Stepping into Savannah is like walking through the pages of history. It is touted as America’s first planned city, masterminded by General James Oglethorpe in 1733. It sets the stage for an enchanting vacation filled with public squares, a mix of historic buildings of different bygone eras, manicured parks, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s where every cobblestone whispers stories of the past, making it not just Georgia’s oldest city but also one of the most alluring destinations in the South. If you’re looking for things to do in Savannah, you have plenty of options.

Take a Historic District Tour

The best way to get a feel for the city is to book a walking tour of the Historic District. This area is known for its beautiful 18th and 19th-century architecture, cobblestone streets, and lush squares. Savannah holds one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the US. Most often, your guide will be a resident and knowledgeable about the area, being able to share stories about past residents and historical events. Guides can also recommend places to eat and what to see next.

If you’d rather have a more leisurely pace, try one of the trolley tours, which offer hop-on and hop-off service, and the driver acts as your tour guide.  Expect to pay around $30 per person for each of these tours.

Try Some Southern Cooking

Savannah is home to plenty of international cuisines and local favorites. However, if you are here for the Southern cooking, you’re in for a treat. Must-tries are local shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and waffles, and Savannah Red Rice. If you want to combine history, beer, and food in one location, check out The Crystal Beer Parlour. It has locally brewed beer, tasty Southern and American treats, and a restaurant operating since the early 1930s. 

For homestyle Southern cooking and hospitality, try Mrs Wilkes Dining Room . This eatery features large tables where guests can make new friends while dining with strangers. This is great for solo travelers who may feel awkward dining alone. The menu changes daily, but you can expect staples like fried chicken, okra and tomatoes, butter beans, and collard greens. 

Visit Mercer Williams House Museum and Monterey Square

Savannah has numerous beautiful squares, but this one stands out for a few unique reasons. Notably, it served as a backdrop in the 1997 film  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack, an adaptation of John Berendt’s novel. Encircling the monument dedicated to Casimir Pulaski, the square features meticulously maintained gardens and serene oak trees adorned with Spanish moss. Additionally, the surrounding structures are among Savannah’s oldest, dating back to the 1800s, adding a historical charm to the area.

Mercer House, built in 1868, is now heavily associated with Berendt’s work. However, the strange stories surrounding the historic home are not fictional. This location has witnessed at least three premature deaths. These include the tragic incident in 1969 when 11-year-old Tommy Downs fell from the roof, the 1981 incident where Jim Williams—the current owner at the time—allegedly shot Danny Hansford, his employee, and the death of Williams himself of pneumonia and heart failure, a year after he was acquitted of the crime. Visitors can tour the house, and it’s the subject of many ghost tours in the area.

Walk Through Bonaventure Cemetery

When it comes to Gothic Southern beauty and charm, the Bonaventure Cemetery is the epitome of the aesthetic. Its captivating beauty and elaborate tombstones provide a glimpse into the historical heart of Savannah. Located three miles from the Savannah, it’s well worth the trip. Admission is free. 

The  Bonaventure Historical Society  offers free tours on the second Saturday of the month. You can also use the mobile app to tour by yourself. There is also a daily paid guided  tour  by an experienced guide where you can learn about the history of the 170-year-old cemetery and listen to associated haunted tales. It runs at 10 am and 2 pm daily and costs $30.

See Forsyth Park

For nature lovers, Forsyth Park is one of the top things to do in Savannah. This large city park covers 30 acres. It is famous for its winding walking paths, shady spots perfect for picnics beneath the majestic oaks, and the iconic fountain built in 1858. The fountain is meant to imitate the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. You’ll also find two children’s playgrounds and a fragrant garden created for blind people.

Summer in the south can be swelteringly hot, so one of the best ways to do things in Savannah is via the water. You have several choices. Walk Down River Street

Over a century ago, you would have seen cotton warehouses forming the vista of River Street. Today, these buildings have been converted into a fun mix of boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, breweries, and restaurants, creating a vibrant hub for locals and visitors.

You’ll find ghost tours in just about every city and town the world over, but in places steeped in history like Savannah, you can expect a lot of options. Therefore, it depends on what sort of tour you prefer.

