutes max, where I can also try other drivers as well.

I’m not sure which is the better route to take. What do you think?

I think the primary difference is the experience of the person conducting the fitting, and the amount of time spent.  The paid fitting would probably be about an hour with a fitter who has a bit more training.  The free fittings are usually with a store employee in the main hitting bays letting you sample the different drivers, making some small tweaks, and explaining the numbers.  If you are just looking to dial in your current driver or compare it to some of the stock new releases, stick with the free. However they might not have the different shafts to try in the free hitting bay.  So it depends on how in-depth you'd like to be.

If getting fit at a box big store always go for the paid option and upgrade it to the tour van option.

If it was me and I was in Cali I would not go to pga superstore for a fitting. I would find one of the local fitters. If I was in San Diego area I would try to get into one of the OEMs for a fitting, followed by TruSpec or cool clubs

Again, This is why I miss Edwin Watts in Florida. You go into any of their stores and fittings are free. They know they will get a sale regardless so why make you pay for it if they aren't getting any commission? That's how fittings should be. You should not have to pay to get fit for clubs. That's my opinion though.

I would go with the free first and see what you think and what they suggest.

:L.A.B.:

My last experience with a free one wasn’t great. I will admit it ended up alright. He kept bringing shafts with a pretty big markup and said he didn’t have any of the stock shafts available for the driver I was testing except in stiff or senior. None of the stiffs worked at all. Most of the regular shafts he was bringing me were $75 to $100 extra. I actually found one of the stock shafts in the next bay over . It wasn’t that hard. It performed as well to me as the more expensive shafts he was bringing me. He tried explaining why it didn’t work as well but I’m a simple guy and according to where the ball was landing on the sim it was in the same area as the shafts he was trying to get me to buy. This will be my 4th year using that driver because I keep finding the fairway.

They know they will get a sale regardless so why make you pay for it if they aren't getting any commission? That's how fittings should be. You should not have to pay to get fit for clubs. That's my opinion though.

At a box store maybe. They are getting paid somehow by the store,  but it’s also why box store fittings aren’t the best.

an independent fitter who has spent time training and learning their craft not only should be paid but shouldn’t give a discount if one buys. You are paying the fitter their time and their experience.

I mean, Edwin Watts you went in and they ran through all the heads and shaft options to include the stock options and you could see those numbers. Of course the workers are still going to get paid by the store. I’m not saying they aren’t getting paid by them. What I am saying is they aren’t getting paid by the oem to sell you their products or pressure you into buying aftermarket shafts that perform the same as a stock shaft you hit.

They kind of are.   Many of the employees in golf stores are on staff with an OEM and will often push their products.   They do receive compensation from the OEMs.

My ex used to work at a camera store, and she said all the OEM reps would come in and offer each salesperson spiffs if they were able to sell their brand. I think retail is retail—that said, at least there's a launch monitor that'll give the customer some info/proof of what's happening before making a choice. I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened with @Bossfan .

Alas, TrueSpec is no longer/never was in the Bay Area. They all have appointments available. So I've got good options, free or paid. So now I just gotta think about which way to go about it. Thanks for your input!

My post was meant as a cautionary tale. Just pay attention to what you’re seeing during the fitting whether it’s paid or free. Ask the price of each shaft. Take notes mental/on paper how each shaft performs. I mostly pay attention to 3 things distance, dispersion and launch angle. I know the other info is important but I understand those 3. I have had better fitting experiences at the PGASS. That last one left me with a bad feeling. Good luck on your search

I regularly hit clubs at the PGA Tour Superstore near me, the free fitting was a way to see if a stock club fit my eye, sound, look, feel needs. They also have some different shafts available in the free bays you can try, mainly to do with stiff, regular, X-stiff etc.

So now that I like a certain club, go get fit to see if it is for me. I have a pretty good idea what shafts I like, but new equipment gets introduced all the time. I do believe the Van fitting is way more comprehensive than the freebie, but freebie gets you warmed up and let's you test what you might be interested in and gives you a start at least.

I would probably avoid Club Champion, they always try to up sell you. Golftec usually has a more limited number of options to try.

I actually found a fitter in the PGATSS free bays that I really liked, so I would try and visit him, he eventually became the Tour Van fitter and he was better IMO than the guy they had previously. You probably don't have that much time since you are visiting so YMMV.

If I still am not sure, I might go to another place a week later, hit the same club especially if it is stock and see how I still feel about it.

Even if they aren't on staff, many will have their own biases. I had one kid tell me I needed a Tensei orange shaft over and over because he played it, I passed because I didn't like the feel of it and didn't think it was correct for me.

I've never had a good experience at the box stores, Edwin Watts, PGA SuperStore, or Club Champion.  The goal is to sell you something there.  It was frustrating to say the least.  So much time and money spent for clubs when they could have been much better, with not much more effort.  I did find a fitter at a local course that was honest, took the time to understand the goals, and time to fit correctly.  I think you would be better served finding a small shop that can take the time.  I also want to say, have a goal in mind.  If your Ping is a fairway finder, what do you hope to accomplish?  If this is truly exploratory, take the free and go have some fun.  If you find that you see greater results and a reason to buy a new club, go find a fitter locally with that club in mind.  You can absolutely nerd out on shafts, tip trimming, weighting, counterbalance, grips etc and a good fitter will know what to do to accomplish the goal with the best results.  I've never seen that any any of the aforementioned stores.

What do you think?

... Most golfers fit into stock shafts. Every time I have been to a fitting from someone really good an aftermarket shaft works a little better for me, feels a little better and gives me a slight upgrade in numbers, but the stock options were always pretty close. There are just so many great stock shafts these days. That said, personally I would always like to know how all shafts work for me in a new driver. You will be able to hit all the stock shafts with a few upgrades in the PGA SS hitting bay for free. As others have said it's a good starting place. ... But many SS's have a new high end fitting center with virtually every shaft to try and dial in the perfect combo and the tech goes through training. I don't do well being fit indoors so I wouldn't pay for premium fitting unless it was outdoors, but that's me. I have not tried one of the SS premium fitting centers so I don't know how they compare to even an outdoor OEM Demo Day which has always been good to very good.

For club champion all someone has to do is tell the fitter their budget and that they don’t want to be fit into anything that doesn’t stay in their budget. If the fitter doesn’t want to or pushes back, then ask for a refund and walk away. Their business practice isn’t necessarily to upsell, but rather to only use aftermarket or their oban shafts.

Its easy to get them to meet your needs if you tell them that

On 1/18/2024 at 10:31 AM, SteveGH7 said: I think the primary difference is the experience of the person conducting the fitting, and the amount of time spent.

^^ Yes what he said, especially about the shafts.

The quality of your free fitting will vary widely dependent on the quality, experience, conscientiousness* of the store rep - vs a certified club fitter (who works separately from sales).

Maybe urban legend but I've heard that some store reps may juice the LM to make the new club you're testing look better....

Also... out of the three fitting choices you mentioned - my rec would be Cool Clubs.

GolfTec = limited selection. May or may not have a certified fitter.

Club Champion = imho way too upsell oriented. No stock shafts available .. in case that might actually work better for you. Will push shaft Pure'ing.

This is a great point. I know when I’m up and rolling, I can find the fairway somewhat consistently. What I keep wondering about is, can I get more distance out of it while maintaining a level of forgiveness? When I play 18-holes, I usually switch to a ball with more distance, but I’d like to see if there’s something I can do with the club.

In my opinion the only difference is with the fitting you pay for, you are in a studio with no interruptions and the fitter has 50 -75 shafts available to try for your fitting. Higher end shafts at a lot higher cost. The free fitting is probably with a less experienced fitter in a bay next to others. He would probably only have 8 - 10 shafts for you to try.

I have had a fitting at Club Champion and it was really good. I was not pushed into anything, only suggestions were given. I know enough about the swing numbers to make a good decision but appreciated their thoughts. At Club Champion, they took the fitting cost off my purchase.

I have also been fit at the PGA SS. (Free Fitting) It was good as well, probably not as well trained fitter as Club Champion. I agree with Sam, chisag stock shafts work out well for most golfers.