Walking tours offer a more personal approach, but if you’re not a fan of walking or are limited on time, there’s the Haunted Hearse Tour and Haunted Trolley tours. The pros of the latter are that your group size is limited and you don’t have to crowd on pavements to hear someone speak. Check Out Savannah Theatre and Lucas Theatre

The Savannah Theatre dates to 1818 and lays claim to some famous performers, including Oscar Wilde and W. C. Fields.  In the ’50s, it was turned into a movie theater. Today, it still operates as a working theatre with stage productions such as Jersey Boys and Fiddler on the Roof.  Recently, it was featured on The Travel Channel’s paranormal show compliments of the ghostly activity in the building.  

The Lucas Theatre was built as a movie house in the 1920s. The exterior of the building is Spanish Baroque Revival, while the interior is a combination of Art Deco and Greek Revival. It was one of the first public buildings in the US to have air conditioning in 1926 — something that is very welcome in Savannah summers. In the ’70s, it was set to be demolished, but it was finally saved and restored in the ’80s by the newly formed Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Today, it is home to movies and many live performances.

Moscow River

The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south. 

Bridges in Moscow

• Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
• Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
• Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
• Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
• Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

• Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
• Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
• Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
• Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
• Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
• The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
• Novodevichy Convent
• The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
• St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
• St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Amazing Moscow river cruise

Radisson is the most luxurious and amazing boat cruise in Moscow. We did the 2.5 hr boat cruise today at 7 PM. Being sunset and dinner time, the tour was sold out. But given my advance reservation, I got entry. I had the PDF print of the page I got when booking on Radisson cruise website but was initially rejected entry on the boat. Given the company's security guy checking tickets didn't speak much English, we got a bit disappointed that we will not be able to get in. But then we went to the ticket counter and got the real ticket with the bar code. Even the ticket counter guys were a bit clueless as if they had never seen an online ticket before. Very strange for a company of their repute. Nonetheless we had an amazing time later on the cruise. Great sunset views of the city. The upper deck is amazing and we got a nice windy seat by the end granting us unparalleled views. The food and drinks menu is also amazing and not extremely costly. Service was good too. Plus Radisson guys don't allow a lot of people on the boat, so it didn't feel crowded at any time. Must do cruise especially the 7 PM one. Do book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

We took the "Mercedes Benz" branded cruise with the Radisson Moscow river dinner cruises. (Big boats, not the little boats). We were not quite sure in terms of what to expect, but the trip was wonderful and we are very very glad we went. The boat itself was very clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. One minor quibble is that they should be more fastidious with cleaning the glass on the ship's "greenhouse" prior to starting the cruises. This would help make the views even better. The food was quite good (the German food dishes, some of which were not available even though they were on the menu, were ok, the Russian ones not surprisingly seemed a little better done) The service was good as well. Our server on the boat was a delightful young woman who did speak a little bit of English, but this cruise appears to be very much what the locals do for a good time. A few anniversaries and third dates were in progress all around us, by all appearances. We had a little bit of trouble identifying the right boat on the docks as they are tied up in parallel and in series, and since we speak very little Russian, and on the docks the dock staff didn't appear to speak any English, we had to make our best guesses. We did ok showing our tickets to the employees, pointing, and proceeding. Give yourself plenty of time to figure this out. Also, the best tables seem to be taken by order of who shows up first, though I could be wrong. We went during the May Day/Victory day week, so the city was very festive and dressed up. The views were simply amazing. One very memorable and unexpected treat was that Gorky Park lit up the park's trees with brilliant, multi-colored lights that shifted colors over time. What a beautiful sight! We absolutely loved this 2.5 hour luncheon cruise. Very clean and modern craft. The staff and crew were all genuinely friendly and attentive. We were dressed in typical cold weather tourist attire, but many of the others were dressed quite well. The meal was equally delicious. The views as you cruise down the Moscow river were amazing. Certainly worthwhile adding this to your itinerary while visiting Moscow as you get to see a different view of the sites of Moscow in comfort.

Definitely recommended! The route that the boat follows is very picturesque. You get to see the all major attrations of the city just from the window while enjoying delicious meal. The atmosphere onboard is very romantic, nothing distracts you, you can just sit and relax contemplating the view of this great ancient city. Great for couple, families and just friends coming together, both for celebration and romatic dinner. The service is great, the food is delicious, the menu offers great choice of meals and drinks. The trip takes 2 hours which is enough to order your meal and fully enjoy it without being rushed. Absolutely recommended!

Came here for a romantic evening with my wife. The booking was smooth as was the ride; but everything else is, well, brusque. It appears that the entire service team needs express training on “customer service”. Are they bouncers brought in as waiters? Am typing this review even as I am in the boat! I hope somebody at Flotilla Radisson takes note. On the positive front: the food was good.