PGA TOUR SuperStore Fitting Experience Can Fix Your Gaps

pga tour superstore full bag fitting

I walked into the PGA TOUR SuperStore with a pocketful of gift cards, earned from some fortunate finishes in Southern Nevada Golf Association tournaments.– By Brian Hurlburt, LasVegasGolfInsider.com

I also walked into PGA TOUR SuperStore with some flaws in the ‘ole golf game, among them, a gap and inconsistencies in distances between 195 yards and 230 yards.

I walked out with a couple new Tour Edge clubs and new found confidence after a fitting session in the STUDIO with longtime Vegas expert Bobby Weaver.

The state-of-the-art STUDIO is the PGA TOUR Superstore’s premium golf club fitting experience and can help any level of golfer improve their swings and their scores.

The experience includes an analyzation of current clubs and a conversation about the goals of the session. Weaver has worked with beginning golfers up to top professionals, utilizing his experience and technology to determine the best outcomes.

“Brian came in with struggles with his three and his four iron and distance inconsistencies after about 195 yards and to about 230 or so yards,” Weaver said. “What we found is his lofts were a little too low to get the ball vertical for his clubhead speed. So, we needed to change the center of gravity on a couple of his golf clubs. First, we took the 4-iron out of the bag, which had a 21-degree high aloft, and put in a 22-degree Tour Edge hybrid. After gathering the data, he gained approximately six to eight degrees in descend angle, which gave us approximately 10 yards more carry with less roll for more stopping power. I like to describe that golf club now as a helicopter: he will be able to get the ball up in the air, get it out and let it land softly at the intended number.”

So, I began the day with a 4-iron that was set up with a wrong loft and a challenge to hit consistently. With a simple club change, I gained distance and performance without changing the swing or anything else.

Next, Weaver and I went to work on the next club up following the new hybrid. We landed on a Tour Edge 5-wood, which ended up being more consistent and also with the ‘helicopter’ effect. It replaced a different hybrid masquerading as a 3-iron in the bag.

The exact ailment a golfer may have will obviously vary from my issue. Weaver was quick to point out that today’s tech means there is a club for almost every situation and hybrids can go all the way up to 11 woods.

“The most important result we want is we need that land angle getting higher along with more stopping power,” Weaver said. “They make so many hybrids these days that putting some in play can really help a golfer’s game. They make nine woods, 11 woods, so if a golfer needs those spinny woods in place of irons to get shots stopped, we offer them.”

Weaver also said what a golfer feels doesn’t always add up to reality, but the technology doesn’t lie. That was somewhat the case for me because I walked in not knowing the 4-iron could be a main issue.

“It is super important for a golfer to come in because I know we can save them at least couple shots a round by getting the golf ball to stop and fly where they need it to stop,” Weaver said. “A golfer comes in like yourself and having that one issue of a golf club that they think it goes this distance number, but it is nowhere near the number that they think it is going to be. What I do is conquer the first issue but then I make sure each distance in the bag flows with the next golf club up or down. We try to keep the distance gap to around 13 to 17 yards between each club as a starting point. Each club should flow well together and not overlap.

“Any golfer can set up a hybrid evaluation for $49 or other clubs and come in here and see if they have a gap issue,” Weaver said. “You can bring your longest iron, a hybrid, a fairway wood, whichever three or four longer golf clubs you have, and we will show you if you can actually hit them high enough to get that carry number over the lake or over the canyons with stopping power.”

The PGA TOUR SuperStore also offers full custom fittings for new clubs, putter evaluations and more.

About the STUDIO

The STUDIO features a brand agnostic fitting approach and PGA TOUR SuperStore certified fitters have no incentive to push certain products or brands. They are in the business to grow the game and improve your scores. The PGA TOUR SuperStore STUDIO in Summerlin is equipped with the best technology and fitters and golfers have access to the largest assortment of clubs and shafts that the industry has to offer.

Seen the thread putting CC & GolfTec, thought I’d throw out the other big box stores that are out there. Not been fitted at either(I did the Titleist 30 in 30 fitting at GG). I like the PGA store with its double options (fitting and Tour Van experience), GG has the partnership with GolfWorks & Maltby. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't have a PGA superstore here but I have been in one. Its going to depend on the employee at a big box store honestly. Personally I'd rather fit myself than get fit at GG

My experience in anything is better than GG. That will vary by location I’m sure.

I’ve had multiple ‘fittings’ at GG and PGASS, I’ve also had one at Club Champion. This is not a dig at GG/PGASS but I’ve never had a decent fitting at either. The most they ever did was analyze lie with a lie-board and help me look at a few shots with different clubs. No real shot analysis and comparison with actual shot data. Typical analysis might be “how’d that one feel?” But I get it, that’s kinda what they do and isn’t necessarily ‘bad.’ Just a light fitting. If you really want to be honestly fit... go to Club Champion. You will pay heavily for it in club pricing, but the fitting part is affordable and totally worth it. Expect one-on-one dedicated assistance, for over an hour, on a trackman, with heavy ball flight and strike analysis. It’s awesome if you can swing it (get it?, bad pun I know). Again, nothing against GG/PGASS, they have their place too, and sometimes you just gotta go with them. They’re the fast food of fittings (which is okay at times). But when you want Filet Mignon, go to CC.

Agree with Buster but it also comes down to the employee fitting you. GG and PGASS is limited by what the OEM sends them for the demo cart. Club Champion have everything that can be tried with everything.

Wonder if it's worth asking each store who their best fitter is or who is used the most?

-CRW-

Golf Galaxy should not be included in any legitimate fitting conversation. PGA Tour SS could be, but only the Tour Van fitting, and I’m sure that depends on the location. I know the fitter at ours. He’s very knowledgeable and has GCQuad which is critical because you need ball flight and club data in a proper fitting.

Pretty sure GG is the same as parent company for launch monitors (GC2 if memory serves). You raise a good point on PGA, I’ll call their fitting team & check what monitor is in the Tour Van bay Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I should probably post this in the hot take thread, but after doing a large number of fittings. I would say for many, a light fitting with standard no up charge options is more than enough for 80-90% of golfers. it is the 10% that a club champion type deep dive is really beneficial. just my two cents..But yes, if you want that full deep dive fitting, do not go to a box store unless you know someone, and trust them. I fully understand that many will disagree. You are more than welcome to spend you money in whichever way you choose.

jlew

My experience at GG was poor, extremely poor. The PGA SS I did a driver fitting at was also poor, but I’m not certain either of them would really be considered top notch fitting locations. I’d rather spend the extra cheese and go to CC/ Cool Clubs etc

Between the two, PGA SS has the better set up and conversations I’ve had, they have more knowledgeable people running those fittings. It’s a substitute for a Club Champion or a more in depth fitting, but can fit 80-90% of golfers just fine. It’s the hard core golfers who are most likely more knowledgeable than the big box stores who need the deeper analysis imo.

I thought I had an interesting story, and it goes to show that it's about the fitter and not the place.

I recently had a fitting at PGATSS for my driver. Before that, I had a Club Champion fitting for my irons.

Why did I go to PGATSS this time? Because I knew a guy. Not for favors, but because of his experience. My fitter was a man who was formerly part of another golf store brand, and two fitting organizations including Club Champion. PGATSS has a version of fitting call The Fitting Van. They use GC Quad vs Trackman (at CC). They have just as many shafts as CC, but are automatically open of more budget minded consumers. That's what I got out of it, and what my fitter confirmed.

Cost of a driver fitting: 1/3 that of CC ($50 vs $150) for the same amount of time (90 mins)and the guarantee that every other part of my bag is automatically half off (fwy/hybrid, wedges, and putters are then $20 ea. at 60 mins, irons and gapping $25 ea. at 90 mins). Quick change wasn't as prevalent but I didn't have any probs waiting a bit more. Looked for fixing dispersion, and adding a bit of length whille checking my efficiency, launch, spin, and descent. And he took a lot of time to explain things to me. Just like at CC. All accomplished.

Unlike at CC, I wasn't tested to the most expensive possible combination out there. Stock and custom combo options. Tried Epic Flash, M5, M6, and PING 410s with Tensei, Oban, Isawa, and one other.

Ended with a PING 410 Plus with Tensei Orange 60g. Very happy (I'm not usually a PING wood fan).

Gave me advice about and let me test shafts for fwys. Walked out buying the 410 fwy with the Tensei Orange 70g. Very, very happy!

To get driver, I have to custom order it. But because they go thru the manufacturer, there is no upcharge provided there is none with the brand. And he put all the info into my account so I don't have to remember or recite anything when I'm ready to order. Oh, and I can trade older clubs to contribute to the purchase.

No guarantee swingweight, spining, puring...but I definitely got my money's worth. Did I trust him...absolutely. Stand-up guy I've "worked" with for quite a few years. It was a chance meeting and I know not every fitter has his level of experience, I just wanted to point out that I had a great and informative time. Not knocking CC, just glad I tried PGATSS.

Good post, and important for people who might not understand the interaction between club fitting and retail stores. Absolutely, 100%, a good fitting is about the guy doing the fitting.

I've got a similar situation with a guy at the Golf Galaxy store near me. He played college golf while in a PGA management program at Campbell University, and then was a teaching pro for several years before going with GG. He is talented and passionate about club fitting, and in the two sessions I've done with him, one for a driver and one for a hybrid and FW setup, we've spent 90 minutes each time getting it right. On top of that, there was NO charge since I then bought the clubs from him, and the on-course results have exceeded my expectations based on the monitor numbers at the fitting.

But it is critical to note that I did NOT go to him blind; he came highly recommended from friend who can really play and who takes his equipment very seriously. I absolutely wouldn't have taken potluck on that; I've talked to guys in both PGA Superstores and Golf Galaxy stores who clearly knew less than I did about heads and shafts, and getting "fitted" by one of them is a recipe for being dissatisfied.

Fwiw, the guy I referring to is Jared Morrow; he's at the Golf Galaxy in Cary, NC if anyone reading this lives in the RDU area and is looking for a good club fitter. Great guy; can't recommend him highly enough.

The two posts above have the right formula, its all about WHO is fitting you versus WHERE you get fit. It doesn't matter if you pay $500 dollars at CC or 25$ at GG, the fitting will only be as good as the individual who fits you. It's best to do you homework on these types of things less you throw good money after bad trying to cover up a bad fit one after another.

I totally agree. With that said, there are few good fitters working retail stores for $12-$15 per hour. As most are open 70 or more hours per week they have several on staff so chances are even higher of getting a fool.

EQUIPMENT: Ball Fitting With The PGA TOUR Superstore

mm

What golf ball do you play? Are you a ProV guy because that’s what most pros use? Maybe you prefer a budget ball from one of those direct to consumer brands. Maybe you just use whatever you find in the woods or what’s on sale. Whatever ball you use for your round it can impact your score positively or negatively.

Playing the right ball for you is as simple as holding a green in regulation or bouncing off the back into a bunker. I had “fit” myself to the Chromesoft Truvis ball because I had the most success with that ball, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t leaving something on the table. That’s why I reached out to my local PGA TOUR Superstore and setup a ball fitting.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Ed DiTusa (@ed_ditusa)

What To Expect

Just like getting fit for Drivers, irons, wedges or putters, the technology exists now to fit each golfer to the best ball for them. What works best for Dustin Johnson may not work best for you.  When you do a ball fitting with the PGA TOUR Superstore you aren’t just piping a few drivers into the screen and going with the longest off the tee. It’s a process that works backwards from the green to the tee.

You will focus on feel off the putter face and end with distance/accuracy off the tee with your driver. Before you begin your ball test, the fitter will ask you a series of questions so they can get an idea of what you like and what you’re looking to accomplish.

These questions include what ball you use, why you use it, what you want to achieve in your fitting and price range you want to stay in. Your answers will guide the fitter into what options to show you. If you don’t care about the price, the fitter will move right into the premium balls because like anything, the more it costs the better it is (usually).

Complete Ball Fitting At The PGA Tour Superstore This is the best ball fitting video you can find! I went to the PGA Superstore and found out what goes into a ball fitting. I will get answers to common questions and show you all 4 phases of an indoor ball fitting.

Putter Test

The putter test kicks off your personal ball fitting journey. Why? Because the green is where you will hit 1/3 of your shots. The fitter will set you up about 10 feet away from the hole. Your job is to focus on the feel of the ball while you putt. It doesn’t matter if you make the putt or not. It’s all about feel.

They will set each ball down in front of you with the label down. You won’t know what brand you’re hitting. This way there are no brand bias expectations and you end up selecting what you prefer based on feel. Whatever ball you currently play with will be added into this part of the test but that doesn’t mean it will stay in the competition.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by karin (car-in) hart (@karinhart)

Wedge Test (50-Yard Pitch Shot)

At this point you have eliminated a decent amount of balls and you’re ready to take your test into the simulator. The idea behind this part of the ball fitting test is that you missed your approach into the green. You’re hitting a 50-yard pitch shot at the flag. You want that ball to stop where it lands. That way you can start firing at pins and leave yourself with shorter putts.

The more spin you generate, the less roll out you will get. The data will be captured by the simulators software so the fitter will know exactly what each ball is doing for you and the clubs you are using. Just like the putter test, the fitter will set the balls down in front of you with the label down. You won’t know what ball you’re hitting; you will only see the results.

Approach Shot (7 iron or 150-160 Yards)

Moving forward into the ball test we move further away from the green. Now you will hit a 7 iron into the green. The fitter will ask you how far you hit your 7 iron and adjust the distance from there. The idea behind this part of the test is to see if you can hold a green from further out. If one ball doesn’t generate enough spin to stay on the green and another does then you would want to go with that option.

It’s important to keep in mind that you are not club testing here. It’s not about speed or distances it’s about hitting greens so you can start finding more birdies. Don’t worry if you hit a bad shot or two. The fitter will remove those from the equation. Trust me, I hit plenty of bad ones during my test. If you haven’t guessed it by now, you still won’t know what ball you’re hitting but the fitter will. Just enjoy the process and let the data speak for itself.

By this point you are nice and loose so it’s time to take this test to the tee and start pounding driver. If the balls you’re left with preform on the green, spin great with pitch shots and hold greens with your 7 iron it’s now time to see if they preform off the tee. Try your best to make solid contact here. As tempting as it may be to go full send, you want to get good data so you can make an informed decision at the end of the test.

To be honest I did try to crush a few at the end just to see how far I could hit it. The fitter is going to look at the spin rates off the tee when you’re done. This is not where we want the most spin generated. Too much spin with the driver will reduce distance and roll out. The goal is to find a ball that checks all the boxes, not just a few.

On-Course Testing

Now that you have completed your indoor, data driven test you should be left with two or three options that fit your game the best. If the ball you came in the door with is still in the running, you already know how it performs on the course. If you’re left with a few new options, it’s time to buy a dozen of each and take them to the course.

The fitter will provide you with a comment card to guide you through the on the course testing. When you play your ball testing round of golf, it won’t be just based on score. You will want to try a variety of shots with each ball you’re testing.

The comment card will guide you on what shots to try and what to focus on.

Based on your results you should know what ball is best for you. If you’re still unsure, you can take that comment card back to the store with the remaining golf balls you purchased and head back into the simulator. The great thing about the PGA Superstore is that they have a 90-day playability guarantee. Let’s say one ball way outperformed the other. Just bring those balls back and exchange them for the brand that worked best for you.

Summary

If you would like to try a ball fitting with the PGA Superstore head over to their website and navigate to the ball fitting tab . You will be able to find your nearest store. A ball fitting isn’t just for elite players. Anyone looking to improve their game will benefit from this experience.

Plus, doing a fitting is a ton of fun. I really enjoyed my ball fitting experience and I know you will too. I ended up with two options to try on the course. The Srixon Z Star and the TaylorMade TP5.

I can’t wait to see how these preform in real world conditions and find out what is the absolute best ball for me.

The only drawback could be the cost. Individual club fittings start at $40 to $50, while a full bag fitting at PGA Tour Superstore costs $99 to $300 ( check your local PGATSS stores pricing ). The more expensive fittings use more premium technology to analyze your swing.
